Tacky, Tacky, Tacky

The Obama campaign must really be getting desperate. They just announced that they want people with weddings, anniversarys, birthdays, or other special events, to register with Obama for America, and to ask their friends to donate, in lieu of a gift.

"President Barack Obama’s campaign is asking couples to forgo wedding gifts and donate to his campaign instead. It’s the latest fundraising gimmick by his campaign, which has seen a steep dropoff in donor support since 2008.

A blog post on the Obama/Biden 2012 website rolled out the "Obama Event Registry," which asks anyone with an upcoming birthday, wedding, or anniversary to "support the President on your big day" by asking for donation money "in lieu of a gift."

“Got a birthday, anniversary, or wedding coming up?” the a "news item" on the website says. “Let your friends know how important this election is to you—register with Obama 2012, and ask for a donation in lieu of a gift. It’s a great way to support the President on your big day. Plus, it’s a gift that we can all appreciate—and goes a lot further than a gravy bowl."

The story links to a website that reads, "Got a special milestone or event coming up?

"Instead of another gift card you'll forget to use, ask your friends and family for something that will go a little further: a donation to Obama for America."

This was so bizarre, and with no posted source, I would have just about sworn you had to be making this up. But no, unfortunately, you are not.

http://www.barackobama.com/news/entry/t ... t-registry

Snopes, at least, is considering this legit, which is enough for me.

I'll just say this, whoever came up with this in the Obama administration is in the wrong job.

Many times I will decline to post a source or a link, not because I don't have them, but because, too often, they are dismissed as "self serving" by some of those on the other side of the political aisle. This time, I made reference to Obama's site, but gave no link. Thanks to Kyle for providing the link, and the additional link to Snopes.

I've had my questions about Snopes, as the site is run by a couple of Democrat supporters. But they got it right this time.

Well, since you do the same thing yourself you can hardy squawk about it!
I'm hoping the links Kyle showed us is just some prank someone pulled to make Obama look bad (as if either Obama or Romney needed the help) or some other buffoonish mistake made without Obama's direct knowledge, but I'm probably being foolishly naive. This is, without a doubt, the most tasteless bid to raise campaign funds that I have *ever* seen!!!

>>>This is, without a doubt, the most tasteless bid to raise campaign funds that I have *ever* seen!!!<<<

Sort of gives you an idea of the quality and intelligence of the people on Obama's campaign staff. Can you say "Dipsticks?" This had to go through several levels of approval before it was posted to Obama's official campaign site. This was not something that was done at a county, or even a state level. This came out of Obama's national campaign office, and it was approved by someone with access to Obama, or his chief of staff, possibly even by Obama, himself.

In a couple of weeks, after being derided by the right, and harshly criticized by the left, the "gift registry" will probably quietly disappear, and the person or persons that originated this less than brilliant idea, will be quietly invited to take an extended vacation, well away from the campaign and any of its offices.

To be honest, nothing surprises me about the stupidity involved in American politics and elections.

Given the last time there was that stupid bulls-eye map.

The worst thing that ever happened in British politics was the stupid 'Satan eyes' posters done by the Conservatives advertisers. This caused such a backlash that it cost the Conservatives votes.

We've never had anything like that since.

......... i know i said this before but i'l say ut again for whats it worth. We really need to put this all in one topic! seeing the whole JIF section filled with basickly the same subject is annoying!.

About the subject itself, i don't see a problem. I don't believe many people will give up their weddings gifts to give Obama and the ones who do would be stupid but people are allowed to be that.

Lack of knowledge can be cured through education, but you can't cure stupid. Unfortunately, stupidity is not a jailable offense. If it was, we'd all probably be cellmates over the stupid things we've done, starting in our high school years. (Like dumping an eight foot shark in the swimming pool of a rival high school.) But, at the time, it seemed like a fun thing to do, and actually, that wasn't stupid at all. It was just batshit crazy. But what the hell do you expect out of three 16 year olds who had known each other for ten years?

There is a difference between crazy and stupid, too.

The solution is simple Chris; simply ignore any topics that were originally posted by Drawscore!!! :big: Of course, then you may as well just ignore the entire Jump in the Fire forum altogether, since no one else seems to be posting much of anything here lately. :geek:

I don't really know this event, but if it was this bad, over here someone would see it and seemingly think "how could I possibly top this level of stupidity?" And then they would go and do it.

Drawscore, Kyle and Jason, for God’s sake have some dignity.
Your phoney outrage just makes you look silly.
More to the point, if this sort of nonsense is more important to you than the economy, foreign policy, etc, then it is obvious that your psychotic hatred of Obama has nothing to do with his administration’s record.
We all know where the hate comes from, and it’s a testament to your lack of character that you don’t have the courage to admit it.

Sarabah:

There is always someone who will try and deflect attention away from the Obama campaign's gaffe. But some folks still try to defend the indefensible.

Did his campaign do this? Yes

Does it reflect badly on him? Yes

And all the screaming of "You hate Obama!," or "You're a racist bastard!" will not alter those facts. And for the record, I don't hate Obama. I just think his policies and appointments suck.

And one other thing. As a resident and citizen of the US, I generally refrain from sticking my nose into the politics of Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Mexico, France, and other nations. If you don't have a dog in the hunt, it might be better to just sit back and watch. I have no doubt that you would be more than a little annoyed, if I was harshly critical of Australian political figures, when I don't live there, and know little or nothing about Australian politics. We'll fight amongst ourselves, thank you. Neither side needs outside help.

Let's see--Mitt Romney held a weekend pow wow for campaign supporters--750 all together and they each guaranteed to donate $250,000 (a quarter of a million dollars each!), or a total over one weekend of $187 million. Quite a take. Exactly what will he do with all that money, especially since these donors are almost all anonymous and his campaign is technically not supposed to coordianate with super PACS. Further, the billionaire Koch brothers are seeking to generate $400 million and billionaire Sheldon Adelson is forking over $100,000,000!

Obama's fund raising idea smacks of desperation for sure. Up against so much money of unknown origin how is a democracy (or even a Republic if you wish) to avoid becoming an oligarchy, or government run by only the rich 1%. I've said it before, we have the best government money can buy.

Sarobah, pull you head out of your butt, take off your special Obama glasses, and quit being an idiot for a minute. I've said many times I'm not a hater of Obama on here and I'm pretty sure I don't trust Romney either, for what that's worth. Heck, I'm pretty sure Jason is an Obama supporter. I think even a moron can tell this is a pretty low-class way to ask for money though. Does it mean Obama shouldn't be re-elected? No, certainly not. I have no idea if Obama is the one who thought this up or not but somebody in his administration did and he had to have approved it at some point.

I'm already ready for this election to be done and over with and we haven't even hit the primaries yet.

Any truly independent thinker (as opposed to an extreme right-winger pretending to be otherwise), doesn’t look for specious reasons to attack Obama. Personally, I don’t think much of him... because he’s too conservative.
If you don’t like the man, at least have the honesty and decency to attack his policies. Don’t make up reasons to attack him, especially on something as trivial as this. As I said, it just makes you look silly.

BTW... My apologies to Jason. I think you’re wrong... but wrong for the right reasons :o)

Please, feel free to criticize Australian politics and politicians. The best thing that can happen here is if some outside force comes in and saves this country from its course of self-destruction. In two years we have gone from the best performing economy on the planet to being an economic basket case, purely because of political infighting.
But the real issue is... Whether you like it or not, the US is the most powerful and most influential nation in the history of the world. What you do affects us all, and will for the next fifty years. Europe is on the decline, China is a chimera. If you guys cannot get your act together, the world is screwed.

Romney as President would simply take us on the same austerity path to economic destruction much of Europe is facing. The policies the Republicans espouse are as wrong-headed as when FDR tried the same thing in 1937 - and revived the Great Depression!

Wrong about what, exactly? I think that ad IS tacky... but it's certainly not enough to keep me from voting for Obama if that's what you're wondering about. I have far many more issues about Romney than I do with Obama, such as his hypocrisy in devising a health care bill (which includes a provision requiring people to buy it, which is what the conservatives claim to be the most upset about with "Obamacare"!!!) for his own state and then criticizing a similar one put through nation wide by Obama. What a crock!!!

For a little comedy relief go to youtube and type in YTMND-Religion and Politics. The voice is the late Scott Beach, an actor and San Francisco broadcaster. That is probably NOT his image on the video. Radio personality Dr. Demento used to play this. Enjoy!
