A Multiverse Out There??

Postby Writer » Mon Dec 13, 2010 10:52 pm

Apparently, there's been "evidence" of other universes out there asides our own... optimistically, that's a relief for me and amazing. Pessimistically, I'd need to see more proof, not just speculations... and wonder how this could help us... more trees in another universe to tear down for our univerese? :D

What makes you think that other realities exist just to help *us*? Like quantum foam, it probably just IS; whether it benefits us in any way or not. There would be no 'point' to their existence that a selfish species like Humanity could posibly understand.
If parallel universes exist, they have their own purposes in existence that have nothng to do with us or with one another, and will probably remain mutually inaccessible to one another (Sliders notwithstanding).
BTW if 'time travel into the past' is ever possible, it would probably simply be into another universe where time has not progressed as fast as in ours rather than the actual past of our own reality, so any time paradoxes involving 'changing history' would be resolved; such attempts would NOT affect the time traveler's own time/universe.

There is a good chance that there is another universe out there. We are in a gigantic universe with 9 planets, but there could be existence out there that we have not explored yet.

Do you mean universe or solar system? There *were* 9 planets in the solar system, but Pluto is no longer considered one. And at last count over 400 planets have been discovered outside the solar system, with probably billions more in our galaxy alone. I think maybe you got a bit confused between the terms universe and solar system. The Universe is *everything* we can see with telescopes; the solar system is merely the sun and everything that revolves around it.

Yeah, but a parallel universe is quite possible.

Quite true. It's very possible. In fact, some theories of advanced physics seem to *demand* their existence. Whether their mere existence can ever be proved (let alone travel to them become feasible) is a different matter, however. And as far as I know you cannot disprove the theory, because you cannot prove a negative in general. For instance, prove that vampires do not exist. I doubt they do and maybe you doubt it too, but to prove this beyond a shadow of a doubt? It's impossible. Someday though maybe the existence of alternate universes CAN be proved.
But I wouldn't count on Sliders becoming a reality in our lifetimes.

You make a good point, though a disturbing one. Imagine if we found a way to harvest the resources of an unpopulated Earth in another dimension?? Good god, how depressing. Recycle? Hell, just break out another Earth!

Those of you familiar with cosmic string theory know that the mathematics involved allows for NUMEROUS alternate dimensions.... I can't remember how many... 13 or something. Certainly an intriguing thought.

Question: Would you want to meet an alternate self in another dimension?

Actually Snobound that's not quite correct. There are 11 (not 13) physical dimensions, including the four we are familiar with in our everyday lives (time being the fourth). These are not the same as alternate universes. There are an infinity of those!!! The number of atoms in the Universe is a far smaller than the number of Universes themselves, according to the theory.

Meeting an alternate self would NOT be the same as meeting yourself, no matter how similar he was (or wasn't); so it'd be interesting to compare experiences only if they differed enough to be interesting. Otherwise I think I may as well just talk to myself

To answer your question, I would like to meet myself in an alternate dimension. The person could have a different personality, and it would be interesting to spend some quality time with him.

The most common misconception about hypothetical alternate worlds is that they exist in “parallel” universes. They would much more likely to branch off from each other at right angles, diverging more and more from ours as time progresses. There is also probably no way of ever visiting an alternate universe because they don’t exist in the same space-time.
My personal view is that the multiverse is infinite. Which means that there is not just an infinite number of identical versions of YOU “out there” (whatever that means) but an infinite number of very slightly different YOUs, etc. Of course, what does that say about personal identity if your exact personality is shared by an infinite number of other selves?
My suspicion is that if alternate universes did somehow intersect, an interference pattern would be set up, and all the different wave functions which make up each universe would collapse into a single universe.
As for Jason’s question, isn’t that the ultimate in self-bondage?

Of course it is! It's also potentially the ultimate in masturbation too - among other fun things.
It would bring new meaning to the old phrase, if you want something done right you've got to do it yourself!
The expression Go f**k* yourself would have new meaning too, that's for sure!
But considering my age and the way I've let myself go, such a thing wouldn't be as appealing to me now as it would've been when I was younger.
When I was 15 or so though... Hell yeah!!! Especially if I met an alternate self that prefers to do the tying rather than be tied... excellent!! :D

Have you read Heinlein’s All You Zombies? It’s about time travel rather than alternate worlds, but it certainly puts an interesting spin on the lyrics:
Learning to love yourself... is the greatest love of all.

I've read many of his books but missed that one somehow; I'll have to check into it sometime.

Edit: Oh wait, I HAVE read that one a long time ago. I'd simply forgotten the title, but not the story. The fellow was his own father and mother and daughter... or something like that. :D
