Recommended Reading Lists

Postby Jason Toddman » Tue Jun 24, 2014 9:24 am

Is there a way to set up something - perhaps in a user's profile - where he can list some of his stories (including those in Archives) that he'd like to 'advertise' for people interested in his/her style to read. Some of us have been writing here for years, and it might be useful for people interested in reading more stories from a particular author if they can find it in one place, rather than do a search (often a ponderous one for more prolific writers like myself or xtc) through all our combined posts. Perhaps something along the lines of Search User's Posts, only listing threads started by that user in the story sections. Is that a doable possibility to make this site more reader-friendly?

Its a great idea but I believe that we can post at most 5 IRLs (if that's the right word) in any one post.
Is there a way of linking using a statement such as "More from this Author"?
I can't think of a way because we don't have our own "area" of the site.
Ah! I see what you mean by user's profile! Perhaps we could have a "Top five" section or a limited selection at the author's discretion? A full list could be very tedious for any potential reader and put them off completely!

I suppose I could spare space under the "Mission Statement" for a "More from this Author" link.

Yes, I was thinking merely of a short list; the stories the author considers his best of the best. It's also something he/she can update and change from time to time. And those really interested can either search for more then or ask for for a list of links... something we could prepare in advance for anyone who is interested as separate threads (with 5 links per post) for the more prolific and/or ego-maniacal of us (like myself  ). In fact i did this a while back when someone was curious about more of my stories, though i imagine that list needs an update by now.

I've just posted a list of links to my "Top Five" to "Tugs Links"
I then changed my signature to include a link to that post.
Let's see whether there is any reaction.

I do agree with Andrew, though: it might be nice to see who favourite authors have as friends.

I like what you've done xtc. It looks pretty neat.

Thanks BF,
I think it's probably more visible there than if we have a "special" section for it. People don't often stray from their usual paths.
I'll check my "hits" for a few weeks and see whether it has any effect.

easy--- after 39 we never have birthdays -- only anniversaries of the 39th so we never hit 40. I know under that logic 39 holds a special place in your pension (grin).

Nope! φ (phi) Incredible number: golden section et al.
Or for those who prefer sums: (sq.rt. 5+1)/2

But now: back to the subject . . .

Hello.

I know their is a built in feature to add in a custom field to a users profile, but I cant remember (and am not going to look it up) what limitations you have on this field, but guess it might be possible to add in a field like your interests and stuff where you have a large character limit and it is displayed on more than 1 line if needed. I also remember that you can make the custom field not visible to people when they make their account which would be good as to not confuse them. Not too sure how this would handle links though, apart from that i would look into mods but with this sites past record of installing them i would say that its unlikely to be implemented.
