The best thing to do, is discuss it with your "partner," and agree on all aspects. Remember, TUG stands for "Tie Up Games," and the operative word, is "Games."
Games are supposed to be fun for all involved, both captor(s) and captive(s). When it stops being fun, it starts being abuse, and that's not good.
If there is a problem, a captive must be able to communicate that fact. Therefore, the captive should be gagged in such a way, to allow that communication. Cleave gags aren't very effective, but they are "aesthetically pleasing." But to see them in use on TV or in the movies, the unknowing individual would think they are VERY effective, as the actors do little more than "mmmppfff" into them, and create that impression.
Make sure you agree on everything; do not deviate from what you have decided, and have fun.
