The Board

Postby chadmc90 » Sun Oct 26, 2014 6:57 pm

So, does anyone else feel as if posting has declined sharply over the past few months? Idk, it just feels...empty, or not as populated as it used to.

I've also noticed a select number of people that spam the board with terrible stories that no one even comments on, yet they keep posting.

I have noticed that. There's one particular user that does it in the PG-17 section, I know of. They need to realize that rushing stories like that degrades the quality of their work and it won't win them any readers by doing so. But oh well....

I've also noticed many of my favorite writers have not posted in a while, such as our own mod Jason Toddman. Another that I'm missing more of lately is Bondagefreak. But I heard they've been really busy, though....

And Kimmi, yea that could be it as well though. My own stories have slowed somewhat, so maybe it will improve in time.

There seems to be no shortage of peripheral stuff (chat, how would . . ., Jump in the fire, etc) but I would have to agree that, with honourable exceptions such as Sarobah, Mr. Mistofeles, etc, there hasn't been a lot of quality posting lately. Jason Toddman's interests lie elsewhere at present, Bondagefreak is busy and He Who Shall be Nameless seems to have thought better of things. These things happen but I must admit that I miss Lasses's bizarre flights of whimsey.
Neither has there been much feedback for some of us who HAVE been posting. Maybe what I write doesn't deserve it. Whether it does or not, that is a disincentive to post especially where long stories are concerned.
The reading numbers vary wildly week by week. I can only vouch for my own page views but last week was a poor one and the previous week was a good one. I can see no pattern in them and can not, therefore, extrapolate to author contributions especially for such a small data set.

we are all busy...I would have written long parts for my first story had it not been my changing schedule.

I'm still able to log in and spend a few minutes on the board on a daily basis, but I'm not able to get any work done on my stories for now.
July to December is extremely busy in my line of work, but things calm right after christmas, so I'll be back to my usual posting by the end of December.

I just wrote a Halloween story in the PG-17 section. Short due to time constraints.

HI, Bondagefreak, I didn't realise you were one of Father Christmas's Elves. I wonder which one you are?

Yea I agree there's alot of peripheral stuff. And here I thought this site was mainly for stories, but seeing all that stuff makes me wonder if that even applies anymore.

Karl is one of those that I miss too. But I doubt he will be back anytime soon, if he even decides to come back. I did get one of his stories, though, and I might continue it someday.

And I highly doubt it's the quality of your writing. Your one of the few remaining authors that post regularly and can actually write something worthwhile. Many users on here seem really reluctant to give feedback. I believe they just read and move on without a single bit of feedback. It's really frustrating when they do that. I try to add as much feedback to a stories I read, good or bad. Oh well...

And Bondagefreak: Yea, I understand. I know you've been busy, so post whenever you get ready.

I can't speak for anyone except myself, but for me, I have a tendency to spread myself thin while online, doing multiple things at once and therefore forgetting to post feedback on stories I read.

However, I am striving to change this! I've made it mandatory for me to post feedback on any story I read from here on out! Until that's done, I may as well be :bound:

Controversial opinion and I don't mean to cause offense but this type of comment is an example of what posters on this site don't need. Yes some people won't be as good at writing stories as others but that's life. People have different backgrounds, levels of education and confidence. Many people, me included, find writing stories on this site a release and almost a glimpse into what potentially dream scenarios for them would feel like and how they would play out. If you don't have anyone to tie/be tied by then there is really little alternative other than writing stories and watching the odd video. These stories may be 'terrible' in your opinion but to others they could actually be exactly what they wanted.

Also the suggestion that because no one comments on them, they are terrible is arguably not their fault. There is often complaints on this board that not enough people comment on stories so there might be a chance that these particular stories may just be a victim of that.

I'm sorry if I've ranted a bit too long but I felt I needed to stick up for 'the little guy'. My message is if you like posting stories on this board and as long as they comply with the rules here, continue to do so. Don't let anyone tell you you're rubbish or try to stop you posting stories that aren't to their taste as everyone has different preferences. However equally, constructive criticism should be listened to if it helps you and you see it benefiting your writing. Finally, bear in mind that if you have no comments, don't presume its the fact no one likes what you wrote. In this day and age, people may just simply be busy or simply too shy to comment their thoughts.

To all you writers out there that continue to post, I salute you, as without you the site would die pretty fast. :big: cheers

Hardly any of these ivory tower comments help.

Re: The Board

Postby Sealherlips » Mon Nov 03, 2014 1:07 pm

There's a specific writer who doesn't know how to use grammar or structure, who is dominating certain sections of the board, and his stories are by all standards terrible. So I stand by what I said.

Postby putasockinit2 » Mon Nov 03, 2014 1:36 pm

Does it matter? really? in the grand scheme of things no it doesn't. I don't care personally if you don't like the things I write, I will continue as long as I'm able. I don't really see who put you in a judging position anyway.

oh and if you are going to indirect me in the first place, at least have the decency to tag me in it next time :)

Re: The Board

Postby Tieup1 » Mon Nov 03, 2014 4:03 pm

Whatever the standards of some stories on this site, at least they are being posted. This site relies heavily on stories being posted. So posting stories, should be encouraged, giving some feedback is one example. I don't read every story on this site, I only read the one's which will interest me. If you don't like a story, fair enough, just find another which pleases you.

One thing that does annoy me though, is writers who start off a story, then take weeks or even longer to update it. :(

Okay, yea that thinking annoys me. Its not like we get paid to post stories on here. We do this as a hobby in our free time. Sometimes things happen in our lives that prevent us from updating our stories. You should be a bit more understanding with that. You know we DON'T have to write...

As for what the conversation in this thread has turned to, I think there are some authors that could improve. Its more than just having inspiration or passion to do this. I believe some of the writers just rush through them and don't take the time to revise and edit them. I respect all writers who post here, even though I don't read every single story here. But when stories have to be deciphered or have a boring and predictable plot full of cliches are hard to read. So....yea. I am saying take your time and revise where necessary. Your readers will thank you for it.

Whether in conference with clients or bent over my iMac, I will be overworked by a demanding boss from now until things slow down just before Christmas. Often I start tickling my keyboard before 5 a.m. and may still be reading, writing and figuring come midnight. A decent boss would at least tie my legs and torso to the chair, gag me and occasionally give me a wild tickle to entertain me and show his appreciation.
Alas, hard to accomplish because I am self-employed.

It seems that many who frequent the board are more busy as year end approaches. Some of the long term members may once again appear more regularly when their life gets back to normal.

I must say that I'm honored that xtc considers me a good writer! As far as the issue of a slow board goes, I have great difficulty getting time here, which makes my posting very irregular. I try to reply to stories I particularly enjoy--if I expect replies, it's only meet that I give them!--but that too gets mired in real life. As far as the quality of the various authors goes, encouragement combined with discreet feedback can be a great tonic for a writer who takes his or her stories seriously. I'd really rather not see story-posters getting ripped for their efforts...

mea culpa. I have been tardy in finishing up or adding to my stories. Had some local problems to deal with and my working laptop blew a motherboard with my story updates on it. Repairs were to cost about $500. I tried selling my body to raise the funds but had to stop: I couldn't carry that large a bag of nickles.

Sorry about your laptop issues. I actually had to send off my laptop to get it repaired last monday. Luckilly I had bought protection for it, so it didn't cost me anything and I still have my old laptop I can use to update my stories. But it does suck....

That is a real bummer to have to confront multiple problems so close together. At least you retain your sense of humour. Makes it a little easier for you. As for that $500 computer repair bill, maybe you should consider buying new. No?

Yea, I tdefinitely agree. But it also depends on how much you paid for it. And just because your motherboard fried doesn't mean your data is gone. You can take it to a computer shop and have it recovered fairly easily. I would condider your options before paying 500 bucks.

Yes, it seems some of the former stalwarts have dropped by the wayside. But these forums membership rosters are always volatile. Don't worry, there will be new members to fill the voids. As for Scottstud, he boxed himself into a corner from which there was no escape. So, he endured a lot of very mean criticism, some of it too vile, IMO. I really felt bad to see his apparently unhappy departure. I hope he returns sometime.

I do think this is the case. There are not as many stories and even in this SubHeading (TugsTalk) it seems like the same people are posing and answering all the questions. With Scott back maybe it will encourage others to chat more, offer more thoughts and ideas, and, write stories.
