Liking a topic

Postby thewrath248 » Mon Apr 02, 2012 3:07 am

I would like to make a suggestion to this board for an ability to "like" topics. Instead of going by account, you you can allow guests can only "like" a topic once. It would give guests who do not wish to make an account a small and minimal voice that could greatly affect us writers portray our stories. Please give it consideration. I'd like to hear back from anyone about any opinions or ideas about adding a "like" system. Thank you. -thewrath248

I can agree with Fesselfan on this one, but still, you've got quite a good point.

I'm not saying facebook is right... The status stuff is annoying... But youtube did get it right. Liking something could be a good idea and would tell the writers on the forum that they are doing a good job. A lot of the traffic on this website is from Guests reading stories.

But this wouldn't involve Facebook, right? This would simply be using one of their ideas. That might be okay.
I wouldn't want a direct connection to Facebook however. In fact I want nothing to do with it at all.

Yeah, but do any of our mods know enough HTML to do such a thing? I believe they use a forum service, not a home made website. If they did then I commend them, it's not any easy task.

If this actually does happen make sure that it isn't called a "like"

What type of code? And, I do not want ANYTHING to do with facebook as well. Just giving a story a thumbs up for good writing or a thumbs down for needs work can be very helpful though. Back to zanev. If you know what type of code you use, I'm sure if not me, someone on this forum knows computer sciences. If you want to try on your own, I'm sure there is some scripting online that you could figure out how to incorporate into the already written scripting the website uses. :)

It’s odd that I missed this thread until now, because this is an issue that concerns me.
I am not in favour of a “like” function. I don’t see a need for it and I don’t like the idea of story-writing turning into any sort of competition. In fact, I feel strongly enough that I would probably quit writing if it was introduced.

Sarah really has another very good point here!
Thinking about my stories...it took me hours and hours to write them, spell check them, formating them etc.
I am sure most other authors here are not quicker...
So is it sooo much to much to hit the "reply" button and type a nice word or two if you like a story? If yes, well then I agree with Sarah...not my world (or audience) anymore.

Sarobah and others make a good point. I submitted drawings at DA for a while, and though I would get a lot of 'favorites', I always much preferred a few words of feedback to a fave any day; especially since many faves were from people who simply faved anything that met certain parameters - resulting in their having literally tens of thousands of favorites. Some such people would fave me time and again yet never write one word of personal comment as feedback. Being 'faved' by such people was to me a completely empty honor indeed. I much prefer a little personal feedback - even one that's not entirely positive, as long as it's not entirely negative to the poit of being insulting - to a dozen impersonal faves such as that.

Up to the present point I haven't yet posted any stories here, but if my 'two pence' is worthy of being considered in spite of that fact, then I'd just like to add that I agree with the statement of sarobah and other's that concurred.

I definitely do see possible merits to a 'thumbs up' system yes, but when it comes to stories and so on, as a writer (although extremely amateur) of some poetry and the odd story, I can safely say that an empty 'thumbs up' would be meaningless to me, and possibly even less than meaningless. People sometimes have a tendency to 'take the easy route' too, so where you might have someone who would otherwise comment, if you give them the option, that would just turn into a 'thumbs up' and no comment, so even what you'd have already could be lost in swathes.

In short, I see it's merits, but it's down sides are just too great, and therefore, if this matter ever came to a vote, I would most absolutely vote against the idea and discourage anything that would encourage a possible lessening of personal comments.

>>> . . . I always much preferred a few words of feedback to a fave any day . . . <<<

Agreed. Not only with drawings, but with stories, as well. If little or no feedback is given, the writer will think not enough people care, and that it isn't worth his time and effort to produce stories for the entertainment, amusement, and enjoyment of the other members.

Of course, one must understand that writers, particularly professional writers, have egos bigger than the Grand Canyon. The mindset of professionals, and a lot of amateurs, is "My stuff is great, everybody else is a no-talent hack, and my editor is Joe, the butcher, who edits with a meat cleaver."

(The post wherein the writer contradicts her previous posts.)

Looking back over my own contributions to the TUGs forum, I realize that I am not a prolific commenter on other people’s stories. It isn’t that I don’t have the time or couldn’t be bothered, rather that I cannot think of anything to say that hasn’t been said by another commenter. (I worry about these things.)
So I shall invite scorn and derision by changing my vote, in favour of a “like” function... IF AND ONLY IF it doesn’t turn into a competition.
