After writing the first part of this story I promised to continue it but then took a year off from the site. It has been a long time coming but I have finally written Chapter 2.
Part Two
Konnor put his watch into stop watch mode and counted down ‘Three…two…one…go!’
After two stumbling steps the girls synchronized and moved slowly but efficiently towards the chicken coop. Hens scattered with a cluck as the girls approached. After having been mirror images for so long working together like this was second nature to them.
When they reached the coop they solidly bumped into it with their shoulders to signal that they had arrived. The scared hens inside came clattering out of the door squawking loudly in a flurry of feathers.
‘Twenty seconds’ Konnor announced ‘we can beat that no problem!’
The boys untied the girls and handed them the ropes. Katie and Kassie, as they had now accepted as their new names (at least here at the farm), began to tie them up. After a wink and a smile to each other the girls, who were normally not shy too brag about their abilities, kept silent about the fact that in their short stint in the Girl Scouts they had mastered every knot in the Handbook. At a glance the boys appeared to be tied in an identical manner as the girls. The reality of a close inspection would show that wasn’t the case.
Each knot was tighter, every cinch had absolutely no slack and all of the connecting ties were a little shorter. The boys didn’t know it but their mobility was much more restricted than they realized. As it turned out these secretive measures were hardly necessary.
Kassie held the watch and counted down ‘Three...two…one…go!’
It was immediately obvious from the first awkward step that the two lads had grown up completely independent of each other. They had no concept of cooperation and in every movement they made they were in opposition. They went sideways more than forwards and lost a lot of time to course corrections.
Their time was so dismal that Kassie didn’t announce it to save them some embarrassment and they didn’t ask.
While untying the boys it was agreed that they would finish their chores, have supper and then get together in the barn where the girls could claim their reward.
The boys each blamed the other for their humiliating defeat and for the rest of the afternoon were rather curt with each other. The girls on the other hand were very pleased that they had turned their cousin’s deception around on them.
When Aunt Bonnie called them for supper they hurried to the house but before they could eat they had to clean up. The girl’s dresses were filthy, their shoes were scuffed and their tights went straight into the trash. Mom had them strip down in the washroom and she scrubbed them vigorously removing every trace of soil and other smelly substances. Then to their horror she ushered them out of the room into the hallway clad only in their bras and panties.
‘Go to your room and get some clothes on’ she commanded. They scampered down the hallway hoping that neither the boys nor Uncle Clyde would come along.
In their room they found that clever Mom had anticipated the fate of their inappropriate clothes. Spread out on the bed were blue jeans, plaid shirts, grey work socks and rubber boots. The girls were dismayed at Mom’s fashion choices but had to concede the practicality of the apparel under these circumstances. They dressed without a fuss except for one issue.
Mom had purchased one red plaid shirt and one blue plaid shirt. The girls had no problem figuring out that the color choices were for the benefit of Aunt Bonnie and Uncle Clyde who couldn’t tell them apart. Each wanted the red but then they agreed that they would switch shirts as often as possible to keep everyone guessing.
After a round of rock/paper/scissors Katie went to supper in red and Kassie followed in blue.
Supper was followed by a variety of home baked desserts and milk from their own cows. Everyone pitched in to clean up. The girls groaned at the “primitive” lack of a dishwasher and had their first exposure to manually drying dishes.
Then the kids excused themselves to leave the adults chatting over coffee and tea while they went to the barn for the result of their three-legged race.
The boys seemed to be nervous. It was obvious from their performance earlier that the girls were very capable with ropes. Kurtis and Konnor had some experience at playing “escape games” and always managed to get free but they were having some doubts about their chances this time. Little did they know that it was going to be much worse than they imagined.
Unknown to the boys the girls had a brief discussion about the desired outcome of the penalty they were about to inflict on their cousins. They agreed that since the boys had taken them as suckers when they proposed the race there would have to be an element of humiliation to their punishment to exact a little revenge.
Kassie took charge of Kurtis while Katie had other plans for Konnor.
Kassie led Kurtis over to one of the heavy wooden posts that supported the roof of the barn. She had him sit with his back against it. She pulled his arms behind him around the post and tied his wrists. There was nothing more to it, that’s all she needed to accomplish her plan.
As Kassie walked away saying ‘I’ll be back in a minute’ he thought that this was rather disappointing. He had expected a much more complex tie up from such an intelligent girl and actually he had been looking forward to it.
When she returned she was holding one hand up high and half a dozen calves were following her.
‘This afternoon you explained to us that each calf finds its own mother by her unique smell’ said Kassie ‘I wonder what happens if someone smells like all of the mothers.’
‘I rubbed my hand on all of the mom’s udders’ explained Kassie as she ran her hand over Kurtis’ face and neck ‘let’s see what they do.’
As she stepped away the calves surrounded Kurtis and began to lick him. Their rough tongues chafed his skin and they became more aggressive as their efforts failed to produce any milk. Kurtis twisted and turned but there was little he could do to get away from them. Meanwhile Konnor was having his own problems.
Katie had taken him out to the split rail fence that kept the cows out of the chicken yard. She had him put his back to the fence and then put his arms out to the sides along the top rail. She tied him at his wrists and elbows. Then she put his legs through the fence resting his knees on the lower rail and tying them there.
She climbed over the fence and pulled off his rubber boots and socks. Cupping some water from the trough in her hand she wet his feet and then tossed some chicken feed on them. The wet feed stuck to his feet and soon the hens were pecking away at them.
The girls stood together at the back door of the barn, a vantage point from which they could see both boys, and they had a good laugh at their country cousins.
