My daughters - anyone been in this situation

Postby Suestruggles » Mon May 28, 2012 12:08 pm

On Sunday my daughters were playing in the garden with friends. None of them are teenagers yet. I saw My elder daughter hopping accross the lawn. I noticed she had her hands behind her back too. I went out and saw she had black tape round her ankles. I went out to investigate and found one of the frineds lying tied hand and foot with tape too and shreiking as my younger daughter was spraying her with a watering can of cold water. (we have a hosepipe ban LOL).

I laughed it off but what should I do? leave it as a one of game, talk to them about safety and encourage yhem in TUGS. If the want to play tie up games i want them to do it safely but I don't want to put any pressure on them.

Has anyone been in this position ?

It probably was just a game. But if you see it happening again, then you can step in and talk about safety.

Clearly their mother's daughter mind. :D

I'd have just had them pause in what they were doing for a moment and ask if everything was okay. If they say (or nod if gagged) yes and seem to mean it, I'd just let them carry on with what they were doing while also keeping an eye on things to make sure they continue to just have fun. If anyone cries or otherwise show that they're not really having a good time, then I'd intervene but not be harsh - a gentle lecture on safety would probably suffice - unless someone was actually getting hurt. If they know you're cool with it they probably won't try to hide an innocent game of TUGs from you.
At least, that's how I think I'd react - but I must admit I've no experience as a parent.

Hey Sue, just my 2 cents worth (oops, you're British, make that 2 pence!), but TUGs genes may be in your DNA. Just like Jason Toddman, it's apparent that I'm not a parent but I would adivise them "Safety First". If I recall, you, Jason and Sarobah were introduced the World of TUGs by an older brother. (For me it was seeing a DID on a kids TV show when I was 6. It wouldn't have mattered if it was a damsel or dude in distress. I was just mesmorized.) Like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Teach Your Children about TUGs Safety, just like you teach them about traffic safety, or safety around train tracks or climbing into a tree fort. Let kids be kids but keep a watchful eye out there.

No experience as a parent either, but this is how the interest starts in playing games as kids.

Still reckon the TUGs thing is genetic in some way.

They're all clearly were having fun. I don't want to force my views on them but want them to play safe and have fun. Any parents here seen this? how did you deal with it

Actually, in my case it was a younger brother, and I introduced him :o)
Otherwise, good advice (from all responders).

Oops, sorry Sarah, thanks for setting the record straight. Still it's all in the family. The TUGs gene is in our DNA and is often passed down as many who are parents are finding out. Someday you may clean your kids room and find rope, gags or handcuffs tucked away. I'm always fascinated in what makes us tick.

From what you've said, I don't really understand what you're concerned about. Simply telling them to play safe and have fun hardly seems like forcing your views on them. Just tell them to play safe and have fun in the same way you'd tell them the same thing if they decided to go out roller-skating, play hockey, climb a tree, or go swimming. Like I said, if they know you're not bothered by their TUGs play as long as they play safe and respect one another, they won't likely try to 'pull the wool over your eyes' and you probably won't have to worry about what their doing when you're not around. Sounds like they're acting pretty responsibly already anyway.

I am a parent and it's part of my role as a father to pass on my knowledge of right vs wrong, good vs bad, truth vs lies. I can try to force my views down my daughter's throat, but it won't work anyway. We talk, we share, and I correct her when necessary. I teach, instruct, and spend time with her. We have and enforce appropriate boundaries. As for this game, as long as it seemed like harmless fun (and it sounds like it) I wouldn't get too worked up. Too many who post here are into things I wouldn't want my daughter ever doing, but this sounds like children having fun.

Hey, if you like tugs and the kids start tying each other up, you have your tug!

It has happened again.

I thought my girls were a little quiet in their rooms. almost as if they were doing home work (which they never do without threats. I went upstairs and found my younger daughter's bedroom empty. My elder daughter's room was occupied. They were both sitting quietly on the floor, not really having muc h choice. both were in t-shirts, one with a short skirt and bare legs, the other in shorts with knee length socks.. Both shoeless.

They had tape around their legs at ankles and below knees, over thier mouths around their arms and bodies at elbow level and behind their backs. (I later found iut they had got the idea of taping their own wrists from an episode of "Johnathon Creek where the girl had put the roll of tape on the bed post and run her hands round to put the tape on.) there were scisors on the floor infront of them.

I took their gags off and cecked they were ok and had a long chat about safety of tie up games (I did mention some of the games brother and I played when younger) but did not offer to tie them up.

So any suggestions on what i do next?

It sounds like you've handled it perfectly. I don't know if there is anything else that needs to be done next, except of course to keep monitoring the situation and making sure they stay safe.

Ummm.... but who tied them up this time, and what was/were he/she/they doing at the time? They didn't manage to do this to themselves, did they? If they did, they're a lot more limber than *I* ever was!!!

They used the trick of putting the tape roll on a bedpost and wrapping their wrists that way

Shoot, I should have thought of that. (hits side of head with palm of hand) I actually did that same thing myself once or twice when *I* was a kid. Wound the stuff around my arms and body too. But that was so long ago I'd completely forgotten about it. Also, I was imagining a somewhat different and more stringent kind of wrapping than was probably actually the case.

Ya, she even mentioned that's what they did. I almost missed it the first time I read her post too.
