What was I thinking?

When I was about 16, I would do a lot of hiking in a nearby woods. I had a friend who would go with me sometimes.

One chilly winter night we went for one of our night hikes. I had a pair of handcuffs with me. At one point I decided it could be exciting to be handcuffed to a tree. I showed Larry the handcuffs and asked him if he would do it to me. I put my arms around a tree with a diameter of about 8 inches and he handcuffed me. I asked him to leave me there for a little while and he left. No, don't ask me what I was thinking!

I stood there for a while. I do not know how to pick locks and, while not tight, I was not able to get my hands loose.

I was there for a long time, perhaps 45 minutes, before Larry came back. He seemed genuinely surprised I was still there. Larry knew a few magic tricks and he said he didn't think I would let him do that unless it was a trick. He said he expected I would be gone and he wasn't going to come back.

He unlocked the handcuffs and I was free and, no, I don't know what I would have done.
