Sexual torture in English?

So, for my English project, I have to read a book called "Where the Heart Is" by Billie Letts. All of a sudden, in chapter 12, there's a part where the antagonist is in prison and ends up in the infirmary several times. The prison doctor has a crush on him and likes to see him in pain. So when he's fixing the antagonist's broken nose, he "stuffed it with so much cotton that the soft tissue of the septum was perforated"(Letts 122). And when he treats a wound in his butt, "he added a pinch of Drano to the salve"(122) and when he stitched up his rectum, "he signed, with a flourished and fine signature, his name"(122). What the hell?

....................strange book.
In the end, it matters not how many breaths you took, but how many took your breath away.

Try and find a piece of literature which doesn't have sexual undertones!

Granted, this book seems to be more upfront about it, but a lot of literature can be reduced down to sex. Bondage/torture imagery is very common in literature, it's just that the scenes aren't quite so graphic xD

I could just imagine if a tabloid got hold of this.

It's the sort of thing that they love to blow up out of all proportion.
Calling Fifty Shades of Grey a Bondage Story is like calling Titanic an Iceberg Movie...

She did warn us before we picked it. Basically, we had to pick one from 14

It's all of 5 sentences in a 355 page book. We also read a short story that was way more intimate called "The Storm"
