On the topic of 'hating them despite we not being able to do better', it is common to dislike someone who doesn't do what you want them to. You want a politician to vote through laws A, B and C, yet they instead vote through laws D, E and F. The thing with politics is no one gets what they want all the time, and that is the entire point of it. My father was once the shop steward on his workplace (ie the representative of the workplace to the trade union and workplace). He did it once and vowed never again. This is because in any dispute, the workers want A and the employers want C. They will never agree to A or Z between them, so there must be a balance. So the workers hate the steward because they got B and not A, and the employers hate them because they got B and not C.
Also, without getting distracted too much by conspiracy theories, high level politics is a zone totally unknown to the common citizen. Sure, we see the presidents/prime ministers/heads of state during their public conferences, but what are they doing the rest of the time? I'm sure many of the rumoured back room deals are real, and there are likely many that will never be known. Global politics is a highly dangerous game, and likely one where any major movement can cause serious trouble.
Also, we often hear the bad things, such as that the UK government sold most/all of it's gold reserves when gold was at a record low, or that the US government is more than a trillion US dollars in debt. But we often don't hear about whatever everyday good work happens, because the media is responsible for telling us 99% of what we know about politics (unless you know a politician personally or are one yourself). The media tends to prefer bad stories because everyone likes to complain, call public figures idiots and hear about all the bad things in the world. 'Politicians sign through stupid law' tends to get more attention than 'Fluffy kitten rescued from tree, child owner pleased'.
