WINTER RULES!

Postby snobound » Fri Oct 15, 2010 5:24 pm

I have to share my excitement! I just came down from Sherburne Pass in the Green Mountains (Killington)... eight inches of heavy, wet snow! 50-60 MPH north winds and whiteout conditions. Lots of dumb ass drivers off the road too. A true nor'easter. I love winter.

Alas, down in the valley, RAIN...

In NE Jersey?? Naruto... you'll be waiting until December, at the earliest. That's a tough spot for a snow lover!

Shane: Living in Udaho, I would have thought that you'd beat my first snowfall by at least a few weeks. Are you in the Snake River Valley?

And here I was thinking it had cooled off with temperatures in the upper-70s here. Snow? In October? That's just wrong. Snow should be on the ground for, at most, one night a year in January.

I'm feeling bitterly cold just reading this thread.

Me too, and I live in Maine (which some people seem to think is in the Arctic wilderness for some reason).
No snow here yet - we generally get little until around Thanksgiving. But then we usually have it until April! Yeech!!!
In fact, New jersey and New York typically get snow *before* Maine does! Not sure why; something to do with the gulf stream or jet stream or something.
I hope this coming winter is like last winter - with almost no snow at all!!! (sorry Snobound! )

There are some years with continuous snowcover from November through April, especially at higher elevations. The problem today is that there are still leaves on many trees, and the snow is wet and heavy= broken branches.

As a Brit who enjoys being out in the Forest, I resent just having had to to go into long trousers for the season.
I rejoice in the lack of snow in the Forest but it has been known to arrive on April Fool's Day: the start of the "season".
And the only good use for ice is to put it into martinis.

I don't really care for the beach, but the temperature I'm assuming you have is much, much better than what I read above.

To think it was 90 here earlier in the week and some people here are seeing snow...the only good ice is ice in your drink.

This winter I think I will take a nice month-long vacation in the Land Down Under, where January is in the summertime! I've always wanted to visit Australia anyway, ever since I saw some show called Skippy (an Australian-made version of Lassie about a boy and his pet kangaroo, for those who don't recognize the reference) when I was 10!

I was just looking at some climate Data for Idaho- I didn't realize that the state is as dry as it is. Twin Falls gets, on average, about 10.4 inches of precipitation annually. I take careful records at my place (yes, I'm a weather dork), and exceeded that in the last month.

If I lived in Idaho, I'd have to go somewhere like Coeur d’Alene, or even deeper into the mountains to be happy.

Yes well I was born in Idaho Falls and have visited lots of the great skiing resorts in the state not to mention the Tetons, Shoshone Ice Caves, and many other great places including Hell's Canyon.

You should count your blessings; where I live averages closer to 40 inches per winter and I'll bet many people on this board (like Snobund) see twice that.
I'd be tickled pink if where I lived got only two inches of snow a year every eyar!

I was born in Tasmania, the most southerly state, and only ever saw snow on the tops of mountains. Since Australia is the hottest, driest and flattest continent, snow is a rarity. (I have hiked to the summit of Australia’s highest mountain without walking on snow.)

Anither reason why I think I've always been fascinated with the idea of living in Australia; no snow.
Plus; I'd like to see a live kangaroo.

We've gone entire winters without seeing snow here. Last year was really unusual, it snowed about 3-4 times here. It's the first time I can ever remember multiple snowfalls in the same winter. It was a very bitter winter though, by far the coldest I've ever seen here.

Somebody else I talk to from way up North (not on this site) thinks I'm crazy for living in an area where tornadoes are more common than snow. That might change your opinion. I can't imagine 40 inches of snow. I haven't seen that much snow in my entire life combined, probably not even really close to it.
