So I'd like to ask if anyone here is exited for the game. Perhaps the better question would be if you're STILL exited about it. Because recently two things got revealed that put a damper on all the hype. Firstly is the unsurprising news that they would ditch the turn based combat for a more action oriented one. The second controversial news was that the remake of FF 7 would be an episodic one...and Squire Enix does not have the reputation to make that news come without fear of abuse.
As for me. I'm reasonably exited for the game though I have my reservations as well. I can totally see why 7 would be the game to remake but truthfully its not the Final Fantasy I would go for. FF7 is neither ff6 nor 9 and Cloud certainly isn't Zidane or Terra. But that's a question of taste I suppose. The news still came very welcome to me because now I can wipe away the massive gaming faux pass of never having payed Final Fantasy 7. Unlike more recent ones you also can't really go wrong with any pre XIII final fantasy.
The news about turn based combat doesn't sit to badly to me in practice. Like I said, I never played the original so there's no familiar combat system to ruin for me and combat looked cool in both the trailers of this game and the newest one.
That being said it doesn't sit well with me on a philosophical level. Final Fantasy 7 not having turn based combat is the definitive confirmation of the end of an era in gaming. The old guard of Final Fantasy games are the posterchild of the traditional rpg and 7 is the very game which made the genre mainstream. That very game in particular abandoning turn based combat gives a message and that message is that turn based combat no longer has a place in modern gaming. And I'm finding that a very bad message.
The game being episodic is more damming news. Squire's reputation isn't filling me with a lot of confidence and if the game is contained in episode that the world map and further exploration will be very hard to pull off.
