The Necessities - Part 1

There is one fact of life that all parents know. Some choose to keep it to themselves, some choose to tell their kids and others, like Chelsey’s mom and dad, do something about it.

On November 24 the family sat down to Sunday supper and Chelsey found an envelope on her plate. Inside was a Christmas card and inside the card was a folded piece of paper. Chelsey opened it up to find a hand written gift certificate that said;

“Good for one trip to anywhere you want to go on the Christmas break.”

Mom explained that most kids never get to see the world. They graduate from school and soon they have car loans, student loans to repay and rent. They work to survive and rarely have the money to travel. Mom and dad wanted Chelsey to get the chance to go somewhere that she had always wanted to and they were offering to pay as their Christmas gift to her.

Chelsey immediately started to research destinations and tour packages and in her browsing she came across a Canadian company called Wild Woman Expeditions, WWE for short. She liked the name and read further. She found out that they were a company run by women for women exclusively. They offered many tours all over the world but one in particular appealed to Chelsey.

As a person who likes to push herself to her limits Chelsey was keen on a package they offered called The Extreme Winter Challenge. It was a week of outdoor winter activities that would test her strength and stamina. WWE operated several locations across Canada and this outing was offered at their site near Sudbury, a remote city in Northern Ontario.

Chelsey did some more research and found that Sudbury was one of the snowiest places in Canada and that during the Christmas break the temperatures often plunged to -20F at night and didn’t get much above 0F during the day. The activities themselves were strenuous but would be even more so when dressed to cope with weather like that.

WWE.jpg

The description of the week’s agenda was intimidating at first but the more she looked at it the ore she wanted to try it as a test of her abilities and strength. Chelsey at 20 years old had many years of athletic success but never had she tried any sort of endurance sports and this seemed to be a good place to start.

After discussing it with mom and dad she got their blessing and then she contacted WWE. She made a reservation and WWE emailed her a list of the necessities that she would need to bring. It wasn’t very much but it was very specific. Each item had to meet the requirements exactly and they assured her that upon arriving her gear would be inspected.

For the next few days Chelsey ran around town to various outfitters looking for things such as thermal underwear, a down filled parka, snow pants and winter boots. Most of it was not available in stock and had to be ordered but by the time she was ready to leave she had it all. When the time came she took a flight to Toronto and then transferred to a smaller plane to go to Sudbury.

Sudbury_Airport.jpg

The Sudbury Airport was in the middle of nowhere miles outside of the city but by chance it was only a half hour drive by taxi to the gathering point, a clearing in the woods down a single lane side road, where the participants were to meet. Chelsey was the first to arrive and the cab driver courteously waited with her until someone else showed up. Within half an hour six other women had been dropped off and were waiting.

Before too much conversation could take place a big red pick-up truck pulled into the lot and two women got out. The small grey haired one identified herself as Leslie, the operator of the tour, and she introduced the taller dark haired woman as Marilyn, her assistant.

As promised the two women did a quick inspection of everyone’s gear and were satisfied that the participants had what they needed. ‘We may seem fussy about your stuff’ said Leslie ‘but you need to have the necessities to survive and anything less will reduce your chances of making it to the end.’

Marilyn dropped the tailgate of the truck and started to haul out pairs of snowshoes. After a quick lesson in how to put them on and how to walk properly with them the group picked up their packs and set out for the compound.

Each woman had to carry what she had brought on a two hour walk in snow that was three feet deep. Even with snowshoes it was an effort and Chelsey soon understood why you didn’t bring anything more than what you needed, just the “necessities” Leslie had said.

Eventually the group were at the top of a small hill overlooking the compound. It was almost exactly as Chelsey remembered from her research. In the center was a large building that had the dining area on one side, sleeping accommodations for twenty on the other and in the middle was the kitchen. To the right of the main building were a few sheds for the storage of equipment and a parking lot in which the red truck was parked.

The women all groaned when they saw the truck and knew that they could have driven all the way in rather than walking. They realized that this hike had been their first challenge. Off to the left side was a long narrow building with a fenced compound that Chelsey didn’t recognize from the map she had studied. The sound of dogs barking rang through the clear cold air.

‘Well I suppose that sound ruins the surprise’ said Leslie ‘there is a small change in the itinerary that we didn’t tell you about. In addition to all of the other activities we have planned for you there will be a day of dog sledding.’

Tour 1.JPG

A shiver ran through Chelsey. She had always had a weird relationship with dogs. As a person who loves cats she knew that the tension between cats and dogs was greatly exaggerated and they often get along fine. It was her own experience that made her uneasy because it seemed that whenever she was around dogs they always behaved strangely.

As the group trudged down the hill the barking increased and the dogs could be seen lined up along the fence studying the group. ‘You girls are getting quite the welcome from our furry friends’ said Leslie ‘they are usually excited to see us but today for some reason they are more vocal than usual.’ She laughed as she added ‘You would almost think they had seen a cat!’

***
They took off their snowshoes and entered the main building. There were benches to sit on and remove their boots and long steel spikes pounded into the walls of the log building to hang coats and hats on. A warm welcoming fire was roaring in the huge fireplace and on either side were racks where mitts and scarfs could be put to dry out.

Marilyn told them to put their packs in the corridor to the bedrooms, sleeping accommodations would be sorted out later but first it was time for lunch. Steaming bowls of chicken noodle soup were accompanied by loaves of fresh baked bread, raw vegetables and thick slices of cheese. Leslie explained as they ate that each item had the high calorie content that was necessary to keep a body warm in cold conditions and encouraged everyone to ‘put a lot of butter on your bread, no one will get fat here this week.’

After lunch they were back outside and shown how to maintain the snowshoes before putting them away. Then they had a lesson in how to set up and drive a dog sled. Marilyn brought a sled out of one of the sheds and Leslie disappeared into another. The roar of a motor startled the women.

Leslie appeared driving a big four wheeler ATV. She shut it off in front of them and explained ‘We are going to get used to the sleds by pulling them with this first before we try it with dogs. They are very clever and if they sense that you don’t have firm control they will take off on you.’

Marilyn and Leslie showed them how to attach the dogs to the traces, how stand on the sled and how to apply the brakes but most important was that at all times they had to let the dogs know who was in charge. They was to be no begging, bargaining or negotiating as people did with their pets. These animals had to be verbally bullied and physically intimidated to keep them in line.

Sled-Dogs.jpg

The rest of the afternoon was spent riding the sled behind the ATV getting a feel for how it slid and swayed. Each woman took a turn as a passenger and a driver. Even when you were a rider it was important to know how to lean to assist the driver in turning without tipping.

This far north it gets dark before 6PM and they were back in the lodge shortly after six warming up by the fire. They had been pampered at lunch by Marilyn but the pampering was over. They all crowded into the kitchen and prepared spaghetti and meatballs, broccoli salad and garlic bread for supper.

After the supper time cleanup there was finally time for the women to be social and get to know their fellow adventurers. As it turned out Chelsey was the only traveler, all of the others were local women. They took turns introducing themselves over mugs of hot cocoa and bowls of popcorn made in a cast iron kettle on the fire.

The Necessities - Part 2

Postby LordNelson » Mon Apr 25, 2016 4:13 pm

It was during the introductions that Chelsey realized that she had completely missed something during her research. The term “exclusively women” meant “mostly lesbians”. It didn’t bother her as she was one herself but it did make her feel foolish that she hadn’t picked up on it sooner.

Leslie is a former nurse who was married and has two kids but when her son’s wife announced she was now gay and left him Leslie thought it was a good idea and so she retired from her job and did the same to her husband. She loves the outdoors and after years of being a client she took over the WWE business. She wore a loose fitting plaid shirt and army surplus fatigues.

Marilyn was married to Leslie’s brother Tom and when Leslie admitted that she preferred women Marilyn admitted that she preferred Leslie and they have been together ten years now. Marilyn is almost six feet tall with square shoulders and a slightly masculine face. In spite of first impressions she is rather good looking in large sort of way. She dressed in a manner that was slightly out of place with a pair of black slacks and a pink blouse, not the sort of clothes you would normally see in a place like this.

Jennifer is a thirty year old veterinarian with a pretty face, long gorgeous red hair and a full figure that she liked to show off with a snug red sweater, a plunging neckline and tight black yoga pants. She has a big laugh and a huge smile. She stated that she currently had no romantic ties.

Elizabeth declined to give her age (probably late fifties thought Chelsey) but told them she was married with two grown children. With a wicked smile she disclosed that her marriage was “a loose arrangement” and that the gender of her extra-marital partners was not important as long as they were fun. She is a full figured woman with an attractive face, short brown hair and freckles. She wasn’t shy to walk around in her underwear and had grey “long johns” on with a grey long sleeved undershirt.

Carole said she is “almost sixty”. She owns a ranch, loves horses, has two daughters and is “still married but open to new experiences”. She has intense pale blue eyes, a slightly crooked smile and a tiny nose. Clearly she had been quite pretty when she was younger but in addition to her age a number of health problems have left her looking tired and a little fragile. Her cowboy style shirt and faded jeans had a rural look to them.

Claire introduced herself as a school teacher who never found the time to get married because during the day she was devoted to her pupils and at night she was devoted to having affairs with their parents, both moms and dads. She is in her mid-thirties with curly black hair, a nice body and what Chelsey considered to be perfectly shaped breasts. She wore a dark green turtle neck pullover that snugly hugged her amazing boobs and black leggings with thick black wool socks.

Angela is a fiftyish woman with dye-job blond hair, too much make-up and too tight clothes. Her sagging breasts, thick waist and lumpy bum showed that she was past her prime but she had once been an attractive woman. She admitted that she was mainly at the resort to observe their business practices because she owned a resort also and wanted to branch out into specialty tours such as this one. She wore a t-shirt with the logo of her lodge on it that was at least one size too small and a pair of loose fitting red and blue plaid pajama bottoms.

Julie is a tiny woman, barely five feet tall, with small breasts and a cute bum. She is a truck driver with three boys who recently tossed her husband out when she realized what an asshole he was. She said that she had signed up just to get some time away from “all the males in her life”. Her long reddish-brown hair went well past her shoulders. Her tight blue jeans and even tighter black t-shirt showed a body that was tough from hard work but still quite attractive.

Chelsey went last and introduced herself as a student, an athlete and a lesbian. She was the only one to openly use the “L” word and some of the others looked pleased while a few looked uncomfortable.

The remainder of the evening was spent chatting and getting to know each other. Chelsey found that she was a victim of the age gap and didn’t have much in common with the others. The closest one to her age was Jennifer who had no interest in sports and preferred to talk about herself. Everyone was tired and soon the gathering began to break up. Chelsey noticed that the women were leaving the room in pairs and heading down the corridor to the bed rooms.

***

The first couple to go was quite a contrast in bodies with tiny Julie looking like a child beside the full figured Jennifer, the only thing they seemed to have in common was beautiful long hair. The serious Carol paired with fun loving Elizabeth which was an attraction of opposites. Angela and Claire also seemed an unlikely couple but were acting like teenagers on a first date when they went hand in hand to their bedroom.

They were picking up their packs that they had left in the hallway earlier and closing the doors behind them as they chose a bedroom for the night. Soon Chelsey was left with only Leslie and Marilyn, she couldn’t believe how quickly the women had paired off.

‘Sorry you were left out’ said an apologetic Marilyn ‘that’s what happens when we have an odd number. If it’s any consolation I think that you were only left out because you are too young and too sexy and they feel a little intimidated by you. Don’t worry, once they get to know each other better a lot of switching goes on, someone will become available if you’re interested.’

With that she took Leslie by the hand and they too retired for the evening leaving Chelsey by herself in front of the fading fire. She threw a few more logs on to make it last the night, it was the main source of heat in the building and then found an empty bedroom for herself.

***

In the morning the smell of bacon woke Chelsey up and she crawled out of bed. The comment that she was “too young and too sexy” was still on her mind and she decided to make the most of it as she went for breakfast in a lime green sports bra, black yoga pants and a pair of thick red wool socks.

As she expected all eyes were on her when she walked into the kitchen to help prepare the food. She ignored the attention and took over the task of making toast from Marilyn who gave her a wink and whispered “way to go girl” as she stepped aside and gave Chelsey’s bum a squeeze.

Soon the dining table was loaded with platters of scrambled eggs, greasy bacon, fried potatoes, toast and jugs of freshly squeezed orange juice. Chelsey had been busy being an observer and saw that some of the pairings had worked and some hadn’t. There was going to be a shuffle tonight but she was fairly certain that she would be alone again, this time by choice.

***

It was a cold clear morning and the group gathered at the front entrance to put on their hats, coats and boots. Over breakfast Leslie had given them the itinerary for the day. They would take the dog sleds out on a trek through the woods to a remote cabin three hours away, have lunch and then return.

Tour 2.JPG

As the women left the building Chelsey had a shiver go through her again. Five people exited the building before her but the dogs didn’t start barking until she stepped out…it was as if they could sense her.

Marilyn already had two teams out and tied to stakes ready to be harnessed to the sleds. Leslie and Carol who had some experience with dogs brought out the remainder. Soon all 24 dogs were arranged in four teams of six and they were impatiently pacing, growling and barking.

‘Don’t be deceived’ said Leslie ‘they may look like a disorganized mob but that’s because they can’t wait to get going. It’s going to be hell to get them into teams but once we let them lose you will see poetry in motion.’

Chelsey’s partner was Carol, she had paired up with Elizabeth the night before but the two didn’t seem to be on speaking terms today. Chelsey soon found out why. Carol’s smile hid a no-nonsense approach and she was very demanding and not very friendly. The two soon had the traces laid out and Carol brought over the first dog.

Hitching the dogs starts with the “wheel dogs” closest to the sled. They are the calmest dogs and don’t get spooked by the noises the sled makes.

Brutus, a large mastiff with wide shoulders and an enormous head, was curled up in the snow and refused to stand up when Carol took hold of his tether. In a split second she had him by the collar and his back paws barely touched the ground as she hauled him to him to his position. Raised on a farm she put up with no nonsense from animals, they had a job to do and that was that.

The attachment Growl.jpg is no longer available

Chelsey went to get the next wheel dog, Peach’s, who appeared to be a mild mannered Husky. As soon as Chelsey touched her tether teeth were bared and a low warning growl came from deep inside of her. Chelsey tried Carols approach and reached for the collar but barely pulled her hand away in time from being nipped.

Before Chelsey could get more aggressive Carol came over and grabbed Peach’s giving her hind end a swat before dragging her away. ‘She doesn’t seem to like you’ said Carol in a sarcastic tone. You get the next one.’

The scene repeated itself again and again as each dog was openly hostile towards Chelsey and each time Carol had to intervene. Soon only the main lead dog, Loki, was left and the sled had to be loaded before he could be attached.

The Necessities - Part 3

Postby LordNelson » Mon Apr 25, 2016 4:16 pm

‘It’s time to get the baggage on the sled’ said Carol ‘grab our packs.’ Chelsey took their packs and put them onto the back of the sled against the slats of the handlebar. Along the side rails of the sled half a dozen leather straps dangled and Chelsey chose the two nearest the driver’s handlebar and tied them to the packs. The trail could get bumpy and if they bounced out going back for them was a real nuisance, dog sleds don’t have reverse.

‘I’m going to have to get Loki’ said Carol rudely ‘so you may as well get in now.’ Chelsey didn’t like her tone but decided it was too early in the day for a confrontation, she would tell her later what she thought of her attitude. She sat down, put her back against the packs and snuggled in between the side rails.

Carol was standing to one side of the sled and reached over across Chelsey to the other side. She began to fuss with one of the straps that was there and then took hold of Chelsey’s arm by the sleeve. Before Chelsey knew it her arm was tightly bound at the wrist to the top rail.

‘What the hell are you doing?’ Chelsey demanded to know. ‘You haven’t been much use so far’ said Carol with a snarl as she tied the other wrist to the railing ‘you’re not much more than baggage so I’m making sure you don’t fall out along the way. If it was up to me I’d leave you behind but I’m sure Leslie would make me go back for you.’

Carol may have looked delicate but she was incredibly powerful, she easily held Chelsey’s arm still with one hand while tying it with the other. After years of hard work on the ranch she was a lot stronger than she appeared to be.

‘You can’t do this to me’ protested Chelsey. ‘I just did’ replied Carol as she stuffed her mitt into Chelsey’s mouth. She pushed it in as far as it would go and then pulled Chelsey’s scarf up over it to cover it. She took hold of the knot in the scarf and pulled it tight and then knotted it again to make sure it wouldn’t loosen up.

Chelsey struggled against the straps and began to rock the sled. Carol tied another strap around her ankles and warned her ‘Sit still, you don’t want to spook the dogs.’ Chelsey was confused about what she should do next, does she continue to struggle hoping to get someone’s attention or sit still and hope that Carol will release her after making her point.

Just then Leslie looked over and noticed what was happening between Chelsey and Carol. Carol walked over to Leslie and they had a brief discussion. Leslie walked over, took a closer look at Chelsey and then turned to Carol and said with a giggle ‘Looks like you’ve got some extra baggage there, what’s the problem?’

‘It seems like the dogs don’t like her for some reason’ answered Carol ‘I figure if she’s not going to be useful I may as well tie her down and keep her out of my way.’

‘Well it is only for three hours’ said Leslie with a crooked smile ‘after lunch it’s her turn and you’ll have to let her loose to drive back.’

‘We’ll see’ said Carol as she took her spare mitts out of her pack and put the mate of the one in Chelsey’s mouth away ‘that’s still debatable, it depends on how I feel about her after lunch.’

Chelsey couldn’t believe what she was hearing, the leader of the group was okay with what was happening. It seems there was even a word for it, she was called “baggage”. She knew now it was useless to struggle, she was bound too tight to get free and no one else was going to help.

***

Each of the sleds was at the point where it was time to attach the lead dog and get going. Julie was on the sled standing on the brakes and Jennifer was getting Poppy, Leslie who was now with Elizabeth was standing on the brake of the sled while Elizabeth held onto Hammer and lastly Angela was holding back their sled while Claire got ready to position Cookie.

Musher line toon.png

It was then that Chelsey remembered that attaching the lead dogs was a two person job. The team would want to go once they had a leader and someone had to stand on the brakes while the other handled the dog…with Chelsey tied up Carol was by herself.

On the narrow trails there was only room for one sled at a time so Leslie’s sled left first. Elizabeth snapped Angel into her harness and then sat down as quickly as possible in the sled. It was already inching forward even though Leslie was standing on the brake with both feet. When Elizabeth was seated Leslie stepped off of the brake and onto the foot boards.

As soon as the team sensed that there was nothing holding them back they raced off down the trail. The other two teams followed shortly behind, Chelsey and Carol were to be the last to go. Carol snapped the carabineer of Loki’s collar to the neckline and then attached the tug line to his harness.

Chelsey was in a panic. With no one standing on the brake the dogs would bolt to follow the others as soon as Carol released her grip on Loki. Last night Leslie had told a story about how a runaway team had gone for hours not even slowing down when the sled had turned upside down. Fortunately no one had been on board that time but Chelsey didn’t want to be the first to have her head dragged through the snow.

Carol pushed down on Loki’s haunches until he was sitting. She kneeled down and looked him in the eye and said ‘Stay!’ Sled dogs have three words in their vocabulary. Gee which means turn right, haw which is turn left and hike which means run like hell. There are a few other words that drivers use, mostly profane, and rarely do the dogs pay any attention to them. Stay is not a word they ever hear.

Chelsey braced herself for the explosion that never came. Carol stood and calmly walked to the rear of the sled. Six pairs of bright canine eyes followed her with curiosity, not a single paw moved. As Carol got onto the sled the curious eyes shifted to Chelsey. They suddenly got cold and scary. Chelsey could see the dogs tense up and their backs began to arch as their ears flattened out.

Loki.jpg

More terrifying than the possibility of a runaway sled was the thought of being attacked by six dogs while tied up and helpless. Even a woman as tough as Carol could not fight off six dogs and that was if she even chose to help. Quivering lips began to curl and pointed teeth began to show and Chelsey began to shake with fear and then a single word…”Hike”…was shouted by Carol.

Loki bolted and when the gang line went tight the other dogs turned and followed. The sled shot forward with a jolt and in only seconds it was across the compound and into the woods. Trees blurred by inches away on both sides. Even though she was bound Chelsey still had a job to do as the team raced along the winding trail.

On each bend she had to lean as much as she could to the inside of the curve to keep the sled from turning over. Carol was supposed to gently apply the brake to slow them when they turned but her feet never left the foot boards as she let the dogs run free.

Unknown to Chelsey was the fact that Carol and a few others had made a bet last night as to who would get to the cabin first. It was not supposed to be a race but the competitive spirit of some of the women could not be denied. Carol, Leslie, Angela and Julie had all volunteered to be the morning “mushers” and each one wanted to be out front.

***

Carol was being reckless in an attempt to catch up. Leaving last left her at a disadvantage but she was certain she could make up the distance. The sled lurched from side to side tossing Chelsey around. Several times it began to tip lifting one runner from the ground and it took both Chelsey and Carol leaning as far as they could to get it back down.

Chelsey was feeling equal parts of excitement and terror. Hitting a tree or flipping the sled would be disastrous for her but at the same time the feel of the sled vibrating on the frozen trail and the hissing sound of the runners cutting through the snow was a thrill. Carol was a good driver and for the most part the sled was under control letting Chelsey sit back to enjoy the ride.

The attachment Dogs.jpg is no longer available

The bright morning sun flashed like a strobe light through the shady canopy of the towering pine trees. A fine cloud of ice particles flying up from the paws of the dogs glittered like fairy dust in the sunlight. Then an explosion of light blinded Chelsey for a moment as the sled burst out of the dark woods onto an ice-covered lake.

Strong winds had swept the snow from the frozen surface of the lake leaving an icy sheet and the dogs skittered for a second as their feet lost traction. The sled wobbled and swayed but Carol applied the brake which pulled the gang line tight and straightened the sled and the dogs. Once they were moving straight again towards the others she lifted her foot off of the brake and let the dogs run free once more.

The other drivers, even Leslie, were cautiously riding the brake to maintain tension on the gang line and keep the sled and team aligned. What Carol was doing was dangerous…if even one dog slipped the ensuing tangle would happen too quickly to prevent…but her strategy was working. They caught and passed Jennifer’s sled and then Angela’s.

They had just about reached Leslie when the trees loomed up in front of them and they were almost at the end of the lake. Chelsey had a tense moment when the team roared towards a seemingly solid wall of trees, she could see no gap for a trail. Then Leslie’s sled disappeared into a hidden opening into the black forest and seconds later Chelsey and Carol followed.

Actually it was Loki that followed. He had run this trail many times and knew just where to go. Chelsey would have been amused to have known that Carol was also about to panic when she couldn’t see an opening. She did the only thing she could do and made no attempt to steer hoping that the dogs knew where to go and wouldn’t run blindly into a tree.

The Necessities - Part 4 - Conclusion

Postby LordNelson » Mon Apr 25, 2016 4:18 pm

There were two more lakes that allowed a possibility for Carol and Chelsey to get ahead but Leslie was a very experienced driver and she pushed her team to hold the lead. When they arrived at the cabin there was only a matter of seconds between the two sleds.

The attachment Cabin.jpg is no longer available

The ride had been so exciting that Chelsey had almost forgotten that she was bound and gagged. Carol had wisely tied her in such a way that she was able to make the same contribution to the run that she would have had she been free.

Carol parked the sled off to the side leaving room for the two sleds that had yet to arrive. She untied the packs and took them into the cabin leaving Chelsey tied up. Julie pulled in followed shortly by Angela and the crew began to unload their sleds.

‘What do we need?’ shouted Leslie. ‘Necessities’ responded the women. They had heard the word so many times now it was like a mantra to live by. ‘And what would those be?’ asked Leslie loudly. “Food” answered Elizabeth, “warmth” said Angela, “I really need to piss” said Julie which cracked everyone up.

‘The outhouse is behind the cabin’ directed Leslie ‘everyone else let’s get in and start the fire.’

Carol had parked in such a way that no one else could see that Chelsey was still in the sled but Chelsey knew that it would only be a short matter of time before someone would notice that she was missing. She was angry that Carol hadn’t untied her yet.

The noise of unpacking began to quiet down as the women gradually went into the cabin. Soon it was quiet and Chelsey sat all alone as a light snow fall began. The big flakes tickled her nose and she wanted to stick her tongue out to catch one but the foul tasting leather mitt in her mouth crushed that idea.

A crunching of footsteps in the snow came towards her as Carol returned. Without a word she untied Chelsey’s wrists from the rails and then surprisingly crossed them in front of her and used one of the tethers to tie them again. She untied Chelsey’s ankles and used the wrist tether like a leash to pull her to her feet and lead her to the cabin.

The attachment Fed.jpg is no longer available

As they walked along the dogs all looked up from their bowls of water and food to watch them pass by. Each one looked like it would rather be chewing on Chelsey for lunch.

Inside the cabin the smell of wood smoke was in the air as Jennifer was lighting the fireplace and Leslie was firing up the cook stove. Marilyn had been there earlier with the truck and left firewood and food for them. Carol led Chelsey in like a dog on a leash and the others glanced at her and then went back to what they were doing.

Chelsey was shocked that they would let Carol do this to her and doubly shocked that no one said or did anything about it. Their coats were all hanging from steel spikes driven into the log walls and Carol tied Chelsey’s hands up over her head to one of them. She left her there and went to help unpack the food.

Chelsey watched helplessly as a large pot of chili and another of water were put onto the stove to warm up. Each women had a job and was busy. Chelsey felt terrible that not only was she being abused like this but also that she wasn’t participating in the activities. Right from the start she hated Carol but now she was beginning to feel the same way about the others.

Stove.jpg

Once the fires were going and the delicious aroma of the chili and bread baking was replacing the acrid smell of burning wood Carol came over to Chelsey. She whispered into her ear as she untied her;

‘I told everyone that you are a bondage fanatic and that you wanted me to do this to you. That’s why none of them has lifted a finger to help you. Don’t say anything that would make me look like a liar or the rest of your week will be hell.’

So that’s why Leslie hadn’t intervened earlier, Carol had lied to her. Chelsey couldn’t believe that after all she had been through she was now being threatened to go along with it. She decided not to make a fuss right now but there was no way she was going to let this slide by, she would get her revenge when the time was right.

She hung up her coat, untied the scarf gag and pulled the soggy mitten from her mouth. When she walked over to join the others they were all smiles and happy for her that Carol had supposedly helped her to live out one of her bondage fantasies. Leslie handed her a ladle and told her serving the hot drinks would be her job.

Chelsey took the heavy ceramic mugs out of the supplies crate and lined them up along the back of the wood stove to get the chill off of them. Containers of hot chocolate, tea and instant coffee were next and once the water began to boil Chelsey filled up steaming mugs and served everyone, even Carol.

***

After lunch they tidied up the cabin and packed away the dirty bowls and mugs in the crate for Marilyn to pick up later. If Marilyn had been there now Chelsey would have been tempted to catch a ride back with her and be packed and out by the time the others returned. Their conduct wasn’t at fault, Carol had misled them, but Chelsey was still furious.

As they began to file out to repack the sleds and get the dogs sorted out Carol came over and asked Chelsey to use the last of the hot water to put out the fires. Chelsey tossed a few bowls of water into the wood stove to douse the glowing embers and then dumped the rest into the fireplace which had pretty much burnt itself out by now anyways.

She put the pot into the crate, closed it up and turned to see Carol waiting for her…they were the only two left in the cabin…Carol had planned it that way. Chelsey ignored her and put on her coat and hat. Carol moved quickly and grabbed Chelsey by the coat sleeves. Holding them together in front of Chelsey she began to wrap the tether around her wrists again.

‘What the hell are you doing you bitch’ she protested ‘it’s my turn to drive, I should be tying you up.’

‘Under different circumstances I would enjoy that’ said Carol ‘but you’re not ruining my day any more than you already have, I’m driving back and we’re going to be first this time.’

Using a technique she had learned playing basketball Chelsey spun around with her back to Carol and used a “boxing out” move to slam her against the wall. It was a good tactic and in a basketball game players will push back but Chelsey didn’t expect what was to happen next. Carol kicked her feet out from under her and Chelsey buckled to her knees on the floor and then found herself face down with Carol sitting on her back.

The crazy woman was just too strong for her and Chelsey’s arms were twisted up behind her back and bound. ‘There’s no way you’re riding with me unless you’re tied up’ barked Carol.

‘Then she can ride with me’ said a voice from the door. They looked up to see Julie standing there. She was tiny but Carol knew better than to tangle with her. ‘I thought there was something strange going on and now I can see what it is’ said Julie ‘Chelsey’s not the one into bondage, you are you freak. Get the hell out of here, you can go with Jennifer.’

Carol stormed out leaving Chelsey on the floor. Julie came over and untied her. ‘I should have been more suspicious earlier, we all should have, and it just didn’t make sense what you two were doing.’

‘Thanks’ said Chelsey as she stood up ‘that woman is a nutcase.’

They walked out of the cabin and the other teams were pulling away, Carol was seated, Jennifer wouldn’t be bullied into letting her drive. As they approached their team the dogs stood and glared at Chelsey. There was an electricity of primitive rage in the air as they regarded her like a piece of meat to be torn to shreds and eaten.

Another shiver of disappointment went through Chelsey as she knew these animals would never follow her commands. Then a second shiver built up…a shiver of anger. Chelsey took several confident strides towards them and screamed. She screamed long and loud and when she was done every dog had backed off a step or two and was cowering with its tail between its legs. Heads were lowered in submission and there was no more eye contact.

‘Wow’ exclaimed Julie ‘where did that come from?’

‘I’m not sure’ said Chelsey ‘I just looked at them and saw six mad dogs…six Carols…and out it came.’

Chelsey held the brake while Julie sat down and then released it gradually letting the shaken team start out slowly. ‘No racing okay’ Julie said. ‘No racing, I promise’ answered Chelsey.

As they slid leisurely along the trail Julie raised her voice over the swishing of the runners against the icy ground, ‘I was just thinking, are you really into bondage?’ she asked.

‘I am’ answered Chelsey ‘but not like that and certainly not with a crazy woman like her.’

Chelsey couldn’t see Julie’s face but if she had she would have seen a pleased smile.

Back at base camp everyone was already busy putting away the sleds and dogs when Chelsey and Julie arrived about fifteen minutes behind. Chelsey was enjoying the respect she was now getting from the dogs and she unharnessed her team and took them to the kennel. When she entered the other dogs regarded her with ominous stares.

Chelsey stared back and then growled at them. They looked confused and uncertain and then she growled again. Some skulked away while others came over and rubbed against her legs finally accepting her.

By the time all the gear was stowed away it was time to eat and every one was famished. Chelsey joined the others in the lodge and no mention was made of the incident between her and Carol. Several of the women, and in particular Julie, had made it clear to Carol that she was to keep her distance from Chelsey for the rest of the week.

Marilyn had prepared a Hungarian goulash that filled the lodge with the smell of paprika. Bowls were soon filled with steaming mounds of vegetables and chunks of beef. Stories about the day’s adventures were shared by all, except Carol, who had retreated to eat in her room. Even Chelsey had a few things to say about her afternoon with Julie but no mention was made of the morning.

Hungarian desserts followed the meal and Chelsey found herself having seconds of the roulade (jam filled sponge cake) and the somloi galuska (chocolate trifles). Just before clearing the table and washing up the dishes Leslie stood up at the head of the table holding a small burlap potato bag.

‘We all know what happened to Chelsey today and on behalf of Wild Women I would like to apologize for not preventing it from going as far as it did. Could you come up here Chelsey, I have a little something here for you that may help you to forget about it. Please excuse the lack of wrapping paper, this is the best we could do on short notice.’

Chelsey stood and Leslie handed her the bag. She looked into it and it contained six of the leather tethers and a pair of scarves. One of the scarves was knotted around the center of the other to make a colorful homemade ball gag.

Chelsey looked up to see the smile on Julie’s face and knew that she had told them about her admission to liking bondage. ‘Is this some sort of prize for being the last ones back?’ she joked looking at Julie’s beaming face.

‘No’ said Leslie ‘those are just the necessities. Your prize is sitting over there’ as she pointed towards Julie. Chelsey looked back again but this time it wasn’t the smile she was looking at. What she saw was a real prize, a new friend.

Chelsey thought to herself “Maybe I won’t be sleeping alone tonight after all?”
