Strange but true: Star Trek: TNG ran from the late 80's to the mid 90's. During the run, the series bridged seasons with a two part episode with the Federation engaging the Borg at "Wolf 359." Perhaps the writers were paying tribute to a show from 30 years in the past, as "Wolf 359" was an episode title of the anthology SciFi series "The Outer Limits," which ran on network TV in the early 60's.

I guess Wolf 359 has appeal to science fiction writers because it’s the third nearest star (fourth if you count the Sun).
However, it’s a pretty wimpy star. I never figured out why the Federation and the Borg would fight a battle there (Star Trek) or why it would be chosen for an exobiology experiment (Outer Limits). Maybe because it has a “cool” name.
