Second Banner Poll: Should Banner Be Replaced?

Postby Jason Toddman » Sat Dec 01, 2012 10:45 am

Some readers have asked whether or not the banner should be replaced. I am planning to draw up a new one, though of course Zanev and possibly others have to approve it before anything happens. But what do the rest of you think?

As has been remaked elsewhere, The current one is infantile and embarassing.
PLEASE let's replace it.
Anyone who doesn't like the new one can chose a theme that doesn't use it as I do at present.

I used to do that but the theme I used got lost when the site went haywire a few weeks ago and I don't like any of the others.

If your talking about the one that says "All In Fun, All In Game, All In Play" then yes it should be changed.

When I'm reading the intimate stuff it completely offsets the feel in my honest opinion.

But I'd like to see the proposed replacement before I say for sure.

I always planned to show it off for a vote once I finish it anyway. Also, any serious suggestions for modifications after I draw it would be considered.
At any rate, the final decision would be Zanev's, not mine.

By the way, if we are going to change it, we should try to make it much better than the last one. No use in downgrading, right?

I do hope that isn't a criticism of my drawing skills! :worried:

I don't follow the relevancy of this.

Uhhhhh... what? :? If you mean alternating banners every so often, that might be asking a bit too much of Zanev.

Would anyone be willing to have a real picture used for the banner? of course the person in the photo and person taking the photo would have to give permission, but has anyone at least considered the possibility?

Jason, I was referring to Andrew's comment about a changing banner. I thought he intended to have it doi it automatically which could be done with flash or by creating a GIF.

You or anyone else can always try submitting a entry, I guess. It's Zanev who decides these kind of things, not me. I don't have any kind of lock on this by any means. :)

Well, just to add, flash or .gif is the easiest ways which is down to who makes (or edits) the banner. But their are other ways which is down to Zanev like using small javascript files on the only style with the banner, so that it randomly selects a logo (banner) from a set of them or randomly changes it every 20 secs or so. From my experience with phpBB this is possible, but not easy....

The easiest way, I'd think, for a rotating banner would be to change the banner to a .php file that grabs a random image. In the template file, change it from site_logo.gif to site_logo.php, upload the various images in the same directory as banner1.png, banner2.png, etc, and put the following in site_logo.php:

<?php
$max = 3; //change this to the number of banner images uploaded
$use = mt_rand(1, $max);
header("content-type:image/png");
echo file_get_contents("banner$use.png");
?>

Of course, this means it'll only change when the page is loaded. If you'd like to change it periodically instead, first make a JavaScript file banner.js:

var max = 3; //change this to the number of banner images loaded
var current = 1;
var banner;

function init() {
banner = document.getElementById("bannerimage");
banner.src = banner.src.split("site_logo")[0] + "banner1.png"; //this accounts for some styles using .gif and others .png
window.setInterval(function(){rotate()}, 20000); //20 seconds between switching
}

function rotate() {
var derp = current;
current++;
if(current > max)
current = 1;
banner.src = banner.src.replace("banner"+derp+".png", "banner"+current+".png");
}

In the overall_header.html file for each template, give the img tag in the banner id="bannerimage" and the body tag onload="init();" and add this JS file.

I about gifs and draw think bit other, I think Jason Toddman Avatar would look as gif not much worse. By way I see a little not so well, that mean zoom this page to approximately 150% so for picture would best in svg. :) I like more drawing than real picture. The authors I would real like to see show not her face this form. :)

Me too. I inserted myself in spirit (I'm the one in the red trunks - well, as I looked - more or less - 40 years ago anyway), but that's as close as I've ever been or ever will get. :quirk:

I tend to agree with SueS. It's a bit too "busy". Shame because all the individuals/groupings bear inspection. Thanks for the effort so far; you're never going to please everyone.

And I agree with the both of you. As I admitted in a different thread, I knew I went overboard, but couldn't stop myself in my enthusiasm and figured people could vote on which elements to keep. After all, I knew when I did it that some things would have to be removed.
Also, some people are dissatisfied with clothing styles... like this was a fashion show or one of those old-style newspaper clothing ads! Sheesh!
Well, I'll work on a new draft later this week that hopefully will be less busy but still incorporate the best elements of this first draft plus perhaps a few other things this drawing lacked - such as being more carefully drawn. :big:

Hmmm... according to the poll teens/young adults were what people most wanted to see, but some people may see some characters I've drawn as younger than they were actually intended to be (a frequent problem with anime characters for example). there's also the issue about how I draw clothing.
*Sigh!*
It may be more difficult to get this right than I figured. I may have to reduce the number of characters to a more manageable level; say, no more than four or five.

Those aren't socks; her feet are taped up too. :big:
I'll have to draw a more more detail lines to make that clearer; assuming I don't delete the figure altogether to make the picture less 'busy'.

I agree the current drawing looks too busy and needs to have the number of people reduced. But in the replacement drawing, have at least a guy and a girl tied up, with the girl in a bikini or crop top and shorts. I imagine the guy will be clad in just shorts or swim trunks. And the two tied at least hand and foot with their hands behind their backs.
