What's your favorite Skyrim build?

Postby mikeybound » Sun Apr 15, 2012 11:20 am

Title says it all! I'll start.

Archary to get the jump on them.
One handed so you can still dual wield.
Destruction because it's COOL!
Restoration for obvious reasons.
Alteration for the protection spells and magic resistance.
Light armor because it frees up your invatory.
And finally...enchanting and smithing! These two can make a level 10 character as tough as level 50 :-D

Not sure what you mean by Skyrim build, but my favorite things about the game are:
Sneak (especially with archery) for the quick take-down in guerilla warfare.
Two-handed because you can do a lot of follow up damage very quickly against foes who manage to reach you; especially when there are several at once. It's easier and apparently more effective than dual-wielding two one handed weapons at once; at least, it is for ME.
Irresistible-Force shout - I think it's funny when you blow a mouthy city guard right off a high city wall in Markath and (even if the resulting fall kills him) you don't even get charged with attacking let alone killing them because that shout doesn't count as an attack for some reason!
Perk that allows fifteen times damage for successful one-handed sneak attack; it's enough to kill almost anyone if you have even a halfway-decent one-handed weapon!
The dungeons have so much more variety and realism than in previous Elder Scrolls games
Nice musical score in places, including some recycled from Morrowind
Enchanting weapons and armor, especially with the duo-effect perk. Can make a huge difference in combat effectiveness; especially against bosses and dragons.
Dare to be different... and make a difference.

I actually meant how you play your character. Like skills and bonuses. Still, looks like you covered that Jason!

Okay. Wasn't sure.
OTOH I wasn't too impressed by the magical aspects (except the shouts); as usual it's way too hard to build up any useful skill levels in some magical skills - especially Destruction, and the ward spells are all but useless (even the worst shield is better and less awkward to use). IMO the only really useful one to a steath-using warrior was Restoration, though sometimes using Conjuration provided a good diversion when I was already discovered. Trouble is, a lot of times what I try to conjure doesn't appear at all in this game!!! If you're not tilted at just the right angle, it's a waste of time and magicka and leaves you too exposed to attack. So most of my magical skills never got developed much. Weapons and armor however never let you down if you have the skills to use them!!!
Pickpocket is also difficult to build up and IMO almost useless, as usually the only persons I want to pickpocket oarethe ones I'm about to kill anyway, and therefore pickpocketing only poses an unnecessary risk of being discovered before I cause any damage.

Just look up the master level spells! Heavy risk, but the prize!!!!!!

I mostly went with destruction and conjuration spells, i also invested some points in speech to make more money although looking back that was a bit of a waste since the dark brotherhood gave me more gold then i ever needed.

Perhaps, but AFAIK you have to get your skills up to master level before those spells are ever even available, and that can be a chore! It's something my character may more safely develop now that he is highly skilled in combat, but trying to do so earlier would only have slowed his combat progress and made him more liable to encounter enemies he was not ready to handle. IOW I found it expedient to concentrate on the most useful (combat, supplemented with sneak) skills first and deliberately use others as little as possible so that even as early as Level 10 he was skilled enough as a sneaky archer that few foes ever survive to get up close and personal in combat in the first place.
By level 50 though, he's tough enough so he can afford to let enemies beat up on him as he whittles away at them with novice level Destruction spells; building up those armor and restoration skills at the same time! :D
There are other valid strategies too of course, but based on the way the skills stack up relative to one another I simply think mine is the most effective one. Gameplay is a tad slower perhaps but I never get killed! :quirk:

That's great if you can do it, but that's probably the most difficult way of getting powerful enough to handle whatever comes your way. I tried that with a new character but I kept getting wiped out - even by frikking mudcrabs - partly because I continually ran out of magicka much too quickly!
Of course, if you take up magic using skills after you're a Terminator-level kick-ass fighter (as I'll be doing whenever there are expansions to quest through), it's a lot safer and you still rise in level training those skills you didn't use before.

At the start i was a bit annoyed by the low magic cap too but that's what enchanting is for :big: and when i got the archmage robes all problems just dissapeared.

It quite rewarding to wreak havoc and doom with a faitfull dremora lord and storm atromarch, or my favorite minion Zombie Ulfric!

I may build up my Level 60 Nord warrior that way when the expansions or DLC are available, since he's already almost as powerful as he can get with the fighting skills anyway. Zombie Ulfric, huh? Interesting thought! :big:

Yes, I figured that you had; what I meant was that this sounds like it was a fun idea of yours. I'll have to try that sometime; after all, he's still laying dead in his throne room even though I killed him some time ago (I think his head is still intact; I'm not sure though as I do use two-handed war hammers an awful lot and they tend to smash a lot of heads).
They're not very good about clearing away dead bodies in that game world, are they?
Thing is, I can barely conjure flame atronachs as yet - so it'll be a long, long while before I acquire the spell dead thrall. But AFAIK his corpse will still be waiting there for me when I'm ready to 'jump start' it.

So this is a bit of topic but its still about skyrim so i hope you don't mind.

Speaking of Ulfric reminded me of the civil war questline....or rather the masive flame wars raging in their name  So i was wondering who chose which(Stormcloak/imperial) in their main game and why?.

Personally i went with the Imperials for a number of reasons.
1. I find the cloaks, ulfirc and their motivation for fighting about as sympathetic as a deepsea angler fish dressed in a SS uniform
2. My original reason: The imperials are romans killing vikings. It can't get more awesome.
3. I play as an elf and the cloaks are a tad racist.

Re: What's your favorite Skyrim build?

Postby Jason Toddman » Mon Apr 16, 2012 11:28 am

I did the same thing as you did Chris; and for basically the same reasons. Also, the idea of having to betray the Jarl of Whiterun (Bulgruff, or whatever his name was) after he'd treated me so nice didn't set well with me at all. I almost didn't though, since at the beginning that woman Imperial captain over in Helgun was a little too eager to chop my head off, and in fact she was the first character I killed in the game!
If I play the game over as a new character (as I likely will eventually), I'd probably make all different decisions for variety's sake; side with the Stormcloaks, concentrate on being a magic user first, be a vampire instead if a werewolf, kill off the Dark Brotherhood rather than join them, and so on.

The dawnstar leader, mmmh i did think he was an idiot but i never heard him say anything racist. Might be because i barely spoke to him.

This obviously involves a quest I missed doing because I never got my Destruction level anywhere near high enough to get it.
I will have to rectify that situation ASAP! :awesome:

If this isn't off topic, has anyone tried any of the new mods that have become available for this game?
Some look pretty interesting, but my experiences with mods with Oblivion were mixed at best (many caused unexpected effects that affected game-play) and so far I haven't tried any made for Skyrim.
So I was wondering if anyone here has tried any Skyrim mods; if so, which ones and how well did you like them?

This is all so off topic, I don't even care anymore lol!
But yah. I use console Skyrim, so I don't get mods. There was a video of someone making 40,000 roles of cheese fall down a mountain! Wish I could do that :-(

Re: What's your favorite Skyrim build?

Postby Jason Toddman » Wed Apr 25, 2012 6:53 am

I have never done it myself but I know how to! :big:
Do this only when you are ready for the actual avalanche and are in the right spot, facing downhill. Better save your game first too.
Click the console command button (marked by ~)
type player.additem 64B33, 40000 (this will give you 40,000 cheese wheels, which of course will render you unable to run)
access your inventory and drop all 40,000 cheeses, and presumably down they'll all go.
If you'd like some alto wine along with that cheese, type player.additem C5349 40000 and then drop those too. 8)
I may try this myself sometimes when I'm feeling zany; sounds like fun.
Edit: Nah, forget it. Just tried it. Doesn't work. You only expel one wheel at a time. Don't know how to make them appear in bunches after all. Oh well. :(
