An Education: Q&A - POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!!

With the kind permission of the questioner at DeviantArt, I'm going to reprint here some Q&A sessions that have appeared there around the stories posted so far. You can also use this as a place to comment on, if you have read it, the two new stories in the book, so be warned - here be spoilers!

To Mr Small,

Have you encountered any other captive like Cassie Craig and her friends up at Holderness Manor? Especially one who is as little as her and who encouraged you, dared you to tie her and her friends up? And if you happen to run into her and her group of friends, knowing what you know now, would you have any hesitation of tying them up again?

Mr Small replies

I can honestly say that I have never met anyone like that young lady - Cassie Craig I believe you said was her name - in my career. That is not to say that I never meet with younger people when at work - as much as Mister Tall and I try to avoid it, it does happen from time to time - but usually we genuinely do lock them in a room and make sure they are kept out of the way, even to the extent of one of us staying with them.

That particular girl, however, was unique. I don't think any adult has ever challenged me about how I have secured them, let alone a young girl. It was a different experience, and believe me when I say the only reason I acquiesced was because I had seen what she and her sister could do.

If I ever ran into them again, would I have any hesitation in tying them up? Yes, but if it was necessary I would respect them, and give them the same respect I and Mister Tall give every person we meet in our work.

To the Boss of the Pearl of the Great Price,

I'm sorry you got caught during your last job on Capt. Craig and her family. But were you surprised that the kids, particularly two of them, weren't scared at all, and seemed to make you look foolish time and time again? Is it true that they contributed in thwarting your plans?

Not that I think you're foolish. Someone who rose to be a boss of the Pearl of Great Price is surely intelligent, smart and resourceful.

And has the Grandmaster contacted you? I assume he would like to get you free as soon as possible so you won't be able to divulge any secrets of the gang to the police. And does the grandmaster know the exact circumstance of your capture?

And would you like to get revenge for what happened on that day?

From The Boss

I thank you, Tony, for your condolences - but you tell me, how the heck would you have reacted? When great hulking men, armed with guns and bats, go into a house you expect whoever is there to react in fear and quiver in fright, right?

But those five - and especially the two younger ones - they were different. It was almost as if they treated it as a game at our expense. At fist I put it down to the idiocy of my men, but by the end of that night I truly felt that soemthing was conspiring against us.

They certainly stopped us getting very far with our interrogation of Captain Craig, and in the end their shenanigans meant we were outwitted and caught - thanks, in no small part, to a little old grey haired lady in smart clothes as well.

Does the Grandmaster know? I pray he does not, or I will have to pay a price for it. He has made no attempt to contact me, so I do not know what he thinks.

But if he does, and if I ever get out of here, I will pay another visit to them - with a better plan...

To Cassie Craig,

You have said that all four times masked men visited your home, you had great fun.

Which of those four did you have the most fun? And which would be the least fun? The first masked men during that afternoon? The men stayed the night, played Sorry with you, and gave you your favorite gag? Mr Small? Or the one connected to the Pearl of Great Price? And why?

And during the last day of summer, you have so many fun activities. Which one of those were your favorites?

From Cassie

Hi Mr Tonifranz - I had the most fun when the nice men stayed and played Sorry with us before staying the night. They made me feel nice and comfy all the time, and stayed with us to make sure we didn't get hurt until I got to go into the other room.

As for the least favourite - I didn't really hate any of them. The first time was probably the scariest, because I knew the others were scared, but Jenny made it a game for me.

As for the special day, definitely the quiz - my favourite gag, my favourite tie, and everyone having fun.

To Heidi,

How surprised were you that your pen friend happened to know people who played tie up games? Did you expect those activities, particularly being held by thugs and tied up, to again happen in England? Or were you expecting a summer break from those kinds of activities?

And how did you enjoy the summer? What's your favorite activity during that magnificent last day?

Thank you.

From Heidi

Hello Tony.

Surprised - I was amazed, and surprised at the same time. You think of England as a much different country from my home, and that the sort of things I've experienced at home would never ever happen. I was really looking forward to a time doing something different - and then I met Cassie and Jenny, and life was full of color.

I must say, however, you have a much more polite class of criminal - that Mister Small was real cute. The other guys, when we went to meet the Craigs, not so much.

I enjoyed the summer though - once Alicia had worked out her issues, she was great, and we had a lot of fun. And on that last day, undoubtedly the surprise of finding Nats, Mum and Aunt Veronica had come, and getting to race against them and spend some close time with them as well.

I spoke to Mum, and she told em that they will be coming over to see me soon - really looking forward to that!

To Alicia Bowden,

First of all, I'm glad you have coped with what had happened, and are starting to like playing tie up games with your new friends.

So before summer, how did you view Jenny? You probably didn't expect to spend so much summer with her. Now that summer is over, how much did your opinion of her change?

Speaking of which, I would like to ask a couple of questions on that day with Mr Small.

Did the fact that it was Jenny who actually tied you up made it much worst, than it would be had it been Mr Small that tied you up?

How did you feel seeing Cassie, and Suzie, laughing, singing, and seeming to have so much fun while you're so afraid, and that Jenny and Heidi seem to treat nonchalantly?

Is it true that you tied up Suzie almost every morning since that day? I imagine you got really good using her as a dummy!

Now that you're friends with them, do you like being tied up? And do you like tying up other people? Would you like to tie up your big sister too? Or do you prefer that she tie you up? How about your Mom? Would you like to play games with her too once you got back home?

And do you find it frustrating that your cousin and her friend couldn't see the danger in what they're doing during that visit to the Craigs that Thursday night?

Thank you.

From Alicia

Thank you, for the kind words and the greeting.

How did I feel about Jenny? Well, I wish now I could say indifference, but that was not the case. She was a nobody, and in my book then a nobody deserved to be treated as such. So I mocked her, made fun of her, and yes I bullied her. No excuses, I did it. Then we were robbed, and I got all the sympathy, all the attention - until the same people robbed Jenny's house, and she became the centre of attention.

I was jealous - and when the summer came I could not wait to not see her for seven weeks. So who comes into the room on the first week? Jenny and her sister.

Obviously, things are very different now, but that day and all that happened just seemed to crystallise my thinking about her. I didn’t want to join in the game with Cassie and my cousin as it reminded me of that night. But then I went downstairs, and walked in on the two masked men tying up Grandma and her friend.

Was it worse because Jenny tied me up? Yes - for two reasons. Firstly, I was scared witless. Secondly, it was my worst enemy doing it - and she seemed to be enjoying it! I mean, I saw how he tied up Jenny and the others, so I know it would have been bad, but I was humiliated - and it got worse when Suzie and Cassie treated it as a big game, and Heidi and Jenny just took it! Bad enough it turned out my pen friend for five years was a tie-up freak, I thought, but my cousin was becoming one! I know I cried, but it was as much out of anger as fear.

And it was anger that made me tie up Suzie every day - yes, every day, with Heidi teaching me. I did not want to be tied up again, and at the same time I wanted revenge on Jenny, on Cassie - for running my holiday and making me feel small. I have become very, very good at tying, but in all that time I did not want to be tied - and I so regret that now. I can say that because, when I finally got my revenge, I just ranted and raved. I did not know what I was doing - until Grandma stopped me.

So now Jenny and I are friends. The rest of that summer was great fun, as I realised it was not something to be afraid of, been tied up, if you are with others who understand it. Mind you, Jenny and Cassie have a lot to learn - that night when those hoodlums broke in could have ended a lot more quickly if they had stayed in the room with the rest of us! I've tried to tell them that, but only time will tell.

If I am honest, I prefer to do the tying rather than be tied - I think it is better to be in control. Not that I hate been tied up - I've grown quite fond of it - but I prefer to be the one in charge. Mum and Angela are finding that out right now...

To Suzanne Holderness,

First of all, congratulations for having a very enjoyable summer.

Now for the questions!!

Cassie had fun every time masked men came to visit her. Do you also see the masked men as 'nice men' and did you you also enjoy the time they were with you like Cassie did?

Did Alicia's attitude and behavior towards you change from the start because of a)Mr Small's visit, and b) the Craig's sleepover at Holderness Manor, and if so, how?

With regards to Alicia, she said that you were actually tied up everyday by her (with probably the times you spend with Cassie at her home). How long each day day did you actually stay tied up and gagged? Did Heidi try to restrain your older cousin from overdoing things? I imagine you enjoyed it very much, but do you actually mind being Alicia's test subject/model/dummy for almost the entire summer?

I've asked this of Heidi and Cassie, so I'll ask you too. During that magnificent Last Day of Summer, what was your favorite activity?

Now that you're going back to school, I imagine your tie up time would get reduced and you won't get tied up everyday anymore. Do you have plans on how to get as much time tied up as possible now that Cassie, Alicia, and Jenny aren't around to tie you up anymore? Or would you wait until you meet them again before you can be tied up again really good?

Oh, I forgot to ask your cousin Alicia this, so can you also ask her for me what her favorite activity on that Last Day of Summer is?

Thank you.

Suzie says

Aww, thanks - it was a great summer, and I wish it wasn't over!

Cassie's great and she taught me a lot of neat new games and tricks - and yeah, they were mostly nice men. I loved it when they tied me and Cassie up - and even more when we managed to get free.

Ali was in a funny mood most of the summer anyway - but after the nice man you call Mr Small came, she almost became obsessed. When she had her turn at the sleepover, I realised she was really scared, and I'm glad she played with us now. She was a lot more fireendly and laughing the last couple of weeks.

She di dindeed tie me up almost every morning - and Cassie took over when I visited there. I like been tied and gagged anyway, so it didn't bother me, but Heidi got a bit upset. That's why she taught me a few tricks as well. I didn't miind been the victim 0 but one day I'll get her.

That last day - the best bit was sittign no Grandma's lap and dosing off in the afternoon sun. I asked Alicia, and she said ti was findign her sister Angela in that room.

I'm ging to see Cassie regularly, and I think I'll get some practice in between times - I'll see if Bobby can help out, as well as Mummy.

Thanks for asking - nice talking to you!

To the Grandmaster of the Pearl of Great Price,

I'm sorry for the failure of the recent operations against Capt. Craig. I hope you would answer my questions, but if it would compromise your liberty or the liberty of your associates, or would reveal sensitive information about future operations, I would understand if you won't answer.

First of all, how much damage did the activities of Captain Craig, and the publication of the article written by Mrs Connie Brown, did to your organization? How many of your men were caught in that operation, and how much was lost?

Are you aware of the exact circumstances of the Boss's capture? Anyway, are you working to free him so that he won't be forced to "confess" more of what he knows to the police? And what are your plans to recover from this recent setback?

Thank you.

I received the following comminque

Sir,

I know not how you managed to communicate with me, but be assured that the significant damage to our financial lines done by Mrs Brown, and the loss of manpower attributed to Captain Craig, will not deter us from our path of righteousness.

Secondly, I have heard rumours, but until I secure the release of my operative I can make no further comment.

Do not attempt to contact us again, or we will contact you.

To Jennifer Craig,

I hope you have more happy summers as you appeared to have this last summer.

I've asked Alicia this, so I'll as you this. How did you view Alicia before the summer, and how much did the events of the summer change your opinion of her? Were you surprised to see her when your grandmother brought you to Holderness Manor? And were you happy, or at least delighted, when you got to tie up Alicia at the masked men's orders?

Seeing how Alicia reacted to the first two times she was tied up by men in masks, were you thankful that Cassie and you have practiced being tied up before that first robbery? How much did it help to cope with what subsequently happened, and did it make it more fun, for you, or least, Cassie? Were you in the least bit scared, seeing as Cassie and Suzie had no fear at all, and you acted like you weren't afraid at all, and that you even enjoyed it enormously, despite knowing the true nature of their visits? And how much did you learn from the robbers and home invaders, particularly on how you tie and gag, and on lessons in life?

How surprised were you to walk in your father tying up Suzie and Cassie, learn that your parents also played tie up games? I bet you're really happy that you can play it openly and without having to hide it.

Are you looking forward to the new school year, especially with your new friend Alicia? Do you believe that you might become more popular as a result from the association?

And during that last day, which activity was your favorite?

Thank you.

From Jenny Craig

Oh - I'd heard you'd talked to some of the others, and wondered whan you'd ask me some questions.

ALicia, Alicia - truth be told, I thoguth she was a stuck up little... Anyway, she delighted in teasign me, adn I didn't like that, so when we were tied up the first time by masked men, and I was the centre of attention, I enjoyed it a bit too much.

Then we went to Holderness Manor, and there she was. I could see Cassie had hit it off with her cousin, and Heidi was friendly, so I tried to be nice, but then the games started - and he arrived. I was more than happy to tie her up at his orders - it was payback time, and I loved every second of it.

OF course, given what happened later, I regret some of it now, but at the time I was focused on geting my own back first, and Cassie second. Yuo ask if the practice made us thankful - it did me. Cassie thinks it's one big game, but I knew some of what was happening. IF she wanted it to be a game, then i was willign to go alogn with that.

Besides, I like been helpless as well. As it is, when Alicia flipped out I just let it happen - first thing I learned about been helpless is to let things go as they will. They all taught me that - and also how to be tied very tightly and very comfortably. And now we're friends -maybe not best friend,s but friends. So peopel change - I may do as well.

As for walking in on Dad - the biggest fear I an dCassie had was that Mum and Dad would not like what we weer doing. So to find out that they not only did not mind, they had played those games as well, was a great releif. We now have rules, but we can play at home within those rules. It also helped when those masked thugs called - we laughed, everyone else laughed. I still wish Cassie and Jenny had stayed with us, though...

The new year - it's going to eb different. I'm not worried about Alicia - her 'friends' on the other hand, I'm not so sure about.

As for that last day - it was all magical, but I guess my favourite bit was the sports day.

I’ve read those two new tales on your ebook, and I must say, I really enjoyed it.

The problem is that I can’t really give much of a review without giving spoilers!!

Anyway, for the first tale, it was pretty funny. Now we know that where Cassie and Jenny got their taste for being tied up. I guess if there wasn’t any Scooby Doo cartoons to inspire them, then some other thing would cause them to love being tied up. Dad, and the two aunts, sure are an inspiration for their current activities. I won’t say anything else, but rest assured that it was a very good story.

For the second, oh boy. Let me just say thank you for how it turned out. I was delighted knowing what she would become when she grew up, and knowing that the Craigs and Holderness would remain close throughout the years. And also for the numerous hints of future stories contained in that one, including the present one.

I won’t say more, but to say to other readers of the series to get it too. It’s really good.

To John Craig,

Congratulations on organizing such a successful event on that last day of summer. The concept, and the execution was simply superb!!

First of all, how surprised were you to walk in and see Suzie tied up and gagged and Cassie on the process of tying herself? Were you totally shocked, or did you consider it inevitable considering that you played such games while you were young? And before that day, did you ever have any idea on the real reason they coped so well with the two masked men incident?

Anyway, when you were young, how old were you when you first tied up your sisters? And seeing that you apparently were very skilled at such a tender age, where did you get your tying knowledge? Did you get at it through trial and error? Did somebody else teach you? Or were you members of organizations that taught knots (scouts, etc).

And how did you conceive the entire event of the last day and to include everyone and everybody? I gather you had help from Sir Desmond and the others, but how much of the individual activities were your ideas? An which of the others contributed which ideas?

Thank you.

John Craig replies

I was surprised, but I had wondered for some time how they had managed to cope well both times we had intruders. Seeing Cassie and Suzie there explained a lot, and it also brought back a lot of memories.

I had tied up my sisters and my mother from when I was Cassie's age, having learned a few things in Scouts, and even more from my dad. So I guess there is something in the blood, but also they managed to hide it very well. I guess it just comes with the territory.

But it led to the Saturday, and then we started planning something special for that last day of summer. I led things off, but Lord Holderness found the venue, and Lady Holderness "roped in" the rest of the family on her side. My sisters needed no persuading, but we also asked April, our babysitter, to come. she was less keen, btu did anyway.

We met two weeks before and planned everything out. The one unknown was Heidi's mother and aunt, and her cousin. Lady Holderness got two days notice, but met them at the airport and explaiend everything. She even suggested the mass kidnapping at the start of the day.

As for the actibvities - I and Alexander Holderness arranged the games, the surprises in the top floor were my wife's idea, the word game Cassie's, and the other events Lady Holderness.

To Jennifer Craig,

First of all, i want to ask, how did you react and feel when that robbers came in that afternoon, and when you were held hostage with your daughters when your husband went out to do their bidding? And how did you see Jenny and Cassie react? They seemed brave, but looking at it in hindsight, did you notice that they were somehow playful, even excited, when all those events are happening?

And do you think that your reaction to it gave the impression to them that you would disapprove playing tie up games, and therefore tried to keep it more of a secret from you and your husband?

How surprised were you to walk in to your husband tying up and gagging your two daughters and their friend? I imagine it was pretty shocking, but looking back, not that surprising.

And during that time when you were with your sisters Cassie and Connie and your mother in law, how terrified were you compared to the first two times? And what was your reaction to when Cassie and Suzie came down the stairs bound hand and foot, crept up to Mrs Craig (Granny), easily ejected their gags, and told the men to tie them up more securely, and gag them tighter? Then they all said such silly things when the men said, "Any last words?" I imagine that it made you understand how Cassie reacted those first two times masked men visited you.

Were you surprised at the mass kidnapping that happened at dawn of that magnificent last day, or did you know what would happen in advance?

Thanks.

Mrs Jennifer Craig replies

Both times, I freely admit my biggest fear was not for myself, but for the girls. I did not want them to be hurt, and was willing to do anything possible to stop that happening. So when that afternoon Jenny said to Cassie they were goign to play the game with me, I was so proud of her for suggesting that she and Cassie agreed to treat it as such. Then that horrible night, I presumed either Jenny or April had said the same thing.

Of course, now I know that Cassie at least really did think of it as a game - and given I used to play similar games with my sister in law Connie, I can understand why she thinks that. But if they wanted to be playful, and not realise what was really going on, I was not going to spoil that illusion. I guess that came over to them as fear, and that is why they said nothing.

Of course, secrets will out, and it was a surprise when I found John tying them up. He came down with Miranda and explained what they had discovered, and suddenly everything seemed to fit together. Once we laid out some ground rules, then I had no problem.

Mind you, when those thugs from the Eastern group invaded, I was really scared - because I knew something of the work Cassie and Connie did, I thought we were in very real trouble. so when Cassie and Suzie hopped in, planted themselves at Miranda's feet, and made fun of the gang - it was priceless, and a real relief. I was even more proud of her then - especially as it gave time for Lady Holderness to come in and save the day.

Was I suprised at the start of the day event? Actually, yes - when John woke me up, told me to put on a dressing gown and he taped me up, I knew we were been taken to a house. But I had no idea that the older girls were there already, or that so many of us would be together at the start of the day. It provided a perfect start to a perfect day - and there were surprises throughout that day. I had some inkling of what was coming, such as the race against the girls, but other parts were a complete surprise!

To Lady Lucinda Holderness,

My lady, first of all, congratulations for your part in conceiving and organizing that last day of summer. It went so smoothly without any hitch, and thanks, and thanks for actively participating in it as well.

First of all, after the gentlemen robbers came for a visit, you told Cassie and the rest of the girls how you were tied up, which was far lighter than you were actually tied up. I imagine you did it to spare the young ones, but knowing what you know now about how they like to be tied up, would you still tell them you were tied up lightly even if you're not?

Second, when you and your friend Miranda Craig prepared that play date, did you already know that Jenny and Alicia were already classmates? And before that sleepover, did you know the antagonism that existed between Jenny Craig and Alicia?

My first question is, what was your reaction upon discovering your granddaughter Alicia ranting and raving at her cousin and friends, who were bound and gagged?

How did Mrs Strong and Cabot react to your proposal for that last day? And did Natalie know in advance that she would be tied up most of the day?

Finally, did Alexander and Susan tie you up while they were children, and did you tie up Susan too?

Thank you.

From the desk of Lady Lucinda Holderness

Sir,

I thank you for your letter, and hope I can answer some of your questions. I also thank you for the compliments about our family day event, although much of the credit has to go to my husband and John Craig for that.

Yes, when those two polite but insistent men called, I did slightly fabricate how Miranda and I were secured. I did that, as you say, to spare the feelings of the younger ones, but had I known then everything that had happened in the play room I think I may have taken a different approach. I always prefer to be honest, to a fault at times.

When I invited Miranda, I was vaguely aware that her older grandaughter and mine were in the same school, but I did not know they were in the same class. I was aware that at times Alicia played a little too much on her heritage and family connections, but I was not aware of any particular feeling of ill will towards any other girls. Of course, I was disabused of that ignorance when the Craig family came to dinner, and I heard Alicia's outpouring.

I knew events of recent months, including our own incarceration, had bothered her, but when I heard what she said my eyes were, as they say, fully opened. I had had a similar experience in the past, so I let her get out what she could, and when the moment was right told her gently to stop. As has been documented, that was enough to bring everything out, and the cathartic effect of her response cannot be underestimated. I am pleased to say she has now apologised most poofusely, and she is a much better person for it.

It was a wekk or so before the planned party that Mrs Strong telephoned to make me aware of their planned surprise visit. I and my husband met them at Hethrow, and after seeing them installed at a hotel explained some of the things that had happened over dinner. they were surprised, but understood - it transpired they and Heidi have had similar experiences. So they were more than willing to incorporate their surprise for Heidi into our plans. Natalie was with us, and readily agreed to be a part with the girls, right from the first moment.

Now, to your last question, there were occasional games with my children in their youth, but not too many. They did tie me up, and I also tied them up. I got the distinct impression Alexander bound Anne up much more than I did, however. As for Susan, I did not presonally bind her, but as she was a friend of Anne's at University I cannot say for certain what may have happened there.

Again, I thank you for your letter.

Yours sincerely,

Lucinda Holderness.

To Capt. Cassandra Craig,

Captain, congratulations on the successful conclusion on your mission in apprehending those goons and their boss from the Pearl of Great Price.

First of all, I have a question. You're now a teacher. But you were a captain of some government force. Did you resign your job in the government to take up a new career path, or were you just taking a break from all that secret spy stuff for a while and went to teach until a new mission is available?

You were away quite a long time. I think nearly a decade or so, judging by how Cassie didn't really know you, but Jenny had an inkling of who you were. Hm, during that time, did all your efforts go against the Pearl of Great Price, or was it only the latest of a series of villains? How much damage did your work do to the Pearl of Great Price?

Speaking of which, when did you first learn that your sister Connie is getting married? I'm sure you would, if you could, have attended that event (and even the aftermath at Cassie's house!) Were you surprised that you and your sister were working against the same organization?

That leads me to this question. Did you arrange for the entire event to happen that Thursday night, knowing that they would break in, tie all of you up, and that in doing so, you'd be able to trap the boss and such? If so, that is such a work of genius! I'm sure your boss gave you a promotion, and big raise. Perhaps I shouldn't address you as Captain, but Major, or even Colonel!

How close to the ropes is the organization anyway, thanks to you and your sister's work? Are you very close to apprehending the Grandmaster of the Pearl of Great Price? If the information is sensitive, you need not answer this, because spies of the Grandmaster might get wind of it.

How surprise were you to walk in the room and see Cassie and her new friend tie up Jenny and two of her older friends? And when you tied up Cassie, were you taking it easy on her, or did you underestimate her escaping skills?

What's your reaction to seeing Cassie and her friend being such naughty kids during that Thursday night with the goons?

Anyway, I'm sure you were notified in advance to make sure that you were free that day to participate, but did you know you would be kidnapped that early morning?

Thank you.

Miss Cassandra Craig replies

Hello Tony,

Forgive me if I cannot give a straight answer to many of your questions, goddo and valid as they may be. I am bound by certain strictures and legal rules on the matters you ask about.

What I can say is this - that I have served my country to the best of my abilties for over ten years, in a variety of roles, and with great success. My current career move is partly becasue I am well overdue for a change in pace, and partly because when you pass a certain age it is not possible for you to carry on with certain duties.

I also missed my family - it was a great sadness to me that I could not get back for Connie's wedding, and I am trying to make up for that. I had no idea of the work she was doing, and naturally she had no idea of mine, so to find we were looking into the same group of people at the same time was frightening and exhilirating at the same time.

And then there's my little dynamo of a namesake. The last time I saw Cassie she was a babe in arms, and to see her not only active and cute, but carrying on the fine Craig family tradition - it was magnificent. She also seems to have inherited the courage of my father and me - must be something in the genes. And yes, I underestimated her skills, as John told me later.

She's also inherited some of the recklessness of her father as well - as I saw when she and her friend hopped into the room that night, and drove that man to distraction. Officially, I cannot confirm or deny your supposition, but I can assure you that both Connie and myself had security measures in place. What I will say is if I could, I would have given Cassie a medal.

That special day - we knew we were been taken there, but the first that my mother and I knew of how we were going to get there was when David knocked on our door and we saw Connie in the back of the car. That is the genuine truth.

To Sir Desmond Holderness,

My lord, congratulations for organizing that last day of summer. My lady Holderness said that you, and with Mr Craig, were primarily responsible for the success of that day.

First of all, is that my lord didn't play tie up games when you were young, like most of your family. How do you view this activities as an outsider? I'm sure you, my lord, don't disapprove, and the way you run that family event, and donated considerable resources to it, shows that you enjoyed it too, seeing all of them tied up. Has Lady Holderness ever asked you to tie her up?

What was your reaction to the robbery by the so called Gentlemen robbers?

Anyway, how influential is your family around your local district? You were able to influence the local media, and the police, to keep out the names of the children involved.

Hm, your grandmother, and your aunts were also tied by robbers in 1936. Have any of them told you personally of the events of that year?

Speaking of which, how old was Holderness Manor itself? I'm sure that my lord's family owned that piece of land long before it was granted the baronetcy in the early 19th century. According to Lady Holderness, your family might have been the local landlords even before the Conquest!

Thank you.

Lord Holderness replies

Sir,

Thank you for your note and the kind words. It was a great joy and pleasure to arrange a fitting send off for my granddaughters and their friends for the summer they had all shared in. I personally attribute much of the planning to Mister John Craig - I merely facilitated and provided the resources and location.

As to how I view the games, if my family is happy and they are safe, then who am I to complain? It would be wrong, however, to say I did not play these games as a child - I merely did not find them as satisfying as other pastimes. As to your question concerning my wife - I'm sorry, but a gentleman does not reveal such intimate details.

The robbery by the two miscreants called the Gentleman Robbers - and I should acknowledge they well deserve the name - was a shock, but the loss of physical items is not a great loss. My family emerged realtively unscathed, as did their friends, and that is what I am grateful for. My one concern was that the younger ones were not the focus of attention, so I used what little pull I had with the local constabulary and media to keep their names, as you say, out of it.

The history of what is now Holderness Manor actually dates back to the late 9th Century - as is well known, Holderness is mentioned in the Domesday Book, as a collection of dwellings under a feudal lord. The oldest part of the current House dates back to the time of Queen Elizabeth, where a Frances Holderness is recorded as having attended Her Majesty at Hampton Court.

It was actually my late grandmother who told me of her adventures when she was telling me the story of the Hodlerness Shadow. There are many other stories of the ghost helping out, and one day I will arrange for the history of our family, the house and the legends to be published.

Again, I thank you for your letter, and I remain,

Holderness

To Connie Brown,

First of all, congratulations for your nuptials to Mr Brown. I wish you have a happy marriage, and many wonderful children!!

And congratulations on that article that exposed some of the doings of the Pearl of Great Price! I’m sure today, you’re more famous for it than before.

My first question, is Connie a nickname, and if so, what is your real first name? Is it Constance?

Your brother said that he tied you and your sister when he was ten, which would make you six. Do you remember the first time he tied you up, or does it seem that he’s been tying you up ever since you can remember? And have you tied up your older sister, and your mother, and conversely, have they tied you up too? I gather that the events of the last few weeks brought back a lot of memories!

Anyway, I guess you’ve got an idea of what your brother’s family did after your wedding.

Were you surprised that you and your long lost sister Cassie happened to be working against the same organization?

How surprised was Mr Brown when he learned about your family’s predilection for tie up games? He seems to disbelieve when Cassie began to talk about what they did after the wedding, and John seemed to have to teach a few tricks in order to participate in that last day of summer. What was his reaction when Mr Craig first asked him to participate in that activity? I imagine he couldn’t believe his ears at first before agreeing.

Were you surprised that your nieces seemed to carry on the proud Craig tradition of being tied up? And what was your reaction to Cassie and her friends making fun of the men during that Thursday night, sliding into the room, planting themselves at your mother’s feet, easily ejecting their gag in front of the goons, and telling them that they need to tie them up and gag them better?

And finally, were you surprised at the kidnapping during the dawn of that last day of summer, or were you expecting it?

Thank you.

Connie Brown replies

Hello Tony - and thanks for your letter. No, Connie is my real name - not Constance or anything fancy, just Connie Elaine Craig Brown now.

I vaguely remember that first time - it was a family party, and I was wearing a sleeveless dress when I was grabbed from behind and made to come into John’s room. I remember seeing Cassie there, smiling but unable to talk, and then he tied me to a little chair in the room. After that - well, I don’t remember too much, but I liked the idea of been helpless.

There were a few occasions, when I was eleven or twelve, when I’d tie up Cassie and Mum when John and Dad were away. We’d take turns, either tying each other up on our own or two of us together. As I got older, however, and first John and then Cassie left home, I just had to contend myself with reading books on the subject - until recently.

When John told me about Jenny and Cassie, and that they had started playing, it brought all those memories back. He told me the plans he, Jennifer and Mum had made for after the wedding and I wished, really wished I could have been there with them. I didn’t tell Dave - at that point I hadn’t even told him of the games I had played - but then when we came back, rather earlier than expected, and we got caught up in the Pearl of Great Price attempt, he got a very quick, very detailed awareness.

To say he was surprised was an understatement - especially when I told him about what Cassie and little Suzie did. I only saw them hopping in, but I heard the rest, especially the way the older girls responded when they were asked if they had any last words. I had to stop myself from laughing - and I heard a bit of my father’s voice in her as well.

For the record, I have no idea if my sister had set things up that night. I knew these were dangerous people, however, which is why Dave and I had a dual password security system set up. He sat there as I told him everything that had happened, and just shook his head before saying, and I quote “Been a little firebrand runs in your family, doesn’t it?”

He had never done anything like this before, but I know he and John spent a few evenings together, so when he woke me up that morning and bound my hands behind my back I knew he had done a great job learning. Then we drove to Mum’s house, picked up her and Cassie, and - well, you know the rest. I knew what was coming, at least in part, but I was surprised at Dave’s role.

Thanks again for your letter.

Connie Brown.
