What is something you wish more people understood about bondage?

Some sort of common misconception or predisposition that you would want to put to rest?

"Bondage" is not synonymous with pain and domination. The way its depicted in tv and movies is just one aspect of bondage. It is shown in such a way that makes it out to look like some kind of satanic deviation. Honestly I don't like this one sided depiction of bondage. Yes, some people prefer the harder stuff, for some the domination and submission aspect are more important and for others it is not as much, but that's not the case if you see how its shown in media.

That it's not always about sex or crap like that. I tend to use the term tie-up rather than bondage when talking about it.

Agreed. Stigmatized to the fullest, so much that people who are "kink-curious" go straight for the strong stuff so to speak. Whatever happened to go-old strange fun?
To tie or be tied? I'm not one to care as long as there are gags!

I wish more people understood that bondage is about getting tied up/tie somone up, solely for that purpose and not only for foreplay which will lead to sex. It's not 100% sexual

The belief that 50 Shades of Grey portrays accurate bondage, I'm sick of telling my friends that I'm into bondage and they immediately assume that I like that piece of crap film and book *shudder*

or thats its not always about control or feeling powerful over someone

Care to explain that @rocketroy?

I tend to disagree with the above statement as i generally believe that it's actually all about having/not having control, but I'd like to hear some other opinions as well.

I also dont like how people associate it with sex and sometimes pain, I have only once done bondage in a sex situation and I could never bring myself to hurt anyone.

I would think that it varies from person to person. There are different aspects of bondage that appeal to different people. Some like the control/lack of control aspect, some like it simply for the feeling of being restrained, and some like both.

Some people assume that being tied up is by default painful; my dad once asked me if I'd rather be hit with a hammer.
In my opinion, being tied up isn't painful if it's done right, and the ropes are snug and tight, but not too tight (if it's rope that's being used). Also, enjoying the idea of being tied up probably helps make it feel better :quirk:

I totally agree. When I talk about playing tie ups with my 13 year old neighbor, some people even on this site think that it's gonna lead to sex or something.

That more people practice it than they might think.

It's not a thing that's done by strange people.

To be open minded and give it a go as they might actually enjoy it

yeah sure i'll explain. i mean that by its not always like someone who has power issues like a girl tying up a guy because she is more powerful than others. some people just like being tied up its not about having more power over the opposite sex. sure in bondage or tie up games you do have more power and control over someone but its not about tying someone up simply because you have a need for power. its not about me doing it because i have a need to feel powerful over you or the other way around some people just simply like being tied
