Re: Bill to allow Obama to shut down the Internet

Postby Nuclearo » Sun Sep 06, 2009 5:52 pm

I'm pretty sure it's like some emergency military regime thing. Started and stopped when they think the danger is gone. problem is that it could easily be overused, and will affect the entire world, not just the US. everybody who uses an american based server will be cut off. I think that in a democratic world it is pretty wrong to give the president of one nation the ability to easily affect every single nation in the world, even if the US pretty much is godfather of the world. If at some point the president would be a paranoid psychopath who hates the internet and uses this bill to annoy the entire world I think it would be pretty unfair to the over 6 billion people who didn't participate in his election ;)

Not possable. The internet is not some actual thing that you can "shut down" its a network of thousands of computers all over the world. The only way to "shut it down" would be to force ever web hoster on the plaint to stop and last i checked the pres of the united state couldn't even do that in his own country but that seams like that's what this bill is. But even then his authority does not extend to other countreas

First off, I do agree that it seems to be one of those "to much power for one person" kind of deals, but what I'm more then a little interested in is what exactly constitutes a "Cyber Security Emergency." (no sarcasm intended, I really am curious as to what it would include)

An Irani pinging the pentagon XD

Also, when they say "shut down the internet" (I think) they basically mean make American ISPs unavailable, thus cutting the US off the internet. A French man could still access British sites if that's the case. I personally agree that it's too much power for the government to have. It opens up 'great reasons' to keep the internet under watch and possibly even remove things they find "dangerous". The internet is free and uncontrollable, that is its beauty, and when something is beautiful, you don't burn it (unless it isn't yours and you're eaten by jealousy :P)

agreed most certainly, I also think it would be almost imposable to enforce. Not to mention the massive civil unrest something like that would cause. It could vary well be even worse than outlawing TV or video games.

Of course it is. If those were outlawed you could still get them over the internet :P

Its impossible for any one person to shut down the internet, considering servers are all over the world

that's exactly what i said.

Looks like its more a matter of outlawing it in the us then shutting it down. (still all but impassable tho)

Plus with cell phones and stuff as soon as the US forbids the internet to its people the whole world is going to know. Plus international costs are getting cheaper, soon if you cant chat with your buddy across the world you can call them at a reasonable price.

About shutting down the internet: there is more than just your ISP, you know?
If I remember correclty, most root DNS servers are US based, and if they were shut down, a lot of people would have a hard time to connect to any site worldwide.
Or do you know the IP Adress of tieupgames.net, for example?
Just shows that there is still to much based in the US.

actualy all you have to do is ping the site name in the run commands

sorry? the ip to ping them? It works the other way around it retrieves the IP from the site. Im not intirely shure how it works but it would be pointless if it needed the IP to find the IP

Anywho how long do you really think it would take for all the DNS servers to either mover out of the states or be replaced (ied say days)

One word: wrong.

The IP is *NOT* retrieved from the site. When you request a webpage (e.g. tieupgames.net) a request for name solution is sent to your DNS (Dynamic Name Server). That server returns the IP adress of that site...and NOW the data transfer can start.
However, your local DNS server does *not* know the IP for every site. But he sends down your name solution request further in the DNS hierarchy. The top layer of the hierarchy are the root DNS servers (actually, these are not single servers, but server farms, but logically they act as one server). When they fail, you usually wont get a DNS solution- ergo, your program (be it a browser or ping) won't know the IP adress to look at.
As of now, there are 13 Root DNS server- 7 of which are US based. So, theoretically, with enough preparation time...it would be easy to "switch the light out" within seconds (or at least hamper the system enough that the remaining servers don't work properly anymore).

This vunerability has been a long time criticism about the DNS network (and thereby the part of the internet most people use, the www) and one should stop making oneselves illusions about that.

Sorry for the technical rant, but I want to dispel some of the wrong "knowledge" around here.

Cheers
