Robert and I

I and Robert, a boy in my 5th grade class, were asked by our teacher Mr. Smith, if we wanted to show him and the rest of the class something the following day.
We looked at each other. I saw a not too athletic, average height, average weight boy, with thin, dark brown hair, cut just below his slightly protruding ears, green eyes and an almost lip-less mouth. He was dressed in the school uniform, in his case a red sweater and knee high socks, and blue ¾-length trousers, a red parkas and a pair of light brown leather boots. He is one of those quiet ones you almost forget about, as soon as you turn away.
What he saw was a girl, only slightly shorter than him, slim, also with dark brown hair, only mine is thick and reaches my waist. My eyes are of mixed colours, although mostly blue. When in school, I wear a red long-sleeved, cotton blouse, and a blue woolly, ankle-long skirt, with a very long, wide satin ribbon tightly wound a couple of times around my waist, and knotted off in the back with a huge bow-tie, and several white petticoats. I also wear a pair of woolly pantyhose, a red knee-long coat and a pair of boots with a long row of small buttons on the outside of them.
When I’m not in school, I usually wear jeans and a sweater, or a t-shirt, and maybe a jacket, depending on the weather.

“Of course, Mr Smith!” we said, with one mouth. Only a fool (or maybe Mrs. Smith) says no to Mr. Smith, because he is a giant of a man, well over two meters tall and probably weighing in just shy of the 130 kilogram mark. And it’s not because he’s fat; as a member of a pro-football team (and I don’t mean the European variety) he needs to be extremely fit and muscular; but having said that, you will have to look very long and very hard to find a man who is kinder, gentler or more considerate. When off the football field, he couldn’t hurt a fly.
He was as usual dressed in a grey three-piece suit, which as usual threatened to burst at the seams. He gave Robert a standard size plastic bag, which almost disappeared in his hands, and said:
“I want you to work as a team, and I don’t want you to look inside this bag until you get home. Tomorrow, I want you to tell me, and the rest of the class, what fields of application there might be for the contents of this bag. I’ll go so far as to give you a tip: you might have to think OUTSIDE the box to get all the, both obvious and not so obvious, solutions to this one. Good luck to you! I look forward to your report in the morning.” He gave us an impish smile, and left us standing there.

“OK!” Robert said,” Your place, or mine?”
We agreed to go to his place as it was closer, and we were really curious as to what the bag contained. When Robert shook it there was a clanking sound, as if it contained metal of some kind, and it was quite heavy.

The bag contained a very long piece of rope, as much chain, a large handkerchief, two long strips of cloth, and some locks with keys obviously belonging to them.
“Well, this is easy!” Robert said. “You obviously use the rope, chain and/or strips of cloth to hold things together, depending on size and weight. The handkerchief you can use to blow your nose, or wipe the sweat off your face. Easy-peasy; jobs’ done!”
“NOT so fast, young man!” I said, holding up my hand. ”He told us to think outside the box too; remember? This,” I said, holding up the handkerchief,” could also be used like this.” I told him to open his mouth, and I put the handkerchief deep inside. “One of these, you could just as easily wind around your head to hold it in, thus creating what’s known as a cloth-gag. Get it?”
“Oef.” He muttered through the gag, and nodded.
“You might want to sit down, when I show you what could be done with the chain and rope.” I told him. He sat down in the desk-chair, and I grabbed the rope, chain, one of the locks, and the last strip of cloth and stood behind him. I used the strip to blindfold him; then I grabbed his arms and brought them together behind the back of the chair and, using the chain, tied them together and to his waist. I stepped in front of him and padlocked the two ends of the chain together. When I looked at his face, it had a distinct ‘what the hell are you doing?’ expression.
” I’ll explain later, when I’m done.” I promised.
Still in front of him, I knelt down and wound the rope around the lower part of his legs, tying it off just below the knees. I got to my feet, and inspected my work. He was snugly, but not too tightly, secured to the chair, and the chain around his wrists and waist meant he probably wouldn’t be able to get free. Not without the assistance of someone else, that is.
And although the gag was fastened deep inside his mouth, the sheer size of it probably meant it wouldn’t get stuck somewhere where it could cause him any serious problems breathing. The way I saw it, the only problem he could face was staying awake because of the blindfold.

“I hope you don’t mind me leaving you like this for a while? I have to go home and change into something a bit more comfortable. I’ll be back as soon as I possibly can; OK?”
He shrugged and I left him, taking his keys with me, so I could get back in. I went home, took off my skirt and blouse, but kept the pantyhose on. I put on an old pair of tight, blue jeans, and a pink sweater. As it was winter, I also put on a one-piece ski-suit. When I returned to his house forty-five minutes later, he was still sitting tied to the chair, but now his father had arrived home from work.
I waved at him and said:”Hello, Mr. Jones. How are you?”
“Hello there, Jennifer. I’m fine thanks,” he replied. “What have you done to Robert?”
“Oh, ah, um” I stuttered, “it’s something our teacher, Mr. Smith, asked us to do a report on! He told us to find out how many uses there are for a long piece of chain, a long piece of rope, two strips of cloth, and a handkerchief. And he told us to think outside the box, as well.”
“Well, you have certainly thought way outside the box, by the looks of it!” Mr. Jones said, with a smile. “By the way, how long has he been tied up for?”
I checked my watch. “For just under an hour.” I replied.
“M-hm, I see! Well, then you’d better get out of that ski-suit and get in to his room. I’m sure he’s more than ready with his part of your report; aren’t you?”
“Well, yes sir. I suppose so.” I said, and quickly did as he asked.

The first thing I did, when I got in to Robert, was take out the gag and ask him how he was doing, and if he wanted to get out of the chair. He said he was doing fine, but was more than ready to get out of the chair.
I went over to him, and slowly began untying him, starting with the rope around the lower part of his legs. I took my time, carefully making a neat bundle of it, before getting started on the chain holding his wrists together and to the back of the chair. That way, it took about ten minutes for him to be able to get to his feet again.
When he had, he asked as he tore way the blindfold:”You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”
Looking completely innocent, I asked: “What do you mean? Did what on purpose?”
“Getting the rope and chain off of me, of course!” he barked.
“I worked as fast as I possibly could! Those were very complicated knots and twists. I deliberately made them that way, so no one but me could get you free!” I said, trying to sound as if I was very hurt by his accusations.
“That wasn’t what my father said! I think we’re done researching this matter. Don’t you?” Robert snapped.
“Yea! I think so, too!” I snapped back, turned around and ran past a surprised Mr. Jones, and out the door, stopping just long enough to get my ski-suit back on.

The next day, during the first class, it was time for Robert and me to tell Mr. Smith, and the rest of the class, what we had come up with. I was a bit scared, as I didn’t know if he had gotten over what I did to him yesterday. However, Robert seemed fine, and the presentation went as smoothly as you could ever wish for. Until we came to the alternate uses for the things we had in front of us, which was the part I had feared the most. I was about to do again what I had done yesterday, when he grabbed the handkerchief, and put it in my mouth, tying it in place with one of the strips.

“Guys,” he jokingly said,” pay extra attention now! I’m about to show you what else you can use this stuff. You saw me putting the handkerchief in her mouth and tie it in place with one of the strips of fabric. Now, if you don’t want her to take it out again (and of course you don’t want that, because by now, she’s well on her way to getting really pissed off) you can use the chain, and tie them together. Right? Preferably behind her back, so she can’t take a swing at you!
And to further increase your safety, you can take the left-over chain, wrap it around her waist, like so,” while he talked, he had wrapped the chain tightly a couple of times around my wrists behind my back, and now he took the left-over ends and pad-locked them together in front of me,” and everything will be oh, so peaceful.” By now, the entire class, including Mr Smith, were laughing almost out of control. “But wait,” Robert went on, “she can still come running after you; especially after school, when she doesn’t have to wear these skirts. To prevent that, you just get a chair, shove her into it, and use the rope.” While he talked he had put a chair behind me and now he pushed me into it. He took the rope and bent down, and lifted my skirts all the way up over my knees, before he continued talking.
“This,” he said holding up the rope,” you then start wrapping around her legs. This rope is so long, I can easily wrap it tightly all the way from her knees to her ankles, tying it off down there.” He did so, and stood up. “Now, you can unlock the left-over chain, lift her arms to the outside of the back-rest, and lock the ends back together again in front of her.
Then there’s only one thing left. Isn’t there?” He held up the final strip.”This comes in handy, when you want to prevent her from casting lethal looks at you, after you’ve more or less totally immobilized her in this way.” He tied the strip over my eyes. “And this is a very good use of a rope, a chain, a handkerchief and two strips of cloth. When they’re not used the way they’re supposed to.”

“A very good presentation indeed, of a subject that threatened to get a bit boring.” Mr. Smith said. I started making sounds to let them know, I was more than ready to be released, but everyone seemed to ignore me. Instead, I felt the chair I was tied to being lifted and put to one side. I was forced to sit there until lunchtime, when I was finally released.
