Are you (still) exited for FF VII

Postby Chris12 » Mon Dec 14, 2015 9:08 am

Whether you're a Sony fan or not its hard to deny them teasing a remake of the widely revered Final Fantasy 7 secured their E3 victory. Even at the other end of a screen at 6 in the morning I could feel the hype filling the conference hall. And there's a good reason for it too. Out of any game only Ocarina of time inspires the same devotion from it fans. Contests of best games ever are often between these two.

So I'd like to ask if anyone here is exited for the game. Perhaps the better question would be if you're STILL exited about it. Because recently two things got revealed that put a damper on all the hype. Firstly is the unsurprising news that they would ditch the turn based combat for a more action oriented one. The second controversial news was that the remake of FF 7 would be an episodic one...and Squire Enix does not have the reputation to make that news come without fear of abuse.

As for me. I'm reasonably exited for the game though I have my reservations as well. I can totally see why 7 would be the game to remake but truthfully its not the Final Fantasy I would go for. FF7 is neither ff6 nor 9 and Cloud certainly isn't Zidane or Terra. But that's a question of taste I suppose. The news still came very welcome to me because now I can wipe away the massive gaming faux pass of never having payed Final Fantasy 7. Unlike more recent ones you also can't really go wrong with any pre XIII final fantasy.

The news about turn based combat doesn't sit to badly to me in practice. Like I said, I never played the original so there's no familiar combat system to ruin for me and combat looked cool in both the trailers of this game and the newest one.
That being said it doesn't sit well with me on a philosophical level. Final Fantasy 7 not having turn based combat is the definitive confirmation of the end of an era in gaming. The old guard of Final Fantasy games are the posterchild of the traditional rpg and 7 is the very game which made the genre mainstream. That very game in particular abandoning turn based combat gives a message and that message is that turn based combat no longer has a place in modern gaming. And I'm finding that a very bad message.

The game being episodic is more damming news. Squire's reputation isn't filling me with a lot of confidence and if the game is contained in episode that the world map and further exploration will be very hard to pull off.

I pretty much spent 5 yrs of my childhood on FF7.. 2Yrs playing it repeatedly and 3yrs prior utilising its walkthrough guide to design other games, so I was hyped as hell, even knowing I would be buying a console in the process, (Looks at the tragedy of the wii u for smash bros only). However after seeing the trailer scraping turn based/atb system, it definitely wont feel at all like ff7 and tbh the new "action based" versions completely make me not even care.

Tbh as a student, Im not going to get as its released because Im gonna wait to view some videos before ruining a portion of my childhood & student finance in one go. Although Barret does indeed look nicely modelled.

EDIT: My main love for FF7 is the materia system so hopefully the game isn't twisting away from the original system too much.

Like I said as someone who hadn't played the original the lack of turn based combat isn't a dealbreaker. But I do understand and had I had strong memories of playing the game I might as well hold the same opinion as you.

(Looks at the tragedy of the wii u for smash bros only)

As a system that has Mario Kart, Bayonetta, Hyrule Warriors Dk tropical freeze and a new Zelda coming up I'd say only the U for smash only is a choice rather then a tragedy :big:

It was kinda more from the perspective that getting a Wii U when already having a Wii didn't really change much for me. Especially as I bought whilst being a student and nothing really grabbed me enough to pay. Just kinda stuck with the old mario kart and such. Ok, now I sound like an awful gamer... Im not on a games design course or anything XP.
But XENOBLADE arghabrla :) :) :)

good old Final Fantasy, the only RPG title i probably have spent more time on than these classics must be Chrono Trigger and Earthbound (our mother 2 if you prefer). when i first saw that they were REMAKING the game, all from scratch, not just freshening up the old one, i have to admit, it made me smile a little.
however, FF7 never was my biggest favorite, i think FF8 had a much better story to share, FF9 had much more interesting characters and gameplay, and FF6 is definitely the best Final Fantasy ever made. what i liked the best about FF7 was the length of the game, even though it only came on three discs unlike FF8 and FF9 that had four discs, and Cloud is definitely an iconic character in the gaming industry.
but like i already mentioned, Chrono and Earthbound are the RPGs i have enjoyed the most during my time behind the TV screen.
then again, this is just my opinion, and judging by the popularity of the FF games, there is a huge chance that most of the fans would disagree with me on everything i just said.

so to answer the question, am i excited?
well, i would have been more hyped if this had been back when i was in my late teens or early twenties, to be honest.
i think the game looks good, and i am absolutely considering it, but i'm not a teenager any longer, i have other priorities, i don't have the time to play video games as much as i once did, so i don't feel the big excitement that everyone else is talking about.

It was always good to be a chrono trigger fan. You can say a lot about Squire but I believe they ported that game to about half the systems we have these days.

Earthbound is getting its fair chance in the sun these days as well. Earthbound got its release on the Wii U and the first mother did as well. Now its just waiting for the third one...after about 20 years or so. Any time now...aaaany time.

Your ranking of the FF's is pretty much my opinion. Except 8 which I never played but 6 is the best and with 9 having Zidane I'd say it has the best cast. I would also rank 4 close to the top.

FF4 is also a classic that deserves to be honored, and FF3, i got the remake for both of them, absolutely worth your time if you are into classic RPGs.

should also mention that Mother 3 was released for the Wii-U in Japan last week, so it might be on it's way to the European and American market anytime now. considering how much people are requesting it, it would be weird if they didn't, sure, they have to make an official translation first, but the money spent on that will come straight back at the day it's launched.
then again, from an optipesstic perspective, Nintendo has done some weird choices lately, so i guess we shouldn't have our hopes too high.

This video isn't entirely Final Fantasy related but its got some interesting info on the publisher of that series. It partly explains why Squire Enix is paranoid enough to change so many things despite FF7 being guaranteed hit and why they chose to split the game into multiple episode rather then one superior finished product.

Apparently Squire Enix started getting cold feet, losing faith in full scale console gaming and had plans to move out of them. This seems to be a lighter version of Konami's by now infamous departure from the game industry. I suppose this strengthens my theory that modern Final Fantasy may completely fall from grace sooner then its strong name would imply.

I used to play the first four Dragon Quest (known then as Dragon Warrior) games by Square Enix (back then just called Enix) on the original Nintendo as well. I used to think pretty highly of them at the time too. it's amazing how much video-games have changed since though. Those old games are like nursery rhymes compared to Shakespeare now.

They are still good. The main thing that changes about video games is graphics, with one essential exception being the skip from 2D to 3D. Elsewise, a good SNES game is still a good game today, even if it isn't to everyones taste. It's similar to other forms of media. There are Black/White movies or ones without tone that are classics, because they are great.

I'm not trying to argue against you here, because I'm not really sure how you feel about old games. I just always have the urge to defend them, because it makes me sad when people dismiss great games, just because they are old. Again, I don't say you are saying this.

Anyway, on topic: I love the original FF VII (like nearly all FFs - especially IX has a special place in my heart. Never really liked IV that much, though.). I replayed it (VII) this summer, and enjoyed it a lot - the story, the characters, the atmosphere (partly deeply sad and dystopian, partly goofy, fun and exciting), the turn-based battles. I still remember the time it came out, when the summons looked amazing (unlike today, where they look awful - according to other people. Personally, I love early 3D).

While I'm not excited for the remake, I'm super curious about it. Splitting it into different episodes makes no sense to me, because I'm old and accustomed to getting games in full, but whatever. I'm curious if Square-Enix remembers that Cloud is actually not super depressed all the time, and that the game has it's goofy and fun moments. But whatever they do, I don't mind that much. I will always have the original. *shrug*

Oh no, I was talking only about the graphics and how they have improved so much... NOT the play-ability or my desire/willingness to get into them. If i could get all those old Final Fantasy and Dragonquest games I never got to play and a system to play them on (preferably my PC), I would totally play them... starting right from where i left off! :D I just haven't kept up with them in over 20 years, so know nothing about the later games.

Ah, I see. :) Yeah, I can see why people think that way. Personally, I prefer old-school graphic styles to modern ones, mainly because I don't like realistic graphics much. But I still love N64 graphic, which I understand is objectively speaking horrible. So don't mind me.

Also, to go on one last tangent, any Earthbound fan should watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hVuv7mDNqM. Careful though, it contains spoilers for the whole game.

I've seen it and even the most gigantic ''aaaaaaw'' in the universe couldn't do that video justice. Its really good(Even if not always acurate! 8) ) and comes off as really sweet. I'm hoping for a similar one on mother 3. A lot of scenes would lend themselves perfect for such a vid.

The thing about Ness/Sness games is that they tend to age really well. The sprite filled arts style actually has something timeless about them and does strike me much more as something that's a style then merely outdated. Games from that era can be picked up very easily without them feeling to old. Its the old 3d generations that have aged the poorest, in part because it was a very transitionally phase and many games had learn a lot of things again when adjusting to those changes.

Our gaming tastes seem to mesh rather well together :big: FF IX was indeed amazing though I remember IV more fondly then you seemed to(Golbez alone ensures that one).

I'm curious if Square-Enix remembers that Cloud is actually not super depressed all the time, and that the game has it's goofy and fun moments

Who knows. They haven't remembered that bit in ages. The massive FF crossover for example has Cloud just being depressed the entire time with Sephiroth having no other motivation other then mess with Cloud. It made me think the two are rather dull compared to the other heroes and villains.

Your words fill me with joy, Chris.:) The Mother series is beautiful in so many ways. I could write a novel about how it touches me emotionally. I can very easily agree with all of this, though. I love sprites, and the only new games that catch my eye with their graphic are 2D, handdrawn stuff. I'm thinking of stuff like Rayman Legends. These games, though, look amazing to me.

I love FF IX partly because it has my favourite FF world. It feels like a fairytale world to me, with the colorful graphics, the animal-people and, of course, the not-really-but-sort-of medieval setting. The world feels so fun to run around in, and the characters are so charming. When I played it the second time, I had a broken heart, so Freyas story really got to me. She, Steiner, Vivi and Zidane are some of my favourite characters of the whole series. And Chocobo Hot-and-Cold is my favourite minigame of the series.

Who knows. They haven't remembered that bit in ages. The massive FF crossover for example has Cloud just being depressed the entire time with Sephiroth having no other motivation other then mess with Cloud. It made me think the two are rather dull compared to the other heroes and villains.

I developed a humor about all the side-stuff SE created for FF VII, but no way is any of it canon for me. Cloud is one of my favourite FF heroes, because he is actually way more complex and interesting than all this nonsense makes him out to be. He and the other characters grew up in a broken world, and especially he has a great arc of overcoming his problems. The end result felt really satisfying. I would like to say more, but I guess I shouldn't spoil anything.

Sephiroth, on the other hand, I find pretty pathetic. The coolest thing about him is his look, but elsewise. Again, can't go into details here. To me, the way more interesting villain of VII is Shinra, the whole corporation. I am way more interested in the distopian vision of this broken world. Shinra actually scares me, because they speak to my fear of the growing power of corporations. Sephiroth mainly makes me role my eyes. FF VII story is just about so much more than Cloud and Sephiroth.

Sorry, I'm a big FF VII fanboy. :big: I guess I'll stop now.

Oh, right, about FF IV: I don't really know why I don't like it much. There are definitely cool pieces, but something about the world doesn't work for me that well. Or maybe it's just that it is harder than the later games. I generally prefer to breeze through games, especially JRPGs.

The face off between Lucas and the masked man is actually the only scene not involving dead dogs that made me a bit teary eyed  The trick they played with Claus in the credits after that was pretty cute.

If you're mostly into hand drawn graphics then I would suggest Ori and the blind forest. I can't comment on the gameplay but what I've seen about the graphics made it look very stunning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrxOiMLbouM

Shovel knight is a very retro inspired game and uses Ness style graphics. Donky Kong Tropical freeze has modern graphics(to the point you can see the monkey furr) but otherwise aspires to become and succeeds in being the successor of DK country 2.

Same here. I found IX a very refreshing return to FF's routes with its clear medieval world and wooden airships ala 4 and 6 rather then the more futuristic 7 and 9. Zidane is also my favorite FF hero because he's the most fun of the bunch.

I still haven't cleared away my faux pass of not having played FF so I can't comment to much . I'm rather hopeful that both Cloud and Sephiropth will pleasantly surprise me.

I already know about these games (but still, thanks for the info. :)) I played through Shovel Knight some time ago and enjoyed it a lot, on the whole. Though I learned that I hate bottemless pits, and generally instant-death traps in games where I normally can take multiple hits. I'm at the moment playing through DKC Returns 3D, and it's great. Really feels like a DKC game, with all the stuff hidden in the levels.

Ori is a thing of BEAUTY.

I didn't realize that you haven't played VII (I guess I should read a thread before writing :D). Keep in mind that I'm a big fanboy of the game, and that my opinion might not be representative of the actual quality of the game and/or the story. I mean, there is definitely more depth to Cloud (and Sephiroth too) than you might think from seeing only the side-stuff. But it might not be as much and as great as it is in my head. ;) If you like FF in general, you should enjoy VII too, but it might not blow you away as it did me. There are just some things that work very well for me, personally.
