Lightboy's Legion - The Series

Postby Jason Toddman » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:35 am

This is a sequel to my fictional story, The Return of Magnaman, and is the sart of a new Superhero TuGs series featuring Lightboy (Chris12) as he forms his own superhero league.

LIGHTBOY’S LEGION

EPISODE 1: Lightboy’s New Sidekick

EPISODE 1 PART 1:

“Chris! Where the Hell *are* you?!” yelled an exceptionally angry Amy from the vicinity of the front door suddenly, awakening the boy in question from a quiet nap. “Get your skinny butt over here and tell this gray-skinned goon to let me in!”

Chris was only slowly awakening from his nap until these last few words were uttered. Then with a sudden epithet his mother would have been shocked to hear him utter, he awoke as quickly as he could run, got himself washed and dressed in just under five seconds (it would have faster if he didn’t have to wait for the water to leave the tap), and rushed to the front door in the blink of an eye. Too fast! A sonic boom crashed all through the house and half-deafened his girlfriend as he tried to stammer out an apology.

The apology would have to wait. At this very moment his girlfriend was being picked up bodily by a gray ten year old boy nearly twice Chris’s size, who apparently was about to heave her away like so much unwelcome trash.

“No! STOP!” exclaimed Chris - aka Lightboy - frantically to the larger boy, who despite his apparent tender age was built like a pro-wrestler. “Put her down! GENTLY!”

The gray boy complied at once, without any argument. Amy composed herself (she was shaking rather badly by now) as Light Boy immediately ran past Amy and confronted the other boy as if HE were the larger of the two.

“Never EVER touch her again!” Lightboy yelled at the gray boy, who hung his head mutely like a chastened puppy that had done its business in the wrong spot. “From now on, you let her in. You let her do whatever she wants! I don’t care if she *hits* me! You DO… NOT… TOUCH HER! UNDERSTAND?!?”

“Yes, sir,” replied the larger boy, whose voice even in a subdued whisper rumbled louder than Chris’s enraged yell.

He turned to apologize to Amy, and even Lightboy wasn’t fast enough to dodge when she slapped his face as hard as she could.

Chris looked up in panic – not at Amy but at Magnaboy. But Magnaboy did not react to protect Chris as he usually did with any real or imagined threat to him that he saw! Thank God Chris had made that directive about leaving her be if she hit him, or at best she’d be flying over the city line by now courtesy of Air Arm-toss! Lightboy hadn’t expected that admonition to be necessary quite as soon as *this* however.

“What’s the big idea?” Chris asked Amy in an aggrieved manner and a hurt look in his eyes. “That smarted!

“I haven’t seen hide nor hair or you ever since you came back from you last adventure with that… that… young hulk!” spat Amy. “You never have any time for me anymore!”

“I can’t help it!” exclaimed Chris self-defensively. “I have to watch him every minute or he starts tearing everything apart! He’s only quiet when I’m around him! I have to tie him up whenever I go to sleep or go to school, or he’d go berserk! Remember what happened when I tried letting him follow me to school, and Edward tried to tie me up as a prank? If I hadn’t been so fast and pulled him away from there, Magnaboy would’ve turned him into a bloody smear on the pavement!

“And when I’m home, he demands all my attention! I have to spend all my allowance AND my superhero stipend just to feed this big lug! He eats like a pig!”

“And he grows like a fungus, too!” added Amy unkindly. “He’s grown at least two inches since the last time I saw him – last week!”

Truth to tell, that was probably the biggest source of Chris’s resentment for his new charge. Or, more accurately, it was sheer envy. The young superhero was rather short for his age; at 14 he was only 4’ 4” and seemed not to be growing much at all… whereas this hulking prepubescent was already over 6’ and growing taller, wider, thicker, and more muscular by the day! And Magnaboy hadn’t even reached (or, more accurately, returned to) Puberty yet! Chris couldn’t help but feel that life was so unfair! What he wouldn’t give to grow like *that* for just a while!

“Well, he’s still a lot smaller than he was when he was an adult,” Chris pointed out, more to get over his self-pity than for any other reason. “He was about 7’ 7” if I remember correctly, before the Cross of Changes turned him into a little kid… uh, I mean, a *young* kid again. But he’s still as strong as a whale, and he’d be dangerous as Hell if I didn’t keep him passive. Besides, his memory got all screwed up too, remember? After he led us to his hideout, he fell asleep for a while. And since he woke up then he doesn’t remember anything he did since he really *was* ten years old. He’s completely wild and undisciplined… but he’s not evil anymore. He needs someone to take care of him and guide him so that he grows up better than he did the first time!”

“So you’re his mentor now?” asked Amy with an annoying edge to her voice. “That’s just great! You can teach him all about how to get himself into trouble, at least!”

That stung, even though she had a point. Part of his secret identity involved acting differently from his super-heroic persona – so in his everyday civilian identity he was a cheeky wiseass who was continually irritating the people around him. This often involved his getting into scrapes with older kids who had an overly great fondness for tying him up and tickle torturing him. And he couldn’t use his super-speed to escape such situations most times without exposing his secret identity to the world! Only, Amy, his friend Edward, and his older brother Tom and sister Sam knew that the mischievous Chris was also the superhero code-named Light Boy.

“Isn’t there something you can do?” Amy asked Chris more patiently as they held hands and began to walk together – pretending to be oblivious to the larger boy as he followed silently along behind them. “You’re not cut out to play the role of big brother – sorry, that was NOT a crack about your height, okay? But you’re only a kid yourself. You may be a superhero, but he’s no sidekick! He’s more like a… a lost puppy!”

Her only response was a muted growl… not from Lightboy but from the hulking child that walked along behind them.

“Doesn’t he ever talk?” asked Amy. “He hasn’t said more than two words since I got here.”

“He talks all right,” sighed Lightboy wearily. “When he’s alone with me I have to either gag him or tell him to shut up before he’ll quit chattering, and I don’t like doing either to him. He’s only quiet like this when *you’re* around, because he knows as well as I do that you don’t like him. But he’s actually pretty happy and talkative the rest of the time, just like a normal child... uhh… his age.”

Amy felt a pang of regret at this; she was far from being an unkind girl after all. She normally liked smaller children – except there was nothing small at all about Magnaboy. If only he didn’t insist on being around Chris every minute, she probably would have learned to like the huge boy by now too rather than resent him. “What do you and he talk about?” she finally asked, more to break the uncomfortable silence than because she really wanted to know, but the answer surprised her.

“Just about everything,” replied Chris. “He’s very bright; though he lacks the knowledge he had as an adult he’s still brilliant. He remembers everything he sees, hears, or reads. One reason why he’d be wasting his time at school is because he reads the online encyclopedia on the computer instead – and he not only reads something like 1000 words a minute but he remembers it all afterward. *I* can read faster, but I can’t recall it all as well as *he* does! Hell, he’s already helping me with my homework!”

“Helping you with it, or doing it for you?” Amy asked quietly, trying not to sound snide again but not completely succeeding. Chris’s silent hanging of his head and the blush of shame coming to his cheeks gave her the answer she sought in any case.

“Chris,” Amy said more quietly after an uncomfortable pause. “This just can’t go on this way. And I don’t just mean how you’re spending all your time trying to rehabilitate him. That’s actually something I’m proud of you for…” and here she gave Chris a tender kiss on the cheek. “But it’s not going to work out for one big important reason. He doesn’t have a will of his own anymore. He’s just an extension of your own will now. If you’re away from him too long, he goes on a rampage and looks for you – smashing everything I sight until he finds you (or you him) and calm him down again. However smart and strong he may be, he’s never, *ever* going to become a real man again – good or evil – until his total dependence on you is replaced by a will of his own again.”

Chris knew that Amy had a valid point here. Even when Magnaboy grew up and, over the next ten to twelve years, became Magnaman again, he would always be dependent on Chris to tell him what to do every minute of every day. He couldn’t even so much as feed himself until Chris told him to do so. Without Chris there to see to him, Magnaboy would eventually sicken and die – probably only after laying waste to half the Netherlands first.

At first Chris thought it would be cool to have a boy twice his size and roughly ten thousand times his strength around at his beck and call. But the first time he tried to have Magnaboy accompany him to school (carrying Chris’s book and backpack for him) was a total disaster. Chris was lucky he hadn’t been expelled or that Magnaboy hadn’t been subjected to a military jet strike like the monster from the old movie Tarantula.

Now he realized what an awesome, and burdensome, responsibility he had unwittingly taken on. Magnaman was a villain, but he had not been entirely evil. Being forced into virtual slavery to a small kid like him would undoubtedly have been galling to Magnaboy if he still had his adult memories. But he no longer did have them, and Chris could only feel sympathy rather than contempt for the confused, hulking young boy that had taken his old adversary’s place. It was almost like he had undergone a lobotomy, and Chris decided than even having Magnaman back as he was before was far preferable to this huge child’s continued utter dependence on Chris.

But how could he restore Magnaboy’s independence of will that the Cross of Changes had taken from him? Chris no longer had the magical artifact, and would have had no idea how to use it to reverse what had happened to him in any case.

“Maybe one of your friends has an idea,” suggested Amy. “Doesn’t one of them have some knowledge of mystical artifacts like the cross? Maybe he could…”

“You mean Cricks? Naw. I asked him about that ages ago. He doesn’t…”

The special communicator in Chris’s pocket disguised as an ordinary cell phone began to bleep for his attention. Casting a look of apology to Amy, Chris picked up the device to answer. The image on the tiny view-screen was none other than that of Cricks himself.

“I have good news,” Cricks immediately announced. “I think I know of a way to make Magnaboy less dependent on you. Meet me at these coordinates with Magnaboy. I’ll explain when you get here. Over and out.”

Crick’s image disappeared, to be replaced with a set of GPS coordinates. The location seemed rather strange… somewhere deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle! But Chris was so desperate to be rid of his problem bodyguard that he didn’t think to be suspicious.

Somewhere thousands of miles away, the villain Reaper smiled in satisfaction. “Good work, Dark Cricks,” he said to his companion – the artificial and evil duplicate of the real Cricks. “You hacked into their comm. system beautifully. Now let us prepare the trap!”

Yes Jason. But do you think you are the first one ever to have made a story with an evil clone of one of my most popular main characters before? Been done on other site nontugs related.

Did it ever occur to you that there may be a very good reason for that which does not involve coincidence? :D

Whatever you say, Darth.
This segment is shorter than I intended as I ran out of time. Sorry.

EPISODE 1 PART 2

Were he alone, Chris could have made the rendezvous with Cricks literally in a second. Saddled with Magnaboy however, the journey to the Amazon took somewhat longer. True, Magnaman could run (and swim) amazingly fast by human standards – perhaps 200 mph for the first and just under 100 mph for the second – but by Lightboy’s standards it would have been like escorting a snail to the mall! So instead he bundled Magnaboy into the flying car Cricks had built for him for purposes such as this, settled himself in the pilot’s seat, and the two of them flew to the Amazon… leaving Amy to wave goodbye.

The car was capable of flying at about five times the speed of sound, but at three hours it was still an agonizingly slow trip for the impatient Lightboy, who was used to doing things at light-speed. To pass the time he tried to initiate a conversation with Magnaboy – wishing the hulking youth really was the chatterbox Chris had made him out to be when talking to Amy. Though he had been truthful about Magnaboy’s intelligence, the truth of the matter was that Magnaboy was about as interesting to talk to as a stump; speaking only when spoken to and then only sufficiently to answer any question put to him or acknowledge any order given to him (such as doing Chris’s homework for him – just as Amy had correctly surmised).

In any case, a dog would have been vastly more stimulating company than Magnaboy now was. He could recite the Magna Carta or the Declaration of Independence accurately word for word upon request, but asking for something simple such as his opinion of the weather produced nothing more than a simple grunt. Anything involving any sort of independent thought (such as a halfway intelligent conversation) was now simply beyond him. Chris gave it up as hopeless; deciding he’d rather have the adult Magnaman for company rather than this hulking automation; at least Magnaman – for all his arrogance – was a skilled conversationalist.

Chris turned his thoughts instead on the irony that, as a superhero, he had a license to pilot this flying car, but in his civilian identity he was considered too young to drive a regular car that practically crawled at a snail’s pace (by his standards) along the ground!

Following the GPS signal on his cellphone communicator, Chris reached the rendezvous point in the heart of the Amazon. He had wondered how he could land this vehicle inside a thick jungle, but he need not have worried. The rendezvous point turned out to be a cleared space about a hectare in extent in front of what appeared to be the runs of an ancient temple from an as-yet unknown civilization. As the flying car could descend vertically and land like a helicopter (only more quickly, smoothly , and safely – no spinning rotors), it was a simple matter to land practically at the front door, where Chris could see the familiar form of Cricks awaiting him.

Chris hurried out of the flying car (letting Magnaboy clamber out on his own and follow as best as he could) to greet Cricks only a second after he’d shut the motor off. “Have you really found a way to make it so that Magnaboy doesn’t need to be watched 24 hours a day?” Chris asked his mentor eagerly.

“It’s a simple matter actually, my padawan,” Cricks said affectionately to the young boy as he tousled Chris’s hair – apparently oblivious to the fact that Chris *hated* that! “Let’s let your charge catch up to us, and then the two of you follow me.”

“What *is* this place, anyway?” asked Chris, looking all around as they entered the huge temple and stopped in front of a statue of some demonic-looking monstrosity. It had a body that looked even more muscular than Magnaman’s had been, and had a monstrous head with a wide, gaping mouth full of fangs and huge horns sprouting from its head. “And what is *that* horrible looking thing supposed to be?”

“This was the ancient Incan temple to the demon Shoga, and this delightful entity is Shoga itself,” replies Cricks. “Not a mere statue mind you, but Shoga itself, trapped here by a magical spell of some kind that prevents it from moving and acting for itself… sort of the same fix Magnaboy is in, only worse.”

“Sounds like that’s just as well if it’s a demon,” replies Chris. “What’s this got to do with fixing Magnaboy here?”

“Well, nothing really,” replies Cricks. “It’s just that I happened to be here when studying Shoga gave me the idea of how to cure Magnaboy. Listen carefully and do as I say.”

Cricks quietly explained to Chris the simple procedure that needed to be done. It was so simple that Chris marveled that he had not thought of doing something like it himself. It couldn’t possibly be *this* simple, could it? Only one way to find out…

Chris turned to Magnaboy. When he was sure he had the hulking youth’s attention, he spoke loudly as Crick told him to do and said, ”From now on, for the rest of your life, I want you to act as if you had a mind of your own!”

For a brief moment, the temple around them almost seemed to reverberate with Chris’s words and rumble in response.

Magnaboy seemed unchanged at first. But then, after of moment of staring at Chris in mute incomprehension, his eyes blinked rapidly and his eyes shone with an intelligence such as they had not revealed since the day Magnaman became Magnaboy. The boy remained a boy physically of course; the age reversal could be undone only with the passage of time. But for the first time, Magnaboy looked at everything around him with keen interest. And then an amazing thing happened.

For the very first time, Magnaboy asked a question.

It was merely a “Where am I?” But it was a question! And only someone who can think for themselves can ask a question!

Chris was jubilant, but he wanted to be sure the cure really took. “Hop up and down on one foot,” he asked Magnaboy, thinking of a scene from the movie Terminator II.

Magnaboy looked at Chris in puzzlement, and then asked his second question - “Why?” – while making no attempt to comply.

“YES!” exclaimed Chris in victory, thrusting a fist in the air joyfully. But then he thought of something else and immediately calmed down. Now that Magnaboy could think for himself again, would he be a good person – or an evil one?

“Can you remember who you are?” he asked Magnaboy.

“I… I am Elric Denro,” replied Magnaboy. “I am a mutant. I’m ten years old. I… I seem to be lost. I don’t know where I am. May I go home now?”

“Sure, kid, go on home,” Cricks suddenly said before Chris could say anything further. “It’s about 3000 miles due north. Quite a trek even for you, but you’ll make it okay.”

Magnaboy nodded in acknowledgement and promptly ran out of the temple and onward in the jungle beyond. Within moments he was completely out of sight.

“Why the hell did you do that?” asked a puzzled Chris as he turned around to face Cricks, only to discover that Cricks was not alone. Standing right beside him was the hulking form of the villainous Reaper.

Before even the quick-witted and even quicker moving Lightboy could react, Reaper cast a spell. Suddenly chains erupted from the ground and wrapped themselves around Chris’s body from head to toe as if they were alive. Far faster than a mischievous boy encasing a Barbie doll in duct-tape, the chains trapped his arms to his side and fastened his legs firmly together. Then, before Chris could vibrate he molecules of his body and phase through the chains to escape, they constricted and squeezed the breath out of him (like the grand-daddy of all anacondas) while simultaneously he felt a shock which completely stunned him (like the grand-daddy of all Tasers). The strength suddenly gone from his body, Chris fell limply to the temple floor.

He looked up at Cricks, and suddenly realized that this was not the real Cricks at all but another one of Reaper’s evil mechanical duplicates of Cricks. But then his attention was diverted away from both Cricks and the menacing form of Reaper – and even away from his own great danger - to the statue beyond his two enemies. The statue of the demonic entity Shoga… was MOVING!

Shoga was ALIVE!!!

Good: I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one who could see them.
Here's the rest of Episode 1; and - uhh - try not to get too mad Cricks!

EPISODE 1 PART 3

Chris yelled in panic as he saw the fifteen-foot tall figure of Shoga begin to move… sluggishly at first, but more normally by the second. It was flexing its massive fingers as if trying to warm them up – or was thinking of throttling somebody.

Reaper turned to look at the statue. Chris could not see Reaper’s face behind his mask, but he was certain that reaper was feeling satisfaction rather than surprise or fear. This was confirmed by Reaper’s next words. “Ahhh. Shoga is coming alive. He looks a little confused though. Dark Cricks, go over to Shoga and greet him, won’t you?”

Dark ricks obeyed with alacrity, bounding over to the pedestal where the stone behemoth crouched, watching him approach. Dark Crick held out his hand in greeting, as if trying to extend a handshake. “Welcome to the land of the living. Lord Reaper greets you,” said Cricks with a friendly smile.

Shoga hesitantly extended its huge hand toward Dark Cricks’s hand and clasped it. Then, in a somewhat faster motion, Shoga hauled a surprised Dark Cricks up by his arm, pulled him close to its own massive head, and proceeded to eat him.

Liquid flew everywhere, although rather than blood it was a thicker liquid with the color and consistency of buttermilk. This did not seem to bother Shoga however, as it tore apart the limp body of Dark Cricks like a diner tearing apart a lobster at a seafood restaurant. Chris, still trapped in the magical chains, shuddered and closed his eyes to the sight, and gritted his teeth against the horrible sounds of tearing of flesh, breaking of bones, and that awful chewing as Shoga had its breakfast!

It was all Chris could do to keep from losing his. Had Dark Cricks been human, with human blood splattering everywhere, Chris would have heaved up for sure.

Reaper was roaring with laughter. “That was funny! If only that was the *real* Cricks! I’d love to see that after all the trouble that he’s given me!”

Reaper turned his attention to Chris. “Lighten up, kid. It’s not like that was the *real* Cricks! It was just a soulless copy of him! What’s the matter, Sonny Boy? Don’t you like my latest achievement? After all, *you’re* the one that brought Shoga to life!”

“Huh?! ME?!?” Chris asked in astonishment; opening his eyes again and facing Reaper – doing his best to ignore the sight and sound of Shoga’s horrible repast. “How’d I do that?”

“You haven’t figured it out? Simple, simple! Shoga was under a spell similar to what the Cross of Changes did to Magnaman’s mind. And like the cross, only an innocent could invoke the spell and break it again. So when you shouted out your final command to Magnaboy to think for himself again… Shoga heard and obeyed you too!”

Chris felt despair. It *was* all a trick. Why was he *always* falling for tricks?!

“So now what?” Chris asked numbly, unable to think of any other response.

“So now Shoga finishes his breakfast,” replied Reaper calmly as Shoga stripped a leg bone of its flesh before tossing it away. “That will help revive his strength. Then he’ll have his lunch, which is where *you* come in. Once he has had his fill, he will be at full power. And then he will be ready.”

Shoga acted like it was choking; then it spit out a hip bone.

“I guess even Shoga found Cricks a bit hard to swallow,” commented Reaper.

“You’re going to use that demon to try to control the world, aren’t you?” asked Chris contemptuously.

“Nope, not at all,” said Reaper just as a dimensional portal appeared right behind him. “I’m going to send Shoga to Zerocurew as a token of my esteem!”

The way he said that made Chris suspicious.

“You say that like Shoga is going to fight Zerocurew,” Chris ventured.

“He is!” replied Reaper levelly. “Right now tough, Shoga wouldn’t stand a chance. But once he eats a tasty young goody two-shoes superhero like you, his power will be – for a brief time at least – magnified a hundred times!”

“If that’s so, why’d you send Magnaboy away?” Chris couldn’t help but ask.

“Well, for one thing that hulk might be a bit too much for Shoga to handle,” Reaper told him. “Second, I may have use for his super strength someday. And third, Zerocurew wants me to kill him… and I have better uses for that kid. For some reason Magnaboy’s presence inhibits Zerocurew from using his full power in our dimension. I suspect it is in my own best interests if this continues for now. So I sent him off out of harm’s way while Shoga has you for lunch. This way, no one will have any influence over Magnaboy until I can find a way to enlist him on *my* side!”

Reaper looked at Shoga, which seemed to have finished eating Cricks and was now looking their way. “I guess it’s ready for its next course, and I’d rather it not be me! Once he finishes with you he’ll step through the dimensional gate and have a little one-on-one with Zerocurew. Have a nice lunch! Tootles!” Reaper waved a huge hand languidly goodbye, and abruptly vanished from the scene.

Lightboy looked past where Reaper was standing to see Shoga looking at him with intense interest. Then the 15-foot-tall demonic entity clambered down from its pedestal and slowly began to stalk toward him with him, ground-devouring strides with its knuckles dragging along the ground. Frantically the helpless hero attempted to free himself from the chains, but it was no use. They kept shocking him and squeezing him, and movement of any kind was totally impossible.

Shoga reached his side and reached down. Chris tightly shut his eyes to block out the sight of his last moments and steeled himself for the end.

There was a loud, sickening *CRUNCH!* and a squall of pain! And then there was a roaring bellow even louder than the agonized cry had been.

Chris’s eyes flew open upon realization that he was feeling no pain – except from the chains, anyway – and beheld an astonishing sight. The form of Shoga lay sprawling half prone on the floor at the far side of the temple, struggling to get erect, while the familiar form of Magnaboy stood directly between Shoga and Chris in a defensive posture - his huge fists poised ready to fight. Magnaboy was facing Shoga, but turned to take a quick look backwards at Chris. “You all right, kid?” asking the larger child.

“Uhh, yeah!” replied an amazed Chris. “I… LOOK OUT!!!”

There was little need for a warning. Though Shoga came on with the speed and power of a freight train it was with about as much stealth as well, and Magnaboy was braced for the impact when the demon reached him. The sound of the collision between the two was deafening, and Magnaman and Shoga began to struggle with ferocious growls from each. The force of Shoga’s rush send Magnaboy backwards – his braced feet dragging along the floor creating furrows in the stone two inches deep. But a helpless Chris lay directly behind Magnaboy, and the hulking gray youth tripped over Chris’s legs.

Magnaboy was sent sprawling backwards, and for a moment Chris feared he’d be crushed underneath his falling weight. But Magnaboy turned his sprawling fall into a backflip, caught his weight on his massive arms, and kicked out with his legs. The onrushing head of Shoga caught the impact of two huge feet driven by those muscular legs with the impact of pile drivers, and was sent reeling backwards again. Meanwhile, Magnaboy manage to regain his feet without falling on any part of Chris’s helpless form.

While the monster was distracted, Magnaboy knelt down beside Chris, grabbed a portion of the magical chains that bund the hero, and began to pull. Ordinary steel chain would have snapped apart at once, but these magical chains were far stronger than steel. But Magnaboy did not give up; with huge muscles bulging and sweat running down his brow, Magnaboy strained and pulled at the chains with all his considerable might. For a moment his efforts seemed futile, but then the links gave way – making a noise that sounded more like a scream of mortal agony rather than the parting of cold metal links. Magnaboy began to uncoil the links from around Chris, but this was not necessary; once one link was severed, the entire chain fell apart like it was made from loose grains of sand and totally disintegrated.

Magnaboy helped a still dazed and weak Chris to his feet, but was unable to do more to help him before Shoga recovered and renewed its onslaught. Then Magnaboy steered Chris toward the exit to the temple and gave him a gentle nudge in that direction before turning to meet Shoga’s new onslaught.

Chris staggered off a few steps, but then stopped and turned. Magnaboy was fighting Shoga with all his might, but the two were too evenly matched; the fight could still go either way. Were it Magnaman Shoga fought, it would have been defeated easily. But Magnaboy had only a fraction of his adult form’s size and power, although he’d been regaining some of it at an alarming rate. For the first time, Chris wished he’d been regaining his size and strength even faster than he had been.

Suddenly Magnaboy was sent sprawling on his back by a powerful blow that would have crushed an armored tank into tinfoil. A huge hand reached out, great talons extended to disembowel the youth before he could regain his feet and resume fighting…

With a (frankly not very impressive) yell, Chris gathered his energy and rushed forward as fast as he currently could. By his usual standards this was strictly turtle speed; a mere 7000 miles per hour. But even a body as small as Chris’s hurtling into something at that speed has enormous power, and Shoga was sent reeling as if Magnaboy himself had hit it.

With a roar of rage, Shoga was sent staggering back… back… and on right through the still-open dimensional doorway behind it that Reaper had created. Shoga fell through the doorway and disappeared. Its function fulfilled, the doorway itself shrank to a dot and disappeared a moment later.

The two boys looked at each other wordlessly for a moment; neither of them terribly steady on their feet after their recent experiences.

“Thanks,” Magnaboy and Chris said to the other at virtually the same moment. Then each blinked simultaneously and then began to laugh… Chris softly and Magnaboy bellowing like Lieutenant Worf after a night guzzling blood-wine.

“You came back,” Chris quietly said to Magnaboy with a voice that clearly expressed his disbelief. “Even though you didn’t have to! Why?”

“I was confused when I left,” Said Magnaboy hesitantly. “But once I had a moment to think, and I began to remember things that had happened, I realized that I was lost and alone in a world not my own. I am not from this world, but another. I don’t remember now how I got here, but I realized suddenly that you’d just done something to help me. That made you the only friend I knew about in this whole world. So I came back to thank you for helping me, and to see if I could somehow repay the favor.”

“I think you’ve already done that,” replied Chris, still shaking a little from his close call. “So, where do you go from here?” He said this not from concern that Magnaboy might become the menace that Magnaman was, but because now he was honestly concerned for the gray boy’s wellbeing.

“I don’t know,” Magnaboy replied with a shrug of his muscular shoulders. “I have nowhere *to* go. This world is alien to me. Everything here seems as fragile to me as tissue paper. I have no family. No friends. No home…”

“You do now,” said Chris with sudden determination. “You saved my life just now. The least I can do is to help you to find a life of your own!”

“You’re a superhero, aren’t you?” said Magnaboy. “I think I’d like to be one. Would you be willing to have me along as a sidekick?”

“No,” replied Chris simply.

Magnaboy’s face fell, and Chris decided not to let his joke go any further. “But I’d love to have you as a partner, and a friend!” he continued, holding out his hand for a shake.

Magnaboy’s face lit up and he and Chris shook hands.

Lightboy was lucky; his hand wasn’t broken but it was mighty sore for the rest of the day.

As for Shoga, lacking the extra power devouring Lighttboy would have given it, it was no match for Zerocurew at all; it becamed Zerocurew's favorite new torture slave.

EPISODE 2: A League of His Own

EPISODE 2 PART 1

After the incident with Reaper, Lightboy decided that the first order of business was to report the matter to Cricks and the other heroes at their new (and Magnaman’s old) headquarters. He also wanted to let the others know that Magnaboy was restored to a normal level of self-awareness and independence and would be working with them from now on to help make up for his former evil ways.

When Lightboy attempted to use his communicator to call in however, all he got was static. Concerned, Lightboy decided to report in person. He chafed at the slowness of the air-car (a mere five times the speed of sound) as he flew it from the depths of the Amazon jungle to the new headquarters – located in the heart of the northern Maine wilderness. In fact, he seethed with impatience, but he wouldn’t leave Magnaboy alone to shift for himself under these circumstances – not after the hulking youth had just saved his life.

It didn’t occur to Lightboy until later that Magnaboy’s mere presence – and consequently slowing him down – had saved his life (or at least his freedom) a second time in one day!

The first hint (after the failure to communicate with Cricks) that something was terribly wrong was visible from many kilometers away in the form of a massive cloud of dense smoke coming the heart of the wilderness where the headquarters was located. Lightboy was appalled, and couldn’t wait any longer. He set the air-car down at the first decent cleared space he could find, asked Magnaboy to catch up as best he could, and ran the rest of the way in something like 0.001 seconds.

The site of the secret headquarters was now an inferno. Thinking fast and moving even faster, Lightboy raced in a circle all around the blaze several million times in about two minutes. This created cyclonic winds that snuffed out all of the flames, cooled down the red-hot debris to room temperature, and blew all the dense smoke far away. Then, with the wreckage now safe to approach, Lightboy began looking for survivors.

Some of the debris was light enough to lift away at super speed, but some of it was much too massive for the small superhero to shift even with super-speed kicks. Fortunately, the powerful Magnaboy lumbered into view about this time; he was far slower than Lightboy but was still far faster than a normal human being. Assessing the situation, Magnaman use his vast superhuman strength to clear away debris that would have strained the capacities of even the largest, most modern earth-moving equipment.

What Lightboy found at first was not encouraging: the battered and charred remains of James Rolls, Chase Hansen Ricks, Chad Rockwell, Jenna Firemage, and… scariest of all… Cricks himself – all ten of him. The bodies looked as though they had undergone very gruesome tortures while they were still alive, and Lightboy was certain that only the villainous Reaper himself could be responsible for such a terrible thing.

Although there seemed scant hope to find anyone alive in the midst of this devastation, Lightboy kept looking – vowing to give all of his former comrades a decent burial at least. Silently, not wishing to intrude on Lightboy’s privacy, Magnaboy simply helped him clear away debris and find more dead bodies.

“You won’t find anyone else!” Lightboy suddenly heard a young, unfamiliar voice say behind him.

Astonished, Lightboy turned around. Facing him was a boy about his own age but (like most boys his age) considerably larger. This boy was about 5’ 9” (1.73 meters) and quite slender at perhaps 130 pounds (59 kilograms), with green eyes and light brown hair. He had buck teeth and looked somewhat like a nerd. He wore nothing save for a garishly-colored set of speedos. He was hovering in mid-air three feet (one meter) above the floor; apparently effortlessly. Obviously he was no ordinary passer-by.

“Who are you?” asked Lightboy tensely. “Did you have something to do with this?”

“I am Astral Boy, and not directly,” replied the geeky youth calmly; answering both of Lightboy’s questions. “The person responsible is not Reaper as you are surmising. A different entity is involved; a Godlike entity named Zanev. It seems that the being you know as Cricks was an escaped mental patient and trouble-maker from another world, and he was banished from this world…”

“That’s a dirty lie!” yelled Lightboy in pure outrage as he launched himself at virtual light-speed at this nerd in order to make him take back what he had just said. The boy was unfazed by this attack however, and unaffected by it as well. He made no effort to dodge aside. Inside, the leaping Lightboy – attempting a super-speed full-body tackle – went right through the youth as if he were not even there and crashed headlong into the wall beyond. Luckily for Lightboy he was invulnerable to all impacts when moving fast (he’d had killed himself long since were this not the case) and was not hurt either – just a trifle dazed and confused.

“I am not actually here in the flesh,” Astral Boy tells Lightboy. “And what I have told you is true. Zanev banished Cricks from this world; presumably for all time. These manifestations of Crick’s will died when this happened,” he continues, indicating the dead bodies that Lightboy had already discovered.

“And what happened to Kyle, Nuclearo, and all the others?” snapped Lightboy. “Did this Zanev being destroy them too?”

“Zanev does not harm the innocent; only those who disobey certain rules in the world he has created,” replies Astral Boy. “The others were not harmed by Zanev. But the moment Zanev left, the evil being that you know as Reaper came. I do not know if he somehow informed Zanev of Crick’s true identity or simply learned of Zanev’s intervention and took immediate advantage; more likely the second, though. In any case, he appeared here and attacked the others while they were all disoriented from what happened to Cricks and his manifestations. He used the Cross of Changes to deprive them all of their powers, and their memories as well. They are now being held prisoner by an ally of Reaper’s known as Professor Ecstasy, as am I.”

“Professor Ecstasy?” asks a puzzled Lightboy. “I think I’ve heard of him. He’s that fella who likes to perform bizarre experiments on people he believes have wronged him somehow. I didn’t know he has a grudge against any of *us* though, since we’ve never dealt with him ourselves!”

“Reaper has convinced him that you and the others have wronged him somehow,” replies Astral Boy.

“How do you know all this anyway?” asked Magnaboy.

“I am certain psychic powers when I am… tied up,” replies Astral Boy with a tone of embarrassment. “When my natural body is securely bound so that I cannot move at all, I am able to form an astral body – which is what you are seeing now. With it, I can teleport anywhere I want, go through solid objects, turn invisible, read minds and influence them sometimes, and a few other things. However, I am like a ghost – I cannot affect or be affected by solid objects. This is a result of one of the professor’s experiments, although thankfully he is unaware of this as yet. He does not know I am in communication with you to ask you for your help.

“Your friends Nuclearo, Boundgal, Naughtynats, and the others are captives in the same place where I am. They have lost their powers and have n memory that they ever had any. You must rescue them – and, please, rescue me too – before it is too late! But please be careful. The professor has a number of powerful beings under his direct control and they will oppose you once they know you are coming.”

“Me and my big buddy will do our best!” Lightboy assures the floating youth with a quick glance at Magnaboy. “Just tell us where we can find you.”

“I am at the…” begins Astral Boy. Then his eyes widen in sudden alarm. “Oh, no! The professor’s found me. He’s releasing the bonds that enable me to maintain my astral form. Find me! Please! I’m at the…”

Suddenly Astral Boy vanished as if he were never there.

“That’s not good!” said Magnaboy with a deadpan face. “What do we do now? I think I know of this Professor Ecstasy guy, and it’s pretty scary. He’s got an army of minions that even the two of us may have trouble handling by ourselves.”

“I think it’s time I called in some help with a few of my online friends,” said Lightboy.

EPISODE 2 PART 2

Lightboy used his communicator to call various other kids his age that he had met online but had never met in person before. They all had powers of some kind, although they were as yet not as skilled at using theirs as Lightboy was in using his. They had chatted online many times and role played being heroes with Chris (a real hero) and wishing they could use their power to help people like Lightboy did,

Now they would finally get their chance.

“Is this a good idea?” Magnaboy asked him when Lightboy explained what he was doing.
“They may have powers, but do they have the experience and training it takes to function as a team? Because there’s certainly no time to train them for a combat situation now.”

“Maybe not, but they’ve go heart and they want to help,” replied Lightboy. “And with the others out of commission, they’re all we have. Besides you and me, they’re the only guys with superpowers still unharmed and free.”

Magnaboy was still doubtful, but this was partially because *everyone* else seemed as frail as tissue-paper compared to him. Lightboy could at least see danger coming with his ultra-fast reflexes and dodge it; but most of these other newcomers would be vulnerable. However, he admitted even to himself that even he and Lightboy were unlikely to be able to take on Professor Ecstasy’s minions by themselves.

Lightboy made some calls and arrangements were made. He would pick up each of the young heroes at their homes in his air-car (which, even with Magnaboy aboard, was spacious enough to seat another ten people comfortably) and hold a meeting with them when they were all assembled together.

They first went to London, and picked up Ben Harris, otherwise known as “Big Ben” but code-named Big Boy. He was only 12 and little larger (5 feet or 1.5 meters tall) than Lightboy, but he had a power Light Boy totally envied; he could adjust his size by any amount he wanted up to a height of fifty feet (just over 15 meters). His body proportions remained the same, as did his relative strength. So when his height was increased by its maximum of 10, his strength (like his weight) was multiplied by 1000! This was still far less than Magnaboy’s strength (which was at least 10 times greater still) but his larger size gave Ben other advantages which helped to compensate. In addition, his skin and muscles became much harder than normal, giving him extra toughness as well when he was giant sized.

The next stop was Luxembourg, where Lightboy picked up Mike Roe. Mike was a large (6’ 3” or 1.9 meters) 15-year-old boy with the opposite power to Ben’s: he could shrink himself down to any size he wanted down to that of an insect! Like Ben, his strength level also changed when his size did, but it went *up* rather than *down* as you would expect. At his minimum size, he was actually ten times stronger than normal, and punch delivered at 10 times full strength from a fist no bigger than a pinhead can really HURT!! He could also fly like a bee as well as sting like one at his minimum size, and could easily dodge most attempts to harm him. His body, like Ben’s, also grew incredibly hard when at its furthest from normal size. His codename was now Micro Boy.

After this, Lightboy made his way to Asia. Along the way he rendezvoused with the third boy on his list, who had flown all the way from Cape Town in South Africa to meet him. This was Jubal, a 13-year-old black boy whose power was to convert himself into various forms of energy. This enabled him to fly as fast as Lightboy could run, project a protective force shield around himself or others, and cast bolts of lightning or blasts of utter hear and cold. This came at a cost though; he had to eat a lot in order to replace mass lost by such energy expenditures. But though he could eat as much as a classroom full of boys his age, he was actually slender (though not gaunt unless he used too much energy too quickly) and athletic. Jubal (code-named Energy Kid) entered the air-car as a beam of light and materialized in his seat within as if he had teleported himself there.

Lightboy stopped in Jerusalem and picked up Isaiah, a tall (6’ 6” or 2 meters) 16-year-ld boy who was very muscular (over 240 pounds or 110 kilograms). His appearance would make one think he was very strong, and he was – but only by normal human standards. His real power was to be able to stretch himself to many times his normal length; so much so that he could pick up an object several hundred feet from where he was standing and bring it back to him. His body was so elastic that he could make himself paper-thin or so narrow that he could slip through a keyhole (though of course this would take far more time than it would take Mike Roe to do it). His strength decreased the more he stretched, however. Even when stretched, his body was like strong rubber and not easily damaged. His code-name was Stretch.

The air-car went on to Calcutta to pick up another passenger, who did not seem to be at the rendezvous point when the others arrived. He was already aboard before anyone in the air-car knew it, because he was invisible. Casper could make himself invisible and undetectable not only to the eye but to the ears as well. He was also undetectable by radar or video-cameras. He remained solid however; he could not become intangible to walk through walls for example but could (unlike the mysterious Astral Boy) move solid objects as easily as he normally could. He could also render anything he could carry invisible as well while he held it. Casper was code-named Invisible Lad.

From there the air-car went to Japan, and picked up Fumio, a slender, handsome youth of 13 whose power was to temporarily duplicate the form and powers of any one other person he touched for up to 24 hours. He could only imitate one person at a time, but that duplication would be so perfect that he even acquired all of that person’s memories and knowledge. Fumio retained his own mind and personality during such transformations, however. His major limitation was that he could not duplicate the same person more than once a day or so; longer if that person was quite powerful. He also could not retain more powerful forms as long.

The moment Fumio finished introducing himself (code-name: Copy Boy), he asked to make a test of his power’s limits. Fumio touched Magnaboy lightly on the shoulder (with the other’s consent first of course) and became a perfect duplicate of him. A very useful power, thought Magnaboy (who was very impressed). Unfortunately, it turned out that Fumio would be able to duplicate Magnaboy’s body and powers only once a month, for only a couple of hours at a time by his own estimate. Magnaboy was just *too* powerful – he was virtually at the upper limit of what Fumio could duplicate at all! In fact, the sheer strain of maintaining Magnaboy’s form was so great that Fumio immediately dropped it to regain his own form so that he could still be useful when it came time to perform the rescue mission. Then he would simply copy the form of the most powerful person around – whether friend or foe - other than Magnaboy.

“How come there aren’t any girls in your new league?” asked Micro Boy with some puzzlement. “You’re not gay, are you?”

“No!” replied an outraged Chris. “Girls are definitely not out of my league. It’s just that I – I – uhhh – Amy would kill me if I brought any other girls into the league and not her!”

“What powers does *she* have?” asked Invisible Lad with evident puzzlement (though it was hard to tell because no one else could read the expression on his invisible face).

“Just to make Lightboy really happy or really miserable,” replied Magnaboy before even the quick witted Chris could think of a better face saving reply. Everyone laughed at this, but in a comradely, understanding way rather than a derisive one. Lightboy decided that was as good (and as truthful) an answer as any and with relief let the matter drop.

Lightboy’s new League was assembled. The problem now was: where were Professor Ecstasy and his captives to be found? Lightboy and his friends didn’t have a clue! None of them had psychic powers, and without a lead, their rescue mission would not progress very far at all!

Fortunately, the lead Lightboy was counting on literally materialized right beside him in the form of Astral Boy. “The professor wanted to perform some more experiments on me,” Astral Boy reported. “He is trying to develop new ways of giving himself super-human powers, but uses other people as his guinea pigs. Even when he succeeds, he is too afraid to perform the necessary procedures on himself. Probably because most of his successes are radically altered in form and scarcely even look human. He is still trying to give me certain superpowers; unaware he has already succeeded in my case. He has chained me back up and locked me away for now; which is fortunate for us all as I cannot use my Astral Body otherwise.”

“His keeping you immobile is the one way you gain perfect freedom of movement?” asks Fumio. “That’s ironic!”

“Never mind that now,” exclaims Magnaboy in his usual impatient tone. “Tell us where we can find you before something happens to make you vanish again.”

“The Professor was originally based in Britain,” replies Astral Boy. “But things got way too hot for him over there after he turned Prince Charles into some kind of six-foot-tall humanoid beaver. Right now he has his base in the middle of the Australian outback. Follow me and I will guide you.”

With this Astral Boy stood up in his seat and flew away at great speed right through the front windshield (without affecting it in the least) as if it were not even there. He flew point in front of the air-car (which had already changed course for Australia), flying fast enough to stay ahead of it but not so fast that he flew out of sight of its occupants.

“If this professor is based out in the middle of nowhere, he’s certain to see us coming,” Magnaboy warned Lightboy. “There’s no way we can go in by stealth. We’re bound to have a fight on our hands as soon as we arrive.”

“I already thought of that,” replied Lightboy. “But we’re not going to fly straight in. As soon as we get within a hundred miles (160 KM) of where Astral Boy says the professor is, I’m landing this air-car and proceeding alone. I work best alone anyway.”

“What the Hell did you bring us here for then?” snapped Ben; misunderstanding what Light Boy was saying, “To cheer you on?”

“I don’t mean I’m going to try to take on Professor Ecstasy and his goons and rescue his captives by myself,” replied Lightboy as calmly as he could (which wasn’t easy for him as he was rather excitable himself). “I mean I’m going to scout out the situation and try to cause a diversion while the rest of you move on in with a frontal assault!”

“Oh!” replied Ben lamely, blushing slightly in embarrassment.

Astral Boy seemed to be fully aware of Lightboy’s plan, for he set down in a plain just outside Alice Springs. “I’ll come with you,” he told Light Boy. “I can implant instructions to find the professor’s hideout to the others as they follow while keeping up with you. I can travel as fast as you can and turn invisible and phase through solid objects besides. But I won’t be much help in a fight, since I’m not solid.”

“You’ll still be an extra pair of eyes and that’s good enough for me,” Lightboy assured him. “Let’s go!”

And the two immediately vanished from the view of the others – one with a whoosh, the other silently – who were left to catch up as best they could in the air-car or on their own. Fumio had copied Lightboy’s form before that hero had left; not to play catch up but so he would have the piloting skills needed to fly the others onward in the air-car. Magnaboy had the necessary piloting skills but could not squeeze his massive frame in a pilot’s chair made for the much smaller Chris.

Lightboy ran the distance from Alice Springs to the professor’s hideout in the blink of an eye. This was quite literal, for the moment he arrived blinking was about all he could do. There was a sudden flash of light which momentarily blinded him, and before he could completely stop himself Lightboy ran into something – strange. Whatever it was yielded somewhat to his movements but was incredibly sticky and held him fast. It also gave off a very strange smell that made him very sleepy.

Lightboy blinked and looked sleepily around to see what had caught him. It looked very much like a volleyball net – only it was octagonal in shape and about ten feet in diameter. Lightboy tried to use his power to vibrate his molecules and phase his body out of this trap, but the narcotic fumes he was breathing made him too sleepy for this.

It took Lightboy another moment to realize that he was caught in some kind of gigantic spider’s web when along came a spider… over seven feet tall!

EPISODE 2 PART 3

At first Lightboy thought he was imagining things. When he realized that the thin that was approaching was not his imagination, he began to scream and thrash around like a madman in his bonds in a frantic attempt to get free. He only succeeded in getting himself more firmly entangled in the sticky web he was trapped in.

As it got closer however, Lightboy began to realize that the creature approaching him resembled a spider only superficially – perhaps exaggerated in his head because of his current situation. It’s elongated body was quite evidently humanoid, but with spider-like elements added in. For example, it *did* have eight rather spindly limbs, but was walking erect on only two of them; the other six were evidently arms. Its coloration was a strange shade of purple however, and had no fur on its body anywhere.

Its head was humanoid in appearance, although there was a set of bony ridges on the top of its head where its hair should be. Its two eyes (not eight like a true spider) were multi-faceted like a fly rather than a spider’s eyes, and it had a set of antennae sprouting from its temples (no spider has antennae). And it wore a set of bright pink Speedos.

With some relief, Lightboy realized that this creature was more or less human and would therefore not see him as lunch. However, it was likely to be one of the Professor’s own minions and therefore would not be a friend either. He continued to try freeing himself even as the creature walked right up to him, looked him in the eye, and placed a hand on Lightboy’s shoulder. The moment he did that, it was lights-out for Lightboy.

When Lightboy awoke an unknown time later, his situation seemed only slightly different at first. He was still unable to move and the spider-guy was right next to him. Then Lightboy realized that he was no longer caught in a web but was cocooned from his shoulders down to his ankles in some kind of tough silk as fine (and as strong) as fishing line but soft as true silk. He was inside a laboratory of some kind rather than outdoors. He was being held aloft by the spider-guy in four of its six arms. His uniform was replaced by a garish set of Speedos he normally would not have been caught dead in. He saw the kid known as Astral Boy lying - apparently asleep – on a divan in front of him. And beyond the divan, looking at Lightboy with an evil smile on his face, was an old man.

The professor was 60 years old and far from athletic. He had long, whitish hair (in spite of having a bald spot) worn in a tight pig-tail. His longish beard was woven into two small plaits. He was tall and gaunt, and had a crazed gleam in his eyes. Except for the beard he looked like Christopher Lloyd’s Professor Brown character from the Back to the Future movies.

Lightboy tried to tell the professor that he was under arrest, but all that came out was a muffled “Mm-mm-mm”. It was only then that he realized that was gagged with another layer of the spider silk webbing; it was so lightweight he barely felt it – but it was as effective in silencing him as the rest was in keeping him restrained. His limbs were stuck together as if welded.

The professor made a deep bow in mockery of Lightboy. “Professor Xavier Tarquin Cholmondley, or Professor XTC, at your service,” he said. “To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?”

Lightboy made an outraged “Mm-mm-mm” in response.

“You wish to be a guest at my residence?” asked the professor. “It will be my pleasure.”

Lightboy looked down at the somnolent Astral Boy; realizing that he was looking at the original solid body rather than the astral form. He mmphed again in concern.

“Oh, don’t worry about him,” replied the professor. “He is merely sleeping peacefully. He quite fooled me with his keeping his powers a secret, but I injected his real body with a soporific that will keep him asleep and unable to aid you for quite some time. And now you will sleep as well, and when you awake you will have a nice new body. Maybe a somewhat larger one like Rollo here. Would you like that?”

Lightboy quickly realized that ‘Rollo’ was the tall spider-like creature that was holding him. For once, Lightboy decided he would much rather remain short than be made taller!

The professor had Rollo carry Lightboy to a flat laboratory table and held in place there with more of Rollo’s webbing – which it exuded in sprays from the palms of its six hands like streams of thick water from as many sprinklers. Lightboy watched helplessly – still too dazed to use his power to vibrate his molecules and phase his way out of his bonds – as the professor came closer with a strange looking electronic device in his hands…

Suddenly there was the clamor of an alarm, and the professor turned his attention away from Lightboy and to an electronic monitor on a nearby wall. “So, you’ve brought some friends with you, eh?” said the professor with a cackling laugh. “Well, if they’re as easy to catch as you wee, I’ll have plenty of subjects for my experiments. Rollo, assemble the others and capture the intruders. Don’t hurt them any more than necessary; some of them may prove worthy of careful study!”

Rollo made an eerie, inhuman chittering noise rather than answer in any human tongue and hurried away. “Now then,” said the professor as he once again approached Light Boy with sinister intent. “Let’s resume where we left off.”

*

Copyboy landed the air-car a mile or so away from where Lightboy had literally run into difficulties. He and the other heroes then proceeded on foot or flew as their powers allowed them. Still wearing Lightboy’s form and having his power of super speed, Copyboy rushed to the scene at once to look around. Energy Kid, who could also move at light speed, was right behind him. The others did not take very long before they also caught up, as (except for Invisible Lad) all could move much faster than an ordinary human being could. Even Stretch was fast moving, as he could simply extend himself to make huge, distance-devouring strides. Invisible Lad was the sole exception, but he simply got a ride on Big Boy’s shoulder as the latter grow to his full size and strode along at a steady 35 miles (56 kilometers) an hour.

There was no sign of the real Lightboy or their guide Astral Boy, nor any sign indicating where they went. As Magnaboy pondered what to do, the young heroes were abruptly met by a large reception committee that emerged from the ground all around them by many, cunningly concealed trap doors.

A large boy who resembled a photographic negative somehow come to life rushed at Magnaboy and hugged him as if greeting a long lost relative. There was a flash of light and an electric-sounding zapping noise, and Magnaboy was sent reeling backwards from an electrical discharge that would have crispy-fried a normal human being his size. The large gray boy was heavily stunned but still conscious however, and gave the negative boy a tap on the noggin that proved to be a more effective sleep-inducer.

But then another boy confronted him. This kid seemed like an ordinary looking sweet faced kid in funny clothing and no threat to Magnaboy at all, but all of a sudden Magnaboy doubled over as if suffering from acute appendicitis. “I can mess with your brain, and make you feel whatever I want you to feel,” the kid told Magnaboy with a laugh that belied his innocent appearance. “Now I’m going to make you and your five friends feel like you’re all on fire!”

Still dazed from the Negative Boy’s energy blast, Magnaboy’s strength was of no help to him. Even though he was normally highly resistant to pain or damage of any type, he felt as much pain as his six companions were currently feeling. This one snotty brat was about to defeat them all!

Wait a minute! Why had he said *five* friends? He had *six*, didn’t he?

Magnaboy realized what had happened just as soon as his sadistic assailant got knocked out with a strategically placed whack on the back of the head by a rock that seemed to move of its own accord. The kid known as Mindbender had failed to see Invisible Lad. Unaffected by Mindbender’s powers therefore, the unseen hero (who up to now had seemed to Magnaboy like the weakest and least useful of the group) was able to act rather than merely writhe around in agony like the others were doing.

There were other foes to deal with, though they seemed to lose their will to fight when they saw Mindbender go down. Without him to soften up the heroes, the others realized that they had little chance and tried to flee. Magnaboy caught a large boy with blue skin, purplish hair, a tail like that of a rat, and a horn sprouting from the center of his forehead as he ran past him in panic. “Tell me how to get to the professor,” he said to the boy as he lifted him up to his eye level (which meant that his victim’s feet dangled several inches in the air) and raised his fist meaningfully.

The blue boy took one look at this fist and the muscular arm behind it, turned a sickly shade of green, and immediately babbled everything he knew while shaking in intense fear. Magnaboy tossed his victim casually aside lime an empty soda can, walked to a spot indicated by the lavender boy, reached down, dig his fingers into seamless rock, and heaved. A trap door hidden in the rock was immediately torn away to reveal a stairway leading down.

As it was decided his power would be of little use in what was likely to be cramped quarters down below, Big Boy was left outside to round up and capture their fleeing reception committee while Magnaboy and the others proceeded into the tunnel. Copyboy and Energy Kid speeded on ahead to scout out the area while Magnaboy and the rest proceeded as fast as they could behind them.

*

“If you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself,” snarled Professor Ecstasy to himself as he put on his favorite gas mask and then pressed a control that flooded his entire installation with fast-acting narcotic gas.

*

Before Magnaboy knew what was happening, and the other heroes with him were overcome by irresistible sleepiness and fell over onto the floor; unconscious.

Aw, he's not that bad when you get to know him. See what a happy smile he has?

EPISODE 2 PART 4

Big Boy had little trouble rounding up, subduing, and securing those enemies who had remained above ground rather than retreat back into their subterranean den. None of them were built for speed but for power, and none of these could match the power of a fifty-foot tall boy. One enemy built like a ape with bright pink scales instead of fur foolishly tried, quite viciously – until Big Boy clutched the pink punk inside his giant fist and literally squeezed the fight right out of him.

Big Boy had just finished securing this foe with one of his (giant sized) shoelaces when he heard a familiar voice call frantically to him. “Magnaboy and the others have been captured! What are we going to do?”

“Settle down, Invisible Lad!” Be said to the voice. “First of all, make yourself visible so that don’t step on you by accident. Then tell me exactly what happened.”

Invisible Lad made himself visible, and Ben realized that this was the first time he had ever seen him. He hoped it was not the last time either; Invisible Lad was rather cute! He was apparently about 14 years old, 5’ 10”, 160 pounds, and had a gorgeous swimmer’s build. Despite the English name, Casper was a Hindu Indian boy who looked very much like the 1940’s actor Sabu in his first movie. Ben felt like it was love at first sight, but this was no time to dwell on that.

Invisible Lad told Ben that the tunnel they were in was flooded with sleep gas and knocked out Magnaboy and those with him. Casper had not been affected because he had been asked by Magnaboy to hang back, undetected, where he’d be most useful to give warning in case of attack from the rear. Instead, being so far behind the others detected saved him from being close enough to the sleep gas to be affected like the others.

“We have to do something, but I can’t effectively use my strength against the enemy from out here,” exclaimed Big Boy. “If only I could turn invisible like you can.”

“Well, there *is* a way… but you might not like it much,” said Casper with a voice filled with unmistakable embarrassment.

“I’m for anything that enables me to sneak on there where I can do some good,” Ben insisted. “How can you make me invisible too?”

“I… ummm…” Casper’s already dark-toned face began to flush. “I can make you invisible along with me if… ummm… we’re hugging each other. Really tightly.”

Ben stared at Casper for a moment, and then smiled inwardly. Hell, he could live with that! His only regret would be that he wouldn’t be able to see Casper while they were hugging. A familiar feeling in his groin told him that maybe it’d be as well Casper couldn’t see him either. In fact, that thing down there would soon become bigger than Casper himself in a moment – Big Ben hastily shrank himself down to his normal size and hoped his feeling of excitement was less noticeable that way.

Now a head taller than Ben, Casper held the younger boy in his arms and asked him to hug him back as tightly as possible. Needing no further encouragement, Ben hugged him back in as tight an embrace as he could manage, closed his eyes, and sighed with quiet contentment. There was a sudden giddy sensation, and Ben didn’t know if that was Casper’s power working or some more mundane power at work inside of him.

“Okay, we’re invisible now,” Ben heard Casper tell him. “Open your eyes now. From here, it’s sufficient if we maintain simple contact like holding hands.”

Ben opened his eyes, wondering how Casper knew they’d been shut – and realized that he could still see Casper and himself. “Hey, it didn’t work!” he said in disappointment.

“Yes, it did,” replied Casper, still holding both of Ben’s hands in his. “It’s the way my power works. I can always see myself and whatever I am rendering invisible with me. If you’ll look at the prisoners you tied up, you’ll see what I mean.”

Ben looked at where he has his prisoners, and realized that Casper was right. They were talking among themselves asking where Casper and Ben went, ad trying vainly to free themselves from the giant sized shoelaces Ben had tied them with. Fortunately anything that Ben made giant-sized remained giant-sized even when he resumed normal size again – unless he was holding that item when he shrank. Confident that his captives were secured too well to get themselves free anytime soon, Ben (happily) let Casper lead him by the hand back down to the tunnel into Professor Ecstasy’s secret lair.

*

Professor Ecstasy was outraged. “*Two?* You captured two prisoners; the hulking gray youth and a human rubber band? What happened to the others? There were at least two other kids coming down the tunnel!”

Rollo chittered in puzzlement; it didn’t know what happened.

“I need to know what I’m dealing with,” snarled the professor. “Interrogate the prisoner.”

Rollo walked over to where Light boy lay on the divan and placed one of its strangely shaped hands over Lightboy’s gag. Within seconds the material of the gag seemed to rot away, and Rollo tore it off in one quick, easy motion without hurting Lightboy in the least. ^Tell – about – others – or – I – torture - you!^ said Rollo in clear but strangely metallic sounding words. It sonded almost... regretful. It occurd occured to Lightboy that Rollo didn't want to hurt him - or anyone else; but was somehow forced to obey the professor's every command. Perhaps under that inhuman exterior was a human boy who wished he were doing something else.

Depite this, Lightboy gave Rollo the usual anatomically impossible response. Then, perversely, it occurred to him for a second that maybe Stretch could do thatquite easily…

Before he could pursue the thought (assuming he ever intended to) Rollo began to tickle Lightboy. Rollo had six arms – each half again as long as a normal human arm given him over twice the arm spread of a normal human being. His enabled Rollo to tickle Lightboy on the feet, on his tummy, and under his arms – all at the same time!!! It was like being tickled by three people (each using both hands) at once.

Lightboy squealed with uncontrollable laughter as he writhed and thrashed in his bonds in a frantic but futile attempt to escape. Rollo tickled him mercilessly, until Lightboy thought he was about to wet those weird-looking Speedos the professor had put on him.

Suddenly, the laboratory was rocked by a not very distant explosion. Rollo was sent sprawling backwards and Professor Ecstasy fell to his knees. At about the very same moment, the vibration from the explosion coupled by his own frantic laughter gave Lightboy just the stimulation he needed to overcome the narcotics in his system. At once he vibrated the molecules of his body and the webbing that entrapped his body fell away from him.

So did the Speedos – but Lightboy managed to grab them and put them back on in a blur of motion so fast no one else ever noticed this. He hated the ridiculous looking things, but they were better than the alternative until he found his own costume again.

The professor lurched back to his feet with an angry scowl on his face. “What the Hell happened?!” he demanded to know from no one in particular.

“*We* happened!” replied a youthful voice behind him.

Muttering a curse under his breath, the professor turned around to see Energy Kid facing him with arms folded across his chest and a miniature Micro Boy standing on one of the other boy’s shoulders. “I was in energy form and wasn’t affected by your gas,” said Energy Kid. “Copyboy had assumed my form and powers and wasn’t affected either. And though you’d knocked out Micro Boy, he was so small he was unseen by your goon squad when you carried off Magnaboy and Stretch as your prisoners.”

“In fact one of your scumbags stepped on me while you were lugging them off,” snapped an aggrieved Micro Boy. “Good thing I’m as hard as a rock when I’m bug-sized! All the same, it hurt and now it’s payback time!”

And with that, Micro Boy launched a flying kick at the professor’s chest. It seemed ridiculous; a boy two inches kicking a full grown man. But Mike still had all his 200 pound mass packed into that tiny two inch body and had ten times his normal strength in the bargain. As a result, the professor felt like – and flew backward like – he had been kicked by a mule. He was sent crashing into a wall, unconscious – with a broken rib.

“Where’s Copy Boy?” Lightboy asked the others as he rejoined them.

“He’s freeing those people you sent us to rescue,” answered Mike Roe as he resumed normal size and began to tie up the professor. “Energy Kid and Copy Boy managed to disable the professor’s power systems and security systems with that explosion you must have heard. Big Boy and Invisible Lad managed to sneak in right afterward and they’re capturing all of the professor’s sidekicks.”

Lightboy and the others quickly managed to revive Magnaboy and Stretch; the latter was especially chagrined at the fact that so far he was the only one on the team who hadn’t proved useful on the mission. This changed though when it was discovered that no keys could be found for the prison cells in which the professor kept his captives. Stretch was able to insert his incredibly limber fingers through the keyholes and trip open the locks, and he felt better.

No one was tactless enough to point out that Magnaboy could have simply ripped the cell door off their hinges just as easily and quickly.

But in the end, it turned out to be a good thing that it was Stretch who freed the prisoners. Only afterward did they learn that the cell doors were booby-trapped; forcing them open would have caused an explosion powerful enough to kill anyone inside the prison cell and (other than Magnaboy himself) any potential rescuers. So Stretch was vindicated after all.

Lightboy was chagrined when he saw the others. He scarcely recognized most of them; the Cross of Changes Reaper had used had drastically altered many of them. Nuclearo for instance was now a mere 20 years old instead of the middle-aged man he had been, the Haloguy was a mere teenager, and Cricks was…

Cricks?!?

Sure enough, Cricks was there too, only now he thought he was somebody named Shane something-or-other. Perhaps the mysterious Zanev had given Cricks a second chance after all – settling for imposing a mind wipe or something instead of wiping him entirely out of existence.

In any case, new identities would have to be found for all of them. Sadly, none of them would be able to rejoin the league of superheroes; Lightboy was the only member who still had his powers and memories intact.

None of the other original members had their powers anymore. Anjell might not have lost her powers in a normal fashion however; as she was not in her Astral Body at the time the Cross of Changes affected her. But, like the others, the Cross had altered her in mind and body. She was younger, healthier… and she was no longer in need of a wheelchair. With her mobility restored to her, her powers (as well as her memories of being a superhero) were now a thing of the past.

Seeing Anjell suddenly reminded Lightboy of Astral Boy, who had been totally forgotten in the melee. He was soon found and revived, and given a set of clothes to replace the oddly colored Speedos he wore. But he seemed restless and unhappy in his normal body now; to him it felt awkward and clumsy, as it was subject to all the limitations of a normal (however health) human body. He craved to return to his Astral Body and enjoy total freedom of movement again. Being free, he felt like he was… all tied up!

Astral Boy, whose real name was Jay Todd Mann, asked Lightboy if he could join the new league himself. Up until then Chris hadn’t seriously thought of keeping the team together beyond this one mission, but then the other boys grew enthusiastic about the idea themselves. With the original League gone, they were the only heroes left in the world. And with Lightboy the only one who had been part of the original team and the only experienced superhero, he was unanimously chosen as the League's new leader. And so, at that moment, Lightboy’s Legion officially came into existence.

Professor Ecstasy and his young, willing assistant Mindbender were arrested and thrown into prison. The profesor's non-human minions and experiments were a different matter however. Unlike the case of the fully-human Mindbender, who had apparently used his mental telepathy to contol the others, it was decided that they were not entirely responsible for their actions. The professor had altered their bodies and Mindbender had all but controlled their minds; they were given no choice in the matter when they had opposed the heroes. Therefore these others (including Rollo) were placed into the Lightboy’s Legion’s protective custody until a way could be found to either restore them to normal human forms or rehabilitate them into normal society. They would be keep under houe arrest but would enjoy far more comfort and freedom than they did under Professor Ecstasy's control - or would if sent to prison or another laboratory. Possibly a few of them could even be allowed to join Lightboy's League themselves someday…

*

“I don’t feel comfortable doing this,” said Lightboy a week later at the new headquarters that had been set up for them. “After all, Jay, this is *your* house. Hell, it’s a mansion! You never said you were a freaking millionaire! And it’s cool of you to let us use your house to live in and make our headquarters and all and give us your money for expenses. But isn’t there some other way for us to show our appreciation than to do this?”

“No,” replied Jay piteously. “Please, just do as I ask. I – I want to be *free!*

And so Light Boy reluctantly finished chaining Jay to the bare stone wall of the cellar until the other boy was totally unable to move, and then (still feeling weird about the whole thing) padlocked shut the heavy steel door of his new closet-sized cell. Guards were then assigned to look after Jay every moment of every day to see to the health and safety (if not the comfort) of his natural body. Jay as now a very special prisoner of the Lightboy League.

**Free at last! Free at last!** loudly exclaimed an exultant Astral Boy as his Astral Body regained the power to flee the confines of his normal body. As easily as a normal person can cross the street, Astral Boy began to roam the depths of time and space at will. The first thing he wanted to do was to see a live dinosaur in the Mesozoic Era...
