Some of you may remember a club fire in Rhode Island a few years ago... TONS of people packed in to see a band called Great White. The place was WAY over capacity. Pyrotechnics that were part of the show ignited a fire that killd roughly 100 people. It was awful. These club owners need to be liable for the decisions that they make. They pack people in like livestock (of leagal age or otherwise) on big draw nights in order to stuff their pockets, with little or no regard for safety.

I hope fellow members here will forgive me as I expound for a minute about this extremely important subject which has absolutely nothing to do with TUGS. The fire which Snobound mentions, in the previous message, occurred in February, 2003. It is known as the "Station Nightclub Fire" in West Warwick, R.I., and if you Google that you may see horrible videos and news stories about the disaster.

Rhode Island is a small, tight knit state where everyone seems to know, at least second or third hand, everybody else in the area. Really! I live in Warwick, very close by. I personally know a woman who lost her niece in the fire. Her body was not identified for five days. A 22 year old boy neighbor of mine managed to escape-- barely able to breath as he was pushed thru the front doorway. I know a young woman who was buried beneath bodies stacked above her at the exit -- those whose dead bodies partly shielded her from death until she was finally pulled free. She was among 200 injured transported to hospitals in ambulances. Every available rescue unit in the cities of Warwick, West Warwick, Coventry, North Kingstown, Cranston and Johnston, R.I., were needed. She had eight surgeries and skin graphs to repair burn damage over the four years following the fire. For 100 mostly young adults out for an evening of music and fun luck ran out at 11 p.m. that night. They died.

There is a well staffed, fully equipped fire station located just 2,000 feet up the hill from the site -- and they were on scene within four minutes of the alarm, but there was little they could do.

So, my friends, when you enter ANY assemblage of people take a minute to study the escape routes or exits in case of the unexpected happening. Don't trust that the route you used upon entering will be available if you must leave quickly. Be aware of an alternate means of escape!

If you see a place filled to overcapacity, or with exits blocked or chained shut, as was the case at Station, GET OUT and call the fire department and police department immediately and identify yourself, and tell them that you want a responder there immediately. Don't let innocent patrons be killed because of senseless actions.

Damn... it was that long ago. It doesn't seem it. I mentioned the fire because a friend of the family's was killed in that fiasco. I think she was 24. The fire burned so hot and so intense that it was nearly impossible to identify some remains. I'm nauseated just thinking about it. Each of those deaths was needless. I spend a lot of time in RI, and know that the wounds from this disaster are still very fresh.... maybe that's why it doesn't seem so long ago.

There's a very popular bar here in Killington, VT that I worry about. Some of you may have been skiing in Killington, and may know it... it's called the Pickle Barrel (No- it's NOT a gay bar!). You wouldn't know it from looking at the exterior, but 500 people can be easily packed into the place on a busy night. It's two floors, multiple bars, and two stages..... with TWO inadequate exits. They have great live music, but I don't enjoy myself while I'm there. I worry too much about just the sort of thing that happened at the Station. I can't think of a worse way to go than being burned alive.
