Down on the Farm (Continued) Part 2 Conclusion

Postby Alex95 » Thu Apr 28, 2011 10:05 pm

Well, I got a lot of replys to the story. More than I expected and from what I hear, I think I am going to continue with it for a while or at least until I get bored writing it. This is the next portion

Zac and his mother arrived home shortly after departing from the home of their new neighbors. It had been quite an experience to say the least. Norma took a look at it with several different sets of eyes. She had been through a fair amount this morning and she was trying to weigh the good and the bad with all of it. She wasn't sure how to respond actually. She was mad at Zac for heading out without first obtaining her permission on the matter. However, he had meant no harm in the matter and everything had worked out for the better in the long run. They had both made a new friend and she now had something to talk about over lunch. Not quite sure what to do, she decided to let the matter simmer for the time being and focus her attention on preparing the meal.

She parked the car and the two of them exited and returned to the house. Zac rolled right into the living room where Emily was still parked in front of the television. She was in the same condition that her mother had left her in when the need to retrieve Zac had arisen. Emily rarely caused her any grief, but at the same time she didn't do all that much. Norma left Zac with his sister in the living room and went back into the kitchen and put some soup on the stove that would serve as the midday meal. She prepared a fresh salad with stores retrieved from her fridge and began the process of setting the table for the seven people who would be eating there. Norma's husband had two farm hands who worked on the farm with him and kept the place in good working condition. It was too much for one man to run on his own. Well, at least a man who lacked the 9 children that his parents had.

The two me who worked arrived shortly before 8 for the first milking and would stay and work as needed throughout the day. During the slower times of the year they would head home around 2:00 or so and come back later on in the evening to run the second milking of the cows that was required. The whole process was automated and Zac's father had it down to a science. They could milk, feed and stable the farms 107 head of cow in a little under 80 minutes. Lunch had never been an agreed upon condition of the two men's employment, but the farmer was always happy to have them at his table. They were almost part of the family although they lived apart. Norma finished her work and called out on the radio that the food was ready and they should come in and get it. She knew it would take them about 15 minutes to drop what they were doing and make their way back to the house. So, she called early so they would arrive to a hot meal.

A few minutes later, the kitchen was full of bodies quickly consuming the small feast that Norma had prepared. They were a mixed bunch. John, Norma's husband sat at the far end of the table. Sharing stories of the days progress with the rest of the family. Robbie, a short haired boy of 16 years of age and Norma's oldest son sat at his left. Both showed the labors of the day. Robbie was a hard worker and more than willing to offer his father a much needed set of hands when his schedule permitted him. Although, his dreams were elsewhere with his pursuit for his coming life. John knew Robbie was not going to grow up to take up the family business. That left Zac as the likely future farmer of this establishment when his father left his world. However, that was still far off in the near future and yet to be deiced. Right now John just wanted Zac to be a child and enjoy this time of exploration and fun that came with growing up.

Zac and his sister took seat next to Robbie on the same side of the table. Zac was still in his skates and helmet and Emily was still in her pj's and slippers from the morning. The two farm hands Eric and Tom seated themselves across from the children on the far side of the table and ate grateful for the offering of a hot meal after a long morning. The morning's work was complete and John planned to spend his afternoon tuning up a one of his tractors that would be needed in the coming weeks of summer. Tom would be staying behind to help him and Eric would be taking the afternoon off. The two young men were paid by the hour.

Robbie still had homework to attend to and his afternoon was already spoken for. Norma listened to her husband explain the day to her as they sat and ate. She in turn shared her little adventure from earlier in the day with him. John nodded here and there giving both his approval and disapproval for the events as they had unfolded. He let the matter finish before clearing his throat and doling out a judgment on the whole matter.

"Zac," He began. "Don't wander off so far without letting your mom or me know where you are going is that clear?"

Zac nodded silently but read the look in his father's eyes and then responded audibly. "Yes sir, understood."

"Good now that is settled, I have a task suited to your talents. Your mother is going to have to start mowing lawn next week and we need all the sticks out in the yard cleared so she can mow. I would appreciate it if you would use your afternoon to see this accomplished. You too Emily, it's too nice a day to stay cooped up in doors. After lunch get dressed and give your brother a hand." John concluded

Both children replied with a less than thrilled response, but they knew arguing against the point was useless. After lunch Zac skated out the door a second time and Emily followed him shortly after changing into some blue jeans and a sweatshirt. The task took them several hours to complete. The worked their way around the yard that was a good 3 acres of land littered with quite a few trees. They used an old garden cart to gather the sticks and relocate them to the farm's burn pile. It was a large area where brush and other things were disposed of by fire. The work was long, but not difficult. John had assigned it to them not out of anger or as a punishment for Zac's morning. It was something that needed doing and it seemed like a good time to do it.

When the work was done for the day, Zac and Emily spent the remainder of the afternoon playing out in the yard. The engaged in several activities killing off the time between the end of their labors and when Mom called dinner over the radio. The evening meal was Hamburgers with potato chips and pop. Nothing all that special, but it served as a quick meal on Saturday evenings. The family resumed their normal positions around the table, but the two farm hands were quite absent. Already gone home for the day after the second milking of the cows. The family ate and shared conversation from the day and their plans for the next day. Robbie had finished his homework and planned to head into town the next day for some time to meet up some of his friends from school. The whole family was going to church in the later part of the morning. John would do the work the farm required of him and take the remainder of the day off. Norma was going into town shortly after church to do the weekly grocery shopping.

John tended to spend his Sunday afternoons with his two youngest children and Robbie when he was home. That would give Norma a chance to head out and get some errands run while Emily and Zac were taken care of. The two younger children planned a rather quiet day at home just playing whatever. Dinner went by quickly and pretty soon the family said their good nights. Robbie and Emily headed upstairs to their rooms to spend the remainder of the evening. John and Norma retired to the living room for some alone time and Zac headed down the basement from where he had come earlier in the day. It was fast closing on his appointed bedtime and he still had a lot to do in order to prepare for it. Once he finished descending the stairs, he rolled back over to his room and began digging through the bottom drawer on his dresser. It contained most of his nightwear.

He picked something out and set it on the bed. Then he skated over to the side of the bed and sat down. The young boy stripped the two plastic roller skates off his feet and slid them neatly together under the bed. Then, he took off the helmet and set it over the knob of the foot board of the bed as well. He scooped up his change of clothes and headed out of the room again. He made his way across the basement on foot to the bathroom located at the bottom of the stairs. His father had renovated the area not long after adding his room to the basement. It was a simple bathroom. Really, it was a half bath more than anything else. It contained a small stand up shower in one corner and a toilet and sink. This served mostly as Zac's personal bathroom or a spare toilet when someone was working down the basement or the other two bathrooms were filled.

The other two bathrooms in the house were located on the second floor. One off the master bedroom and another one at the end of the hallway. His father had installed this one a few weeks after adding Zac's personal room to the house. Before that, the young man had to climb two flights of stairs to gain access to the one in the hallway. He built it to keep the complaints of the other children down from Zac not waking them up at night. Zac closed the door locking it behind him. Then he stripped down and stepped into the shower. He took a 10 minute shower allowing the warm water to fall across him comfortably and soak the grime of the day away from him. Once he was done, he stepped out of the shower, dried himself off with a large towel and got dressed for bed. He went through the other nightly rituals which were related to his wind down time. He brushed his teeth, deposited his clothes from the day in the hamper and took a moment to inspect his wound from earlier in the day.

It was still there when he ripped off the bandage. It was beginning to scab over and had stopped bleeding. He knew it would be a few days before all signs of it were gone, but at least the majority of the pain from it had moved on. He grabbed a large bandage from the medicine chest and redressed the wound. He closed the cabinet and his arm over the mirror to clear the fog from the shower's hot water off of it. He took a moment as he often did and examined himself in the mirror. The was a long stripe that ran down the side of his face and under his chin where his helmet had sat. He had a good deal of fun with skating, but it was more comfortable to have the helmet off for the night none the less. With that matter concluded, he flipped off the bathroom light and headed back towards his room making his way slowly through the darkness. There was still a little light coming in a few of the basement windows as the last of the sunlight was beginning to fade. It was almost 8:15 and he was intended to be in bed by 8:30 pm as was his custom.

Zac crossed the last of the basement, closed his door and headed over towards his bed to lay down. He wished he had a later bed time quite often. It wasn't really fair that his sister got to stay up to 11 and he had to be in bed ad 8:30 despite the small difference in their age. He pulled back the covers and pulled his legs up into the bed. The nightgown from the night before had made way for more traditional pajamas. Zac was wearing a set of blue flannel sleep pants with a long sleeved pajama top made of the same material. The outfit was faded and well worn. It had been Robbie's some time ago. While it showed its age, it was still very comfortable and had kept several of Norma's boys warm on colder nights than this one. He also put on a fresh pair of white socks with the pajamas, he always did with pj’s, but not always with a nightgown.

The young boy laid back in bed and shut his eyes. He still had a few minutes, but time wasn't a important concept to him. His mother might be in later on to check on him, but most like she wouldn't. He wasn't 5 years old any more and she respected his privacy quite a bit more now. Zac laid back and closed his eyes waiting for sleep to come. However, it didn't. His mind was still rather active with the events of the day. He thought back about everything that had transpired. He thought of Tammy. She was a rather peculiar girl to say the least. He met her mostly by accident, but there was something about her that was different. Zac felt a strange attraction to her. He had been friends with girls before, but this was different. It wasn't love, he dismissed that thought outright not fully ready to accept he was capable of such a thing outside of his family.

Still, there was a strange attraction he and she shared. It troubled him not being able to put this feeling into words. But he knew it was there and he was still trying to figure out what it was. Something about her was different. Aside from the fact that she was weird. He looked back to finding her tied up in her back yard. Most normal kids would find being like that frightening. Zac let the thought move through his mind about not being able to move his hands. He felt a strange mix of fear and distaste for the idea. Still, his observations of Tammy put it into a different light. She had been tied up when he had come bolting out of the forest at her at full speed. Even when he fell and got hurt, her mannerism remained calm. She seemed comfortable with the idea and seemed to function well without the use of her hands for balance or anything for that matter.

He had omitted the part of her being tied up from his explanation to his mother. He wasn't sure how she would react to the situation if she found out about it. He liked Tammy and wanted to become better friends. However, this little game of hers might cause some problems if his mother found out about it. He didn't know if Sarah and told Norma about it, but he could only guess that she would keep things like that to herself as well. Zac took a deep breath and let the matters roll over in his head and wander off on several different tangents. His initial fear of the subject now traversed down the path towards curiosity. He found himself wondering what Tammy saw in being tied up and what it would be like to be tied. It's seems to be a natural curiosity with children to explore their world and their observations of it. It was no different with Zac.

Zac looked over and made sure the door to his room was closed. It was passed his bedtime now and anything he tried needed to be in secret. He decided that he would explore this matter a little bit more. Zac reached under his bed again and came of with a small flashlight. It served as a way to keep from tripping on late night trips to the toilet. He flicked it on and set it on his bed the beam aimed away from his door. The small light provided just enough for him to see by, or at least see what items in the room. He flipped his covers off quietly and put his feet down on the floor before rising to them. Zac stood there a moment and then looped his arms around behind his back. He locked his wrists with each hand gripping the opposite arm. The idea was to mimic having his hands tied like Tammy's had been earlier in the day.

Zac made his way around the room slowly taking a few steps at a time. He picked his way carefully. It was an awkward feeling walking around with his arms that way, but it wasn't as difficult as he had originally anticipated. He tried moving a book that he left on the floor across the room only using his legs. It took some effort, but he succeeded. Then, it happened. He took one step wrong and began to fall forward. Zac released his hands on reflex and managed to brace himself against the fall by quickly grabbing the side of his bed. His first round of experimentation only lasted five minutes or so, but it yielded some information. He learned some of the adjustments that Tammy would have to make to move with her hands tied behind her, but he still didn't see what she saw in it. He decided that this needed to be tried further. He was more curious about this now than he had originally been. He decided that he would try the next phase of experimentation and try actually being tied up. However, he resolved himself after his first fall that he would stay seated for the duration of this exercise. He was just curious how it felt to actually be bound.

Zac's search began with another look around his room. He needed something that was either rope or would serve that purpose. He gave the matter some thought about where he could find a piece of rope. The farm was full of it. There was bailing twine in almost every barn not to mention probably at least 50 or 60 miles of rope spread out in all the locations on the old dairy farm. He knew there was some in the garage. His sister had a jump rope up in her room, in fact she had several. The problem, was that since Zac was a boy he didn't have any in his room. In fact as his mind wandered, he knew for a fact that there was no rope in his room. There was likely to be some some place around the basement in all the clutter. However, that would mean a trip venturing outside of his room and that had risks in itself. He could feign a trip to the bathroom if he got caught. However, if he got caught holding a piece of rope that would require some explanation on his part. Something he wasn't prepared for yet.

No, whatever he was going to use, had to be in this room. His room in the basement where it could be accessed without drawing attention to himself. He gathered up the small flashlight and began shinning it around the circumference of the room. There wasn't much of anything that would serve as a rope. His first search yielded nothing of any real value. However, on his second pass, he caught sight of something that might work. He had missed it on the first pass. On the back of his door leading into the room was a hook for hanging clothing and the like. There were a few things thrown over each other on top of the hook. The outermost item was a blazer jacket that he would often wear to church on Sundays. However, buried a few layers below it he caught sight of the hem of something that might work.

Zac got up from his bed and quietly made his way across the room. He held the light with one hand and tore through the hanging pile with the other. The item he was looking for was easily found. Underneath the blazer and two coats, was an old bathrobe. His mother had gotten it for him a year or two ago. It was made of a heavy fleece material. He really didn't care for it as a practice item. He didn't like the weight it added if he wore it around the house over pajamas and it was too warm to sleep in even during the winter. His mother had got it for him and it had spent the better part of a year and half just hanging on the back of his door. He tried wearing it a few times before deciding that he didn't care for it and it just hung there.

Zac finished digging the top couple of layers off and pulled the robe down off the door. He held it loosely by the collar with one hand. It was dark blue in color and made of a heavy soft terrycloth material. He set the robe down on the floor for a moment. Then, he returned the remaining contents of the pile to the door. Then, he collected the bath robe off the floor. Zac returned to where he had been sitting and looked down at the bathrobe. It was long and would reach a few inches past his knees if he put it on. It had long sleeves, a hood, and tied with a long belt at the waist to keep it closed. That was what he was looking for of course. Zac unthreaded the belt from the robe and drew it out of the loops that attached it to the garment. The process took only a minute or two before it was free.

The belt was made of the same material as the robe itself and was fairly sturdy in construction. It was an inch thick at most places and about 4 and a half feet in length. Not really a proper rope, but under the circumstances it would do. Zac drew his arms around behind his back and began to wrap the belt around his wrists. He made several loops and managed to know the ends behind him in a square knot. Zac grew up working on the farm and helping hid father and the other two farm hands on and off. He had some knowledge and experience with knots. However, he never imagined that he would be using it for this purpose. Once his hands were tied, Zac sat back and just examined his situation. He moved his arms around a little and tried to see what he could do with his hands bound like this. With his arms joined behind him, his movement was pretty limited. Zac brought his hands up and gave the robe belt a few good tugs. Then, his hands slipped out of the loops he had made and the belt landed with a soft plop on the bed behind him. It had proven an easy escape.

Zac turned around and retrieved it. The belt was little more now than a large loop with the ends joined by the knot. It took him a couple of minutes to jerk the knot free. It was dark and the silly thing had tightened up on itself from his struggling. Zac made a second attempt. This time, he took his time and made the coils a little tighter and made sure the knot held snug. However, after a few minutes of struggling, he managed to dislodge his hands easily again. The child reset for a third attempt and yielded a similar result. He abandoned the idea of a fourth attempt. It was clear to him by know, he lacked the skills to tie his own hands behind his back. He set the belt on his lap freeing the knot from it and stared down at it. The whole problem was really beginning to bother him. However, there wasn't much that he could do about it at current. He debated tying his feet together to try that out at least. He figured he could manage that without much problem. However, his attempt got cut short when he heard a knock at the door to his room.

"Zac, honey is everything alright?" Normal spoke softly through the door as she guided it gently open.

Zac looked up at his mother. He couldn't believe that he had gotten caught so easily. He was dead meat. Zac was already in trouble for going across the woods without his mother's permission. Now he was up past his bed time and worse yet he had no explanation viable short of the truth.

"I thought you didn't like wearing that." His mother commented looking down at the bathrobe where it was still laying on the end of Zac's bed where the young child had left it.

'Bathrobe', the word shot into Zac's head almost immediately. "I was trying to sleep, but I got cold, so I thought I would put it on mom. But the belt was all funny and I was trying to figure out how to get it back in. It's been really hard with just a flashlight. Sorry if I disturbed you, I know I should be asleep." Zac finished filling in the explanation and trying to gauge his mother's reaction to it.

His mother nodded a moment and then looked down at him. "Stand up, I can give you hand if you want." Norma instructed.

Her son rose from where he was sitting. Honestly, he didn't know what else to do and decided to move with it. Norma flicked on the light and crossed the room. She reached down and took up the robe from off the foot of his bed. "Can you hold your arms out please?" She asked her son.

Zac complied with the request holding his arms out to his sides. His mother flipped the bathrobe out some and threaded her son's arms through the sleeves. Once the sleeves were in place, she pushed his arms down slightly raised from his sides and guided him so that he was facing her. Norma then took the belt from Zac's hand and proceeded to put it where it belonged. She drew the robe snuggly around her son's body and threaded the belt through the five loops that held it in place. She drew the robe closed and pulled the belt tight tying it in a double knot snuggly around his waist. She even pulled the hood up over top of his head to cover his ears and keep them warm.

"There we go, snug as a bug in a run. Alright now lets get you all set for bed." Norma commented.

The woman lead Zac over to the bed where she drew back the covers. Zac laid himself down allowing his head to come to rest on his pillow. Norma drew the covers up over him up to his shoulders. "There we go, that should keep you nice and warm."

Norma crossed the room safe in the knowledge that her son was safety tucked in for the night. She stood next to the door with her finger on the switch.

"You are getting older Zac, but you will never be too old for me to tuck in. I know you dislike your bed time, but it will stay in effect for now. Once school is out in a few weeks, you can start staying up later with your brother and sister for the summer. But for right now you need your rest. We have church tomorrow and you should be well rested." With that, Norma flicked off the light leaving her son in darkness.

Zac laid there on his side. He wasn't sure what to do. He had avoided any problem with his mother. In fact, the young man believed that he had gotten away with his little experiment undetected. Zac realized that he would have a later bed time in the near future. Something he had spent most of the part of his life where he could think rationally looking forward to. However, he still had a new problem that this experiment had caused him. He was already starting to get warm from having the robe on. If it was winter, it would have been warm for it, but it was spring and while his room collected it's share of cool air, it was not all that cold. Still, after everything that had just happened, he was reluctant to remove it.

If his mother returned and found his not wearing it, there would be an explanation required. Still, he didn't want to be too hot to sleep comfortably. Zac settled that he was stuck like he was for the moment, but he did what he could to cool down a little. He drew the covers down some and opened the top of the robe a little bit. The top around the collar cooperated, but the section where the belt was draw snuggly across his waist didn't. Zac reached down and tugged on the belt a few times and it didn't yield any more slack. He tried pulling on the knot, but all that did was make it tighter. So, he decided to try and work some more slack into it manually. Zac lifted up a part of the belt that ran between two of the loops. He worked his left hand under it up to the wrist and began applying leverage to loosen it a little. However, it held snug and didn't budge much.

When that didn't work he tried to remove his hand from under the belt. It did a fair job of pinning his wrist as he just pulled with that arm. When he failed to dislodge it easily, he reached over with his right hand so he could lift the belt high enough to free his pinned arm. Zac took hold of the belt, but then he stopped. Suddenly, a revelation came to him or at least he thought it was a stroke of genius. Rather than pulling his arm loose, he moved his right arm away from his left. Then, he tried to replicate the situation that his left wrist was in with his right. This proved rather difficult, but after wriggling around some, he managed to work the belt so that both his wrist were pinned beneath it.

With both of his wrists pinned underneath the belt, he began tugging against it. He found with both his arms there, he was secured pretty well. After a few tugs, he realized that his hands were pinned at least. He would be able to free himself if he put enough effort into the situation. However, this was still an experiment, Zac stopped struggling and just laid there for a minute. There was something interesting about all this. He tried to move, but found out that he couldn't well at least not as freely as he normally would. He laid there on his side with his hands pinned to his waist drawing deep breaths. Between the robe, his pajamas and the covers, he was pretty warm and this was taking it's tole on him.

Zac stopped squirming and just laid there. Without motion to create more heat, be began to cool down a little although he was still warmer than he wanted to be. He just laid there trying to remain as still as he could so that his body would cool down. Having his hands pinned helped. He tugged against the belt gently one final time. His experimenting with all this stuff had yielded some interesting results. He wasn't sure how to process them, but he was beginning to get an understanding at the very least. He decided to see if he could fall asleep like this. Zac inched his way towards the top of the bed and brought his head to rest gently on the pillow. He found himself wondering what the next time he would see Tammy would bring. His eyes closed gently and his breathing slowed before long he was asleep.

I am going to separate the story here again. Let me know what you think.

Morning

I am going to make the intro to this section quick to move the story along.

Sunday morning came the same way that it always did on the Farm for Zac and the rest of his Family. Zac's father and Robbie were both up at the crack of dawn to go and milk the cows. Zac, his sister and Norma all slept in a little while longer than those two. Robbie had enjoyed the same privilege when he was younger, but once he reached 12 his Sunday mornings changed. Zac would be reaching that age in a short time and would most likely end up learning all the trades of the farm. Still, his father desired that he have a little longer to be a kid. He would be an adult for the rest of his life.

Zac sat up in bed looking out the window where light was no streaming in from the morning sun. It was still early, about the same time that he had woken up the day before. Zac looked over at the clock on his dresser. The large red numbers showed it was just a little after 7:00 am. He sat up in bed and yawned raising his arms above his head as was his normal morning custom before bringing his hands down to wipe the sleepiness from his eyes. As he got through with the third or fourth rub, he suddenly realized that his hands were not secured to his waist any more. They had not been all that secure to begin with. He must have pulled them loose while he was asleep. The young man's rest had been pleasant and deep.

Zac got up and rolled his way out of the bed bringing his feet to rest on the floor. He stepped away from the bed and let out a second yawn. His roller skates and clothes remained where they were. His mother often quoted that he lived in those skates, but today was different. Today was Sunday and that meant a change in the routine. Well, at least for the morning. Zac collected his clothes from their special drawer and began to make his way across the basement towards the bathroom. He had a lot of things he needed to do in order to get ready for church. While he had rested well despite wearing the robe to bed, it had been a warm night and a second shower was added to the things that he needed this morning.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Upstairs, Norma was working her way through preparing breakfast and getting the rest of the things together for the day ahead. A woman's work is never done. She had to cook breakfast, make a shopping list, wake up Zac's sister, and get her husband's and Robbie's clothing ready for Church. It was quite a full plate and her time was running short. Breakfast was laid out and everything was ready other than the people who needed to consume it. Emily appeared first already dressed at her mother's behest. Zac made his way up the stairs a few minutes later all neatly groomed and wearing his Sunday bests. Their father and Robbie came in half an hour later from the barn. The family sat and spoke in passing about the plans for the rest of the day.

John would take the kids off to Sunday School after the meal. He would then attend a class of his own. Norma would stay behind for another hour or so and clean up the mess from breakfast. Afterwords she would join the rest of the family at Church. Then it would be home for a quick lunch of grilled cheese and tomato soup. Norma would go into town and do the weekly grocery shopping. The kids and John would stay home and spend some quality time together or do their own things. They would have dinner that night and John would see to the cows at the end of the evening as he always did before the kids went off to bed for the evening. Sundays on the farm were routine and simple. A welcome respite from the normal grind of the week before everyone had to start again the next day.

The family consumed the meal and the children and their father departed for church without much thought on the matter. Norma stayed behind as planned and started getting everything ready for this afternoon's shopping trip. She only made two trips into town every week. Otherwise, she was needed here and that was all there was to it. The family lived in a rather rural community as the story indicates. However, the town they called home was really only half an hour away by car. It really wasn't big enough to call it a city, but it had it's share of stores and other businesses. It was a nice convince to have when they needed it, but Norma still preferred the quiet life of the farm to the busy run of the city.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Church came and went as it always did. The two family vehicles pulled back in and the youngest set of siblings jumped out and dashed to their respective rooms. It almost seemed like a race to see who could get of their church clothes first. John was barely hanging up his hat when Emily bolted down the stair in a pair of flip flops and a sun dress. Zac wasn't much fancier with blue jeans and a white t-shirt. Norma just dismissed the whole bunch of them. She was in no hurry to change herself. She was going out after lunch and her Sunday best suited her needs well for that purpose. Robbie and her husband were no better being back in work clothes before she could turn the sandwiches twice.

The two adults of the group already had their plans for the day. Discussion moved around about what the kids would be doing. The question came from John who would be spending the afternoon in the den with the morning paper, unless one of his children wanted this block of his time. They were the most important thing in his life. The real joy of his labors were seeing them happy. His own time was of little consequence to him. Most of it got devoted to the farm to begin with. Still, he never turned down a game of checkers or chess which, Zac had been teaching him lately after taking up an interest in the game two years ago.

"So guys what do you have planned for the afternoon?" John asked. Directing the conversation in the direction of his children.

"First, I am not a guy, I am a gal. Geez Dad if you are going to talk like a hill billy then at least get it right." Emily interjected correcting her father's grammatical mistake with an almost sarcastic tone. "Anyways it's a nice day outside and I think I am just going to spend it out there." It was a typical response from her during nice weather. She lacked the common interest that the boys did and preferred some solitude in her life when she could get it.

Robbie swallowed the bite of sandwich in his mouth before answering. "Halo 3." He finished the phrase as if it were a sentence before taking another bite of his sandwich.

John was not foreign to the idea of video games. However, his lifestyle left him without the time to fully undertake such an indulgence. Mario, he could understand. The plumber jumped on the turtle in and Goombas. Halo 3 on the other hand was not his thing. The gaming times had gotten ahead of him. Robbie never denied his father the second controller to the system. In fact he was more than happy to share the time with him. However, this usually limited him to offline coop on the easy difficult where his dad proved more a hindrance than a help. John decided to leave the matter alone.

He turned his attention to Zac now. "And what about you my youngest son? What shall you pursue this afternoon?" The words were long and intentional on gaining his sons attention and thought. It took Zac a few moments to decode the question. However, he never got a chance to answer.

"Why Zac is coming with me. Summer is right around the corner and he needs new shorts. The three pairs he has from Robbie are in OK shape, but they won't be enough to get bye all summer." Zac wished he had been quicker on coming up with a reply. However, it appeared that his afternoon had already been planned out for him. Emily shot him a quick smirk across the table in between bites. His mother caught site of it.

"Don't worry little Missy, you'll get your turn next weekend. I know neither of you want to go. So, I won't make you go together for the sake of time, but it needs to be done." Zac returned the smirk towards his sister. Unfortunately, he would get the first turn on this outing.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The family had finished eating a little while ago. Zac made a quick trip down the basement to retrieve a pair of socks and some white tennis shoes. He could have delayed the trip more, but his mother put it best. "The sooner we leave the sooner we get back." It was a simple phrase and hard to argue with any way to put it. Norma pulled the car out of the garage driving it as she usually did. Zac took a seat in the rear of the car. He had recently graduated out from using a booster seat about 9 months earlier. However, he was small for his age and his mother still would not let him ride up front. She swung the car around and they were off towards the town.

Norma made the trip only twice a week. Zac on the other hand made it much more frequently. However, he was usually riding the big yellow meat wagon rather than in the back seat of his mother's car. Norma's errand runs usually involved the main shopping trip on Sunday afternoons. She would pick of a weeks groceries and a few other things normally. She would usually make a second trip on Thursday mornings to do the banking and take care of other affairs in town if she had any that needed her attention. She usually left the kids at home on Sundays when she could. On Thursdays they were normally at school and during the summer they would help their father or Robbie could attend to their needs for a few hours while she was gone. They really didn't want to go in the first place and she usually proved more efficient time wise when she was alone. The drive into town took a good half hour. Not too bad, but it could prove rough with a car loaded with melting groceries.

Zac sat in the back seat of the car and watch as the familiar scenery blew by. His thoughts were a mixed expression of being upset and wonder. He had gathered up what little money he owned in the hopes that something might catch his eye. At the age of 10, he rarely got a chance to go into town. His father was too busy mostly for a trip if he wanted to buy something and his mother usually only made the two journeys a week. Zac fished through his pocket and counted the money again for something to do to pass the time on the journey down. He had $14.12 not a whole lot of money, but more than enough for a boy of his age. Zac and his siblings did not receive any allowance. Their father had decided at a young age they would know the value of a dollar. Sometimes they money on birthdays or Christmas, but that usually got spent not long after.

Zac's current small fortune had been earned. The three children each had a set of normal duties that they performed each week. These chores were expected. Anything beyond that and John paid his children for their labor. For example, Robbie was not required to go and work in the barn each morning and evening. However, he was paid 5 dollars for each time that he did it. Since he had got his license earlier in the year his father had given him an older truck he had and put insurance on it for the boy. The truck was safe and ran well enough, but it got about 10 miles to the gallon and with the rising price of gas Robbie found himself milking the cows on a regular basis to keep the tank full. The sticks Emily and Zac had picked up the day before had added another 5 bucks to his running total and was part of the $14.12 now sitting in Zac's pocket.

. . . . . . . . .. . . . .

The drive passed quickly enough and soon the old car rounded the last turn into the parking lot. The store was a Super Target. It seemed strange how large the town had gotten in the last two years. There were a number of grocery stores along with a Walmart and now this huge beast. Norma shopped here for a number of reasons. However, the main one was that it had everything she needed for this trip and she had learned her way around it quite we. Norma parked her car in the parking lot a ways back next to one of the cart corals. That was the one drawback to coming here. The place was always crowded and close parking was luck of the draw if you caught someone else pulling out. However, it had won her business and she came back week after week to spend her family's hard earned money.

"We're here are you ready to go honey?" Norma asked looking back at Zac. She hoped this trip would go off without a hitch and he would be well behaved so they could get in and out quickly.

Zac looked back at her nodding and he undid his seat belt and opened the door that lead out of the car. The pair exited the vehicle and closed the doors behind them. Norma hit the automatic lock button on her door. She took Zac by the hand and the two of them headed for the store that was a long way back from the front edge of the parking lot. The two of them made their way across the parking lot towards the entrance of the store. Norma stopped several times looking out for traffic and making sure she kept track of Zac in the crowd. The store was one of the two largest in town and Norma and her son were not the only two people who had been contemplating shopping on a Sunday afternoon. It was exceptionally crowded and Zac kept tight hold of his mother's hand as she led the way towards the store.

The pair crossed the final crosswalk and made their way inside through the automatic double sliding doors. A vestibule separated the main part of the store from the outside environment and kept the indoor temperature more precise than only having a direct outer door. Zac's mother guided her son along as his attention shifted to a display right inside the front door as he looked around taking in the large sized sales area before continuing. The store was large and well stocked. It carried a huge variety of goods, everything from food, to clothing, plasma televisions and everything in between. Zac's mother drew him forward not wanting this to take the whole day up. She has quite a bit to do and the sooner she got started, the sooner she would get home.

"How about we pick out a cart and get stated." Norma spoke as she lead her son towards the piles of carts located just in front of the front entrance. There were a couple of different types to choose from. Norma looked around and saw what she was looking for almost at once. However, the choice would rest with Zac more than her.

"Zac do you want to ride or walk?" She asked looking down at her son and pointing towards the first option over the second.

Zac followed his mother's gaze and responded almost immediately. "I'll ride I guess if you don't mind pushing me."

Norma nodded and began to lead Zac towards the shopping cart they had agreed on. Zac was ten and weighted a little over 60 pounds. He was much to big for the seat in a normal shopping cart. He had tried one out a few months ago on another shopping trip. He was heavy enough that his mother had a difficult time lifting him off the ground to get him into the cart. Once inside the seat, he was pretty crammed in and once he had gotten his legs through the front two holes he pretty much got stuck. It took a good effort both on the part of his mother and his eldest brother who had both been with him to extract him from the cart a few minutes later. That wasn't quite what his mother had in mind this afternoon.

The pair arrived at the cart and Zac seated himself on the right side of the child carrier attachment. It was a large plastic add on that attached to the front of the cart that could easily seat two children. It was called a 'shop-along' The idea was to provide seating for a parent that brought more than one child with them. It added some weight to the cart, but it made it easier to keep track of kids especially younger ones. The carrier could sit two children. One on each side. There was a thin plastic wall that would separate the two children. It was mostly meant for kids between the ages of 3 and 7. The two seats each were equipped with a two part seat belt. A lap belt like a stroller's and a second set of two belts that came down over the child's shoulders and buckled between the legs of the child in front. Together, they formed a five point harness that would keep younger children safely secured to the cart. The carrier increased the cart's child carrying capacity from 1 child to up to 3.

Norma began pushing the cart from behind now that Zac was seated. The Target store was one of only two stores in town that used this type of cart. It had been one of the reasons she had begun shopping here a few years ago. When Emily had been 8 and younger and Zac came along it allowed her to keep track of both of them at the same time and eliminated the argument about who rode in the cart and who walked. Norma now pushed along containing only Zac. He was getting too big for it really, but his small size allowed him to sit. Zac sat quietly staring around the store and held onto the normal push bar on the cart for balance. He wasn't strapped in, however, he was more than old enough that he could ride safely without the seat belts support anyways.

Zac's mother pushed the cart along. It added more weight to her work, but it wasn't all that much. Besides, the child carrier added some copacity to the cart. She could use the empty seat for her purse and pile a few cases of pop on the bottom of it. She had a lot to pay for on this trip and the extra capacity well out weighted having to push the cart and keep an eye on Zac. If he was sitting there she knew where he was. They made their way towards the center of the store and the clothing department. Zac needed a few extra clothes for the coming summer season. He was growing and the passed down garments from Robbie were not enough to meet his needs. He needed a few pair of jean shorts, a new bathing suit, some dress pants and a couple of t-shirts. It was always easier to do this with the child along for the ride. That way if something didn't fit she could just leave it at the store rather than making another run out to return it.

"Zac, we have a lot to try on today. I know you really hate trying on new clothes, but I would appreciate it if you bore with me. If you are good, I run by the toy aisle and you can pick something out up to five dollars or I'll buy you some candy at the check out. Do we have a deal?" Norma asked looking down over top of her son.

"Deal." Zac responded without much thought on the matter. He was going through with this either way, he figured he might as well get the reward out of it. Norma smiled and returned her gaze to where it belonged. She didn't get her youngest to go shopping with her too often any more. Splurging on him was not a big deal once in a while. Besides, if it took some of the headache out of the matter it was money well spent. He was still at the age where a candy bar would appease him quite a bit. If Robbie wanted something it usually ran more than 5 dollars any more.

Any way that Norma looked at it, the clothes shopping would be the longest part of her day here. She might as well get it out of the way. Besides she couldn't have ice cream melting in the cart while Zac tried on clothes. The clothing department was just ahead of them. She flowed through it to the boys section. Norma parked the cart where it was and began looking through the racks trying to pick out what she wanted Zac to try on. She dug around finding things in his size and what she needed to fulfill his needs. The process took about 15 minute or so to sort through everything. Zac just sat and waited where he was. He had no reason or interest to interfere in his mother's selections. She would pick stuff out, he would try it on, and what fit they would by it was as simple as that. He had promised good behavior and was doing his best to abide by it. He remained seated because it was the easiest way to fight the temptation to do something stupid and blow his chances at the promised reward.

Norma made the last of her selections and returned to the cart. She gestured for Zac to get up. His mother was holding a large pile of clothing. Zac got up and followed his mother towards the changing rooms that were located in the middle of the section between the boy's and girls clothing sections. There was an attendant there and Norma stopped at the desk in front of her informing the employee of her intentions. The woman looked down at the large pile of clothes and told her she could only take 2 or 3 articles in with her at at time. Norma nodded and left most of the pile on the desk and decided to have Zac start with the shorts and work his way through the pile.

Norma led Zac back down one of the hallways towards the actual stalls where you could try something on to see if it fit. She made a sweep to check for other occupants. The area was clear and they had it all to themselves. She selected the booth closest to the entrance and handed Zac the first pair of shorts.

"Head on in and get changed. Come out when you're done and I will see how they fit. You're old enough you want to change on your own I assume. I'll just wait out here. Yell if you need anything." Norma explained her plan for getting through the process to her son.

Zac responded that he would follow the instructions and move on. He took the first pair of shorts and headed into the booth to change. The whole process took about 2 minutes and Zac reappeared wearing the new pair of shorts. He came down the short hallway to where his mother was standing. She circled her son a few times tugging on the waist band of the shorts and asking him if they fit comfortably. She made several other comments and questions and Zac responded as best he could. She nodded in approval and told her son that they would be buying the shorts. Zac departed with another garment. To try on.

This is getting a lot longer than I anticipated, I am going to break this part of the story here and continue with it later on. I know that it seems like a lot, but I am going to be writing this story for a while and I want to define the characters and some of the transitions that are about to take place. Please bear with me.

I am moving this story along hopefully I will get through it with this part. Here we go.

Zac exited the fitting room a second time and showed his mother the second pair of shorts she had picked out for him to try on. She repeated the process that she had with the first one. It took a minute or two and she sent him back to the changing room for his third trip. The process began to form a cycle. Zac would change. His mother would inspect the garment for a fit and the possibility of more growth and she would send him on the net item to try out. It took Zac a few minutes to change each time and she stood waiting for him to return in the mean time she had a conversation with the sales lady sitting at the counter. Both of them were bored and it was a pleasantry the clerk offered.

"You're luck to have your son put up with so much. Most kids I see come through here, after two or three outfits that's it." The clerk comment watching Zac progress through the pile.

"Yeah, this is unusual for him. Zac, he is my youngest at 10 years old. Normally he hates trying on clothes, but I promised him a trip to the toy aisle if we got through this without a fuss. So far so good." Norma commented back.

"He is getting big for his age. They grow up fast don't they?" The clerk replied. Norma nodded again as Zac came out and she stopped the conversation to inspect another outfit. She decided not to buy it because it was a little too small. She sent him back on another errand with another thing to try on.

"Yeah, he is growing up fast, but he is still my baby. He is still a child at heart. Thankfully I don't have to get him new clothes all the time, I hand down a lot from his two siblings. He even has a couple of nightgowns from my 12 year old that he wears to bed from time to time. Although, last night he was rather cold, I was really surprised he wore his bathrobe to bed and it's not all that cold outside right now. "

The conversation continued. Zac made a few more trips in and out changing what he was wearing as he went. He caught part of his mother's conversation, but not paying it any mind. His focus was on the next likely stop, the toy aisle and not on the matter at hand. He came out from the changing room trying on a new shirt his mother had picked out for him. However, he had to wait a minute for her to return from looking at a nearby rack. She gave it a quick inspection and added it to the yes pile before handing him the final shirt. Then they parted ways. Zac made a quick dash for the changing room. He wanted to finish before his mother could find something else for him to try on. He made the best time that he could and darted back out of the changing room to show his mother the last shirt and be done with the matter.

She was standing at the rack when he emerged and took something off of it tucking it neatly under her arm. She glanced down at her son looking at the t-shirt. It looked a little big, but it would do. She smiled telling Zac that they would get it as well. Then she brought his attention to the garment she was holding.

"Zac, I know I told you that shirt would be the last one, but would you mind trying this on. It's on clearance for 4 bucks and after last night I might consider getting it for you if it fits." Norma explained. Zac just stood there for a moment not quite sure how to respond. He just shrugged after a moment and took the garment from his mother. Then he darted back off into the changing room. The item in question was a blanket sleeper that his mother had pulled off the rack. Those fleece one piece zip up pajamas with built in feet and long sleeves. He stripped down to his underwear in the privacy of the dressing room and slid it on before doing up the zipper. They were nothing new to him. He had worn them when he was younger, although he had not owned a pair of them since he was older than 5.

It was strange to see a set in his size. He zipped them up and took a look at himself in the mirror. Other than a set from his grandmother, all the pj's he owned were either his brother's or sister's before his time. There were enough that he really didn't need anything new. Still, they were comfortable and fit well. He exited the changing room and gave his mother a quick showing. He got a few smiles from her and the clerk as they examined him.

"They fit you pretty good and you still have a little room to grow. What do you think, do you want them?" His mother asked.

"Yeah, definitely." Zac responded. "Can I go change now and are we done?" Zac asked looking at his mother who responded "Yes." to both questions. Zac departed their company and Norma gathered up the rest of the garments, well at least the ones she was going to purchase. The clerk was kind enough to offer to return the others to shelf for her and thanked Norma for her business. It took Zac another 5 minute to change out of the sleep suit and back into his normal clothes. He folded it up under one arm and exited the fitting rooms for the last time. He found his mother waiting for him back at the cart when he arrived. The cart had moved locations and was now stationed by the rack where his mother had found the pajamas.

The cart now continued the clothing that Zac's mother had picked out for him. He handed the last thing he had tried on to his mother and climbed back up onto the cart standing and then sitting. Normal placed the sleep suit in the cart and threw two more of them down on top of them. The first one had an outer space print on it and the second was pink with a teddy bear print. Zac looked down excited with the first set and perplexed by the second. He shot his mother a quick look before sitting down.

"They are normally 20 dollars a set Zac, but since it's going towards Summer the store marked them down to 3.99 each to get rid of them. At that price, I thought I might as well get you two of them and I grabbed this one for your sister. I don't know if it will fit her or if she would even wear it. But it probably won't be here when I bring her shopping next week. Besides, the worst case scenario means you will have some pink ones when you get a year older. Besides no one besides me and your siblings ever see you in your pajamas anyways. " Norma explained trying to clear up the confusion that Zac was showing. Zac just laughed at the though of himself in a pink set of winter jammies.

With the business in the clothing department concluded, Normal guided the car towards their next destination. The toy section was on the way to the grocery part of the store and she had not forgotten her promise to Zac. She led him up and down 3 or 4 aisles of toys giving him time to see what there was and find something to pick out. She had set a five dollar limit, but was hoping that Zac would pick something a little cheaper than it. Zac looked up and down the toy aisle. A wide variety of items caught his eye. However, most of them were outside of his price range even if he added his own money to his mother's offer. It was going to be a difficult choice, his mother didn't want to wait all day for him and he needed to pick something before he lost the right to pick. However, as they rounded the fifth toy aisle a solution presented itself to both his surprise and his mother's.

"I want that!" Zac exclaimed pointed at something on the wall excitedly. Norma looked up at her son's selection and now it was her turn to look back at him a little perplexed.

"You want handcuffs?" his mother asked a little surprised. She was verbally confirming that she was not mistaken at what her son was pointing at on the wall. Zac nodded quickly. She took the package from the was and examined it. It was just a toy pair of metal handcuffs. They had two keys and the little safety release switches on the sides. She checked the price tag in the corner and was happy to find that it was only a buck and a half. Normal quickly deposited the item into the shopping cart without any more thought on the matter. She was anxious to move on and decided to do so before Zac changed his mind to something more expensive.

With the clothing and Zac's little gift out of the way, it was time to move onto the more important shopping. Namely the groceries and why they had come in the first place. Norma rounded toward the shopping side of the store. Norma made her was towards the food now. She had no shopping list with her. Everything was committed to memory. She had this part of the shopping trip down to a science. She new the order she would make the rounds in, where everything was, what coupons she had and already was running up the total bill in her head. Like so many mothers, this was her domain and she ruled it with a iron fist. The first stop was the deli. It didn't matter what time of the afternoon she reached it, it would be busy. There was no getting around waiting in line there so, she figured she should just get it out of the way.

Norma pulled the cart up to counter and got in line behind the 7 other people waiting there. The counter had 2 clerks running it with a third working in back. Still, it would be a good wait. Zac sat staring around the department and fidgeting a little. The deli really didn't interest him the way the rest of the store did. Norma began making conversation with the other woman standing in front of her in line to help pass the time. The two women talked while Zac sat quietly looking for something to pass the time. He hated waiting.

The handcuffs had caught his eye. While they would be easy to escape from, they would offer a way to try tying his own hands and his parents wouldn't even catch onto the little experiment. He wished he had them to play with now, but he couldn't open them until his mother paid for them in the first place. Zac shifted around in the seat. He still fit OK in it, but in a year or two he would be too big for it. He used one arm to lever some of his weight upwards along with his legs. This way, he could rise off the seat a little without standing all the way up. When he had sat back down after the clothing expedition he had accidentally sat down on half the lap seat belt he used his other hand to pull it out from underneath him to get more comfortable. He slid it off to one side and let it hang where gravity drew it towards.

It dangled off the inside of the divider between the two seats and came to rest on his leg. Zac let it sit there for the next two minutes and continued to look around the deli. The line moved and so did he and his mother. Two of the people at the counter were attended to and the next two were up next. The the cart moved, the seat belt swung forward like a pendulum and came back bumping Zac in the leg. Over the course of his mother moving the cart forward 5 feet, it repeat twice more before Zac caught hold of it with his hand. He lifted it up straight and held it out in front of him trying to keep it from bumping him again. However, this presented him with a new problem to solve. He addressed it more out of boredom than necessity.

Zac normally used both hands to steady himself while the cart was moving. However, holding half the seat belt require one of his hands to be occupied. Sitting on it had prevented this the first two legs of the trip, but now he wanted a different solution. He tried setting it on his lap and then returning both hands to the bar in front of him. However, when his mother moved the cart again a minute later it slid off and bumped him in the leg again. When he knew the cart was stationary once again, he took hold of it with one hand and mulled the problem over again. A moment later a solution presented itself almost immediately. Zac was surprised he hadn't thought of it before.

He released his other hand from the push bar on the front of the cart and reached off to the outside of the seat. He took hold of the second half of the seat belt and attempted to simply fasten it. Unfortunately, the two ends of the belt were a few inches short. Zac looked down a realized that the lap belt was adjustable by a slide on the outer belt. He let out another inch and a half of slack and that was just enough to allow for the 'click' sound as it buckled. The line moved again unexpectedly for Zac. He wasn't able to get his hands up on the bar in time to steady himself. The young boy slid forward as his top half tiled with the forward motion. However, the lap belt was fastened now and kept him from being dislodged from the seat.

Norma caught sight of her son's movement although it ended without any incident. "You need to hold on Zac if you are not strapped in. Otherwise you'll fly forward when I push the cart." She commented.

"I know mom. I was just trying to adjust the seat belt so it would fit. I'm sorry I'll be sure to hang on from now on." Zac explained.

Norma looked down and nodded. "I am sorry too I didn't realize you wanted the seat belt. You are a little old for it and you used to complain when I made you wear it when you were 7. Do you want the shoulder straps too?" She asked looking down at Zac.

Zac took a minute not quite sure how to respond to the question. His original plan was just to buckle the lap belt to keep it from bumping into his leg. He really didn't want to wear it in the first place, but it was better to have it fastened than annoying him. He was caught in another lie trying to keep from getting in trouble. Zac knew the answer to her question, but he was trying to figure out what the best response would be. He finally cleared his throat and let out a reply.

"No, this is fine, besides I am too tall the woundn't even fit me if I wanted them to anyway." He replied looking up at his mom. "I just thought it would be more comfortable to wear the seat belt than sit on it." He finished.

Norma let the matter drop for a moment and shifted her attention back to where it was most needed. Well, it was always focused on her children when she could spare it. However, she was only one person away from the front of the line. The clerk finished with the woman in front of her and called "Next." out followed by a polite greeting and a request for what services she could provide Norma with. Zac's mother moved the cart forward again. Zac had one hand on the cart's push bar and managed to brace himself better than the last cart movement this time, but he still shifted forward a few inches. Something that didn't go unnoticed by his mother. Norma gave the clerk her order rattling it all off and telling her she should probably write it down. The order was long and contained 11 different meats and cheese that needed to be cut and each weighed. Her family had a diverse pallet and she had to prepare quite a few lunches throughout the week.

The clerk nodded behind the counter and went to work immediately. Zac watched as the woman behind the counter took a large slab of roast beef and loaded it into the slicer. Norma watched and waited looking down at her son. She was used to the routine, it would take a good 10 to 12 minutes to fill her order. The clerk knew her by name and was efficient at her requests by now, but still there were some things that you could not rush. While the slicer was running, she shifted her attention down to Zac who was watching it intensely. Norma figured she had a few minutes to kill anyways. She reached down and began to fiddle with the top half of the seat belt that was situated behind Zac's position. There were to slides on it that could be used to adjust the length of the shoulder straps. Norma began extending them as far as they would go.

Zac had his hands braced against the bar on the normal shopping cart for balance when the double strap fell loosely across his upper body. He looked up at his mother as she was reaching around the front of him. Norma reached around her son and took hold of the short strap that sat on the front of the child carrier. The two shoulder straps came down at in a V-shape and converged to a point with a single buckle. Norma took hold of the short strap and pulled it upwards and attempted to buckle it. There a quick "click" and the two end of the shoulder belts buckled securely to the lead between Zac's legs. Norma stood up and back away for a second. Zac's shoulders were a few inches above the top of the seat, but there was still enough slack for the shoulder belts to fasten securely. Norma reached up top again and adjusted the sliders on the shoulder belts slightly taking about an inch and half of slack out of each of them for a slightly snugger fit. Zac just sat there unmoving.

"You're order is complete, is there anything else I can do you?" The deli Clerk asked looking over at Zac's mother.

"No, that should do it thanks a lot. Have a nice day." Norma said as she took the items from the clerk and placed them with the rest of her stuff in the car. Once that was finally complete, she began moving forward with the cart and Zac as well. Norma made her way quickly through the large store. She didn't carry a shopping list any more. She knew exactly what she needed and where all of it was. She had been shopping here for the last 4 years and had begun to know the place pretty well. The items she purchased from week to week were rather similar in assortment with a few variation based on her plans for the evening meals throughout the week.

She rounded several sections collecting the dry goods and other nonperishable items first and loading the cart up with them. Then, she made her way around to collect produce and the cold items last. Zac just sat there and watch as everything buzzed by him so quickly. He wasn't sure how his mother got everything into the shopping cart. He thought it was full after they were done clothes shopping let alone a weeks worth of groceries. Still, Norma was an expert and she made quick work of it. Zac just sat back in the seat. He was strapped down quite securely by the seat belt that his mother and he had placed on him. He could shift around a little bit from side to side, but for the most part he was tethered rather tightly. It was a strange way to spend an afternoon and one that he had not counted on at all.

A month earlier, if his mother hand suggested that he wear the seat belts on a shopping cart like this, it would have met with quite a bit of protest from the young man. He would fight it and claim he was too old and that they were for babies. However, today he just sat their quietly almost accepting his fate as it came. He didn't let it bother him, in fact it really was no big deal to Zac. He just sat there as his mother moved the cart along with his hands folded neatly on his lap. The straps secured him to the cart quite well. This freed up his hands from having to hold onto the push bar on the grocery cart for support. It was relaxing just sitting there as his mother pushed the cart along. The straps were snug, but not uncomfortable. He felt quite safe the way he was and didn't impose on it.

The whole of the trip flew by after Zac's mother picked up the pace. Zac found himself so lost in thought that the world around him was not apparent as it usually was. Before he knew it, his mother had thrown the last beef roast into the cart and they were beginning to make their way towards the front of the store. Zac was still looking around taking in the sights as they left the grocery part of the store and heading to the checkouts. They were going past a few sections on their way up from when something caught Zac's eye. He pointed at one of the end displays on an isle and began to squirm around in the straps on the cart. This was enough to bring Norma to stop the cart for a moment and see what her son was placing such importance on.

"What is it now Zac?" Norma asked looking down at her son from above. The cart was now resting outside of the sporting goods section of the store. Norma shifted her gaze across the end cap of the isle they had stopped in front of. It was full of soccer balls, a sport that Zac had never played or showed any real interest in before.

"No, not that one, back one isle" Zac comment following his mother's gaze. Norma turned her head back as her son’s voice had directed her. On the end of it was a display of helmets and skateboards set up. "I was wondering if why we were here if I could get some knee pads? You know for when I go skating?" Norma looked down at Zac with a real surprised look on her face.

"You haven't worn knee pads when you skate since you were 5 years old. Besides, remember you told me that you were a amazing skater now and didn't need safety stuff any more?" Norma commented at her son's request. It had come out of the blue, she really didn't know where this was coming from.

"I fell yesterday and cut my knee pretty bad remember?" Zac indicated pointing down at where he had gained a scratch from the day before. "I was thinking that maybe I am not as good of a skate as I thought I was and if I had knee pads on I wouldn't have gotten cut. So, can we get some mom?" Zac pleaded looking up at his mother.

"Let's see what they have and how much they are Zac." Norma commented and turned down the isle where the display was on the end. The isle she turned down as set aside for wheeled sports mostly. It had a collection of pads, helmets, skates and skateboards lined up trying to attract a sale from a passing customer. Norma began to browse the section with a number of thoughts running threw her head. This was a stupid idea. If she bought the knee pads for Zac, he would take them home, wear them 3 or 4 times and then they would end up under his bed for the rest of eternity. On the other hand that might not be the conclusion this came to either. Zac rarely asked for something that he didn't plan on using. He also had a point and he loved skating and she didn't want to see him give it up not feeling safe about doing it. She juggled the two sides back and fourth in her head reserving her judgment to be determined by what this was going to cost her.

There were quite a few helmets and skateboard to choose from. However, the pads were a little more limited in selection. In fact, the whole section spanned about 10 feet horizontally of shelf space and about the same in height. Most of the pads were for skateboarding. Also the majority were sized either for adults or had Dora or barbie on them to make them attractive for children between 2 and 5. After looking for a minute or two, the only sets that were just knee pads, were for adults only. In total there were about 40 items to sift through. Norma gave the rack a look over trying to see what was available. After minute or two of sifting, she found something that looked suitable.

She lifted a package off the wall and looked it over. It was a combo pack with wrist, knee and elbow pads all sized for a youth. They were a dull gray color with a hard black plastic shell over the joint. The package stated they were intended for skateboarding, but she figured they would work just as well for roller skating. She looked back down trying to find a price. A red tag above them had caught her eye as they were marked clearance. The total expenditure was less than 9 bucks. She showed them to Zac.

"What do you think? Will these work for what you want?" Norma asked handing the package over to her son.

Zac examined the package and just shrugged. They weren't anything special like the first pad set he had with Pokemon characters on them. However, they were what he had asked for and that was good enough. "Yeah, can we get them?" He asked looking back up at his mother.

"Only if you promise you will use them. I don't want them to end up on the floor of your room for me to trip over. Do we understand?" Norma asked drawing the conversation to a close.

Zac nodded, "I promise." He shot out without much of a thought on the matter. Norma took the skating pads and threw them in the shopping cart on top of the rest of the stuff. She needed to get out of the store soon. She had frozen food starting to defrost in the cart. The two made their way towards the front entrance. Unfortunately, there were no short lines so, Norma just picked one and hopped in the rear of it. Zac spent the first 3 minutes of the wait just sitting quietly. Then, he seemed to get bored with it and began reaching up towards the shopping cart trying to retrieve something. However, the seat belts held him in place and prevented him from getting up. Norma watched her son struggle and begin to reach for the buckle that secured him to the seat. She stopped him and asked him what he wanted.

Zac told her and she handed him the package with the skating pads so that he could examine them more closely. Mostly, she was happy with the situation where she had him. Placating him was simple enough. Zac took the package and reseated himself content to remain how he was for the moment. Their total wait in line was about 12 minute or so. Norma asked the cashier of she could have a bag of ice brought over and added to the items that Zac and her were purchasing. It was done and she began unloading the cart as quickly as she could while the clerk totaled the order. The last item Norma took was the pads back from Zac and she handed it up to the cashier so it could be added to the final total. The clerk gave her the total for her purchase and Norma paid for it.

She began to take her parcels from the end of the counter and load them back into the shopping cart. Zac just sat by with a bored look on his face. When the errand was done. Norma pushed Zac, the cart with all the merchandise and the bag of ice out the front door of the store and headed back to her car. She parked the cart behind her Buick and unbuckled Zac from his perch. He got up eagerly and began to help his mother load the groceries into the car. Well, he loaded up the clothes, dry goods and other items. Norma piled the cold items and lunch meats into a cooler situated in the trunk of the car and broke the bag of ice open over top of the cold items. She was relieved to have them finally on ice for the trip home. It had been a busy day so far and she was eager to get home. In all she had spent a small fortune on the food and the half a dozen new outfits for Zac. That and the few extras that she had gotten for her son as well. However, he had been well behaved and tolerant of her plans for the day. A few extra dollars wouldn't hurt anything.

She looked around trying to locate Zac now that she had finally emptied the cart. She found him quickly. Zac was already sitting in the rear seat of the car with his seat belt fastened across his shoulder and lap. Norma took a moment and placed the shopping cart back in the cart coral 3 space down from where they parked and entered the car herself. She got situated and started up the engine. She turned her head backwards so she could see to back the vehicle out of the parking space. As she did, she caught a quick glimpse of Zac in the back seat of the car. He was sitting there with his arms folded behind his back. He shifted back and fourth in the seat a little bit trying to get comfortable.

Norma backed the car out of the space and put it in drive. "Zac, honey what are you doing ?" She asked glancing back again.

"Nothing." He replied. "Just playing with the toy handcuffs. I wanted to try them out. I guess I am under arrest aren't I." Norma smiled. She had forgotten about the toy handcuffs she had bought for Zac a while earlier. He must have found them when he had put all the bags in the car. It amazed her how well her son could locate something if he wanted it. She let the matter go without much thought.

"Mom, can I go over and play with Tammy tomorrow?" Zac asked and continued with another question before giving Norma a chance to answer. "Her mom said I could come back and I like her. Do you think I could go over tomorrow?" He repeated.

"I don't know honey, usually you need more notice than that to go over to somebodies house. You might be able to go over next weekend, but I doubt that you can after school sometime this week. There just isn't enough time, I have to cook dinner and I couldn't take you over and pick you up. I will give her a call when we get home and see if we can make an arrangement for you to go over next Saturday maybe." Norma replied not knowing what else to say.

Zac nodded not happy with his mother's answer, but satisfied with it. He was old enough to understand the way the world worked. He had about a 40 minute ride home from school on the bus. That meant he would get home a little before 4:00 in the afternoon. Dinner was usually around a little after 6:00 at his house and his mother prepared the meals. So, she didn't have time to drive him over right after he got home from school. The trip over the previous day had taken him about 30 or 40 minutes on foot. So, by the time he got home and walked over it would be time to come back almost. Still, his mother had promised to call and see about the next weekend. At least she didn't say no. It was nice having a kid around his own age to play with that wasn't his sister. Even if she was a year younger.

The car pulled away with the mother and Son locked in a rather lengthy conversation. The afternoon was wearing on and soon they would be home and their thoughts would be focused on the evening meal and the other events of the day. Zac had a lot on his mind and Norma had a lot on her plate. She had gotten quite a bit done that day. However, neither of them really knew what fate had ahead of them.

More to come

I am continuing on with the story.

The old Buick pulled into the driveway and Norma parked it at the end of the sidewalk. They had a lot to carry in and this was as close as she could park the car. Zac was still seated in the back seat of the car. He had made an adjustment to the position of his hands a few minutes after they had left the store. Sitting in the back seat with them behind his back was uncomfortable so he switched the handcuffs to his front. Now that the had arrived home, he needed to get out of his seat belt, which proved problematic since he had one arm on each side of it.

Zac unlocked his left wrist and worked his hands around the shoulder strap without much trouble. The operation was simple enough. The handcuffs were only a toy and had the little safety switches on the sides. They were easy to get in or out of. He unbuckled his seat belt and then reapplied the handcuff to his left wrist. Zac opened the door to the car slowly and got out. The handcuffs on his wrist made the task a little more difficult. However, it was manageable, it just took more focus and concentration to complete than it normally would without them. Norma was busy gathering bags from the back trunk of the car. Zac circled around to the rear.

"Here Zac, take a few of these." Norma indicated handing 3 of the plastic bags in her son's direction. Zac did his best to take hold of them, but being handcuffed hampered his efforts significantly. He could only collect 1 of the bags rather than the 3 his mother intended for him.

"You really should take those off while we unload the groceries and the rest of the stuff." She commented looking down at the difficulty that Zac was having with the whole situation.

"No, I want to leave them on. I will just have to take the bags in one at a time mom. I will have to make lots of trips." Zac replied offering a counter to his mother's suggestion. Norma just rolled her eyes back in her head. Nothing in the car was going to spoil outside of the contents of the cooler. In total they had around 15 bags plus the cooler that needed to make it's way into the house. Norma would win the argument if she wanted to, but she chose not to expend the effort on the matter. Zac's mother returned the other two bags to the trunk of the car and lifted the cooler out. It was customary for her children to unload the groceries from the vehicle and she would put them away in the kitchen.

Norma lead the way back towards the house with the large heavy cooler drawn tight to her chest. The woman was strong from her years of living on the farm and the cooler was well within her ability to carry. She moved at a slow and measured pace back towards the house. Zac followed keeping behind her, not wanting to cause her any difficulty. The ice chest probably weight 50 or 60 pounds all loaded up, and he didn't relish the thought of it being dropped on him. Instead he followed behind his mother at a more measured pace carrying the one bag in front of him in both of his cuffed hands. The pair made their way up the sidewalk and into the house. Zac stepped ahead of his mother right before the porch so that he could open the door for her. Even handcuffed, he had an easier time with the door than she would have.

Norma lead the way inside and hefted the large cooler onto the kitchen table. Zac followed and deposited the single bag next to it. His mother opened the ice chest and began the process of putting the cold items away in the freezer and refrigerator. Zac bounded out the door and began his second trip back to the car for more parcels. Zac sprinted down the sidewalk and retrieved a second back and made the return run with it. The young boy bounded up the steps and back into the kitchen. Almost as fast as he came, he was out the door again. It was an interesting experience for him to say the least.

Zac spent the next 10 minute or so testing the changes that being handcuffed in front added to a simple everyday task. His legs lacked any restraint, and he managed to move almost as fast as he normally did. However, having his hands together in front of him altered his balance pattern an little and he stumbled more than once bounding down the sidewalk towards the driveway. He repeated the process gathering a new bag from the Buick every time he made the round trip. Everything flowed well for him as he made his way along. Well, it continued to go well until after he was coming out from his 9th delivery into the house. He sprinted forward a little too far and his left heel caught the edge of the top porch step rather than a solid level of footing. When his right foot lifted off the ground, he lost his footing all together and flew forward very rapidly. His cuffed hands prevented him from being able to correct his balance and avoid the fall.

Zac's forward momentum propelled him a good distance laterally as he descended from the top height of the steps. He cleared the stair and most of the sidewalk. He landed with a hard thud in the grass across the sidewalk from the bottom of the porch steps. Zac landed on his side with his arms upward bracing forward trying to protect his head. He laid there for a second catching his breath and trying to access the damage he sustained from the fall. He tried moving all of his limbs. They were a little sore, but everything still seemed to work. The young boy planted his cuffed hands and used them to lever himself into a sitting position. He looked down and then slid up each of his pant legs one at a time. He was looking for blood or any open wound. He was relieved to find none on his person after the fall.

The fall did little to Zac other than knock the wind out of him. He would have a sore left shoulder for the next hour or so, but that was the extent of his injuries. He righted himself and stood up not bothering to remove the handcuffs. He had just learned a valuable lesson that running with his hands tied was not a good idea at all. He continued his pursuit of unloading the car much more cautious in his movements. Zac walked instead of running and kept his eyes focused on where he placed his feet. The process slowed the unloading to a crawl, but it insured that he didn't repeat the mistake. Zac retrieved another bag and made his way back to the kitchen with it. He half expected his mother to be mad and give him a lecture about the obvious dangers of his chosen course of action.

However, that was not the actual case in the matter. Norma's attention was divided between 3 activities and she had not noticed Zac's little trip off the porch. She was preheating the stove for dinner that evening, putting the groceries away and talking into a phone that was cradled against the side of her head. She held the phone in place by tilting her head to keep it tight against her shoulder. This left both of her hands free to continue working. Norma was no stranger to multitasking, but even she had limits on how far her attention could be divided. Zac spent the next few minutes collecting the remaining few bags from the back of the car and depositing each of them in turn on the kitchen table. His mother continued with her activities as well. When Zac had completed the final trip, he waved at his mother. She hated being interrupted on the phone and simply departed for his basement bed room with his hands still cuffed together.

Once he was through the basement door, Zac began to make his way down the basement steps. He was slow and careful taking each step one at a time and holding onto the side railing with his cuffed hands for balance. His trip off the porch had been mixed luck. A trip down the basement stairs would not likely end as well for him. After about 5 minutes, Zac finally reached the bottom of the steps and made his way over to his room. He opened the door and closed it behind him before making his way over to his bed. Zac kicked off his shoes and climbed up onto the bed. Then, he worked himself backwards towards the head of the bed and seated himself cross legged. Finally, Zac released the cuff around his right wrist separating his hands. Following that, the young boy maneuvered his arms around to behind his back and locked his wrist back together again like they had first been in the car.

Zac sat there quietly for quite a while now the handcuffs were the way that he wanted them to be. It wasn't like he was really tied up, since he could open the cuffs any time he wanted to. However, it was the closest thing that I could find to the real thing. He didn't have any rope to tie himself up with at the moment. There was plenty of it lying around the farm in various places, but he would be hard pressed for an excuse to collect some and bring it to his room. Also, even if he managed to get rope down here without anyone finding out about it, he couldn't tie his own hands up. Well, at least not any better than the toy hand cuffs would.

Zac sat for a good 15 minute trying to move around with the handcuffs on. It was an interesting feeling having his hands shackled behind his back. He really couldn't do all that much with his hands restrained the way that they were. He could sit there well enough, and he could still move his legs all he wanted, but with his hands locked together behind his back like that, his options for things to do was really limited. Zac sat and looked around the room for a while. He was beginning to get rather bored with the whole idea. His main goal in trying all this was to understand what Tammy saw in it. However, so far all his experimentation had yielded was nothing really interesting or important for that matter. So, the young boy sat with the cuffs on his wrist a while longer. He tried moving his arms around behind his back and squirmed a little bit seeing how far he could move them without taking off the handcuffs.

He found he could move his arms up and down behind his back and almost get them around his left side far enough to grab a pillow that was located in front of him on the bed. He had conducted most of these experiments in the car and they had the same results here, except that he could move a little more freely when he didn't have a seat belt on. Still, the restraints were effective at keeping him from moving around much at all. Not that he was really trying anything special. After he had been sitting on the bed for about half an hour, Zac decided to try taking it to the next level or at least trying something else. Zac tried to get up from the bed so that he could try walking around a little more with the cuffs around his wrist. This proved to be more difficult than he thought it would be. First, he tried to stand up on the bed itself. This was a big mistake as without his hands for balance or to brace himself to rise, he quickly fell backwards and landed with a soft thud on the bed.

Zac figured out the next move that he needed to make with a little more effort on his part. He used his hands to push him forward by bracing them against the bed behind his back. The boy scooted forward until he was sitting on the edge of the bed with his legs dangling over it. Zac planted his feet on the floor and tried to get up. This task was also more taxing that what he originally anticipated it to be. He would normally use a hand to lift himself up off the bed, but the toy handcuffs on it was more difficult since he had to rely on his legs to do the work. Still, the answer came quickly enough. He planted his feet on the floor and used his knees to lever himself up into a standing position. Once he was on his feet, Zac tried walking around the room a little and getting a feel for what it was like to walk around with his hands behind his back. It was a different experience than what he thought it would be. Even without anything restraining his legs, he wasn't used to balancing with his arms tied like this. He stumbled a few times, but managed to catch himself.

In all reality, it wasn't all that more difficult than it was learning to roller skate for the first time. Zac had to find his balance and pay attention to what he was doing, but after about 20 minutes of circling around his room, he was getting the hang of it and could walk without the use of his hands. Zac thought about adding his roller skates to the equation, but he quickly put that idea out of his head. There was no way that he should do something like that. He was still new at this, and he didn't want to risk getting hurt. Zac had been playing for around an hour when his mother opened the top of the basement door and yelled down the stairs.

“Zac, dinner time, come on up and make sure you wash up on the way.” She yelled down making her the volume of her voice more than loud enough to ensure that he heard it.

Zac stopped marching around and unlocked his wrist from the handcuffs using the safety switches on the sides. He deposited them on the bed and began making his way towards the restroom at the bottom of the stairs. He stopped to wash his hands there and then made his way upstairs to the dinner table. The rest of the family was already assembled in their places waiting as he arrived and took his seat at the table. Once he was seated, John lead the family in a prayer and they began to eat as Norma served up supper a little earlier than normal. The meal wasn't anything fancy, just hamburgers and hotdogs, but it was filling when it was served with potato chips and coleslaw fresh from the store. Zac waited until his mother placed a plate of food in front of him and dug in.

“Zac, by the way honey, I got a hold of Tammy's mother while I was cooking dinner.” Norma commented. “We talked it over, and I am afraid that there really isn't a time where you can go over to play before next Saturday. They have a lot to unpack, still and we should let them get settled before we go calling on them.”

Zac looked up at his mother with a look of disappointment. However, the only response she got from him was a quick nod. His mother had done as she had promised and the outcome was what it was. His mouth was full and it seemed less practical to respond verbally. He just nodded and resumed eating.

“You can go over next Saturday if you want to though. Sarah would love to have you over again and Tammy would like to get to know you better. You might see her at school tomorrow. You are a year ahead of her, but she is pretty bright for her age. Maybe you will see each other at lunch or recess.” Norma concluded the conversation with a smile.

Zac again nodded and continued eating in silence. The conversation between the mother and her son was not the only one going on at the table. John still had to milk the cows this evening and was trying to recruit Robbie to help him. It was more of a command than a request. His father extended the invitation to his two younger children as well. The task was known to both of them, but not required of them at their age. Well, not yet. Emily didn't care for the cow barn and getting all dirty, she especially hated the smell of the manure in the barn. Zac, on the other hand loved the loved the place, but he had other things on his mind. Both of the younger siblings turned down their father's offer politely. Besides, it would be Zac's bed time soon and he still had to get ready to sleep.

Once dinner was over, Zac excused himself and made his way down the basement steps again. He slipped into the bathroom and went for the shower. It had been a long day and a good shower felt nice. He stood under the falling water for a long time letting it drag the dirt of the day away from him slowly and pull it down the drain. When he was done, he exited the shower, took a towel and dried off. He knotted it around his waist and made his way over to the sink. He reached up and used his hand to clear the steam off of the mirror in front of him. Zac watched as his reflection brushed it's teeth and neatened his hair a little. He went through the normal bed time rituals in the normal fashion as he always did. He took a moment and opened the medicine cabinet and took out a fresh bandage. The wound on his leg was coming along quite well. It had already completely scabbed over and stopped hurting earlier in the day. It would require a few more days to heal, but soon it would be forgotten.

Zac changed the dressing and exited the bathroom making his way towards his bedroom across the basement. It was a cooler night, at least for this time of year. The pavement felt cool and comfortable under his bare feet. He arrived the room and entered it. The light had been left on, a curious thing since he had turned it off when he had gone up to dinner. Zac entered the room cautiously. However, his effort wasn't needed his mother had come down to add a few things to his room and left the light on for him as a courtesy in the least. Over on the bed, the handcuffs were still sitting on his pillow and a few other additions were left sitting on this bed. At the foot of it was the new pack of skating pads that they had purchased earlier in the day. They were still in their original bag and laying on the end of his bed. The other addition to the room were the two new sets of pajamas that his mother had bought for him earlier in the day. They were both neatly folded with the legs tucked underneath and the sleeves folded across the chest of the garment.

He looked down at the two of them. The pajamas were meant for winter, late fall and early spring mostly. Still, it was a cool night and Zac thought he might try one of them out. After all, if he got too hot he could just take them off and change into something else. He grabbed the one with the outer space print on it and undid the zipper on the front of the garment. Zac slid his right leg down into the leg without a zipper and then set his left foot into the pajama foot on the leg with a zipper. With his legs in, he slid his arms into the sleeves out and out the ribbed cuffs at the end by his wrists. Then, he took hold of the zipper and did it up to his chin. The outfit was comfortable and covered Zac's whole body except his hands and head. His feet were wrapped in pajama feet made out of the same fleece as the rest of the outfit. They also had an extra layer on the bottom that was covered with textured stars that provided some grip and helped prevented him from slipping on the floor when he walked.

Zac tried walking around in the new outfit getting a feel for it. It was very soft on the inside and really comfortable. He scooped up the other set with the race car print and slid them into the lower drawer on his dresser. Then, he came back over and lifted up the skating pads that were still sitting on the end of his bed. He looked down at them wondering if he should have had his mother buy them for him. He was having second thought about that decision, but it was a little late now. He decided to let the matter be for the time being and slid the bag with the pads under the foot of his bed next to where his yellow plastic skates sat. Then, Zac crossed the room and turned off the lights. He looked down now that the only light available to him was dim amount coming through the only window the room had. Suddenly, Zac noticed something else. There was another light source in the room, him.

Zac looked down in disbelief. The stars and planets on his pajamas were illuminating against the dark background of the fabric they were on. The outfit was really cool, it glowed in the dark. He gasped heavily and almost ran from the room to show everyone how neat this was. Still, he composed himself and let it go. It was a silly idea in the first place. John and Robbie were still out milking the cows. His mother already knew about it, she had told him about it in the store and it had slipped his mind as it had just been a short one time comment. That left Emily, and she probably wouldn't care about his pajamas glowing in the dark. Zac crossed the room again and sat down on the edge of his bed quietly. He still had some time before he had to go to sleep, but he was burnt out as it was. It had been a long time since he had worn pajamas with built in feet, but they were certainly comfortable.

He wanted to try one more thing. Zac reached under the bed and pulled his roller skates out from under it. He expanded one of them and slid it on doing up the Velcro strap at the rear that held it in place. The skate fit comfortably well over top of the outfit. Zac slid the other one on his other foot and then laid back down on the bed. He didn't bother with his helmet or trying out the new pads. The skates had their wheels locked and he wasn't going to put his feet on the floor anyways. He laid down on his back raising his left knee in the air and planing his food on the bed. He let his right leg extend all the way out. Then, he leaned back and rested his head on his pillow. His head landed on a hard object and caused his some momentarily discomfort. The toy handcuffs were still on his pillow.

Zac picked them up and examined them in front of him in the fading daylight as it slipped through the window. They had been a fun thing to try, but he still wasn't sure how he felt about this whole tie up thing. He like part of it, the feel of how it felt being restricted. Still, with the toy handcuffs, he could take them off whenever he wanted to. If he was really tied up, he wasn't sure he could get free on his own. “Oh well,” Zac thought to himself. He had another whole week before he had to worry about it anyways and besides, he could always just tell Tammy that he didn't want to do it. He leaned back and let the though run its way out of his head. Zac slid the handcuffs under the edge of his bed so that he wouldn't risk laying on them again.

Zac switched positions onto his side again. He was already starting to get warm in the new pajamas. But they were so neat he decided to tough it out and try to fall asleep in them. He took a moment and rubbed his feet against each other catching the Velcro that held the, on on the rear wheel of the opposite skate on both feet. Then, he kick them off and slid them onto the floor without using his hands or even sitting up in the process. It was too warm to sleep with both the blanket sleeper and his covers. Zac turned on his side drawing himself up into a tighter position and closed his eyes. There would be a whole lot more to come in his future. He would just have to wait and see.

I am breaking here and will continue with the story in the future. Stay tune,

You should have a scene where the mother finds out but is okay with it and even tickle tortures him while he's tied hehe

Or it could be for the sister. But it would be better although that happens when he is with his friend.

Gee-menee-willikers!!!!!...What a story!...I went to sleep and dreamed about those footed pajamas...I was tied up hands behind me wearing them and glowing in the dark and muzzled with a bandanna in my mouth being led somewhere in the dark of night and I had to use-it but I couldn't because of the outfit and my hands being tied

SATURDAY

Saturday morning began the way that it always did on the farm for
Norma. She got up a little before 6 and made her way to the bathroom.
Her husband was already gone out to work and more than likely took
Robbie along with him for the morning milking. Today was going to be
a typical Saturday on her end of things. She still had some
reservations about sending Zac over to Tammy's house for the day.
However, her son was insistent on it. Zac had seen Tammy at school a
few short times in passing the previous week. She was a year his
junior and a grade behind him in school because of it. He saw here a
couple of times in passing through the hallway. The only time they
got a chance to meet up and talk was during the second recess of the
day,. The children at his school got two recesses a day. The first
was after their respective lunch hours and the second was towards the
end of the day where each teacher took the children out to play for
around 20 minutes or so. Tammy's class and Zac's shared this time of
the day.

Originally, the plan for the day had been open, but after talking with
Zac, Tammy and he were going to meet up at her house part way through
the morning and do some skating. She had managed to get her skates
unpacked and was eager to join her new friend in his favorite hobby.
Although Zac assumed that Tammy would share a bus route with him.
There was only one bus that came out this far into the country, she
didn't. She either took a different bus, or maybe she teleported to
school. Either way, Zac didn't see her on the school bus. It was
certainly too far to walk, Nearly 20 miles, although his father had
done it barefoot through the snow uphill both ways in his youth. Well
at least his great grandfather had. Zac had relayed all that
information to his mother over the past couple of days in preparation
for the coming of this visit. He had most of the details worked out.

Still, Norma had her concerns with the matter. She slipped out of her
robe and into a hot shower. It was still early and she liked to take
advantage of this small block of time she had to herself before the
family rose and everything got started for the day. Norma took a long
hot shower letting the water slide over her and some of the concerns
that she had flow down the drain at her feet. She was an over
protective mother, she knew that. There was no secret about it.
Still, her children were not 5 any more and as they got older they
would want more independence. There was no getting around that.
Emily already knew about the GPS device in her watch. Zac still hadn't
figured it out, but sooner or later he would. That was certain or
maybe she should just tell him the truth of the matter and have it
over with. He had never fought her about anything she had done to keep
him safe. Even when that meant he was tethered to a tree with a child
harness and 100 feet of rope. It seemed so long ago. where did the
time go as she got older.

Norma stepped out of the shower and began to dry herself off and get
dressed. She had brought clothes in with her as was her custom. She
situated herself in a pair of blue jeans and a comfortable top. It was
getting warmer outside, but things would shape up well enough. Once
she was dressed, Norma made her way towards the lower floor of the
house. She made her way into the kitchen and began getting set up for
the morning. The family's routine was pretty well set. Her husband
would get up a little after 5 and rouse their eldest child to head out
to the barn. It wouldn't be too long before Zac would be joining
Robbie in this task. Oh well, better to let him be a child for
another couple of years if they could. Norma thought to herself.
Robbie was not a farmer, but he needed the money to keep that old
vehicle of his moving. He was quickly making the transition to being
a morning person that was sure enough on the matter.

Norma set out the skillet and opened up the box of bus quick. She
added eggs and water to the mix and set her kitchen mixer on a slow
speed with a 5 minute timer. She was doing pancakes this morning.
Norma was a farmer's wife through and through and she had become quite
skilled at managing her time. The five minutes that the batter was
mixing, she used to her advantage. Norma check the watches, her phone,
and the walkie talkies to make sure they were all charged and in
working order. It wouldn't be long before Zac was up and Emily had to
get up early this morning as well. Her main concern with this visit
wasn't it's nature, it was that Zac was her youngest and she was the
most protective of him. If Robbie wanted to go over to a new friends
house that would be fine. He was old enough to take care of himself
and she stayed out his affairs that did not concern her directly.
However, Zac was only 10 and while she had met Tammy and her mother
twice now, she was still unsure on the matter a little. That was why
Emily was going along with Zac.

Her middle child was not thrilled with the idea of getting up early
and going over to play with 2 younger children, one of them she had
never met. However, a simple promise from her mother had changed her
mind on the matter. She wanted another set of the pajamas that her
mother had brought back with her from their shopping trip the previous
Sunday. Zac had worn a set of his to bed once since they got them.
His room unlike the rest of the house lacked air conditioning. He
found them a little to warm for this time of year. But, he still
managed to make it through the night with them on. Emily on the other
hand fell in love with them the moment she got them. She had been
disheartened two nights ago when her mother had told her she had to
wear something else to bed. It couldn't be helped after 4 days of
wearing, they needed a run through the laundry. She promised to pick
Emily up a second pair if she went along with Zac and kept an eye on
him. Provided the store still had one.

Zac, on the other hand had a more mixed reaction to the items she had
purchased for him. He like the pj's well enough, but said he would
wait until it was cooler out to wear them and found them a home in his
dresser. The handcuffs were a different matter. Norma had seen him
using them several times since they had got home with them the prior
weekend. He had worn them a couple of times in his room after the
initial day and for a hour and a half block while watching television
after school. He had just sat their with his arms behind him and paid
attention to the TV. She dismissed the matter outright, it was just a
child playing with a new toy. The same could not be said for the
skating pads she had purchased for him. Zac had only worn his skates
once for an hour or so after school earlier that week. It was a rainy
afternoon and he spent a good portion of it circling the basement. She
had happened upon him while changing out a load of laundry. He wore
the little yellow and blue plastic skates on his feet and his helmet
on his head. However, the pads were absent from his promise to use
them. She had checked their location the following morning while he
was at school. They were still left unopened under his bed in their
original bag.

Sometimes a mother's instincts are correct. She knew that she would
buy them and they would sit and collect dust. Oh well, she thought
she still had the original receipt sitting around. He wouldn't miss
them, he had never even taken them out of the package. She was taking
Emily shopping for new clothes this weekend. She knew better than to
take two of her children clothes shopping together. All that lead to
was a one waiting and throwing a fit because of it. She would just
collect the skating pads and return them tomorrow and that would be
the end of it. The cut on Zac's let was healing nicely. It would be
back to normal in a few more days and she could put this whole
business behind them. She poured the first batch of batter onto the
skillet and watched and the first pancake took shape before her. Norma
had a flipper in one hand and a plate with a top made of aluminum foil
ready to collect the finished pancakes and keep them warm. The whole
process would only take her about 15 minutes and she cold provide her
family with a hot delicious breakfast.

She recollected her thoughts on the matter. This was a good thing
after all, it would be nice for Zac to have another child his own age
to play with in the area. He had formed a connection with Tammy during
their first meeting and both her mother and Norma could see a
friendship begin to blossom out of the meeting. Norma was making a
friend of her own. She had made the trip over to meet up with her new
neighbor a few days ago. She had been welcomed with a glass of iced
tea and a long warm welcoming conversation. The two of them talked
quite a bit, and had a lot in common especially raising children. She
had another free hour, and called the woman the following day. They
talked for quite a while as well then. Everything seemed well enough
with the matter.

Norma flipped the next pancake as she heard the first sign of movements from her younger children. She knew Zac would be up early this morning. He had been all excited about the visit today. However, the sounds were coming from upstairs rather than down the basement. Emily usually slept later than Zac did, but unless the house was haunted, there was nobody else upstairs to make such a noise. It lasted for a moment or two, then it made it's way towards the top of the stair and began it's decent. The young lady rounded the corner and made her way into the kitchen.

"Good morning Emily. You are up early this morning, may I inquire what all the rush is about?" Norma asked shifting her attention to her daughter and away from the food.

"Good morn Mom. Have you seen my skates anywhere? I haven't used them in since Tracey's party last year and I cannot find them this morning." Emily replied.

Norma turned to reply and looked Emily over. She was not herself at all this morning. Well, she was, but not what Norma expected. It was unusual for Emily to be up this early, and usually she spent as much time as she could in her pajamas especially on the weekends. However, this morning Emily was already up and dressed. The young lady was wearing a white shirt with a pink overall jumper with the skirt stopping just a few inches short of her knees. She was also wearing a set of purple leggins with a white floral print, white socks and a pair of black mary jane flats. Her hair was neatly combed and parted in the middle with a hair band tucked behind her ears. She looked like she was ready for church more than breakfast. Norma put the matter aside and focused on answering her daughter's question.

"I think they are out in the garage dear by the front of the car in the trunk. We still have a few minutes until breakfast, why don't you go out and look while I finish up cooking." Norma explained and returned to her cooking.

Emily didn't respond verbally. She just nodded and made her way out the front door of the house. The screen door opened and closed behind her quickly. Norma noted that she didn't have her pink wrist watch, but she knew where Emily was going and she would be back soon. Emily's mother pulled 3 cakes off the griddle and poured the second to last batch of batter into place. The table was already set, a courtesy that Robbie afforded her before departing for the morning. Soon, the whole family would be gathered around it for breakfast that morning. She didn't have much time to reflect on Emily as she began to hear a familiar thumping sound coming up the stairs. Apparently Zac was not only conscious, but already knew where his skates were unlike his sister. They were on his feet Norma could tell by the racket coming up the basement steps. It was a normal Saturday morning alright.

Zac opened the basement door and stepped out from behind it. He closed it gently and then glided across the room to his normal place at the table in a few short steps. He arrived without a word and just pulled his chair out from the table. The boy seated himself and scooted back in the seat. He allowed his legs to dangle just off the floor. Even with the skates, his feet were still an inch or two short of resting on it. Zac's outfit was nothing special. Blue jeans and a red t-shirt. He was wearing white socks underneath the plastic roller skates since they wouldn't fit over his shoes any more. Norma paid him no mind other than a quick glance. He was sitting at the table with his hands folded on his lap underneath it. He had his signature helmet on, but she decided to spare him his childhood nickname.

The next five minutes passed in silence. Robbie and his father were not back yet, but that didn't stop Norma from serving up breakfast. She had just finished taking the last pancake off of the skillet and placing it on the plate. Well, Zac was here so he might as well eat it while it was hot. She lifted the plate of pancakes and made her way to where her son was seated at the table. She crossed the room and placed two pancakes on Zac's plate, before seating and serving herself. She placed the remaining food in the center of the table. The two of them began to eat.

"Mom, can you pass the syrup?" Zac asked seeing that his mother had finished using it. Norma nodded and handed it across the table. She almost stopped dead staring at her son as he took the bottle from her.

"You're wearing the pads ?" She asked almost in disbelief seeing the wrist guard on her sons hand now that it was above the table.

"Yup, they're a little heavier than the old ones. I guess that makes them safer." Zac replied with a warm smile taking the syrup from his mother. He applied it to his pancakes. That was all Norma got out of him. He spend the remainder of the time they were together eating. Emily rejoined the group shortly after they had started eating. She returned in the house carrying a set of roller blades. She deposited them on the floor by the front door and came around to take her seat at the table. Norma was already dishing up pancakes for her.

"Well, well little crab, it looks like you have some new armor. Where did you get those from?" Emily asked looking at her little brother.

"Mom got them for me when we went." Zac paused to take a bite of pancake and swallow it. "went shopping last Sunday." He finished following up the bite with a drink of milk from his glass.

"Good, little crab." Emily teased tapping the back of Zac's helmet. "We don't want you getting hurt again now do we." Zac just shook his head and kept on eating. Emily sat down and joined the meal. The three family members ate together sharing some light conversation and their plans for the day. When they were finished, Norma came over and went over the plan with both of them. They were expected at Tammy's house in about an hour. She handed the two of them their watches and a she gave Emily a radio. She instructed them to keep track of the time and keep the watches on them at all times. Also, Emily was to check in with her every hour or so over the radio. Emily slipped the watch around her wrist and took the radio in one hand. Zac's watch wouldn't fit over the wrist pads so it ended up in his pocket.

The two children each grabbed a light jacket and put them on over what they were wearing. It was not all that cold outside. It was in the mid 50's for the moment and it would get warmer as the day wore on. Still, Norma didn't want them sick for school and she got no argument from the two children. Before long they were off, Zac skating along and Emily waling with her roller blades in hand. Norma sat down again to wait for the other two members of her family to return from their labors. They were not overdo, just not early as she had hoped they would be.

. . . . . . . . . . .

Emily and Zac began to make their way across the property together. They took their time, it had rained two days earlier and there were puddles along various points on the trail they were taking. Emily didn't want to get wet and Zac with skates on had to be even more careful than his sister. His skating pads were a good fit and had plenty of room to grow. It had been quite a while since the last time he skated with this much gear. It took some adjustments on his part to get used to it again. The knee and elbow pads wrapped around his limbs first with a light mesh, and then tightened with a strap on the top and bottom of the pads. The pads themselves were of a heavy plastic and solid construction. They were skateboarding pads according to the package and a little heavier than the ones he had worn when he was much younger.

The brother and sister seemed and odd pair as they made their way through the woods towards their destination. It was a nice day with a fair amount of cloud cover. The overhead clouds blocked the sun and kept the temperature down to a comfortable level. They both knew the route comfortably and it took them a little under 35 minutes to make the journey over to Tammy's house. The pair arrived with a lot less fanfare than Zac had the week before. It was still early morning and the duo crossed the yard without idle conversation. They were making their way towards the front door when a window on the side of the house opened quite suddenly. A familiar head popped out, well at least it was familiar to Zac from the week before.

"Oh, I wasn't expecting you so soon. I guess your mother wasn't kidding when she told me that you were early risers on that farm of yours. Glad you could make it back Zac, and you must be Emily." Sarah comment yelling at the two out the window trying to make sure her voice bridged the distance between them.

"Hi, . . . ." Zac stopped for a second not being able to recall the name. "Mrs. Tammy's mom." He finished looking back at the woman staring out the window.

"It's nice to meet you, thanks for having us over." Emily interrupted trying to bring a more polite response than her brother's blatant one.

"It's nice to meet you as well. You can call me Sarah if you want. Anyways I will let Tammy know you two are hear. You are welcome to start skating in the driveway. I am sure that she will be right out." Sarah added as she closed the window. "Tammy they're . . . . . " The rest of her words were lost into the silence as she moved out of sound range from the pair.

Zac and Emily took her up on her invitation and made their way down to the driveway. Zac started making a pass towards the length of it almost immediately after they arrived. Emily seated herself on the ground in front of the garage and began to exchange her Mary Janes for the pink roller blades that she has brought from home. She set her mind dividing her attention between what she was doing and keeping an eye on Zac out of her spare focus. She had promised Norma that she would watch out for him, not that he really needed much looking after under these circumstances. Zac was a better skater than she was by far. He Skated more hours in a normal week than she spent eating. He was wearing toy skates which, were much easier to control than her roller blades. Finally, he was padded up like a new skater. The chances of him getting hurt out here were minimal at best. However, the week before had proved otherwise.

She fastened the final strap on the top of her roller blades and rose slowly to her feet. Emily was not as practiced as her brother. It had probably been at least 3 months since the last time she has wheels under her feet. She was a little unstable to say the least on the matter. She bravely let go of the garage wall that she was using for support and glided forward a few steps. The process was easy enough. A few short controlled strokes and using her arms for balance. She made her way down the driveway and passed Zac as he was making his second return trip up. Emily sped her way to the end of it and brought her feet to a T-stop to prevent her from going into the road. There was no traffic this morning, but she didn't want to go too far. Then, she stared another speed run back towards the garage. Zac, skates were easy to manage, but they lacked the speed of Emily's roller blades. She made her was forward and beat Zac back to the garage despite his large head start. Unfortunately, she arrived a little too fast.

"Wach oul!" Tammy yelled as she back stepped out of the way of the oncoming girl. Emily whizzed by here and headed straight into the garage door trying to brace herself for impact with her hands. The girl slammed into it with a soft thud. She bounce off of it and landed two feet back on her bottom. It was a hard landing, but it did little but knock the wind out of her and land Emily on her behind.

"U neet tow sloe don" A young girl stated extending an hand to the fallen Emily. Emily took it and looked up at Tammy for the first time. The young girl wore roller blades similar to Emily's. Tammy was dressed in blue jeans and a light hooded sweatshirt that was solid pink fleece in color. She was as padded up as Zac was and wore a knit winter hat tucked under her helmet. Emily took her hand and accepted the help to her feet.

"What did you say" Emily asked looking at the girl with a curious look. Tammy pulled Emily to her feet and then released her hand. She brought her hand up to her mouth and spit something out into it. It was a clear piece of plastic with a U shape in it.

"Sorry, I said you need to slow down. It can be quite difficult to stop when you are going that fast. You really should be more careful especially since you are not wearing pads or a helmet." Tammy offered in a more audible reply. Zac finished his second lap and stopped to join the girls.

"Wow Tammy, it's good to see you. What's that you have in your hand?" Zac asked looking over at his new friend.

"It's a mouth guard, I wear it when I skate, it protects my teeth if I fall. But, it's really hard to talk while I am wearing one. I am Tammy by the way, who are you?" She asked looking at the new girl.

Zac took a moment and arranged a more proper introduction from the group. Both the girls shook hands and exchanged a quick smile. Emily introduced herself outside of her brother's attempt and there was a look of contentment all around.

"By the way Zac, I like your pads. They look really strong, maybe you won't skin your knee when you fall this time." Tammy offered with a quick smirk. Zac turned beet red with embarrassment from last time recalling the incident where they first met. He let he jest go unchallenged and suggested they see who could skate to the end of the driveway and back the fastest. Emily nodded and Tammy returned the mouth guard to her mouth and proceeded to line up with the brother and sister at a crack in the pavement about 10 feet from the garage. Zac yelled go taking a step forward before shouting it. There could have been some complaint, but the three were two busy to really care about the minute advantage it gave him. The three skaters made their way down the driveway quickly. Despite her age advantage and not being hampered by pads, Emily wasn't the fastest skater. Zac took the longest of the three of them to complete the run. His skates were designed for a toddler learning to skate and the girl's roller blades proved to be superior at least in terms of speed.

Tammy was much faster than the other two could have anticipated. Zac was at a disadvantage, and Emily's lack of practice cost her in the speed. However, she managed to stop short of her first performance and the garage door. Especially after she had lost the race. It was a close margin, but the three of them had fun with it. When it was completed, the three of them continued skating back and fourth the length of the driveway for the better part of the next hour. They raced a few more times and showed off a few tricks. However, Zac's skates didn't allow many skills and Emily was too rusty to do more than shoot the duck or a quick hop. She tried skating backwards, but ended up on her bottom again. Tammy was the most skilled of the group at the current activity and she could literally skate circles around Zac.

Sarah exited the house about 15 minutes after all the commotion began. She had a slice of toast with jelly and a glace of milk. The middle aged woman seated herself on the porch swing and watch the children play in the cooler part of the morning. The fun continued for about an hour and a half. However, the heavens soon parted and brought an end of the fun. The first few drops of rain fell quickly and mad a pitter patter sound. One that echoed in Zac's ear as a droplet bounced off his helmet top. He called out that it was going to rain and the three of them made a quick dash for the house. Emily stopped to rescue her shoes from the side of the garage. The three children skated across the yard and careful made their way up the 4 steps leading up to the front porch to seek shelter under the roof.

"Sorry, it looks like you will have to play inside for a while at least. You can go up to Emily's room. Most of her stuff is unpacked, and you can find something to do then." Sarah commented as the soft pitter patter turned into a steady downpour. "Also, I know your mom lets you at home, but I would appreciate it if you 3 didn't skate in the house." Sarah finished collecting her empty plate and glass before making her way inside.

Emily took her blades off and switch back into her mary jane flats. Emily switched to a pair of red tennis shoes that were sitting on the porch next to where she had changed into her skates an hour earlier. Zac just took his roller skates off and left them next to his sisters. He made his way inside in his stocking feet without much other thought on the matter. Emily lead the way and the two siblings followed. They made their way through the kitchen and living room. Then, they went up the stair and down the hallway past several of the bedrooms. Both Emily and Zac knew their way around the house since it had been the residence of their great grandparents a few years earlier. At the end of the upstairs hallway was another door. This one lead upstairs to the attic of the house. Tammy opened the door and beckon for Zac and Emily to go up. The stairs went up to a third floor that used to be the attic of the house. The threesome made their way up stairs.

The attic was old, but it had been finished and sealed off to make a comfortable living space. Zac's grandparents had used it mostly for storage, but they had been allowed to play up here when they were growing up. However, now that all the junk was removed, the space was quite open and a lot larger than Zac remembered it being. The third floor was almost the size of the rest of the home's main floor. Emily had a bed tucked off in one corner and a few pieces of furniture scattered throughout the room. There was a large area run spread out in an open space across the threshold of the stair opposite where her bed was. There was also a 28 television with a DVD player hooked up on a stand with twin doors underneath it. The final piece of furniture was a table that would comfortably sit four guest at the chairs that sat around it.

"Wow!" Emily commented. "Is all of this yours?"

Tammy nodded, "Yeah, when we came to see the house, I told mom I wanted up here and she surprised me by letting me have it. The table is from our old kitchen. Mom bought another one when me moved here. She said I could have it. I also have a lot of dvds and Wii hooked up over at the TV if you guys want to play that. What would you like to do?" Tammy offered with a warm smile.

Zac looked around almost in disbelief the space was larger than the three rooms his brother, sister and he all owned back home. He had a television, but it was a 13 inch one that didn't always get reception. Tammy really had it nice here. He almost forgot the that Tammy had asked a question of him at the end of her explanation of the place. Tammy repeated the question and Emily broke the silence.

"Do you have any board games up here?" She asked.

Tammy nodded and headed over to her bed and brought a box out from under it. The game read Parcheesi on the box. It was a simple game to play and she opened it trying to set it up. The three some sat down and Emily went over the rules. There were rather simple, you rolled dice and tried to move 4 tokens around a board. You would get sent back to start if you got landed on by another player and it took a 6 to get a guy out onto the board. Doubles got another turn. Zac had never played it before, but it was easy to pick up and pretty soon he was dominating the field. Actually it was more likely he was getting luck with the dice. He got two men home before either of the girls got one all the way around. The game lasted about half an hour before Zac took the win. Afterward he followed it with a simple question of "Now what?"

Sarah had told the trio that she would prepare lunch for them and that Emily and Zac could stay part of the afternoon if they wanted. Norma had checked in twice already over the radio during the course of the day's events and Emily filled her in on what was going on and their plans to stay for a later part of the day. The plans met with Norma's approval and permission. Tammy had discarded her skating equipment one piece at a time during the game when it wasn't her turn. The mouth guard had come out on the way up to allow her an easier line of communication. She suggested that Zac do the same for the sake of comfort, but he had declined the invitation. He explained that he didn't to leave his pads behind by accident since he wasn't used to wearing them yet. Besides, as clumsy as he was we would be better served with them left on. The later of the two statements got a laugh from both the girls.

The trio had another hour before lunch would be ready, and another activity seemed to be the pertinent choice. However, Zac didn't know what to request. Emily had chosen the board game and they had done that, that made it his pick next being the guest. However, he sat silent for quite a while. After five minutes of waiting, Tammy finally offered an idea.

"You know Zac, I have some rope up here. Since we have an hour to kill, would you like to be tied up for real?" She asked. Zac looked back at her with a shocked and hesitant expression. "You told me about the handcuffs at school, and I told you that you should try really being tied sometime. Well, now is as good a time as any."

Zac stared at her without saying much at first. He wasn't quite sure how to respond. "I am not sure that I want to try it yet." He finally offered. His experimentation over the past week had given him some insight into the topic and aroused a curiosity towards the subject. He had discussed the matter with Tammy on recess when she had brought it up at school. However, he quickly changed the subject and brushed it aside.

"Are you sure? I mean I could just do your hands and if you don't like it I would let you go of course." Tammy offered in response to Zac's hesitation on the matter. Zac stared back at her not quite sure how to respond. Tammy was becoming a fast friend and there was a foundation of trust developing between them on the subject. However, he wasn't quite sure how respond and he didn't know how much he could trust her as well with the matter. The idea bounce back and fourth for another couple of exchanges, without Tammy dropping it or Zac accepting it.

"Well, if Zac doesn't want to do it, you can tie me up if you want too." The response was quick and from an unexpected source, namely Emily. "It sound like fun, and I would be willing to let you do it to me if you want to." The older child butted into the conversation without an invitation. Emily had been sitting by watching the exchange oblivious to the source of it's discussion. She was familiar with the handcuffs that Zac had brought home from their his last outing with Norma. Now that she thought about it, everything came together and made a whole lot more sense. Not that Zac had brought the subject up at home in front of her or his parents. Still, it sounded like a neat idea. She had never been tied up before, but it sounded like something to try. At least she could prove she was braver than her little brother on the matter.

"Well, alright then it's settled. If you don't want to try being tied up and Emily does. Then we'll tie her up instead. Wait here I will go get some rope." Tammy stated standing up from where she was sitting on the floor. Emily remained seated where she was and Zac just sat there silent on the matter. He wasn't sure how to respond, but it looked like it was out of his hands. The brother and sister sat there quietly and waited for Tammy to return. It was going to be an interesting morning after all.

I am going to break here for now. This is getting much longer than I anticipated and the tie up part will have to wait for next time. Thanks for reading everyone.

The related pair of the trio waited patiently sitting across from each other on the area run waiting for the third part of their group to return. Meanwhile, Tammy crossed her room and took another box out from under her bed. It was an old shoe box that had seen some wear and tear in it's lifetime. The young girl lifted it off the floor and began to make her way back two where her guest and soon to be prisoner were sitting. It was a short trip that took maybe 4 minutes at the most to complete there was no hurry, they had plenty of time after all. Tammy rejoined the other two changing the line they formed into a triangle with one person sitting at each corner. She placed the box in the middle of the shape and opened the lid to reveal it's contents.

"Wow, you are serious about his aren't you?" Emily asked looking at the contents of the box.

Tammy nodded and took hold of a piece of rope from the box. "Could you put your hands together for me please. Either behind your back or in front if you feel more comfortable that way." Tammy stated putting more emphasis on the first suggestion than the second.

Emily rose from where she was witting and turned around showing her back to Tammy. She seated herself again and brought her hands around behind her back and put them together. She was starting to have second thoughts about her choice in the matter. Especially after seeing the contents of the box. She had expected Tammy to return, most likely with a jump rope or a shoe lace. Instead the girl had returned bearing a shoe box containing several coils of while cotton rope neatly folded. Apparently, Tammy had more experience with this than Emily had anticipated. However, she was not going to back down now. If she did in front of Zac, she would never live it down. Tammy was behind her now and in a minute it would be too late anyways. She just sat and let things take their course.

Tammy selected a piece of rope from the box that she knew was roughly 10 feet in length. The child uncoiled it allowing it's length to travel the floor without much trouble. Then, she scooted a few feet forward to close the gap between herself and Emily. Tammy took hold of the older girl's hands and drew them into an X patter crossing her wrists. Next, she took one end of the rope and tied a simple loop around Emily's right hand leaving about half a foot of a tail from it. It wasn't meant to be a final knot, just to hold the end still while she performed the tie. Tammy began wrapping the length of the rope around Emily's wrists horizontally several times making sure to pull each loop snug as she made the pass. After half a dozen passes or so, she switch to making vertical loops around the girl's crossed wrists. She had less rope to work with now and only got 4 loops in this direction. Finally, Tammy took the the remaining end of the rope and tied a triple know with the short tail she had left earlier. The knot was positioned on top of the tie and well out of the reach of Emily's hands.

"There we go, your hands are not getting out of that." Tammy said stepping back proudly.

Emily decided to put the brag and her bonds to the test. She drew her hands against the ropes with a few hard tugs. She tried moving them up, down, and side to side. Still, despite her best efforts, when she was done struggling, her bound wrist were still in the configuration that Tammy had provided earlier. She couldn't get free. The younger girl knew exactly what she was doing and it began to sink into Emily that she could not get out of this like she had originally anticipated. Emily had assumed that with Tammy being 3 years younger than her that she lacked the practical knowledge of how to tie somebody up. She figured she would just be a good sport about it and take a little time to escape. However, she could not get out of this. Tammy really did know exactly what she was doing.

Emily squirmed for another minute, then she maneuvered herself up into a kneeling position with her feet tucked back under her and her knees in front. This gave her a little more upper body leverage than just sitting, but still it wasn't nearly enough to make any real progress against the ropes. She was tied up fairly well and couldn't free herself. Zac sat by and watch as his sister squirmed and twisted her hands behind her back trying to free herself. It was a futile effort, Emily was definitely a prisoner. Tammy just stood back looking down on top of Emily. She was quite satisfied with herself. She had tied a couple of people up before. Mostly friends that she had back in the city. However, she could already tell that the other girl in the room was new to the whole situation. Finally, Emily stopped moving. She gave up and just rested a little worn out from the whole effort.

"I thought it would be easier to get free than this." She commented. "You are a really good tier uper. I can't move my hands at all. Urg!" Emily yelled as she gave the ropes another tug.

"Yeah, I am an expert. I get a lot of practice, mostly being tied up, but my mom showed me how to tie somebody up. No matter how hard they try they won't escape not matter what." Tammy commented passing a smirk along to her captive. "I will let you try to escape for a while longer if you like Emily. Let me know when you give up and I will untie you if you want. OK?" Tammy finished.

"I am not done yet, I will get out just you watch!" The other girl showed back at the 9 year old.

"OK, have it your way. Zac, do you want to play a game on the Wii? We'll let your sister try to escape for a while longer." Tammy asked.

Zac nodded and came over to where Tammy was standing next to the television. She turned it on and passed Zac a controller. Tammy reached into a pile of games sitting behind the television and pulled out Mario cart. Then, she put it into the system. She fired it up and soon Zac and Tammy were racing against each other head to head. Zac played video games at home on and off. However, they were not his primary interest in life. He had a fair amount of skill, but Tammy was definitely the better driver. Part of it was Zac's inexperience. The other was that his attention was decided as he watched his sister try to free herself and play the game at the same time. It was a difficult thing to do and his driving performance showed it.

Emily remained in a kneeling position from a while longer. She worked the ropes back and fourth and tried moving her hands side to side trying to find a weakness in her situation. It wasn't helping. It took her a few minutes to figure it out, but after some maneuvering with her legs, Emily managed to reach a standing position with her arms still tied tightly behind her back. Standing up helped in the same way that kneeling did. It allowed her more leverage to struggle with. However, she still couldn't wriggle her hands free of the bindings. Emily tried a number of different things. She tried to work her hands around to in front of her. This proved to be more difficult than she could manage. She tried to step over them, but she couldn't work them around her upper body enough to succeed in the effort.

When getting them to the front and struggling didn't work out, she tried an few other things. Emily tried reaching her hands around the side of her to see if she could reach her mouth to pick at the knot. She tried a couple of different angles, but nothing she did got her anywhere near her goal. After trying to get loose for about 20 minutes, Emily was tired, out of breath and frustrated. Finally, she just gave up on the effort. She stopped struggling and crossed the room slowly. She seated herself quietly behind Zac and Tammy and just shifted her attention to the game. She was beaten and there was no doubt about it However, the eldest of the 3 children could not bring herself to admit it to the other two in the room. So, Emily just sat there with her knees tucked up against her chest and her hands tied behind her back .

Zac and Tammy finished their current race and did another one before they took notice of Emily sitting behind them. Tammy looked back with a quiet smile at her prisoner. Her skills had proven useful to say the least. Still, she didn't want to rub it in too badly. She was a nice person deep down and Zac and Emily were the two closest things she had to friends here. She had been at school for over a week now. Tammy had made a few acquaintances, but nobody really lived close to her out here like they did in the city. She didn't want risk upsetting either of them over a simple game of tie up. Zac had selected his racer for the next race, but Tammy held them up a second.

"I have a third controller, do you want to play with us as well Emily?" Tammy asked with a short smile.

"I don't think I would do very good like this." Emily replied turning to show that her hands were still tied behind her. It would be quite difficult to play with her wrists crossed and tied behind her. "It wouldn't be fair."

Tammy just laughed along with Zac. There was no arguing that point. "Alright, then I'll just untie you and then it will be a fair match alright?" Tammy asked Emily hinting at the real point for the conversation. Tammy moved from where she was sitting to behind Emily on the ground. She reached down and began to fumble with the knot that bound the other girl's hands. Emily didn't respond, she had swallowed her pride, but didn't want to admit it. Still, she didn't do anything to prevent Tammy from freeing her. A moment or two later and the last of the ropes pulled free and Emily was able to return her hands to their normal position. She rubbed them a little getting the circulation back into them and then took the controller from Tammy.

The three children continued racing until Sarah made an appearance at the top of the stairs carrying a tray with 4 plates, a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, and a pitcher of juice. She also had some cups and a bag of potato chips with her. The three children put the game on hold so they could gather around the small table to share a meal with Tammy's mother and each other. They seated themselves and Sarah began to serve the meal. It wasn't anything fancy, but it would hit the spot and taste good after a long day. Sarah made several sandwich removing the crust from the one she served to Tammy. She offered her guests the same courtesy, but they were indifferent on the matter. She filled each of their plates one by one and then she set a place for herself at the remaining seat at the table. Once they were all seated, a conversation spoke up.

"I am glad you kids came over today. Tammy is glad to have some friends here. It's hard moving into a new town, but it's always nice to meet nice people like you two." Sarah offered as the children ate.

Zac was the first to reply. "Thanks for having us over. I would have come earlier in the week, but by the time the bus gets me home and I would walk over I would almost have to turn around and go home. My mom is too busy making dinner by that time to drop me off and pick me up." He finished and shifted to taking another bite of his sandwich. Emily nodded at the comment having been privileged to the conversation between Zac and his mother on the matter.

Sarah swallowed another gulp of juice. "I could pick you up and bring you over here after school if you want Zac. I could take you home as well in time for dinner if you want sometime, with your mother's permission of course. You could come over here and hang out for a few hours at least if you wanted to." Sarah finished completing the offer.

"It would still be pretty tight with the time my bus gets me home. What time does Tammy's bus drop her off?" Zac asked. "I don't see her on mine so she must take another one, does it get here quicker than mine?" He finished.

"Tammy doesn't take the bus Zac, I drive her to school and home. It only take me about 20 minutes or so. If you want I could just pick you up at school and bring you here if it's alright with your mom. Why don't you ask her if Tuesday this coming week would be alright. If not, the Summer is just up ahead and there will lost of opportunities to come over and play then if you two want." Sarah finished explaining the entirety of the offer. Emily and Tammy kept eating without adding much to the conversation. However, Tammy had a look of excitement on her face.

Zac nodded at the offer and let it settle. He told Sarah that he would ask when he got home. The children continued eating, Zac had been busy talking and the girls were almost done by now. But, he could be a quick eater when he wanted to. He inhaled most of the sandwich and gobbled down the chips. Then, he drank the remaining juice in his cup to keep all of it down. The performance caught a smile from Sarah and Emily. The meal continued forward for a little while longer and Emily asked Sarah a few questions that Tammy and her mother answered feeding off each others replies and filling in the blanks. Pretty soon it was done and Tammy's mother offered up some cookies for desert which, the three children took gladly. When it was done, Sarah collected the plates and cups and departed leaving the children on their own again. Emily and Zac still had a few hours before they had to go home for the day and Zac was making his way over to the Wii again assuming they would pick up where they left off. However, Tammy had other plans.

"Hey Zac, now that Emily had a turn, do you want to be tied up now?" She asked looking over at the boy.

"It was a lot of fun, you should give it a try." Emily added wanting to move the thought forward. Maybe Zac would have better luck escaping that she did. He was a boy after all and that made him a little stronger than her. Still, Zac was a little more hesitant on the matter. He was growing more comfortable with the idea with each approach he took with it. However, he still felt a little apprehensive about it, epically with Emily here. He didn't like the idea of being helpless with his sister around. They usually got along well, but there was still a sibling rivalry between them. He slowly shook his head.

"I think I am still not ready, maybe next time." He finished hoping the girls would drop the matter and they could get back to the Wii.

Tammy just shrugged. "Alright, then would you two like to tie me up?" She asked looking at her two guests. Emily looked back at her with a little bit of surprise. Zac wasn't opposed to the idea, but he wasn't sure how to respond either. "It's only fair, you let me tie you up Emily, I should let you have a turn to do the tying as well." Emily just nodded.

"Alright, sit down and put your hands behind your back." Emily commented as she went across the room to collect the piece of rope that had been used to bind her. It was still sitting loose on the floor where it had been left earlier in the day. It was a short trip. When she returned, Tammy was already sitting on the ground with her arms positioned behind her with the wrists crossed.

Emily didn't waste any time getting to work. She wrapped the rope horizontally around Tammy's wrists making sure to pull it tight with each pass. She used up it's length and tied a solid know. Tammy gave the ropes a few tugs to show they were holding.

"Why don't you get another piece and do my feet too. That way it will be harder for me to escape. There is plenty more rope in the box over there." Tammy commented. Emily nodded and went to retrieve another piece of rope from the box. She came back over and found Tammy sitting in another helpful position. She was seated with her knees drawn to her chest with her feet on the floor. Emily wrapped her ankles similar to her hands with eight or nine horizontal loops and knotted them off.

"There, now you can try and escape while Zac and I go play the game for a while." Emily commented with a degree of almost revenge passing through her voice. Tammy just sat and started to wiggle a little without making what appeared to be any progress. Satisfied that Tammy was getting a dose of her own medicine from earlier, Emily led Zac over to the Wii and handed him the second player controller. She selected a race and started it. Zac just sat down and played. The two siblings ignored Tammy for the most part. They could hear her struggling behind them, but the race was a tough one and Zac had his full attention on trying to beat his sister at it. The race began and the two of them were moving right along. Zac had taken the lead and they were making the start of the final lap of the race.

"You need to get that question block or he is going to beat you." Emily felt a hand on her shoulder and saw Tammy point to a item block that was in front of her cart as she came around the corner. She went for it and grabbed the item. Then it hit her.

She turned her head backwards and saw Tammy standing behind her with a warm smile on her face. "What? How did you get out of that!" Emily shouted in the direction of the other girl.

"You left the ropes too loose and it was easy to wiggle out of. You should have tied me up better. Oh well, maybe you can do a better job next time." Emily closed her eyes with a look of happiness on her face. Zac's car crossed the finish line in first place while Emily still had a third lap to go. Emily dropped the controller.

"Alright, if you are so good at that, how about the next time is right now. Go sit back down and I will do it right this time." Emily commented towards the other girl. Tammy's face just continued to show a smile. She just shrugged and returned to where she had been sitting before. Emily got up and collected the two pieces of rope from there they were sitting on the floor.

Emily began the process of tying Tammy back up again. This time, she made sure that the ropes were tighter and she was more careful about where the knots were. She wrapped Tammy's hands first pulling them tight enough that Tammy winced twice while she was tightening them. Her legs got a similar treatment. Emily took a moment or two tugging on the ropes with her hands to make sure they were tighter than last time. When she was satisfied, she got up and returned to her seat with Zac and started another race. This time, she was upset from having lost the previous one and Tammy getting loose on top of it so quickly. She shortened her resolve and played with every ounce of skill she had. Zac was a good driver, but Emily was just in the zone and that was it. After the third lap was over, Emily crossed the finish line with Zac still half a lap out.

"Great job Emily, you would have probably beat him last time if I hadn't distracted you. I thought I should wait this time." The voice was coming from over her shoulder. Emily didn't have to look. She already knew who it belonged to and that Tammy was not standing behind her on her bound legs.

Emily spun around quickly. "How in the heck . . . ." She stopped short not wanting to use certain word she knew that Zac might not. Again Emily just shrugged and smiled back at her.

"Do you want another try? This time, make sure you do it right or I am going to get bored." Tammy commented. Emily got up without a word and when to collect the rope.

Tammy seated herself again and Emily proceeded to bind her a third time. This time, she pulled the rope as tight as she could making sure that each pass was extremely secure. She tied Tammy's hands and feet again similar to the way she had before. However, this time she didn't stop there. She went back over to the shoe box and got some more rope. Well, she got all of it. There were another 5 or 6 piece of rope in the box and she used almost all of it. She used one longer piece to bind Tammy's arms to her sides. The remaining 4 pieces went around her legs at various points to secure that set of limbs better. Everything was pulled as tight as Emily could manage. She checked every rope. Finally, Emily found a handkerchief in the bottom of the box. She rolled it up and fashioned a blindfold out of it. It cover Tammy's eyes. Emily figured if she couldn't see she couldn't escape.

"Alright, Houdini, lets see you get out of that." Emily commented turning around and returning to her perch next to Zac on the Wii.

The brother and sister began to race again. This time however, Tammy didn't come over and interrupt them at the end of their first race. Emily looked back over her should and saw Tammy wriggling around without making much progress it appeared. She figured she finally managed to keep her sarcastic new acquaintance out of trouble. She started another race with Zac and let the matter be. The brother and sister ran half a dozen races or without interruption. Meanwhile, Tammy worked on her ropes. This time it was taking a little longer because she had to untie all the ropes that had been used on her legs. It was a slow process and she bundled up the ropes and placed them in a neat pile this time. She didn't want to spoil Emily's mood as quickly this time.

About half an hour after Emily had finished, Tammy crossed the room and sat down. "Zac could you pass me a controller?" She asked in a quiet tone.

Emily didn't even comment this time. She just let Zac hand over a controller and set the game to 3 players. The three children sat and played for another hour or so. When they were done, Tammy collected the ropes and put them away. Zac returned the Wii-motes to the shelf and turned off the television. The three of them went back downstairs and met up with Sarah in the kitchen.

"Oh, is it time for you kids to go home already. I guess it is, did you have a good time? Would you like to come back sometime again, I think Tammy and I would be happy to have you." She commented.

Zac was trying to think how to respond. Emily beat him too it. "We had a great time. Thanks for letting us use your driveway to skate and for lunch. It was fun being tied up, but I think Tammy is a lot better at escaping than I am." She finished.

"Oh, Tammy tied you up?" Sarah shot a quick look at her daughter. "Well, I am glad you had a good time with it. Some kids don't like it at all."

"Well, she tied me up and I tried to tie her up, but she just kept escaping. We ran out time for Zac to have a turn he will have to wait until next time." Emily replied.

"Well good, I am glad you kids had fun. You are welcome over here any time with or without an invitation to skate or play with Tammy. Zac, remember to ask your mom about Tuesday if you want to come over. She will have to send a note with you to school so I can pick you up." Sarah finished. "I will catch you later."

The foursome concluded their goodbyes. Then, Zac and Emily walked out the door onto the front porch. Zac strapped his roller skates back on over his socks and Emily picked up her roller blades to carry them home. It had been a fun and interesting day all around. The two children needed to hurry if they wanted to make it home before dinner.

Well, that concludes another chapter in this story. Stay tuned for the next part if you want to know what happens Tuesday.
