Welcome to /vst/ - Vidya/Strategy: /vst/ is a place to discuss all types of strategy video games, including both turn-based and real-time strategy, turn-based and real-time tactics, single-player and multi-player (including MOBAs). All platforms are welcome.
Does this mean discussion of strategy games is banned on other video game boards? No! /vst/ is just a separate board specifically focused on strategy games where discussions about your favorite games can thrive.
Please familiarize yourself with the rules and remember to use the spoiler function where appropriate!
Please note that, like /v/, "Generals"—long-term, one-after-the-other, recurring threads about a specific game are not permitted on /vst/. Such threads belong on >>>/vg/

Age of Empires 1 Return of Rome: I enjoyed playing as Egypt in this DLC, much much better than AOE1: Definitive Edition

What, no Mechabellum thread?: What does /vst have against auto-battlers, you fuck? It's a badass game - the chess aspect of starcraft without the APM faggotry

This game legit?: Seen people compare it to Alpha Centauri, which is a pretty lofty claim to say the least. Anyone know if this isn't just overhyped garbage?

What is your favorite squad/army/faction of all time, of whatever strategy game you like? ES2's Cravers are my favorite, the game does a great job of making you feel like a killing machine that everyone is scared of.

R: 29 / I: 2
why i can't understand this game, i can't win in normal diff, it reachs a point where every single faction declares war on you and you spend the rest of the game defending the territories that you still has i never had this problem in twRome neither in TWWarhammer 1, where i play in hard easily, but shogun just stomps me? there is a guide or something to understand this game? or i'm being just retarded

R: 42 / I: 3
King of Dragon Pass: To this day I still don't really understand the effect of leader stats. All information I can find on it is incredibly vague. Even in hero quests success seems to be a complete crapshoot regardless of the quester's stats.

Why can't Japs (and Asians in general) make good RTS's? Besides some Koei titles, the only decent Japanese RTS's I can name are indie games you got you dig deep on Steam or know Japanese to find like Lost Technology.

R: 3
Power and Revolution: Been looking at this game but don't really understand what it is? Is it like EU4 but more in-depth is it a complete sandbox where I can take over other countries? What are the "editions" exactly and for example in the newest version could you play as Iraq and enter the Ukraine war? Also if the game is shit any recommendations for something similar (not Vicky 2)

R: 6
Distant Worlds 2: Is this game comfy if I want more to manage the social / economic side of things? I am terrible at warfare. In the first game it was too easy to make money but it was fun for a while seeing the ships carrying stuff around and building.

Hello /vst/ I'm an indie developer making a strategy game which you might call /vst/core (genocide included) I just put an alpha on itch for free https://nikousstudio.itch.io/ascendant-dawn here. It's grand strategy but instead of being stuck in one place you're a nomadic tribe that does stuff like raid cities. Altogether it's sort of a cross between mount and blade and europa universalis The alpha is pretty basic and more of a vertical demo with lots of stuff cut out.

civ simulator with real world consequences: civ iv itself is pretty basic and completely fictional in terms of options besides a mad scenario. a mod for civ iv bts called rise of mankind a new dawn has had features added to make it historically balanced in every aspect besides a proper design of the foreign ai matching the behaviors one could expect from each irl ethnicity. You actually need to develop technologies and cities and take over the culture to keep your cities from revolting and raising armies effectively equal in strength to your governments forces for historically accurate causes. Besides some details about the earlier eras I wanted to talk about the options for the future era. One is not really sci fi as much as just undeveloped technology and that's the sort of continual population bloom with dissent suppressed by forcing the population to take implants etc that make them like borg drones from star trek. Another option is the sort of UN route where everyone agrees to implement leftist policies everywhere and a really rather boring and uninventive global government arises and 1984s everyone probably. A third option though exists for the astute to discover. Basically have a caste segregated society controlled by a green religious cult and a government like that from the warhammer 40k lore where one emperor controls the entire very populate military who only take over large cities after they've become developed enough that they start to have what you'd call a "middle class" and potentially dystopian technologies like cloning, mind control and thought scanning and androids. The reason this option is there and not just status quo capitalism and meritocracy is because it doesn't solve the demographic flailing of cosmopolitan societies, energy waste of capitalist economies, or weaponize the human mind and body to a point of competitiveness with machines and clone dystopias. None of those systems would ever really be global or stable over time.

RTS Faction archetype analysis thread: Looking past the exteriors and technical details of factions in games, you have the core concept a faction is meant to embody—certain reoccurring traits that define their playstyle and relationship with other factions. >The "Quantity-over-quality" faction >The "Timing is everything" faction >The "The anti-meta" faction etc. The only place I've seen attempt to extensively cover them is TvTropes (A Commander Is You), so I'm making this. Talk about faction designs you like, playstyles (in the context of PvP), and the ways games should differentiate or connect factions.

Ostranauts: What do we think of this game? I haven't bought it yet but it seems ambitious as hell and I'm closely monitoring development. Tried pirating it and got the basics down, but it seems like there's a lot of bugs and the reviews aren't great. >dock to a derelict and start stripping out all the air pumps because they're the only hardware of value left >takes a long time because I can't into character creation >as I'm dragging a pump back to the cargo bay all the electronics turn off and oxygen levels start to drop >put my pressure suit helmet on to buy a little time >notice the battery on my ship went dead, apparently I forgot to charge it before this salvage mission >search the derelict and manage to find an old rusty battery with a trickle of charge left >hook it up to my network in the ship and burn as fast as possible back to the corporate station >I'm burning 1 km/s trying to make this port before the battery runs out and my navigation console shuts off, my guy has hypercapnia because the CO2 is building up in his cheap pressure suit suddenly my thrusters cut off as I'm decelerating to dock with the port >apparently I forgot to fill up my RCS tanks before the mission as well >shuttle collides with the station at 700m/s, game freezes for 5 seconds before a 10 page log appears telling me how each of my individual body parts got destroyed due to extreme blunt trauma I had fun but I'm also kind of frustrated that the tutorial and UI suck and didn't explain how to do anything.

I play Starcraft 1 with a friend. He's inexperienced with video games in general, but he likes Starcraft 1 because it's chill and casual (at least the way we play it). However, he's not so good at it because he likes to turtle and build up his base. This often results in him losing unfortunately, and as much as one enjoys them game, it sucks when you lose all the time. I recently got to thinking, what if Starcraft 1 isn't the right game for him? And so I'm curious, are there any co-op, multiplayer RTS that focus on collective base defense? Preferably a bit casual? I would like to continue enjoying sharing the joys of gaming with him.

The need for Grey Eminence: >Development is still paused >Likely to be at least a year before it resumes I'll be waiting eagerly. A reminder as to why this is necessary: >EU4's economic model is nonsense (paid to import from abroad as though you were a trade company stockholder) >The game comes down to stacking flat tag bonuses and changing country names for permanent advantages >Techs are unimportant >Internal politics don't exist >Buildings produce constantly without need for inputs >Markets are meaningless >Loans are meaningless >Navy is (mostly) pointless >The gold/silver inflation that defined the era and created the impetus for global expansion doesn't exist >Mana is all that matters Grey Eminance promises to change this.

Magic in warhammer is boring: >game says there are over 100 spells in the game >more like 10 and hundreds of reskins every single school of magic feels the same. Most spells aren't even useful or get overshadowed by the stronger ones. Also they mostly take form of trash killer while single entities are mostly safe from magic. They should add more fun and diverse spells. Why there's no spell that makes your unit invisible? teleportation? making units enraged? mind control? In tabletop Curse of Years has a chance to wipe out any enemy unit. In video game it's just a debuff.

I began working on a Victoria 3 mod to try and fix the retarded legislation system of the base game. Anything you'd like to add? So far I made 2 separate law groups for private and state education, same goes for healthcare, and made it so that only the state institutions cost any bureaucratic capacity. I also replaced the arbitrary "distribution of power" and "governance principles" laws with head of state and vote frenchise (I also removed anarchy, and other self contradictory laws in the process). I'm trying to figure out how to replace the monkey brain "economic system" law group. As you can see on pic related, it is just removed as of now. I'm thinking of adding some form of private property ownership legal framework but not sure how. I might need to add technologies as well. Help me anons.

Rimworld /vst/ succession game interest check thread: So recently I've been thinking that maybe it could be interesting to start a succession game of Rimworld hosted on this site, and see how it turns out. >what's a succession game It's the term for games hosted on forums where one save game is passed between multiple people to see what could be made with the collaboration of multiple players working on one colony- or to see how long the save game can last before it inevitably collapses in a hilarious downward spiral because someone screwed up and made a mistake that would become someone else's problem. I think it could be fun to see such a thing on 4chan. >what mods will be used I think for this proof of concept, the modpack should be limited to the bare essentials - just some basic QoL mods, and then the rest will be limited to whatever preferred mods the other players want that can be added and removed to existing savegames without problems. If this actually takes off I might consider asking for mods for the second succession game and later, that add more content. >what DLC will be used For the sake of simplicity (and to open this up to more users while this concept is still young on /vst/), this will stick to just the base game - no need to buy/pirate any DLCs. >when will it start As soon as I get a few interested lurkers. >what will the succession rules be (play time, who gets to play, etc) I'll snip this out (as well as the rules I expect for 2000 post length limit reasons; just check the thread's first post for the full OP I'll also be fine with lurkers using this as a Rimworld discussion thread when there's no active talk about the succession game(s), for those who want something slower than /vg/'s gacha hell catalog With all that said, I'll start the first savefile as soon as there's enough interest in this thread for it to not fall to page 10.

Fundamental problem of tiling: There only two main types of tiling for tbs - squares and hexes, and both have problems. hexes dont have all 4 straight moves, its look so painful to watch how units move left/right in civ5, they really describe half arc. squares have all 4 straight lines and 4 diagonal, but they dont geometrically correct, like in civ3 if you explore diagonally then you open twice as much tiles. so, how we can have both properties, all movement and geometric correctness? there are bunch of solutions that i come up with. 1) change cost of diagonal movement on square grid, possible solutions are: 2; 1,5; 17 if straight cost 12. maybe it good enough for tactics, but for strategy not so much. if unit have one movement than it has to move regardless of direction, unused ap is bad. 2) allow in hexes grid movement also to vertices, thereby doubles directions. +all 4 straight moves, +diagonals, -movements are not geometrically correct, some cost 2 some root(3), -not true diagonal, - 6 way to move from hex to vertex, but only 3 to come out. also how to draw map? 3)tessellation with gaps. you can use concentric rings to construct tessellation with any regular polygon, idea from hyperbolic geometry. + as many direction of movements as you like, -0 correctness. so, any more ideas?

You will never have a game that simulates in autistic detail the political, economic and cultural factors that move the wheels of history. You will never play a game that simulates why some nations succeed where others fail. You will never play a game that doesn’t have focus trees or decisions to fool you into thinking it has actual depth. “A thousand years is not enough” you sigh as you look out over your shitty map game where number go up and map color equal mine is le good. It’s over.

How good is it compared to the first game? I finished playing the first one with its expansions recently and it was amazing

Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga: What does /vst/ think of this game? I just beat it and thought it kicked ass. I loved Ogre Battle, and I loved this game too. The dialogue could be a bit cringe-inducing at times, but I actually came to enjoy some aspects of the story. Most importantly, the mechanics and squad customization were great. Had a lot of fun with this one.

It's bare-bones, and lacks any AI function, but has the basic structure for Vicky 2. Thoughts? Dominions: I really liked what i experienced when i pirated Dominions 5, but 20 bucks even on discount for a game from six years ago? I dunno. I assume the pricing is that way because its very much a genre enthusiast's game so you get the most you can out of very few purchases Also, Dominions thread

Making an RTS: >already 100% playable with 40 different units -> free <- go to https://filmstars.itch.io/hypercoven Hello, after dropping the link a couple times in other threads I figured I’d make my own to maybe get some more feedback. Shoutout to the other devs posting here. >Features >Mix and match armies Different unit 'factories' are strewn across the map, to be conquered. Every type of factory is like a mini race of its own, two different units and a set of upgrades. >Relaxed singleplayer experience >Conquer randomized planet Beating this is just a question of using the right strategy. But after figuring that out, you can challenge yourself by trying to win as fast as possible; which then makes the gamemode very demanding in terms of execution - multitasking, micro, and so on. >Multiplayer >Focus is on playing the map Unit production in captured factories is automatic and free. Meaning you get the usual "more bases = more units" dynamics, but without an APM check. You can spend the time controlling your armies instead. Obviously the idea is that, in turn, all units in the game should be interesting and fun to play with. >Build your own game/balance Since there are no fixed races, concrete strategies will always result from the map layout. You can build maps with only the dumbest units, or the most complex ones, or fast ones, or slow ones, or very asymmetric maps; or actually draft the layout fresh every match. >Modern art visuals Cannot into drawing myself so I just use whatever sprites I find on the internet. If it looks like a mess to you you don’t understand art, sorry. Will have AI redraw the whole game very nicely 2-3 years down the line Any comments appreciated, how cool or stupid does it sound

NEW COMMAND & CONQUER GAME IS COMING: I would like to personally thank each and every member of the C&C community who purchased microtransactions in C&C Rivals and bought copies (some even more than one) of Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, especially the Special and 25th Anniversary Editions. Our monetary sacrifices were not in vain. A new C&C game is currently in the making. Yes, this is official. Command & Conquer: Legions, previously known as Project C&C, has initiated a closed beta test for Android devices only (at least for now) in selected regions (Canada, Germany, France, Thailand, the Philippines, and Mexico). Command & Conquer: Legions is being developed by Level Infinite and published by Electronic Arts, who have recently had an unexpected redemption arc, i am shocked not gonna lie. The game will have a total of SIX playable factions (Global Defense Initiative, Brotherhood of Nod, Forgotten Mutants, C.A.B.A.L., Scrin, and Seraphim). That's all the information i was able to dig up, folks. So, stay tuned for new updates. As for now, take a look at this cool Brotherhood of Nod VS C.A.B.A.L. trailer! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlOOP4yVd28&ab_channel=GamesNier

Star Wars: Empire at War: Has any game ever gotten such a renaissance without getting a direct remake, as Empire at War did? >15 years after release devs update the game >multiplayer is accessible again and is revived >more players than release day >motherfucking steam workshop support >mods bigger than the base game >Thrawn's Revenge >complete overhauls >bug fixes even to this day Fuck I love this game so much.

R: 345 / I: 33
AOE3: Why did you give up on kino of empires 3? It has the perfect sweat-to-gameplay ratio. None of the "place a pixel perfect palisade box around your vils in case of harassment or gg out" silliness. Macro is smaller scale and yet still has a big impact. Early, mid and late game are very clear cut and distinct. It's a really well designed RTS that manages to both utilize rock-paper-scissors counters AND make it not shit and have actual depth to it.

Shadow Empire: >be me >finally do the XTREME Tech 3 militia start you always wanted >get challenging start in Rad Hazard 3 and endless raiders streaming over the mountain range your south >get a handle on XTREME AI combat bonus and take control of the mountains >pull off unification with largest neighboring raiders >realize somehow you deselected Air Forces in planet gen alas

YAGT (yet another Graviteam thread): So it's been two weeks since the new DLC dropped. How do you rate it, anons? I found it pretty fun, but I'm feeling the WWII EF fatigue. WF is probably never happening, but they could put some Africa ops in there, or more Cold War scenarios. I understand why Tunisia '43 content can't get ported over, but why they choose not do anything with all the cool campaigns SABOW had puzzles me.

R: 293 / I: 24
>all units have memorable personalities that are not just for show but actually affect gameplay >complex economy >no micro required >voiced by William Wallace >campaign has a good difficulty curve which makes you get better at the game just by playing it, without throwing sudden walls of difficulty at you >there are many strats and the levels are varied in such a way that all units are useful somewhere This is the best RTS ever made

R: 303 / I: 73
WARNO / WARGAME RED DRAGON THREAD: Last thread hit the Bump Limit >What are you playing? >What are you using? >What was fun or worked well for you recently? City Builder Genre Wide Discussion: Is the city builder genre seeing an uptick in developers and titles? Not all are good and many seem to be copy paste titles with apocalyptical quirks or cash grabs in the case of Pharaoh New Era. However, I'm sure we will see some diamonds in the rough coming out of early access games in the future. There are a lot of games in development. How do you feel about the genre going forward? What are some games you are looking forward to? Do you like the direction of these games and where do you want this genre of games to go?

R: 207 / I: 19
Aoeo: Project celeste mod thread: You might be wondering... >Wait didn't this game get canned nearly a decade ago? Yes! >Then why are you making a thread about it fag? Well sinve 2017 there's been a revival for it with new content to for everyone to play. And everything is for free. Since it's a non-commertial product.
