The Show Must Go On!

Brandon scrambled with his phone to check a text as he was driving over to school, brushing hair out of his eyes at the same time.

Amy: Good luck w/ the tree, should look awesome :) Also, see if Sharon is there, I don’t think she’s sick or anything.

It was his first time doing any sort of theatre art, and Brandon Arlyle sure had his work cut out for him. Perryman High was putting on the biggest musical the school AND town had ever seen and naturally, he was chosen by the drama club to design and paint the key set pieces. Canvases, sketches...even pottery, Brandon had a true talent for the arts and the whole school knew. But painting 15 foot palm trees and streetlight cutouts out of fiberboard was a different story entirely.

He was on his way to grab some finishing paints he had kept in the theatre costume closet, and chewed his nails thinking about how he could get two more pieces done in under two days. Sleep? An artist never sleeps!

Parking immediately outside of one of the school loading docks, Brandon ran up the back steps behind the theatre, then BACK to his car to turn off his lights and back up the steps to the back entrance. He seriously needed to relax.

The overhead and sidewall lights were low and dim, creating a haunted atmosphere in Perryman High’s little theatre. However, the show was to go on at the community center for performing arts as the expected turnout was supposed to number in the hundreds. Many talented kids were taking part and acting in Break A Leg, Lucky! a musical about the business of beauty pageants and live shows in 1960’s Las Vegas. Most of the cast and crew were rehearsing downtown for the final days before the performance...everyone except for Brandon.

A quick walk behind stage-left led to the little theatre offices, storage rooms and costume supply. Walking into costume supply always made Brandon sneeze and sniffle as the jungle of old curtains, clothes, robes, and costume accessories released waves of dusty fibers all throughout the space. Garments of every hue and fiber jutted from hangers and boxes and trunks, all in disarray from designers coming and going to augment available clothing as the dingy lights whined overheard.

Looking up and with mouth agape, Brandon felt the first sneeze coming on as he clenched his eyes-

“AAAAAGGGGHHHHCHHYYYYYEEEOOOOOO!!!!”

“HULOMPH!?!?”...from some corner of the room was what he got in response.

“Hello???” Brandon whipped his head about and narrowed his gaze.

“Bleehinth thuh murrurmph!!!” came the voice.

“What? Who’s in here?”

“BLEEEEHHIIINDTH. THUH. MIRRUUHMPH.,” the voice said a little louder this time with a touch of annoyance.

What accent is that? Brandon thought, as he walked to a grand yet weathered old mirror propped in front of a sewing bench.

As he heaved it aside on its wheels and revealed what was behind, he got out his phone with trembling hands and finally texted Amy back.

Brandon: Found her.

The girl bounced her heeled toes up-and-down frantically and stretched her neck out to Brandon.

He put his still-quaking hand on the gag in her mouth and pulled it down, his fingertips damp from the cloth.

“Uhmmm... Tah Dah!”

Sharon Tilly sat bound and nearly naked in a bright red string bikini that was entirely too small for a girl her stature. She was a fairly popular senior at Perryman High and one of the leads for the musical; the villainous beauty pageant queen Patty Pratcher. In reality, Sharon’s true personality was playfully eccentric and bubbly, and she could transform her manner for just about any character. In any case she was a looker, taller than most as well, and her thick dirty blonde hair and heavy eyeshadow made her a different creature altogether. Cute as ever, just, sultry and cunning now, like a woman who knew how to handle herself in show business.

She sat in obvious discomfort, bound with wide cords of heavy duty stage rope, in frantic but effective knotwork which kept her ankles, knees and thighs locked and arms and wrists completely immobile.

She brushed Brandon with her raised golden and sparkling high heeled shoes and gave a cute shrug.

“Well...Janice finally snapped.”

“What the hell?” Brandon tried his best to only look at her face.

Sharon poured the explanation forth in a word waterfall and bobbed her head as she spoke in a sing-song cadence: “Well, I got home today, and wanted to go over the 2nd number for the 44th time, before rehearsal tonight, and got into character, so I put on the bikini in my room, and when I put it on, it was OBVIOUSLY the wrong size, and figured I mixed it up, AGAIN, and so I rushed here STILL in costume, and I thought no one was here too, and then out of nowhere, I got tackled to the ground, and it was Janice on top of me, and SHE THREATENED ME BRANDON! SHE THREATENED TO SMEAR MY MAKEUP IF I STRUGGLED!!! I SPENT, like, FOREVER ON POWDERING AND...”

Brandon shot a hand forward, covering her mouth and Sharon’s eyes bugged in a squeal of surprise. He put the palm to his face while at the same time, strangely wishing he could keep it there... “Sharon. Just tell me why she did this to you.”

Sharon raised a single eyebrow and tilted her head. “Uhhh, she’s my understudy, DUH. Probably some, like, batshit insane plan to get my role if I didn’t show up to the main rehearsal tonight. Like Ms. Maynerd would have that happen! Jan has ZERO business singing, even if she does do a solid dance routine...”

“Let me get you undone so you can make it to rehearsal, I’ve...got a lot of...work to do too...” Brandon gulped as he ogled Sharon’s cleavage and the soft exposed skin of her hips. He ran into Sharon a lot lately these last few months of his senior year, what with the work to be done for the musical, and had always found her peppy personality and expressive features a complete turn-on. But seeing her in this wild state set his heart pounding.

As he stooped to untie the damsel’s ankles, Sharon screeched “Behind you!” The last thing Brandon remembered was a gloved hand over his face and a sickly sweet scent overwhelming him as he tried bucking his body in defiance, his vision going fuzzy and grey until he was out like a spotlight.

Brandon groggily came to his senses in what he thought was a fever dream of panic and exhaustion from his work for Break A Leg, but a few worried jerks and grunts later, realized he indeed suffered the same fate as his classmate. He shuttered his eyes, still in a slight daze from the chloroform Janice must have used in quiet ambush, and was greeted to a squirming Sharon Tilly seated at his side, nudging her shoulders on his own to rouse him from his slumber.

“Gud tuh sthee yur uhwakth.” Sharon tried her very best to speak with Brandon, despite the tight scarf again biting deep into her cherry-red lips and rouge cheeks. “Leth sthee uf yu cun unthigh theeth opes,” Sharon mouthed carefully, sucking back spit as she finished the sentence. She managed a grin with the gag still wedged in place and Brandon believed in that moment she must have been the most optimistic kidnapee ever to be tied.

“Behdur ayydeeah. Gut mah phun.” Brandon gestured to his right pocket with his head and Sharon caught on, nodding hers in turn. She scooched forward on the bench and tried to stand, failing a couple times to Brandon’s delight as her bust jiggled in her beauty queen top. He watched her rise slowly as her heels clicked upon the hardwood, carefully observing her long stomach and legs. How in the world did outfits like this get approved for a high school musical anyway? Brandon wondered.

She wasted no time backing up to him as he inched forward on the bench, his ropes growing more itchy and bothersome by the second. Her fingers clawed for his front right pocket and Brandon couldn’t help himself now as his skin flushed hot and mind ran away with his sensibilities. Her free fingers fished about and clasped his cell phone as Brandon stared at her bare back and lovely half exposed posterior.

“Code isth theventeenthurtyfife”.

“Gotyuh”, Sharon mumbled as she gave a little wiggle of her thumb in confirmation. But try as she might, she kept misdialing and struggled to hit the right buttons as Brandon hopped to her side and grasped his phone from her hands. He tapped in the code without looking and unlocked his device to immediately dial Amy Vanden, his friend and one of the chorus girls in the show.

Brandon looked Sharon in the eyes and said “Gut hulp”. Standing with bent knees, Sharon dipped low at the waist and put her head to the phone in discomfort, trying to balance on her ridiculous showgirl heels while concentrating on Amy’s hopeful reply. Brandon had his arms and back to Sharon now but could feel lovely warm air shooting from her nostrils onto his hand. The dial-tone finally stopped.

Amy: How did it go? Are you guys on your way?

Sharon: ITH MEEE! WURE TIETH UHPPH! MMMMPPPHH!!!

Amy: Brandon? How many bars do you have, you’re breaking up.

Sharon: HULP USTH! PLEEEETH! WUR ATH THUH THKOOL!

Amy: What? Just text me, I have no idea what you’re saying

Sharon: NOOOOMMMPPH!

The phone was worth the effort, as his next idea was dangerous. Brandon set his eyes upon the mirror now a few paces by the bench and fell down on his legs before turning over in a seated position upon the ground. Sharon watched puzzled as she stood still and straight now, the ropes accenting her skin and adding a pleasant touch to her hourglass figure. Brandon had another glance at her, half embarrassed by his situation but half proud, as he was actually doing something to get out of their captivity. Sharon looked beautiful, actually, and had really taken all of this like a champ. Her smoky eyes filled with determination and she gave her nose a wrinkle as she carefully sat back on the bench studying his next move.

WIth one solid kick, he connected with the mirror back and caused it to topple on its face, shattering upon the floor in a titanic crash as shards and fragments of polished glass coated the room.

“Beh garefulmph!” Sharon tried shouting as she gave an awkward clapping motion with her fingers reaching from her side.

He wasted no time clambering for a large shard and set the jagged edge on a coil of rope above his wrists, sawing back and forth with care. After five minutes, the rope became frayed and he snapped the coil by pulling his hands apart. He shimmied out of the ropes around his arms as he untied the other coils before he ripped the bandana from his face in a final act of freedom.

He stood up amongst the ruined mirror pieces and rubbed his hands and ankles. “And I thought artists were crazy” Brandon sighed.

Sharon giddily bounced on the bench and turned her body from him in a gesture to have her wrists untied.

“Sharon, we need evidence that Janice did this to you and you weren’t just making up a wild story for your absence.”

Sharon whipped her head around. “Oomph ayy sthee. Muk ith quith, muh ists urr numph.”

Almost dropping his phone in excitement, Brandon centered the little lens on Sharon.

“Can you look scared out of your mind?”

In an instant, Sharon faced the camera head on and leaned in as close as she could, wrinkling her face in pure fear, eyes narrowed and lips quivering around the white cloth. “HUUULLLMMMPPPHHH!”

“Got it!”

He immediately set to work on the leading ladies’ ropes, relishing in the glory of saving the girl while delicately touching her soft legs and arms.

Sharon shook the remaining ropes from her body and stood up while she removed her gag.

“Ya know, I would actually take a role like this if the gag didn’t have to be tied INSIDE my mouth.” She gave Brandon a tiny smile before pausing, Brandon sensing something. In a rush, she stooped a little on her heels and kissed him deeply.

“Thank you. I really don’t know how long I would be here if you hadn’t come. I had NO IDEA that Janice was still lurking about, I wonder how she kn...”

At that moment he was in love, and nearly forgot to respond with anything. He finally came to and said “Go get your costume and get out of here! I’ll see you tomorrow but you’ve got a show to steal back. I’ll send the picture right now, just have to grab some things for the set tonight.”

Sharon smiled wide and winked as she hummed one of her tunes, grabbing an old show robe to throw about her on the way out of costume supply and to her car.

Brandon stood alone again and knew he had to get one more thing checked off his list before the show this weekend:

A dozen roses.
