Catfishers on forum

As you have all probably seen by now, there's been some recent accusations of catfishing among some users on this forum. The most recent of which I am unsure of, but there seems to be a recurring theme of users being exposed for posting false experiences or otherwise masquerading as someone else entirely. My question is simply, what is the point? What's the thrill in lying to everyone and maintaining a false persona?

Sure, I can understand exaggerating your TUG experiences a bit for the sake of a decent story, but why do some go through all the trouble of creating and maintaining a fake profile? At first I thought maybe there's some kick in having people message you, or comment on your photos with, "OH MY GAWD YOU'RE SO HAWT. HAVE MY BABIES." You know, some strange pursuit of what you wish your life was? But what good does that do you? You know what you post is not true. Just because you write false stories in the "True" section and describe yourself as a 6ft tall attractive man or a skinny beautiful woman doesn't change your reality. So why bother?

Or, is it perhaps something far more sinister? Could these people be masquerading as 20-something year old men and women in an attempt to lure unsuspecting users into meet ups? You know, the whole stranger danger bit that they drilled into our heads in elementary school? Minus the mutual interest in bondage of course. I'd like to believe that this community is better than that, but aside from personal or financial gain I don't see why people catfish on forums like this. The again, maybe I'm just missing something here.

Oh bugger! Looks like my pose as a miserable, fat old bloke has been exposed.

I think its mostly harmless.

Anonymity gives people a degree of safety and with your faces never being revealed the chances of being found out are much lower. I think its as you said, people going around as who they want to be but perhaps also to get some of the attention they might want.

Welcome to the Internet, sadly.

They want attention, but who really cares?

If you're not going to meet up IRL it doesn't really matter now, does it? If you are worried about only talking to dudes when you think they are hot girls, try and go outside to a real rope workshop instead. (:

If you only want to jack off online then convince yourself everyone's a hot girl and you'll do just fine.

I'm not quite as old as xtc but otherwise that could describe me as well. There would be no point in portraying myself as a hot young stud when I'm anything but. I did have a more active TUG life when i was growing up than most people here seem to have had, but it wasn't due to any charm or other good qualities on my part but pure dumb luck - emphasis on the dumb. I let myself get into situations no really sane person should have, but it all worked out even though I pretty much blundered my way through it all.
