PM Q - Paranoid ?

Postby Opinionated » Fri Nov 12, 2010 9:28 am

Hello, the day after an outgoing pm sat in my outbox, I deleted it, within as little as 24 hours. Is it probable it went through / was received? I did it for stupid efficinecy, like as if my inbox + outbox were full (guess that goes back to my training in acctg / bookkeeping). Thanks for your help.

If it was in your outbox rather than under sent messages, it was never received. Whoever it was sent to will know you sent a message but deleted it later however whenever they get around to checing their inbox. This has been MY experience anyway. Don't know why'd you'd need to clear your outbox; once a message is received, it goes from outbox to Sent Box anyway.
The only reason to bother clearing stuff from your in or out boxes is if you wish to keep any mail. Otherwise older messages get deleted when the box is filled anyway; you keep the most recent 100 and out the rest go. If you wish to keep anything, you should clear the deadwood; otherwise there's no need to as far as I can tell.

From my understanding A message well sit in the out-box tell the person you are sending to logs in the the site. If they are already on the site then they well get it when they refresh/change topic. So what this means if the person do not have any site activity/visits for a day the massage well stay in your out-box for that day or longer tell they return. Some one correct me if I'm wrong.

Anjell is perfectly correct. This is exactly what happens.
Sometimes a message to a person will stay in the outbox for days or even weeks if they don't check and read their PMs or visit the site often.

One quick way you can tell whether a message you sent has been received: try to edit it. Hit the edit button and make a little inconsequential change like adding your initial at the end of the letter; then hit submit. If it works, your message hasn't been received yet. Otherwise the edit will fail and a message will tell you the letter cannot be edited because it had already been read. Now you know!!!
