When Emma and Ingrid emerged from the lift, Emma was stunned to see a large fancy hotel-type restaurant sitting in front of them. There were twenty round tables set up in four rows of five with white tablecloths covering them and lit candles set up in silver candle holders at random places all over the room. There was another glittering chandelier in the ceiling and a grand piano sat in one corner. Large swooping red velvet curtains covered all of the tinted windows, so there was no view. Emma was slightly disappointed because she had thought it might be nice to look out of the window. Ingrid gestured at a table. "Sit here with me and someone will take our order." Emma obeyed.
As soon as they were seated, Emma noticed there were covered menus laid out on top of each table. Ingrid handed a menu to Emma and took one for herself. "In case you're wondering, this building used to be a hotel, but it was eventually abandoned because of lack of business. As you can see, this area is mostly deserted, which is why the hotel never really took off as a business. Our school initially bought this property to use for our interviews and we liked the original settings so much that we kept all of them and restored the damaged ones." Out of nowhere, an expressionless man who was tall and slender dressed in a black suit with a white shirt, black polished shoes and a black bowtie materialised and sidled up to the table.
"Ah, there he is. Waiter, I'll have a glass of red wine. I think I'll have the steak as well. Can I have it rare, please? Now, what will you have, Emma?" "A large glass of wine," Emma said in a rude tone. She expected Ingrid to tell her off for speaking so rudely, but to her surprise, Ingrid laughed. "I like a girl with good taste. Red wine is my favourite, too. Waiter, you heard her. That will be two red wines, please? And what are you going to have for lunch, Emma?" "Chips and a burger," Emma said in the same rude tone. "Very well. Chips and a burger for Emma?" Without a word, the waiter took the menus and drifted away towards a white door on the right side of the room, which Emma guessed led to the kitchen.
Emma was puzzled. She had expected Ingrid to tell her off for her rudeness or to refuse to serve her wine because she was underage. Ingrid seemed to read her mind and smiled at her, "I've met worse girls than you before, Emma. I feel that we shall be good friends in good time. Besides, I hear that red wine is very good for your health." "That won't happen. We'll never be friends." "We'll see." The waiter returned with two large and delicate goblets filled with red wine on a silver tray. Ingrid took one and passed the other one to Emma. "In case you wondered, I'm French and I drink wine quite regularly. I've always found it to be enjoyable. You must tell me what you think. We serve very fine wine here."
Emma was surprised by how big the goblets were and took a large gulp of wine from hers. It was her first time drinking wine and she thought it tasted awful. People had told her that red wine was supposed to be sweet, but her wine tasted bitter and sour. "This tastes like shit." "It's an acquired taste, my dear. You get used to it after a while." Emma glumly took another sip and wished that she had asked for juice instead.
After a few more minutes, the waiter returned with Ingrid's steak and Emma's burger and chips. Emma was pleased to see that the burger and chips were delicious and chomped her way through them while drinking large gulps of wine in-between. Ingrid was the complete opposite and ate her steak in delicate bites after cutting it into triangles with her knife and fork while taking tiny sips of her wine. While the wine was still bitter, Emma was thirsty and thought that drinking the wine was better than nothing. Ingrid said, "So, Emma, now that we're having lunch, why don't we begin the interview. Tell me a bit about yourself and why you're here today?" "I'm here because my mum is a heartless bitch. End of story." "I take it that you don't want to be here, then?"
"No fucking way." Ingrid smiled. "I can see you're not in the mood to talk about yourself, so I might tell you a bit about myself instead before I ask you some more questions." Ingrid talked for a few minutes about her French heritage and the school. Emma barely listened to Ingrid as she chattered on and it wasn't hard for her to look bored because she was bored. Furthermore, she felt exhausted and didn't understand what kind of formal interview this was. She had expected something more formal or some sort of formal questioning process. This wasn't what she'd expected at all. What kind of school conducted an interview in a hotel over lunch and wine?
It was quite odd how tired she was because Emma had felt quite energetic before, but she now felt extremely sleepy. In fact, Emma was finding it hard to stay awake. She found herself yawning several times as Ingrid droned on. After what felt like an eternity. Ingrid said, "Am I boring you, Emma?" Emma struggled to answer. To her surprise, she couldn't seem to think of a response. Her arms and legs felt heavy and stiff. When she spoke, Emma's words were slightly slurred. "Just tired. I don't feel well. I need to go to the bathroom." "It's on your right over there, dear. Do you need me to come with you?" Emma tried to stand up and found it took several tries to stand and even then, she had to hold onto the table. When she turned her head to look for the bathroom door, everything seemed to spin in slow motion. When she turned back to face Ingrid, she saw a strange, eager look in Ingrid's dark eyes.
That was when she realised what had happened. The meal and drinks had been drugged. There had been something in the wine. That was why it had tasted bitter. Whatever it was, the drug had probably been put in the food as well. She let go of the table, staggered a couple of steps forward and nearly fell over. Fortunately, she caught the edge of another table with her right hand, but her legs wobbled dangerously as she tried to steady herself.
Ingrid stood up and moved over to Emma to take hold of her left arm. "I think that you do need some help, dear." "You drugged me." "I'm afraid so, yes. You see, this is no interview. You were already accepted to the school. Our girls find the idea of going to school...difficult. This makes it easier for them and for us." "Get away from me!" "That's not possible, dear. Your mother signed our discipline contract today, which makes you our student now and our responsibility." Emma wrenched her arm away from Ingrid, let go of the table and tried to run forward.
It was hopeless. The drugs had taken full effect. Instead, she stumbled awkwardly before tripping and landing facedown on the carpet. Luckily for Emma, the plushness of the carpet cushioned her fall. Emma felt extremely dizzy now, but she somehow managed to lift one arm. By bringing it up under her and pushing upwards, she was able to roll over on her back. When she looked up again, she saw Ingrid's face hovering above her, but it was getting fainter and fainter. When she heard Ingrid's voice again, it sounded as if it were coming from a distance. "Don't fight it, dear. It won't be very long now." Emma felt a hand gently stroking her hair and tried to move so that she could slap it away, but her arms wouldn't cooperate. With a groan, she finally collapsed unconscious on the floor.
When she was sure that Emma was out, Ingrid leaned over Emma and felt her pulse. She was pleased to see that it was steady and normal.
With a sigh, Ingrid sat back down at the table and took the last forkful of her steak off her plate and put It into her mouth, "Delicious as usual." She picked up her own wine glass and finished off her wine with one gulp. It was just then that the waiter reappeared. He didn't blink an eye at the sight of the unconscious Emma on the floor. Ingrid smiled at him.
"I swear that these girls get more and more rebellious every day."
