Here in Australia, Tory politicians like to pretend they are part of the working class, but they can never quite carry it off. They pose for photo ops having a beer with the “plebs” at the local pub but end up looking stiff and uncomfortable and wishing they were sipping expensive sherry at the gentleman’s club.
A funny example occurred a few years ago when the wife of the conservative opposition leader announced how multicultural she and her husband were, learning a foreign language. Every day they were taught a new word or phrase by their Greek cleaning lady. They couldn’t understand the derision.
And for the sake of the ignorant Tory Chief Whip... In the ancient Roman republic, the plebs were an organized political force to be reckoned with. If the aristocrats didn’t give into their demands, they held a general strike and literally abandoned the city, camping outside until they were begged to come back.
Words, like Nature, half reveal and half conceal the soul within.
