Homemade Fuzzy Handcuffs

Postby onceuponatime » Thu Aug 26, 2010 10:39 am

Hey everyone, I've been working on a project and wanted to share.

I've been spending a lot of time with my sewing machine lately, and after a couple of trips to hardware and fabric stores I've made my first pair of velcro handcuffs. They are very soft, while still being rigid enough to keep their shape and secure a wrist well. if your in them it is possible with a little contorting to get yourself out. Although I've used a removable chain link in the middle, so you can for example, tie someones hands to bedposts, making them escape proof (as long as hands are tied away from each other I've not found it possible to get out). But if hands and feet are cuffed together and your stretched out and tied down it is next to impossible to move enough to get out.

I have also made a pair of matching ankle cuffs, and after buying four adjustable straps to go around corners of the bed, there's less than a minute or two between wanting to play a TUG and having someone in all the cuffs tightly secured down.

I do have some plans for improvement, I've bought much sturdier D rings, I feel the ones I'm using now will eventually break, and depending on how testing of the next version of the cuffs goes I may take them to a metalworking shop and have them welded so there are no breaks in the ring. I have bought super strong and thick polyester thread, and I've been working on making better stitches with my sewing machine (and different thicker stitching for high strain points), all this will enable me to make some that will be quite indestructible, and last a very long time.

This picture is just of my version 1 handcuffs, I'm starting version 2 in the next few days, and if I can get them up to my standards I'm considering making a third pair to put up on ebay or etsy.com and seeing if there's any interest from anyone that wants a pair (or a pair of handcuffs and ankle cuffs).

I'd love to know what you all think, if you have any questions I would be happy to answer, I could also post some other pictures of my handcuffs or ankle cuffs if there is interest.

sevegas wrote:looking at that picture, your cuffs appear to be very well made, and most importantly .....SUCURE !!!! Maybe you could somehow include way to add a small padlock that would lock the cuffs to the captive's wrists.

But as it stands now, I think you've really got something there :big:

Thanks for the kind words.

I've been thinking of ways to have them lock, but I haven't come up with a solution I'm happy with yet. In the meantime I've started working on my second pair, in the picture below you can see much thicker D rings, the old ones I could bend with my hands, but these ones seem like they will hold their shape (and their captive) no problem. I've also been adjusting all my measurements. I even bought red thread so the stitching wont show through the red strap, it's also much stronger than the old cotton thread I was using.

The picture shows most everything cut out and ready to be sewn. Everything but the fake fur is cut and ready to go. The brown stuff is some webbing I found at a craft store to make the cuffs more rigid (not floppy). I've also heard that you can buy rabbit pelts from taxidermists for a few bucks, I have some things I'll be thinking about for the future. But in the meantime I will finish my new handcuffs today, maybe even a new pair of ankle cuffs. And my girlfriend has said she is eager to test them out on me. :)

congratulations, if I were you, I would do velcro, or maybe some sort of pad locking system

You're thinking what I was thinking (great minds think alike, right?). The picture below is of the velcro I have just sewn to the strapping that secure the cuffs. I am interested in a locking mechanism, but I haven't figured out any way to achieve that while still maintaining adjustment for different wrist sizes. Let me know if you have any ideas to share.

I'm much more proud of these so far than the first pair, my stitching is getting much better, and I've finally found a good thread tension and whatnot. I still need to deal with the ends of the threads but I think these are coming along quite nicely.

If you go the velcro route I definitely recommend making sure you get the kind without adhesive on the back, that made my first pair of handcuffs a pretty bad sewing experience. The non adhesive kind for sewing was a breeze.

And here's a picture of my finished product. I'm getting much faster at this. They probably don't look that much different in the picture, but the stitching is much much better, and everything is much sturdier, I'm sure these will last a long time, and I think they look really good.

Next on my list is a matching pair of ankle cuffs, and my girlfriend requested a blindfold that I couldn't shake off (I'm going to see what I can come up with using the left over materials). And I still need to find the time to play with these toys. :quirk:
