Fighting Fate

Episode 1: Sensei

Guided by fate, the winds of change push those destined on the paths to greatness.

Setting: modern-day Japanese setting; however, feudal areas and traditional buildings still stand.

Shokei wandered the halls of the palace, searching for his friend, Tsuya. At the age of 11, Shokei could be described as a pretty boy, with medium length, wavy black hair, a slightly built figure due to his kendo training, and a regal smile. All the maids in the palace adored him and his friendly, respectable attitude.
His friend, Tsuya, was his attendant, being 13, tall and built, with short spiky hair. He would be considered handsome to the maids, some of which mistake him to be 16.

"Tsuya! Where are you?" Shokei yelled outside in the garden. "your father is supposed to teach us the advanced set today!"

Tsuya's father, Jiro, was both Tsuya and Shokei's kendo instructor, as well as Shokei's father's attendant. However, they are treated with some sort of dignity as nobles are.

"Tsuuuuyaaaaa-mmpphh!!" Shokei's yell was cut short as Tsuya appeared behind the wooden support beam and covered his friends mouth.

"shh!! Sho, you're too loud," he said, holding his mouth with one hand and wrapping his arm around Shokei's lanky body. Sho tried to struggle, but Tsuya was too strong.

After Tsuya let go, Sho hit him in the gut, quite weakly. "No fair! You know i can't beat you in wrestling."

"Well, you have Kendo, soccer, swimming, and speed sports. Something like pure strength is my only asset."

"where's Jiro-Sensei? We're learning new Kendo moved today, right?"

"nope. Dad said he had something brand new to teach us. Something he said we could practice with just me and you."

"Huh? He won't watch us?"

"let's just go, ok? It sounds interesting."

Sho and Tsuya headed towards the dojo that the palace built back web sho's father was still a child. The mats on the floor were sturdy and hard but the walls opened up to the garden if they wanted fresh air.

Sho and Tsuya changed into their baggy kendo shirts and hakama. They both wore black hakama and tabi socks, as well as white kendo shirts. They sat on their knees as they waited for their Sensei to arrive.

"Good morning, Sho!" bellowed Jiro-Sensei. "I see you're excited about today's lesson."

"of course, Sensei! All your lessons are always unique and fun."

Tsuya leaned close to Sho, "kiss-up."

"it's true!"

"now, Tsuya," said Jiro, don't be so stingy. After all, you and he are going to be spending plenty of time training together. Now come here Tsuya."

Tsuya stood up and went over to his father.

"today's lesson deals with a different sort of art," Jiro said as he produced a long coil of blue cotton rope. "Shokei, are you familiar with the term 'hojojutsu'?"

"No Sensei... What is it?"

"back in the late 1800's, in feudal Japan, just like our province, the police force had developed a special way to restrain villains and criminals. They would use intricate knots to prevent their movement. The more intricate the knots, the more socially prestigious."

"It sounds interesting, father," Tsuya said. "Is that what these ropes are for?"

"yes son," Jiro said, "exactly. However, me and Lord Tano have adapted this feudal art into a sort of game."

Shokei loved games more than he loved sports. "so we get to learn how to play a game?" he said with eyes beaming.

Jiro smiled and laughed at his student's enthusiasm. Tsuya was laughing too, and before he knew it, his father had him face down on the floor.

"Dad! What're you doing??" Tsuya said a bit startled. Jiro then wrapped the blue ropes around his son's wrists behind his back. Once they were tight enough, he sat on his sons back and wrapped up his feet in a similar fashion. Taking his ankles, he lifted them to his wrists and secured Tsuya into tight hogtie.

"are you ok, son?" Jiro said. "It's not intricate roping because this way is more secure."

Tsuya moved about a bit in his situation. "I'm ok, father!"

"Good, then let me just add a few more..." Jiro placed a few more knots away from Tsuya's reach and finished off the tight hogtie.

Shokei went closer to his incapacitated friend with a wide grin. "Tsuya, can you get free??"

"Ugh, err, agh... no..." Tsuya bowed his head down in defeat.

"Well," Jiro said, "I need to head to a meeting with your father, Sho, so this lesson is cut short for today." Jiro stood up and left the room.

Tsuya shook a bit more, until realizing his situation. "Hey Sho, can you let me go now?... Sho...?"

Sho began closing all the wooden doors that opened to the gardens. "I think all the maids are attending the meeting right now..."

"Yeah... and...?"

"I've never been able to have you like this before.... helpless... like when we wrestle."

Tsuya started to move to see his friend. "Sho, you better not!!"

"Better not, what?" Sho said with a devious grin. Little to Tsuya's knowledge, his best friend had a sort of... interest with the tight and thin tabi socks that his friend was wearing, and how the contours of his feet fit them.

"Stop looking at me like that..." Tsuya started blushing. Suddenly, Sho grabbed hold of his ankles. "Young lord, what are you doing??"

"C'mon Tsuya! It's only a game!" Sho started stroking his fingers down Tsuya's socked feet, to which Tsuya bellowed out in laughter.

"S-sto-o-op!!" Sho couldn't hear his servant's pleas; he was too absorbed in his fantasy come true - having his friend in his control.

Suddenly, Sho's maid opened the sliding door. "Young lo-" Sho looked up.

"Asami, shh!!" Sho put his finger to his lips. "We're just playing a game that Jiro-sensei taught us."

Asami giggled and winked at the young lord and Tsuya. "Your father expects you and lord Tsuya in 20 minutes at the conference room." She left the room, at which time Tsuya regained breath control.

"You little brat..." Tsuya put his head down and relaxed on his side.

Sho crouched down and patted his friend's head. "Tsuya?"

"What?"

"You're the greatest friend I could ever ask for." :)

"Wh-what?" Tsuya turned away and blushed. "Shut up..."

"Sho!!" Tsuya was sliding up and down the shiny wooden floors of the mansion; his white socks getting minimaal friction with the glossy halls. "Young lord! Where are you?" Tsuya decided to check one last place, and hoped that he wasn't where he- Tsuya sighed.

"Mpph!"Tsuya had found Sho in the secret apartment of the dojo; in the center of the dojo's mats was a secret trapdoor that could be opened and closed manually from both sides. Sho was tied to a chair, with his legs bound separately to the leg pegs and his hands roped tightly behind him. Sho was also gagged and blindfolded with two pieces of rough cloths.

"Young lord..." Tsuya said half playfully and half annoyed. Sho recognized that someone was in the secret compartmented room. He started squirming until Tsuya removed his blindfold and gag.

"Tsuya!!" Sho was beaming a wide grin at his best friend. "You'll never believe it: robbers came in and tied me up and-"

"Stop making up stories, Sho."

"Haha, you always catch me at the most inconvenient of times."

"Young lord," Tsuya began untying his master from the chair, "you know that my father and I worry when you tie yourself up for fun. What if it really WAS kidnappers, and you were taken hostage?"

"But I wasn't. It's just fun to pretend!"

"Well, what if you actually trapped yourself for real?"

"I'm not THAT stupid; the scissors are... oops."

"What?"

"I left them in my room..."

"Sho! You're lucky I found you then!"

"I know, thanks Tsuya!" Sho was free, and he gave his tall best friend a kid-like hug. Like a little brother hugging a big brother around the knees (well, more around his chest, but you get the point).

"Sho, if you want to play games, I'll play with you, ok?"

"Ok... but where were you? I was going to ask you to play, but you weren't around."

Tsuya and Sho walked out of the hidden room and back into the corridors. "I was out attending to Lord Sheridan with my father; he's come to participate in the Celestial Festival."

"Ugh," Sho made a face, "isn't that my family's traditional drinking night?"

"Haha, it's not just drinking. Certainly there's lots to drink and plenty of good spirits, but they also participate in games,-"

"Gambling."

"And dances-"

"Strip teases."

"And..."

"And what?" Sho didn't know there was more.

"Well," Tsuya was hesitent, "I've been invited to participate this year."

"You!? But you're only 15!"

"My father said that I am to be a bartender, so technically I'll be working. But he said I could sample some of the drinks during my breaks."

"Give me some! I'll visit during the festival." Sho was excited.

"Sorry, Sho. Your father and my father forbade it."

"Well.... they don't have to know... right?"

"Oh yes we do," said a familiar voice. Sho jumped and turned around to see Jiro.

"Ah, Jiro-sensei!!" Sho was smiling, "... how long were you standing behind us?"

Jiro was grinning. "Long enough."
