It's crazy how in this modern age, with all the hyper technology on the plane incl. all the passengers' mobile phones they can't determine even an approximate location of the plane.

I think the Malaysian government are either extremely incompetent (with so many mixed messages and references such as "the guy might look like Mario Balotelli)...... or the worse scenario, they are trying to hide something.

Potentially some major catastrophe occurred that could have been avoided by the airline/government/pilot and now they are trying to prevent the truth from coming out by acting dumb.

There is something very suspicious going on.

And on a lighthearted note, I can't help thinking about the Lost TV Series when i see this story. Perhaps they are all on an island with polar bears and hidden trapdoors?

It is easy to point fingers at one government. Is is just because it is Asian and not First World Standards that you say the government is incompetent? Are Western countries better in dealing with airline crashes?

Re: MH370: Still no news

Postby skybird137 » Wed Mar 12, 2014 2:30 am

I don't know how correct this is, but most crashes happen close to take off or landing. This makes them easier to find.

When a plane crashes over open water it is not so easy, especially if it has impacted at high speed which could cause most of the plane to go into the water.

As in any other incident like this, we should wait until the plane is actually found before coming up with claims..

When your mobile phone is on properly, then your location is stored in the network.

However, unless the South China Sea has a major mobile network coverage, with phone masts floating in the middle of the sea, any phone would be far out of range. All mobiles should be off or on Airplane Mode anyway.

Sorry, I wasn't saying that you can use mobile phones to track the plane. I meant that when you have aircraft that cost millions to build then really there should be measures in place to be able to track constantly where they are at all times - and even if it's out of range under sea, at least the point of impact should be known.

As for the mobile phones comment, again you have phones that can download movies in a few minutes, you can access bank accounts, you can turn on your oven from work even (!), and many more incredible things - yet there aren't measures in place again to determine at least an estimated flight path.

We can put a man on the moon and track satellites that we send thousands of miles into space, yet we can't track the flight of a £100,000,000 aircraft?

And i'm not calling the Malaysian government incompetent for losing the plane, i'm saying that their behavior afterwards has seemed very unprofessional and indecisive. They really should have taken charge of the situation instead of sending out so many mixed messages.

I don't normally go for conspiracy theories but don't estimate how powerful the airlines and Boeing are. If they believe that their aircraft was at all at fault, they will do everything possible to make sure that the truth doesn't get revealed.

well who are you going to blame? Are you going to say, stop space exploration, build gadgets to track aircraft? Might as well told the military war machine to stop building new gadgets then. Not logical.

Why are you acting so aggressively defensive? I'm only saying what my impressions are.

No one is to blame for the accident yet, there isn't any proof of anything yet.

I'm saying that the aftermath that has been handled poorly.

I never said to stop space exploration. I'm saying if you can track a satellite travelling to the far reaches of the solar system, then surely the technology should be made available to track aircraft.

If you can have such a satellite, why can't all the people of the earth acess it. Why both with travelling then?

Stupid logic.

Maybe because you don't have a planet in the way when a satellite is going overhead or when you had an Apollo Module going to the moon.

The only way an aircraft would be constantly monitored is for a signal to be sent to a geostationary satellite and back. That would require a large dish with tracking capabilities on the aircraft and the power generation to send that signal 22,000 miles. The dish would somehow have to survive not being torn off as the aircraft travels at over 600 mph and would have to keep in contact with the satellite with every little turn.

"It's your logic whicch is wraped. By your case, why have people built so many destructive weapons, when natural diseases have spread more rapidly?"

That's an equally good point but unrelated to this topic.

If an airline has financed an incredibly expensive aircraft then surely it's in their best interests to always know where it is - this is the airline i'm talkig about, not necessarily the government.

And I don't think you understand my point about the satellite.

The Satellite called Voyager 1 is currently 127.19 AU (1.903×1010 km) away from Earth (thank you Wikipedia) - i don't actually know how far that is in numerical terms but it seems A LOT.

I'm saying that if we can track Voyager 1 at such an incredible distance we should be able to track planes travelling round our own planet.

Skybird, I understand how satellites work, I'm not saying that the same process could be used to track planes, i'm saying that the safety measure needs to put in in place.

Regardless of that I'm still saying that this whole affair has been handled with in a very messy and unprofessional manner by all parties involved.

The Satellite called Voyager 1

That's the first time I've ever heard it called a satellite.

I'm saying that if we can track Voyager 1 at such an incredible distance we should be able to track planes travelling round our own planet.

Try tracking Voyager One or any satellite when it is below the horizon. It won't matter how big the dish is or how much power you have, you won't be able to do it. This is the problem with tracking aircraft that are out to sea.

It's Line of Sight restriction, as simple as that.

ADDON:

I don't know how accurate this is, but there are new reports of the data reporting system going off fourteen minutes before the transponder. If the plane was still flying, it still had four hours of fuel left. It seems that the US are now searching the Indian Ocean.

Are they absolutely positive this thing went down in the ocean, and not on land? There are a lot of heavily forested islands that make up Malaysia and Indonesia that the plane would've crossed. Everybody is so convinced it went down in the water if it did come down on land it may well have been overlooked.

This is a real possibility, and that is one of the problems in this search, if we discount the idea that the aircraft crashed at the place where the ACARS and transponder stopped transmitting.

Well, instead of just sitting around, we could all help search for it. DigitalGlobe has amassed satellite images from the area the night/morning that the flight disappeared. You, an everyday person, can help identify wreckage, oil slicks, and life rafts from the photographs: http://www.tomnod.com/nod/

An AU (astronomical unit) is the mean distance between the earth and the sun, roughly 93 million miles. Voyager would be 1,182,867,000,000 miles distant, or in simpler terms, 1.183 trillion miles.

The nearest star (Proxima Centauri) is 26,446,657,334,400, (26.5 trillion miles away; 4.5 light years.) It takes light, traveling at 186,232 miles per second, 8.33 minutes to get from the sun, to the earth.

Your math is off by a factor of 100, DS. The actual figure for the distance to Voyager is 11.83 billion miles. The distance you cited would be nearly one third of a light year. It is actually only one light day.

The malaysian government does seem to be sending mixed signals, as if they;re hiding something.
I'm beginning to wonder if some trigger happy idiot in a military jet shot the plane down - like what we accidentally did to a Russian flight some 30 years ago and to an iranian jet a while before that, and as the Russians did with one of ours near korea around the same time. Crap like that can still happen, after all... that would explain all the hush-hush and the confusion.
