We used to tie each other up frequently as kids, but only one of us really LIKED getting tied up, and then, only because he liked to show off how easy it was for him to escape. The rest of us thought it was great fun to tie up the other guy. We tolerated being tied up because we knew that our turn would come before the day was out, and if it didn't, it would certainly come the next day. It might even come earlier, if we were spending the night at a friend's house, or if a friend or two was spending the night with us.
We also tacitly understood that (at the ages from 10 to 15) no one would want to play if they had a bad experience. Therefore, the younger kids (10-11, some 12) were never left tied for longer than 15 minutes, unless they specifically requested it. ("I want to try and get out by myself!") 30 minutes was the limit. We also made sure that they got to tie a couple of the older kids (which they dearly loved doing). Most of the younger kids couldn't tie worth a damn, and even the most inept escapist got free from them nine times out of ten. Another precaution, was that we never left anyone tied alone. Someone was always close.
For the older kids (some 12, 13-14-15), 20 minutes was the limit, again, unless they asked to be left tied longer. Then the limit went to 45 minutes, but never any longer. And, if anyone asked to be untied, it was done, no questions asked.
