Speaking of fetishes?

Postby myself1931 » Sun Apr 29, 2012 3:59 pm

Does anyone else on here have a fetish for proper grammar and spelling? I know this isnt really a true fetish, but it is really annoying. I mean, I can understand the people that have to write on something like and Ipod touch. But really, for those people with computers, is it really that hard to run a story through Word or something similar before they post it? It makes things so much easier to read, especially if the story is longer.

So, am I alone here?
Finally got out of that small town, I now live in Toronto. Anyone nearby feel free to hit me up.

I close my eyes, Inis Mona
And reminisce of those palmy days
I moon o'er you, Inis Mona
As long as I breathe
I'll call you my home

Some people's posts could be helped by this, but spell checkers to some extent, and especially grammar checkers, won't pick up everything. You really need to have some basic grammar skills to start.

I don't expect people to have perfect grammar, but it would be nice if people tried to write in complete sentences and spell at least the majority of words correctly. But honestly, while I try to use good grammar and spell things right myself, I'm not that upset if people don't as long as I don't have to spend time just trying to figure out what in the world they're saying.

One other thing to keep in mind though: not everyone here speaks English as a first language. And I sure hope people aren't trying to type out entire stories on a smartphone or something like that.

Oooh, the pedant in me loves this! "Right", in that context is an adjective, not an adverb, which is what is required! Bloody difficult when, in different situations, it could be an adverb or even a noun or a verb.

Maybe you have an embarrassment fetish. That would explain it.

There is no need for a comma after "Right." Alternatively, there should be a comma after "context."

Here's a nitpick: iPad. I don't know what the great holy book of grammar says about stylized capitalization but yeah :3

I don't always point out every error, but if there are a lot, I get really frustrated.

Imo it depends on the error. Forget to capitalize "I" once? Typo, happens. Shift doesn't always register when you type fast. 5 paragraphs with no capital letters? Yep. annoying. 80 lines, 1 paragraph? You'll hear me complaining about it :3

Cuz dear friggin god, people. Spacebar isn't the only non-letter key usable in writing >_<
Having said that, I am terrified of a day when we'd have to tell people to use spaces. English isn't Japanese, that just won't fly x_x

I'll let that pass because the correct "is" sounds odd these days.

I for one sometimes get bothered by improper grammar and spelling, but usually only when they are products of poor writing skills and not so much when they are products of typos caused by a glitchy keyboard (which will sometimes tranfer entire blocks of text randomly to elsewhere in the text and frequently skip letters). I used to be an editor though, and it was my job to notice such things. But this is an informal forum and not a scientific publication, I don't get paid to give unsolicited advice here, and I prefer to just relax and enjoy stories where possible. When a writer lacks the skills to make a story enjoyable, I simply learn not to look at story posts made by that writer and that's the end of it.

I only did the first post to be an ass, I don't normally point out others flaws because my grammar sucks.
