Bondage on the Stage

I was in a production of the musical Urinetown last year. (It's a really good musical, by the way, I highly recommend it.) Anyways, at the end of the first act, the "stunningly beautiful" (as the script describes her) female love interest is kidnapped by a band of rebels (ironically led by her lover), who are holding her ransom in order to gain leverage against her rich, powerful, and evilly corrupt father. For the overwhelming majority of the entirety of the second act, she is tied to a chair and gagged. Normally, the director of the show just goes with the shoddy hands tied together in front and cleave gag look. However, I have seen some good ties before with this show. If you want to see any of it, look up the numbers "Snuff that Girl," "Run Freedom Run," and "Tell her I Love her" on YouTube. You'll see tons of results.

Am I the only one here that sees the title?
I don't care.

Yeah, I know. Urinetown. It's about a dystopian future where water is so scarce that people have to pay for the privilege to pee. It's actually pretty hilarious.

I've heard about (saw one) some miscues involving bondage on stage. If someone's hands are tied behind their back and their back is never shown to the audience it is ok just to put the ends of the rope under the actor's thumbs and the rope can be shaken off in a few seconds at the end of the scene. (Aside: poorly tied hands are part of the plot in Carmen, Don Jose lets her escape at the end of the first act.) If someone is tied to something (chair, tree, or cross {church production around Easter}), it's best to do it for real. If you are tied to a (prop) tree while the guys who will take you to justice are at the other end of the stage, it would be awkward if the only thing preventing your freedom is some rope loosly laying on your feet.
