Worried about anonymity?

Postby staythirstymyfriends » Sat Nov 03, 2012 6:01 pm

The to-do with the website that was linked to here and which, apparently, had something illegal on it... there's a way to save yourself stress in such cases.

First, engage in nothing illegal, of course.

Second, if you see something obviously illegal on a board, or for that matter anywhere else, get away from it. If you want to inform someone, I submit the hoster of the site would be the one to contact, and immediately. If it's child abuse, you may be required to report it to someone who can handle the matter. If it's an emergency and obviously so, you should call the cops, but only then. Why? You're their first lead, and they're going to look at you and check you out to some degree... esp if it involves S&M and underage or other such illicit activity. They're going to want to know what you were doing there in the first place, and that's going to lead to questioning for which you'll want a lawyer present.

If you really feel like being the Samaritan and calling the law on a pic or vid that appears to be illegal, you have to make the decision of the risk involved, for you are involving yourself.

Third, get a TOR browser. TOR is a very good anonymous network run by volunteers who donate computing power so your surfing activities can travel across the Web with almost total stealth. It's not an ISP, but it does mask your normal IP address, and multiple times. It's at www.torproject.org , and runs with a pre-configured version of Firefox. Check it out, and surf here without the healthy paranoia! Be not afraid, just cautious...
Is it any different to be tied up vs being tied down? One of the great things about English, its flexibility :p

Am I the only one who thinks it'd be best for admins and moderators to stamp their foot down on the illegal stuff that goes on, on this website? :P

I mean, come on; there's little to no age restriction here on what content can be published. It's so wrong. :P

This one.

Also, HITPOOANDRUN, there are places for adult/mature content, and there are places for everything else. Just keep in mind when you are reading, what you are reading.

That makes no sense to me in context. The original post implied a different website than the one we're on; a link was mentioned.
Anyway; just curious. I'm not interested in checking out any porn websites; what few I've ever seen were more repulsive to me than titillating.

Good call. I still can't help the feeling that I'm trodding on a very thin line here, with a considerable minority body and all. Especially with pics section - so much I feel real uncomfy browsing it.

Keep up on the moderation - and for the sake of paranoia-filled lawyer souls like me, PLEASE assemble a short synopsis on laws applying here.

Rule of thumb in the US, is that any picture, image, drawing, illustration, video, or other depiction of a child, or someone appearing to be a child under the age of 18, bound nude or in underwear, is, on its face, pornographic. There's a little more leeway if the subject is an adult, but the standard is, does it have "socially redeeming value," and is its sole purpose to "appeal to prurient interests." That decision is left to a judge and/or jury, and judges/juries in different areas of the country, may have different ideas. What might get you a walk in San Francisco, might well get you five years in Dallas.

I believe drawings are not as problematic as photographs (including manips) are, but they can still draw unfavorable attention... as I found out when I got expelled from DeviantArt (I guess my art was TOO deviant for DeviantArt  ).

And stories intepreted on video by adults, it seems. Without mentioning any names, there is a series like that. on YouTube, totally without age restrictions.

Laws are curious.

You bring up a good point PDP. As a roleplayer long before I ever joined Tugs, I would specify my rules for bondage scenarios on Gaia Online via pms so that if those I did them with felt uncomfortable they could tell me and I would stop the scenario. Unlike there, one can download saved pms as messages to their computer but they hold ten times the space as here.

I bring this up because I joined there to become better at rping and ended up discovering bondage rping instead. That lead me to find sites like this and others too. Because of the fact that certain sites have age restrictions and others do not, I took it upon myself to create usernames for those other sites. This enabled me to "fool around" but I always tried to keep from making myself stand out to the admins on those sites. Because of this, I have a rep as a womanizer I brought to Tugs with me and yet as a rule I never involved myself in romantic type rping forums until this year mainly because I have had bad luck with them on other sites in the past.

Same here Chase Ricks. I do not push my ideas to anyone else unless they are clearly willing to participate - and even then, I keep those personas well clear from other net personas of mine..

Unlike other members, I do not actively participate in real life bondage and only do bondage rping here. On rare occasions I have written stories based on my imagination and rping scenarios from my past with the help of other cowriters off of Tugs with two exceptions.

I enjoy this site because I like meeting new rpers and seeing how good they truly are. Do not judge members by what they say in comments but by their rp actions. The more cooperative they are with those running a site even as a member only, the better reaction you will find they have to your thoughts here.

Without giving any specific legal advice, I think there are two primary laws people should be aware of -- laws respecting copyrights and 18 USC Section 2257 and its regulations. These mainly apply when people post pictures of an adult nature. 2257 is the federal recordkeeping statute which is very broad and currently the subject of lawsuits to determine if it is constitutional.

For those using Mozilla Firefox, I don't know how well this works, but when I sign on to the server, I click on the "Tools" drop down menu, which gives me the option to "Start private browsing." It tells me that the computer won't remember sites I've visited.

When I'm done, I again bring up the "Tools" menu and "Stop private browsing." I bring the menu up again, and select "Clear recent history."

After exiting the browser, I bring up the start up menu (click on the Windows logo at the bottom left), and on the right side, select "Control Panel." When the control panel comes up, I choose "Internet Options." What that menu comes up,one of the options will be "Delete Browsing History." Click on that, then on "OK." You'll get a small window showing the progress, and when it is done, click "OK."

Again, how well this works, is anybody's guess, but supposedly, it erases the browsing history, and clears the cache and cookies.
