did you know that

Each day, 1 in 4 Americans visits a fast food restaurant

In 1972, we spent 3 billion a year on fast food - today we spend more than $110 billion

McDonald's feeds more than 46 million people a day - more than the entire population of Spain

French fries are the most eaten vegetable in America

You would have to walk for seven hours straight to burn off a Super Sized Coke, fry and Big Mac

In the U.S., we eat more than 1,000,000 animals an hour

60 percent of all Americans are either overweight or obese

One in every three children born in the year 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime

Left unabated, obesity will surpass smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in America

Obesity has been linked to: Hypertension, Coronary Heart Disease, Adult Onset Diabetes, Stroke, Gall Bladder Disease, Osteoarthritis, Sleep Apnea, Respiratory Problems, Endometrial, Breast, Prostate and Colon Cancers, Dyslipidemia, steatohepatitis, insulin resistance, breathlessness, Asthma, Hyperuricaemia, reproductive hormone abnormalities, polycystic ovarian syndrome, impaired fertility and lower back pain

Only seven items on McDonald's entire menu contain no sugar

Willard Scott was the first Ronald McDonald - he was fired for being too fat

McDonald's distributes more toys per year than Toys-R-Us

Diabetes will cut 17-27 years off your life

McDonald's: "Any processing our foods undergo make them more dangerous than unprocessed foods"

The World Health Organization has declared obesity a global epidemic

McDonald's calls people who eat a lot of their food "heavy users"

McDonald's operates more than 30,000 restaurants in more then 100 countries on 6 continents

Before most children can speak they can recognize McDonald's

Surgeon General David Satcher: "Fast food is a major contributor to the obesity epidemic"

Most nutritionists recommend not eating fast food more than once a month

40 percent of American meals are eaten outside the home

McDonald's represents 43% of total U.S. fast food market

if these facts are true, and they were proved in Super Size Me, than something is wrong. Mc donalds is taking advantage of kid's weak minds to get them addicted at a young age to fast food. ADDICTED!!!!

they are the largest toy producer in the world!

I mean, also, the food is junk! the salad even has sugar in the lettuce and even mc donalds said themselves in a court case that their foods are DANGEROUS!!!

you cannot deny what is happening, super sized fries for your thoughts?

Parents could do a lot to make this situation better. But it's un-American to take personal responsibility these days so let's instead blame McDonald's, and maybe violent movies and Fox News while we're at it. Not that I think they're totally without blame, after all they are making the product, but they're forcing you to buy their products.

I eat at McDonald's maybe once every 3-4 weeks myself, fast food maybe 1-2 times a week on average. I know what I'm getting myself into when I buy it and I'm not blaming McDonald's for it.

Some of the stats are pretty sad though, particularly the first one and the one about fries being the most eaten vegetables in the US.

America is probably one of the worst countries when it comes to fast food joints and how many people actually consume it!
I have watched documentaries about the USA, especially about the children. The parents just don't seem to give a toss about what their children eat, and it is dreadfully sad. It's shameful really that the parents are willing to put all that junk down there throats... leading to health problems later in life.
I have seen it here in the UK as well, mum's always in McDonald's and other fast food joints like KFC and the chip shop. It's upsetting to see such a thing happen. It should not be allowed. Yes a fast food outing once a week is good... but everyday or majority of the week, its just not right... you have to balance it out, and eat healthy food as well!

I myself do not tend to eat junk foods, its only on the rare occasions like for a friend's get together that I actually eat from fast food joints. Its just full of stuff your body does not want.

The facts above are startling, and I think the US should do more for their children, and their adults. Its seem many adults over there (from what I have read/seen) are either overweight or obese. Its not right, and sets a bad example for younger generations, and generations to come.

Personally I agree to put the blame on the parents. They are the ones who buy their kids the fast food at a young age and just get used to it. It isn't hard to cook a healthy meal especially with all of the perks we have today. I agree we don't want to blame ourselves so we blame the big company "forcing" us to supersize everything. Personally I don't eat at mc donalds ever but that is just because I have the much more delicious in-in-out. :)

I haven't eaten at any fast food restruant except subway and few pizza places ever since I read Fast Food Nation...

The dye for orange soda comes from a pigment produced by bugs, they dry them out and grind them up for the coloring.
More Children ages 6-12 recognize recognize an image of Ronald Mcdonald than do an image of Jesus or the president.
90% of most American's vegetable intake comes from potatoes.
In 2003 Mcdonalds suggested irradiating their ground beef to sanitize it due to poor conditions in the feedlots.
...theres a bunch more but I'm too lazy to go dig out the book at the moment.

Blah blah blah, the gene pool needs more chlorine anyway. In my opinion it's like smoking or drugs, if people are too stupid/lack the willpower to take care of themselves then let them get themselves outa here faster. (Excuse the harshness, I just got home from being around some of the biggest idiots in existence at my work.)

I'm for getting the facts out there about what's in this stuff. Beyond that it's up to people whether or not they want to eat it, or parents if their kids aren't old enough to make their own decisions. I don't see the harm in a Happy Meal or Big Mac once in a while, but if you're eating them on a very regular basis it's on you.

Boundgal mentions something that often isn't mentioned. A lot of kids are overweight here because parents are and their eating habits get passed down.

I don't think there's anything specifically wrong with McDonalds. Yes, making that stuff on your own might get you slimmer results, but when you're eating ground meat on white bread with mayo, a side of fried potatoes and a sweetened beverage you should be aware that it isn't exactly slimming. If you're watching your weight or you know you're prone to fattening, just learn to control yourself better. There's no reason for them to make their regular dishes more dietetic. Usually with industrial food that ends up in loss of flavor, and many customers won't take that (me included). Just like you don't blame people being out of shape on public transportation and prompt buses to be pedal powered, don't blame obesity on fast food. It's all about self control.

Some people will have 'for' and 'against' issues on the wonderful world of junk food - fast food let outs! People go on saying that such things like subway are healthy, well I can safely say they really are not... the amount of 'hidden' junk that goes into their foods is astonishing!
I have nothing against McDonalds itself but some people just take it too far, and literally should move into the place.
Some people enjoy there McDonalds a little too much, and 'overindulge' in such things. It really depends on what you have... and depends what country you are from as menu's differentiate around the globe.

If you have a 'balanced' diet, where you have 1 to 2 treats a week, then you are in good form, eating healthy is something many people don't do... and as I have said in my other post, will cost their lives later on in life, they will lead to serious health problems, and it also sets a bad example for younger generations! I actually despise mother's who take their little children for a McDonalds for dinner nearly every week... its usually the younger mother's! I would never allow my children (when I have children) to be eating junk food, its just something I will not allow to happen, yes they will have the occasional treat of sweets and the like... but I wont be ramming junk food down them constantly they will eat proper food.

People need to understand the damage junk food does to them... yes you may say oh I'm only a little fat... but that fat... especially around the middle area (belly) is sitting on all of your vital organs. Its just not nice to think about it!

Diabetics is a serious issue for some Britain's! Its a fact... but what can be done, there are adverts out there, free services but no one seems to take them up! Its your own responsibility to look after yourself! Always go by this saying 'If you don't have respect for yourself, no one else will'.

the salads have sugar, the apple dippers come with carmel sauce, the yogurt has the same amount of calories as the fries, and there is only one low fat salad dressing.
