PROLOGUE
FIRST CASUALTY

The first time I ever got tied up was with a jump rope, to a chair, during a game and by a ten-year-old.

Granted, at the time, I was also ten, but that didn't reconcile being tied up by a ten-year-old - and a boy, on top of that!  Getting tied up by a boy of equal age for us girls (at the time) was the equivalent of getting tied up by a crippled two-year-old girl.  Then again, getting tied up by a ten-year-old girl to a ten-year-old boy, as it happened often in the game, couldn't have been pleasant.

When the game of Capture (we were ten when we named it, jerks) had started out, it was much simpler.  Anyone would tag anyone, say "Capture," then lock that person in an empty classroom for five minutes (the fourth grade equivalent of fifty long years in a maximum security prison).

Then, over the weeks which became months which became years, it got slowly more and more complicated and fun.  First was the rule that a tag wasn't enough, you had to be physically captured.  Then- to keep from fiddling with the lock- their hands would be tied.  Then- well, they could just run away!- their feet would be tied, too.  Then they could be tied any way- why not?  Besides, it's fun!  Then they could be gagged- so they can't scream for help of coarse!- and blindfolded- so they can't plot against their attackers.  Then they had to be left for hours instead of minutes- or just left to get themselves untied.  Because a few minutes wasn't long enough to struggle and be overjoyed with their helplessness.

Then the teams developed.

At first, it was just a few people here and there banding together, always ending in one betraying the other.  Then the idea of actual groups- pre-set before the game- began developing in our minds.  It would be so much fun- with the occasional betrayal here and there to keep things interesting.  It was also wonderful news for me, who had been terrible at the game and could now join up with some actually talented other players to form an unstoppable team.

There were becoming so many rules by that time that a long list (notebook papers scotch-taped together so as not to waste the duct tape) was tacked up to the wall in the main entrance to our playing grounds.

Our playing ground was an abandoned school- modern and nice, with multiple floors.  There were many classrooms and each had windows practically lining the far wall, a chalkboard, a whiteboard, a teacher's desk, and four rows of nine student desks with chairs.  There was never another soul there, and it was located close enough to our houses that no one ever questioned it being too far away.  The doors were sliding doors and locked from both the inside and outside, though they now were only left locked if the captors fully intended to come back after a few hours and let their prey free.

Every summer, weekend, holiday, snow day or break we would get during the year was spent here- more and more joining us of many ages and families.  Since we all lived in a private reserve with less that five "parental" figures (girls and guys in their early twenties or really late teens who ignored our game at worst and joined in at best), giant mansions, nearly unlimited resources and tons of time on our hands, the game went on day after day.

And now it was summer again.

But I digress.  What I came here to tell you about is the very first time I- or anyone else in the game- was tied up instead of just locked in a room.

It was August 17, and I was ten years old and still a fresh player in the game.  By now, there were yet to be teams, the requirement of tied hands or a list of rules, but we did have to be physically captured.

So that was why my head was pounding like a stampede was let loose in it.

I had gotten tackled by two boys at once- Jeremy and Will- and they had dragged me away kicking and screaming, dark chocolate colored hair in a frenzy of locks.

Okay... Maybe I was still too dazed to really fight back.  But I still was back to myself by the time I was in classroom 212 on the second floor (duh) and the twelfth room (double duh).  I started to wave my arms, but they each grabbed one and pushed them solidly against the armrests of the chair.

"Twerps!"  I called out, angry that they'd had the audacity (although, as a ten-year-old girl who didn't read much, I'm fairly sure the word I used in my head was "jerkiness") to tackle me at the same time.  I still thrashed against their holds, and they seemed to realize that I would be out the door if they let go to go lock me in.

"Hey, Jere, what're we gonna do 'bout her?" Will wanted to know as I struggled and hissed.

Jeremy seemed to think for a moment, then replied with an evil grin, "Just keep holding her down, Will.  I'll be right back."  He stood, turned, and left the room.

For a moment, there was silence, then I turned to Will and asked nonchalantly, "So, how 'bout this weather we're having?"

Before he could answer, Jeremy came skipping back into the room with a few jump-ropes, grinning ear to ear.  In my childhood innocence (says the ten year old who watched PG-13 movies), I had no idea what he planned to do with it, so I was calm as could be.

It's when he jerked my hands against the armrests and knotted them there with one rope that I began to panic.  My eyes widened and I started to thrash harder- too late.  My wrists were secured to the arm rests of the chair with one jumping rope.  As I watched, admittedly terrified- I MEAN totally nonchalant- he knelt down and grabbed my legs, doing the same and knotting them against the legs of the chair.

When he stood up, I was struggling and hissing things no ten-year-old should hiss- at least, in ten-year-old eyes- but to no avail.  He was already pinioning my arms and torso to the chair with a third jump rope, tightening it enough that I was pulled into the hardness of the chair.

"What the hell are you doing!"  I dropped the h-e-double hockysticks word, which was, at the time, worse that the f-bomb is now.

"There we go," Jeremy sounded satisfied as he dusted his hands off on each other in glancing half-claps.  "That should keep her in place while we lock the door. "

Will, now regaining his composure and appearing unfazed, was not so unfazed by my word choice.  "Uh, uh, none of that, Alyssa," he said calmly, stepping towards the teacher's closet in the corner.  He opened the door and pulled out a stress ball and a roll of duct tape, returning as my eyes widened.

Instinct shot in and man, did I detest the idea of being gagged.  My mouth snapped open to make him reconsider, but he quickly took advantage of that and shoved the stress ball into my mouth.  It was not meant to be in mouths and was so big that I almost couldn't spit it out.  Before I could push it out of my mouth entirely, however, duct tape was wrapped around my mouth and head several times.

My light hazel eyes shot lasers as I wriggled, telling a thousand tales of how I'd kill them.  As they watched, I thrashed and screamed into my gag, but made no progress except for progress in humiliating myself.

Tied to chair by ten-year-old boy?  Check.

Tied up in general?  Check.

Locked in room?  Check.

Being laughed at?  Check.

Screaming incoherently into gag?  Check.

Thrashing uselessly?  Check.

Being told not to go anywhere?  Well, not yet, so at least I had a leg to stand on.

Being discovered like this?  Two legs, then.

Finally controlling their giggles, they managed to get up and plod over to the door, sliding it open.  Will raced down the hall to go attack someone else, and Jeremy stayed to lock the door.

Just as he began to close it, Jeremy looked in the room with a huge grin.

"Don't go anywhere."

Check.

The door closed and locked.

I was lucky that they'd never tied anyone up before so I could get out of their ties.  Then, still fuming, I climbed out the window, fell to the first floor, and walked home.
