Part 1 - Helena's POV
Helena sighed.
She was going through the drills with her cheer team.
There were two boys in the audience. Usually, there were more. After all, what teenage boy would pass up the chance to see four beautiful, agile girls flip and twist in skimpy cheerleader outfits?
But today was the Football tryouts day. So most boys were trying out for the team.
The two boys that were watching Helena and her friends were not at the meet.
She didn't mind having Jake watching. Jake was sweet, and she liked him. From what she could tell, her friend Sarah more than liked him. It was a good match. The sweet, shy boy and the beautiful, confident cheerleader. Sure, maybe not a traditional match, but he'd be a great boyfriend to her. Helena knew that for sure.
The other boy, however, was starting to annoy Helena. For weeks, every single meet had been attended by George. And at every single one he booed, jeered and insulted Helena and her cheerleaders.
It was really starting to get on her nerves.
"Ok ladies," she said, trying to take her mind off the obnoxious boy in the audience. "Let's do the finale. One last time!"
The girls sighed. Helena looked at them all in turn.
Beautiful Sarah tossed her long, luscious brown hair from one shoulder to the other. Helena smiled: she noticed a slight shudder from Jake in the audience. He clearly liked Sarah as much as she liked him, though neither of them knew that the feeling was mutual.
Ellie, the girl with the tactics, sighed and rolled her eyes. But she didn't argue. She knew better than that. In fact, it had been her idea for Helena to be harsher in the meets. But she didn't want to show enthusiasm while the mood was so low.
Finally, little Ashlyn, the star of the team, hopped from one foot to the other impatiently. Always hyper, she was. Helena smiled to herself. She enjoyed the small, quirky girl's company, and if there was one thing that lightened the mood, it was her sarcastic digs.
Although not eager, the girls launched into their routine once again.
A few minutes later they stopped.
There was a brief round of applause - after all, applause is brief if only one person is clapping. Helena smiled gratefully at Jake. She was glad he was here, even if he had a lousy choice of friends.
Then the jeers and taunts began.
