Re: When it comes to University and College

Postby snobound » Mon Jun 27, 2011 1:05 pm

My parents paid by the course.... that is, they paif for the course if I earned the equivalent of an A- or better. I think there were only two courses that I wound up paying for, and they were serious incentive to get my ass in gear and do some studying. They never did try to influence my course choices.

Living near home so you can commute... and your folks can keep an eye on you?? Screw that! That is BS. You don't get the full college experience as a commuter. You don't establish the same friendships, connections, networks, etc. Too much like highschool, if you ask me.

Regardless.... consider yourself lucky that they're even willing/able to fund your education. That's becoming far less common these days.

Yes, everything Snowbound said. Those beds provide great opportunities for ...

They might have a case to say no to a particular U in case of rivalry but you should have complete decision on where to go, what to have as major and what courses to take. And, it is complete bs about them dictating your staying at home. You need to go away for what was said above but to experience life on you own, to meet new people and make new friends and to have new adventures. Going away is half the experience of college and should not be deprived.

I am now an old man but I must endorse what Snobound and Danny have written about being non-resident. There is more to going to college/university than just attending lectures and gainig formal qualifications.

I wish you luck and hope that you are not too much a victim of circumstances. In my day, and in England, the government paid to educate the people; without grants, poor kids such as myself stood no chance. . . . OK, Now I'm rambiing. That's off the point.

Good luck,

Government pays for me. My parents wouldn´t have paid me anything, I suppose...but then, in Austria it feels like you have to apologize for every year of studying instead of working. Different mentality, I suppose.

And I agree with the other people, you should go away, it´s an important step for your independance and adulthood. The best would be to live without their help, but that´s propably impossible. Nontheless, it´s your life and your education, you should decide it alone.

I paid for a third, parents paid a third and loans took care of a third. Grad school was mostly rents and part me.

Yes, that's a hell of a lot to make in three months, especially without a degree! It's tough to make that WITH a degree.... not that you want to hear that. This is why so many students graduate with crushing debt, causing a lot of people to question the point of getting a degree when all the jobs out there are crap within the service industry.

I'll tell ya.... after earning two bachelors degrees and a masters.... if I got to do it all over again, I would learn a trade instead, or get a CDL and drive a damn truck. Seriously!

1. yes, my parents pay for my education in college (degree program, so same tuition as uni) (i turned down university and i'm proud of it)

2. both my parents and i believe it is the STUDENT that has the say in what they take.

3. both my parents and i believe it is the student's decision on where to go...within reasonable distance of course (depends on families, but for us, within the province)

4. - i'll try to pay for my rent (rented room in house very close to campus), pay off car, and car insurance, when i get a paying co-op placement, but they mainly have it handled through education saving...they did their best to prevent my sis and i from relying on loans
- they pressure me to always reach for the highest (eg. degree vs diploma...please don't argue, i'm not up for that kind of talk), but i have the final say as to whether i want stay in the program, or switch to something else (eg. take up a trade)

personally, i love living away from the parental units...up to a point. during the school year i'd come back home about every other weekend to mooch off some food and catch up on tv...and get away from unruly room mates. now that it's summer and i'm in a complicated co-op position, i'm home every other week.
trust me, you WILL enjoy much more freedom when not having to listen to parents nagging at you or each other. everyone i know that lives away from home (sis, high school friends) change and for the most part, became more responsible people, since they have to take care of themselves. one of the people i know who still lives at home is still a rather naive, irresponsible person he's always been.
like others' have already mentioned, you will make a lot of friends, having more time to socialize and not going straight home after class.

In terms of paying, they only give me spending money. I have a full academic scholarship that pays for books, classes, tuition, and an apartment dorm.

If they paid, I can see they would rate schools based upon tuition payments, and that can be reasonable. However, in terms of education, it is my firm belief that parents have no right to dictate the futures of grown children (not unless they have behaved irresponsibly),
Home is 45 minutes away, but I don't go home too often. My advisors often have concerns for kids who travel home every weekend (and it happens alot). They are of the opinion that the college experience can never be fully embraced, and that kids who often graduate doing this stay at home after the education is over.

Most of my college education was paid for by my father's Social Security, because he died while I was still a minor and so I was collecting what was essentially posthumous child support (which I could collect up to age 22 if I went to college) even after my mother remarried. Much of the rest was paid for by scholarships. It helped though that I went to college over 30 years ago and so I paid no more than about $1000 per semester - and that included tuition, room and board, and books! Nowadays you pay almost as much for one semester as I did for all four years! It's insane!!!

My parents pay $40,000 a year for me to go to University of Maryland ... and I love every minute of it. I'm so glad I chose a school so far away from home because by not being able to go home for weekends, you bond (no bondage pun intended haha) with your fellow floormates and classmates a lot more and learn to become a much more independent individual as opposed to relying on your parents for things like laundry, food, etc. I'm very lucky that my parents are paying for everything (except my books, personal expenses, etc), but I think the expectation is that someday when I'm married and have a family of my own, I'll be able to treat them to vacations and such. :)

You're lucky it will only cost you 13 grand. Most is-state colleges where I live cost at least 16 to 17 G a year. Private schools in my state go up to like mid-40s.
