Social Studies Project ff/mm

Intro -

This fictional story is inspired by an old American sit-com (Americans are really good at doing sit-coms, by the way), which I watched a few years ago and watched again today.

Basically, two girls in their early teens have "husbands" chosen for them among the boys in their class by their social studies teacher.
They have to do a project based on one week in the life of a married adult.
The girls realise they have problems when they see that one of their partners is lazy and rude, and the other is shy and reticent.
However, the boys want to control their respective marriages.
So the girls decide to show them the error of their ways.

Part 2 -

Best friends Kate and Ashley were sitting in their Social Studies class, bored out of their minds.
Ashley was the popular, flirty one who somehow seemed to not pay attention in class and still get fantastic grades.
Kate was the sporty, athletic one.
They were almost polar opposites, but they were best friends and had been since childhood.

Kate was doodling in her notebook when something the teacher said made Ashley look up sharply.
"What?" Kate hissed. "What'd I miss?"
Ashley turned to her friend excitedly.
"For our final assessment this term, we're being partnered with BOYS! We're gonna pretend to be married, and have jobs and stuff. So we can see what life is like as adults!"
Kate smiled. "Sounds exciting."

Ashley sighed, looking across the classroom.
"Oh, I hope I get partnered with Don..."
Kate wrinkled her nose.
"Don? He's a jerk."
Ashley waved that away.
"He's not that bad. And he's so cute..."

Kate rolled her eyes, then heard her name being said.
"Kate....and Nigel," Ms Rose announced.
Ashley sucked in air through her teeth. "Tough luck."
Kate looked at her. "Why?"
Ashley grinned. "He's a geek, and a loser. Never says anything."

Kate frowned at her friend's words. "Being quiet doesn't make you a loser," she said.
But Ashley didn't hear her.
Because she had been paired with Don.

The bell rang, and Ms Rose told them all to pair up and spend the day with their partners to learn more about them.
The girls parted ways with smiles.
"Good luck with Don," Kate said sarcastically.
Ashley ignored that. "Yeah, well good luck with loser boy!"
"He's not-" Kate began, but Ashley was gone. She stamped her foot in frustration.

Part 3 -

Sighing at her friend's superficial ways, Kate walked over to the table where Nigel was sitting, waiting quietly.
She pulled out a chair next to him and smiled. "Hi, Nigel. I guess we're partnering up for this thing, huh?"
Nigel blushed a little and tried to smile nervously. "I guess we are. Y-you're Kate, right?"
Kate smiled, trying to help her partner feel at ease. "That's me."
She scooted her chair a little closer and gave her partner a look-over.

He wasn't bad-looking.
He had brown hair in a fringe that covered his eyes, and a shy smile that was adorable.
Maybe, Kate thought, Ashley might think he was cute if she looked past her base stereotypes.
Kate sighed in frustration.
She loved her friend, but boy did she annoy her sometimes!

Nigel picked up on this quickly.
"W-what's wrong?" he stammered.
Kate blushed. "Oh, nothing. Just...Ashley being annoying."
"You're best f-friends, aren't you?" he asked.
Kate smiled. "Yeah, since we were tiny. Why?"
A dreamy look came over Nigel's face, and the penny dropped.
"I think I love her," Nigel said dreamily, without stammering for once.

"Jeez," thought Kate.
Truth be told, she felt a little sad for Nigel.
To love someone and have them hate you in return...she winced at the very thought.
It made her angry at Ashley.

Rather than telling the exact truth, Kate decided to spare Nigel's feelings.
"That may be a problem," she said. "Since she has her eye on Don."
Nigel's face contorted in anger. "He's a jerk! He has it in for me."
Kate raised an eyebrow, unsurprised.
Then, after a moment's hesitation, she put her hand on Nigel's .
"It's ok," she said with a smile. "We'll have a great time together as husband and wife, and you'll forget all about those two."

Nigel gave her a smile that warmed her heart.
"Sounds g-g-good, Kate."

Part 4 -

A huge grin plastered on her face, Ashley walked over to Don's desk.
Kate had been saying something to her, but it could wait.
Don, her future boyfriend, could not.

He was so handsome, she thought.
And now they were partners.
She was married to him!
Not really, of course, but Ashley would be happy to pretend.
Although for her, it didn't involve much pretending.

"Hey Don," she said in a flirty, airy voice. "I'm so glad we're partners."
"Yeah, sure, whatever," Don said, staring at his phone.
He didn't even look at Ashley as she sat down next to him.

Ashley fought the surge of irritation and smiled at her partner.
"Looks like we're married," she said, fluttering her eyelashes.
Don shrugged. "If you say so. I don't care much about this project anyway."
Ashley felt a tug in her chest.
This was not going the way she wanted.

She looked over to Kate, who was sitting and chatting with Nigel, her partner.
They were both smiling and laughing.

And clearly having a much better time than Ashley.
