4 Big brush fires at camp pendleton

Postby burner59 » Sat Sep 15, 2012 3:03 pm

Camp Pendleton, one of the major West Coast training bases, accidentally sparked a fire near Marine training bases, which created a few other brush fires, which are currently letting off major smoke which, from what I can see from my house which is just about fifty miles away, the smoke is now "touching," the clouds.

Just warning anyone who lives near, and here are two links, which are saying that it is safe, but then again, there is lots of smoke.

The Marines set it off during training exercises-if the Marines are ever fighting somebody in our country and are firing bombs, they better not be the ones to set off fires.

thanks for the up date though I live no where near there its nice that you thought to post about this.
As far as I can tell it MAY have been the marines themselves who started this. I too have A LOT of experiance in fighting this sort of brush fire as many o times when on a live fire range I have seen the tracers catch the brush around the target areas on fire. If you were part of the range cadre YOU would be part of the crew turned into firemen .. that is until range control said back off and let the local fire dept handle it. If THAT was the case the range would have gone cold and it would be several hours til it went hot again.

I just hope that anyone close to Pendleton is alright

I called up my friend a couple of minutes ago who works for the OCFD and he reported that the fires are now out and that the Marines were firing 125MM bombs and machine guns for target practice near the base, too close, and the area was fired on repeatedly in 103 degree heat, so then again, fire is inevitable.

Yeah in that kinda heat the tracers would have NO problem starting something if you have even the slightest breeze before long you could have a MAJOR brush fire on your hands
been there done that on BOTH sides of the fence.
Have been on the cadre helping to contain the fire, AND had to explain to my CO WHY my platoon was kicked off the range because of nearly burning it down now Animals big AND small straying on to a live fire range well..... that's ANOTHER story altogether :big:

Thanks for the update
