Voting for the Tea Party until Obama leaves the White House.

I was very close to going 3rd-party during the last presidential election. There's one candidate in an election here I'm going to vote for unless he really does something to turn me off of him between now and the election. Other than that, I don't know what I'll do this time.

Go read up stuff from people like Joseph Stiglitz and Ha-Joon Chang. No country has progressed with actual free trade and market only policy.

The joke is that I took it only in my school years in Alberta, Canada while I was living there on a student visa.

I live in Maine, which is probably the most moderate state in the US; we actually have a valid moderate party called the Independent party, which I vote for/support at every election. We've had governors who were independents, and at least one candidate running for governor now is an independent. That one will et my vote!

I am from Canada but since I live so close to the boarder I like to know what is going on, I would say that I know a lot about American politics. If I was able to vote in the USA it would be for the Democrats, I can not support a party that thinks that gay people are scum. Just look at what the republican candidate for governor of New York said on the weekend.

My thoughts exactly. Any politician that wants to institutionalize gay-bashing can stop over my place for a chat. They'll be lucky to exit with the ability to further communicate their bigotry.

If I could vote I'd vote for the Chimpanzee Party because they could get more done than this current congress. If I had to Id go Democrat.

Chimpanzees almost seem like a good alternative at this point.

Unfortunately I don't think there's going to be anyone on the ballot here that's not Republican or Democrat. I certainly have no idea who else is running, if anyone else even is running, so I only know about those candidates. And I don't like either of them.

This is of course one of the greatest weaknesses of the two-party system. Especially lately, the two parties have been getting more and more extreme in their views (and growing furether apart) with no room for moderates, which most everyday people generally tend to be (at least those I know here in Maine). As far as I know though, Maine is the only state that actually has a viable middle-ground third (Independent) party. At least, I never heard of such a party winning the governorship in any other state or sending people to Congress. I think it's time that changed, as I think both Dem and Republican politicians alike are out of touch with everyday people and their concerns.

Look at VT.... the ONLY (i think) independent congressman- good 'ole Bernie Sanders. He, of course, will always caucus with the Democrats. Progressives do very well here in elections for local and state offices.

Maine has had independent members of congress I believe; just not currently. Even so, the two Republicans we have in the Senate are a lot more moderate than the majority of Republicans in Congress are, so that's something. I don't know enough about the representatives (both of whom are Democrats) to figure out how moderate they are though; but again at leat we're balanced poliitically in Congress - two Congressmen from each party. Anyway, IMHO Vermont just helps prove that New Englanders retain a more independent tradition than most.

I'm also voting TEA party, as well as for constitional Cunservitives, & liberterian's; so if that means Republicans get my vote, then thats who I'm voting for, just like Independent's Demicrats, & anybody else that's running.

If you don't mind my asking, what is it about Tea Party candidates that specifically appeals to you?

Jason, I know this question was directed at shortstied, but I just can't help myself.

They help me to purge my system of toxins.... as each and every one makes me want to vomit. They tout populism and libertarianism, yet most support a constitutional amendment that would institutionalize discrimination against ME! Scum, plain and simple- hiding their bigotry behind the thin veil of "family values" - what a joke.

I feel the same way Snobound, which is why I am asking someone who says the support the Tea Partyers *why*? Where's the appeal or a Tugger - even one in what is proibably the most conservative state in the country?

Actually, I live in a state I'd bet is more conservative than Texas. Tea Party candidates don't really work out well in extremely conservative areas. The Tea Party people are libertarian in views. Very right-wing conservatives aren't libertarian at all. The one major Tea Party candidate I know of here finished dead last in the primary. That should tell you all you need to know about how well they fare in these kinds of areas. They're Republicans (usually), but not necessarily conservative.

I personally do like some of the things the Tea Party candidates say with cutting back worthless spending, lower taxes, less government interference, etc. But I'm pretty libertarian myself. My issue with the Tea Party is it seems like they go and find the nuttiest people they can to run for them. I'm almost beginning to believe it's a requirement to be as wacky as possible to be one of their candidates. The one who did try to run here actually wasn't too bad. I liked her. The rest I know of are nuttier than a Snickers bar. But then again, it could be the media spinning it that way. It really is the same 4 or 5 you always hear about.

If only 45% of Americans avoided voting on a non-presidential election, we had a pretty good turnout. Even some presidential elections don't get a turnout that high.

IMHO at least that's because lately in most Presidential elections there is no one worth voting for on either side!
Many people take the philosophy of The Who song "Won't get fooled again", which concludes with the lines: "Meet the New Boss. Same as the Old Boss!"
That song was about revolution rather than elections, but the same principles apparently apply.
I voted for Obama. Now I think I may as well have stayed at home! :worried:

Jason I will not get upset at you only because enough voters were foolish enough in 2008 without your single vote being the cause of him becoming President. I voted for Mitt Romney up until McCain replaced him with Sarah Palin. That arrogant overbearing governess ruined a lot of carefully gathered votes by employing the race card against Obama in the McCain-Palin vs Obama-Biden race in the polls.
