For you Brits out there, is soccer really that big in the UK

Postby Scottstud94 » Thu Jan 22, 2015 8:11 pm

I know names like Plymouth Argyle, Conventry City, Fulham, Milwall, all of them so I'm pretty familiar with the teams, but what's the culture like over there?

"Culture" and "soccer" in the same sentence counts as an oxymoron. Besides, like the rest of the world, except for a strange sub-continent on the other side of the pond, we call it "football".

Here in France, it is quite a state religion !
Iv've never understood what people found so attractive looking at 22 retards running after a ball like puppies (not so clever or cute ones even)
But i admit that looking at 22 lovely girls in short shorts and looooong socks is quite attractive...
Now, stop the sillyness and let's talk rugby !

Or cricket...

American football is treated about the same way here. My brother is into it, and it's all he ever studies. Thankfully, there are "football atheists" I can associate with.

Now cricket, that's a game for gentlemen. One can always take one's pint on the field without too much danger of its being disturbed. If the ball hits it, though, it costs five runs.

Personally, I've always enjoyed a sport where people get beat up, or in the case of pro wrestling, simulate it, but that's just me. :P

Chloé, wouldn't it be better if those 22 girls were bound and gagged as well?

Don't apologize. The British are the ones who invented the term "soccer."

Yup (as in yes/yupie), the posh boys wanted to describe association football to discriminate between that and "rugger" or rugby fotball. The ancient upper class slang word lasted longer than it should have.

Yes it is as big as it's made out. And that's my words as an obsessive supporter.

Dude, soccer is big literally everywhere in the world. Even here in the U.S., where it takes a backseat to "handegg"(totally gonna call AF this from now on) in popularity, it's still pretty damn popular, though how popular it is varies from place to place, and popularity tends to skyrocket around World Cup season.

I've always found it odd the US, despite not being a big soccer country, has better support for women's soccer than countries that go nuts for it.

The "handegg" thing ignores the fact the various forms of football are called football because the sport is played on foot, not because a ball is kicked. It was to differentiate from sports played on horseback (like polo).
