Wow, you all seem pretty judgmental about judgmental people.

But seriously, I don't think insecurity is the whole answer, at least not in the sense of needing to prop themselves up and feel superior. One big source of judgmental attitudes is religion - the Big Boss in the Sky says it's an abomination, so it's not enough that they not do it - they have divine orders to stop other people from doing it too.
But even leaving that out of the mix, there are some people who just have a very narrow comfort zone, and don't like anything that's different. Sex is a big source of that - even without the religious taboo on homosexuality, some people are so unnerved by the thought of doing
that (whether homosexuality or anything else unusual, including what we on this board like to do) that they don't like anyone who even causes them to think about
that.
And finally, a lot of it has to do with (what they consider to be) lack of consideration. I suspect all of you on this thread have some standards of what is and isn't appropriate public behavior, and look askance at those who violate those standards - e.g., going into a restaurant smelling like someone who hasn't bathed in a week. Looking at the original example - if there was dirt on the overalls, maybe the person just has a dirt phobia, and thinks it's wrong to go into a shop in dirty clothes even though they have no problem with the occupation itself. That kind of judgmental behavior, I try not to be too judgmental about.
