best live concert you been at?

Postby viking » Tue May 08, 2012 7:34 am

i thought since we had some discussions about our musical taste lately, maybe we could talk about the best live concert we been at.
now, live music videos that you have seen on a DVD, VHS, TV, youtube or anywhere else on the Internet does not count. it has to be a live concert that you actually where at.

I'll begin.
one of the best concerts i've been on was in Northern Norway. i got there trough my job as the hotel i was working at by the time was a part of the sponsors for the festival. part of the sponsor deal was that our hotel would be having one of the food stands.
our stand was right across the stage, so i was basically getting paid to serve food to our customers and i had a great view directly at whoever was playing.

that year there was a lot of huge musical artists coming to town, some that i really liked already, someone i never heard about and some that i didn't like at all.
among them where:
- The Hives.
- N.E.R.D.
- DeLillos.
- BigBang.
- Röyksopp.

but there was 2 bands that i never heard of before this festival that i really enjoyed.
first out was Danko Jones. when they first entered the stage i had no idea what to expect, but then BOOM. it was awesome, the show they made was so big i couldn't believe the audience weren't anymore excited. they even made a tribute to other legends like Johnny Cash and Cliff Burton. and at the end the vocalist said that when they arrived Norway and he saw the rain it pleased him, and he wished for it to start F***ing raining again.
when they stroke the last note and left the stage, the rain was showering down on the whole town.

the second one was a British band called Manic Street Preachers.
they knew exactly how to make the audience pay attention. already when they got on stage the vocalist said "this one's called Motorcycle emptiness" and then they started to play.
the audience went crazy and the music was great.
usually I'm more into the heavy kind of music. you know hard rock, punk, grunge and metal.
but after that day, i got a whole new opinion about the British Pop-rock genre.

how about you guys? what is the best live concert you have ever been at?

Almost impossible to answer:

The free one for the opening of the Channel Tunnel. Oysterband started, fighting the most godawful pa sound I’ve ever heard followed by Alain Stivell. Superb music. Incredible atmosphere and a parade of giants form the Pas de Calais ad our own Green Knight.

When Karlheiz Stockhausen came over to supervise performances of “Grupen”. Stand-up, foot-stamping, gob-smacking, unbelievable.

Harrison Birtwhistle’s opera, “Gawain”. Everything you could want from an evening at the theatre: full-frontal nudity, an on-stage beheading and a pantomime horse.

An evening sitting on the stage with the late Fred Jordan, an English traditional singer, and running the evening.

The first time my own band played a festival – but I don’t suppose that counts.

PS the “Manics” are Welsh!
Boxer shorts are cool,
but little speedos rule!

Probably the second time I saw Morrissey. Epic doesn't begin to describe that night.

This happen A few years back during my last deployment to Iraq, Toby Keith had come over and were playing when a short distance away we heard an explosion. To this day I cant tell you if that was a Controled Det or some insurgents firing a Mortar at us who knows all I know is The Band stopped playing Toby took hold of the Mike and said YOU MISSED DUMB ASS! that of course brought the house down.
Then the concert went on

Ive been to many concerts over the years since then but that one is one I will NEVER forget

I have actually never been more jealous than anyone. *hatred*

The best I've probably been to was Muse on their last UK tour. Seriously unbelievable.

If I was REALLY wanting to make you jealous, I would tell you that I am shortly going to be seeing Morrissey for a third time.

Oh wait.... I am! :D

Well this was not as big as any of the concerts here mentioned so far but when I was in high school Fred Penner came to Cardston one year and gave a free outdoor concert for a children's festival there. I was very surprised to see lots of my high school classmates show up as fans of his.

man, i would have loved to participate on any of those concerts.

i remember a couple of years ago Ozzy Osbourne was coming to the quart festival in Norway and playing guitar with him was nobody else but SLASH. I'm a huge fan of both but i did not have the opportunity to go.
by the other hand a couple of girls i know was going. i got a little, jealous I'll admit that. but what really pissed me off was when i met those girls about a month later and told them i wish i could have been there to see Slash and Ozzy my self.
they told me:
"oh we didn't care to see them, we only saw black eyed peas and we then left. we just wanted to see what was important"

 <- the look on my face when they told me

Brutal, didn't even know what they were missing. That's awesome though. Where was Ozzy's regular axeman that night? No Zakk Wylde? Jake E Lee? The Ozzy show I was thinking of Zakk Wylde was on guitar, and Jason Newsted was on bass, and this was within a year or two after leaving Metallica. I heard Jason was greatly responsible for alot of the Black Sabbath they played that night. They played for almost 3 hours! Amazing show.

i agree, they have no idea what they where missing. you can find some clips from the show on youtube but they all lack in quality.
like this one for an instance http://youtu.be/E8MhXlwV2GQ
about Zakk Wylde, i honestly have no idea about where he was that night.

and 3 hours of Ozzy with Zakk and Jason must have been awesome. they are all great musicians when it comes to metal.

alright, so i'm making a HUGE bump on this one, but it's about time that i updated my concert experiences a little bit 8)

not too long after i first started this topic i decided that "screw it, i wanna see my favorite bands wail i still can, but i live in the middle of nowhere, and there is no way i'll ever get to see any of them if i'll just work my ass off around here" so i decided to pay attention to some of the bigger festivals and quickly caught my eye on Download festival at legendary Donington in England.
soon after, they announced the headliners for Download festival 2013, Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Rammstein.
shortly after this more bands were announced, Motörhead, Queens Of The Stone Age, Volbeat and many more.
it was destiny, i had to attend this, no matter what!

time flew by, and i eventually arrived Donington. it was a long trip, and at first i didn't believe this was happening.
i entered the gates, got my wrist band, walked down toward the biggest stage i have ever seen in my entire life and watched the first band play.
Rise To Remain: lead vocalist in the band was Austin Dickinson, if you're a fan of Iron Maiden, then guess who his father is.
they were good, i even purchased the only album they have made on a CD when i got home. the band broke up a few months later though...

anyway, i still couldn't believe that i really was attending this. i had dreamt about going to a concert with so many of the bands playing there for many years, and i was thinking for a long time that i was dreaming, i would probably wake up any minute now and go back to my regular life and work.
it wasn't until i stood by the barricade at the Zippo Encore stage that i suddenly realized that this was real.
in my younger days i played a lot of Guitar Hero, and Dragonforce was suddenly walking up on the stage.
as i realized that this was reality, and that i was just about to see the legends who had the most difficult song ever on GH3 perform live right in front of me, i could feel a cold chill going through the spines of my entire back, all the way from my shoulders to my ass crack.

i remember my exact thoughts at the moment "HOLY DIVER! i'm about to see Dragonforce, and right after they are done, Europe will enter the stage, followed by Volbeat, then i will be watching Bullet For My Vallentine and Slipknot on the main stage shortly after... this is happening, THIS IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING FOR REAL!!!"
and damn, all i can say is all the bands delivered.
during Slipknot, the audience went so fucking berserk (excuse my language, but i really couldn't hold back on this one) they managed to break the barricade... TWICE!!!
Corey Taylor literally had to stop the show, TWICE, and tell the audience to back off so the security could fix the barricade, then he told us (the audience) to calm down before anyone got hurt.

the day after it continued, UFO opened the main stage, i discovered Heaven's Basement, i got to see Hardcore Superstar for my second time, then i got Alice In Chains, Motörhead, Queens Of The Stone Age, and finally the one band i had wanted to see perform for so many years... IRON MAIDEN!
for the show they had decorated the entire stage based on the Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son album, and they only played the classics from the '80s and the early '90s.
after the show i told myself, i can finally die happy.

the Sunday made it all even more perfect than it already was, HEALLYEAH was playing, Coal Chamber, Five Finger Death Punch, Parkway Drive, Stone Sour, Airborne, A Day To Remember (that band really made it a day to remember as well) and finally ending the entire festival with a huge bang was Rammstein.

so exactly how good was the experience? well, this was back in 2013. this year i went back for my fourth year in a row.
i could probably write a book about all the experiences i have had at Donington for four years in a row now.
The Offspring playing the entire Smash album in one set followed by an encore based on their greatest hits.
Linkin Park playing Hybrid Theory at it's full set.
Twisted Sister proving why they are the best live band that has ever been on the planet.
Mötley Crüe's last festival performance in Europe (that is if they don't suddenly decide that they need money again).
Judas Prieast, Kiss, Slash, Marilyn Manson, Megadeth, Disturbed, Killswitch Engage, Halestorm, Atreyu, Babymetal, Sixx:a.m. and many others...
oh, and this year, i got to see Iron Maiden and Rammstein again :D

this festival has become my second home, and i am already aiming for my fifth year in 2017, i don't even care who's headlining, I'm going, no matter what! \m/

cheers

oh, i should also add that i have seen a few other bands in my country as well, though i had to travel all the way to the capital to see them
this includes Alice Cooper, AC/DC and Eluveitie \m/

Sorry for posting on a somewhat old thread but I would have to say AC/DC. They were in their sixties and still swinging from giant bells, firing off cannons and mooning the crowd.
