E-BAY ACCOUNT -- READ THIS --VIP

Postby tony2 » Thu Jun 26, 2014 11:41 pm

EBAY notified me that their name and retained passwords files had been hacked. IF YOU USE EBAY CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD NOW. IF YOU HAVE AUTO PROCESSING THROUGH PAYPAL CHANGE YOUR EBAY PASSWORD YESTERDAY.
If you believe in yourself enough -
nobody else will figure out you're faking it.

All the more reason for us to help and protect each other. i put the word out within hours of getting the news because I knew there would be people in our group who needed to know right away.
Take 5 and look at some of the response: Nah Nah criticism because some knew about this a month sooner. But what did they do with that info to help others? Perhaps looking out for one another is something learned with age.

Seriously, criticising someone for trying to help is not nice. If tony didn't get the mail until now there are probably others (like me) for which the same is true.

Hence is why it was on the news, with the number of accounts that were effected i bet it made it onto the news in every country.....

I don't follow the news that much, it is easy for me to miss something. Someone might be on holiday and miss it for that reason. Or whatever, there are reasons why someone could miss that information.

But that is beside the point. Tony tried to help. I don't see the point of criticising him for that. If you knew it already, you can just ignore the thread.

Thanks Felix, it was people like us I posted it for, not for one who is as omniscient and omnipotent as cloud presumes to be. I must ask myself though, if a person like cloud was aware of this and common knowledge indicates a vast amount of people on e-bay, did he not care enough about others, presumed to be friends, to repeat the warning to make sure they didn't miss it?
i must admit though, when I was 19 I was probably a pretty inconsiderate asshole too.

well this escalated... anyway just most people who use ebay already knew about this, and the reason i didnt post anything wasnt cause i was inconsiderate or didn't care about everyone else, but because i assumed everyone else knew. and i guess that's why no-one else posted about this either.

im not saying there's anything wrong with warning people, just that this happened a while ago and i *thought* everyone already knew.

Well, maybe everyone i did tell about it already knew either from the e-mail that e-bay has sent out or from the news (on multiple different sources and not just the main news), maybe also people knew from their antivirus (i have Avast) which I know some like mine occasionally bring up small alerts for major internet hacking stuff like this incident. If everyone i speak to already knows then why would I feel the need to come to a site where it is totally off topic and one which i visit sometimes once a week if im lucky, just to tell people who i assumed (as computer users) would already know about it.

No one gives a crap about your friend who knew about it, or my uncle who knew about it, or his grandma who knew about it, or Rafiki's pet gerbil who knew about it! The point is, if this message helps someone, then GOOD!
If it doesn't, it's not doing any harm...so let's just leave it be and crack a smile at Tony2's benevolent spirit.

This old man has a story to tell, so gather round and draw parallels.
I was running through a thing that I believe is called "The Facebook" about three weeks ago.
I noticed a notification that a job in catering was available.
I don't often visit the site, being more used to perusing my collection of velum manuscripts, and the notification had been "posted" ( I believe they call it ) well over a week ago.
Should i tell my friend, "H" about it? No, indeed such a young person would surely have noticed it?
Nevertheless, I released one of my carrier pigeons with a note round its leg, just in case.
"H" had not noticed it; she now has a job in catering.

All of the account information on Ebay got hacked, but only one person got an e-mail about it, and this isn't plastered all over the news? This sounds like someone is scamming you.

According to "cloud" that info apparently was as publicized as "JAPAN SURRENDERS" over a month earlier, yet I and a few other brave souls, didn't see it.
I validated it with eBay before putting it here and after I changed my own PW.
Thanks for the input. Scams like this have been around since Chicken Little and they should be validated first --- directly with the business, NEVER USE A "CLICK HERE TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD. :(

If Ebay is really this slow to alert its customers, you should quit using the site immediately. Most places will send out a mass e-mail to everyone immediately upon realizing there's been a hacking.

Actually Kyle it is Federal law if it is discovered that exposure to classified data (ssn, cc numbers, passwords, etc) has occurred AND it may affect more than 500 people the company MUST contact the potentially affected members within (a low number - can't pull that off the top of my head) days of their discovery.
I'm guessing that the delay was caused by the company (eBay) validating the actual exposure. News sources don't have that problem. They can beat the drum as soon as they can find a "reliable source." That would explain the news carrying the story a month ahead of the company's formal warning.

A good company will send out messages to their customers as soon as they're aware of a security breach. If they don't do that, they aren't at all concerned about your security and I personally would recommend taking notice of that fact, but of course people have to make their own decisions.

Hi Kyle-
There is a balancing act that is performed. The corporate computer hacks are widespread and the constant release of hacked information brings up the same negative feelings about a company you are now expressing. So companies don't want to release it unless there is a proven release of sensitive customer information. The privacy act I cited above is a compromise passed into law. BTW, most of the corporate hacks, last time I checked on it, were coming from China. The President a few months ago called China on the carpet about it and I suspect they may have rounded up a few small fry and shot them to prove China cares.....

the news found out about this on 21 may. i got an email from ebay on 25 may, which is probably when everyone else got their email. i dont see why you'd get an email so late. unless the first one somehow ended up in your spam and then got auto deleted after 30 days.

anyway im not going to stop using one of the best online shops. ebay are very popular and if they weren't trustworthy they wouldn't be so popular...

Most any other company with halfway reputable customer service will alert customers very quickly after there's been a hack because they won't have any idea whose information has been stolen and they have to alert everyone. If Ebay didn't do this, their customer service is beyond terrible.

It might be they had different validation issues for England and the US. in fact they have separate companies for US/Canada and EU. Just guessing here though.

Well folks, i think we've beat this horse to death, unless anyone else has anything for the good of the order. A lot has come out and I think a lot has been learned through sharing. Good job to all.

Now let's move on and pick on something else.
