Sydney Siege

Postby 31acujoker » Mon Dec 15, 2014 2:14 pm

In the last 24 hours, Australia got it's first taste of Jihadist terrorism, Mon Manis, an Iranian man who's been given asylum here in Australia, chose to repay our generous country by taking several hostages in the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in Sydney. For 17 hours he held them, demanding to speak to our Prime Minister Tony Abbott, and for an ISIS flag to be delivered to him so he could display his support for the terrorist group. Early his morning the hostages tried to escape while he was asleep, but he was woken up and started shooting, the police stormed the building and Manis was killed, but sadly, two innocent people have been killed.

I should be feeling hatred towards this man, but instead I am just sad, sad that he feels he can ruin the image of a peaceful religion by performing such inhuman acts in the name of Islam, and sad that he felt that the best way to display himself to the world was by hiding behind a young woman, using her as a human shield, and taking the lives of two people who had never done him or his people any harm.

To any Muslim people who may read this, and even if you don't, I do not feel a shred of hatred or resentment towards you, and it saddens me that innocent Muslims have suffered and will suffer because of the cruel actions of a few impostors.

And to all who read this, no matter who you are, where you are in the world, by what name you call God, or if you don't believe in God at all, and who you choose to love, just know this, I love you. I love you as a human being and if we all stand together then these evil people will never break our resolve.

I don't feel hatred towards Islamic people either. To me, this violence is no better than the Templars back during the Crusades to reclaim the holy land. All religions have seen violence throughout the decade, so I blame this violence on people as individuals.

But it does worry me that it will eventually hit the United States soon. I posted an article in Jump in the Fire that is about a young girl getting burned alive. The linked article suggests that an Islamic terrorist might be involved. This happened really close to where I live(about an hour away).

But I see the potential in this becoming a heated topic, so it may be better in Jump in the Fire. I don't think it is your intention for it to get that way, but it could.

I have no intention to turn this into a political debate, so if you want to talk about that, then go ahead, but I simply posted this to convey my feelings about this tragic event.

I shall repeat here what I wrote in the other thread...

A terrible situation and tragic conclusion.
I am glad that most of the public discussion here has not devolved into arguments about terrorists, Muslims and refugees.
This was a creep acting alone and using politics and religion to act on his own agenda. The main debate is over why this creature was out on bail while facing rape and accessory to murder charges... but that is a complex issue as well.

I shall add here... People have been criticizing the judiciary because he was out on bail. I agree that he should have been kept in remand. The problem is that we are a civilized society, and remand is not a punishment. Unless it can be shown that the defendant presents a clear and present danger or is a genuine flight risk, since he has not been found guilty of a crime he should have the right to bail. I would hate to see people locked up until a court trial 18 months down the track proves them innocent.

Excellent point sarobah, I'm also glad we can have a civilised chat on here without it dissolving into a mindless war of words.

I also agree as a Justice student that if we do not treat everybody equally in the eyes of the law, then we are no better than the people who try to disrupt our society in the first place. Could this horrible day have been prevented if he was held in remand? Maybe, we'll never know what might have happened, but we can only look forward to strengthening our bond as a unified nation

By the way, when I wrote "I am glad that most of the public discussion here has not devolved into arguments about terrorists, Muslims and refugees", I meant here = Australia, not here = this thread. But both interpretations work.

Ah ok, but yes you're right they do both work :) And it is good to see I couldn't agree more

I just watched a piece of garbage on Youtube from Russell Brand. (I won't link to it.)
The biggest thing that idiot has done in his life was to be married to Katy Perry for about a weekend. Now he's lecturing Australians on how to react to the tragedy... which in typical Brand style is to find the whole thing rather funny. (Laughing about dead hostages... way to be classy.)

I don't find much to be proud about as an Australian these days. But I think on the whole we have reacted with dignity and moderation, despite attempts by trouble-making foreigners like [I won't mention his name again] doing their best to incite extremists on both sides.

Okay, rage has been vented :o)

Despite incidents like this I still get the feeling that Australia is a better place to live overall (except maybe the hottest parts of the Outback) than much of the United States.

Well I can't blame you for making that statement, I do feel lucky to live where I do, I've never been to the US so I can't really make a comparison, but really I think both countries have their good and bad qualities just like any other country

As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side of the ocean. 8)
Well, in your case the Outback disqualifies you I suppose, but I'll bet people there are always friendlier than here; they sure were in the parts of Europe I got to go to.

Yeah, if anything I find people in the country and outback are friendlier than city folks... unless you decide you wanna move from the city to their community hahaha

Just to confirm this topic has something to do with the overall name of this forum I would propose a more interesting side issue would be the normal wearing of rubber ball for gags by Australian Muslim women under their burkas when they are out and about.

I find this subject quite fascinating and always closely observe then when one passes me by to see if I can make out the lines of a gag strap or face harness through the slit they have to look through.
I have been rewarded quite a few times to see the lady that lives down the street from me go out for a walk to the shopping mall. Through the slit for her eyes I can usually plainly see the two thin brown leather straps either side of her the bridge of her nose that connect from her strap through the rubber ball with the vertical strap up her forehead to keep her rubber ball securely in her mouth.
She seems not to mind that other people can see her gag harness or perhaps doesn't realise it is visible as she doesn't seem too intelligent anyway on the occasions I have met her at the mall only answering my questions as to her health with grunts of approval or otherwise.
Also to keep the hems of their burkas getting too dusty many such women wear shoes with extremely high heels, their ankles plainly showing their rope marks - something I find quite distasteful to think an Australian woman would be subject to this sort of treatment.
Keep a lookout and see what I mean

Anybody who saw the TV of the NSW police storming the 'Bastille' like a bumbling swat team in a Channel 9 American TV crime sitcom would surely wear a T shirt emblazoned with "If I am caught in a hostage situation please don't use the NSW police to rescue me"

They are no better than they were when I left that state 40 years ago!
