Part 2 is now posted and the tie ups have begun

OK so I have what I think is an original concept. The idea is a competition designed to raise awareness about special needs. It’s based in the high school system and students get a credit for compleating the course. They can also win scholarships and other prizes, all stuff the students need for university/collage.
Participants go to a camp where they spend the next month or so for the competition, the concept is that every day the competitors line up and draw cards that represent "impairments" for example one could draw a "mute card” this represents the inability to speech and that person would be gagged for the day. There cards draw are in 2 colors Green and yellow a green card means that’s your only impairment for the day, a yellow card is the same thing but the participant draws a second to go with it, if the second card is yellow again they draw another, a participant can have up to 3 impairments for one day.

The story follows 3 girls who sign up for the competition so they can take an extra spare, this meant that while they don’t have to win they do have to complete the course or they will have to come back for an extra year of high school. (All are grade 12) There is Kate Sara and Jen; Kate is 5.6, with brown hair slim and well built, she is mature and intelligent and a bit skeptical when she need to be: Sara is 5.8 dirty blond, vary athletic good humored, laughs at mostly everything and has a vary authoritative personality, she’s not mean but she doesn’t take and BS: and Jen is 5.2 and vary skinny, she is a bit shy ad slightly socially awkward (just a bit) goes to parties but doesn’t really know what to do when she’s there.

The scoring system is based on accumulating points, every day after roll call and the dishing out of impairments participants will compete in that days "event" or "challenge" the event is generally some form of obstacle course or endurance challenge (think Survivor) a participant can earn from 0-5 points during the challenge. These points are accumulated over the course of the competition. If a person’s impairment prevents them from competing they receive a zero. The idea of the competition is not to be fair but to represent the unfairness of real life situations. Someone who has their hands restrained is less likely to get 4 or 5 points then someone who is just gagged. Unless the day’s event involves teamwork in which case not being able to speech could be a major fall back.

Safety is taken very seriously as a result of all the restraints and such, so during these competions things like fall harnesses, protective knee and elbow pads, lifejackets, protective vests, and helmets are used whenever there is a chance of them being needed, they also tend to be much more extreme then required. For example a large hockey or football helmet and elbow and knee pads are often used in simple running and jumping courses. Or a full body fall harness being used when there is risk of falling 3 or 4 feet. EXT. A fall or 3 or feet for someone who is only gagged in nothing but someone with their hands and arms tightly locked behind them might suffer serious injury.

Sleeping and travel arrangements are determined by a contestants score. The worse they are doing the more heavily restrained they are for sleeping and transportation. The restraints used for this represent real life situations for people with mental health problems. I.e. medical and special needs restraints such as humane restraints and EZOn vests. The exception to this is the "level 4" restraints which are more restrictive than anything used in real life.

Includes a neck brace and head strap that holds head in rigid position and a sensory deprivation hood and inflatable gag.

*** If a contestant falls to below 20 points they enter the "dependency" zone in which they do not leave there bed or restraint system if a contestant goes a full 24 hours in this zone they are bumped to within 20 points of average. A contestant can opt out of this but is then expelled from the competition.

Whoa. This is pretty impressive. You have an entire list of things, and an entire story laid out. Your characters have personality, which I love, because I get really annoyed when people have characters which are just basic figureheads. But you ask for someone to write it for you. Why not write it yourself? You seem to have the talent, and the story, or at least most of it. It can't be that hard, right?
In the end, it matters not how many breaths you took, but how many took your breath away.

Heres what I have already written. I might have some time today and on Thursday when I can write more.

If You don't care about character development or setting and such then you can skip chapter 1 as there are no tie ups until chapter 2.

Chapter 1: Part 1:
Kate closed her locker as the bell rang signalling the beginning of the lunch period. She began to walk down the hall as it filled with people in the direction of the back door. She was wearing tight fitting blue jeans and a light blue polo shirt. Kate and her friends generally ate outside to avoid the crowded cafeteria as did many other seniors at their high school. She was just getting to the back door when she saw Jennifer coming down the hall from the opposite direction. Kate waved and smiled as she moved through the door and waited just outside to avoid blocking the crowded hallway.
“Hey” Said Jen as she extracted herself from the flow of people “Did Sara text you?” They started walking away from the school toward the grassy hill at the far end of the parking lot. Jen was dressed in loose fitting jeans and what looked like her big brothers hoodie which was sagging over one shoulder exposing a white T-shirt underneath
“No what’s up?”
“I dono something about dropping World history” adjusting the sheaves of her oversized garment back up above her hands.
“What? We all need that to make 6 credits for next year!”
“I dono”
“Does she know that? She’s not doing is now is she?”
Kate turned to look back at the school
“I dono, I mean no I don’t think so, like she was talking about some extra credit thing”
They arrived at the hill and sat down on the grass to eat. Jen was in the middle of taking a bite of her sandwich when she saw Sara jogging toward them from the school.
“Mummph”
Sara was wearing a tight fitting sport shirt and shorts even though it was only about 15 degrees out
She nudged Kate with her elbow and then swung her head to point out Sara without dropping her food.
Kate turned
“Sara what the hell is this crap about dropping History? How are you doing that?”
Sara closed the remaining distance before responding.
“I told you not to tell her!”
“MUmmm? Nom U dunnt” mumbled Jen through a mouth full of sandwich
“How are you so small?” Sara was genuinely interested in the metabolic science of her tinny, food disposal unit, of a friend.
“HOW. ARE. YOU. SKIPPING. OUT. ON. HISTORY???”Kate spoke with exaggerated slowness and anxiousness
“hum?” Sara’s wonder trance was broken and she turned to face Kate “ow ya!” she rummaged through her jean pockets and extracted a badly crimpled and over folded sheet of paper. She flopped down unceremoniously between her two friends and pulled open the brutalised paper.
“SO! I was hanging out at near the guidance center after practice last night and there’s this poster about extra credit and such. Like there always is, but I was bored and I was waiting for my rents to pick me up so I’m like reading it, just all causal ya know. Like I’m not actually looking for anything.”
“YA YA HOW ARE YOU SKIIPING?!” Kate was losing patience
“IM GETTING THERE! SOoooo Anyway as I’m reading this thing it’s all like “”receive a U level credit for taking part in the completion ”” ” Sara read the last part off the paper in her hands with an exaggerated voice similar to a professor giving a lecture.
Kate grabbed the paper out of Sara’s hands and began reading
“The top ten final contestants will all receive a scholarship for $5, 000 and contestants will receive a U level credit for taking part in the completion “
“$5, 000?!” Jen jumped into the conversation leaning over Sara to look at the paper
“What is this completion?” questioned Kate

Re: Special Needs Competition

Postby Amagi420 » Sun Jul 15, 2012 2:24 pm

Chapter 1: Part 2:
“It’s like this special needs awareness thing. I was talking to Ms. Mclean about it and she said its legit, it’s a 30 day competition as long as you actually do it, like finish it, and don’t bail half way through you get the credit”
“Ok but how that work, I mean how are you marked, How do you get a grade for the universities to use in your average”
“She said different schools are doing it different ways there having us write an essay after on “”What we learned”” “Sara held up two fingers on each hand to represent quotation marks and used an ironic tone.
“So our whole mark is based on ONE essay?”
“That and how we do in the competition but Ms. Mclean basically said that she’d just give us a 90”
Kate read the paper over a couple times before continuing “Is there more info on what is actually is?”
Sara hesitated “ahh ya, there is” She reached back into her pocket and extracted another brutalised sheet of paper handing it to Kate. A second later it turned out to be two sheets folded together; the staple had ripped out of one as a result of the abuses of Sara’s pocket. Kate attempted to smoothen them out and began to read silently. Jen attempted to read over her shoulder. Sara watched them and bite her lip.
“The hell?” Kate said reading “This is kinda weird”
“Well ya that’s like the point tho right, it’s supposed to like shock you into a better understanding and stuff.”
Jen leaned back and readjusted her sweater watching to see which way the other girls would go.
“I dono if I want to” She looked at the paper and read “Have my ability to walk, talk and be independent and self sufficient temporally suspended to provide an insight into the lives of those unable to provide for themselves...” She looked up making eye contact first with Sara who just grinned and shrugged and then at Jen who gave her a disturbed facial expression.
“OW Come on guys! Would you rather 30 days of this a chance to win $5, 000 and a guaranteed %90 or 3 months of Mr. Jacobs talking about “”How much the people of the mesapainian villages suffered to produce the seeds of early civilization”” “ Sara lapsed again into her lecturers voice.
Jen took the paper from Kate and read it for a minute “What’s a straight jacket?”
Kate’s head snapped to look at Sara
Sara bite her lip and looked off to the side “ah it’s like a shirt but with like strapped and stuff, you know for... crazy people”
“what the hell?” Kate’s face was not a positive response.
“K you get like randomly assigned a thing everyday, its not like straight jackets usually its like “”Ow no I cant use my fingers”” or “”Ow no I cant walk vary well”” But im getting an easy credit and a 90 and maby $5,000 So Who gives a shit”” like common guys! We can sleep in everyday all semester! And like who are you kidding your not going to get a 90 with Mr. Jacobs, well maybe Jen cus shes a nerd and all but-“
“Hey” Jen’s protest to her status as a nerd went unnoticed in Sara’s torrential monologue
“-the rest of us no WAY so that could boost our marks and then there’s entry scholarships for good marks at most universities so there could be even more money there even if we don’t win, which we have a good chance of cus the top 10 all get money and theres only like 50 people competing so its like 1 in 5 and im sure it really isn’t that bad and-“
Kate cut her off “Wait what? There’s only 50 people?”
Sara stoped and when dead silent
“SARA How do you know there’s only going to be 50 people who sign up!?!”
Sara went white as a sheet and didn’t say a word
“SARA!”
“Ahhhhhhh cus the sighn ups closed last night....”
Jen’s head snapped from Sara to Kate and her eyes when huge as she started to understand where this was going.
Kate’s voice when from loud and frantic to quite slow and deliberately controlled “Sara. If the sighn ups closed last night. How are we supposed to Sign up?...”
Sara bit her lip again and smiled vainly “Ahhhh you don’t need to because I already did for you?”
Kate and Jen’s heads both pivoted away from Sara to look each other in the eyes in shared despair.
Sara chirped in from behind them “On the plus side we can go out Thursday night now!”

Re: Special Needs Competition

Postby Amagi420 » Mon Jul 16, 2012 12:54 pm

Chapter 2: Part 1:

Several months had gone by and the school year had ended. Kate had been mad at Sara for several weeks before giving it up, primarily as a result of Jens peace keeping efforts, She had gone to Ms. Mclean at guidance to see if it was possible to get her schedule changed back but the history course had already filled up with other students and there were no other U credit courses. The only way to undo the changes Sara had made would be to reveal that Sara had filled out the forms to change it in Kate’s name, which would have gotten Sara into a ton of trouble, possibly even ruining her acceptance to university. So Kate and Jen had sucked it up and ended up enjoying their mornings off. At the end of the year Sara had been quick to come to them with the knowledge that almost half of Mr. Jacobs world history class had failed and the other half had come out with 50s and 60s. And then the day was upon them, they were told to report to the school for 6:30 am to board the bus for WillowTree camp where the competition would be taking place.
Sara and Jen sat together on the bus and Kate sat across the aisle with another girl who’s name was Kirsten, she was going into first year med school and planned on specialising in special needs her university had recommended this course for all its undergrads. The bus ride was pretty standard talk was mostly centered around what the next month would be like but no one knew what to expect. The ages of the other contestants varied from 16 to about 20 and the majority where all girls there where only 3 or 4 guys on the bus, although there would be more people arriving from other schools. They arrived at the camp at about 11:00 in the morning. Kate, Sara and Jen met up just outside the bus and gathered with the others in the yard where a crowd of other students who had already arrived had already gathered. A moment later an Employee walked forward from a group standing next to the buildings.
“Hello my names is Evin I’m the project coordinator here and first off I’d like to welcome you all to WillowTree Camp, this will be your home for the next 30 days, where very pleased with the turnout, this project has been a long time coming and it’s something that I and I the other staff feel very passionately about...”
Sara and Kate exchanged a look. he went on like that for some time
“Ok at this point where going to split you into your groups, then you’ll get a more detailed look at how the days will work here. We all hope that this will be an enlightening experience that will help to shape your world view and open your eyes to how fortunate we here are.”
Kate manoeuvred herself closer to her friends to ensure they were not separated and soon they where being shepherded away down the street lead by a staff member by the name of Amanda. She looked to be in her late 20s or early 30s with dark blond hair that was just past shoulder length and tied at the back, she seemed to be good humoured and a bit over excited, she seemed to fit the roll of camp supervisor perfectly, she was wearing black sports shorts and a blue camp T-shirt. The groups had been made gender specific as they would all be sharing a “barracks” style sleeping quarters. Amanda informed them that she would be there mentor and that should they have any concerns or issues that she is the one to bring them to. There were 4 groups in total 3 girls and one of guys which was slightly larger than the others.
Amanda took them around and showed them the various buildings: the mess hall where they would eat breakfast and supper, Lunch would generally be eaten wherever they were in the middle of the day; the kitchens which they would be responsible for cleaning one a week; and the yard where they first arrived which is where they would have roll call in the morning at 7:00 sharp and draw there impairment for the day. At this point Amanda stopped to explain how this process would work in more detail. The yard included a driveway where the busses had been earlier as well as a shed several picnic tables and a large dirt area where they stopped just short of the shed.
“Ok, You!” Amanda pointed at a girl standing in the front of their group.
“me?”
“Yes You! Get up here”
The girl walked forward and Amanda spun her around by her shoulders to face the group.
“What’s your name?”
“Kirstin”
“Ok Kirstin your going to help me demonstrate exactly how this is going to work. Now at the begging of everyday your all going to line up here and take a card” She proceeded to grab a bucket from a nearby picnic table “Now reach in and grab yourself a card... go on just grab one”
Kirstin hesitantly reached in and extracted a card.
“Right then let’s see, General movement level 2, and its Yellow! Great exampling ok so because you pulled out a yellow card you can go ahead and grab a second one to join it”
She reached back in and retrieved a second card which Amanda quickly relived her of.
“And back movement. Nice those work well together. Now if she had pulled out another yellow card she would have retrieved a 3rd card which is the limit. Now lets get you suited up!”
Amanda walked into the shed and came back out with an assortment of items.
“Ok so you drew general movement which is these guys here” she held up an assortment of straps and chains “level 2, the level just refers to how long the chains are and thereby how much it restricts you movement level 2 is medium 3 is short 1 is long. So now give me your hands there, perfect. Now these straps go around your wrists and ankles and such and the chains connect them all.” She proceeded to secure the first wrist strap around Kirstin’s left wrist and then her right, The straps where made out of what looked like leather and had the same fastener as a belt. Amanda had now mover onto Kirstin’s feet, kneeling down to secure the straps around her ankles. She then took the first of the chains and clipped Kirstin’s wrist together with about 6 or 7 inches of chain, then she kneeled down again and pulled her feet together to reach a similar chain between them. And drew a 3rd chain up to connect her feet to her wrists, there was enough slack in this one for Kirstin to raise her arms to about chest level. Amanda then retrieved the last strap from the pile “ok and the last bit here now, chin up for me” Kirstin held her chin up as instructed and Amanda proceeded to place the strap around her neck holding her hair back with her other hand she then fastened the strap in place and connected it to the chain connecting her writs preventing Kirsten from dropping her hands below waist level without bending over.
“Ok now normally we would also have a belt around your waist but because you also drew back movement we can just use the brace.” Amanda quickly retrieved another object from the shed and help it up for them to se, it was made of hard grey plastic and fabric and had a mesh of dark brown straps handing off of it “Ok so this is a back brace, one of several we have here” she turned to Kirstin “turn around for me will you please?” Kirstin obliged slowly as a result of her predicament with the chains and Amanda got to work “ The idea here is to prevent the wearer from being able to bend there back or turn from the waist, as is the case with many people suffering from physical disabilities, many would even be wearing this vary brace” She then proceeded to place the brace against Kirstin’s back and then moved around to the around holding the brace in place by pulling on a pair of the straps which was causing Kirstin to have to lean back to maintain her balance Amanda then clipped the straps together at Kirstin’s waist and pulled them tight making a waist strap she then proceeded to reach over Kirstin’s shoulder and pulled a pair of straps around to the front she then clipped these into a pair of straps that came around just under Kirstin’s armpits before connecting them to the waist band. Amanda then kneeled down again and reached between Kirstin’s legs to retrieve a pair of crotch straps and buckled them into the sides of the harness. Kirstin winced visibly as Amanda gave the crotch straps an extra tug so sung the whole harness down and ensure it was properly positioned. “There so now we can simply attach Kirstin’s wrist chain to this harness” she did so by rapping another chain through the waist band of the harness and securing it to the chain connecting Kirstin’s wrists” This is the sort of thing your get used to when someone draws more than one card we can’t predict all the combinations so some improvising will always be required. “Amanda turned to Kirstin “Go ahead move around see what it feels like and such” Kirstin shuffled around on her feet being forced to take tinny steps and made her way back to the group.
“OK” Amanda was back at it “Anyone else want to get a head start on the completion?!” The crowd of girls was silent. Kate suddenly realised she was standing right behind Sara and before the idea had even fully formed in her head she grabbed Sara’s but and pinched as hard as she could. Sara gave a loud yell in shock and jumped forward, right into the clearing. Amanda was ecstatic “Great that’s outstanding! Grab a card” she held the bucket forward to Sara. Kate could hardly suppress her laughter as Sara gave her a dark glare and reached into the bucket.”
