A lesson learned

Here is why I became immobilized for the best part of 24 hours:

I was in 8th grade and I was assigned to our local hospital for one week, getting some work-experience during the autumn. As the work was mostly too heavy for me, I had a lot of time on my hands. One day, the head-nurse caught me sitting in one of the wheelchairs on the ward, trying to strap myself in. “Do you need a hand with that, young lady?” she asked in a stern voice. I got out of the chair so quickly, I almost tipped it over. “No, miss.” I said, in a frightened little voice; for she was a no-nonsense kind of a nurse and you didn’t dare call her anything but “miss”.
“I see we have a Curious George, or should I say Curious Georgina on our hands! Look, it’s getting late and it’s time for you to be getting home. But first thing tomorrow, I want to see you in my office. Is that understood?”
“Yes, miss.” I said staring intensely at the linoleum floor-tiles at my feet.

As soon as I arrived the next morning, I went to her office. In there stood a wheelchair, seemingly almost completely covered in straps.
“Sit down” she commanded. “No not there, in the wheelchair, of course. You silly girl!” she said when she saw me heading for the chair beside her desk. I sat down in the wheelchair as instructed, and she started tightening the all straps, from the arms down. From the top down, there were straps:
 Around my chest
 Around my wrists and the armrests
 Over my hips
 Between my legs, connecting to the strap around my waist
 Around each of my knees and ankles and to the frame on each side
When she was done, I was completely immobilized, except for my head.
“You will spend the day with me today and I will take care of you. There is only one thing that will get you out of that chair, and that is a visit to the bathroom. I will let you go there a couple of times. Otherwise you will be strapped down at all times, including mealtimes. I was talking to your parents as you arrived, and they’ve agreed to let you spend the night here.”
That day, I learned a valuable lesson: The lesson of having to depend on another persons’ kindness for getting just about anything done in my day to day life. I spent the night strapped from the chest downwards, in a bed at the hospital, once again not being able to move a muscle except for my head.
Whazzzz up!.
