Re: TEXT & DRIVE = DRINK & DRIVE

Postby snobound » Wed Jan 05, 2011 4:11 pm

Think about it... most people can't drive under IDEAL conditions, let alone when trying to peck away at a tiny keyboard. I believe that Vermont recently made texting while driving illegal, though talking is still okay. Both are illegal in Connecticut. If such legislation can save a few teens from an untimely death, then I'm okay with it.

What are truckers supposed to do without their radios? That's going a little overboard, I think.

If you can't go somewhere without having to text someone, you need to hire a driver. It should be illegal. I wish people wouldn't talk on cell phones but I hesitate to say that should be illegal. While people can't really do it despite their apparent belief otherwise I could see a potential emergency requiring a use of the phone. Texting is different as it takes your eyes off the road.

I have to agree with Snobound on this, there are a lot of people that can't drive on a clear day and a good road with no distractions, much less trying to look at a phone.

I got a ticket in CT for talking on my phone while driving a year ago... 100 bucks! I was able to have it dismissed by sending in a receipt showing that I had purchased one of those blue tooth thingies. Fumbling around with a blue tooth is probably just as distracting, though it's a convenient loophole. I would like to get one of those devices that broadcasts the phone conversation through a vehicle's sound system. No hands, and no june bug clipped to your earlobe!

I've heard the Bluetooth and other similar wireless headsets are only moderately safer than holding the phone up, mostly because it does leave both hands free, but you have to fumble with it initially and the conversation can be distracting. I don't know how accurate that really is.

My dad's car has one of those integrated phone systems you're talking about (I have no idea what they're actually called) and I've been in the car when he's used it a couple of times. It would make things a lot simpler.

I have talked and driven before but try not to and it's been a pretty rare occasion. I'm not going to answer if there is much traffic around.

Here in the UK, its been illegal to use a mobile/cell phone while driving for years now. If caught, (I think) its a fine of £60 (can someone confirm this?) and 3 points on the person's driving license. For those who dont know the points system, driving offences here carry a penalty of 3,6,9,10,12 points (but not restricted to those numbers) and if a driver gets a total of 12 or more, they get banned from driving with the possibility of being made to retake their test.

As for texting, I'm not sure but I think its the same as calling someone...
When I think of something interesting to say, this is where I shall put it.

Here is my argument about the subject:

Texting is distracting because you are looking at your phone instead of concentrating on the road which could lead to accidents. I believe that it is a right action to impose on people. Legislation like this will save lives.
You will have to subdue me to restrain me. I been a bad boy so make sure you torture me too with anything but pain.

There are some that can text without looking at the phone. Obviously this does NOT mean you can go out and do it, just saying that there are people who can still watch the road while texting. But on the other hand, they dont have their fullc oncentration on the road... :?

Here in Germany it's illegal to use the cell phone while driving, unless you have a hands free device of some sort (bluetooth or whatever). This includes dialing.
Personally I use a voice controlled hands free solution. Once one gets used to the speech menu, it's pretty comfortable.

Driving around each day a lot I really can tell..often people who drive unattentive are using their cell phones. Of course, not everyone using it drives bad...but it seems to be a pretty big factor in it for many people. So I really appreciate when it's not allowed.

Cheers

I know of at least several major accidents in my area over the past few years where texting was a factor. In one case, the person doing to texting got herself killed when she got so distracted she went right off the road and nearly smashed into a TV News truck! She slammed into another car; I can't remember now if anyone else was killed. She was a student at the local University.
IMHO texting while driving is no better than driving while drunk!

Studies have been conducted showing that texting while driving can actually be WORSE than drinking and driving. At least most drunks actually LOOK at the road.

Laws currently on the books restricting phone usage aren't enough of a deterrent. I have numerous friends in CT where bluetooth earpieces are required... I'll be talking with them while they're driving, and will commonly hear...."Hold on! Passing a cop!" They hold the phone out of sight for a moment, and then back to the conversation. People don't like to change, nor do they like to be told what to do.

Well, both offences have been Illegal in the UK for sometime now. I loathe people who use their cell phone for any use while driving.... invest in blue tooth if you so wish to talk on your phone, but when it comes to texting, well I am sure its not that important to put yourself and others at risk just for the sake of texting whoever text you back. I am not a driver myself only a learner, but I could put a lot of drivers to shame with my knowledge. Drink driving is also a serious offence, and I would happily agree with the law to put a ban on that.... people don't see the real risks they cause from doing such offences....

Its unlike America to not already have a law banning people from text driving or using cell phones.... most countries it is totally illegal and carries penalties.

The problem is that too many people are complaining about losing their freedoms.
I agree with that in some cases, but not in this case. I definitely don't feel support for those who want the freedom to act irresponsibly!

In 2008 I was stopped at a STOP sign when a driver who was using a cell phone and was also drunk came right across and smashed into my driver side! I got five broken ribs. We should not simply prohibit texting while driving. The laws should be written to prohibit doing anything that takes ones attention away from driving. You do not smoke, nor drink hot liquids, nor drive drunk, nor shave, nor cut your toenails nor have your cocker spaniel jumping back and forth from seat to seat. One comprehensive law should cover all the infarctions. You drive and only drive, period.
