Old TUG photos and history

Postby Rope_guy » Wed Mar 12, 2008 10:27 pm

I wonder how long TUGs have been around. I'm asking this since I ran across thisphotograph of a tied-up boy taken way back in 1922. It is the oldest TUG photograph I have found on the Internet, and the oldest BIEL (bondage in everyday life) photo as well. I also wonder about the story behind this photo. If this boy is still alive today, he'd be in his 90s.

If anyone knows of any vintage TUG stories or photos, you can reply here.

I think, too, it has been around as long as people have had enough spare time to do such things ;)

Most TUG stories surely won't qualifiy as great literature i am sure, so it may be difficult to find any of them 100+ years after they were written.

Some names which come to mind to me:
-Alan Mac Clyde: (pseudonym for many writers of BDSM literature in France, 1920's and 30's
-Marquis de sade: Obvious...1740-1814
-Leopold von Sacher-Masoch: Author and journalist, 1836-1895. The term "masochism" is named after him

If you want to go further into the past, look for not-so-obvious descriptions, as authors hardly could write straight TUG stories in a world dominated by a extremistic church...

Perhaps the first "damsel in distress" still known today is andromeda, from ancient greek's mythology, whose mother offended Poseidon. Poseidon sent a beast to ravage the land, and Andromeda's parents fastened her to a rock in the sea to appease him.
Check out rembrands Andromeda for a picture of the scene ;)

And as time flies on, one finds more and more examples ;)
John Everett Millais' picture "knights errand" from 1870 for example could show up even in a TUG story of today (maybe minus the knight's armor...).

As you can see, the theme of tied up/helpless persons has been existent at least as long as humans made art.

sorry for the long monoloque ;)

Cheers

When was rope first used to tie someone up?

My bet is either someone caught doing a crime/spying or in a war. It could be cool, though, if the first time was a caveman using a vine to capture his favorite cavewoman :)

That is very probable. But I don't think those can qualify as Tie-Up Games; ropes were then used for nasty purposes - slavery, imprisonment, kidnapping, god sacrifices (e.g., biblical Abraham) - so I think we'll have to look a bit sooner in History.

You could imagine some shepherds' sons in ancient times fooling around with rope, but you can never be too sure.

I was answering the question "When was rope first used to tie someone up?". Obviously games came much later in history. Tying someone to a tree as a prank might have happened in ancient times, though.

This Comment is not ment to be Racist but my Grand-Father was a Child then and his Older Brother who is now in his 90's would be diciplined in such way either for sassing his Parents or Beating his Siblings..... They also told me if you seen a African American child tied in this Manner in the US he was a slave who refused to do his work and could be left there for a few days as punichement for doing so....
