Would the US ever use a nuke on North Korea?

Postby vantran » Fri Apr 05, 2013 7:48 am

Know that the fallout would be massive and cause political, economic, social, geographical outcry?

Doubtfull. I don't think they would need it to bring north Korea down. Its equipment is still from the cold war.

No that's insane because:
1. It would harm neighbors and foreign allies South Korea and Japan.
2. It would harm China/Russia who the US needs on their side
3. No need for it, the UN could wipe out NK easily. China could if they stopped sending foreign aid.

Probably not, considering what we have as president. Even if the North Koreans nuked South Korea, Japan, Alaska, or Hawaii, I think all Obama would do, would be to wail to the useless nabobs (UN), who would wring their hands, make a lot of speeches, and do absolutely nothing. If we did retaliate, that bunch of idiots would probably pass sanctions against us.

True. If North Korea colapses both South Korea and China will be flooded with refugees which they won't be happy about. Also if the North falls the south might have to take over which would be very problamatic for them.

Ok Drawscore you're going to have to explain that one to me. I know you don't like Obama but no way would he let a nuclear strike pass. (It should be said that HOPEFULLY, if NK ever DID launch a nuke, the missile defence system would work). Obviously the UN do nothing to shake off the image of useless bureaucrats, but even they would be hard pressed to not act strongly in such a situation.

The US does have a problem with using nukes on North Korea - do they have one small enough? As Scotstud pointed out, there are too many big players nearby and you would not want the fallout getting to them. Then you have to consider the people. Unfortunately, we have to give a damn about the North Korean civilians because their Government sure as hell doesn't.

Kim Jong Un's number one priority is to stay in power and his chosen method for doing that is frequent displays of military strength. War however is still unlikely because current theory is that even South Korea alone could kick their ass, and the US has made clear they will jump to the defence of their allies (and Britain will jump to the defence of their allies...) Deep down, Kim Jong Un knows this - he just doesn't want the people of his country to know. So he shows them a video of him ordering troops around a rocket and of his army kicking their feet in the air and that placates them for a little while.

So I'm leaning towards "no" in answer to the question but... there was the word "ever", in the question, and forever is a long time.

Games, I just simply do not believe that Obama has the stones to retaliate, even with just conventional weapons. I hope I don't ever have to find out. I think he is weak, and that he has shown the military, who protect him, little more than disdain and contempt.

The last time the UN showed any strength, was in 1950, when they authorized force to repel the invasion of South Korea by the north. And then, the only reason that happened, is because the Soviet Union walked out on the discussion, and was not present to veto the resolution. The last UN Secretaries General that had any balls, were the first two, Trygve Lie (Norway) and Dag Hammarskjöld (Sweden).

Now, even if NK did nuke the south, or Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, or the west coast, it could probably be taken down without a retaliatory nuke strike. (Although nuclear retaliation would certainly get the world's attention.) In the global community, it might be regarded as using a sledge hammer to kill a fly, and the "usual suspects" (Russia and its affiliates/satellites; China, Cuba, Venezuela, the Muslim middle east, France, etc.) would align against us. Of course, no matter what we do, they would line up against us.

I think you're right in your assessment that Kim Jong Un's first priority is to maintain power. To do so, he must have the support of the military, so he engages in a bit of "saber rattling" to pacify the generals and admirals, and gives them the OK to attack the US. Hopefully, wiser heads will prevail. As dedicated to communism as NK's senior military officers might be, I'm sure they know that Pyongyang would look like a wasteland after a wave of US stealth bombers dropped their full loads of conventional bombs, and US stealth fighter jets took out most of NK's air force. I don't think they'd want to take that chance.

I think that before North Korea would ever launch such an attack,
the Chinese would have the means to squelch it. It is not that
they have become gentle pacifists or virtuous protectors of freedom.

They are in business to make money and increase the power and prestige
of China. It is not a nice business model, but it exists.

I feel that one day we shall wake up to find the current "beloved" leader
of North Korea to have taken a permanent "retirement" from his position.

Compared to the Chinese leadership, Michael Coreleone would be a stand in for Mr. Rogers.

The government is crazy enough, so yes.
But why are you all panicking? NK is just doing the same thing as Russia, Usa, Israel,... were doing.
SK provocated NK over the last years, so it would be only fair, if NK is allowed to do the same.
We should have in mind, that those people, who've reported those information about NK, have also made the lies about the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq or the nuclear weapons in Iran. So those Information have to be treated with caution.

Aren't it the North Koreans themselves who proudly declare how dangerous they are? Doesn't make it any less wrong information but its worth noting.

The U.S is in a kind of "if you do it watch out" sort of state. We'll get really mad if they nuke us, and then our excuse will be "in our defence, we must fight back". And BOOM. There went North Korea. In my opinion, people should not nuke people. Death=Bad. It's a simple concept.

In America's defense they were atomic weapons (not nuclear), and used only as an act to end what would've been a very long and bloody capture of Japan. After Hiroshima Japan still didnt surrender so that 2nd strike is completely on them.

The real danger is that enough mad men my come to the fore in North Korea to push their oversized army over the 38th parallel. N ot intending to precipitate a nuclear war, but to sacrifice a hundred thousand ground forces to grab a piece of South Korea just to show the region that they can do it. We do not have the ground forces in South Korea to stop North Korea's million man army. Couple that with their undeniable advances toward nuclear capabilities, well, they would have some serious bargaining chips at their disposal.

President Truman politicized our military when he fired General MacArthur. MacArthur wanted to push the communists to the Yalu River and Tulem River, and if Truman had let the military do just that, we would have one Korea today. But Truman thought it would be better to go to the bargaining table for 50 years.

We could have one Korea if Truman did that. We could. We could also have the destruction of the human race if he did that :big: The cold war sure had an added bonus to keep things interesting!

Nukes tend to have a lot of collateral. If we want to take down some insaine tyrant, countless people shouldn't die for that. If it was such a casual thing then we would've finished Japan, and Getmany too. But we didn't, and they're alright now.

How is "insane tyrant" defined? and who is allowed to define this? AND WHO can say that someone is an insane tyran?

Nukes have too much collateral to work. It's better to develop a guaranteed defense than waste time in making them bigger.

Exactly. The call to state them as a deterrent ignores the reality should they actually be used. Besides, no amount of Western nuclear deterrent has stop North Korea from fulfilling its task

No the people of north Korea are victims of the north korean dictatorship too remember all the footage of them crying when Kim Jon ill died wasnt because of how sad they were it was because they would have been given 6 months hard labour in The gulags if they didn't show extreme sadness, half the country us starving to death
If the US were to do anything they'd probably send in a black ops team in to eliminate as much of the high up boys as possible, then the UN would be able to get the food an medical supplies to the people. As well as install new government that would do its job and look after thep people

Unfortunately won't ever happen as long as we let Red China have its way. Red China is the major reason we had wars in Vietnam and Korea, and we wound up victorious in neither conflict. Until Red China ends its own interference there, nothing will ever improve there.

They may be dabbling with Capitalism, but officially the government is controlled solely by the Communist Party. Hence, I still call it Red China. That isn't what they call themselves of course. They call themselves a People's Republic, even though they're no more a Republic any more than the National Socialist German Workers' Party (aka the Nazi party) were Socialists.
