Part 3 -
Sighing at her friend's superficial ways, Kate walked over to the table where Nigel was sitting, waiting quietly.
She pulled out a chair next to him and smiled. "Hi, Nigel. I guess we're partnering up for this thing, huh?"
Nigel blushed a little and tried to smile nervously. "I guess we are. Y-you're Kate, right?"
Kate smiled, trying to help her partner feel at ease. "That's me."
She scooted her chair a little closer and gave her partner a look-over.
He wasn't bad-looking.
He had brown hair in a fringe that covered his eyes, and a shy smile that was adorable.
Maybe, Kate thought, Ashley might think he was cute if she looked past her base stereotypes.
Kate sighed in frustration.
She loved her friend, but boy did she annoy her sometimes!
Nigel picked up on this quickly.
"W-what's wrong?" he stammered.
Kate blushed. "Oh, nothing. Just...Ashley being annoying."
"You're best f-friends, aren't you?" he asked.
Kate smiled. "Yeah, since we were tiny. Why?"
A dreamy look came over Nigel's face, and the penny dropped.
"I think I love her," Nigel said dreamily, without stammering for once.
"Jeez," thought Kate.
Truth be told, she felt a little sad for Nigel.
To love someone and have them hate you in return...she winced at the very thought.
It made her angry at Ashley.
Rather than telling the exact truth, Kate decided to spare Nigel's feelings.
"That may be a problem," she said. "Since she has her eye on Don."
Nigel's face contorted in anger. "He's a jerk! He has it in for me."
Kate raised an eyebrow, unsurprised.
Then, after a moment's hesitation, she put her hand on Nigel's .
"It's ok," she said with a smile. "We'll have a great time together as husband and wife, and you'll forget all about those two."
Nigel gave her a smile that warmed her heart.
"Sounds g-g-good, Kate."
