Store sightings?

Postby mikeybound » Wed Mar 05, 2014 10:21 am

I know places like hardware stores or massive shopping chains is good for picking up basic bondage supplies. I was wondering if anybody here has any tips for identifying bondage enthusiasts based on their shopping habits. Would it be obvious? Would they try to be subtle? Do store owners recognize it in their customers?

I remember seeing an article after that 50 Shades of Gray book or whatever it is came out that stores like Lowe's and Home Depot were seeing a big increase in the number of women coming in and buying rope. Apparently it was easy to tell because they asked for a specific kind mentioned in the book.

Short of something like that, I don't really think this is something you'd pick up on. There are an awful lot of uses for everything else. Even the last time I bought duct tape which got used for binding, I also used it for more mundane purposes. Perhaps if someone walked in and bought 2 or 3 things which could be used for bondage (rope, duct tape, zip ties, chains, padlocks, etc.) and absolutely nothing else that could be related to a home improvement project someone might wonder. That's why you buy other things you need at the same time, like light bulbs.

Back in the 1980s you could even pick up a set of real police handcuffs (not just the toy kind) at Toys 'R' Us! A toy store, for crying out loud!
Don't know if you still can though; probably not. Times have change... for the worse.

That's fine - if you're over 18, live close enough to one, and don't mind risk being seen entering or leaving the place by someone you know.

These days with the rise of Amazon you can just order the stuff you want online and have it shipped to your house but if you're like me you want to inspect the materials personally so all I do if anyone asks just say you have to bundle alot of things together and you're paranoid about it coming undone. That way you're techincally telling the truth while also being vague enough not to arouse attention.

Unless, of course, you deliberately want the check-out clerk to know what you are interested in. When I worked in a stationary store (we sold no rope, duct tape, etc.) one really rainy day a guy came in, soaked, and asked me if we sold leg irons. I was almost floored, and would have loved to have asked him: "Why?" My co-workers were right there, so just said no, sorry, and he left. If I remember correctly, he was cute and wearing a leather jacket.
This was on Long Island, New York (for Mickey's info).

Heh, went through this once. I was in the market for some new rope and a roll of duct tape. Me and the wife go to Home Depot. I try to get her to take one of the items to a different cashier because of the obvious implications of both items combined. She says something along the lines of "Oh they won't say anything, rope and tape are used for plenty of different things I'm sure they see it all the time." So I take it through myself. Sure enough the cashier made some smart ass comment about kidnapping (wish I could remember specifically what she said, but alas...) which I nervously laughed off.

Needless to say my wife got quite the "I told you so" in the parking lot.

Nothing wrong with that. Always makes me wonder if little slips like that don't make other people, like your cashier, more confident about "working out their kinks."

Friends of a relative came over one time and I commented on the large truck one of them had, and how it had a covered bed. I told her how it was a odd a girl at her age would have a truck, and asked why she needed that covered space.

She smirked and said it was for all of her rope.
Whips and chains may break my bones, but ropes and gags excite me!
