Quotation marks and apostrophes of Old stories Got Screwed!

Postby Tom Ford » Mon Mar 05, 2012 9:26 am

Dear Administrators,

I just checked some of my finished stories, and I found out that all the apostrophes, the ' of stories, became ’ after the update. And all the quotation marks became “.

For example, I copied this from chapter one of Caught Snooping.

“Where do you think you’re going?” I asked.

Obviously, it should read "Where do you think you're going?" I asked.

What I want to ask is, can this be fixed, and if it can, is this board going to fix this? This isn't only a problem for my stories, but I looked at other stories as well, and they have the same problem.

Or do I have to edit each chapter myself?

And in future upgrades, will this happen again?

Thank you for reading this.

I mentioned this to Zanev yesterday but my subsequent post seems to be OK.

No it can't be fixed. Had I known it would have happened I wouldnt have updated the board. As for future updates, we never plan to mess things up and if we know there is a huge error before hand then we simply wont do it.

its nothing we did, because even when we messed up the board the first time all we did was restore a back up that brought everything back the way it was before we touched anything. Then we redid the updates but in a more...safer manner. The issue mainly is with the board update and nothing specific we did. we could not have prevented this.

Looks exactly how my story "Mighty Morphing Power Rangers Turbo" was when I first reposted it here last year. I gave up trying to fix the punctuation because my computer's Microsoft Word kept freezing up.

You can use a program like Notepad++ to do a find and replace on the weird ASCII characters with whatever the punctuation was before.

There are two ways to fix it if it is your story. The first one is a rather large scale pain in the ass. Go to your story, click on "edit," then go in and replace the odd figures with the proper punctuation.

The second, requires that you had enough smarts to keep a backup on your hard drive, or a floppy disc, CD/DVD, or flash drive.

Bring up your story on the board, and hit "delete." If there is no delete button, highlight the whole story, then hit the "delete" key. (It is usually wise to leave the title and first sentence, and delete everything else, so something will be there when you come back.)

Then, go to the drive that has your backup. Highlight the story, then right click. On the pop up menu, select "copy."

Come back to the board, and go to where your story used to be. Position the cursor, right click, and select "paste" from the pop up menu. Your story should appear with the proper punctuation, and then, you can go back and remove the title and first sentence, so they don't appear twice.

Anyway, I've fixed my stories.

I've saved a copy of all my stories in microsoft word, and it's just a matter of cutting and pasting and pressing the edit button.

But the sheer amount of stories I fixed (about 25 or so) and the fact that all but one of them had at least three parts made this a pain.

Thanks to all those who responded.

Anyway, I hope that in the future, if the board would be updated again, the administrators would not mess up again. I don't know why, but the other times this board had been updated, nothing of the sort happened. Let's just hope that it won't happen again.

You act like we messed it up on purpose. This was not in our control.

I'm sorry if I gave that impression. I am not blaming you, and I'm not saying you did this on purpose. I know that you did your best and you didn't want this to happen and I appreciate the new changes that you did. Again, please accept my apologies.

Anyway, let's put this behind us and hope for better things to come.
