CHAPTER TWO
MARISA
A soft breeze blew against me, making my hair sway in a flurry of chestnut locks. I gave a small smile as I watched my little sister skipping rope. An extra rope for me and several others were in a tangled heap to my right. I was sitting in the lush grass, its springy blades feeling comfortable on my bare frets and hands.
Little Elisa was a sweet young sister with hair just like mine, but much shorter. While mine flowed to my waist, hers stopped just above her shoulders. When she turned to me with a childish giggle and requested I play with her, I was inclined to agree.
I jogged over to her and grabbed a skipping rope. It had been quite a long time since I had skipped rope, so I was fairly certain I would be terrible at it. I gripped the handles at each end and took a few deep breaths before beginning to skip. To my side, Elisa was laughing joyfully and rapidly skipping like a master.
I smiled at her and tried to speed up, but ended up getting my ankle caught and toppling to the ground. I heard a familiar laugh and my heart stopped momentarily. When I spun around wildly, I saw an unmistakable head of chopped-short, crazy black hair that seemed to stick up in every direction.
"Aubrey!" I exclaimed excitedly, hugging her. She chuckled and hugged back slightly. "I haven't seen you around here in a while!" By 'here,' I meant this side of the business reserve house thing, by the way
She shrugged. "Eh. Whatever, Marisa. The ice cream here isn't good enough." she joked.
I laughed. If there was anything Aubrey was known for- besides, of coarse, her martial arts skills and short temper, it was her joking personality. Whether they were funny or not, Bree was usually telling some kind of joke. It was a bit weird sometimes coming from a girl of monstrous height and obvious muscles.
"What?" I feigned indigence. "Are you saying my ice cream isn't good enough for you?"
"Yes." she deadpanned. I humphed and stuck up my nose.
Bree stood, her baggy graphic tee rustling in the wind. With a last crooked grin brimming with mischief, she turned away. "I'm gonna get some ice cream. See ya soon," she called, sprinting away. She hated wasting time, and thought anything slow was a waste.
I stood there for a bit, watching after her with a giant smile covering my face. I was brought out of my thoughts when Elisa caught my attention again. I laughed and ran back to her, picking the skipping rope back up. We both were preparing to skip, when...
"Hey, Marisa!" I turned to see a very unwelcome sight. With a head full of wild blonde hair, it was Alexander Preston. He stopped by me with a grin. "Hey," he said flirtatiously looking me straight in the eye.
I rolled my eyes, making sure he could see, and turned away. "Buzz off, Alex." I grumbled, my happy moment ruined by this jerk. Before I could go far, he grabbed my arm and pulled me back.
"Come on," he breathed, getting right up in my face uncomfortably. "At least let me skip rope with you." he gave me what I think was meant to be a seductive stare. It made me want to puke all over his face.
"No," I muttered, pulling my arms away but continuing to look him in the eyes. "I won't go with you."
He shrugged in an 'I-don't-care' kind of way. "Doesn't matter. I was just supposed to distract you, anyway." he drawled.
I blinked. "Wait... What?"
Before I could react, I was jerked backwards, duct tape sealed over my mouth securely. I tried to struggle instantly, but I wasn't strong enough. Whoever it was took me to a tree, where they tied my wrists tightly together behind it using a skipping rope. My arms could just barely reach around it, and it made my shoulders ache dully.
I began to thrash and kick, but someone quickly knotted my ankles together with a second skipping rope and I found it much harder. I heard a little muffled yelp and my head turned. My eyes popped when I saw Elisa being tied right next to my tree. They tied her simply with one slender wrist to the other and then stepped back to admire their handiwork.
I immediately thought, 'What the hell?' It was the boys from our neighborhood. I could make out Alex, Duke and Jake before someone else standing behind me tied a blindfold around my eyes. "Well, well, well." a conceited asshole who shall not be named chuckled. "What do we have here?"
I mmfed angrily and tried to kick out, but no one was near enough for me to hit. "Looks like this one is a kicker," another boy added. "We might have to fix that."
Someone grabbed my ankles and pulled them up, tying me at the knee. I managed to get them with my kicks and heard them swear. With anger, they forced my legs against the tree and tied me to it.
I heard, oddly enough, some laughter. I immediately recognized the lighthearted giggle as Elisa. "Heh, you're funny stupid man." I heard her chime, then a growl of anger from Duke.
"I'm not stupid," he muttered in exasperation. I could only guess at what had happened, but he was pretty stupid sometimes, so I doubted my sister's conclusion was far off. Knowing his attention was diverted, I shook my head furiously and managed to shake off the blindfold.
Duke had tangled up a skipping rope that he had been planning to tie Elisa's ankles with. That must have been why she called him stupid. Rage boiled up in the place in my heart reserved for Elisa. I tried to yell at him, but he barely noticed my 'mmmf!'
However, Alexander the Censored Word had heard. He turned to me with a smirk and I glared at him full strength.
"Idiot."
Everyone's heads snapped around to the sound. It was Aubrey, leaning against a tree and eating from a tub of ice cream. Immediately, questions poured out of Alex's mouth; "When did you get there? Why didn't we notice? Where did you get that ice cream?"
Bree shrugged nonchalantly. "I got here when I moved, you didn't notice 'cause you suck, and, believe me," Her face suddenly became serious. "You don't wanna KNOW where I got this ice cream."
While she talked, Duke edged to the side, and now he turned and ran, quickly followed by some other boys. Alex was last to run. She watched them leave with an uncaring glance to the side. When they were out of sight, she walked over and untied me, then Elisa. I ran to her to make sure she was okay.
"Sorry, Marisa," Aubrey apologized as she watched our reunion, "Looks like I got you caught up in a girls vs. boys tie up war."
I turned to her as a grin slowly built up on my face. "Oh, don't worry," I said, evil shining in my eyes. "I'm excited. Who else is in?"
Aubrey smirked at my enthusiasm. "Penelope, Amelia, Elisa, Amber, you and I." she answered my question, "and we're gonna strike soon. So, you want in?" She offered me a rough, tan hand for shaking.
I took it. "Yeah, I'm in."
"Good." she chuckled with a grin mimicking mine, only with more trouble making behind hers. "I was hoping you'd say that."
