Will the Boston Marathon Bomber be Executed?

Postby Lake Lover » Thu Apr 09, 2015 6:21 pm

The Marathon Bomber was found guilty on all 30 counts. Now, the jury only has to carry the death penalty on one of the 17 counts on which death may be imposed. Is there any member here who would not vote to enforce the death penalty for this crime? It only takes one juror to make the penalty life in prison.

It might be fitting to narrow the finish line gate wide enough to stretch his body across and use it for the next Boston marathon. That way every runner gets a chance to stomp or spare. i wonder how he'd make out.....

I have mixed feelings. One part of me says "Fry his ass." Another part says that if we do execute him, he will become hero and a martyr to other jihadists.

It might be just as well to bury him at the Super Max prison in Colorado, which I hear, is 600 feet under ground. He'd never again see the light of day, but then again, for the deaths and injuries he caused, death is an apt punishment. Perhaps put him in Super Max, and make him share a cell with a pig. Or maybe with a 325 pound gang member named "Bubba." He'll wish he had been executed.

As for his 72 virgins (when and if he gets them), may they all look like Helen Thomas, Hillary Clinton, and Nancy Pelosi.

I say we let him live, let's show him that we will not stoop to the level of killing him and send him to life in prison. Let him know we are better than that.

Nothing of value will be lost to this world by executing him so I'd say they should do so.

The brutal crime he did, deserves the death penalty, but having said that, it would seem more like revenge.

Better to put him in prison for life, solitary confinement, no TV, no radio, no visitors, and basic food.

I don't support the death penalty for anything. Maybe I'm being naive, but I don't think there's room in an enlightened (or on-the-way-to-becoming-enlightened) society for capital punishment.

Whatever you think of Drawscore's opinions, I thought it was pretty much common knowledge Muslims consider pigs to be unclean.

Normally I'd say Tsarnaev (spelling close enough for me, too lazy to look it up) be put on death row and just sit there for 40 years and never actually get executed, but considering the actions he's responsible for, I think he'll actually get put to death. I'm not a big supporter of the death penalty but this is one of the crimes I won't get upset over it being used for. But I kind of hope they keep him alive in prison so he has to live with it.

No more so than Jews or Christians do (those that pay attention to all of Leviticus as opposed to the "see, says right here God hates gays" readers anyway). The notion that "contact with a pig or pork product in any way, whether against your will or not = a one way ticket to hell" is a common Muslim belief is a childish invention of bigots who prefer to think in caricature.

At the cost of housing him (right now avg $40,000/year) and he should last close to another 60 years,

Most Muslims (and Jews) do minimize contact with pigs because of the idea they're unclean. I don't think it would be the horrifying ordeal for one Drawscore thinks (beyond the fact a pig probably wouldn't be very comfortable to share a cell with). I don't know why pigs get singled out either, considering there are a lot of animals considered unclean in Leviticus, such as dogs, which are much more commonly met by the average person.

Uncleanness doesn't mean much to Christians because of changes noted in Acts, which, incidentally, manage to get conveniently "overlooked" by some of the same people who love to point out the people who pick and choose certain verses.

In any case, Drawscore can come up with all the crazy ideas he wants, but I'm sure there are at least a half dozen laws and statutes that would be violated by putting any animal in a cell with a prisoner.

It's actually more expensive to execute someone than to keep them alive in jail.

I am surprised that one half of the members who have responded indicated that they could accept punishment other than execution for the horrible murders and mayhem committed by the bomber. There is still hope for society! Rivera229, Tieup1 and Wataru14 were especially direct in their rejection of the death penalty in this case.

Hello,
also against death penalty. I think ever person had make something that would punished by with death penalty have accepted this and would not stop him. On other hand it could make him to a martyr and you would surly no let die in way that he could not a martyr.
One way would if do in by natural, even this cost very much.

I wouldn't consider his execution to be us stooping down to his level. The death penalty to a mass murderer by a state is lawful, far more lawful then a lunatic killing people out of an evil and braindead motive.

Executing him, would gain nothing, far better to let him rot in jail !

I do believe that the United States would gain stature, respect, if you will, by locking the bomber up forever, for the rest of his natural life. It will be a step to show that our country is not motivated by revenge and hatred. Even in this moment.

I just listened to former Rhode Island Senator and Governor Lincoln Chafee being interviewed about his announcement that he is exploring a run for President. I am a Rhode Islander and I think I should probably comment on his announcement in a separate topic. I will say that he was hurt politically when, as Governor, he fought to prevent the Federal Justice department which wanted to bring trial against a murderer who killed a man during a robbery. There was strong sentiment amongst many in this state, to let the Feds take the killer, try and get a conviction, and then execute him. But Chafee fought that, on the basis of State's rights to keep him in the state where the crime was committed.

R.I. abolished the death penalty a century and a half ago. Chafee was strong and prevailed in his argument that this state has a long history of opposition to the death penalty. The culprit is now incarcerated for life without possibility of parole.

I agree with Lake Lover. Of course I think that Tsarniev should have
his cell decorated with pictures of the people he murdered.

I now know who to support in the coming Democratic primaries.
Thanks for that as well.

I generally don't agree with the death penalty either, and there is none in my state (Maine), but for cases where the matter is clear-cut I have no problem with it, like the case of that Joker wannabe over in Aurora Colorado. Mentally impaired or not, i say fry his ass.
Where the evidence is only circumstantial, as it so often is, then i do have a problem with it.
Problem is; there's no way of knowing how directly the younger Tsarnaev brother's actions influenced matters. Really, the most they can really clearly prove was that he was an accessory before the fact. Nothing else. No one saw him do anything directly to anyone - unlike his brother who fought arrest to the death - except flee from the police. No one saw him set up the traps. No one saw him actually assault anyone. It's all circumstantial. Damning as hell but nonetheless circumstantial.
In this case therefore, i think a life sentence probably is best.

Below is a link to 5 pages of interesting testimony from the penalty phase of the trial. Some may find it touching. Please note that the posting is in reverse order. The earliest testimony notes are at the bottom of page five and the final notes of today are at the top of page one. So, to read them in proper sequence one must scroll down to the bottom and select page '5'. then scroll upward to the top as you read. When you complete page '5' simply scroll to the bottom and then select page '4' and read upward again. Hope that explains the process!
