Why I don't like "e-tugs" or "online bondage"

Hi all,

from time to time, some people ask me if I want to play "online TUGs" with them, or they want to be my "virtual slaves". I want to post my opinion about this things here.
I am aware that my opinion will be different from many other's here; my post is not meant to attack yours, more to start a (hopefully) interesting discussion.

So this is about what often is called "e-tugs" or "online bondage". A lot of people like it, me not. Why? I see several reasons for it.
First, I happen to have a lot real bondage experience. And to me, there is no substitute to really applying the ropes on someone. If I write in in a chat, there is only so much I can tell with words, no matter how much of them I use...and in my eyes, never comes close to the real thing.
Second, the experience. Let's assume I have a "Online slave" and give her orders per mail. I am not present when she completes them (assuming that she doesn't lie about it anyway). I cannot see her, I cannot touch her, I cannot smell her. To me, there is little gain in this.
Third, I often see that "online-only" people have very limited (and often plain wrong) perceptions about what real TUGs can be- and what not. Maybe this has to do with imagination running wild...in your mind, you easily can be the toughest slave, enduring all pains your master induces...however, in reality, it may simply hurt!

Important to me is that you get my point...I don't blame all this, I just say it's nothing for me. In fact, I like a lot of virtual things, like telling (or reading) stories. I could even imagine writing a story with another writer (preferable female ;) ) together, providing different viewpoints. Anyway, I stray off topic now...
So, please, share your point of view!

Cheers

While I can see how different people can like and dislike different things, it seems like you're somewhat missing the point of these role playing games, mainly in that they're supposed to be games and not much more. I think most people know that a TUG rp can't compete with being tied up in real life much more than guitar hero can be compared with actually playing a guitar.

The way I see it, rps (mainly ones that revolve around fetishes, but regular ones as well) are more a way to express our more creative and devious sides and, to some extent, almost live out some fantasies which could never be real. I'm not just talking about things you think could never happen. It also includes things like possessed ropes and super futuristic gags. You could also try out some fantasies which, as you mentioned, could lead to irreversible damage without actually hurting anyone. Up till now that same text could be applied to writing a fictional TUG story. The difference is that here you actually have another person (or maybe a few more) adding stuff to it, maybe taking away some control you have over the plot and maybe even surprising you with a completely unexpected role reversal (while trying to remain somewhat logical and not just ignoring the fact that they're tied down).

Your post mainly pointed out the "flaw" of a TUG rp not being real, while actually I think that's mostly the point. Maybe when virtual reality gets to what is now sci-fi level one could live out their crazy fantasies, but for now I think having a good imagination and basic writing skills (and having some memory of the game leak into your dreams  ) would do just fine.

P.S: I chose to ignore the e-dom/sub thing mainly because I have no experience with it.
