Phobias

What is your Phobia which means What is your fear?

I have a fear of bugs of any size which is bad during camping and etc. It's a silly fear, right?
You will have to subdue me to restrain me. I been a bad boy so make sure you torture me too with anything but pain.

Not all that silly. I have a fear (though I don't consider that the right word for it) of spiders and centipedes.

That would be demophobia - fear of crowds.

I don't care how beneficial most spiders are supposed to be; if I'm indoors and I see that there's one in the room with me, it dies!!! :x

I have for the most part conquered my fear of spiders by simply not allowing it to overcome me when I can help it.

Little spiders don't bother me, but I don't like those big ass camel spiders, or those big, hairy tarantulas, either.

My fear doesn't overcome me. I don't scream or shiver or anything like that. I simply grab something and swat thewm with it coolly and (almost) dispassionately. It might be more accurate to say I have a dread and hatred of spiders rather than an actual fear of them. In any case, I won't tolerate them near me indoors; outside I leave them alone.

I have that fear too; and that's probably as common as a fear of snakes (which I do NOT have) and spiders. But I feel a fear of heights only when I am in a situation where there is a realistic fear of falling - say; leaning out an open window or standing on a fire escape while at least several stories up. When inside a building or in an airplane being flown competently, I have no such problem.

during an average lifetime you will eat about 14 spiders as they crawl into your mouth when you are sleeping.

Assuming this is true, this only makes my intolerance of spiders while i am indoors all the more sensible, I think!!!.
However, I think your statistics are wrong. A lot would depend on where you are (slums or farmhouses in a third world country would likely have more spiders than an upper-class house in the US for instance).
Also, I think some of those instances are not live spiders crawling into you but might be parts found in processed meat products where the acceptable lower limit on insect parts is higher than you might think (hot dogs anyone?) Spiders crawling on me are far more likely to crawl on me, simply bite me on the skin somewhere, and simply go away again - which would explain the occasional mysterious small bruise I might find on myself when I awaken.
If a spider (even a teeny tiny one) had ever crawled into my mouth even in my sleep, i'd know it by the taste, and I doubt this has EVER happened to me. And what about ants, flies, bedbugs, fleas, ticks, and other bugs? Does you statistics include these more common pests as well? And why just the m outh? Why not up the nose or into the ears?
No, I'd have to see some proof to believe this. Thanks for the thought though - and I sure am glad I never get nightmares!!! 8)

Now that Jay has brought up the topic of phobias, and we all know what phobias are, I thought I'd throw out a related question: Has anyone on this site EVER had the phobia called "merinthophobia" during their lifetime? Or, have they ever KNOWN anyone, personally, who had, or has, merinthophobia? You all know what that phobia is, don't you? For those who don't know, or who don't want to do a search on the Internet right now, merinthophobia is the fear of being...{gasp} tied up! Just thought I'd ask...

Well, THAT video didn't say 14 spiders swallowed in a lifetime; it said 8 spiders every flipping year!!!
It also said the whole thing was apparently made up!!! Which I find more than likely!
Jeez, Viking... Did you reduce the number simply to make it less unbelieveable, or what?
Warning: anyone with a genuine fear of spiders, do NOT watch that video listed above - some pics in it will give you the screaming meemies!!!
It has close ups of spiders, and a made up scene showing a number of spiders on a sleeping person's face that are defintely not for the squeamish nor for the true arachnophobe!!!

I wasn't scared either - no mere video image can do that to me or I wouldn't be able to play Skyrim with its giant frost spiders - but some people might get nightmares watching something like that, even though I think it was meant to be amusing. It'd probably freak some people right out!

actually, i learned about it in the scouts. i never even heard about the 8 spiders a year myth before now when i saw that video.

than again true or not, i only shared it as a joke. i don't really know if it is proven (that part i did make up). but then again also notice that i said an average, so it's like you said earlier Jason Toddman it kinda depends where you live if this actually is true. saying that everyone eats 14 spiders because thats the average is like saying that everyone has the same IQ level, BMI, height or money as the average says.

if this actually where true, it still counts the average, meaning some people might eat 26 spiders (random number btw) while some others might not eat any at all, but they still are a part of the average.

sure thing. didn't mean to be a troll really  just wanted to see how people reacted.
personally i think spiders are cool creatures, so i don't find this kinda things creepy or anything.

i remember once i was at a scout trip, i shared the tent with another guy and 4-5 girls. suddenly i heard one of the girls scream, i got up from my sleeping bag to see what the noise where about. guess what, a spider.
two of the girls where literally up against the wall of the tent shouting at me to get rid of the thing. i just picked it up and let it crawl around on my fingertips as i let it out of the tent.

like i said earlier, i don't see why people are afraid of those little creatures.

Fine. Let us tie you down and make you eat eight spiders and let a hundred others crawl all over you, and then we'll see how tough you talk!
As for me; one time when i was in college I was tied down by my roommate David (a long-time TUG friend), and he and another friend of his who was also into TUGs were sitting on top of me. Suddenly his friend goes to his room and comes back in with a jar with a tarantula in it. He resumes sitting on my chest, takes the GD thing out, and holds the thing out to my face on his hand until I'm literally looking eye to eye with the %$#&@ thing. It started to move like it was going to crawl off his hand right onto my face. I went  !!!
I was so panicked I actually broke free of the ropes (which were admittedly old and a tad frayed to begin with) and knocked the guy right off of me (he wasn't very large or heavy). He was near the partially open window at the time and by a fluke the tarantula was propelled right off the top of his hand and on outdoors through it. This was fine by me although the other guy was chagrined; he apparently never found it again even though he went straight outside to look for it (we were four stories up however and it took him a while to get out there). That suited me just fine; naturally I never let *him* tie me up ever again!!!

Just getting back to my comment about "merinthophobia"---well, it's probably safe to assume that NO ONE who comes to this site has THAT phobia---probably we have the exact opposite, which might be called "merinthomania" or "merinthophilia"---two words which I no doubt just made up, in my own mind. Anyway, if you look up merinthophobia in a search, you'll find that it IS a known, bonafide fear or phobia that has been catalogued by psychological organizations, and therapies are provided for it. But, that begs another question: How would a person even develop merinthopbia? A reason that I think of could be, if a person was tied up against their will as a small, young child, and never got over the feeling or sensation of it, and they dread it to this very day. And, how would a licensed mental-health practitioner (psychiatrist or psychologist) work with a person to "get over it"? Hmmm, it does make one wonder....Anyway, back to eating my daily dose of arachnids...
