Two days left as a teenager :(

Postby BranBTAT » Mon May 27, 2013 7:03 pm

Aww, I'm sad. I turn 20 on the 30th of May. Two decades  where did they go. Ugh, I'm not ready to grow up yet, I want to stay a youthful teen forever. *puts on superhero cape*. Yesterday I was in elementary school, today I'm half-done with uni; tomorrow, mid-life crisis. I legally became an adult at age 18 and now I feel pressured to start acting like one. Birthdays should be joyous, but I feel I have wasted the past 19 of mine. :| Oh well, as one gate shuts behind me, many more beckon me onward. My youth doesn't end the moment the digits read 12:00. Yesterday sucked, today was bearable, tomorrow will be exuberant.

For those of you who have left their teen years, how did it go? Were you happy and a little sad as I am? Where you too distracted by work or life to even notice?

People who make a big deal of the fact that they have turned 20 should be forced to live in an old Folks home for a week. I was going to say torn to little bitty shreds by screaming old harpies, but that'd be too cruel I suppose. Either that or given a good birthday spanking! :spank;
Man, I'd love to be 20 again. Or even 30. Hell, even 40 would do nicely at this point in time.

More seriously though, I don't miss my teenage years so much as I do the people, places, things, and pets that were part of my life at the time. I felt the same at 20 (or even at 40 pretty much) as i did when I was 15 - only without the usual adolescent angst concerning my place in the world, etc. It's only in the last few years that i really, really wish I could turn back the clock - and then more because i can't do the same things anymore (or at least as easily)as I could when I was your age (such as run a mile without feeling like I'm going to drop dead of a heart attack before i finish, or even walk more than a few miles at a time).
For me at least, there were few things I had as a teenager I didn't have into my early 20s; even TUGs (although my TUGs partners changed over the years). And when they were gone, it wasn't because i was older but because I'd moved away. Being 20 instead of 19 made no difference to me... not even then. It's only when my life's circumstances changed (in my case joining the military) that any significant change took place. Everything else was only in my head.
I daresay you'll soon feel the same way... at least until some real change happens in your life.

While you may feel old, trust me, you are still very much in your prime. While I know I am still quite young (I will be 28 this year), I know exactly what you are going through. However, I just went through that recently! You are barely out of your teens! It's up to everybody to make their own guidelines in life, but I always gave myself my "early twenties" (up to 25) to live life hard and fast while I could. Because once you are in your 30s and 40's it becomes a lot harder to party hard, travel, and do whatever wild things you set out to do. I am nearing 30. I am getting married, saving to buy a house, an plan on having kids in the next few years. My wife-to-be has to remind me pretty often that perhaps my body can't party like it used to 10 years ago.

So the way I see it, you are just entering the best stage of your life. Just try to do and experience as much as you can and hold on to those times, because, not to scare you, but in a handful of years you will be near my age predicament, and responsibility is a much bigger part of life.

You are as old as you feel. Yesterday, I felt like I was 13. Today, I feel like I'm 85.

Yeah, because now you wont' have to hide that secret drinking habit anymore!
At least, that's the usual reason people (at least in the US) are excited to turn 21.

I felt someone, erm, "experienced" like Jason would reply similarly. I should be proud that I am in the prime of my life and I still have time to experience lots of things before all the "big boy" responsibilities start calling to me. Finding my life-long companion, having to buy a house and consider the bills, kids, military :worried:. Maybe I will choose to live it up for a few more years before I tackle those things. As drawscore said, its just perspective and when I turn 20 tomorrow, I want to feel the same as I do now and keep feeling that way for many years. Thanks everyone.

If you live in the US then congrats Falcon, drinky drinky! Got a little while longer before I can do that here.

I'm 21 and turning 22 next month and while my parents say I need to start acting like an adult I say "Hell Nuh!" I'm gonna live it up until I'm at least 30 or 35!

I managed to party quite hard 'til my mid thirties, it's just that the hangovers get worse and I could never put myself down to lead workshops on th second morning of a residential. There was one wekkend I had organised and woke up on the Sunday morning to find out that the others had enjoyed quite a drunken party around me! I still wonder if I missed out on anything.

Well my new job is starting right after my 21st birthday, but I still think I can have some fun with this.

Yup, I'm from the States. Drinky drink for me. :3

Today I got the most adult gift anyone could never ask for ... a collection notice. Mother nature is also reminding me I have allergies. Oh bugger, what a wonderful way to celebrate.
I had to have allergy shots when I was your age, myself. Beats sneezing your face off every summer!

I took allergy shots all through middle school; not sure why my parents stopped them. I may have to start again or move out of the South; I feel my head will explode soon from all the sneezing.

OK! Don't laugh! Have you tried homeopathic remedies? I know they have no basis in scientific terms but they control my hay-fever reasonably and completely nullify the travel sickness from which I still suffer as an old fart.

By the way, what the !£$% is a "collection notice"?

I had a medical bill I was unaware of a few months back and now it's been passed to a debt collection service. The letter says something along the lines of "pay us this amount soon or we will keep bugging you and ruin your credit for several years." It is somewhat like pissing off a loan shark.

You have my sympathy. Mr. Smug here is garteful that in Britain we have a National Health Service that is free at the point of delivery.
Hang on: are you seriously telling me that some health provider was hastling a minor ( if that is theappropriate US term ) for medical payment? That's barbaric!

What is th age of majority in the US?

Re: Two days left as a teenager :(

The NHS system is something I have always wanted available to me in the US. I became an adult at 18 so I wasn't a minor at the time of the visit. Since my 18th birthday, I have accumulated around $20,000 of medical bills, all of which are my responsibility since I'm an adult (parents can still pay, but if they forget a payment or something, it goes on *my* record). I've not even been an adult for two years and I'm already in debt.

I believe it is actually my insurance company that requested the debt collection. The doctor did "extra, unneeded services" while I was there and the insurance is refusing to pay. I don't know if its worth the time and trouble of haggling them or just paying the $100 bill and being done with it.

Bran, I don't know about where you are but here in Maine if you earn under a certain amount a year (I believe it's $18,000 or so), you can get ALL medical debts forgiven if they are associated with a local hospital and/or many private practitioners who are associated with hospitals. I managed to dodge a $65,000 hospital bill this way when I had cancer surgery a few years ago. This is something you should see is available to you. Even if not, it might be better (at least for now) to have rotten credit than to pay that steep a bill.

That would be good advice Jason BUTTTT if he has a lousy credit score it will adversly affect him getting a job, buying a house, etc.

That shit follows you around FOREVER or at least for a REALLLY long time.

True NemesisPrime... but he still might be better off keeping that money he doesn't even have; especially considering how difficult it is these days to maintain a good credit score anyway. Hell, I gave up trying years ago and it's never adversely affected me even though I know mine is only so-so for various reasons (I never use credit cards for one). Anyway, if he can get a waiver from the hospital, his credit likely would not be impacted - or at least nowhere near as much.

Enjoy growing up because you will get to experience new things and remember with good exercise and healthy eating, you will not lose your teenage youth. Go out there and have fun in a day by day basis.
You will have to subdue me to restrain me. I been a bad boy so make sure you torture me too with anything but pain.
