In the shop

Sam stood in front of the full-length mirror in a fitting room in the boy’s section of a dress-shop. He was wearing a denim-coloured, long sleeved dress, which was made of a very tight-fitting, denim-fabric from the waste up, and a ankle-length skirt-part made of crushed velvet, and it had a bright red bow at the top of his legs, and the ends of the sleeves felt like there was something metallic inside them.
“It looks so nice on you, dear!” his mother said. “Don’t you think so?”
“Yea, I suppose so.” Sam answered his mother in an indifferent voice. He would much rather have tried on one of the knee-length, green denim-skirts, with matching wrist- and ankle-cuffs, like the ones his friends wore when not in school, and had even said so, the minute they walked in the store. ‘I won’t be able to run around and play in this thing!’ he thought, desperately. ‘I really hope she won’t buy it!’

At that moment, the middle-aged female sales assistant looked in from behind the curtain.
“A very good choice that dress is, Mrs Olsen!” she chirped. She really did sound like she had a birds-nest stuck in her throat. “It has a number of special features, you know.”
“Yes, I gathered as much from reading the sign.” Mrs Olsen dryly said. “I wonder what they are, though, because all I can see is a standard boy’s dress, albeit a very nice one, and at a very affordable price.”
The sales assistant gave Mrs Olsen a frosty smile, and came and stood directly behind Sam and said: “This bow is more than a decoration, you know. It is actually a string, with which you can make the skirt-part tighter, to the point where he will be virtually unable to keep his balance without assistance. Here, I’ll show you!”
He could feel her tampering with, and pulling on, something at the back of the skirt, and suddenly it had tightened so much he almost fell over by surprise. “I can’t make it any tighter, I’m afraid.” she said, while she huffed like an old steam engine. “But I can assure you, that it is quite tight enough. He will only be able to take the smallest of steps, and running is, of course, out of the question. Another feature, that might interest you are the sleeves. They are actually magnetic! If you put his wrists together, the strong magnets sewn into the sleeves will pull them even closer together until they touch, and he will not be able to pull his hands apart, no matter how hard he tries!”
While she had been talking, she had done just that, and now Sam wasn’t even able to use his hands any more.

They all went out of the fitting room, and Mrs Olsen said: “This is all very nice. I’ll buy two of those, I think, and two of those knee-length skirts, that seems to be so popular nowadays. Not forgetting matching, woolly pantyhose, of course.”
“Thank you mother,” Tom well-behaved said.
When they stood at the check-out and Mrs Olsen was ready to pay for all of her purchases, she saw a peculiar hat. It looked like a regular, knitted wool hat, but it had what looked like a bulky chin-strap.
“What a peculiar hat?” she said.
“Yes, it does look a bit peculiar, I have to admit. But when worn, it actually has an added feature. Do you see the strap? It actually is a gag! Put it in a child’s mouth, fasten it with on the button on the other side, and it will fill the child’s mouth to the point, it will not be able to speak a word. Isn’t that clever?”
“Yes, very!” Mrs Olsen said. “I think I’ll have one of those, as well. And could you please send it all to this address?”
“Yes, of course! Thank you for shopping with us, and I hope you will come back soon. Have a nice day.”
“Why, thank you! I will! And I will come back soon. I have two more kids to equip. They’ve all grown so very fast, none of their clothes seems to fit them anymore! Good Bye!”
Whazzzz up!.
