I like the old original star trek better because kirk got tied up sometimes from alien babes. you can catch the series early in the am on weekends sometimes.

I've never seen any of the 769 versions of Star Trek, ever. I like the Star Wars movies all right, but am not one of the big fans who dresses up and goes to conventions or collects things or anything like that.

Strictly personal opinion, of course:
Geek = Star Trek
Nerd = Star Wars
Gene Roddenberry = The Eternal Light of the Universe
George Lucas = The Devil

Never really watched the old Star Trek with Shatner, I prefer Voyager and TNG. The new movie was good. I can't say I knew half of the references, but I enjoyed for what it was.

I prefer Star Wars, and I prefer the old trilogy...after Jar Jar Binks hit the screen, I knew watching the next 2 movies would be like getting raped by a horse. That's just my personal opinion.

As for Sci Fi in general, Roddenbury's Andromeda, Sanctuary, Stargate(SG1, Atlantis, Universe), and Firefly, those are my favorites.

Hope no one minds if I revive the subject after it's suffered apparent neglect for over three months. :geek:
I like all the Star Trek series except Enterprise (too many of the initial episodes' plots hinged on Captain Archer making some bone-headed decision; the combination of which should have gotten him court-martialed) which was boring and pretentious IMHO. I like the original Trek best despite its obvious flaws (most unavoidable) becajuse none of the later series ever had quite the same sense of wonder the original had (Of course, I was only 10 when the show first started and I was more easily impressed).
As for Star Wars, the first trilogy was awESOME. The second trilogy was awFUL! I mean, once Anakin went to the dark side, he sure fell awfully fast, didn't he? And all that whining about people dying! What a wusss! He begins the movie whining about mortality and ends it by killing a bunch of kids. What an a**hole!!! I'd have enjoyed the movie better if he'd killed Jar Jar Binks instead! THAT would have been worth seeing! :twisted: And why would a DROID have asthma?! Do droids breathe? Gawd!!!
AND imho the books for EITHER series stopped being even remotely interesting a long, long time ago.

agreed. But, grevious is a cyborg, half machine, half man, so he would retain his lungs, heart, brain, eyes, and possibly a set of muscles .

There can be mechanical heart and lungs (exist in the present even), and bionic eyes are possible too. So yeah, if you're getting cyborged, might as well swap out your defective parts, no?

Well, all that was not explained in the movie. All I could see was that some ugly droid was coughing what should have been non existent lungs out like it was a chain smoker with advanced TB. And that wasn't even the worst part of the movie. Several other parts were plain boring dialog! Dialog is fine, but it should accompanied by action like it usually was in the first trilogy. Worst of all was the acting - especially the one playing Anakin Skywalker. *Zzzzzzzzzzzz!*
But Star Wars doesn't win the worst loser award by any means. You want the worst, let's talk STAR TREK: INSURRECTION and STAR TREK: NEMESIS! OMG!!! :x

Post writing warning: Okay, I deviated into general scifi whining here :P

That's what happens when you try to keep milking something that has long been finished. My favorite example is Sliders. That show I like even more than Star Wars *fends off angry mob with mod abuse* but slowly as they started changing the main cast it started deteriorating. Now, while season 4 had some nice ideas, and I guess I even eventually warmed up to Colin, season 5 just broke it. Duplicates that don't look or act like each other at all? I understand not every series can live off leading actors leaving, but sometimes you can just tell that something shouldn't go on. Season 5 ended with a humongous cliffhanger, but I really wasn't hoping for a season 6 after all that. Ironically enough, season 4's ending wasn't that cliffhanging. If anything, the cliffhanger at 5's end seems like the writers' deathbed pleas for the network not to pull the plug.

So yeah, I deviate the subject (again) but my point is that all scifi series turn to crap at some point unless they were cut off really early *coughfireflycoughcough*. I only have 2 counterexamples: Dr. Who, a series whose lifespan is probably longer than your top 5 combined (when you lose crap overmilking) and is still ongoing; and there's Farscape, a really great series which was killed after S4 because of funding reasons even though I'm pretty sure they could have done one more season and wrap it up without delving into the pit of horrible preposterous continuations.

Here now, Haloguy! I LIKED Star Trek IV - even if it WAS a two-hour commercial for save the whales. Even if it helped begin the extremely overused plot device of time travel on later Star Trek series. And Scotty got to whine about the engines yet again. And Spock acted stupid about human culture and smart about everything else at the same time. And Shatner overacted. And there was a pointless side plot about Chekov, and that whole Whaleprobe thing was a retread of V'Ger, Nomad, and a coupla other things, and they got to diss 20th century humanity yet again (why are they so tolerant of alien cultures that demand human sacrifice but so contemnptuous of US? Especially that snarky Mr. Spock!) and that boring and stereotypically bitchy woman scientist and stereotypically rude 20th century urbanites in general and...
Aw, Hell. I guess that movie WAS crap!

I agree that that, Haloguy. It was an excellent episode. I read the original script too. Respite what its contentious author Harlan Ellison said about it though, I like what was actually produced much better than his original version. IMHO most of what he complained hardest about being deleted actually added nothing to the story at all.

Star Trek TNG... only game in town. Perfect combination of sci-fi tech and drama. Original Trek, even before the Net, was obviously cheeseball- serious queso here. What they show and how they act in TNG far outdoes the original, the tech looks good, the characters aren't wooden, and it's not a big repetition of "Scotty, beam us down!" "Captain, I do not think that is logical. The atmosphere is 80% methane." "Well, what do you think, Bones?" "Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a chemist! Who cares about 80% methane, anyway, it's that or 78% nitrogen!" :geek: On and on.

TNG uses some real science, is tailored toward believability and intellect rather than acting as another "Lost In Space", and has superior acting (besides Kirk, Spock, and Bones, who are funny). Star Wars started great, went to good, back to great, and you can have episodes 1-2-3... no Harrison Ford, no way...
Is it any different to be tied up vs being tied down? One of the great things about English, its flexibility :p

Real science? You MUST be joking!!! Most of the things said on TNG is pure techno-babble! At least the original TRek used real scientific terms a lot whereas TNG almost never did - something the producers admitted thnemselves! The rest of it (including the acting) is a matter of taste, and please remember that special effects tech was non existent in the 1960's and Star Trek did the best with what it had. But please don't tell me TNG uses real science. It does nothing of the kind!!! :roll:

Yes that was a good show too if a bit downbeat and relying too much on mysticism for my personal liking. Also hated the way they left certain plot threads dangling and unresolved in the end like that, too!

I still wanna say: Doctor Who, and Farscape if we aren't too picky on the longrunningness. Though the thread is mostly on this specific rivalry so I prolly shouldn't delve further :P
