Mother language

Postby abenial » Sun Sep 21, 2008 2:29 am

Hello,

I was wondering what was your mother language, guys. It could explain many mistakes we can find in the posts

And it could be a good database about the population of this forum, and a good tool for those who are looking for penmates. So, vote, then write your mother language and the country where you live.

(and for those who wonder, I have created this poll according to different factors -first English (it's an English forum !), then Chinese (biggest country), then the other most common languages. Don't want to offense anybody. If your language/country is not in the list above, feel free to tell us what's yours  )

I am a french-speaker. I live in Belgium.

My answer depends on your definition of mother language. The first language I learned was Spanish (what I voted cuz my other option is missing) but the language I understand the best is Hebrew (now guess where I live). Consequently all my English errors are a mix of Hebrew grammar with misspelled Spanish vocabulary.

Well as many may know, my mother tounge is german.

However, a lot of "bad" posts come from native english speakers, too...
I think good knowledge of english (plus a spellchecker in the browser) can avoid many many mistakes...although some speech patterns will surely still mark someone as foreigner ;)

My mother tongue is English, even though, i can speak some italian and french from learning the language, i also have a bit of irish in me..
and agreeing with what others have said, some English people, do make mistakes in their stories. But some of the stories by foreign people, who cannot speak or write in the English language, do a pretty good job at it :D

For me, it depends...I can ignore (or don't even notice) many mistakes. However, some stories are so garbled by mistakes and/or internet slang, they are hardly readable at all.
Alas, IMHO that has gotten better lately

Well, my mother tongue is Dutch and I live in the Netherlands (still).

A few years ago, when I was about 10 or 11, my English was rediculously bad, but as you can see, it has improved over the years.

I also speak a reasonable amount of German. Ich spreche ein großes bisschen Deutsch. =)
And I once had French in school. Je parle un petit peut de Français. (I don't know if it's 'un' or 'une')

It's "un petit peu". But it doesn't matter, you would still have been understood. :D

I speak French in everyday life, as I live in a French-speaking part of Canada. I learned English in school - had English as a second language from grade 4 to grade 12. Also learned Latin (more usefull than you think!) and Spanish in school.

I'm American and I speak English. I know a little bit of Spanish but not enough to really consider myself fluent. I definitely can't understand the Hispanics around here when they speak it.

I write basic standard American English, but be glad you don't have to hear me speak, because I have a pretty good Southern accent and dialect to go with it.
