I think the reaction of most reasonable people here will be as you probably expect.
Having been an editor myself for local magazines at one time (and originally trained to be a middle-school level teacher), I definitely would call this unprofessional and racist. You don't accuse someone of plagiarism without definitive proof or at least reasonable evidence, such as a noticeable change in writing habits or knowing you've seen the article before. Especially these days, when it's often fairly easy to catch a plagiarist with a simple Google search! This sounds pretty similar to those cases of black female doctors trying to help an ill passenger on a plane they were on and the flight crew not letting them try because of outward appearances.

Okay, I keep seeing this everywhere. I don't get it. What's so different about the word 'hence'? I thought it meant 'therefore'.

It does. But you rarely hear the word 'hence' in conversation or see it in documents despite its simplicity. At least, *I* rarely do. Even so, i quite agree that it's a pretty spurious reason to accuse someone of plagiarism. And it's not *that* rare a word. I knew it as a child, for crying out loud. It's not like she was using some fancy obscure word such as hebetude (which my spell-check doesn't even recognize as a valid word), mendacity, perspicacious, or phlegmatic... all words describing personality traits (meaning dullness of mind, stubbornness, being quick on the uptake, and apathetic; in that order).

I kinda use hence. Well, I'm not aware of it but...

And how is this racist?!?!

Well, the professor's assumption that a non-white student couldn't write an original paper using words like 'hence' probably has a lot to do with it.

But how would you know he wouldn't do the same thing with a white student (i.e. how would you know he wouldn't think it wasn't plagiarised if the student was white)?

It's true that I don't know; not for a fact anyway.
But I'm willing to bet he'd have been less harsh with a white student than he was with this one.

No, not everything. In fact, you just saying that is sort of racist in itself.
I've been to Germany. it's been over thirty years now, but i lived there for nearly two years and i can tell you that most of the people i met there were friendlier and nicer than most people I've known in my own country (USA). Of course, this was before East and West Germany reunited in the 1990s, and i lived in West Germany. I understand much of the current neo-nazism and other racism mostly comes from the former East Germany, which was dominated by Soviet propaganda for over two generations. Even so, they're not quite as bad as other parts of Europe seem to be these days.

No, you don't, no. You understand nothing, Mr. White Guilt. Which is expected of someone who resides in United States of No_Ethnic_Identity.

Quoting me out of context doesn't make your case. Neither do blanket racist statements.
You're close to crossing a line with me. I'd advise you to back off.

We live in a time where if you do something wrong to someone who isn't white, you're racist, and that's pretty much all there is to the discussion.

A bit of an over-simplification, don't you think?

I really have no idea what he meant, but it definitely sounded derogatory to me.
I'm afraid you'll have to ask him... once his suspension is over anyway. But I'll bet he doesn't know what he's talking about ether.
