I like a lot of things I've read about Cain, in that he's been successful in pretty much everything he's done and seems to have both common sense and book smarts (a rare combination, and both very useful for politicians), but there are some very, very serious concerns about him as president. You already mentioned his lack of political experience. That was a sticking point with me about Obama as well, as I thought he'd be in over his head, and I was right. Cain has even less experience (he has none, actually).

The other is his now (in)famous 9-9-9 plan, and especially that last 9, the national sales tax. There is no way the states will give up their own sales taxes, so you could be looking at sales taxes on normal goods of around 16-18% depending on where you live. I don't know about anybody else but I'm really not looking forward to paying for that. If you buy very much stuff that could add up rather quickly. This is also one of those things the government is probably never going to give up once it's in place, so if it goes bad we'll still be stuck with it, and it can only go up. The lower income taxes help but I think the sales tax could very easily make up for it. Lower-income people are going to be hurt by it the most.

On the other hand, I have serious doubts Cain could actually get something like that through Congress in the first place, but the problem is it's pretty much his singular major focus. We've already been through a similar situation with Obama and his health care debacle and a focus on that and pretty much nothing else, which did nothing to help the country out and let other things fall apart while people bitched and fought about that. I'm afraid that's what the 9-9-9 would lead to, even if it doesn't get passed.

Can Cain be president? I have no idea. He's accomplished quite a lot in his life. If he was half as successful as president as he is as a businessman he'd still be the most successful president we've had in quite a while. But the presidency is a much different beast. I'm not sure I'm willing to take that chance. If it comes down to Cain or Romney though, I'm definitely giving him a serious look.
