Problem with the search

Postby mikeybound » Mon Dec 02, 2013 3:53 pm

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone involved for all the hard work that went into getting the site back up. I've loved this for nearly half my life, and it's great that we don't have to lose it.
Now, I tried searching NY for the tugs buddies section. It says the phrase is too common, so it can't be done. Is there really any problem with allowing this? And how common does a search have to be before it's dismissed?

I am not sure if they have any controal over this without editing the files on the server. As for how it determins if its too common is by the number of results that it brings back, but by entering in other stuff you might be able to get that results you want (the other options in the advance search).

The search system does seem pretty useless.

I believe I asked about it before and that it couldn't be fixed.

So sure? Apparently you can tweak the threshold to be considered common, but then you need to delete and rebuild the search index (ACP > Maintenance > Search Index) for it to apply. My guess would be that once a word is flagged as common, it's not tracked in the index from then on, so you'd need to rebuild it so it finds the data about it. Then it should work. :) (Then I can look up skirts and blindfolds and things like that here.)

what i usually do to search is go onto google, then type:

example site:www.tieupgames.net

replace "example" with whatever you want to search. it must have "site:www.tieupgames.net" on the end though, with a space between that and your word of course. all of the results will be on the tugs website.

you can also do it with other sites (e.g. youtube would be site:www.youtube.com).

hopefully this helps :D.

That relies on Google indexing the site fully, which you can't assume. If nothing else, Google takes time to do so because it has the entire Internet to worry about. :)
