Proud to be a pleb

Here’s one for the Brits.

N. B. “Nob” is not wrongly spelt. It is short for “noble” not “knob-head” even though in this case the two terms are almost synonymous.

A word of explanation for my foreign readers.

The Tory Chief Whip (The official responsible for discipline within the Conservative Party) insulted a police officer who was trying to ensure compliance with traffic regulations as he was leaving Downing Street. He (allegedly) swore at him and called him a pleb. Although, as a working class man, I am proud to be a pleb, from his privileged mouth it demonstrated his contempt for people whom he considers to be his inferiors.

Self importance is one thing. Contempt for the working class is entirely another.

Something that has gone on for years and will continue to go on. It is in the Tory DNA.

Such contempt for the working class seems to be an increasing problem in the US too; especially among conservative Republican politicians regardless of what certain Fox News fans say.

Here in Australia, Tory politicians like to pretend they are part of the working class, but they can never quite carry it off. They pose for photo ops having a beer with the “plebs” at the local pub but end up looking stiff and uncomfortable and wishing they were sipping expensive sherry at the gentleman’s club.

A funny example occurred a few years ago when the wife of the conservative opposition leader announced how multicultural she and her husband were, learning a foreign language. Every day they were taught a new word or phrase by their Greek cleaning lady. They couldn’t understand the derision.

And for the sake of the ignorant Tory Chief Whip... In the ancient Roman republic, the plebs were an organized political force to be reckoned with. If the aristocrats didn’t give into their demands, they held a general strike and literally abandoned the city, camping outside until they were begged to come back.
Words, like Nature, half reveal and half conceal the soul within.

BOOM! BOOM!

Yes, ever since Thatcher, various Tory regimes have tried to make strikes illegal. To me the term "illegal strike" vies with "legal war" for oxymoron of the century.
