How effective would an apple gag be.

I saw some clip of Selena Gomez with one on You Tube. The reality is it can easily be spit out. There is nothing to hold it in place.

You could always settle for a lemon. It has unfortunate recent historical applications.

I did some experimentation a long time ago and found most gags do not work. Tape over the mouth alone doesn't work nor does tying a scarf over the mouth. I have yet to find a way to make an apple or anything similar work. A cleave gag can work to an extent but it has to be tied really tightly and is hard to do. The only way to really gag someone effectively is to stuff something in their mouth that fills it and then tightly wrap something around their head several times and tie it tightly. After college, I found the best way to do a real gag is to use a ball gag. While I'm not a big fan of store bought stuff (I like rope), ball gags are the only thing that really seem to work that you can't free yourself from without using your hands or someone remove it for you. If a more authentic look is desired, a bandanna or scarf can be tied over the ball gag.

Haven't tried but can't imagine an apple gag working. What's to stop the captive from simply biting into it?

I think using an apple or anything similar is good for comedy or children's shows so it is less scary and there are no sexual overtones or whatever. It might also make for good photography but as far as being realistic or practical, it does not work.

An apple as a gag won't work, but a sufficiently large apple as stuffing (with a good tape gag over it to keep it in) works fairly well, as you can't bite it very well then (nibble it, perhaps). Happened to me occasionally as a teenager; usually wrapped in a sock so I wouldn't bite the damned thing). Probably kind of dangerous though, as it can make breathing somewhat difficult.

I once tried to gag myself with an apple. It could be easily spit out, or bitten through with a bit of difficulty. The only way that would work is if you managed to dislocate your jaw (big owie), put the apple behind all of your teeth, then set your jaw again (more owie). Stick to something with a bit of flexibility to it.

Not very effective. Unless it could be wedged in (no no) it wouldn't work and even then it could be eaten with effort.
Everyone speaks in multiple languages...But gag talk is universal and a sock in your mouth is the perfect translator!

An apple sounds like a choking hazard.

Which is precisely what I did as a teenager; at least with reasonably small apples (not the humungous ones you can find in supermarkets these days). I quite literally have a big mouth. I wouldn't want to do it now though; my jaws aren't as flexible as they were then, and prone to muscle spasms if I open my mouth wide like that now.

It is; that's why I don't recommend anyone do the kind of foolish things *I* did in putting a whole one (inside a sock yet!) in your mouth. I knew from my friends' reactions that it was a rare talent even then, but it's even harder for most other people (including me now) than I'd thought. I could also take in an entire regular-sized donut into my mouth past my teeth without breaking or biting into it. That of course is an even less ineffective gag but shows what a big mouth I had at the time. :quirk:
But yeah, on the whole, apple gags either don't work or aren't safe when they are stuffed in.

Now that takes skill, I'd bite through and eat any donut that came near my mouth.
