Footfan, the Barney jokes are getting old. This is the third time I've looked at one of your pics of him in the past half hour. Give it a rest!

This is what is known as Hobson's Choice.

Footfan, the Barney jokes are getting old. [/quote] From Jason Toddman

Hey, I don't mind Barney jokes-For example:

Q: What is the difference between Rush Limbaugh and Barney?

A: One is a dinosaur who gives simplistic answers, and the other is purple!

I do mind Barney Fife jokes, however. Nip it in the bud!

That cartoon falls into the same trap that a lot of media outlets are: pretending the Syrian opposition is basically an al-Qaeda front rather than a complex somewhat-coalition of many different groups that has secular roots.

Not that any of that makes your statement any less true, of course.

True; real life isn't that simple. But it seems to me that every time we intervene over there, all we do is make things even worse for everyone; them, us... everyone. Have we made the world a safer and happier place by invading Iraq and Afghanistan? Did we accomplish anything positive in ousting Saddam Hussein that was worth the cost in lives and resources? Are we safer than we were just after 9/11? Havent' we been burned enough in that Godsforsaken part of the world already?
Seems to me that we're damned if we do and damned if we don't. I vote we go for the easier and cheaper option and stay the hell out of it until we're attacked ourselves directly.
Every country in history that had an overactive foreign policy eventually lost its political and economic clout by over-extending itself. Spain did. France did. Britain did. Germany did big time. Japan. Russia. Italy. All were once greater in the last few centuries than they are now; but they over-reached themselves and their dreams crumbled like a house of cards by the winds of change. It'll happen to us too if we don't stop trying to be the world's policemen. No one else likes it and we can't afford it. If we don't stop, we'll wind up being second banana to some other country with a much different way of doing things - like China!

Georgie is a Catholic, the Syrian Christians back Assad, so yeah, Georgie thinks Assad is a good guy. Sheesh.

Jason, I think you have the right end of the stick; there are fundamentally no good guys left in this situation. While I get misterg's point that the rebel coalition is more than just al-Quaida, our experience in Egypt whould inform us that in any coalition that includes radical religious sectarians, the sectarians tend to be the part of the coalition that gains political power. For them, this is a jihad, and their secular allies are allies of convenience to be used until the Assad regime goes down, at which point the secularists will be disposed of in the same manner as the original opponents. I don't, and that includes the Pope.
The current one is nice enough I suppose, but he's still the head of a church that i think long since lost its proper reason to exist.

I like his emphasis on alleviating poverty over the usual obsession with abortion, but he is still new to the job, and I keep in mind the suspected fate of John Paul I, who also wanted to do some house-cleaning in Vatican City...

yes, and also consider the fact that the Vatican is trying to downplay the Pope's statements about atheists being able to go to Heaven; claiming that what he said was not church doctrine. Hey Vatican dudes, i thought the pope was infallible! Whatever he says is church doctrine by your own rules!

Im sorry but you seem to be irked very easily dont you Mr Toddman ?

That comment was meant largely as a joke, Footfan; so perhaps you're engaging in some projection here.
However, I AM genuinely irked by flame wars such as the one you and several others just started in a different thread. I suggest you do not start another with me. That really would irk me.
