FIFA...

Postby NemesisPrime » Thu Jun 12, 2014 8:04 pm

I normally do not talk about matters of the sporting world but FIFA disgusts me in every possible way.

With the fact that the World Cup is taking place in Brazil and the government spent $10 Billion on a new stadium that will only be used ONCE with money they didn't have it won't be seeing a penny of the proceeds further dooming it's citizens to squalor and poverty while the major corporations like Budweiser get even richer.

Here's John Oliver's summary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlJEt2KU33I

What are your thoughts on the matter?

Brazilian government and yes.

More so for the fact that it won't see a penny of that money making it's citizens even poorer than they already were and putting their country even further in debt.

That and FIFA makes countries that host the Wold Cup change it's laws to allow their sponsors to get even richer and it's all tax-decutable! Can't be taxed!

So yes, I'm rip-roaring pissed.

I don't agree but i can at least see the logic of Brazil wanting to host the cup despite its economy.

Brazil is one of the big countries in Football and as one of the emerging powers projects of prestige are to be expected. I think their government gambled that their football passionate people would rejoice rather then notice the money could have been spend way better. They gambled wrong.

Remind me: are the Brazilian authorities still sitting homeless youngsters on the parrot perch or have they settled for machine gunning them in the sewers? Perhaps we've forgotten those practices.

First of all, just cause I do not like football (soccer) does not make me any less of a man. I'd even go so far as to say there's no such thing as a "real man".

Second of all, FIFA is FAR more corrupt. Who the hell has $1 Billion in a reserve as a "non-profit"? Why does FIFA get all the money and the host country sees none of that?

Third of all, why Qatar for the 2022 games? Maybe because it's a slave-state or the fact it's on average 144 degrees?

Royle wrote:Also, fifa doesn't make anyone do anything. Forcing countries to change laws? You've been reading too
Many stories.

Really? Ask the World Cup COURT or the fact in 2010 it was illegal to sell beer at sporting events in Brazil but has now been changed cause one of FIFA's sponsors is Budwiser which is a BEER company? I don't think you've been reading enough.

I'm not saying you're blind but at most ignorant and at least misguided but if you can link me articles where FIFA has done actual tangible good (improve local economies or made the citizens of the country better off) I'll withdraw. Fair?

Please don't make abusive remarks. Not only are they unwelcome, they undermine any legitimate point you might be making.

What in the world did they put in this stadium for it to cost $10 billion? Even the fanciest NFL stadiums here in the US don't come anywhere close to costing that much. I've been in Cowboys Stadium in Texas which cost a little over $1 billion and it's hard to imagine stadiums getting much gaudier than that one.

I don't know the ins and outs of business models as that's not anywhere near my area of expertise, but I'm certain that all major companies have corruption somewhere along the lines. Just like Qatar and the bribing of corrupt officials. Fifa is not a corrupt organisation, it is a victim of corruption and that is pretty unavoidable.

Why should Brazil see any of the money? They bid to host the games and they won. They didn't bid for a handout to afford the hosting. They have the ability to generate a hell of a lot of revenue from the tournament, if the government chooses to not use it wisely, don't blame fifa.

I'm all for Sepp Blatter to stand down/lose his next attempt at standing, as he's probably one of the most corrupt individuals associated with fifa, but

Actually I can't be bothered with this argument anymore. Wether I win it lose it's not going to affect the day I have so it's pretty much counter productive. I respect that at the end of your last post you have me an option to attempt to prove otherwise to you and I respect you for that. So I apologise for resorting to insults. As a business Fifa are ruthless. But so what, so is everyone else and that's not gonna change. It's something we have to live with. But al lot of employees of fifa, probably 51%+ aren't corrupt and love and want to improve the game. That's what fifa is about and they're the real representatives in my eyes.

Now that's what I look for. Actual tangible good but I do disagree that we can't try to minimize said corruption and I won't live with it. It's attitudes like that that ensure nothing is done.

I look at things purely from a business stance but I'm not so blind that you can't be purely good or purely evil. FIFA is corrupt of at least it's head CEO is. If that old man takes a tumble again I can't say I will feel sorry for him.

But yes, let us take the high road and be friends savvy? I want to get along with everyone on this forum.

Look at the las and futere hosts- South Africa (2010), Brazil (2014), Russia (2018), Qatar (2018)
FIFA choses countries that are not democratic or not developed. FIFA does it to control the governments of the host countries
,Last fully democrat and developed country to host the WC was Germany (2006), by all prediction the 2026 wc will be in India, Mexico or China. ( Canada wants to host but its to democrat to FIFA)

BUT is still love football (or soccer if you like) and I stil love the FIFA World Cup!

Wrong. Once Qatar loses the 2022 World Cup, the US in next in line

Qatar will not lose the 2022 World cup.
By any logic the US should have won but it didn't. Olso for the 2018 WC there were better bids than Russia (like England) but you know, FIFA.
