Short Halloween story

Back in my freshman year, some of my floor mates and I decided to volunteer to help pass out candy to kids at a nearby elementary school near our campus. Also, there was a contest between the floors in our residence building to see who could come up with the scariest floor, best decorated floor, and some other award that I forget; all of which were decided by the kids.

Our idea was to come up with a scary Egyptian temple theme for our floor. We decorated our floor with cobwebs, bats that we cut out of black construction paper, and some black spider toy thingies. As for our costumes, some of the girls on our floor decided to put on some toga-like dresses to look like priestesses and a couple of the boys had decided to dress up as pharaohs. Others (including myself) decided to go the conventional route and dress up as mummies using tons of rolls of toiler paper. But, the real clever ones were these two girls who came up with the idea of cocooning themselves in front of the elevator to scare the kids once they got off.

So, some of the guys on the floor and I hoisted these two up onto the walls and used up two rolls of duct tape to stick them on. The other girls on the floor also added on some black eye makeup to make their faces creepy-looking. Taking the idea a bit further, we took one of the guys and completely mummified him (leaving some holes for his nose and mouth of course) and left him lying in the middle of our floor. His role was to "rise" up off the floor to unsuspecting kids. Once all the preparations were ready and we were notified that the kids would soon be making their rounds to each of the floors, we turned out most of the lights on our floor and took our positions.

I must say, it was pretty fun to hear the kids' screams from down the hallway as they came out of the elevators. And when the kids came to knock on each of our doors for candy, they seemed to be creeped out and impressed with our costumes and decorations. For the last group of kids, John (the guy we had completely mummified) seemed to grow tired of laying all wrapped up in toilet paper and just got up and ripped it all off, causing the loudest screams of all the kids. I felt like we had "Scariest Floor" in the bag.

Unfortunately, there was another floor that had won out that award, but overall, it was a fun experience nonetheless.
