Yah, I know it's geeky. But I love The Hollows, and wanna post a story.
I do not own Kim Harrison's work.
The thing about having a witch for a best friend, something fun is always happening.
Me? I'm a vamp. I'm 19 so far, not that my age matters much. Being high blood, I'll pretty much be stuck at whatever age I am when I die my first death.
God, I hope I die young.
Anyway, I don't really fit the whole 'vampire image'. I don't have black hair, I don't wear leather, and I'm not very broody. I'm actually very social, and have blond hair and blue eyes. I even have a tan!
My best friend Ryan was in the kitchen, working on his spells. He was kinda dark skinned, like South American. He had brown hair and moss green eyes. People always compared us to the sun and forest, depending on each other to be our best, but I didn't think that was fair to Ryan. After all, what did the forests ever do for the sun?
Ryan was an earth witch by nature, and took pride in his ingredients garden, mixing potions and amulets for daily use. However, he was taking some ley line classes to, as he said it, "broaden my horizons". Really, I think he was just tired of not having a spell ready whenever he wanted. I've developed a healthy respect for earth magic since Ryan spelled me in to a puppy one time, but it is really slow!
"Hey, Michael! Glad you're here," Ryan said.
I looked at the spot in the middle of his game room where he was working. There was counter space there, and plenty of spots with no pipes or wires. Perfect for setting a circle, he tells me.
I greeted him with a fierce hug
"Hey Ryan. Is that a spell you're working on?"
"Yup! You know how we could never play those games you like because your vamp strength makes it too easy to break the ropes?"
"Yah," I said sheepishly. I knew he really wanted to try tugs, too. It was my own stupid strength that ruined it for Ryan.
"Well, I think I have a solution," said Ryan with a wicked smile.
"Really? There's a spell for this?"
"Well, not really. But I've found this spell in class that magically reinforces certain materials. It improves the natural qualities of common items...like rope."
With those last words, he looked as cunning as a demon. I could tell he had Big plans!
"All right! So let's get started."
"Just what I was thinking, Mike."
And with that, Ryan began binding me.
