Aloha

Caleb could feel the plane begin its descent. He slowly awoke from his sleep and glanced out the window, still groggy. He couldn't believe the day finally arrived. The Seven Knights together again. That was the nickname he and his six friends became known as at El Rancho Rio High School in Los Angeles. Freshman through senior year they did everything together. The group was inseparable until that final summer after graduation. Then it was time to grow up.

Caleb stayed in LA and was a bartender at a popular nightclub downtown. He wasn't really sure what he wanted to do with life just yet. He was only 23; there was plenty of time for all that. Right now he just wanted to enjoy himself and the money he was making wasn't bad. He looked to his right and saw Jake still asleep in the middle seat. Jake was the martial artist of the group. He had trained in Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, and Taekwondo since he was a kid. After high school he decided to go pro and it paid off. In two months he'd be making his debut in the UFC in Las Vegas. Things were looking up for the kid. In the last seat in their row Carlos was listening to his iPod, mouthing lyrics to himself. Carlos was the musician, the heart throb of the group. Just after high school ended he formed a band with some guys he met at one of those hole in the wall bars where local musicians perform. They were good too. It didn't take long for them to move to more popular venues and now an agent had just approached them a few weeks ago about a possible record deal. The news was perfect timing to celebrate in Hawaii with his best friends from high school.

The pilot made the announcement to get ready for landing. Before they knew it they were on the ground and entering the baggage claim where their buddy, Nahele, was there to greet them. Nahele was from Honolulu originally, but his father took a job in Los Angeles the summer before he started high school. He quickly became friends with the other guys after trying out for football. After high school was over he decided to head back to Honolulu and spend his days riding the waves. He now owned his own surf shop and was enjoying life. It was his idea for the guys to come out to Hawaii for a week. This was the first time in five years the seven would be together again and they were now reaching that age where they had to take life seriously. It would be a trip to close that chapter of their lives before they officially moved on to adulthood.

"There he is!" Caleb shouted as they saw Nahele waiting for them with a big smile on his face by the baggage carousel.

Nahele stepped forward. They shook hands and then hugged each other and then he did the same with Jake and Carlos.

"Man, I've missed you guys," he said, "I've barely seen any of you over the past few years."

"Heh, you know me," Jake laughed, "always training. This is the first vacation I've taken in a while."

"I've been so busy with the band, man," Carlos jumped in. " Would have loved to come out here a few times, but it's so hard to find the time."

"It aight," Nahele replied, "you're in paradise now, brah. This week you guys get to leave all that shit back in LA and relax."

"Where are the others?" Caleb asked.

"They're back at the beach house chillin," Nahele said. "Ariel got in this morning and James and Tyler flew in from New York last night."

"Well who the hell wants to hang around here? Let's check out this sweet pad you rented for us," Jake said.

"You're gonna love it," Nahele said, "Trust me guys, this is going to be an epic week. Nothing is going to ruin this for us"

Cool setup and (as usual) awesome models. Can't wait to see where this leads...

They arrived at the beach house and found their other three friends lounging out in the sun sipping on some beers. Ariel was the cowboy. He went to work on his grandfather's ranch out in the Mojave after high school just to make some money for the summer, but decided to go all in and learn the business. He planned on taking it all over after his grandfather retired. James and Tyler had decided to head to New York and were roommates. James landed a modeling gig and Tyler went to NYU for Finance and was now working for a top firm on Wall Street.

"Already catching the rays?" Caleb asked.

"Hey!" James jumped up off the lounge chair.

"Geez, man," Caleb said, "You look like you stepped right out of an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog.

"That's what they pay me for," James laughed as the two hugged.

"You still shoveling cow shit, Ariel?" Jake teased.

"Haha, laugh it up, neanderthal, but all that land is gonna be mine some day,"Ariel poked back.

"What about you, Gordan Gecko?" Carlos asked Tyler.

"Hey," Tyler replied, "it's a tough job, but somebody's gotta make all that money!"

"You guys want some drinks?" Nahele asked.

Nahele grabbed some beers from the fridge and the seven young men spent the next couple of hours out on the deck catching up, the beach and ocean right in front of them.

"So what's on the agenda for the week boys?" Jake asked during a break in the conversation.

"Glad you asked," Nahele replied, "I wanted to run something by you guys. We've got all week to hang out on the beach and everything, but how would you guys like to do an off the beaten path excursion for a day?"

"Like what, man?" Caleb inquired.

"Well, I kind of have this island....." Nahele started to explain, but was interrupted.

"Wait, you have an island?" Carlos responded sarcastically.

"Well, sort of," Nahele smiled, "It's not technically my island, but my family has been going there for a long time. There are these group of deserted islands about five miles off shore. They aren't really known to tourists and locals don't have that much interest in them. My great-grandfather built a cabin there back during World War II after Pearl Harbor was bombed to use as a safe house he could take his family to if the Japanese ever successfully invaded the islands. Since that never happened he never needed it for that, but he kept up with the place to use as a sort of get away. He used to take my grandfather and my grandfather would my father there when he was a kid and me too. Nobody knows about it."

"Anything to do out there?" Tyler asked skeptically.

"Oh, yeah, brah. There's all kinds of hiking you can do. There are a couple of really cool waterfalls I can take you to where we can go swimming and shit. There's an old lava formation, all kinds of stuff. I figured if you guys want we can get away from the city and just spend one day out in nature, no phones, no television, just get away from all that shit. There is plenty of room to sleep there and we'll come back in the morning"

"That's cool with me, bro" Caleb replied.

"Yeah, I'm in," James confirmed.

"Sweet!" Nahele said. "I figured you guys would be cool with it so I've already rented the boat. We'll pick it up tomorrow morning and head out. You guys will like it, trust me. It's a really special place to me and it means a lot to be able to share it with the best friends I ever had."

Wow! An island only five miles off Hawaii and its deserted. This should be entertaining.

The seven young men spent the rest of the day and evening hanging out on the beach and drinking, but they got an early start the next morning. They pulled up into the marina and saw a young Hawaiian man dressed in a white shirt and a black tie, pants, and shoes waiting for them at the door.

"You must be Nahele," the young man greeted the boys as they walked up the deck. "I'm Kekoa. I'm going to drive you guys out to the island."

"Wait," Nahele responded, confused, "I was renting a boat for me to drive out there."

"Yeah, but seven of you requires a bigger boat and the boss considers that a charter. He won't lend boats out that big. Too much liability. I have to drive you."

"But we're staying over night," Tyler said as he stepped forward.

"Yeah, no problem, brah. I'm going to drop you guys off there and I'll be back to get you in the morning."

"Wait, what if something happens? We'll be stranded there," Caleb asked.

"I have a satellite phone to give you," Kekoa reassured him, "any problems you call up here and someone will get right out. Sorry, guys, it's not my rules. We do this all the time, though, never had a problem."

Nahele turned around and faced the group, "It's fine, guys. I've been going out there my whole life. Nothing has ever happened. Come on, that just makes it more adventurous right?"

"Yeah, don't be a bunch of city pussies," Jake teased, "Live for the moment."

"So, we're good?" Kekoa asked.

"All good," Nahele shook his hand, "let's get going."

Kekoa took them to the boat. They all boarded with their back packs and he started the boat and steered it out of the marina. Nahele stood in the bridge with Kekoa to steer him in the right direction. The others took a seat out on the deck as the boat took off out into the ocean and cruised along the coast line. After a few minutes the boat broke off from the coast and headed out towards a group of islands out on the horizon. It didn't take long to reach and as they approached the boys could actually see several islands all grouped together. The boat slowed speed as it approached and entered a waterway between two of the smaller islands. After a few minutes they passed between them and came upon another group.

"Hey, Nahele," James asked, "How many of these islands are there?"

"A few dozen I think," he shouted back from inside the bridge, "never really counted. That's what makes my island so secluded to most people. It's kind of right in the middle of all of these."

They continued winding between the smaller islands and the boys took in the site of the tropical forests and beaches. After making their way passed this second group of islands a much larger one laid ahead of them.

"That's the place, boys!" Nahele shouted

"Break to the right and you'll see a small river. You'll want to head up there." he instructed Kekoa.

Kekoa slowed down the boat and turned into the river. After a few more minutes Nahele had him turn into a smaller tributary on the left. They cruised a few more minutes up the tributary and then came to a dock also on the left.

"That's it," Nahele said.

Kekoa pulled the boat up to the dock and secured it.

"If you keep going in that direction the tributary arcs back to the river and you can get back out to the ocean," Nahele told Kekoa, "you'll remember how to get back here, right?"

"Yep, it's all recorded in the GPS. Have a good time, man"

Nahele joined the others on the dock and Kekoa drove off in the boat.

"Welcome to paradise, boys"

They made their way up a makeshift trail to the old cabin. Nahele opened the door and a musty odor floated out the door.

"Guess we should open the door and get some air in," he said.

The boys walked inside and looked around. It was definitely the kind of place you'd expect to find off the beaten path. There was a main room in the front with a few cots and a wood burning stove. There were two doors on the back wall leading into two other smaller rooms that also had more sleeping accommodations.

"Your great-grandfather built this 70 years ago?" Ariel asked.

"Yeah, just the front room here. My grandfather and father added the two back rooms," Nahele explained.

"So who actually owns this land?" Carlos inquired.

"Nobody really," Nahele said, "the state probably, but nobody ever comes here or if they have over the years they've never said anything about this being here."

He looked around and scratched his head.

"Something wrong?" Caleb asked.

"Well... no, it just seems like some things are out of place."

"When was the last time you were here?" Jake asked.

"Bout a year and a half ago."

"Dude, you probably just don't remember," Tyler reassured him.

"Yeah, you're probably right," Nahele admitted,"Well, drop your bags and grab your swim trunks, boys. I've got a cool spot to take you to."

They changed and followed Nahele through the forest. After about a half a mile they came to a small ravine with a large pond and a waterfall pouring over the far cliff.

"That's unreal,"James said in awe.

"Jump in guys," Nahele said, "the water out near the falls is pretty deep so you can dive off the rocks if you want."

The guys spent the next hour diving, swimming, and splashing around. Caleb decided to take a break and stepped out of the pond. He placed his towel on the ground and laid down to get some sun. As he lay there he was startled by a crackling in the woods behind him.

"What was that?" he wondered to himself.

He stood up and cautiously walked into the forest and looked around. He didn't see anything or hear anything else, but he jumped when he felt someone's hand on his shoulder behind him.

"Whoa! Chill, brah!" Nahele laughed.

"Shit, man, you scared me," Caleb explained.

"What are you doing?"

"I heard something, like someone stepping on some twigs or something."

"It's probably just an animal. I've seen wild pigs here over the years, but nothing that's going to eat you," he laughed again.

"I don't know. It sounded like someone was standing back here."

"You've been in the city too long, brah. You're paranoid. There's nobody here but us."

Caleb walked back to the pond, but couldn't shake the eerie feeling that they were being watched.

Here we go!!!

Re: Aloha

Postby JHardcastle » Sun May 15, 2016 9:05 am

After the swimming hole the boys did some hiking and then made their way back to the cabin just before night fall. Caleb's uneasiness faded away with the exotic scenes of the tropical island they were on. When dusk hit they built a fire outside and sat around drinking, reminiscing about their old high school shenanigans, and continued catching up on their current lives.

"So you and your dad even built that small dock down where the boat let us off?" Carlos asked Nahele.

"Yep, all by hand."

"Wow, Nahele, never knew you could do all this shit," James said, impressed.

"Hey, you can take the boy off the island, but you can't take the island out of the boy," Nahele joked.

They were suddenly startled by a flock of birds loudly squawking and flying out of the woods into the sky, as if something had frightened them. Several of the boys jumped up.

"Geez, will you guys relax?" Nahele laughed, "you guys are so jumpy. Like I said earlier, too much time in the city."

"I don't know," Caleb said, "I've just had this weird feeling all day that we're being watched."

"Brah, I've spent days at this place all alone. It's way safer here than the streets of Honolulu. Like I said, these islands out here do have some feral animals on them. There's probably a wild pig or something poking around."

"Alright," Jake announced as he stood up, "You pussies can sit around here cowering from the Big Bad Wolf. I need to get some sleep. I want to get up early and run along the beach before the boat picks us up."

"We're on vacation, Jake, take a break," Tyler said, "Your fight is two months way."

"Yeah, the fight that could determine my career. Ain't no rest for the wicked."

"Just make sure you're back by 8:00. That's when the boat is coming to pick us back up," Nahele informed him.

He went inside and about an hour later the others finally turned in.

6:30 came and Jake's cell phone started vibrating. He woke up and walked outside. Despite being in Hawaii it was actually fairly cool so early in the morning. He used one of the gallon jugs of water and soap Nahele had stored in the backroom in the absence of a proper shower to clean and freshen up and then threw on his Under Armour shirt and running tights and his sneakers. He started up his iPod and started jogging his way to the beach.

"Wish I could run to this scene everyday," he thought to himself as he slipped through the sand under his feet.

Just as he found a good rhythm he stopped abruptly as something shined in his eyes.

"What the hell?"

He looked over towards the forestry and it shined again. Curiosity getting the better of him, he decided to check it out. He walked into the woods and glanced around, but couldn't find the object that was reflecting the sunlight at him. As he took one more step forward he felt something suddenly wrap tightly around his ankles. His feet were pulled out from under him, knocking him on to his back. He was dragged a couple of feet along the ground towards a tree and then lifted feet first into the air. He had been snared in some sort of trap and he was now batting at the air, hanging upside down about two feet off the ground.

"Hey!!" He yelled, "what the fuck!! Nahele! This shit ain't funny!!!"

Being a professional fighter, he was, of course, in impeccable physical shape, with a strong core, so he stopped struggling for a moment and curled his upper body upward so he could grab onto his ankles. He was trying to untangle the rope from around them, but it was the weight of his own body that was keeping the rope securely cinched. He heard someone walking up behind him so he let go of his ankles and flopped back upside down again.

"Nahele, you mother...... hey.... who the fuck are.....??

His question was cut off as the last thing he saw was the rubber sole of a black boot coming at his face, knocking him out cold.

When Jake came to he was confused. He tried to open his eyes, but all he could see was darkness. He tried to talk, but his mouth was sealed shut. When he tried to move he quickly realized he had been restrained. His wrists were roped behind his back. He felt more rope wound tightly around his biceps and just above and below his pecs. He started struggling, but who ever tied him up knew what they were doing and by securely binding him and blindfolding and gagging him with some sort of muzzle on his face, they took away his biggest strength, his fighting ability. He realized his legs weren't tied so he sat up on the edge of the bed and then stood up. He began working at the ropes, but was pushed back down onto the bed.

Jake.jpg
Jake Tied Up

"Sit your ass down, boy." he heard an older man say in a gruff, gritty voice.

As a fighter it wasn't in his nature to capitulate so easily, even when the odds were stacked against him. He grunted defiantly through his gagged mouth and stood back up again. He was immediately pushed back down, this time more forcefully, and he felt a booted foot press painfully into his crotch.

"MMMMMPPPPPPPPPPPPHHHH!!!"

"Son, I'm not going to tell you again," the gruff voice warned. "Get in here boy!" the man yelled to someone else.

"Is he awake?" a younger man asked.

"Yes," the older man answered, "and as expected he's not being very cooperative."

"I'm sure we can fix that."

"You did good, boy. You took out the biggest threat first, just like I taught ya. Now those sissy friends of his should be like shooting fish in a barrel."

"I followed them around all day yesterday, learning about them, just like you said, Father," the younger man explained, "they have a boat coming to pick them up soon."

"You stop that boat, boy," the older man ordered, "you can't let them get off that island. They'll come back here with reinforcements and they'll try and take you back to that hospital."

"MMMMPPPPPPHHH!! MMMMPPPPPPHHH!!" Jake was shaking his head back and forth trying to tell them they were wrong, but he was responded to with another boot painfully pushing into his groin.

"This one is going to be trouble," the older man said, "before you leave you need to hogtie this boy. I don't have the patience to be a babysitter while you're gone."

"Yes, father."

"Lazy boy!" Kekoa's father yelled to him from inside the office as Kekoa stormed down the dock. "You did a sloppy cleaning job on those boats yesterday. You always cut corners. Hey, where are you going? You don't pick those boys up for another hour yet."

"I'm leaving now!" He shouted back. "Better than standing here listening to you always on my case!"

"Disrespectful boy! You clean those boats again when you come back, you hear?"

"Yeah, yeah....."

Kekoa started up the boat and pulled out. He couldn't stand listening to his father's badgering anymore. He would just pull up to the island and relax while he waited for the guys to meet up with him. When he arrived at the island there was nobody waiting for him as expected. There was still another 30 minutes before they were scheduled to show up, so he could sit back and enjoy the quiet. He went down below deck, laid on a small cot, and closed his eyes. It wasn't more than a few minutes when he heard foot steps on the deck above. He got up and walked back up the steps and out onto the deck.

"Wasn't expecting you guys to be early.... MMMPPPPHHHHHH!!" He was interrupted by what felt like a bee sting on his neck and a hand clamping over his mouth from behind.

"I'm sorry," a man said to him, " I know you're innocent in this, but I can't let you take them off the island. Father said they'll come for me."

"MMMPPPHHHH!!" Kekoa struggled. He was an athletic young man, but quickly felt his body weakening. He had been injected with some kind of sedative and he slumped back unconsciously into the man's arms.

Back at the cabin the boys were ready to pack it up when they realized Jake had not returned from his run.

"Jake!" Carlos was calling out in the woods.

"I told him the boat was picking us up at 8:00," Nahele said annoyed. "If we aren't down there on time we'll get charged for an extra day."

"Well, regardless, we obviously can't leave without him so we need to find him," Caleb said.

"What if he fell and hurt himself or something?" Ariel surmised.

"Or got lost," Tyler replied.

"Yeah, we need to go look for him," Nahele said. "Why don't you guys kind of fan out and see if you can find him. I'm going to walk down to the dock and let Kekoa know what's going on. And please pay attention to your surroundings so you can find your way back. Everyone be back in 30."

"I remember him saying he was going to run on the beach," James noted.

"Good place to start," Caleb said.

Nahele made his way to the boat while the other five walked down to the beach and started calling for Jake.

"You think he's alright?" Carlos asked.

"He probably just got lost," Ariel replied, "I bet he comes running this way any minute once he hears us."

"We should probably split up so we can cover more ground," Caleb suggested, "I'll stick to the beach here. You two head that way into the wood," he said to James and Tyler, "and you guys head the other way," he pointed to Ariel and Carlos.

Meanwhile, Nahele saw the boat as he approached the shore of the tributary.

"Hello! Kekoa?" He called as he stepped onto the boat. "Kekoa?"

Upon hearing no answer he went to the steps that went down below deck and called out again. He then walked down the steps, but seeing no Kekoa he went back up on deck.

"Why would he leave the boat?" he thought to himself.

"Kekoa!" He called out, but still no reply.

"What the hell. This doesn't make any sense."

"Jake!" Tyler called out as he and James trekked through the woods, "Jake, you out there?"

"Where the fuck could he have gone?" James asked.

"I don't know, man, but I'm starting to get kind of worried." Tyler answered

"Maybe he's back at the cabin," James said, "you know, one of us probably should have stayed around there in case he came back. I'm going to head back up there."

"Yeah, good idea," Tyler said. "I'll keep a look out here for a little bit longer. Maybe he'll turn up."

James made his way back to the cabin. He called out for Jake periodically along the way,.

"Jake, you back?" he said as he opened the door and walked in, but, of course, there was no answer.

"Great," he mumbled to himself. He noticed the satellite phone sitting on the table in the middle of the room and thought to himself maybe he should try and call the boat place for help. He picked up the phone and was about to push the pre-programmed speed dial button when he was grabbed roughly from behind. A hand with a damp cloth was forced over his mouth and nose while another muscular arm wrapped around his neck, pushing him up against the body of his attacker. James struggled and tried to fight, but unknown to him the rag was damp with chloroform and he became almost immediately delirious and fatigued. He fought against his attacker, mmmpphing until the blackness filled the room as his eyes shut with this last conscious breath.
