$1.3 Billion

Postby drawscore » Mon Jan 11, 2016 3:50 am

That's what the initial estimate of the Power Ball jackpot is. I squandered $10 for five Qwik Piks, and while I may not beat the 292 million to 1 odds, just on the off chance I do, those that don't like me can line up at First Avenue and Fifth Street, and you know what you can kiss.

Of course, if I do win, I won't have to worry about that, because with 1.3 billion in my pocket, EVERYBODY will like me. (If I win, and take it in a lump sum, it would be around $800 million, and probably $500 million after taxes. It's still a nice chunk of change.)

I don't normally buy lottery tickets but thought I'd splurge $2 for one this time. I figure if there's a higher power that wants me to win, one ticket will suffice. If not, I'd likely be no better off if i blew every cent I had on the things, but i can easily afford a measly $2.
If I win i'd likely take the annuity; even though I doubt i'll live long enough to collect the last yearly payment. It would ensure i'd never go bankrupt (most of the people who outspend their fortunes took lump sums; annuities help cover mistakes). Though i'd have to be some kind of special financial incompetent to burn my way through even a lump sum of half a billion dollars in a mere twenty years or so; shoot, that's be many hundreds of times more than i've earned in my entire lifetime up to this point!
If I win, one thing I'll do is make sure Zanev never has to ask for money to help support this site again, and I'll make writing contest prizes really worth going for!

There was a sign at a local merchant in my area that had pithy sayings posted on it. One time the sign read "The Lottery. A tax on people who aren't very good at math." cheers

This is true. The odds of winning the Lotto game with 49 numbers, is something like 27 million to 1. I am told that the odds of winning Power Ball, are 292 million to 1. Long odds, but the risk to reward ratio (Risk $10 to win $1.3 billion) is acceptable.

There are those that will go out and blow a couple grand on Power Ball tickets. Those people are idiots.

I agree with you both. I am aware I am more likely to be struck by lightning while drowning, but at the same time someone is going to win that lottery eventually. It could be me as well as anyone else... who buys a ticket. Despite the odds I figure I can afford $2 and never miss it, but at the same time more than one ticket every so often is likely foolish and definitely blowing huge sums on such a risk is the height of idiocy. But a risk of $2 for a chance (however slight) to win $1.3 billion (actually $1.4 billion now I hear) is quite acceptable to me too.

Some old fascist on a local social media site stated that, if "proper maths" was taught in schools, no one would ever play the lottery. Other than the opportunity to climb up on her soap box, I somehow think she missed the point.

If proper maths were taught in schools, no one would ever win the lottery either. It doesn't matter that my chances of dying today are 10,000 times better than my ever winning the jackpot in the Powerball lottery; it's human nature to simply take a shot.
Latest news is that the jackpot is $1.5 billion now!
Just so that anyone here who believes in prayer has a vested interest in the outcome, if I win the jackpot with the one ticket I bought I'll share $10,000 (or the equivalence in euros) with each person on this board with whom I've had a steady and uniformly cordial correspondence with. cheers

An elderly fellow in a small village in Ireland (the movie was made there i believe) wins an unusually large jackpot in the lottery they have there and promptly dies in his excitement. Rather than let the money be carried over into a new contest, the other members of his small village scheme to get the money for themselves by having one of them pose as the winner, while also arranging for the poor guy's public funeral.
It's meant to be a comedy, and is considerably funnier than i make it sound.

A very Irish, and very fair, solution in my opinion.
I hope they had the "host" propped up in the corner at the wake.

Ahhhh.... I'm not sure. The movie came out nearly 20 years ago and I've only seen it that one time. here's a wiki of it though.

I was in the UK and saw adverts (posters) in the Underground when it came out. In the UK it was titled "Waking Ned". In the U.S. and Canada the title was "Waking Ned Devine."

If i got 1.3 billion, I would buy a new house, fresh load of clothes, get rid of all my old stuff, more rope, handcuffs, gotta have all that, go through surgery, make myself a blond, gotta put gel in there ;), walk around my neighborhood with rope, look cute and say, "I'm an escape artist, care to tie me up?" Of course they couldn't resist.

Tickling might be fun too ;)

Speaking of the movie, "Waking Ned Devine", it has, in my opinion, great music in the movie. Especially at the end, "The Parting Glass." There are several renditions of "The Parting Glass" that can be found on Youtube. Search for it, sometime. It's a nice, poignant piece of music.
