Whitebeard's Legacy

Postby Soul_Rebel » Sat Jan 04, 2014 5:25 am

I'm Jack, an orphan from the city's underbelly. Though weak by ourselves, us orphans have numbers, and a strong sense of brotherhood. Spending many years on the street have also made the orphan's sharp-eyed and resourceful. The orphans have not made it clear why they want the treasure.

The room was dark, and drafty. The old building had been an inn once. Now it was an abandoned wreckage, a place of large black rats, crows, and secret meetings. I light a candle, revealing several young men and an old woman, all sleeping. Except the woman. She is reading....with her hands.

The withered face does not look up at the candle lighter. She just. Mutters. "Wake up you fools. Anyone could just creep up in here with you on guard duty!" The sleepy forms stretched slowly, 5 of them in total.

The old woman looks through me, raising her voice, "You're back. So this must mean you know where the little rose is. Or are you trying my patience?" The pepper haired woman narrowed her eyes at me.

"Calm down you old crone, I think i've got a plan." I tell the old woman, who was the closest thing these orphans ever had to a mom.

The dim-witted blond youth called Harry had to retort. Like always. "Ohh a plan. I see. Im sure it will be brilliant!"

I ignored him. This next part was kinda the easy part. I didn't really have to do much of anything. Well at least until....
"We aren't going to find disloyalty in her crew. I've scoured the winesinks and taverns. No one's heard word of her since last week."

A few of the lads started to nod their heads in defeated resignation. One callow youth spoke up with a quiver in his voice, "I heard...well.. that she skinned the last man who tried to kiss her. We're trying to kidnap hermmmpph?!"

The old woman shushed the young fellow with a hand to the mouth, and gestured for me to continue.

I cleared my throat. "Well, i've thought it through. Real well. We need to let it be known we have something that she wants. So badly that she will let down her guard, meet with us."

The dim witted blond, Harry, had to pipe in. Again. "What could we possibly bring her?"

I draw a newspaper from my coat. Pointing at a picture of a bearded man on the cover I tell them,"Well her father's killer just might whet he appetite. I'm told he vowed to find the old pirate's treasure, that he fed the man to a kraken when he wouldn't tell where the booty was. He's still at large."

Pulling out a few cords of rope I continue, "I'm told the killer has a very...ordinary face."

"How are we supposed to find such a man? Even if we do, he sounds awefully dangerous." Harry still didn't grasp the plan.

"I'm going to be the killer. You take me to the Heiress, we catch her off her guard, she tells us where the treasure is!" I raise my arm in salute.

The quivering young voice was back, "What's the rope for then?"

I look at him and say, "Why to tie me up. I've got to look the part after all!"

Minutes later, my hands and feet are immobile, wrapped in cinched and knotted hemp. As the orphans finish the ropework and prepare a large burlap sack to carry me in, my adopted mother, Helya leans in. "Your a smart one, always knew you'd be. Know that i'm proud."

She smiles, and as I try to respond....puts a large pair of knickers into my mouth, poking the satin into my stuffed cheeks. As she ties a large scarf around my head to lock the underwear in, I start to grunt, making my discomfort clear.

"I know, I know. A loud boy likes to be silent as much as my cat likes baths. But you said it yourself....you have to look the part!"

I resign myself and prepare for a long night...

"Make way for the murderer. Traitor. Beast in human skin!" The procession of orphans had gained some youngsters, a few toothless old women screaming "Justice." My limited eyesight swings with the pole i'm tied to as we approach the town square. The patch was necessary, they said, back at the hideout, it made me look older, and all agreed more dangerous.

The following grows as we approach the boardwalk known for it's bound, starving and sometimes tormented prisoners. The Red Walk they call it, and it's where I am going. The dock had many posts, some stained with blood, to which prisoners could be affixed. As they released me from my pole, only to be retied to another, I begin to put on a show. Only through some theater will the hidden girl get word. Harry received an elbow to the nose, one that hopefully broke it. Never did like Harry. I give it all I got, yelling into the stuffing, perhaps too much.

A group of guards known to particularly enjoy the process of interrogation and torment, York and Bryan, approaches the scene of the facade. "What's the issue here?"

The orphan we call Terry spoke up, if not clearly or well, "we...we're imprisoning...the murderer. Whitebeard. I mean his killer."

The guards exchanged a glance. "Vary good, move on with youse. We got it from ere'." A fear like none i've ever felt begins to creep into my mind. How could I overlook this part? Until the red haired girl shows, i'm at the mercy of...well merciless men...

My entourage begins to slowly backing away, giving me the most apologetic of looks. I begin to give them a piece of my mind, though all they probably hear is a few "mmrphms." Bryan, one of the guards backhands me, causing my nose to begin bleeding. York laughs at my muffled sobbing, and walks over to another prisoner. "We'll give you somethin' to cry about, boy!"

My eyes instantly focus on the crocodile chained to the deck. The poor old man still had one of his legs..but the other....
I struggle intensely as they chain the croc to a nearby post. The reptile bolts towards me, coming only inches short of my toes.

"See that, we're giving you a little more time on this earth, murderer. When the sun sets, i'll loose him on your feet. In the morning i'll let him have a sausage for breakfast. And i'm not talking about pork." York and Bryan laugh at their clever cruelty and walk off to see to some escaped bed slaves.

Looking off into the distance, across the beautiful ocean view ironically set before the prisoners. Beauty and death. No I must keep faith. She will turn up. She has to. I would if it was my father's killer.

Just then, a captain's wife and a paymaster walked past, deep in the freshest gossip. The woman's voice was penetrating, and loud, "....they caught her, haven't ya heard? Redeye's going to have hisself a golden eye made with all the gold she'll turn up."

The paymaster, an educated slave with dark skin replied, "A rich father she had. But also a clever and dangerous one. Do you think his daughter would so easily spill the secret?"

The woman looked the man over like he was some innocent child who needed to learn the world was a dangerous place. "They all talked. Back when Redeye ran the jails here in Leiran. And not one of his charges t'was ever seen again."

They trailed off talking about the new jail warden and his curious fascination for human jaw bones. I swallowed deep. I will die here. Unless....I have to escape. The croc pulled at his chain, and the wooden post it was affixed to began to creak.......

I'll be Sam Morgan, a mysterious man in his late 20s. He only has moderate sailing experience but is a very accomplished fighter. He isn't above getting involved in nefarious schemes but does not like to hurt the innocent, but has no problems with fighting those who he sees as those who are not innocent. Some of his actions have resulted in some bounties on his head.

Sam has a partner, Rebecca Lawson, a woman in her early 30s, and an accomplished fighter herself. In fact she is so far the only person to have beaten Sam in a fair one-on-one fight. Following this, she reveals she has sought him out specifically to become her partner, and since she had him at cutlass-point at the time, he accepted. Rebecca wants Sam to help her find the lost treasure of Whitebeard. She has some mystery herself, as her father has some connection to Whitebeard but Sam is not entirely sure what it is.

Despite how the relationship started, the two have now become almost inseparable partners. Rebecca has helped Sam on several occasions, managing to avoid becoming notorious and have bounties on her own head as he has, though it is known he does have a female companion. In turn, Sam helps her with her own schemes. She is probably the overall better fighter and pirate, however, Sam is the master planner. Together they do make a formidable team.

Sam is about 6' tall, muscular, with dark hair and facial hair. Rebecca is about average height, a little on the stocky side but much more strong than fat, with blonde hair.

(I meant to actually enter the story now, but will have to do that later, hopefully in a few hours. I figured I'd go ahead and post the intro though.)

"Hold on just a minute there. We know you're Sam Morgan, wanted man. You're coming with us. We've got a nice reward coming our way."

Crap. I had thought people here wouldn't know about the bounties out for me. Apparently I was wrong. Now here I was staring at the end of a flintlock pistol pointed at me by one bearded man. His clean-shaven friend had some rope, no doubt intended for my hands.

I was thinking about how to get out of this one, not seeing a way out easily. I could definitely take either of these guys in a straight fight, but if the guy with the gun was any good at all he'd shoot me before I could take out either one. Maybe if I waited for the guy with the rope to start tying my wrists...

Just then we heard a female voice. "Excuse me gentlemen, can you help me out?"

It was Rebecca. I was really glad to see her now. The men seemed distracted for a second by her decolletage. This was my chance. I raced forward and punched the one with the pistol, grabbing the pistol from him. The other guy reacted but I was faster. I slammed the pistol over his head. He was unconscious. I gave his friend a good kick. He was extremely dazed.

"Looks like I showed up right on time" Rebecca said.

"I could've taken them" I responded. I dragged them down into the dark corner of the alley, behind some barrels.

"Sure you could" she said, taking the rope from me. I held the gun on them as Rebecca tied them up. There wasn't enough rope to tie them individually so Rebecca tied them up back-to-back. There was just enough rope to go around their bodies. It wouldn't take them long to get out of this normally but there was the blow to the heads and we didn't need long to get away.

"Let's get out of here" I said, keeping the pistol with me, and we took off as the men slowly regained consciousness.

Once we were safely away from the alley and back to the nearby inn we stopped in the tavern. It was fairly empty at the moment so nobody should recognize me here.

Rebecca seemed excited. "Someone found her" she said.

I had no earthly idea who she was talking about. "Who?" I asked.

"The girl. Whitebeard's daughter."

"Oh." The one Rebecca wanted to find. I should've known.

"We need to come up with a plan to get to her before someone else does" Rebecca said.

"I think you need to get close to her first. She'll probably trust another woman more than a man" I said.

"We have to find her first" Rebecca said.

"Point taken. We're not doing that from here. Let's go."

We got up and left the inn. Rebecca said "After running into your 'friends' back there, should you be out wandering the streets like this? It could happen again."

"I'll take my chances"I responded. "Surely not many people here will know me."

Before long we discovered someone already had found the girl. A random passerby mentioned something about a group of men carrying off a redheaded girl.

"That's just great" I said.

"We can't give up now" Rebecca said.

About this time we came across some kid tied to a pole with a crocodile chained to a nearby pole. I stopped a nearby young woman and asked her what was going on.

"They've caught the murderer of Whitebeard" she said. "They're going to execute him soon."

I didn't have to be told how it was going to happen. So much for the usual hanging. I started to respond that he looked awful young to have done it but something stopped me. Something about it didn't add up. It was odd timing too. But it wasn't my business. If they were focused on him nobody would be paying attention to me. Rebecca and I moved on, trying to figure out where this redheaded pirate's daughter could be.

The night passes, thankfully without the reptile breaking loose. Better yet, York, the guard, has apparently forgotten to let the croc eat my toes as promised. No sleep for me, though. I get fish guts thrown on me often, and a few children decide to waste some perfectly good eggs to "enhance" what might be my last night on this earth.

I must have slept for a little while, I guess, because the sadistic guard York is waking me up with a fresh bucket of fish guts. "Wake up, murderer." Bryan is beside him, grinning. He leans in, "We figured ya out. Got some help, but don't think we needed it!"

Just then I notice a burlap sack next to them. Moving. York pulls the young orphan, Edgar, out by his collar. His wrists are bound, though the sash of cloth tied around his head had fallen to rest around the boy's neck. "I'm sorry Jack. They insisted that they'd kill you if I didn't tell them...."

Tell them what....oh no.

Bryan crossed his arms, "We know you're no murderer. Tell us why you lied about such a thing, and we'll loose ya, swear it."
York stuffed Edgar back in his sack.

A thousand thoughts fly through my head, this might be my chance. Do I dare trust the likes of York and Bryan? Do I risk denying them?

The lunk, York, pulls down my gag, and pulls the underwear out. I can see them laughing about the knickers behind their serious facade.

As I muse, a fiasco pulls away all attention; a procession of dripping wet sailors are walking down the boards, cursing. "...I find that little wretch, i'm going to skin 'er for sinking my boat!" Redeye led them shouting out his plans for vengeance as they staggered into a nearby tavern.

So she's escaped....

Just then, my mind was made up, "I respectfully decline, my good ser's. I'm a murderer, and it would be bad form to release me." I marvel at my own courage.

York and Bryan exchange a look.
"As it happens, we're going to release you anyway....Just not the kind of releasing you think......."

They unbind my torso and march me across the walk to.....the horn. The horn had been used for centuries to coral large fish into the cove of Leiran. For an unexplained reason, the vibrations attracted fish from far out to sea. And when all those little fish came swimming up, so did the sharks....

"You wanna be a murderer, we'll show how we treat murderer's, won't we Bryan?"
Bryan grinned and said, "Word is youre an animal lover. After all, ya fed ol' Whitebeard to that kraken. Or was it a shark?"

I begin to struggle and try to scream, but only pathetic mew's come out. York hits me hard across the face. I try to keep consciousness, though.... he hit me hard!

I see a bright shore with calm waters. There's a mermaid swimming up to the beach. Her hair is red-copper, and her eyes are enchanting. I clumsily try to stumble out to her- but I only swing. When I look back she's gone, but the ocean is still there. The horn. The horn's blowing has woken me.

I look down and see York and Bryan's ropework. I'm strung to an anchor by enough rope to work a small yacht. My pants are filled with what feels like fish guts, all the better to attract the sharks to a vulnerable spot.I decide I really hate those guards. Not surprisingly, my gag has been refitted, and as I feel the soft silk in my mouth I think of Helya, that old caring woman. Yet- how could she of let me do this reckless thing if she cares so much.....Then my thoughts traveled to the orphans...That's why....They need to eat.

The worst part wasn't, that i'll fail them all. With resignation, I begin to stare at the fish as they fill the void below me. I'm shaken as the chain holding the anchor above deck shifts.

York calls from behind, "we're releasing you, just like we said!" The two buffoons laugh at the sad excuse for humor.

As I slowly begin to sink, I note a large object pushing the surface water some 30 yards off. This looks bad.....

Unfortunately Rebecca and I didn't figure out where the girl could be so we returned to the inn.

The next morning after breakfast we set out again. At one point in the middle of town we passed a young woman I thought for sure was her. She was about the right age and had the red hair.

"I'll talk to her" Rebecca said. "She'll be more likely to listen to me."

I hung back, making a turn around a corner for Rebecca to lure the woman down it. However, shortly after Rebecca came back by herself.

"It's not her" Rebecca said. "This woman's definitely a few years too old to be her."

"Great, the search continues" I said.

Rebecca and I had no luck finding the girl that day. We were about to head back to the inn when Rebecca said, "I think that's her."

It was a young woman with red hair carrying a sabre on her back. This could very well be her.

"Let's follow her" I said. "Make our move when she gets out of the crowd. The last thing we need is attention."

We kept up for a minute but then we got stuck behind a crowd of people who wouldn't move and lost her.

"Excellent, this just gets better and better" I said.

"Don't give up now" Rebecca responded. "We'll find her soon enough."

We went down the street, getting out of the crowd, when Rebecca said "Wait. Hear that."

I listened. It sounded like some kind of struggle. We quickly rounded the corner. Some terribly-dressed man is sitting on the ground near the girl who seems to be held by a sword pinning her to a cart.

There wasn't time to really come up with a plan, so I had to hope Rebecca figured out what I was up to quickly. Luckily we'd gotten out of more than one tight spot with little planning before.

"What is going on here?" I asked, not entirely acting, since I really didn't know what had happened. I turned to Rebecca. "Help the young woman up and get her to safety. I'll make sure this man doesn't follow."

Hopefully I came across as a knight in shining armor to her. Although I had no problems fighting I also hoped this man wouldn't put up a fight. I was unfortunately unarmed. I knew Rebecca always kept a pistol on herself, but I'd lost my own through some circumstances in the past and hadn't picked up new ones yet.

Rebecca tried to pull the sword out of the cart. It seemed stuck. She finally just ended up tearing the girl free, ripping her clothes and picking her up.

"You're not going to cause any trouble are you?" I said to the man.

I've been in a lot worse situations than this. I know if they get too violent the noise could attract someone else to see what's going on.

I don't want to be a fool in this situation, but I can't really help myself.

"You know if my hands weren't tied, I'd knock you out for call R-" I catch myself from saying her name, as I don't want to reveal too much information, "her a 'piece' like that. Heck, she'd probably push me out of the way to do it herself if she was around. You better be glad you're in this situation."

I test the cart. I can tell why it was discarded here. It's in pretty bad shape and could probably be broken, but there's no way I'll be able to do it in my position.

---------------

Rebecca's Point of View

I'd really hoped Liliana would trust me and go along willingly, especially since I was another woman, but I guess having too many pirates and other lowlifes after you makes you suspicious of everyone, even at such a young age. Despite my problems with her father I harbored no ill will towards the girl herself but I had to get control of this quickly.

Making sure we were off to the side so no one would notice, I grab the knife I kept tucked in my skirt and made sure she felt it against her back.

"Just come with me quietly and you won't get hurt" I tell her, trying to sound threatening. She starts to resist so I poke the knife into her back hard, making sure my own body keeps it covered.

"Let's go" I say.

"Who are you?" she demands.

"We can talk later" I tell her.

I look back, waiting for Sam. Where is he? He should be coming up any minute now. The plan was to get the girl to come back to the inn if she would go along willingly, or if not, to take her to one of Sam's less reputable friends' places to hide out. Neither were extremely far away. But where was Sam?

A part of me said to just take the girl on to the hideout. But I really needed Sam's help, and he'd helped me out in some troublesome times.

"Move" I told Liliana, coming up with a backup plan in my head.

I looked around. Not far away there was a stack of barrels in an alley on the ocean side of town. Rope tied some of the barrels together. This was perfect. Almost.

I pushed Liliana to the alley. There wasn't much activity going on around here and it was fairly dark so it would take dumb luck for someone to see what was going on.

Liliana seemed to get the idea she needed to fight once I got her away from a crowd of people. She wrenched free and tried to hit me in the face, but I've had a lot more experience fighting than her, and against tougher opponents. I dodged the blow and she lost her balance. I pushed her down to the ground. Using her sword I cut off a strand of rope from the barrels and opened one up. Luckily it happened to be empty.

Liliana figured out what I was going to do. She scrambled to her feet. Sizing me up, waiting for the right opportunity. I let her make the first strike again. This one was a punch aimed for my stomach. I blocked it and wrapped the rope around her wrist. I tried to grab her other arm and bring it behind her back to tie her wrists together but she was really fighting. She might not have been the most dangerous opponent I'd ever faced but she was near the top of the feisty list.

"Let me go!" she cried out. She threw an elbow that caught me in the side hard enough to make me loosen my grip. If it hadn't been for the rope around her wrist she might have gotten away. She tried to pull free but I recovered before she unraveled it. She then made the mistake of going for her sabre again, which allowed me to grab her arm as I was quicker. She hit me in the chest and in the arm a couple of times with her free hand but I ignored the pain this time and pushed her to the ground. She kicked me in the leg once or twice as I flipped her over and crossed her arms and tied her wrists together. Finally I managed to cinch the rope.

"Get off me!" she cried out. "When I get loose I'm going to hurt--" I silenced her by tearing off a shred of her shirt where it had been torn earlier and stuffing it in her mouth. I needed something to tie it in place. I didn't want to tear her shirt further which left my own clothes. I used the knife and cut off some of the bottom of my skirt to make a strip. By this time Liliana had spit the gag out and her mouth was working again.

"If you know what's good for you you'll--" I cut her off again with the cloth, this time tying it in place with the strip from my skirt.

"Finally" I muttered. "That was harder than I thought." Liliana almost seemed proud of this for a minute, then scowled again.

I cut off another strand of rope and tied it around her pinioning her arms to her body. She kicked at me a few times as I did that. I really wanted to tie her legs but I was running out of rope and she wouldn't be running in the barrel anyway. She was going to give me some bruises.

"All right, time to get in the barrel" I told her. She squirmed mightily and it was a lot of work lifting her up. I finally had to heave her into the barrel, and she nearly fell in headfirst. I think the fall dazed her a bit because she didn't fight as much as I put the lid on the barrel. The lid was heavy and it was going to be very hard for her to get it off.

"Don't go anywhere" I said mockingly into the barrel. "I'll be back in a few minutes." With that I took off heading back to see what was keeping Sam.

I twist and grunt as i'm lowered towards a pool of feasting, carnivorous fish. A series of shouts are audible from the boardwalk behind. Maybe my captors are distract...What did it matter though. I can't escape these chains...

As my legs hit the water, I began to breathe deep, preparing for whatever would come.

Just then a robed figure appeared in a rowboat, coming towards me. I became confused. Who is that? Before I could get a good look at the hooded face, the snap of chains was heard above me. It was ....Harry....he cut the chains.

"I know you can't thank me now, but you owe me!"

The hooded form turned out to be Edgar, who must've escaped the sadistic guards. Together they pulled me in and we rowed quietly along the dock....

As our Edgar rowed along, and Harry slowly untied the many bonds fastening my arms. The mood was calm.

Edgar spoke up, "I heard that the captain's...I mean the murdered captains...daughter. She's free in Leiran somewhere-"

Just then, a loud crashing sound awakened our interests. All of a sudden a large object...a shark! No... a barrel....came rolling off the docks from above, landing hard in the water. Our small boat is summarily capsized..

Me, being still tied, begin to struggle to get free. I could drown....

As I sink, I pick out the form of a girl....with red hair. Am I hallucinating?

Just then, the ropes around my legs and arms seem to melt off. I swim to the girl's position. She's tied up as well, better though, unable to break free. I grab her arm and pull her. I can touch her. She is real.

When we reach the surface, Edgar and Harry have resettled the boat. They help me pull the wet heiress up into the plank and gum rowboat. A squirrel climbs out of her coat pocket and squeaks. As she comes to, coughing up water, the two other orphans look at me startled.

I pull down the gag around my mouth, and pull loose the satin undearwear logged inside. "I give you Liliana White, daughter of whitebeard, and heiress to his fortune."

"Did ya hear that? She made a sound." Harry was a little too excited about keeping the prisoner under control. He had already suggested tightening the poor girl's bonds, minutes after she had almost drowned. Now this.....

"Where's those knickers and that pillowcase, Jacky? We should at least gag her. She could alert the guards...." Harry had always been a little prick, but this was different. He was liking the part of the punisher a bit untastefully.

"How 'bout we put em' in your' mouth Harry? She's not made a peep yet. Leave her alone."

The grey squirrel has taken to Edgar well, just now the animal was crawling across his shoulders as he rowed us along. I have to smile, he's a good, likeable lad. This is all for those like him, those who deserve better.

Just then, a procession of sailors...no pirates pass on the deck above. I instinctively cover Liliana with a blanket; hopefully they wont see....

The commotion from above serves to remind me of how dangerous all of this is; I could have been fish food earlier.
"Alright Harry, gag her....as a precaution." The sadistic blond youth looked like Christmas had just come. He wasted no time
stuffing the satin underwear into the captives mouth, tying the pillowcase tightly between her teeth.

Edgar spoke up, "we're almost back now, help me pull the boat in." As we bump against the small pier, I hitch the fishing boat up to a post.

Harry and Edgar carry the bundled up person of interest into the abandoned tavern. The three remaining orphans gather around the blanket-shrouded bundle, filled with excitement.

Helya, the salty old woman shouts for silence. "Bring her...to me. Closer."

Harry sets the present down for his adoptive mother. She begins to stir. The old woman bends down to the girl's eye level. "If I pull this filthy thing in your mouth out, will you promise to be civil? This is an abandoned place, and far from prying ears...but still, I do value mine own ears, and dislike screaming, sobbing, and shouting..."

A trap door in the floor is thrown open. The murky water of the town flows several feet below. Two of the orphans ease the captive near it, and another affixes her wrists to a pulley system.

"This inn used to be a favorite haunt of many well-known smugglers. It was built right on the water, so that those wishing to come and go unseen could."
She looks at Liliana, and asks, "Will you not cooperate with us? Poor folks like us, we don't need all of the riches you've got hoarded. We could forget this nasty business, and split the treasure. Otherwise you may need some convincing. And there is nothing civil about it...."

Jack steps forward, "is this really necessary? I mean she just doesn't know us yet. Isn't there another way?"

The old matriarch stares Jack down with annoyance. "You forget yourself. Boys, I think our rich heiress here will not be alone in her 'swim.' Tie him up, and lower him to!"

“If you do this, you have gone too far. Harry, don't you have anything to say about this?”

The orphan shrugged and picked up a wad of cloth on the floor, “she's the boss, not you. I've always hated getting told what to do by you.”

“Har-mpy mrmmmph,” before long the cloth is stuffed inside my mouth and secured by a thick hempen rope tied between my teeth. Oddly though, he winks at me as he begins to lower us into the murky water. What was that?

I twist and writhe, but what I do? They have wrapped us in rope like a couple of absurd looking hempen mummies.

There is the sound of cheering and jeering from above. The orphans seem to be enjoying this show. And why shouldn't they? After all, it's not them stuck down here.

Just as our toes reach the waterline, the pulley suddenly stops. The sounds of a struggle can be heard.
What in davey jones' locker is going on up there?

The short orphan, Edgar, comes through the trap door and hits the water with a splash. I writhe and grunt to get his attention, maybe he can do something about all of this rope.....

The pulley system begins to lower me again as I notice that liliana has been cut loose somehow... I groan into the cloth as she swims away.Is she just going to let me drown? Some sense of gratitude....Then again, she didn't know I had saved her....

Edgar seems to be having his own troubles ..... He never learned how to swim, did he...

I twist and writhe, but it's no use, my limbs are wrapped in layers of rope.

Think. There's got to be a way...There are nails jutting off of nearby posts, if only I could catch one on my ropework....

Just then, a groan and creak of the floor above absorb my attention. That can't be good...

Rebecca had come up and whacked Cobham and the other one, whose name I'd surmised was Nat based on the fact that's what Cobham called him, over the head with a bucket she'd found. Cobham was out again. Nat had taken his blow better and was ready to fight but Rebecca showed him the pistol she carried.

"No, no" she said. "Don't try anything stupid."

Nat lunged for the gun. Rebecca dodged and kicked the back of his knee. Nat was now right in front of me. I gave him a hard kick to the head and he was now unconscious as well.

"Where in the world have you been?" I asked her as she used her knife to cut the ropes around my wrists.

"I got turned around" she said.

"Women, always getting lost" I muttered.

Rebecca wheeled and faced me. "Remember, I do still have a knife and a gun. You might want to think about what you say before I tie you back to that cart and leave you."

"I knew that'd annoy you" I said. "Let's get out of here."

"What about them?" Rebecca asked. "Maybe we should tie them up."

"Where'd you leave the girl?" I asked her.

"She's in a barrel a short walk from here" Rebecca replied.

"What's she--you know what, never mind. We better get back there fast. Let's just leave these two here"

Rebecca showed me where she'd left Liliana. As I was afraid, the girl was nowhere to be found. Rebecca on the other hand seemed quite surprised.

"I left her right here" she said. "She was tied up and gagged and shut up. How did she escape?"

"Somebody probably came by and heard her banging against the side of the barrel and released her" I said.

"We had her" Rebecca said. "Now what will we do?"

"We're certainly not going to find her again standing here" I said. "Come on."

Rebecca and I are wandering along, about ready to give up and head for the inn, when we see a young woman ahead of us stumbling along. Suddenly she falls to the ground. We race up to her.

"You think she's drunk--hold on a second, isn't this...HER?" I say.

"It's definitely Liliana" Rebecca, who knew what she looked like better than I did, replied.

"Is she all right?" I asked. While we needed her to tell us the location of the treasure, I had no reason to see the girl die in front of me.

"She's breathing" Rebecca said. "Let's get her out of here before someone sees us."

I picked Liliana up by the shoulders as Rebecca picked her up by the feet and we began carrying her. Luckily the streets were practically deserted this time of night, although I was ready with an explanation if we were stopped by anyone.

As we began carrying her I heard a noise. There was a squirrel on Liliana.

"Get out of here" I said. The squirrel hesitated, then went under the girl. I presumed the squirrel had dropped off and ran off and we kept on carrying her.

We headed for the hideout, at the edge of town, one of the first houses built when the colony had been established. It had taken some noticeable hurricane damage but was still more or less intact, and had been claimed by a friend of mine who used it as a hideout occasionally. It was also, fortunately, relatively close by.

We made it to the house without any incident and went inside. There wasn't much furniture in the house, a simple bed, few chairs, one table, and an old bookshelf which had no books anymore. We'd left some ropes and cloths here for what we were about to do.

We carried Liliana over to a support beam and set her on the floor. Taking some of the rope I tied her wrists together behind her back, around the beam. Rebecca tied her feet together. I then tied more rope around her arms to help keep her tied to the beam. Rebecca finished it off by tying a thick cloth in her mouth and knotting it tightly behind her head. We were away from most of the town but there was still a chance she could be heard if she screamed loud enough, especially in the daytime as people would be out.

"She really is out. You sure she's okay?" I asked.

"She's all right" Rebecca said.

We sat down in a couple of the chairs and waited for her to come around.

I awake in darkness. What the hell happened?

As I stir, I realize i'm still wrapped in rope, though not attached to anything. Easy does it...if I can just roll myself onto that board...
With some effort, i'm on my feet, hopping across wreckage. The whole block seems to have collapsed. I hope everyone made it out alive...

My fears are put to rest when I spot a contingent of orphans marching along the boardwalk beyond. Leading them, a hunched woman in a baby blue shawl, leaning on a oaken cane. I can't let them see me...

I begin to quicken my pace of hopping, not paying the necessary attention to my landing, and thus slide off a section of drift into the murky water below. I've got to survive this...But how...? Knowing it is no good to thrash, I remain still, trying to think of a way out of drowning....

"Hey, she's awake."

I stirred from the sleep I'd started to enter into myself at the sound of Rebecca's voice. It took me a few seconds to remember where I was.

I got up and walked over to Liliana, who'd started crying.

"I'm going to take the gag out" I said. "Make any loud noises and it goes back in. We just didn't want you crying out. I don't think anyone could hear you anyway so don't bother trying. Do you understand?"

She stopped crying a bit and glared at me, but nodded. I untied the cloth from her mouth.

"You've had a bit of a rough day" I said, noting her scratches.

Rebecca moved in closer. "Liliana White" she said. "I don't think you know who I am. But our fathers knew each other."

The kick to my shin hurt quite a bit. I didn't think Liliana could kick that hard. But I'd taken worse and recovered pretty quickly enough to pull her off when she tackled Rebecca.

I took an elbow to the ribs but managed to hang on to Liliana enough to keep her from getting away and pinned her down to the floor as Rebecca recovered and got some of the rope again.

"Calm down" I said, but it didn't do any good. Liliana kept fighting and I took another couple of elbow shots.

Rebecca came over with the rope as I finally got Liliana under control, despite the bloody nose I now had from one of her elbows.

"You can have your father's sword back later" Rebecca said. "We have no intentions of hurting you or stealing your father's sword or even taking his entire treasure. I just want the portion that rightfully belonged to my own father, that should belong to me now. But we have to make sure you're not going to attack us." She knelt down and started to tie Liliana's hands again.

About that moment a squirrel jumped on my shoulders. It was the same squirrel from before, which I thought had jumped off Liliana earlier. Apparently I was wrong. I instinctively flinched causing me to loosen my grip on the girl.

I awake from my presumed death on a lavish mattress. The air is still and salty. Is this what death feels like?

Then, all of a sudden, a large dog plops himself onto my chest. He licks my face, and I begin to become aware of a woman in the bed next to me...her hair is red, her stomach large...

I am rudely brought back to reality by the sharp pounding of Edgar on my chest. The orphan seems to have succeeded in saving me, once again. I groan and sit up.

"I learned how to swim!" Edgar exclaimed gladly.

"I can see that. Thanks." I rub the rope burns on my arms and stand. "We need to go find her, before the others. I don't know who to trust now, except for you, I suppose."

"Well, I know where she was last seen..." The youth brought me to the rougher side of town. Only a few shacks had fires burning, so finding the one with excited conversation was not difficult. From a hole in the wall boards, we can see the heiress being pulled up into a chair and fastened to it.

"We'll have to do this right, or she could get hurt. Those two look like they wouldn't think twice about using their steel."

I followed Liliana out of the house where she had collapsed, crying. I had a little pity for her. She was really being used as a pawn, and though I had my fair share of questionable activities in the past, I tried my best not to hurt innocent people. But I also knew Rebecca really needed to find the treasure and I had owed her some payback for some favors.

I gently picked up Liliana and took her back inside the house. Her wrist bonds hadn't really been knotted well but she hadn't gotten free yet. I took her over to one of the chairs and Rebecca and I tied her to it.

Once we'd secured Liliana Rebecca did most of the talking. She pulled out the sword. I got the idea to cover Liliana's mouth before she cried out again.

"You'll get your father's sword back soon enough" Rebecca said. "I'm not here to steal a sword. I'm not even here to steal all the treasure. But I know your father took some of my family's possessions years ago and they're part of the treasure. I just want that back. We're not going to hurt you. I have no problem with..."

I held up my hand to stop her. "I could've sworn I heard someone outside" I said quietly.

Rebecca had the only weapons. She tossed me the pistol and held up Liliana's father's sword. I quickly tied a cloth back in Liliana's mouth, keeping her from uttering more than a meek cry before I got the gag in. We started towards the door when I stopped. I could see movement, in a hole in the wall.

I motioned to Rebecca and we both ducked behind some furniture, ready for whoever was out there in case they decided to come inside.

Edgar nudged my shoulder. He had smoke bombs made from some trader's salts. This variety had been spiced with habanero peppers, the better to incapacitate.

The inventive kid broke the packs open, mixing the solutions, and tossed them through the poorly thatched roof.

"Now we wait for them come out. Get ready. Is your rune stone equipped?"

He nods, grinning.

I slam my fist against the oaken door. "COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP. WE DON"T WANT TO HAVE TO DO ANYTHING RASH BUT DAMMIT IF I WON'T."

"Who in the world is that?" Rebecca whispered. "Soldiers? They haven't found you have they?"

"Not soldiers" I said. "Don't know who."

"Maybe it's..." Rebecca stopped, coughing a bit. She got up and stumbled forward. I realized there was smoke filling the room.

"What the..." I coughed once, then quickly moved away from the smoke and managed to get out before it affected me too bad. Rebecca wasn't so lucky. Whatever it was had hit her pretty hard. That's when it hit me it was some kind of smoke bomb. She stumbled towards the door.

"NO, Rebecca, stop!" I shouted, but it was too late.

Forgetting completely about Liliana for the moment, I pulled out the pistol and barged through the door.

Rebecca was grabbed by someone who held her arms. Affected by the smoke bomb, she couldn't really put up a fight at the moment.

"Let her go" I said, pointing the pistol at the man holding her.

A vase shatters over the head of the guy holding the pistol. I pull down my bandanna as the smoke files out the door. I see Liliiana tied to a nearby chair. "Good work Edgar. Now help me with this one." I gently drag the woman over the sword she'd dropped, still struggling, to a chair and fasten her to it with strips of hide and cloth. "Edgar, find something to muffle them with, ok?" I give the kid a glance, then nod my head at the tied twosome. He wastes no time re-purposing their stockings for gags.

I walk over to the other side of a table to check on Liliana, lifting her chin and asking, "Are you alright?"

Epilogue: As Edgar and I escorted Liliana aboard a ship under the docks, we were taken captive by Redeye.

We were split off at a "servant" auction, where I was sold to the mayor's house to scrub floor, and Edgar and Liliana were taken by the East Indies trading company. I heard they were being taken to the New World.

When I escape, I will find them....

"You, why aren't you finished yet!?" A bloodcurdling voice calls.

"There's a lot to do, and these brushes suck. I'll work harder." There's no reason to upset Mistress Katlyn. The mayor's wife definitely kept a tight house. She can be dangerous when provoked. Or even when she isn't.

"Are you talking back to me?" I hear the sound of something slipping off her legs and turn just as a pair or nylons enter my mouth. Katlyn places her legs around my torso and presses her hand against my mouth. "Taste those, and think of how you did this to yourself, you demented pervert."

I sigh into the gag, and take it in stride. One day.
