Afghanistan Woman Tortured and Killed for Burning a Quaran - A Crime She Did Not Commit

I found this news article recently. Rather than relay the story here, the video in the article does a good job of explaining the situation, so I'll just leave it at that. Although, be warned, the content is graphic.

I will say that seeing something like this really puts your life (for me anyway) in perspective. The country I live in does have it's problems. Lord knows where to even begin. But at least I don't have to wake up each day afraid of this sort of radical barbarity happening in my community.

The fact that it is 2016 and this kind of stuff is still happening is extremely disheartening to me. I get angry at people for having ill-found beliefs or using religion against someone else. But in those situations their actions are rarely above words. Nobody, at least that I have seen, is gathering by the hundreds to stone a woman in the streets while the police turn a blind eye. Seriously, this kind of stuff makes you think.

In terms of socialisation that's simply what is normal and expected in that country, an Afghan woman may be just as shocked as you are now to find out that in the West we don't execute paedophiles. She may find the practice of lethal injection to be cruel and barbaric. Obviously I can't speak for the women of the Middle East but I'm trying to say that "normal" is a relative term.

That is an utterly ridiculous thing to say.

I admit I didn't read the article so I don't know the details but I can guess what was done to that poor woman, not condoning murder in any shape or form, I'm simply pointing out to snickerdoodle that while you he and I are shocked by such things, it's just a fact of life in certain Middle Eastern countries.

I'm not trying to be smart or clever, that's just sociology.

I'm inclined to agree with you in your assertion that normality is relative from country to country. However, I would not write these instances off as a fact of life because such a stance reinforces the belief that these types of situations are beyond help, and will always be the case.

Simply put, what is normal is not always right. It used to be considered normal in the United States for one human being to own another human being as property, and treat them as such.

Now, I'm not saying that you're okay with this happening. Because I doubt you are. You're just not as shocked because such behavior is expected. And I understand that. But I don't think anything as atrocious as this should just be brushed off.

No you're right, it doesn't shock me, just makes me sad, unfortunately I understand that the world is full of sad things like this...

But remember, for every person out there who takes pleasure in bringing misery to people's lives, there's also a person who takes pleasure in bringing joy :)
