The Social Network

Postby haloguy » Thu Dec 09, 2010 1:17 pm

I had a facebook, but I realized after thinking it over for a while, that it doesn't really do that much for me, I see all my friends for about 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, and when I get home, I just want some ME time. Facebook was also pretty useless for me, I never got anything accomplished except laughing at this week's kegger. This site, on the other hand is cool, I meet new people, have debates, and write stories, nothing that facebook could ever do for me.

that is why yesterday I deactivated my account

any other similar social network stories? does anyone else use one, did anyone else do what I did?

I plan on deactivating my Myspace account, as soon as the site "remembers" I do have a real password. lol

It's gratifying to read this. I thought that I was the only one- from my generation, anyway- to not have a facebook page. I would rather hang out on this site, where I can at least talk to like-minded people and share my writing. I got as far as registering on facebook- only to see what it was all about. I never even got as far as putting together a page. It's not a good idea for teachers, anyway. It's too easy to get into trouble, as students are constantly sending friend requests. I know people who waste HOURS a day on that site... though I shouldn't throw stones- I spend enough time HERE!

I use FetLife. For the over-18 crowd, it caters to all of us who love binding, gagging, and struggling :) :gag:

Facebook has helped me keep up with old friends I'm no longer in contact with. I still know a lot of people but not everyone. I am out of college now though and people are moving on. It would have been kind of pointless when I was in high school.

Myspace was a good idea but the site just went haywire. I'm afraid Facebook is going the same route. The idea is great. I used to like Facebook a lot more than I do now. Myspace just sucks.

Had Facebook (along ith computers and the Internet of curse) been around when I was Haloguy's age, I might've used it to keep in contact with friends myself once we were no longer sewing each other on a regular basis. Even in high school it might have been useful as I lived in a rural area and some of my friends lived mles away from me and I had no car at the time. By the time Facebook was developed though I had no one left in my life to kep in touch wit; had it come aong earlier this might not be the cas.
It's up to you Haloguy but perhaps you should Maintain Facebook; it might not be very useful now but when you and your friends leave high school and see one another a lot less you might be glad you have it to keep in touch. I never have used it myself though, but frm others say of it it could be useful further down the line.
As for me, THIS site is my main social contact outside of work, and I am perfectly happy with it. I might get on people's nerves here from time to time (unintentionally, usually) and vice versa, but I feel a sense of community here that I personally have not enjoyed otherwise in a great many years!

Jason T you're not anywhere close to being that old!

But I like Halo's point of view.... Don't be Face-bullied! (I want that to become a term in the dictionary). I have a love, hate relationship with Facebook but ultimately embrace in part because I work I'm an interactive consultant.

Its tempting to share with fellow TUG mates some first hand knowledge I have about them and other early social networks. I consulted the most of the founders in the early stages. Its goods news and bad news in areas most people miss

Not sure I get your point. I never said my age was the only factor in why I have no one left to keep in touch with. There are many others as well.

Basically if I'm on a computer, I'm on Facebook.
