Boehner: Dems plan to import terrorists, into America.

Postby zanev » Wed Jun 10, 2009 12:11 am

House Minority Leader John Boehner isn't mincing words at news that a Gitmo detainee is set to face a criminal trial after being transferred to Manhattan this morning.

"This is the first step in the Democrats’ plan to import terrorists into America," Boehner said. "Without a plan to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, the Administration has made the decision to begin transferring these terrorists into the United States, in spite of the overwhelming opposition of the American people and serious questions from Members of Congress of both parties."

To be sure, the particular Guantanamo detainee the feds chose to bring to trial, Ahmed Ghailani, is a suspect with a large amount of evidence against him. He's a Tanzanian who was once Osama bin Laden's bodyguard, the the charges he faces are related to the 1998 embassy bombings in Tanzania, which killed 224 people.

But Republicans suspect Ghailani will be the first of many Gitmo detainees brought to the U.S. for criminal trial, despite serious opposition from Republicans and Democrats in Congress for permanent relocation of detainees on U.S. soil.

"There are more than 200 of the world’s most dangerous men held at the Guantanamo Bay prison," Boehner said. "Does the Administration plan to transfer all of them into our nation in this way? Do they plan to give them the same legal rights as the American people? Just what is the Administration’s plan for closing this prison?"

Heres the thing, once they touch US soil they are entitled to every right Americans have as if they were arrested. They SHOULD get a fair trial...but I don't like the idea of a Religious Jihadist escaping from a US jail OR converting people in jail into jihadist who will then later get out and cause havoc. I'm sure every other nation shares that last concern.

amandalu wrote:the UK imprisoned IRA terrorists in their own prisons for years and no British MP complained about them. And you define them as if they are all terrorists. Some of them are simply innocent victims captured by Bush & Cheney for show. Amazing the Republicans have no problem with US radicals in their backyard and then want to whine and bitch about so called terrorists. Not that human rights should be accorded to all, but what do the Republicans plan to do otherwise? Keep Guantanamo and keep torturing?

I'm not implying all are terrorist. But radical islam is transferred through the prison system.

amandalu wrote:Radical islam is no different from the Spanish terrorists, the German Red Brigade, and tons of othr terrorists once held in prisons. And they did not say they will hold them in normal lock up jails. Besides, whether Guantanamo or America, America will still face Islamic terrorism if they don't tackle the heart of the problem. Republicans lost and they still don't want to say sorry. Even the Tories in the UK are more refined than the right wingers.

I'm not right wing but I dont want these people in our prison system. I admit, I dont want them to have the same rights we have, and once they touch our ground they need those rights.

Human rights declaration:
--------
Article 10
Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.
Article 11
1. Everyone charged with a penal offence has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defence.
-------------

The consequences to me are clear: the inhabitants should face a fair trial.
If some of them are indeed criminal terrorist, chances are they will be prosecured. And the innocent ones will most likely get free.

As long as they are prohibited a fair trail, the US is destroying the very virtues it tries to defend. And it looses it's point: even if let's say 500 dangerous terrorists (I just made up that number, it has no fact base) are kept secure in that prison, 5000 more will grow because of the denial of human rights to those 500. So, the (felt) increase in safety is factual a decrease.

Or, to put it into the words of one of the great thinkers of the past: "It is better to risk saving a guilty man than to condemn an innocent one" (Voltaire ).

I heard on the news Saudi Arabia is thinking taking 100 of them right now, we're close to getting people out of there.

Ideally, they should all receive fair trials. However we live in a world incited by fear, if their are no terrorists, then the government will be fabricating them. Heavy legislation is passed through complete pathos appeal, there is very little logic remaining in politics or american justice. I guess we're gonna have to accept the fact that these people will be denied a fair trial, that they will be labeled as dangers to humanity while murderers in our federal court system get off on technicalities, and kill again. The downside to being the constable of the world is the making of immoral choices.

I have to agree with him on one thing. There hasn't been much of a real plan in all of this. I'm all for closing the detention center at Guantanomo, but not if we don't have a plan for what to do with the prisoners afterward. I'd rather keep it open in that case.

Ideally everyone would get a trial. If they're guilty, let's find them guilty of terrorism. Then I have no problems with locking them up for the rest of their lives. But I don't like the idea the government can say someone is a terrorist and keep them locked up forever. How long will it be before we do that to Americans on American soil?
