judgemental people

Postby robd142 » Sat Oct 24, 2015 4:33 am

What gives some people the right to judge others. I'm used to being judged by now but can't see why others do it. I was waiting in a shop queue a few days ago with my overalls on straight from the farm when the person in front of me turned round and looked me up and down in disgust. I resisted temptation to say something. It seems the don't connect us farm workers with the food they eat.

Some people simply seem to feel the need to feel superior to someone. What really gets my goat is the way people look down on workers such as dustmen who make their lives better by doing jobs they wouldn't be prepared to do themselves.

Freedom is what gives people the right to judge, but that doesn't make it the right thing to do. I always consider people who are that judgmental to be insecure. Why else would they feel the need to make someone else feel smaller other than to just prop themselves up? So if someone is judging you, take it as them showing their weakness.

I've been judged online before and I hate it. Being accused of being an "internet stalker" and shit like that.

Wow, you all seem pretty judgmental about judgmental people. :)

But seriously, I don't think insecurity is the whole answer, at least not in the sense of needing to prop themselves up and feel superior. One big source of judgmental attitudes is religion - the Big Boss in the Sky says it's an abomination, so it's not enough that they not do it - they have divine orders to stop other people from doing it too.

But even leaving that out of the mix, there are some people who just have a very narrow comfort zone, and don't like anything that's different. Sex is a big source of that - even without the religious taboo on homosexuality, some people are so unnerved by the thought of doing that (whether homosexuality or anything else unusual, including what we on this board like to do) that they don't like anyone who even causes them to think about that.

And finally, a lot of it has to do with (what they consider to be) lack of consideration. I suspect all of you on this thread have some standards of what is and isn't appropriate public behavior, and look askance at those who violate those standards - e.g., going into a restaurant smelling like someone who hasn't bathed in a week. Looking at the original example - if there was dirt on the overalls, maybe the person just has a dirt phobia, and thinks it's wrong to go into a shop in dirty clothes even though they have no problem with the occupation itself. That kind of judgmental behavior, I try not to be too judgmental about. :)

I don't think there's anyone who isn't the least bit judgmental. Or they're just lying to themselves.

Being judgemental in itself is not a bad thing at all, it's a natural human state of mind, a defense mechanism to assess potential threats, how far we take it is up to us as individuals and those people we call "judgemental" are in fact being critical, which is not okay

I'm surprised this hasn't branched out into politics yet. Especially during the current election hullaballo.
