SPL Initiation(mm/m)

Postby TUfriend » Sun Nov 20, 2011 12:50 pm

If you would like to read my previous story, "Never Underestimate the Power of Toilet Paper", click here.

This story happened a few weeks ago on a scout trip to Philadelphia.

A little description of myself, I am 16, brown, short hair, green eyes, 5'6", a little chunky and a "baby face with one mole on each cheek" as my best friend tells me.

In October, I had become SPL of my troop(the main scout leader). On this trip, the younger scouts thought it was necessary to "initiate" me, although they all like me.

Saturday night, me, my assistant senior patrol leader(ASPL) and the 11 other scouts slept in one room with one father while the 5 leaders slept in another room. (I'm not going to bother with names since it doesn't matter)

Since we had no heat yet in the cabin, it took a while for me to fall asleep, but when I did, I was out like a log.

I forget exactly what I dreamed about but I do remember it was a TUG where my hands were behind my back and my feet were tied together. Then, my alarm started to whisper me awake. Suddenly I felt a draft crawl up my spine. Thats weird, I thought, I don't usually open my sleeping bag in my sleep. Then, I went to get out of my sleeping bag. It didn't take long to notice, my hands were stuck together behind my back. I tried to get my legs out but they were taped too! I tried to scream, but there was tape plastered on my mouth. I looked for the father who had been sleeping to my left, but he must have left because I didn't see him.

"Having fun?" on of the younger scouts asked.

I decided not to give him the satisfaction of me "mmph"ing.

"This is your initiation as our leader," a different scout answers the question I had been thinking to myself. They went on to explain how they had woken up early, after the father who had gone to take a shower left, and opened up my sleeping bag and duct taped my wrists and legs together.

It was starting to get into the morning and the leaders would be waking up soon. I could feel my wrists sweating and the duct tape losing stickiness. Unfortunately, I still couldn't escape. My heart started to play like a tribal drum. Adrenaline went streaming through my body. The leaders would wake up soon and I didn't want to be laughed at or get in trouble for letting a few twelve year olds tie me up. It must have been the adrenaline because I tore the duct tape off my skin. The younger scouts said it was like Superman breaking free of kryoptonite handcuffs. I broke through 30 wraps of tape according to them. Then I threw out the duct tape and went on with my morning.

The younger scouts did get in a lot of trouble with the scoutmaster even though I didn't tell anyone.

This story was written on my iPod so spelling mistakes are anticipated even though I try to find most of them.

I love comments by the way, good or bad.

Scouting has changed over the years. Initiations, which were once a staple and a "rite of passage," are now banned. Hell, today, they even frown upon getting the new kids around a campfire, and chanting "Oh wha ta goo si am" at an increasing tempo until they realize they are chanting "Oh what a goose I am." It saddens me to say that I think the scouts have been "feminized" and "wussified," and are a far cry from what they were in their heyday in the baby boomer years from 1953, when the first generation of baby boomers started cub scouts, to the beginning of a long and slow decline, which started in 1972, with a revamped program that allowed a scout to attain Eagle without having earned the Camping Merit Badge. (There were a lot of complaints, and it was changed within six months, but, in my opinion, scouting never recovered from that blunder.)

They also re-designed the uniform which had distinguished the scouts since the late 30's, and had been worn for 40 years. And since 1972, there have been several uniform re-designs. It seems that they can't settle on one design, and keep it for more than a few years. On top of that, in my opinion, they all looked crappy, compared to the uniform I wore as a scout.

The old uniforms were cool but now a days i like the new ones and find them cool. And yea i agree i came in at the tail end of the whole hazzing thing. i dont remember any thing bad if at all but, i have heard some troops still do it. One of my friends told me bout one camp out where all the older scouts hung all the first years by their underwear. So im at least glad to see that they are still a few that do it. But i miss the days when we had kids walking between camp sites looking for a lefthanded smoke bender. That was always enjoy able.

But yea from what i hear we have gotten wussier. I miss the days when eagle was truely earned and not just " oh uve done all the paper work so there for you get it" That is the one thing that really ticks me off.

Yeah, my troop only approves of projects that involve actual construction unless you're almost 18. Since I have two years, my eagle project involves building a retaining wall and building a patio.

We used to send them off to the waterfront for "50 feet of shoreline," or "the keys to the oarlocks." We also had them look for the "keys to the outdoor chapel," and to the air marina/air strip across the lake, for "a bucket of prop wash," or "50 feet of flight line."

When I was in service, and stationed on an Air Force Base, we used to send the new kids (pay grades E-2/E-3, and even a couple of 2nd lieutenants) for the prop wash and flight line, too. An amazing number of them fell for it.

Our troop cheer was "frowned upon" by the district and council people, but we got away with it for two reasons: First, we were good (and having a membership that fluctuated between 44 and 52, helped, too) We were in the top two in district competitions, and top five in council competitions. The other reason, was that our assistant senior patrol leader was the youngest son of the deputy commanding general of the army post where my dad was stationed. He was an Eagle Scout, West Point graduate, sat on both the district and council boards, and if the district or council ever needed help or support, all they needed to do, was pick up the phone, and call him.

But in today's scouts, even with all that going for us, I think the district and council people would be all over us for the cheer. It went like this:

"Troop 27, we're the best!
We take what's ours, and steal the rest!
We chew tobacco; smoke cigars,
And push old ladies in front of cars."

We were a rowdy bunch of hell raisers, but we were good, we knew our stuff, and we had fun.

hahahaha 50 feet of shore line lol i forgot bout that one. Yea see those are the are like all the stories my old scout master used to tell. I always loved hearing bout them. I seemed like giving wedgies to the new ones. Most troop around here still come up with some pretty funny and original. but yea times have really changed.

Did any of them ever have the presence of mind to tell you there weren't no such thing (at least, as a tangible thing that could be retrieved)?
And if so, what would your reaction have been? Maybe they knew it was a wild goose chase but just didn't want to get yelled at? I remember someone trying to make me fetch a 'mobius strip' (at school though not in the scouts, which I never joined), and - knowing what that was - just stared at them and rolled my eyes.

Usually, after a couple of hours, they'd figure it out. More than that, and somebody would tell them. But they'd go to the waterfront, the nurse's office, the chow hall, staff lounge, arts and crafts, woodcraft, and the camp director's lodge, plus a few other places, all trying to find the "item" we wanted.

Then, to add insult to injury, that night, or the next night, we'd take them on a snipe hunt.

It is fun if you like sitting with a partner in the darkest woods, one holding a gunny sack, and the other, banging a couple of sticks together, and calling "here snipe, here snipe," while the rest of us are back in camp, laughing our asses off.

Every now and then, somebody caught something. Once, it was a pair of wild kittens, and one other time, it was a possum, but I don't remember anyone EVER catching a snipe.

No, people do not catch on very quickly. Sending someone for a "long weight" works quite well too. You'd be surprised how many people have used said long weight recently and passed it on to someone else!

Maybe this was lost in translation from British to American, but I don't see why a long weight would be hard to find. A barbell for instance would be a long weight. :geek:

Try changing the spelling of "weight". Experienced practitioners can keep the victims hanging around for quite some time.

Unless they're literal minded like me and simply find them a barbell (aka dumb-bell, which is probably what they would then call me) or some similar object that is long but heavy. :big:

My troop is the largest in Rhode Island (TROOP 6!) so we needed to do something. So, we elected a new staff (SPL and mulitple ASPLs) at the June campout, and this year, at Yawgoog (SANDY BEACH!) We, as troop tradition has done every year, had the SPL pie the ASPLs,
and then they pied him. Best part: this was on Friday night's campfire, the one where the parents are there to watch.
ps. typed this on a 3ds. spelling errors may occur.
I don't care.
