New stories

Postby SelenaGfan » Thu Jul 23, 2015 3:01 pm

I wish people would finish current on going stories befor starting new on. There are a few writers with too
many stories that are on going or unfinished then start new ones. One writer has a couple collabrated with
others that will never be finished.

Well, if it makes you feel better, my unfinished stories are long works in progress. Some things demand inspiration, and I am not inspired on some.

Mate you can blame the people I collaborated with for that, I know it's me you're referring to

True that. Feedback is appreciated and encouraging
For long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be...

TiedDancer speaks the truth

There are several new writers on the board who are writing really well in different sections.
Some are getting only two or three responders in spite of getting several hundred page views.
It's not much of an incentive to continue.

That's usually what I find on my stories.

Re: New stories

Postby xtc » Fri Jul 24, 2015 1:11 pm

A personal example:
Since October 9th last year, when I last posted on viewtopic.php?f=78&t=11886&p=191392#p191392 there have been over 7000 page views. All those views and only two people bothered to comment and that was only after I threw a hissy fit and left the story unfinished. It is still being read more frequently than by far the majority of my stories so I can't help feeling that none of those who reads it gives a damn.

Sorry - raw nerve there!

It has made me decide to post no more long stories on the site when I can get a better response elsewhere. Please compare the responses to the series starting with http://xtcgm.deviantart.com/art/FORSTAL ... -530950604 on DA compared to the lack of reaction here. Jason worked his arse off to make those drawings fit my ideas and to provide additional material of his own for very little reaction.

I'd like to change my mind about posting on here, though . . . hint, hint.

Such is the truth for many of us. I worked on only two "long stories." Neither could ever get feedback even when I said it was experimental and demanded feedback. As a result, I have two unfinished stories with 1000+ views.

In total, 11 stories have had over 1000 views, including a few over 3000! But in all those stories, I have gotten about 10 comments of feedback, one of which nitpicked on a single typo in a story with about 100 typos.

If you read a story, and you enjoy it, post a comment, it will give the writer some encouragement.

If you have to be critical of a story, do it via pm, which is better than posting it up on the board.

Support the writers, don't just take them for granted :annoy:

I completely agree, and I doubt if anyone's that fussed whether I do or not, but to help remedy SelenaGfan's original problem a bit, I'm gonna make an effort to finish all my stories before I start any new ones from now on

Feedback is important to writers, but some do not take hints and suggestions well, either openly, or through PM.

An idea which, I think has passed this way before, is that the board be configured with "like/dislike" or "like/neutral/dislike" icons at the end of the story, which the reader can click.

Yes that's actually a good idea but it might cause even less comments...

Although if you want to take one of them for a meal, they might like that as well...

Seriously - if i let the lack of comments stop me using writing here and on my site as the therapy I need, I would have stopped a LONG time ago. But then, I like writing...

Dislike buttons just beg for trolling. I have seen many active sites die from them. If you have a dislike button, it should just use a system where likes are +1 and dislikes are -1, but the post cannot go below 0. Otherwise, people will just bang on the dislike to cause trouble.

Agree on the dislike button. Plus, I feel like if you dislike something, you should give a reason. I think a dislike button could lead to people disliking a story simply because it isn't to their preferences (i.e., a person who only likes M/M disliking a F/F story because it isn't M/M, even if it's otherwise well-written), people disliking a post just because it's from a user they don't like, etc. I think a like system could potentially help some authors out there know that there are people who have liked and read their stories, even if they didn't comment, but a dislike button is a huge nono.

It has been my experience that readers do not usually comment on stories that do not fall within their preferred genre. If a reader knows from the outset that a story is M/M, but he/she prefers F/M, chances are, that the reader won't even open it, much less comment on it.

But there are exceptions to everything.

One other set of identifiers could be:

C - Children 9 or younger
PT- Pre-Teen 10-12
YT - Young teen 13-15
OT - Older teen 16-19
YA - Young adult 20-29
A - Adult 30-49
SA - Senior adult 50+

Yea, its true. As annoying as it seems, readers need to know that authors don't drop stories just for the hell of it. When people don't comment or leave feedback, they feel like the story isn't getting any readers or that it's "bad.". Therefore they give up on it, deeming it a lost cause. If you guys want these stories to continue then show it! Go to one of those stories and say a simple " thank you " or "wonderful read!" It doesn't have to be a paragraph or such. Just let the reader know you are reading and that you appreciate the effort.
