Fall 1966 - Tragedy - Part I (mm/mf)

Fall 1966

Tragedy

Part I

Will to Win
(mm/mf)

This story isn’t really memorable because of the tie-up incidents that occurred, but what occurred while we were playing it. It was one of the things we regretted doing while playing, and if we were given the chance to do it all over again, we would have done it differently. It would’ve have saved us a lot of trouble. But we were still children, and sometimes, we do stupid things that at that time seemed fine but in retrospect, isn’t really that good of an idea after all. This incident would affect subsequent games and change some of the rules of how we play.

In the last story, Maggie (8), Angela (10), and Betty (8) played a twisted version of Blind’s Man Bluff, with Angela being the one ‘blind’. Aside from doing the actual tying of Angela, Donald (9) and I (9) simply watched and observed the entire proceeding and made sure nothing bad happened to Angela.

During the time before lunch, right after the girls’ tie up games, I kept thinking of a way to win against the formidable combination of Angela, Andrew (10), Donald (9), and David (10). It was hard. Very hard. Andrew, David and Angela were the best TUGgers among us. I wanted to win badly, and I can’t plan properly because Donald was my playmate at that time. I came up empty.

Lunch was interesting. David and Angela ate at our house, in addition to my family. After lunch, Frank (9), my best friend, came over. Andrew and David went exploring in the forest at the hill beyond the plain at our backyard, while Donald, Frank, and I played in our yard. The girls were playing another tea party game in the living room. After that, they went up to Betty’s room.

I initially was unable to formulate with Frank a plan because of the presence of Donald. Don’t get me wrong, Donald was fully part of our little circle—remember, our original team was Frank, Donald and I. And outside of tie-up games, we three were very close—like Andrew and David, Chester and Jay. But that was precisely the problem. Donald was now on the opposite team of Frank and I, and it made planning revenge more difficult. And he couldn’t just go along with it because we knew he wouldn’t betray his team mates. He was loyal to a fault.

This time, I decided, I would just grab Donald and plan with Frank while poor Donald was tied and gagged.

My opportunity came when Donald excused himself to go to the bathroom. While waiting for him to come back, I told Frank that when my cousin comes back, we should ambush him and tie him up.

“Well, it’s not as if we have anything else to do,” I said. “Besides, I think it’s time for us to win a game, don’t you think?”

Frank nodded. “Should we get some rope?” he asked.

“No. It would take too much time, and besides, he might get suspicious,” I replied. Instead, I searched my pockets and found out that I had tucked away a large handkerchief. I took it out and formed a long band with it. “We’ll use this. This isn’t much, but it’ll hold him long enough.”

We hid on each side of the back door. When Donald came out to rejoin us, we quickly grabbed him.

“Hey, what! Let me go!” Donald complained as he was held in a bear hug by Frank.

I showed him the handkerchief, and he knew what was coming.

“Well, you might get me, you won’t get Andrew, and David!” he said.

“Will you give up, or do we have to use force?” Frank demanded.

“I give, I give,” said Donald.

“Good for you,” I said as Frank turned him around and I pulled his hands behind him. “You can still join us, if you want.”

“No way! You’ll lose this game like you’ve lost all the others,” said Donald, sporting a smug smirk.

I tied his hands using the handkerchief, tying it horizontally first, then twisting it so I can tie it vertically, before tightly knotting it. I would’ve preferred rope, but it was just as effective. Or so I thought.

“ANGE—” Donald shouted, or tried to shout, but Frank quickly covered Donald’s mouth with his hand.

We quickly dragged Donald towards my room, Frank’s hand never leaving my cousin’s mouth. When we arrived in my room, I quickly got another handkerchief from my cabinet, wadded it up, and presented it to Donald’s mouth.

Donald opened his mouth, and accepted the wad. Frank finished by covering his lower face with extra pieces of duct tape.

We then forced him to sit on the floor, where I tied his ankles and knees with rope. Satisfied, Frank and I went outside and planned our next move. I carried with me my bag full of supplies.

“We should get Angela,” Frank whispered. “They’re in Betty’s room.”

“Yes, but not yet,” I replied. “Let’s call Chet and Jay to come here, then we attack her.”

“We can take that girl by ourselves. And we should not worry about Betty and Maggie. They always get her tied up, and they’ll help us in tying her up,” Frank argued.

“Yes, but we need them—Chet and Jay—to capture Andrew and David. By the time we finished tying her up, they’ll be here, and we can go to the forest,” I reasoned.

“Well, okay,” said Frank.

We went downstairs and called Chet and Jay. Luckily, they were at home, and they eagerly accepted our invitation to hunt for my brother and his friend.

Our plan to get Angela was simple—we barge in Betty’s room, interrupt whatever they were doing, and tell her that she was our captive.

We entered Betty’s room, and sure enough, Maggie, Betty, and Angela were playing with dolls.

They looked at us, and when they saw me carrying ropes, they knew what was up.

“Angela, we’re kidnapping you. Surrender, or we’ll have to be rough on you!” Frank announced.

Betty suddenly dropped the doll that she was holding and suddenly grabbed Angela.

“Oh you traitors,” Angela said without offering resistance. “Okay, I give up. But is this a regular game, where you try to capture Andrew, David, Donald and me?”

“Yes,” I said.

She laughed. “I’m sure you captured Donald already, but you won’t get your brother and David! And you’ll be captured—again!”

“We’ll see,” I said as I prepared my rope. “Stand over here and put your hands behind your back!”

“Aw! You should’ve struggled!” Maggie whined. “I’d be more fun if we have to hold you down while they tied you up.”

Angela merely stuck her tongue out at Maggie.

Frank laughed while I simply smiled as I wound a long piece of white rope around her crossed wrists, both vertically and horizontally, behind her back. I cinched it and knotted it off, confident that it was inescapable.

“Ooh! Can I gag her?” Betty asked.

“No, let me!” Maggie countered.

“Why don’t you, Betty, put the packing, and Maggie cover it?” I suggested.

Both agreed. Betty went to her cabinet, got a pair of socks, and rolled it into one wad. It was enormous relative to the size of Angela’s mouth, but it will fit.

Angela looked with dismay but simply opened her mouth. Betty giggled as she packed the wadding into her friend’s mouth. In the meantime, I handed Maggie a large bandana.

She folded it into a large bandana into a wide band, and at my direction, she made a knot in its center. She pushed it past her teeth and tightly knotted it behind her head.

“There!” I said. “Let’s get her to my room and tie him with Donald.”

We marched her to my room. I was surprised when I came back and saw no sign of Donald.

Fall 1966

Tragedy

Part II

Where is Donald?
(m+/f), (F/f)

“Where’s Donald?” Frank asked.

“I forgot to lock my room,” I said. “Barney or John probably freed him.”

Angela began chuckling behind her gag which turned into a torrent of laughs.

“So what are you going to do?” asked Betty.

I ran out of my room and called for my younger brothers.

“Have you seen Donald?” I asked Barney and John, who were playing outside.

“Yes,” said Barney. “I was looking for you when I saw Donald tied up in your room. I saw him free himself and he went to the woods on the hill.”

“Wait! He freed himself?” I asked in disbelief.

“Yes. He simply pulled his hands from the handkerchief,” my younger brother explained. “It wasn’t a very good tie-up.”

I cursed myself. I should’ve replaced the long handkerchief with rope.

“Thanks,” I said and went back to living room, where the others went. Angela was seated on the couch, her lower limbs still free but Frank’s eyes were upon her.

“Great!” Frank said upon hearing the news. “Now what?”

At that moment, Chester and Jay arrived. I told them the news.

“Why don’t we chase them?” asked Chester. “We have Angela anyway. We still outnumber them.”

“What about her?” asked Jay. “Will we bring her with us, or will we leave her here?”

I didn’t trust Betty, Maggie, or for that matter, anyone else not in my team not to free her.

“We’ll just bring her with us,” I decided.

Angela began to act up.

“I think it’s too cold, and she’s not dressed for the cold weather,” Frank said.

It was, after all, a cold afternoon, and there was a strong cold wind blowing through our place. It was not as cold as winter, obviously, but it was pretty cold for October. It was sunny in the morning so it was warmer, but the sky was now overcast. We were wearing thick jackets or sweaters inside the house—how much more if we went outside?

“Well, I could lend her one of my jackets, and my tights and scarves,” Betty offered.

Angela continued to act up, so I removed her gag to ask her what’s wrong.

“I brought my jacket over,” said Angela. “Look, if you want to bring me over to the forest tied up, its okay with me, but let me get dressed for the cold first. Let me go home and let me change!”

“Why don’t you just borrow some of my sister’s clothes?” I asked.

“Yeah!” Betty said. “MOM! COULD YOU HELP ME PICK SOME THICK CLOTHES FOR ANGELA TO WEAR TO THE FOREST?” she shouted.

That silenced Angela, because a few seconds later, Mom appeared and we told our problem to her.
Mom was at first reluctant to send Angela out to the forest while tied up, but we were persistent.

“Angela, is it okay with you?” my mother asked.

“Yes, Mrs. Ford. We’ve done it lots of times,” said the redhead.

“Well, be careful,” she said with misgivings, but approved it anyway.

Anyway, Betty, Maggie, Angela—her hands still bound—and Mom went to my sister’s room. I made Angela promise not to run away.

Frank, Chester, Jay, and I waited for them. We talked about how are we going to find them—David, Andrew, and Donald, and what kind of punishment would we inflict on them as soon as they were in our clutches. I myself went to my room and put on a ticker sweatshirt, a scarf, at cap, and a long coat over it. Yes, it was that cold outside. The coat had many pockets to store the ropes that I planned to bring along. I also brought a bag with tape, handkerchiefs, and other materials. The others were wearing similar thick clothes and also carried tie-up materials.

Finally, after fifteen minutes, they came back. Angela was wearing a thick jacket, and her full skirt was longer, its hem reached the lower calves just above the ankle instead of the knee length one she wore inside the house. She was wearing thick black tights, and in place of her Mary Jane shoes and white shocks, she wore thicker sneakers and thicker socks. A scarf was wrapped around her neck, and covered her mouth. She was wearing a hat. It wasn’t the most fashionable wear during that time but functional for playing in the cold windy autumn woods.

She was bound when they came back. I later learned that she was untied when they got up so she can dress properly, but she was tied up again after she was dressed. It was my mother who tied her up because Maggie and Betty still can’t tie decent knots. My mother said that she didn’t want to interfere in our game, so she had to leave Angela the way she found her—tied up, unless Angela didn’t want to play anymore. Betty and Maggie reggaged her the same way she was earlier gagged. The scarf over her mouth was simply to cover the fact that she was gagged.

Betty and Maggie decided that they won’t accompany us in the woods, so they did not change. They apparently decided to play tea party again—they called Louise to join them. Angela was a bit irritated that she’d be left out—but there wasn’t anything she can do about it, bound and gagged as she was.

We quickly went out, and while we were walking towards the woods, the deficiencies of my plan became apparent. One, we spent too much time letting Angela change her clothes—I later learned that Angela deliberately prolonged her changing to give Donald more time to find my brother. There was a very large chance that my cousin has linked up with my brother and that they were now planning their own attack. Second, I wanted to run, but with Angela bound and gagged and wearing a long skirt, we were slowed down, and Angela seemed to delight in walking as slowly as possible. We tried to push her, but she resisted even further, and fearing that we might have an accident if we insisted, we let her walk as slowly as she liked as a result.

It took us another fifteen minutes to reach the base of the forested hill, and the climb up was even slower. Angela climbed as slowly as she dared, and when I complained and I removed her gag so that she can reply, she again mentioned her long skirt as the reason for her slowness, and tied as she was, she cannot risk tripping. I was sceptical. I have seen her run before in the hills wearing longer skirts, but then again, she always pulled her skirt up in front when she does run. It was clear that it was deliberate—we would be considerably slowed down unless we untied her and she could lift her skirt in front and walk up the trail in the hill fast.

I regagged her, and we were irritated by the slow progress we had made. I contemplated leaving her in a small clearing, tie her up to a tree, leave someone to guard her—but then, that would negate our numerical superiority. This is not after all a game where you can capture someone by squirting him or her with a water gun. No, you have to physically capture him, and you must have at least numerical superiority to induce the other side to surrender.

When we reached a small clearing, Angela began to act up again. Her mmpphhss became louder. I looked at her. She looked like she was in distress and its clear she wanted to say something.

I asked Chester to ungag her and ask her what was the matter.

While she was being ungagged, I saw him—Donald, he was alone, and he was unsure of where to go. He hasn’t seen us. I was excited. Maybe we can catch him off guard.

“DONALD! RUN!!!” Angela screamed at the top of her voice as soon as she was ungagged. Chester immediately popped the wadded cloth back into her open screaming mouth, but the damage was done.

I cursed. Angela must have saw him before any of us did and decided to warn her teammate.

Donald turned and saw us. His eyes widened, and immediately run.

Fall 1966 - Tragedy - Part III

Here's part III.

Fall 1966

Tragedy

Part III

Chasing Donald, and the Aftermath
(m+/f)

“Frank, follow me,” I shouted before taking off after my cousin.

I was a better mountaineer and mountain climber than Donald, and I knew this forest better. I looked at where he was headed. If I chase him where he was now, it would take forever to catch him. So I decided to cut him off by taking a shortcut.

I ran using the narrow shortcut. Frank followed, but I gestured to him to directly follow Donald. If we’re lucky, we can trap him between us.

Luckily, the trail where Donald went was covered on the side of the sloping hill with thick foliage about a man’s height, and the path where the shortcut joined it was almost hidden unless one specifically looks for it. I soon reached it, hid in the foliage, and waited, hoping that Donald would pass by. The other side of the trail was a steep incline. There were no trees or foliage on that part, and it was covered with dried leaves and brown grass. There were a couple of large rocks at the bottom.

I heard a few steps. It was Donald. He was tired as he was walking and I can hear his heavy breathing. He kept looking behind him, looking for signs of his would be captors. He never even noticed me.

I suddenly jumped out of the foliage and grabbed him.

I put him in a tight bear hug. “Give up, Donald? Give up!” I expected him to simply surrender, but to our regret, he fought and tried to get away.

“No,” he said as he struggled.

We were almost the same size, so it was very difficult to hold him. “FRANK!” I shouted, calling for my friend to help me subdue Donald. “Frank!”

We were struggling in a very narrow trail, besides a steep incline, which unfortunately, had no fence. Somehow, even though we were both experienced mountaineers, we both slipped during the struggle and we rolled down the incline. Now, I have walked down, even run many times in this same incline, but never rolled down while struggling with another one.

Suddenly, we stopped. We collided with the rocks at the bottom of the incline and I felt a sharp pain in my left arm.

The next moment I barely remembered. Mostly, I reconstructed it by asking the people who were there what happened.

I screamed.

The next few minutes were a blur, as I closed my eyes and shouted for all my worth. “Ah! My arm! My arm!” I shouted so loud that I must have been heard a mile away.

“Is it the left, or the right,” I heard Donald say in panic.

“Left, left,” I cried. The pain was so excruciating that I didn’t even feel myself being put in a sitting position by Donald and I didn’t notice that Frank was besides us.

Soon, Andrew and David, who heard my screams, arrived, and I was helped to my feet. I can still walk, so, with my right arm under my brother’s shoulder, I managed, with their help, to walk back to my home. Although walk might not be the right term. Half dragged might be more appropriate.

My arm was sprained as a result of the accident. It was put on a sling and was told by the doctor that I would have to wear it for a month at most. Otherwise, I was fine. Donald was winded by the fall, but otherwise escaped with only minor scratches on his skin. I broke his fall after all.

Everyone forgot about poor Angela. When the commotion happened, Chester and Jay were confused. When I was walked home, the twins escorted Angela home still bound and gagged, but at home, everyone’s attention was on me. As a result, she was only untied after an hour.

My parents scolded the other kids for playing too rough. They inquired whether I was tied up while I fell. Thankfully, I wasn’t, or they might have banned us from playing any more tie-up games.

My parents gave a strict warning. One more incident like this and they will outright ban us from playing in the woods.

Donald was all apologies to me. He blamed himself for what had happened, but I assured him it wasn’t his fault, that we both were having fun. Still, he was feeling so guilty that several times during the ensuring week, I had to say that I had forgiven him and that I was okay.

My father was furious at Donald, but didn’t say a word in anger to his nephew, my cousin, but he simply told his brother, Uncle Richard, Donald’s father, about it. Donald, I later learned, was thoroughly scolded. Later, my father and uncle calmed down, and they said that we should really be more careful next time. It wasn’t really his fault, and it was a lesson to be more careful next time we played. In fact, I felt that I was partly to blame for the accident because I was the one who chose the place of ambush, which to say the least, was ill advised. At that time, we simply adopted an attitude that no one was really to blame for the accident.

As for the game, who really cared about it? Well, after all the pain was gone and things got back to normal, I saw it as a missed opportunity. I kind of thought, “if I didn’t sprain my arm, we would’ve won.”

Needless to say, I wasn’t tied up for the next few weeks.
