Drew

Drew sat with her legs folded beneath her in the middle of a semi-circle of teenage girls on the floor around their leader, John. He was dressed in a pair of light blue canvas shoes but no socks, light blue denim shorts, and an orange and a pink t-shirt. She was dressed in a black, long-sleeved plush leotard, white cotton tights, and a pair of pink ballerina shoes and her ash-blonde, waist-long hair hung loose, all of which were in accordance with regulations.
Like the rest of them, she hoped, hoped so much she thought she’d explode, it was to be her turn tonight.

John looked around at the girls, sitting on the floor, looking up at him. These ten girls were all that was left of the fifty-or-so girls that had joined his group a couple of weeks ago. The rest had either gotten tired of it, or he had simply kicked them out because of their awkward behaviour towards him and/or the rest of the group. He didn’t want anyone to think she was his favourite group-member, even though he did have one.
“Such anticipation in their eyes,” he astonished thought. “It’s always like this with this group! They know what is going to happen to the one I choose; they know she’ll be have a long, difficult night ahead of her, and it’s as if they don’t care! I bet the lucky one has to tell the rest of them every minute, juicy detail tomorrow before breakfast, and God help her if she forgets anything! It’s a pity I have made them swear an oath of silence in my presence; they all have such lovely voices!”

He had barely said: “Right girls, tonight will be a bit different than the other nights.” In their eyes, he could already see a higher level of competitiveness than ever before. “And rightly so,” he thought. “After all, tonight’s activities will determine everything.”
“I will split the group in half and you will tie your partners’ hands behind her back as well as her ankles. Then the one who is tied has to escape. When that is done, you switch places. The couples with the slowest over all time after each round will be eliminated. I expect this to be an exciting competition, so please don’t let me down!”
After having divided the group, he put a whistle in his mouth and blew.

As she had hoped, Drew had been paired with her best friend, Sandra. They knew each other since before camp, and Drew knew she’d do a good job. She only hoped her friend wouldn’t become too ambitious (which actually had happened on more than one occasion in the past) and cost them the victory.
Before they started, they gave each other reassuring smiles, and it seemed to have worked, because they came in second, beaten only by the camp’s top student duo that had, as usual, been paired together. One of the pairs who were eliminated came from Drew and Sandra’s cabin, so they had, in time, come to know each other quite well.
“Better them, than us!” Drew nevertheless thought, as she saw the sobbing girls being escorted out of the room.

Drew and Sandra found themselves to be the constant runner-up team, until there were only the team of top-students, who happened to be sisters, and they left.
“As I might have guessed from the start, there are only you four left,” John snorted.
“O.K; so let’s change the rules slightly, shall we? Now, instead of working as teams, you will compete individually and I will tie you up; other than that, everything is as it was before; the last two are eliminated.”
After he had tied Drew up, she noticed he had positioned the knot on the rope around her wrists in a place where it would be more difficult, however not impossible, to get at it.
“Right; nod when you are ready!” John said.
The girls looked at each other and nodded with hard-set faces and the whistle sounded.

It seemed to be a close competition, until suddenly Drew noticed the two A-students seemed to get into trouble; and lots of it too, by the looks of it. Then, she realized; they had never let anyone else tie them up, and now she understood why; they weren’t nearly as good as they had seemed, they had just been used to being tied up by the other one and now, being tied by another person, they were lost, toast, finished, finito, whatever you want to call it! She could have laughed out loud, when she realized that. She looked over at Sandra, and saw she had also come to the same conclusion.

The end came quickly, and with Drew and Sandra as the winners. The others were let back in, and John had kind of an improvised award ceremony, with caps, scarves, pins and a free stay next year being second and third prizes. But first prize was truly unbelievable! It was a week’s stay, for two, at Johns’ farm where Drew and her guest would have the chance to learn all they could from the Master himself, as well as being invited back next year, but as his assistants.
“You have permission to speak,” John told her.
Drew turned to Sandra:” It would be cruel not to ask, if you want to come too,” she said, adding: “No, don’t bother answering; I can, by the grin in your face, deduce you really want to come along.”
“OK!” John said. “Then, it is settled. We leave as soon as I’ve finished the paper work, and you’ve called your parents, to tell them you won’t be coming home for another week. I’ll write down my phone-number and address, in case there is an emergency, and they want to get in touch with you. But do let them know you won’t be able to call them every day; you’ll be far too busy. “
Whazzzz up!.
