Put out the flames that is "Jump in the Fire"

Postby chadmc90 » Sun Dec 13, 2015 10:10 am

Title says it all. This section add nothing postive to the website, as it's mostly shit like this that is posted:

viewtopic.php?f=23&p=200075#p200075

I've added a poll as well. Lets see what the community thinks.

Whilst I agree about the current thread, I can see purpose in having such a category.
At the minute, though, certain remarks are not adding to what should be the feelgood atmosphere of the site.
I am torn but I shall be interested in the response to your poll. Unfortunately, polls don't usually glean enough responses to be significant.

I see where you're coming from. The section should be a place where people can debate with civility. But unfortunately certian individuals have turned to flaming and downright insulting one another. If it was kept to debating then fine. But it's not that way right now sadly.

The only time I've ever seen anything remotely important on Jump in the Fire has been when a major disaster or terror attack takes place and someone makes a tribute.... however even that gets ruined because it just leads to more pointless "debating" I commented on one thread that the section looks no better than a Youtube comment section, so you have my vote.

Plus I admit that I'm getting sick of literally nobody giving me feedback on the stories that I stay up at night to write, so I know how Chad feels.

I agree with xtc, it's okay to discuss politics etc... but those off topic/spam posts ruin it for everyone.
Isn't it possible to remove those posts and warn the poster?

I like the section itself, but I do think people have been misusing it lately. Although you can say that about some of the other sections too.

Perhaps tighter mod control would do the trick there? Rude posters warned quicker, topics getting locked sooner, those things.

Fair point. As a mod, should I jump in as soon as I see a post I don't like? I think you will see the problem with that.

Personally speaking, all the crap coupled with the lack of well written stories of interest to me is making me feel like chucking the whole thing in. Any suggestions?

Okay for once this isn't complete bullshit:

You can't delete all the bad written stories! I mean OK their shit and nobody will read them fair enough the author will feel like shit just for the lack of response on it trust me... But you can't expect all the members to be good whritters like you or AlexUSA and if there wasn't thoses crappy stories the good ones wouldn't be that great... Yup that's all I have to say of interesting for now.

Postby xtc » Sun Dec 13, 2015 2:29 pm

You misunderstand me; I was not suggesting removing the weaker stories, all members of good will have their right to contribute.
It's the crap going on that is not relevant to the stories that is sapping my will to carry on. As a mod, I try to help. I will even make friendly suggestions (You know who you are!) before hitting the "nuke" button but this weekend marked the tipping point. Enough said for now.

A year ago, I would have voted "No" but things have changed since then, leaving me to think that this place would be better off without that section. So I voted "Yes".
I should also point out that my decision was reinforced by the way THIS VERY discussion seems to spiralling down.

The comment that started it all:

"Please, somebody euthanize this section and the "Last One to Post on This Thread Wins." Both sections are abused. There are some users who have about 500-1000 posts on here, over 90% of which are from one or both of those. People seem to be here just to troll on those threads, and that is not a good thing. It also takes away from folks like chadmc90 who have been here from years and makes the contributions they have made to this site seem minor because newbies look to the high post count users for advice. People have even gotten themselves banned from the site from starting fights in this section (though it seems the banned user managed to sneak back in)."

In the same vein, there should be total destruction of the "Last Person to Post on This Thread Wins" as it, too, has been misused as a chatroom for many users to just artificially drive up their post counts. The thread should be nuked when you have people who have 300-600 posts just in that thread, but only 400-700 posts in total. People see high post counts as experienced posters, but they will be getting rude surprises.

I agree with this. Granted forums are meant to be places of mass discussion, but regardless of the community post counts are seen as matters of seniority and experience. If most of the posts are garbage then the user is even less knowledgable about the topic at hand and is just attempting to garner status from spam. Polite discussion of topics in Jump in the Fire have become few and far in between. Frankly, if we really want to keep a forum like that, I would rather be unsubscribed to it. Same goes for any threads that exist just for the sake of posting.

I actually belong to a forum where posting purely to drive up post counts is specifically mentioned as an offense.

I don't care about post counts. However, for what it's worth I do think that section should take a hike. I just don't think this is really the type of forum where we need to talk about a lot of the things that are posted in there.

Opinions are like armpits. Everybody has a couple, and they usually stink. (Even mine)

That being said, I wonder if there would be such a call for censorship, had the controversial topic been one that most liberals agreed with.

I am reminded of a quote. I can't remember whose quote, but it went "Sir, I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death, your right to say it."

I am also reminded of the second article of the "Bill of No Rights," attributed to Louis Napper: Paraphrased: "You do not have the right to never be offended. You can leave the room, change the channel, tune in another station, ignore the speaker, or express a different opinion, but freedom means freedom for everybody, not just you, and those that agree with you. The world is full of dolts. Deal with it."

(You can Google "Bill of No Rights" to read the whole thing.)

Oh, trust me if you're post was about Jeff bush with the same text it would be no less meaningless :big: It wasn't the content that made the topic controversial. A big part was the lack of content.
If the topic was Clinton would be a rotten choice because (insert reasons) it would be a lot better received.

Honestly, what spawned this whole idea is misguided. I see nothing wrong with the section itself it's the users posting to that section like Drawscore's latest thread in there. It is what I classify as a "shitpost" because it doesn't add to a debate or challenge views, just flinging metaphorical mud at others while being unintelligent and lowbrow.

I say the section is fine but needs to be more tightly moderated.

Totally in agreement with this. I also subscribe to the attitude that if you don't like something, avoid it. Nobody is forced to post or read the Jump Into The Fire section. It's not a requirement to be on this board. So for those who are so averse to it, don't visit it. Simple as that.

Besides...it's just so obvious that "Trools" or any other things or topics will be there so as thoses little fights. I mean shure it can upgrade grades Really fast by saying tons of bullshit...I can consider that as a problem.

But it isn't called Jump in the Fire for nothing you know. Even the topics are asking for what they become or desirve to become. If your to sensitive to go over there then just don't go. Nobody forces you to go like told above. that said I'm done for now! LOLOLOLOL

Well then, we should have the chance to avoid it. Give us the option so that the topic area does NOT show up on the man page and that we do NOT have it showing up on new posts. Otherwise saying avoid it is a bit silly at best.

I find a decided irony here... those most vocal about KEEPING this section are those who cause the problems...

I'm very astounded at the amount of feedback this thread has gotten. I know if my stories got this much feedback I might still be an active writer. Just saying that this once used to be a website dedicated to stories, not political topics that constitutes the overwhelming majority of Junp in the Fire.

We all have the feedback problem. I voted yes, get rid of it. I'd vote for getting rid of roleplay threads too, but I don't think that'd get much traction.

Apparently this was a made up quote by someone who pretended that Voltaire had said it. A classic "I'll put my words into someone else's mouth so that they will appear to be more important."

Making up something and attributing it to someone else, that does seem awfully familiar...

Um, you have that choice (or chance) to avoid it. Scroll past and don't click on it. That is not a difficult thing to do and takes essentially no time. There are sections of this site that I have no interest in, so I scroll past them. I ignore them. I don't petition to have them eliminated. Live and let live.
