The point of prision is to house them so they wont be out in society. The fact that you are stuck in a building 23 hours a day (1 hour to go out side) and have limited options of what to do every day is the point.
You:
Get to drive anywhere you want
Get to buy what you want
Get to talk to who you want
Get to eat what you want
Get to do anything.
They:
1 hour of yard time
Limited visitation
The price for things like snacks, comes out of a canteen fund which is jacked up in price
Only get to talk to other prisoners
So the fact they get food that is half way decent, and get to watch tv or listen to music... it still has far less rights then a free person. And in jail those are privileges, that can be revoked.
You also mention labor work, they do jobs in jail. As well as schooling so when they are sent back into the real world they have a degree and some form of job experience.
I close my eyes, Inis Mona
And reminisce of those palmy days
I moon o'er you, Inis Mona
As long as I breathe
I'll call you my home
