If you did it hanging by the wrists only (like you see in some movies) then yeah, it's going to hurt a HELL of a lot no matter what you use - ropes, cuffs (especially cuffs), or leather straps - even if you're a lightweight. And the heavier you are the more it's going to hurt doing it that way. So if
that's what you did, then it's no wonder you didn't like it. That doesn't make you pathetic by any means. It's perfectly normal - if it was done
that way. IMHO anyone who says they do suspensions for hours that way is probably a liar; I doubt anyone is
that tough!! It's also pretty damned dangerous!
But rm67 described a different method: Having a rope tied around your torso, preferably at chest level underneath arms, and then lifted into the air and left hanging helplessly.
That can hurt too, (the underarms though rather than the wrists) but probably a lot less than hanging by the wrists. It depends on what is used to hang you up with and how much support it gives each part of your body.
When I was a teenager and got hung up, I was hung by my wrists, ankles, shoulders, torso, upper arms, upper legs, and my waist all at the same time - like a fly in a spider web. Not only does that render you nicely immobile but with your weight distributed evenly by a dozen different lines instead of just one or two you feel little pain anywhere if it's done right (use of padding where you are tied helps a lot too). Some of my friends (who knew very well what they were doing) had build a complex rig in their barn which could hold me aloft for hours without significant discomfort! It took time to rig me up into the thing because it was a complicated little affair made out of chains, but the result was hours of a safe and relatively pain-free suspension Tug.
Of course, that doesn't exclude the possibility of consensual torture; but that's an entirely different matter!

Dare to be different... and make a difference.
