Whatever it takes to ensure that any attack on me fails, but no more than is necessary to accomplish that. A lot depends upon how serious the threat of harm to me is and how powerful my foe(s) is/are compared to me. If threatened by being outnumbered or a weapon is pulled on me, I figure then that no self-restraint is necessary - in which case go after the biggest and most dangerous looking person first (before he even makes his move if possible).
One time in one of the few times I ever visited a bar when i was young some drunken idiot pulled a knife on me claiming I'd insulted his girlfriend or some such nonsense. As I'd not talked to any women let alone insulted them for quite some time this was either total BS or mistaken identity; and i didn't care which. Fortunately I was a big and fairly strong fellow back then, so I simply jumped up, grabbed the heavy chair I had been sitting in, and brought it down on his head. End of fight. Since he had no friends and I did (and had plenty of other witnesses too), I was never charged; clear case of self defense.
Been in several other fist fights too; all unprovoked by me. But it was fists against fists all those other times. Won all but the last one, and then only because I was sucker punched to begin with. Same SOB picked on another guy with a knife later on though, and that was the end of that loser.
Dare to be different... and make a difference.
To boldly go where no one in their right mind has gone before...
