Revenge of the Gnomes

Saw something posted on Youtube recently that really puzzles the heck out of me.

Apparently Britains are mad because some TV ad shows angry garden gnomes. Never heard of defending garden gnomes before, but that isn't the part that puzzles me. I can't for the life of me figure out what the heck this odd commercial is trying to advertise - if anything. Could any of the British members here explain this to me?

I didn't see anything offensive about it either; I simply found it bewildering (though funny too, yes).

Bah, guess ill try to explain it the way i see it (and us, tv advertising is meant to not tell you want to do, but meant to make you question it, if you think about it then it will stick more. I think this is working here).

Ikea is selling a lot of stuff (like the garden set of table and chairs you see their, or the plants, water features) and this is making their be no room for the gnomes. Also this is a different style of items that do not fit in with the gnomes, so they start to get rid of the gnomes that have been their for years (and yet somehow look new...).

The gnomes a lot of people in England like, they name them (my family gnome was called Fred....) and they 'look over the garden' for you. So turning your back on them is bad and they try to take it back. Idea is making a point that you don't need to have a gnome any more and that what they sell is better (as in the way that it beats the gnomes).

Hope that helps.
Oh, a TUG! Do I have to play alone?
