Directory Map?

Postby BranBTAT » Sun Nov 30, 2014 8:09 pm

The directory is now over 11 pages and I've always found it hard to search through all of it to find people close and posting a thread here seems redundant if everyone used the directory. What are people's opinion on a map (sorta like google maps) that allows users to place a marker where they are (either their city or country or whatever they'd put in the directory). To me, this would allow everyone to find common groups of people around them and also allow us to see the spread of members across the world. I guess I could always parse the directory thread to get the info too.

Any opinions?

EDIT: For gits and shiggles, I've added this to show countries people are in. Surprised at the proportion of US members, I thought for sure UK was on top.

A fairly good idea if participation was good.

Perhaps a better organized directory?

Say instead of a global directory we can have a directory for North America, Europe, Africa, Aisa, Australia, etc. I'm not suggesting THAT particular setup but just as an example of what im talking about.

True, the original post in the directly could be perpetually edited by geographical location as people add onto the directory but then that shifts more work to the mods.

That is true. I've quickly written a little program that has taken all the posts in the directory and gotten the post and the poster. I'll automate what I can and manually do the rest (since the suggested format is only sometimes followed). I should be able to easily get it all onto a map though. If the members here are too lazy or the mods too busy, I can maintain the map manually. It's not like there are 1,000 new posts in the directory a day or anything :P

Suggest this to Zanev. If there is likely to be problem, he will know. The magic words "I can maintain . . ." might persuade him.

It's what you said :P

Anyways, me being the maintainer of it would only go as far as updating it when people posted to the directory thread, I would input that information to the map. Obviously, it would be best if people who posted to the directory also posted to the map. I already have the data for the current posts in the directory so nothing needed from those people.

Totally not biased cause Bran said it but I too support this idea. Would make planning my trips alot easier cause my meetup with Bran was scary as hell cause I was never sure where to go and coming back? Let's just say I've developed a hatred of the US state/interstate highway system.

NP- you should join AAA (American Automobile Association). Besides road service nationwide and in Canada you'll get map routings with their famous Triptiks.

Happy wandering. T.T.

Oh how much easier this would be if people used the format zanev suggested in the first post of that thread. Only some people did and the rest used whatever format they wanted, so I have to manually do those.

Anyone care to help :D We can each do a page.

Just an update, I am almost done with this. It's a lot of manually modifying things to get stuff in a standard format. To give you all an idea, there are 300 entries and each of those has at least 7 things that need to be checked. So over 2,000 things that need to be checked and manually modified as needed. Thankfully my two awesome subbys have helped me some. Oh, the joys of being a dom :)

Of course the USA would come out as the modal group. Look at the barbaric language and assumed cultural norms in most of the posts!!

LOL -- (you knew i wouldn't let that go by, didn't you?)

Absent the Spanish and in LA the French, we learned and improved on those aspects gleaned from the "Mother Country." English Common Law forms the basis on the US legal system in 49 of the States (LA grew from the Napoleonic Code). Mature English, unlike well preserved English (kinda like cabbage vs sauerkraut) has been the hallmark of development in the US for 300 or so years. In the US our cars are not dressed like women of the last century: "Secure the bonnet and latch the boot", for hood and trunk.
Becrying the insult to the tongue fostered by our youth however goes without dispute. Alas, it is a lament echoed down the corridors of time since the landing at Plymouth.
Alas, the fault, if any, lies not in the modal language but in its verbal representatives whose efforts at self improvement hallmark their fondness for TUGS. If however, we should give in to their application for linguistic punishment and tie and gag them until they improve, our only litmus would be in their articulation development of MMPFF or the like.
What to do, what to do.....?
