Fall 1966

Olympics at the Plains

Part I

The Plain
(m/m)

In my last story, we have played a game in the forest where the objective is to basically capture all the opposing team’s members. Our group consisted of Andrew (10), David (10), Angela (9), and I, while our opponents were Frank (9), Donald (9), Chester (10), and Jay (10). We easily won that game.

After lunch that Saturday, we rested a bit on the living room to let the food settle down in our stomach. Frank, Donald, and I swapped stories with each other, while Andrew settled down with a book with us, occasionally giving a comment or two about whatever it was we were talking about but generally staying out of our conversation. David, Chester, Henry (8), Barney (7), and Jay were on the back porch, playing with marbles. After a while, Andrew got bored with his book and joined in with our talk. Angela, my sister Betty (8), my cousin and Donald’s sister Maggie (8), and David’s sisters Nancy (8) and Cathy (7) were in the kitchen helping my mother and aunt wash the dishes and clean the mess. My father and uncle were out on town, and won’t be back until later in the afternoon.

At about a quarter past three, all of us boys went to the plain between the back of our home and the forested hills where we play our games. The plain from our fence to the foot of the forested hills was about twenty yards. There were no trees on that plain, because the trees were cut decades before to make room for farmland. We owned that farmland, even if we no longer farmed on it, and it was simply regarded by our family as a gigantic back lawn which we scrupulously maintained. We picnicked on it, we played on it, we celebrated there. There was a barn at the end of the plain besides the foothills that testified to the fact that it was formerly a farm. We now use that to store firewood that we collected in the forest and which we used either for our fireplace, or to have bonfires whenever we feel like it. There was a gazebo that my father and uncle built in the center, and there was a storage shed near the fence of our house.

We were lucky that our houses were at the edge of our little community—we were close enough that our school, our church, the offices of my father and uncle, and our main commercial area were within walking distance from our house, but our houses faces that little civilization only in front. At the back was a wilderness—the next house in that direction was half a mile, and we would usually bicycle, or for the adults, drive, to visit our distant neighbors. Our closest neighbors, the family of Angela, David, Chester and Jay, etc., were also within walking distance of us, but they were surrounded by other houses and buildings. So by default, our place because the playground of the kids in our little circle of close family friends.

One of the games us boys would conduct was racing from the fence of our house at back, to the fence of the plain at the foothills. The girls usually would simply stay away or act as cheering spectators, shouting themselves hoarse, or, though rarely, they’d run against each other, but it was never boys against girls.

About an hour into our games, we were getting bored. Many of us were filthy—we slipped, stumbled, rolled on the grass—thank God it was dry. Someone suggested, I think it was Frank, to have a race with their hands tied behind their back. It was enthusiastically taken up by the rest of us. During this time, the girls, also bored, having finished with their chores, came out to watch our little competition, and in some ways, indirectly participate. All the girls were wearing either skirts or dresses, either to the knee or just below it.

The first one to compete on these ‘run while your hands were tied behind you’ race was Chester and Jay. They were among the fastest kids in our town. I tied Chester’s hands behind him using a large folded handkerchief. I tied his hands horizontally then vertically. It wasn’t the best job, but we decided that if someone had somehow untied his hands while racing, he automatically loses.

Andrew tied Jay’s wrists crossed with a piece of rope. He tied it in crisscross fashion, then cinched it to ensure proper tightness.

“Now, remember the rules!” Andrew began, although we all knew it already. “You must race until the fence on the other side of the plain, then run back here. The first one who returns wins. Now, when you reach the other side, someone would hand you a baton. You must have it in your tied hands in order to win. If you drop it, you must pick it up.”

Angela was selected to hand the “baton” which is just a piece of stick, to Jay, while David was chosen to hand the “baton” to Chester.

“Ready!” I shouted at the top of my voice, and Chester and Jay readied themselves for the race.

“Go Chet!” Betty shouted.

“Go Jay! You can do it!” Henry cheered.

“Set!” I shouted as they got ready.

“We’re betting on you, Chester!” Andrew added.

“Go!” I shouted as loud as I can, then both twins run off.

Fall 1966

Olympics at the Plains

Part II

Twin Fight
(m+f/mm), (m+/m), (m/m)

Now, we had walked many times with our hands bound behind our backs, even while gagged—it had been by now second nature to us. But running was another matter. We simply had very few opportunities where running while bound was a good idea. And this race showed why.

Halfway to the end of the plain, Chester lost his balance and fell to the ground. They ran at top speed while tied-up—a bad idea. Jay stopped.

“Are you okay?” I heard him shout.

“Yeah. Just a little winded,” Chester said as he struggled to stand up—something very difficult with your hands bound behind you.

“Okay then, see ya, brother,” said Jay as he ran towards Angela. This time, he ran at a more measured pace, as he knew with Chester on the ground and him having difficulty standing up, he already won.

Angela said something to Jay which I could not understand as she placed the “baton” on Jay’s grasp. Later I learned that Angela asked if Chester was all right, and Jay said yes.

Jay now had the baton on his hands and he ran towards us. Towards the end, he slowed down to a walk.

Meanwhile I can hear David shouting to Chester who was still trying to get up.

“Chet! Get up! We’re gonna lose!” David shouted.

Chester finally got up but it was too late. As he approached David, Jay reached the back fence of our backyard, and he had won.

“I won! I won!” Jay shouted.

But most of our attention was at Chester. “Is Chet all right?” I asked as I untied Jay.

“Yes,” Jay replied.

Andrew himself went to where Chester was. Andrew untied him, and they, including David and Angela, went back to us.

“Congratulations for winning, bro. But you only won because I fell,” he said to his brother.

“Well, you deserve to lose for being so stupid as to let yourself fall down,” Jay replied. “Besides, even if you didn’t fall, I’d still have won. I’m faster than you.”

The twins argued about the fairness of Chet’s victory while the rest of us argued about the rules. David, Betty, Maggie, and I were of the opinion that if someone fell while running bound, one of us should help him get up. Frank, Donald, Henry and Angela opposed this idea, as they said that if one fell, they should get up on their own.

Andrew settled this argument by saying that it doesn’t matter which of the options were taken, because the one who fell, no matter how quick he would take to stand up and run, effectively lost unless the other player also slipped and fell. So he said, it wouldn’t make any difference if one helped the fallen one or not. So in this case, it’s better if we should help the one who fell to get up.

We all accepted this, but before anything can happen, the argument between Chester and Jay escalated into a fight. And to make it worse, instead of breaking it up, the rest of us except Andrew just watched around them in a circle, shouting, “Fight! Fight! Fight!”

“Oh for crying out!” Andrew shouted. “Break it up or I will have both of you tied up!”

All of us looked at my irate older brother. The twins ignored him and continued fighting.

“Oh that’s it! Grab them and tie them up!” Andrew ordered.

Immediately, all of us pounced on the twins. We soon held them as Betty and Maggie brought to us the ropes and strips of cloth that we were going to use. Frank and I held Chester, while David and Donald held Jay.

“Now, this is your last chance,” Andrew warned. “Make up or I’ll have you bound!”

“Just as long as Jay admits he didn’t win fair!” Chester shouted spitefully at his twin brother.

“Just as long as Chet admits he’s slower than me!” Jay replied.

“Just tie them up,” Frank shouted.

Andrew signalled with his hands indicating that we should proceed with the tying up.

Frank and I forced Chester to the ground and pulled his hands behind him. Angela approached with a piece of rope and tied them tight.

Suddenly, the expression in Chester’s face changed. “Okay you win. Jay I’m sorry, you won fair and square. Now don’t tie us up!”

“Yeah, we won’t fight anymore,” Jay pleaded as his hands were pulled back and rope was wound around his wrists by Andrew.

But it was too late. Andrew looked at both of them, smiled, and said, “It’s all well and good. But for you, it’s too late! And if you don’t shut, well, well, we’ll make you shut up!”

The younger kids formed a circle around us as we bound the twins. After we finished with their wrists, we sat them on the grassy ground. Frank and I let Chester go because bound as he was, he wasn’t much of a threat. I was the one who tied his ankles, while Frank did his knees. Andrew prepared a roll of duct tape as David tied Jay’s ankles and knees. Donald looked on as he talked to his sister.

Andrew tore a strip of duct tape and prepared to plaster it on Jay’s closed lips.

“Aren’t you gonna pack them?” asked Angela.

“Nah. I don’t think it’d be necessary,” he said as he smoothed the silver tape over Jay’s lips. He tossed the roll to me.

I didn’t need to be asked as I tore a strip and taped Chester’s mouth.

“Chet, Jay, I know you can easily remove the tape, but if you do, I’ll have Angela pack your mouth, and make sure you’re really gagged,” my older brother warned. “You can watch the rest of the tournament, but if you act up, not only will I gag you for real, but I’ll have you blindfolded for the rest of the game, understood?”

They both nodded.

We now resumed our tournament as all attention was diverted from the twins. Well, not all attention. Barney, and John (6), another of my younger brothers, approached the twins and began teasing them. We paid them no attention.

The next players were Frank and I. It was David who got the privilege to tie me up while Donald bound Frank’s hands.

“Hey I know! The loser should be bound like the twins for the rest of the competition!” Angela suggested.

The rest of us thought it was a great idea, and we quickly approved it. Andrew didn’t oppose it, so it was carried.

Now that gave extra impetus for us to win the race. However, my sister Betty made another suggestion.

“Why don’t we tie their feet and knees too, and we can have a hopping race?” she said.

“Now wait a minute—” I protested, but were drowned out by the roars of approval of the others.

“That’s a great idea sis,” Andrew shouted. “Tie their feet and knees!”

I gave in. What can I do? My hands were already tied behind me anyway. I put my feet together and Angela tied them together with rope. She also did my knees. David decided that he was the one who should tie Frank’s ankles and knees.

Maggie and Betty went to the end of the plain, holding the baton in their hands. Andrew and David would accompany us while we hopped so that they can catch us before we fall, and help us up if we did.

I prepared myself for the race. This time, it was Henry who shouted the preliminaries.

“Ready!” Henry, Angela’s younger brother, shouted.

“Go, Tommy!” Angela shouted.

“Frank, you can do it!” David added.

“Set!” Henry continued.

I braced myself for the start of the race.

“Go!”

I immediately hopped forward, with Andrew running besides me.

“Don’t go too fast. Be careful,” my brother warned. “And go beat Frank! For the Fords!”

Frank and I were in a neck in neck race. By the half way point, both of us were tired. I nearly fell down several times but thankfully, my brother was attentive and caught me each time. I reached Betty and she put the baton on my hands. I rested a bit before resuming my hop. Frank and I were both sweating, but we hopped as fast as we can, as I now absolutely trusted Andrew to catch me if I again fell. I soon gained a small lead.

“You better give up, Frank,” I shouted as I hopped, “because you’ll only tire yourself.”

“I’m the one who’s gonna be untied after this race, not you,” Frank shouted as he hopped harder.

“No, my lil’ brother is gonna win!” Andrew shouted as he urged me on. “You can do it Tom! Win! Hop! That’s it!”

As we neared the finish line, we were dead tired. I was covered with sweat, and my hops became slower. Frank too was exhausted. His hops became slower and the distance covered by each hop decreased with each step. The gap between him and I widened, and it emboldened me to make a final effort.

“Go Tom! Go!” I can hear Donald and my younger brothers’ cheer as I neared the finish line. I heard Frank utter a curse as I hopped across the line, and I sat down, still bound hand and foot, exhausted yet victorious. Frank sat on the grass a few feet from the finish line, defeated.

Unlike the first race, this one was exciting and not anticlimactic as the race between Chester and Jay was. I clearly won.

I was quickly as I was given a shower of congratulations from my friends and close relatives. I was quickly untied as the others helped Frank hop towards where Chester and Jay were sitting and were watching. Andrew handed the roll of duct tape to Angela. She gagged Frank like Chester and Jay—a small strip across the mouth, with a warning that his mouth would be stuffed if he tried to remove the tape.

The last race was between Donald and David. Andrew would have participated in the race, but since the only other participant who could be tied up was Angela, and a boys v. girls race was deemed unfair, he was without a partner.

You have told a good tale here and told it well. Unfortunately for me you cut across some ideas that I've been brewing for some time! But to the victor, the spoils, well done! I shall have to re-think.

But remember: youth and skill will never defeat old age and trechery!

Happy New Year
Fall 1966

Olympics at the Plains

Part III

The Hopping Competition
(m/m), (mf/m), (f/m)

David and Donald readied themselves for the race. Well, the others readied them for the race. I tied up my cousin, while Andrew tied his best friend. We tied them up the usual way—we used a precut length of white rope to bind their wrists behind them, then repeated the procedure on their ankles and knees.

In addition, I was the one who would accompany Donald and make sure that he won’t fall to the ground, or if he did fall, to quickly help him stand up again. Andrew would do the same for David. Betty would give the “baton” to Donald, while Barney would give it to David.

Henry again shouted the start of the race.

Donald hopped forward at a steady rate, while David hopped fast and large distances with each hop. Soon, David had a significant lead over my cousin.

“Go faster!” I urged. “You’re losing.”

“He’ll get tired,” said Donald as hopped. “Just see. He’ll slow down.”

David soon reached the end of the plain. Barney quickly put the “baton” on David’s hands, and with Andrew’s help, turned around and started hopping back.

Donald soon reached the end of the plain, and Betty gave him the “baton” and we turned back.

David soon slowed down, tired, his hops becoming more infrequent and the distance covered by each hop diminished. He was exhausted already. Donald was tired, but not as tired as David as he continued his steady hops. Soon, he overtook David.

“Told you so,” said Donald to me.

David tried to catch up, but he lost his balance and only Andrew prevented him from falling to the ground. Donald soon tired, but then gave another effort as he neared the finish line. He hopped as fast as he could, and I had to catch him as he hopped across the finish line to prevent him from hitting the ground.

David was covered with sweat and breathing heavily. Andrew untied his ankles and knees, but not his hands, and walked him towards the finish line.

“Told you that wouldn’t work,” I can hear Andrew say to David.

David was led to where Chester, Jay, and Frank was seated and bound. He sat down besides them, and Angela tied his ankles and knees, and taped his mouth.

I untied Donald, who was covered with sweat. But he was happy.

Andrew decided to untie Jay and make him his competitor. He reasoned that he won the first game with Chester, but it didn’t “count” because it wasn’t a hopping contest. Jay eagerly accepted the offer. Chester, since he lost the first race, would remain bound and gagged.

It was simple to prepare Jay. I just removed the tape gag and hopped him to the starting line. Angela volunteered to tie up Andrew. She tied his hands behind his back, then his ankles and knees. She also volunteered to be the one to accompany Andrew and make sure that he won’t fall, or to help him stand up.

I heard someone, but I forgot to record who, shout that Angela only wanted to hold Andrew. Angela just stuck out her tongue at that kid.

Donald was the one who will assist Jay in the race. I was the one to shout the start of the race. David’s sisters Nancy and Cathy would pass the baton to Andrew and Jay, respectively.

“Are you two ready?” I asked.

“Yes,” Andrew simply said.

Jay nodded.

“Ready!” I shouted at the top of my voice. “Set! Go!”

The two set off. Jay bounded to a big lead, but I can see he was going too fast, too soon.

“Slow down!” Donald advised his charge. “You’ll tire yourself out!”

Andrew started slow, as if he wasn’t taking the race seriously.

“C’mon, Andy! You’re going to lose!” Angela panicked.

Andrew then picked up the pace as Jay reached the end of the plain and Cathy gave him the “baton”. I could see that he stopped as he regained his breath. Only when Andrew neared did start hopping again. He tried to hop wide and fast, but he was too tired at this point, and lost his balance. Donald failed to catch him, and he tumbled to the grass. Donald helped him to his feet, but the problem was, Jay dropped the baton. And since it was only a brown stick that was from a dried tree branch, and there were scattered sticks all over the plain, they didn’t find it immediately. They must have spent a minute trying to look for it, and trying to differentiate it from the other branches scattered around, because by the time they did, Andrew had already reached the end of the plain, got his “baton” from Nancy, and overtook Jay.

Donald soon spotted the missing baton, but it was too late. Andrew now had a wide lead. Jay tried to catch up, but all he got for his troubles was that he nearly fell down. Andrew then accelerated the last few feet, and hopped triumphantly across the finish line. He lost his balance as he did so, but he was caught by Angela who held him in a tight hug, and put him on his feet again.

She untied Andrew while I went and untied Jay’s ankles and knees. I led him to where Frank and David was. I tied his ankles and knees, and went off.

Now we have three winners—Donald, Andrew, and I, and it was quickly decided that the three of us would compete in a race simultaneously—with the two losers being bound and gagged.

Now who would assist us in case we fall? David, Chester, Jay, and Frank were out. So Angela agreed to again help Andrew, my sister Betty would assist me while Maggie would assist her brother Donald. Nancy, Cathy, and Barney would give the “batons” to Andrew, Donald and I, respectively.

Henry shouted the start of the race. “Ready! Set! Go!”

Fall 1966 - Olympics at the Plains - Part IV- Conclusion

Postby Tom Ford » Sun Jan 02, 2011 6:20 am

Fall 1966

Olympics at the Plains

Part IV

Conclusion
(mf/m+)

We started the hopping race. The competition was intense. Donald at first gained a slight lead, and my brother trailed both of us. All of us tried to hop in a measured pace to avoid tiring too quickly. Donald reached the end quickly and Nancy gave him the wooden baton. Seconds later, I too reached the end and was given the baton by Barney. Soon, Andrew too reached that point and Cathy gave him the baton and he tried to catch up with us.

I was soon exhausted hopping all around, and to compound the problem, I lost my balance during one hop and fell to the grassy ground. Although Betty quickly helped me to my feet, I was overtaken by Andrew. It became a race between my cousin Donald and my brother Andrew with me lagging in third place. My brother caught up with Donald as they neared the finish line. With one final jump, Andrew’s feet landed just beyond the finish line a few seconds before Donald crossed the line. Andrew had won. Just like he always does.

Betty looked at me as I sat on the grass in the field, too tired to hop towards the others at the finish line. “Well, it looks like you’d spend the rest of the afternoon tied up,” she said as she untied my ankles and knees and helped me to stand up. “If you didn’t fall, you could’ve won.”

I nodded as I walked towards where Frank, David and the others who were tied up were. I was soon seated besides them. Maggie also escorted her brother, Donald to where we were.

Betty and Maggie called on Angela, who had just untied Andrew, to help them tie our feet.

“No, at least not yet,” Andrew shouted. “Untie the others’ feet! Let’s bring them inside the house!”

Then, I heard an argument from Angela or rather, a complaint. I was close enough to hear the entire conversation. “That’s not fair! I want to race hop too!” she complained. “It’s not my fault there aren’t any girls for me to compete with.”

“Well, what do you want? You want me to tie you up so you could hop by yourself?” asked Andrew.

Angela pouted. “No, but next time, I’ll find someone to compete against! Maybe Louise? She’s nine.”

“Louise? The new girl?” Andrew asked.

Louise was a neighbour who just moved to our neighbourhood a few weeks ago, just in time for the start of the September classes. She was my classmate, in fact, my seatmate, and was my close friend. She also became close friends with Angela, Maggie, Nancy, and Cathy. But she had not seen our games.

“Yes. I’ll ask her to come over then maybe we could tie her up,” Angela thought aloud.

“Angela wants a new girl playmate,” Betty said.

“Yeah. She’s lonely that she’s the only girl among us that can be tied up!” Maggie added.

“Well, we’ll think about that later,” Andrew said. “Right now, I want them brought inside the house!”

Betty and Maggie untied David’s, Jay’s, Chester’s, and Frank’s feet and ankles, and helped us to our feet. We were marched to the living room. While passing through the kitchen, Mom noticed our dirty clothes—we have been rolling around in the grass—and our dirty bodies. She briefly scolded us for getting dirty, and told us that we should change and take a shower as soon as we were untied. The ones who were not tied up, and who were also dirty—mainly Andrew, should immediately shower.

Angela and Andrew then marched us to the living room. We were accompanied by Betty, Maggie, Nancy and Cathy, while Barney and Henry went upstairs to play other games. I began to feel that we boys had been captured by the girls, and indeed, with the exception of Andrew, it looked like it.

I was seated on the couch. I was at the left extremity of the couch. On my immediate right was David, then to his right, Frank, and to Frank’s right, Donald. The twins were seated on the two separate one seat sofas. We weren’t bound in any way to the couches that we sat on.

Andrew and Angela then tied our feet and knees with rope. Betty helped by putting a strip of duct tape on my mouth, and did the same to Donald’s mouth.

After we were gagged, Andrew announced his satisfaction of our condition. He then indicated that he would take his shower and that Angela and the girls should watch over us.

“And Angela, no tickling,” he said.

“Oh you’re no fun,” Angela pouted as she folded her arms in front of her and looked at Andrew.

Andrew just laughed as he ran up to his room.

As I mentioned, we were not bound to where we were sitting. However, that soon was going to change.

“Get some rope,” Angela instructed to my sister. “We’ll make them a little more secure.”

Now with my older brother gone, it seemed as if we boys were captured by girls, and only girls. I tried to position myself so I can untie David’s wrists, but I was caught by Nancy.

“Tom is trying to reach my brother’s ropes!” Nancy shouted as he caught me.

“Don’t even try,” Angela warned, looking at me with an icy stare. “And that goes for the rest of you as well!”

We could only groan as some of us laughed at her threat. Betty returned with the additional ropes and Angela went to work.

“Watch them, not me,” she told the four other girls. “Make sure they don’t try anything funny.”

Betty, Maggie, Nancy and Cathy seemed to prefer to talk among themselves and giggle than to guard us. However, even if they seemed to be ignoring us, when one of us would try something to escape, they’d immediately notice and warn us to knock it off.

Angela went to the twins first. She simply tied the already bound ankles of Chester to the left front leg of the couch he was sitting on, and did the same to Jay, the only difference that his feet were tied to the right front leg of the couch.

She then turned her attention to us. She first went to me, and tied my ankles to the right front leg of the couch. She did the same to Donald, who was on the left extremity of the long couch we were sitting on—she tied his ankles to the left front leg of the sofa.

“But how about Frank and David? Their feet can’t reach any of the legs,” Cathy pointed out.

“I know,” the oldest of the girls, Angela, said. “But we’ll just have to improvise, won’t we?”

She pulled David out of the couch, and Betty, sensing what Angela wanted done, did the same to Frank.

“Sit down on the floor,” the red headed Angela ordered the two of them as she pushed David down, and Betty did the same to Frank. They were positioned back to back sitting on the carpeted floor. She took a long piece of rope, positioned their already bound wrists so it was together, and tied the rope over both their wrists. Now it was impossible for them to untie each other’s wrists. She took another long piece of rope and tied it around their waists.

“There! They’re a nice little package, all wrapped up!” Angela declared as she looked at us, satisfied.

“Well, what do we do with them?” Nancy asked.

Unfortunately for them, and fortunately for us, she took her sweet time to do all of this, and by the time she had finished, Andrew had finished his shower and appeared, his hair wet but he was already dressed for the day.

“Ha! That’s a good job you’ve done with them,” my brother complemented when he appeared and looked at us. “However I think you should untie them right now.”

“Right now?” Angela replied, a bit disappointed. “But we’re just getting started.”

“Started? It started a long time ago during the race,” he replied. “Besides, Mom said Tom and the others should take a shower and change clothes.”

“Well, could at least make them promise that they’re still my prisoners and that I would tie them up when they’re done?” Angela asked. She seemed desperate to want to keep us her prisoners.

“Well, ask them. If they still want to play, then you can make them promise, otherwise, the game’s over, well, at least for now,” my brother suggested.

Angela then asked us if we still wanted to play a tie-up game after we showered. Well, as it pretty much meant that we would continue to be Angela’s prisoners, we all shook our heads. Don’t get us wrong, I like being tied up, but no one, well at least during that time, would openly admit to it.

“Looks like we’ll have to play another game,” Cathy observed.

“There’s always next time,” Andrew laughed as he went over and started untying us. “Girls, could you help me untie them?”

They obliged and soon, all of us were free. We all admitted that the race was fun, and we agreed it to do it again some time in the future, and all of us boasted that next time, we they would win.

That was the end of the tie-up games for that day. I immediately went and took a bath, while the others went to their respective homes to get cleaned up. Except Henry and Angela—who didn’t actively participate in the race and was clean—who stayed at our house and had dinner with us and only went home when it was very late; so late that my father had to accompany them while walking to their house.

That was an enjoyable day—one where tie-up games were not expected but came anyway. The next tie-up game also came up unexpectedly. What happened? Well, read the next part and find out.
