Story of one of my first times

Have you seen the movie Christmas Story? If so, you'll know the flag pole scene where they "triple dog dare" the boy to put his tongue on the flagpole, he does becuse how could a boy that age refuse in the face of his peers :-), and his tongue freezes to the flagpole and they leave him there. My story is a lot like that and involved friends, so it was not meant to hurt, and I didn't take it that way.

Here's what happened:

Me and a few friends would get together and play, making up games. Sometimes we would get a little bored and look for things to do. As is typical with 10 or 12 year old boys, it would sometimes go the route of the flagpole scene.

I would occasionally play a joke on my friends, so it was natural for them to try to one-up me. We were actually in the house alone which wasn't a problem at that time. We were upstairs in my room when one of my friends said he saw some kid get tied up and try to escape.

After telling his story he looked at me and suggested he and my friends could tie me up and see if I could escape. They looked at me and said we dare you to let us try, we just want to see if we can do it so you can't escape. I gave in but I made them promise to un-tie me if I couldn't get away.

They had me turn around and put my arms behind my back. They securely tied my wrists together, then had me sit in the chair. Then they tied my ankles together securely and then tied them to a leg of the chair. For good measure they tied my bound arms to the back supports of the chair so I was pretty well incapacitated. They then stood back to admire their handywork and laugh.

Meanwhile, it seemed fairly clear to me I wasn't getting out. Once they had their laugh, I told them I was stuck and reminded them they had promised to untie me. They said they wanted me to try for a little bit, so I sat there and they made a few joking remarks. Then they said they would give me a little more time and were leaving for a little bit, and they did!

I sat there for a while, unable to move. After 10 minutes or so, I began to wonder if they were coming back. 5 or 10 more minutes, and I guess I momentarily panicked, not becase I was afraid I'd waste away but because I didn't want my parents to find me like that!

The other thing about being tied up like that is I didn't have a lot else to do, so I would squirm as best as I could. Since my wrists were tied behind my back, I couldn't see the ropes or knots, but I tried to feel as much as I could. I made some progress getting my fingers to the knots, but all this caused the ropes to hurt a bit.

After a long time, I was able to actually work a few knots loose a bit and loosen the ropes, eventually freeing my hands and allowing me to get un-tied. I walked downstairs and outside where my friends were still there. They were astounded to see me and laughed when they saw the red marks on my wrists. They asked who un-tied me and I said I got away by myself. They seemed impressed!

This led to some un-intended consequences. It became a bit of a game. When we played it seemed like I would often be the one taken hostage or placed under arrest. I didn't mind. I stunk at sports and here was something I was good at! I was a challenge to them.

In one game we would have a team of kids who would go out and hide and another group responsible to round us up. They usually had me be in the team that went out first, then they would find me, bring me back to the base, and leave me tied up while they searched for the rest. I usually got out!

Then there was a day when one friend decided to get me good. When they found me and I thought they were going to tie me up, I put my hands behind me and he pulled out a pair of handcuffs and handcuffed me. He secured my feet with his bike chain! I don't pick locks so I was stuck!

Good childhood story--sounds very true.
