NAVAL CAPTURE
A TALE OF DESPAIR

Chapter One: Hopeless Fight
Fuerteventura, 1780

Sunlight comes, an elixir after so many black hours. The air becomes sweeter; birds soften the dawn with their chorus; we breathe more deeply as if permission has been bestowed. Already the greyness is gone, evaporated as fast as desert rain, and the heat of the day can already be felt. The violent waters of the sea were threatening yet inviting at the same time. The violet sky cast a malevolent glow over the churning waters. where the waves reached the shore white foam rose upwards as if to meet the sky.The lure and thrill of danger were inviting, it was a great and terrible beauty. Waves backed away from sand as if retreating from an unknown territory. The waters smoothed out and dragged whatever came in their way and took it with them as a sacrifice for the dark sea. the sky thundered with warnings as if the sea was about to spill with the heavy droplets descending from the sky. Even the wind didn't stay down, adding the finishing detail to the picture of violent delight.

The shipwreck by the beach, long-forgotten now, was shrouded in mist. It licked at the rotting skeleton bringing moisture to the deepening crevices. It had been a fine cutter in its day, a sail of finest linen and a sleek prow to slice the ocean. Now it looked for all the world like a movie set, somewhere in the distance there should be the sound of hooves, swords or an intellectual argument approaching along the sand. But this ship was quite forgotten in its demise, bit by bit it became apart of the waves that beat it so relentlessly. Another century and it wouldn't even be a memory.

Yet, in the horizon, could be seen three large ships, in a V-formation across the flat and distant sea, by the setting sun. Their wood was strengthened and its infrastructure seemed from the distant future. Each had a flag, standing on the highest pole, with a black background with a skeletal soul, the skull showing as well as two bones on each side. They were ramming at full speed towards the small battalion of ships that protected the small, remote island in the Atlantic.

'Pirates!' the Captain cried as the crew members all manned and marched quickly to the cannons as the ship started to turn fully starboard, though rather slowly, revealing all the threatening side cannons from all 4 decks of the ship. 'Prepare to fire! We must not let them destroy another one of our ships!' he continued, referring to the now shipwrecked legend. But it seemed futile psychologically as the ships in the horizon were marching on, getting larger and larger each time, almost like unstoppable knights of a deity.

Out of the expectation, a large sound erupted; a fierce, huge steel, black ball whistled above his head, and carried off a part of the precious, weakened stern. He turned around quickly. A second ball destroyed two of the frontal cannons faster than he could react. The huge ships in front of him were drawing closer and closer as a shadow was cast over the battalion. 'Open fire!' he ordered as the gunpowder crisped the air in front of him and gave everything they can. The enemy ships came to a halt and kept firing head on with little pause, as they steadily lost parts of their ship, which seemed to be made of a hidden metal inside of wood, even if that was most likely impossible.

One by one, the battalion of 10 ships came down with ease, as the water rising aboard each one, deck by deck, as the men hurried on and jumped in the sea, desperately trying to get to another nearby ship, even though most of them were driving away to get a better shot. The ships, now coming on full speed, started to turn around faster than any ship before, their strength driving the waves, sand splashing the sunken ships. Their horrid cannons of death displayed, as they stopped before the 4 remaining ships in front of them, who were stood, too scared to even fire, the remaining crew shaking.

It was as though a fist of orange flame had decided to punch it's way out of the main complex. Windows shattered. Smoke and fire rushed out. Thousands of pieces of glass and steel, a deadly rainfall, showered down. A huge bite had been taken out of the side and the roof of every ship left in the battalion as they sank down, one by one if they were not yet pulverised by the ungodly cannons. It was hard to believe it had done so much damage. A blinding flash came from the point where the cannonballs struck and a white cloud rose in the air.

'Come on! Let's go!' Amy, a slim, tender, young girl with straight, long and cleansed brown hair and hazel eyes, with tender and smooth skin, though roughened by work cried as the captain turned around from his ship, arms behind his back as it sank faster and faster, the cannons stopping to fire and letting the sea finish the satanic job.

'Never. This is my ship, and I'll never leave. I think everyone should know that it's okay to fail. So many people are afraid of failure they don't even try. Instead they join in with those who believe they are not capable of what they want to achieve. Nothing is impossible if you can think it you can do it. Most people have attained their greatest success just one step beyond their greatest failure. Those who try to do something and fail exceed more than those who do nothing and succeed. Every failure in life should be a stepping stone to build on. I can honestly say that I am most proud of the blessings that God has bestowed upon me. He's given me the vision to see that you can fall down, but still get back up. I will learn from my mistakes and have the opportunity to strengthen and improve the next thing I do. So go. Go and save yourselves.' he replied, as he smiled as the water engulfed him and the rest of his precious ship, that which he had taken care of since his early teens.

'Come on!' Jane, another tender though fit young girl with curly, brown hair and blue eyes continued, as the two went into the last standing lifeboat, and started to ram away steadily, now in the only living spotlight of the ships in front, who had long stopped firing as there was nothing left to shoot besides the rising, infinite sea of doom.

'Look! They're releasing boats!' she pointed, as Jane looked around and saw large, though smaller boats arrive towards the coastline at full speed, spreading fear into her nerves. Air rushing in from an open sea, fresh, clean, early morning air, brittle, transitory brightness, stale, dusty, rain drenched, winter's breath, chill, warm, river-smelling, sea breeze, sweet smelling air, tension quivered on the air, startled air. 'Oh no.. They're coming towards us.' she fears as one small boat come towards them, stopping as the hatch opened.

The pirate was as bald as he was tall, towering over even the tallest of us by six inches or more. His clothes were bright colours and the finest fabrics money can buy. At his side he carried a fine sword and about his neck he wore heavy gold adornments. He certainly looked successful, and not one to be trifled with. The pirate's hair hung in thick black dreadlocks about his haggard face. His skin was thick and bore the creased that come with age. He was thin but sinewy muscle on his limbs made him look strong nevertheless. His face bore scars and his nose had a chunk missing. His eyes were as dark as rum and followed you with sly calculation.

'Shiver me tembers! Look what we found!' he cried as he was laughing with his crew members poking out, smiling and cheering at their victory. The young girls looked at each other before the strong and scary figure.
'Well come on in! Unless you want to get destroyed like the rest of them!' he said, as they sharked their shoulders and after thinking of other solutions, this was the only one they could come to. They had lost. There was always hope. Hope is a bright star in a hopelessly dark universe. So they climbed up with the help of the man, as they were brought down in the deck.

'Welcome aboard!' he continued they all laughed and closed the hatch. 'Another victory for us! Now the island is finally ours!' he shouted as the girls looked at each other, Jane with tears in her eyes of the massacre.
'What are they going to do with us now?' Amy muttered to Jane, who was unsure and shook her shoulders in perplexity. It was a miracle they'd even survived such a horrid massacre. 'Let's hope they won't execute us, or worse.'
'There's much worse than execution, Amy.' she muttered back as she looked around the dense, though cleansed boat full of pirates, with the boat commander moving around, now half-drunk. 'Let's just hope for the best.' they both agreed as the loud and deafening roars of the pirates dried their ears as the silent sea was unresponsive to the cries of the once-powerful battalion that was ruthlessly obliterated by them.

To be continued....
War, war never changes.
