I agree, don't use zipties on bare skin, especially not when alone. They can apply too much pressure on a certain spot near the root of your thumb where your nerves are not well protected. In the worst case you can suffer permanent damage. There are differences from person to person, so some are lucky, but I wouldn't try my luck - esp. when alone and no quick release is possible (you lose some control of your hands if the nerves are irritated.)
Same problem with shoelace or any other material that's thin. Or rope if tied wrongly.
This looks totally different if you use some padding. Like terry-cloth wristbands or sth. similar.
Handcuffs should have a small button or sth. similar and when activated they are blocked from closing further. Research the brand name of the handcuffs before you buy a pair. Some cheap handcuffs have locks that jam easily.
