Merry Christmas, unless you are offended by such a greeting. Then, please take your politically correct ass somewhere far away, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

As a Pagan, I object to the meaningless "Happy Holidays" type greeting.
About ten years ago at work a normally feisty friend and colleague plucked up the courage to breach the question of whether she should send me and the other half a Christmas card or whether that would offend us. Unlike others, she was a practicing (rather than a nominal) Christian.
I tried to persuade her that the reaction "How dare you send me your good wishes at this time of year?" would not be so much most unreasonable but actually extremely stupid. Her Christmas card was of a religious nature; so was mine, just different religions.
Blessed be to all of good will,
Have a good yule.

Being offended by the term Christmas is just silly. Its arguably the least religious religious holiday out there considering the big icon is just as much a happy fat man as it is Jesus Christ. If you don't believe in the later then just do in the former, problem solved.

Happy Holidays is pretty convincing though because it holi-DAYS If you see someone just before Christmas and are pretty sure you don't see them before new year its a good way to talk about both holidays.

Are we seriously going to fight over a name, it's supposed to be called Christmas but because of religious reasons, even religious people call it Christmas, I don't understand, but I can't change it so I'm asking admin to please change the name if you can to Xmas or what ever feels more confortable for everybody, honestly....

Quite right.

As for "Xmas", it has a venerable Christian pedigree. The "X" is a rendering of the "Chi" character in the "Chi-Rho" symbol, (the one that looks like a P crossing through an "X") an ancient rendering of the first two characters in the word "Christos". Guess what that means.

People who are offended by Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays just need to get a life. What a dopey thing to get offended over. I blame self-righteous right-wingers like Bill O'Reilly for stirring up the nut-jobs over this.
As for me, a greeting is a greeting and I take it in the spirit with which it was meant... the words are not the important bit.

No one is "offended" by it, and the idea that anyone would be is an invention of the same overgrown children who whine and cry whenever christians aren't groveled and catered to every second of every day. The irony of choosing a holiday largely stolen from pagans (and a holiday whose traditions are virtually all modern anyway) to cry their little eyes out over is just the frosting on top.

Yeah, I had to laugh when Christians made a big stink over how Starbucks didn't design their cups to their liking.Don't they realize that virtually all the symbols they squawk about the absence of aren't actually of Christian origin at all but co-opted from pagan celebrations? For that matter, Christmas and Easter are just as pagan in origin as Halloween more obviously is. If we held to strictly Christian/biblical references to Christmas, the holiday wouldn't even exist in any form we recognize!

Prior to the early/mid 1800s or so, it wasn't really recognizable to 20th or 21st century people. Adding to the irony, the folks making the most noise about Christmas being UNDER ATTACK (tm) tend to be the same ones that glorify the founding fathers....the same founding fathers who shunned Christmas, considering it a British tradition. They tend to be the same ones that glorify commerce...when merchants are the ones who started using "Happy Holidays" to try and appeal to any customer with money burning a hole in their pocket in the first place.

Yup. In fact much of what we we consider ancient tradition was actually popularized by Charles Dickens in The Christmas Carol. Most were not widespread prior to this story, but his story made them so popular they became traditional at that time.

I believe one of the Brothers Grimm had quite a bit to do with forming some of the Yule observances. He was, of course, a folklorist from what is now Germany.
I can't help noticing the very close parallel between Father Christmas and Odin/Woden.
The clothing of "Santa Claus" of bum-freezer and cap is, of course, pure Americana (?Coca-Cola?).

The verbal image of Santa Claus was created by Clement, in his poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas." (T'was the night before Christmas) The visual image was popularized by, as XTC correctly noted, the Coca Cola Company.

I have everyone beat! Happy Life Day! (For those who don't know about the Star Wars Holiday Special, it's the Wookiee equivalent of Christmas)

Seriously though, I say Merry Christmas even though I follow no religion because to me, Christmas is about the ONE day out of the 365 that we put aside our differences, unite as a species and for one day be nice and thoughtful to each other.
