What does Progressives mean to you?

Postby Male shortstied » Tue Nov 02, 2010 12:17 am

I have niticed a lot of people talking in this section, but it seems like none of ya seem to understand what Progressives realy are; These are some of my opinions, & stuff I got ather acurite sources.

Progressives are people who believe in Communism, they believe that you all as well as me are dum, dum, dummes, or that we are stupid, that we cannot think for ourselves, & there for we need them to do it all for us, & so that is why they beleive in totel government, because to them only government can save us, as well as help us; because of that they hate Religion, or faith as many of us call it because they believe that the government is God.

That couldn't be further from the truth, and I'm curious as to what you consider an "acurite" source. Regardless, I'll take a stab at it.

For me, a progressive is a pragmatist- someone who is willing to try new and daring solutions to the numerous social ills plaguing our civilization. A progressive is more likely than not to be comfortable with government intervention in the face of inhuman levels of injustice and inequality. A progressive is rarely satisfied with the status quo, and is willing to experiment without much regard for the preservation of old ways, ideas, and institutions. What bothers many (maybe you too, shortstied) is that progressives often think/vote with their hearts, not their wallets.

For the record, communism and progressivism are two VERY different things. One is a failed economic system, while the other a political ideology.

Anyone who is a working class stiff like me soon discovers that the Republican party doesn't give a rat's ass about them. I am not a communist thank you very much; just a hard working guy who wants a fair shake, not work for a system that is rapidly degenerating until it soon will be little better than Feudalism.
Maybe you like a system that rewards management but not the ordinary workers who keep Society going. I don't. I haven't had a pay raise in six years despite working my butt off, while my boss takes a vacation five to six times a year. If you think that's fair, you must not be a wage slave. Lucky you.
I used to think like you too Boys Shortstied - until I had to actually work for a living.

Progressivists can be difficult to really define as it's a very broad category in its most basic sense. Generally, if someone is looking for sweeping changes to the government and/or society, especially in a liberal direction, they can be classified as progressive. Progressivism and communism are two entirely different things. Some progressives are communists, but most are not, especially in the United States.
