We Need Better Publicity

Postby LordNelson » Fri Feb 14, 2014 6:24 pm

The following article appeared in a newspaper;

A Waco sign company has created a decal that goes on the tailgate of a pickup showing a blonde woman, her hair covering her face and her hands and feet tied up. When placed on the tailgate, it creates the optical illusion that there’s actually a woman who’s tied up and in the bed of the truck.

“I wasn’t expecting the reactions that we got, nor was it really anything we certainly condone or anything else,” the sign company’s owner told a Waco TV station. “But it was just something…we had to put out there to see who notices it.”

Supposedly it was done to demonstrate how realistic the company’s decals are. According to the Huffington Post, the TV station, KWTX, “asked viewers what they thought of the marketing stunt, and the responses the station received were pretty ‘one-sided’ against it. Some viewers said they even called police when they saw the decal, thinking a woman was truly in trouble.”

Nice job wasting police time.

Its website asks, “How far is too far; an experiment in marketing.” And the controversial marketing strategy has paid off. There has been a rise in decal orders.

An ad like this is not the kind of publicity our "hobby" needs. Hopefully the public doesn't get the idea that we all drive around with our victims in the back of our trucks.

I'm unsure of your point, but that's probably not the kind of publicity we want. :mouthopen:

When I say "publicity" I mean that we need to have the world introduced to the fact that what we do can be fun. Fifty Shades of Grey and Madonna's videos do nothing to further our cause. When I say "better publicity" I mean publicity that is better than this effort which obviously backfired.

it would be pretty messed up if the headline of the newspaper said ``Hey that looks like fun, let`s all try it``.

and people will always think what we do is weird. when you think about it from a normal persons point of view, it kind of is, but i don't see it in a bad way because it only affects those who enjoy it.

I have edited my above statements because I didn't make myself as clear as I had intended. I did not intend to make it sound like I was defending the decal. I consider it negative publicity. I was just trying to make the point that whenever something bondage related gets publicity it is usually negative like this ad or a novelty fad like Fifty Shades of Grey. We all know that what we do is fairly common so there must be a few influential people who think like we do but none are willing to step up and tell the world it is fun.

If something is being reported on, it's probably negative publicity. The media doesn't report a lot on good stories.

And even when it does report good news there almost always seems to be some kind of negative twist to it... like the clever girl scout in San Francisco who set up in front of a legal pot dispensary and sold 117 boxes of cookies in two hours. Her own troop was supportive but the girl scout leadership in Colorado are making a fuss about it and telling their girl scouts they cannot do that themselves.

The bondage in Fifty shades of Grey is shit. The average story here and on other sites is far more detailed and descriptive and even realistic compared to FSOG.

Oh, the problem isn't people thinking we tie people up in the back of our trucks. It's people thinking they're victims! Anyway, it doesn't really seem like this was related to our hobby. Less "those warped, sadistic perverts should burn in hell" and more "oh my god someone save this woman!". I honestly don't see anything about kink.

Hi lads, just thought i'd wade in on this, bondage is quite normal and even quite common in most people's sex lives. It will always depend on the individual and how far they take it. Tying up my missus is one thing, but that sign is more about kidnapping. like that guy who kept them girls in his cellar for like 20 years. That sign isn't really showing bondage in any kind of light, it's more I would say about abuse towards women.

That' how I see it anyway, because take away the ropes -which are hard to see in the photo anyway- and the image is still that of an abused woman.
There's always time for a nice cup of tea.

I can sort of understand that people who are not interested in bondage don´t get it and see it in a bad light. I am just guessing, but most people here probably don´t really know why they enjoy bondage. Imagine someone who doesn´t. All that person sees is someone being restricted by someone else, which can be pretty scary.
Also, bondage is mainly seen as a part of sex, and sex is EVIL. Certainly not something a GOOD citizen talks about in public. This connotation does not help. That bondage can also be a game is often ignored, or maybe not understood at all. Again, there are probably people here who think bondage has to be about sex, period.

But it seems to me that there is a trend into a positive direction, with more tolerance and acceptance of "strange" things. The victories of the LGBT-people seems to indicate this. The situation will probably continue to get better, as long as this awful countermovement that tries to bring back "good, old values" doesn´t get too strong.

Nonono, not just evil. It´s EVIL.

I´m mainly joking. Here at least, people seem to be pretty open and don´t have a problem with sex directly. But there is still something left from the old thought that it is sinful, insofar as you shouldn´t speak about it in public. There is still shame going around, because it is still considered sort of dirty. And everything that is connected with sex is therefor also dirty.

You can blame the Bible thumpers for that bit of societal imbalance that cites making love as evil while violence is okay.
