New computer

Postby Jay Feely » Wed Apr 26, 2017 9:57 pm

I want to buy a new computer so I can type up my stories rather than using my phone or ipad. But my old one is broken beyond repair. So I need one with enough storage for pictures, stories, videos, and games. No Mac. Any suggestions?

This is not the place to ask.
You should post your questions on a PC/gaming forum.

Storage can be upgraded on pretty much any device. So that's pretty much irrelevant.

What really matters is the type of games you plan on playing.
If you're planning on playing any of the more recent games at high resolution, you'll probably want to set aside a substantial amount of money to get a powerful CPU, a high performance video/graphics card and some added RAM.

I've had a toshiba for about 8 years, thing still runs but a little rusty. Was good for gaming but now probably just typing since it's been so long. I would imagine they have newer, better toshibas now...

It's easy enough to shop for computers online these days; especially if you already know the specs you need (Ram, storage space, and so on) to accomplish the things you want to do. Most stores will deliver locally for free, though delivery can take a few days.

I got ya. Luckily I built my PC myself, just tell me a few questions.

What are you gonna use the PC for?

Where will you put it?

Have you had experience with PCs?

Can you maintain a PC?
Woah, don't mind if I do.

First, screw the computer. If you have something you want to keep it, put it on a flash drive, thumb drive, memory stick. or whatever else you want to call it.

Second, since you're in the US, consider purchasing a used computer, either from a computer repair facility, or from a pawn shop. I've purchased products from CashAmerica Pawn, and they give you a 30 day warranter. if the computer goes south, you can take it back, and CashAmerica will either give you a refund, or fix it. (At least they will do where I live.) A good used laptop computer can be had for $300 or less. I got mine for just under $200. It work great.)

Third, the first thing to do with a new (to you) used computer, is to come off $200, and buy a service contract from Staples. If the computer goes south after the initial 30 day warrantee is up, they'll fix it. Also, you can take it in once a year, and they'll clean it for you.

Always ask the seller about a return policy. If they on't have one, don't make the purchade.

Drawscore, I think Jay mentionned wanting a gaming PC. So forget laptops or anything in the low end range (200-300$).

Building your own PC is by far the best option.
A high performance video card ALONE will cost 200-300$.

People keep saying that, but my laptop is over five years old now and it's still fully capable of playing the latest games. Of course, it was the highest end laptop I could find at the time but it's still a laptop and handles everything perfectly fine. Only upgrade was to increase RAM to 16 gb from 8 and upgrade its processor from 2.8 GHZ to 3.1 with a simple download to improve its drivers.

People indeed keep saying that, because it's true.

You already know this, but gaming laptops are two to three times more expensive then their full-blown counterparts and require additional money to be spent on upgrades, JUST to be on par with gaming PCs. The other thing to keep in mind with laptops is that their lifespan is generally much shorter, since components and parts are much more of a hassle to fool around with and replace (unless you're tech savvy).
You need TOP money to get your expensive gaming laptop running the way a gaming computer would, PLUS you STILL have a small screen which definitely takes away the immersive aspects of many games.

Don't get me wrong, high end gaming laptops can be on par with gaming computers. You'll just have to spend a LOT more money on them and live with the fact that parts and upgrades are more expensive and more of a hassle.
The limited screen size is also an issue when you're used to playing games on big screens.

Still. my advice is reasonable and intelligent. But then, I'm an egotistical and arrogant bastard, so of course, I think all my advice is reasonable and intelligent.

Except that my laptop can be hooked up to my big-arsed 54-inch television screen. :geek:

Therefore defeating the purpose of having a compact/all-in-one computer :quirk:

I use a TV screen as my computer monitor as well.

Why can't he ask here? It's totally fine. Maybe some folks on here are technicians, or work with computers? Plus, he's going to use it to write his stories. If you can shove politics down people's throats, you can certainly ask an opinion about a computer. Personally? I'd rather have someone ask about a computer! lol

I have a HP, 8GB RAM, and it's still slow. I never had much luck with HP. Gateway/Acer were always good to me and had extremely few issues. One laptop lasted 8 years, which is a long time.

Plus, you want a laptop that has a good video/graphics card. RAM and graphics card should be "musts" to look at when purchasing a computer.

How do you figure that?! :geek: It's not like i ever take it anywhere. I just take advantage of its size to easily put it away when I'm not using it. Also, last I knew desktops have no batteries to keep the machine running in case of a sudden black out, which has happened to me a few times.

Personally I've never liked using TVs for gaming... they just don't feel right to me. My friends gaming setup involves a huge TV and I just can't focus on the game properly with it. That's just me I guess.
I'll stick to my 2 HD monitors and desktop PC thanks ;)

Still for any form of gaming I would definitely recommend a desktop over a laptop, for the same reasons stated above.

Hello Jay! This is a late post. If you're looking for a pretty good gaming computer (laptops and desktops), I'd recommend Alienware. Yes, they have all the RAM, hard drives, and such, but they also have decent graphics as well as a good processor. But if you want something well rounded, I'd highly recommend MSI. They haven't failed me yet! But, if you want something along the lines of custom, high-end, and ideal, I'd recommend Origin. Their stuff is phenomenal! Plus, it's powerful enough to help with bitcoin mining operations!
