Not sure about the US, but in the UK we hold a minute's silence on memorial days. For 11/11, it's at 11am due to The 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month marking the end of the the Great War.
But don't forget this is the real world. Do you want a surgeon to stop for a minute silence during surgery? What if someone works three jobs just to keep their house and a national holiday is the only chance to get out of the house.
In a sense, remberence days are to celebrate those who died to secure our freedom, and we have the freedom to do other things besides thinking of them for the entire day.
