Anti-Homosexuality bill in Uganda

Postby SephySJ » Mon Nov 12, 2012 4:57 pm

Seems like the 'Kill the gays' bill has been passed in Uganda; it is now illegal, under punishment of death, to commit 'aggravated homosexuality' (i.e gay sex whilst HIV positive, gay sex whilst in a same sex marriage etc..) and illegal under punishment of life imprisonment to engage in homosexual behaviour of any other kind. Also, Ugandans engaging in homosexual behaviour in OTHER COUNTRIES may be extradited back for punishment.

This is horrific news, and Uganda has received worldwide condemnation for the bill. Also, apparently, the bill was perhaps nudged on by American Evangelical Christians, who state homosexuality is bad for the African family. So will this stick? Or will the world see sense and stop this insanity? I admit I don't know much about the bill, or politics, but I do know that I am sick of Christianity and everyone who insists homosexual people are evil because of what an ancient, non-sensical text decrees.

Sorry if I offend anyone religious, but I honestly think religion is the cause of most of this worlds problems.

So is this post on here so you can voice your opposition to the terrible law or for you to get your shots in at Christians? Because it changed focus rather quickly.

A little bit from column A and a little bit from Column B. To be honest, the Christian thing was a side note, and only my own personal view. Still the thing's disgusting.

But don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with Christians in general (just the bad eggs), but I do have a problem with religion.

Same here; at least when it forced on other people.
Otherwise, a person is entitled to believe whatever they want; irregardless of how illogical anyone else thinks said belief is.
As for the Uganda bill; that country doesn't have a a very good track record of human rights - remember Idi Amin?
The religion issue is a whole separate thing though, and perhaps should've had a separate post to receive proper attention.

I don't really want to discuss religion, it was just my two cents. And I agree that anyone has the right to beleive in what they want, so long as tgeir beleifs don't harm the lives of others (which is the case here).

And despite Ugandas track record, I genuinely thought we as humans had moved on from such things. Misplaced hope for a civilised world?

In short, yes. It's known as naivete, and is a common affliction especially among the young. You'll probably eventually get over it... unfortunately it's often replaced by cynicism. That has been the case with ME, anyway. If you aspire to be a journalist as your brief bio suggests (and which I was myself for a while), hopefully you'll find a good balance there somewhere.
