Once upon a time

This, my friends, is an alternative version of “Hansel and Gretel”! I hope you enjoy it.

Once upon a time, there lived a boy and a girl all alone in the forest. They were brother and sister and their parents were dead.
One day they went for a walk. By nightfall, they came across a house, they hadn’t seen before. As they had been walking most of the day, they were hungry and went to knock on the door. As they came closer, they noticed that the house looked funny. That’s because it was made of gingerbread, they soon realized.
They said to each other: “What a funny-looking house? Wonder if you could eat it? They started nibbling on it, but soon they heard a cranky voice from inside saying: “Who’s that nibbling on my house?” and a little old lady looked out of the door. When she saw the two children, she invited them in for a glass of milk and some cookies. As they were very tired after having walked all day, they soon fell asleep.
The next morning, they noticed that the little old lady had, somehow, carried them into a room and put them to bed. A nice bed it was, too. The lady came in with a tray full of food and said: “When you’ve eaten, there is one thing I’d like you to do for me. You see; the oven hasn’t been working properly for a while now, no matter what I do. I’d like one of you to climb in and see if you can figure out what the problem is. Can you do that for me?”
“No problem!” Hansel said, “I’ll do it” They finished their meal and went out to the oven.
“Ah, there you are!” the old lady said. “Now, young man, hold out your hands so I can tie them together. That way, you can reach all the way in.” Hansel did as he was told, and she took a piece of rope, wound it a couple of times around his wrists, and knotted it off. She led him to the oven and opened the door, so he could climb in. As he did so, she took another piece of rope, wound it around his ankles and knotted it off. Then she muttered, as she slammed the door shut, and started heating up the oven: “Stupid boy. Well behaved, but stupid. Now little girl, it’s your turn. Hold out your hands for me please!” Too frightened to do anything else, Gretel did as the woman told her to. Soon she had her hands tied the same way as her brother. The lady had tied a rope around Gretel’s waist, pinning her arms to her side, “Just to be on the safe side,” the lady said. Now they were heading for the oven as well, that had become quite hot by now. But when she leaned forward to tie Gretel’s feet together, she kicked her hard on the chin. So hard in fact, that the lady was knocked unconscious and landed in a heap on the floor. Thankfully, she landed next to the oven. Gretel quickly opened the oven-door and helped her brother out. She untied his ankles and together they pried the lady inside and closed the oven-door with a loud bang. To be fair, Hansel did most of the prying, as Gretel still had her arms tied to her sides. Then they walked out of the house. It wasn’t until they came home, that they realized they still had their hands, and in Gretel’s case her arms, tied. As they were too tired to do anything about it that night, they decided to untie each other the next morning. As they lay in their beds that night, they said to each other: “Now that was an adventure to be remembered!”
The End
Whazzzz up!.
