Gag myth finally!

Postby TUfriend » Wed Nov 07, 2012 10:21 pm

I don't know if any of you have seen the video of the guy chewing the strip of duct tape off his lips. If you haven't, you can see it here. But I am actually really glad it has gone viral. For some reason, it really bothers me when people only put one strip of tape on someone's mouth and expect them to be silenced. You either have to plaster their face with multiple strips, wrap the tape around their head, or do something else more effective. I hate watching videos were there is only one strip of tape for a gag. (Or reading stories for that matter). No gag is fine though. Am I crazy?

No man. Not at all.

one strip across the mouth is good for atmospheric purposes but it won't shut them up unless you wrap it around multiple times or multiple strips across and even under the chin and add on to that with some mouth packing so they can't lick the adhesive off.
Everyone speaks in multiple languages...But gag talk is universal and a sock in your mouth is the perfect translator!

For me, gags have always been more about the aesthetics and less about how effective they are.

There's no doubt that a single strip of duct tape would be ineffective - even if it was super strong and you couldn't chew it off, it's still not going to be difficult to make a hell of a lot of noise through it. But the way I see it, there tends to be a trade off with effectiveness and attractiveness - wraparounds and multiple strips and huge amounts of mouth packing are all better at silencing, but I often think that they look a bit unattractive (although obviously, not everyone holds that opinion!). I prefer to use my imagination a little and put up with less effective gags if it means that they are more attractive to me :)

That being said, I do find it endlessly annoying when someone has been poorly gagged in a scene but makes absolutely no noise. No gag is THAT effective :P

It's almost as bad as the shoestring gag, where a character has the thinnest possible bit of material between their teeth and this somehow prevents all speech. Ridiculous.

I agree with the idea of the gag aesthetic; you can sacrifice a little but of effectiveness for a more attractive looking gag, but this is often taken to silly extremes. That's why I've always loved ball gags; they're pretty good at stifling speech and look gorgeous.

It always annoys me when I see people gagged with a strip, or even multiple strips, of tape.
It pleases me when I see wrap-around tape gags, which I think look most attractive when done neatly and when no wrinkles are visible in the tape.
I don't like cleave gags very much because they don't stop the person from making much noise. All it really does in my opinion is it stops them from formulating clear words. However, I do like it when a cleave gag is applied along with other, more effective, gags.
As for ball gags, they are slightly more effective than cleave gags and look quite attractive in my opinion, but I would rather be spared the sight of spit dripping out of the person's mouth, an unavoidable effect of the ball gag.
Medical gags are a bit unnecessary in my opinion unless you are using it for sexual purposes or just like the look or feel of it. Personally, I think they look extremely unattractive.

Movies, TV shows, and even books will cut a lot of corners on realism for the sake of time, drama, etc. Gags and bondage aren't really any different in that sense.

Wrap around tape gags are the best. Especially when they're nice and tight ;)

Yeah, there's always a trade-off. Ball gags have the best functionality/practicality ratio and they look great on top of that. They can also be combined with a panel/muzzle to stifle speech even more.

And the drooling...
