It does. But you rarely hear the word 'hence' in conversation or see it in documents despite its simplicity. At least, *I* rarely do. Even so, i quite agree that it's a pretty spurious reason to accuse someone of plagiarism. And it's not *that* rare a word. I knew it as a child, for crying out loud. It's not like she was using some fancy obscure word such as hebetude (which my spell-check doesn't even recognize as a valid word), mendacity, perspicacious, or phlegmatic... all words describing personality traits (meaning dullness of mind, stubbornness, being quick on the uptake, and apathetic; in that order).

And how is this racist?!?!

Well, the professor's assumption that a non-white student couldn't write an original paper using words like 'hence' probably has a lot to do with it.

But how would you know he wouldn't do the same thing with a white student (i.e. how would you know he wouldn't think it wasn't plagiarised if the student was white)?

No, you don't, no. You understand nothing, Mr. White Guilt. Which is expected of someone who resides in United States of No_Ethnic_Identity.

A bit of an over-simplification, don't you think?
