Scott hit the nail on the head! I once had occasion to enter a psychiatrist's waiting room on a business matter, not for analysis. His receptionist was not at her desk, so I seated myself. A young couple sat opposite me in adjacent chairs, his arm around her shoulder, holding her close. She was wringing her hands. They seemed nervous, anxious. Shortly the good doctor appeared at his open office door and bade them come in, and closed the door after they entered.
After what I guess was fifteen minutes or so I heard a roar of laughter from the good headshrink. Then I hear more laughter, which I thought was from the couple. This repeated a few times. The inner door opened and I heard the couple expressing thanks and appreciation and the doctor advising them, you are perfectly normal--nothing to worry about ...very common.. have fun but as I said, be careful with each other. The Dr. never mentioned the visit, and of course I would not ask. But I always thought the couple was engaged in some personal activity which caused them to doubt their sanity but which the doctor had heard before.
