Unleashed

She walked out the door of the dojo, trying to get her denim jacket on and listen to her voice-mail at the same time. Training had been grueling that day and she was exhausted. Oh, I can’t wait to get in that shower! Now hopefully I can get out of here and get home before…
“Hey, Shyne! Wait up!” Crap. It’s not that Shyne didn’t like Z, but she didn’t want him to hold her up, she really needed that shower. She kept walking but turned her head to watch him catch up. “What’s up?”
“Not much,” Shyne replied, lowering her cell from her ear and putting it in her pocket. “Just headin’ home to take a shower.” She pulled her hair out of its ponytail, shaking out her long, blonde, still sweaty mane.
“Good, ‘cause you really stink,” Z remarked with a smirk.
“Well you would be tired and smelly too if you actually did anything! Most of the time you just stand there watching us!” She retorted, slightly annoyed.
“Hey, I just do what the instructor tells me to do. It’s not my fault all I do now is help teach.” Not that I can complain about the view… “At least you don’t have to go to black belt practice on Saturday mornings!”
“Can’t argue with that,” she smirked at him. “Well, see ya next week!” Not wanting to waste anymore time, Shyne turned into the alley, unable to see who/what was watching her from the shadows, waiting for its moment to strike. She’s the one, the one with the power…
Just a few feet from leaving the alley, Shyne felt a vibration in her pocket. She stopped and pulled out her cell phone to see who texted her. Now! Suddenly, a pair of dark hands reached out and grabbed her, one wrapping around her torso and the other firmly covering her mouth. The surprise attack caused the flip phone to fall out of her hands and come crashing to the cement, breaking in half.
“Nmmph!” My phone! This guy’s gonna pay for that! But before Shyne could react, another pair of hands grabbed her wrists and forced them behind her back, while another took hold of her ankles. How many of these guys are there?! “Lmmt mmmph gmmph!” She demanded through her captor’s hand, struggling as hard as she could. Unfortunately, the combination of the element of surprise, her fatigue, and the three strong kidnappers quickly made any attempts at escape pointless. The arm around Shyne’s torso released its grip and Shyne felt what seemed to be a flat piece of metal press against her wrists. Suddenly the metal stretched and wrapped itself around her wrists until the ends met. Surprised by her strange wrist binding, she stopped struggling, allowing her arms to be firmly pressed against her body and more of the strange metallic material wound around her above and below her breasts. The same material was used around her ankles and above and below her knees. “Hmmlph!” She cried, realizing all too late that escape was impossible without someone’s assistance.
“You might as well give up,” a cool, feminine voice said. Shyne turned her head as far as the hand over her mouth would allow, and saw a woman walk literally out of the shadows surrounding her. Her right arm was outstretched toward Shyne, and from her palm protruded several long, cylinder shaped shadows. Shyne traced the shadows with her eyes back to her own body and realized that this mysterious woman was generating the very arms that had grabbed and restrained her. “You can’t possibly escape from your bonds, so stop struggling and things will go a lot easier for both of us.”
Shyne glared at her with a mixture of rage, confusion, and fear. Who is she?! How can she do that?! And what does she want with me?! “Hmm mmrmm oo?! Wmmt dmm oo wmmnt?!”
“My name is Valkarie,” the woman replied, slowly moving closer to her helpless captive. “My master and I have come to this planet for you…and your power.” Shyne’s eyes grew wide at the woman’s words. I don’t have any power! This must be a mistake! Valkarie now stood in front of the helpless hostage, looking down at her with a sadistic smile on her face. She lowered her arm and the shadow hands disappeared, but before Shyne could try and reason with her captor or cry for help, Valkarie thrust a final piece of the metallic binding substance over her mouth.
“Nmmph!” Shyne cried in surprise, trying desperately to move away as the metal wrapped around her head, pinning her long hair down to the back of her neck. Her futile struggles caused her to lose her balance, sending her falling to the ground. “Mmmmmph!” She squealed as she came crashing down, hitting her head on the pavement. Dazed, Shyne looked up as her kidnapper just stood over her, grinning. Valkarie suddenly turned her head toward the end of the alley and Shyne faintly heard someone yelling after them. Then she saw the shadows seemingly engulf her as she faded out of consciousness…
***
“Mmmm…mmm,” she silently moaned as she awoke from her slumber. Man that was a crazy dream. I really need to stop eating junk before bed! Then she felt some sort of liquid trickle down her forehead and the side of her face. Wait, am I bleeding? She tried to reach up and rub her throbbing head, but found that she couldn’t move her arms. She opened her eyes, and what she saw startled her and she quickly realized that she was wrong: she wasn’t dreaming, and her predicament had gotten worse. Shyne still had all of her bonds from back in the alley, but now she was kneeling on a cold metal floor and was somehow being forced to bend over as well. She tried to straighten her body but immediately stopped as she felt a searing pain shot through her arms and shoulders. She started to struggle a little, discovering that her movement was much more restricted than before, not even being able to move and inch from the spot where she was kneeling.
Lifting up her head as far as she could, she saw a large, dark room with seemingly no walls other than the one she was up against, with everything else just ending in shadows. Where am I? What is this place? “Hmmmlph!” She screamed, but her gag reduced her cry to a small moan that could never be heard outside the walls of her prison. Becoming frustrated, she tried to turn and look at the material restraining her in order to devise a way of escaping. There has to be a way out of these things! Just then something caught her eye: no more than a few feet away from her was a redheaded girl who was staring at Shyne with a worried look on her face. The girl was bound the same way she was with the same metal restraints, only her hands and wrists were somehow being engulfed by the metal wall behind them. Shyne quickly determined that the same thing had been done to her, causing her to bend over not quite parallel to the floor and keeping her from straightening herself. She tugged on her arms until it felt like they were going to be pulled from their sockets, and she groaned in frustration, accepting defeat.
“Wmmt?” she mumbled to the redhead that was still staring at her. The girl’s eyes filled with tears and she lowered her head and sobbed, fearing that she and her companion were never going to get out. Wow, she’s really scared! Poor girl. Shyne tried her best to comfort her fellow captive, but the way she was bound and gagged there wasn’t much she could do but just sit there and sadly watch the girl cry.
“Well, look who’s finally awake.” Both girls looked up to see their mysterious captor standing over them, grinning. “I suppose you’ve figured out by now that those metal bands restraining you are pretty much unbreakable, making any escape very unlikely,” Valkarie chuckled lightly as she received two completely different expressions from her captives, one pleading, the other sheer hatred. “So, my little captives, I’m sure you’re wondering about me and why I’ve brought you here, right?” They nodded. “Has you have seen, my people have the ability to generate, manipulate, and control the shadows around us. However, some of us have also developed the ability to copy the powers of others, with the help of these.” She indicated the thin red points extending from her eyes. “That is where you two come in. Both of you contain tremendous power that we desire.”
“Bmmt mm dmmnt hmmph pmmwmmrs!” Shyne urged behind her gag.
“Well of course you do, you silly girl!” Valkarie knelt down and wiped some of the blood out of Shyne’s face with her fingers. “They’re just…dormant.” She gazed at the girl’s blood on her hands with calm amusement and proceeded to lick it from her fingers. This woman’s completely insane! Shyne began to realize that there would be no reasoning with her captor, gag or no gag. Suddenly Valkarie spun around as they heard what sounded like a brawl, the sounds fists and feet making contact on bodies accompanied by a man’s yells. Another yell and a figure made completely of shadows fell to the ground before them and disappeared. They looked up and saw the shadow fighter standing in front of them, with a small smirk on his face.
“Valkarie, is that the best ya got?”
O…M...G! Z! He must be the one I heard back in the alley! Wait, did I just text in my head? WTF?! Shyne could barely believe that her somewhat annoying friend from martial arts class was there rescuing her, but there he was, sweat rolling down his face and radiating confidence.
“Come on now, I’m just gettin warmed up,” Z challenged.
“How were you able to defeat all of my shadow warriors?” Valkarie asked, greatly annoyed.
“Well, I guess I’m just that awesome.” Come on Z, keep it up. Don’t let her know how tired you’re getting. Valkarie’s scowl turned into a small grin as she realized that she had the upper hand.
“It doesn’t matter how many of my warriors you beat, or how ‘awesome’ you are. You can’t stop me from taking their powers.” Summoning her powers, Valkarie created twenty more shadow warriors, standing between her captives and their would-be rescuer. Crap, me and my big mouth. I can’t take down all those guys at once! I have to stall so I can rest up a little more.
“Actually, I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Z bluffed.
“Oh, really. Why not?”
“Because, uh…since Shyne’s powers are dormant, you’ll have to awaken them, and with all the power she contains, things might get kinda destructive.” Shyne was stunned. Z’s known I’ve had powers this whole time?! Why didn’t he tell me?!
“I’m grateful for your concern, but I think I’ll take my chances. Get him!” The shadows charged after Z, and he dropped back in his stance and waited. He picked one out and when it was close enough, he slid forward and delivered a kick straight to its head. Immediately he turned and landed a punch to the next shadow. He continued to fight them off, never wasting more than a single strike on one before turning to the next one, but he was outnumbered. Soon the numbers caught up to him, and he was struck with a kick to the stomach. The wind knocked out of him, Z was felled by a shadowy fist to the side of his face. The shadows continued to pummel him without mercy while he writhed on the floor, trying to defend against the vicious onslaught.
“Nmmph! Stmmp!” Shyne pleaded. She struggled and pulled with all her might to try and help her beaten and bloodied friend, but with the way she was restrained she could barely move an inch.
“Enough!” Valkarie commanded, and the shadows stopped, awaiting their orders. “Hold him up, I want him to see this!” They pulled Z to his knees and lifted his head to make sure he saw what was to come. Blood was streaming from his nose, and there were gashes, cuts, and bruises all over his face. Satisfied, Valkarie turned back to her captives. She knelt down in front of Shyne and held her head up by her chin.
“Lmmt gmm ov mmph!” Shyne tried to turn her head away, but Valkarie’s grip held firm. Valkarie stared into Shyne’s eyes and the red points coming from her eyes started to glow.
“No! Get away from her!” Z yelled, but it was too late. Shyne’s eyes were locked on Valkarie’s, and red beams of light shot from the tips of the glowing points, penetrating Shyne’s pupils. Valkarie grinned as she felt victory come into her grasp.
Suddenly, Shyne’s eyes turned bright gold and light started shining through them. She started glowing, and Valkarie was blown as Shyne’s powers were unleashed. The metal bands entrapping her shattered and she rose to her feet. She raised a hand towards the shadows holding up Z, and a blast of bright light shot forward, wiping the shadows out of existence. Squinting, Z had to lift an arm in front of his eyes and turn his head away as he slowly got to his feet.
“Uh…Shyne? Could you back it down a little? You’re blindin me here.” She didn’t respond, just stood there staring at him with her bright yellow eyes, her skin literally radiating bright light.
“Oh that’s it, girlie!” Valkarie cried, struggling to see past the blinding light coming from her former captive. “I was being nice before, but now I’ll have to take your power by force!” Shyne snapped her head around and glared at her would-be captor. Suddenly multiple bands of light wrapped around Valkarie, entrapping her legs and pinning her arms to her body. Shyne then lifted her hand upward, and Valkarie was thrust high into the air above them.
“Release me now! Or I swear you will regret MMPH!” Valkarie’s threat was cut off by another beam of light wrapped over her mouth and around her head. She thrashed around violently, but Shyne’s bands of light held firm, reversing the roles of captor and captive.
“Hmm! Cmm oo hmmlp mm owmmt?” the redheaded girl asked when she saw the tables had turned. Z rushed over and pulled her bonds off of her. “Thanks, but I thought they were unbreakable.”
“Only to the person their holding,” Z explained as he helped her up. “Otherwise they’re pretty flexible.” They walked over to Shyne, and Z put his hand on her shoulder. “C’mon, Shyne. Let’s get out of here.” She nodded, closed her eyes, and in a bright flash of light they vanished, leaving Valkarie to fall hard to the floor, still bound and gagged.

Back in the alley, the victors stood and all was explained. “Wow that was incredible!” Shyne exclaimed, not back to normal. “My mind just went blank and it was like I was controlled by pure instinct! I can’t believe I have so much power! Z, how did you know that would happen?”
“Actually, I didn’t,” he chuckled. “I was just bluffing. I didn’t even know you had any powers, to tell you the truth.”
“Well, then how did you get there?”
“I jumped in just as Valkarie teleported you guys, then she sicked some of her warriors on me while she dragged you away.”
“But you seemed to know so much about what was going on! How?” The redheaded girl blushed, embarrassed when the other two stared at her, surprised that she actually spoke.
“That’s ‘cause I’ve dealt with her before. She actually thought I had powers a few years ago, but, sadly, I don’t.”
“What happened?”
“Her little power stealer beams almost killed me. Let me tell ya somethin: dyin sucks.”
“Well that explains pretty much everything,” Shyne declared, then turned to the redhead. “Except, who are you?”
“I’m…uh…my name is…um…Charm,” she replied shyly. “And I…have powers, too.”
“Really? What can you do?”
“I can…uh…conjure any object I want, pretty much at will.” The other two stared at her, rather impressed, while she timidly looked away, embarrassed by all the attention.
“Well, Charm,” Z finally said. “Welcome to the team. Now all we need to do is help you guys figure out how to control your powers.”
“Sweet! I wanna see what I can do!” Shyne enthused, anxious to learn more about her newly discovered gifts…
***
“You have failed me, Valkarie.”
“Ymms, mmmstmmr.”
“As punishment, I am leaving you in your current position until I decide to give you another chance to redeem yourself. You better not fail again, your punishment will be far worse, understood?”
“Ymms, mmmstmmr.”

The end?
