Did you know that the probability of two people having the same birthday in a group of 23 people is a bit more than a half. Mind blown.

December during a blizzard and my dad had to drive 30 miles to the hospital in Denver haha.

My birthday is the same as Harry Potter's; July 31. Different year, of course.
This means that nine months backward my folks were getting me started while my older brother was probably being taken out of the way by relatives to go trick-or-treating. This may explain a few spooky things about my life!

I was born on October 21. My brother was born one days later but six years earlier. My dad's birthday is on the 19th. I have a stepsister who was born on Halloween which makes things even spookier because I had an uncle and cousin drown that same day back in 1993.
From whence I came and whence I went heaven said I was too evil and sent me to hell. Demons and devils succeeded in breaking my soul.

I'd read that in Ripley's Believe It or Not a long time ago. I believe it was mentioned on the TV show they had in the 80's as well.
Edit: So far, if at least 23 people answer this poll, that date (if any) seems most likely to be in July! :big:

wouldnt it be 2/23? which is 0.08%

I'm not sure but I think you're thinking of two people being born in the same month, not the same day of the year. Odds of that though favor a match with only 4 or 5 people present.

If you have 23 people, and 2 of them have the same birthday, then that means 2 out of 23 people have the same birthday...2 people / 23 . which is 0.08%

Ah, now I see what you're getting at... I think.
But no, for one thing 2/23 is .08, which is equal to 8 %, not .08%... .08 % is actually 2/2300, you see (that decimal point changes things by a factor of 100).
In the second place, your ratio would seem to indicate that a match-up is LESS likely with LARGER goups of people. For example, are you saying the odds are only 2/50 if there are fifty people involved? That doesn't follow numeric logic at all.
Anyway, howeve you figured it and despite what seems like common sense, supposedly the odds of any 2 of the 23 people having the same birthday is actually slightly better than 50%. I don't know why this should be, but I've heard this several times before... the fist time many years ago. Something to do with Chaos Theory, I suppose. That is, even seemingly totally random events will show some pattern given enough incidents... such as winning lottery numbers.
Of course, the chances are almost equally great that the birthday matchup in a group of 23 *won't* happen - as indeed it won't at least 1 time out of every 2 (more or less).
However, I myself *would* like to see this matchup in such a small group actually demonstrated - if only to prove that this isn't just another myth someone made up.

Glad you posted that. I think I used to know the basic reason for the 'birthday ratio' as given here (though the more complex mathematics cited later is way beyond MY understanding) but had long ago forgotten it. Thanks for the refresher. :geek:

I have one friend who's super annoying, but his birthday is on December 12th, the same as his brother's (two years older) and his sister's (six years younger). But mine's in October.
