Case #103485 KCPD Archives

Evidence Item #1 and #2: Journals kept by Detective Sergeant Michael Devon and Detective Constable Amy Voss.

February 22, 2017, 6:45am Devon.
Well, seems I've officially landed the craziest goddamn case in recent memory, now I been a detective for nearly ten years ok? So there ain't much I haven't seen or heard. Murder? Yeah what else is new, lot of people hate each other that much. Robbery? Daily occurrence. Drug Trafficking? Probably more drugs out there than potato chips if ya ask me. Kidnapping? Lots of that too...

But the thing is with kidnappings is, the kidnapper usually wants something, but this case... I don't know what the hell the guy's got going through his head. The victims get picked up, no sign of them for two or three days, and then he just..... lets them go! No demands, no sexual assault, no valuables missing, no ransom, he just kidnaps them, keeps them bound and gagged for a couple days, then lets them go.

So clearly the guy just gets a kick out of the act of kidnapping these girls, but why? Is it just the thrill of possibly getting caught? Does he enjoy the control over another person? I don't know, the questions I have just give me more freakin' questions. He might be easier to track down if he had a preference for his victims, but even there the guy's unusual. He's kidnapped blondes, brunettes, redheads, one girl even had her hair coloured blue. He seems to prefer either the slim or slender ones but even then he goes for a nice big curvy girl every now and then, he doesn't even seem to have much of an age preference, we've put the average age of the victims to about twenty-eight, but the youngest victim was a few days away from her eighteenth birthday, the oldest was a fifty-five year old soon-to-be-grandma.

He ties them up different ways every time, many instances are similar, five victims report being tied to chairs the whole time, but no two ties were exactly the same. Four victims report being tied to posts, two were kept standing, two sitting down. There's too many of these to go through them all, but fact is, this guy's kidnapped forty-nine women so far, so he probably wants to do something special for his lucky number fifty girl...

Oh yeah, not to self, new partner arriving today, some broad by the name of Voss.

My first day as a detective! I can't believe today's actually come! I mean, my new partner isn't the most welcoming, DS Devon took one look at me and rolled his eyes when I met him, I offered to shake his hand and he told me to get him a cappucino, fair enough, it was a good excuse to grab myself a soy latte as well. He's about as tall as I'd imagined, easily six feet tall, he couldn't be any older than thirty but he acts like an older man, he's probably seen some serious stuff so I don't blame him. He's got a serious brooding expression that never seems to leave his face, half the time you can't even see his brown eyes because he frowns so hard, the lines in his short forehead seem to be permanently etched in, despite his moody demeanor he is clearly very social around the station since almost everyone addresses him by his first name, even the Chief! Also, his erm, physique, tells me that he spends a lot of time exercising if nothing else.

Now, I'm under no illusions that Devon's not exactly known as a squeaky clean cop, but he's a damn good one I can tell and that's what matters, I'm really eager to show him my potential, and I think I'm already making progress with that! We've been assigned to handle a massive number of kidnappings which seem to all be linked to a single kidnapper, pretty big for my first case as a detective! Devon had told me to just be quiet and let him work, but clearly he doesn't know me very well yet, I was top of my class out of the academy for a reason. He was reviewing the sites of each abduction and had all the locations marked with pins, according to him and the other cops present, the locations seemed to be random. But looking at them nice and hard, I interjected and pointed out that if the dots were connected, they formed a shape very similar to an ancient African symbol for humility.

Devon probably wouldn't ever admit it, but I think he was impressed.

Humility, what's the kidnapper trying to say? Is he trying to make these girls more humble by abducting them? Is he trying to humble himself? Is he saying that us, the police, need to be more humble? Like Devon said, the questions only lead to more questions...

Audio Interview conducted on January 31, 2017. 9:00pm-9:10pm

Interviewee: Sarah McKinnon, victim of kidnapping, age 29, real estate agent.
Interviewer: Det. Sgt. Michael Devon.

Devon: Miss McKinnon... is it alright if I call you Sarah?
McKinnon: Y-yes, that'd be fine.
D: Ok, Sarah I'm gonna need to ask you a few questions, I understand you're still frightened but just try to answer as well as you can ok?

D: Please make a verbal reply for the record
M: Yes, I understand
D: Thank you, now Sarah, can you remember exactly what happened when the man first grabbed you? Try not to leave anything out, anything you can remember will help.
M: W-well, I was on my way to pick up my daughter from kindergarten, it's not really far from there to my house so I like to walk and Kimmy likes it... um anyway I was walking along Smith street, maybe five minutes from the kindergarten and that's when uhh....

*audible sniffing*

D: It's ok Sarah, take your time.
M: ... well... that's when I felt this big, gloved hand clamp down over my mouth. Um, the gloves were leather, black, I don't know if that helps...
D: Yes that's great Sarah, you're doing well.
M: I could feel something sharp against my neck, it was this big knife, like an army knife or something. I wanted to scream but I was too scared. If I remember right there wasn't even anybody else around on the street so it wouldn't have made a difference. He didn't say anything he just hauled me over towards this big brown van and sort of motioned towards the door like he wanted me to open it, so I did.

*more crying*

D: It' ok Sarah keep going when you're ready.
M: A-and... I got inside, he shut the door behind me, t-there wasn't really anything in the van except all this white rope and silver duct tape and....

D: And it was at this point he tied you up?
M: Yes
D: So if I can confirm, he used the rope to tie you so that your wrists and ankles were bound together?
M: Yeah that's right, and there was another bit of rope that made it so they were connected, so I was on my stomach and I couldn't bring my hands forward at all because they were tied to my ankles.
D: I see... and at the time you were wearing the same clothes you're in now?
M: Yeah

D: For the record, interviewee is currently dressed in a pink lycra t-shirt, black tight pants, and... white and pink running shoes. Sorry Sarah please continue whenever you're ready.
M: Well once I was tied up he took a roll of tape and sort of taunted me with it, he was waving it in my face and I was so scared I thought he might wanna suffocate me with it or something. But next, I was kinda surprised because he took my shoes and socks off.
D: Ok...
M: Yeah I was really confused, but then he took my socks and sort of rolled them up together in a ball and without saying anything he grabbed me by the jaw, I was crying a lot at this point and I didn't know what he wanted, but then I realised he was trying to open my mouth, so I just did it.
D: Right. And then he...
M: Yes he.. stuffed them in my mouth. And then he like, held them in place while he wrapped the tape around my mouth and the back of my neck, he must have done that, I don't know six or seven times? Maybe more?

D: Ok, so at this point he has you bound and gagged, and you said he drove with you in the van for how long?
M: I honestly don't know, I mean it felt like hours but really it was probably.... twenty, thirty minutes?
D: Alright then, thanks Sarah that's very helpful.
M: The van stopped, and I don't know where we were because he blindfolded me with this big thick piece of cloth before we got out of the van. And for the next two days nothing much really happened, he kept me blindfolded, he changed my gag every time after I ate or drank, he spoonfed me three meals a day, he kept me tied in that same position the whole time so when he did finally let me go I couldn't even move I was so sore. He never said a word or made a sound even.

D: Ok then, Sarah I want to thank you for telling me this, you're incredibly brave, we're going to catch this guy soon, I'll make sure of it.
M: Thank you detective, can I please go? I still haven't seen my Kimmy yet.
D: Of course.... Interview terminated, 9:10pm.

It's finally lunchtime, probably not relevant but Sergeant Devon and I stopped at Joe's, if any other cops read this I'd really recommend this place, best burgers in North Karwood. Devon's not being very talkative around me (I think I'm gonna have to get used to that), so I figured I should make a new journal entry on our progress so far...

Devon showed me several interviews he conducted with victims of these kidnappings:

Jane Slater, a redhead, green-eyed, 17-year-old schoolgirl who approached the van thinking she could score some cheap pot. Was kept taped up in a ball-tie on the floor of a house under renovation overnight before being set free.

Deborah Reilly-Kane, a brown-haired, brown-eyed, 40-year-old social worker ambushed while leaving work. Remained inside the brown van for the duration of her captivity with her hands bound above her head whilst cleave gagged. She was set free on a quiet road after two days.

Alison Cho, Korean background, a hazel-eyed, 23-year-old personal trainer chloroformed in her own bed while she slept. Taken to a small camping site in the woods where she was bound to a tree with large quantities of rope and gagged with white tape. Released after three days.

Anika Patel, Indian background, black hair, brown eyes, 32-year-old waitress ambushed by kidnapper hiding in the back seat of her car. Kept handcuffed to her steering wheel and ball gagged overnight then released the next morning.

Madeleine Quinn, born in England, golden-brown hair, green eyes, a 21-year-old university student abducted on her way to class. Kept heavily taped to a chair in a rundown office building, released after two days.

Sarah McKinnon, a blonde, blue-eyed, 29-year-old single mother who was grabbed on her way to pick up her daughter from day care. Abducted in the van and taken to an undisclosed location, kept hogtied with multiple kinds of gags before being released after two days.

So.... you see any connection with any of those cases?

No, me neither. The only things that stayed the same each time were that each victim was very attractive, they were all kept blindfolded the entire time, but each recalls the kidnapper wearing all black, driving a brown van.

One thing Devon and I agree on is that this perp is extremely well organised whenever he orchestrates these kidnappings, always attacking when his victims are either distracted, tired, or vulnerable. Sick bastard, I'm gonna enjoy making him my first arrest as a detective...Anyway, Devon and I knew we couldn't get much more done if we just sat at the station all day, next thing I know we're headed to North Karwood, specifically the back alleys and train stations around Main Street. Devon did most of the actual police work, he spoke with one guy, who led him to another guy that he beat u- sorry, "interrogated", who led him to another guy who told him he'd seen a girl getting kidnapped one night but didn't go to the police. The fact that he hadn't told us earlier earned him an... "interrogation" from Devon like the last guy, after plenty of persuading, as Devon called it, the homeless guy admitted that yes, he did actually get a look at the kidnapper's face.

Approximately late twenties-early thirties, caucasian, clean-shaven. So basically our description matches half the men in Karwood...

Except for one little defining feature: the kidnapper was described as having a large scar across his right cheek.

Finally we're getting somewhere!

It's like my old Sergeant used to say back in Greyburn, sometimes a cop's gotta use more than his voice to get the job done. I guess if that Voss chick learned nothing else today, she'll have learned that occasionally, using your fists does gets results. We figured a guy with a scar on his cheek ain't exactly gonna blend in unnoticed everywhere he goes, so we went back to combing the neighbourhoods around North Karwood, I asked around some more, didn't have to dole out any more beatings which was a welcome break, my knuckles don't quite hold up like they used to.

So anyway, Voss and I got some useful stuff out of a couple prostitutes who work Princess Street, not two nights ago they saw a guy hanging around, they didn't get a look at his face but his clothing sounds exactly like each description we got from our victims. The girls told us he seemed to be directing his attention towards one of the workers in particular, so we decided to visit said girl at her home.

Paige O'Hara, part-time prostitute and part-time stripper, 21 years old, dark brown hair, blue eyes, performs under the name "Pixie", girl sells her body to help her hooker mother pay the bills. It's a story I'm afraid I'm all too familiar with...

Currently en route to her residence, will update.

Well.... I guess I better fill in this journal entry, Devon's not exactly taking this well. Seems we've got another victim to add to our ever-growing list: Paige O'Hara.

We arrived at her house not 10 minutes from the time of this entry, I went to knock on the front door, but it'd been broken open already. I admit my heart leaped into my damn throat when I realised, so I looked at Devon, we knew what might have happened, we both drew our weapons, and with caution, we entered the home, Devon took point while I covered his back. The front hallway, living room, and kitchen were all clear, so we proceeded to the back hallway where the bathroom and bedrooms were located. It was about at this point Devon stopped all of a sudden in front of me.

"What boss?" I whispered

He put his finger against his lips telling me to be quiet, then pointed to his ear... he could hear something, concentrating as well as I could with my blood pumping a million miles a minute, I listened carefully. Sure enough there was a noise, it sounded like a female voice, no decipherable words that I could tell, she was probably gagged...

The voice was coming from the bedroom at the very end of the hall, so we moved quietly to the door, keeping our backs to the walls and checking each room as we moved up, I swear I've never seen someone as calm under pressure as Devon, he was amazing. He and I stopped when we were on either side of the doorway, the female voice was a lot more clear now, whoever it was she was definitely gagged. Raising his hand, Devon held up three fingers, I took a deep breath.

3...

I double-checked my weapon, making sure the safety was off.

2...

Devon's eyes told me, good luck kid.

1...

We burst through the door! "Police, don't move!" "Police, don't move!"

I have to admit, I breathed a pretty heavy sigh of relief when we entered the bedroom and all we saw was Paige's mother Cathy tied to the bed and gagged. It really wasn't the sort of sight I expected to see when I joined the force, there she was, a 42-year-old woman, who was rocking an amazingly fit and shapely body, her brown curly hair draped all over the pillows, her arms and legs completely outstretched as she lay handcuffed to each leg of the wooden bed frame. Her thick, botox-heavy lips were protruding as best they could through the silver duct tape that had been wrapped multiple times around her mouth and neck, her incredible 34DD breasts (which I'd just like to state, I doubt were real) were barely contained by her skimpy red bra. I think it must've taken Devon and I a second to actually register what we were seeing before we finally remembered to let the poor lady go.

She gave us a lot of muffled screams as we untied her, it was clear she'd been crying. Our worst fears were realised when we ungagged her.

"Mmmph! Please! Please he took my daughter! He took my baby girl you've got to find her!"

That was a few minutes ago, Devon and I will set up a crime scene once he stops punching holes in the wall, backup's on the way.

This is going to be a long night.

Interesting format. I've seen (and even written) stories in the first person, but one where there are two narrators, is unusual. It does break the monotony of stories told in the third person.

From a technical standpoint, it is well written; there are no glaring misspellings, and paragraphs are line spaced. Very good.

Crime Scene Report #769274
Officer in Charge: Detective Sergeant Michael Devon
Accompanying Officer: Detective Constable Amy Voss
CS Site: 54 Brookes Road, North Karwood
Report submitted Feb 22, 2017 at 11:20pm

7:00pm Approached residence, door broken indicating forced entry by unknown party. House searched by myself, female victim Catherine Vivian O'Hara discovered bound and gagged in easternmost bedroom.

7:10pm Info received of missing witness Paige Judith O'Hara, abducted by same party who forced entry onto premises. (Minor damage inflicted on wall, will compensate)

7:30pm Crime Scene cordoned off, examination of door shows it was kicked in, abductor did not wait to knock. Destroyed flowerpot and dropped keys in hallway indicate a struggle in the front hallway.

7:40pm Laptop found in living room, Facebook messages show it was being used when the struggle broke out, subject Paige O'Hara identified as using laptop.

7:42pm Bullet casing found under couch in living room with bullet entry point discovered in ceiling, clearly a warning shot, no reports made from neighbors about gunshots, suspect may have used a suppressor.

7:50pm UV light shows three sets of footprints leading into main bedroom, rope strands discovered next to wooden chair in bedroom, subject Paige O'Hara was bound to this chair. Nail polish residue found on chair, identified as belonging to Catherine O'Hara.

8:09pm One pair of panties and one pair of silk stockings missing from Catherine O'Hara's clothing, these items were most likely used on Paige as a gag.

8:40pm UV lights indicate a second struggle in front hallway, shoe marks against walls, , large impact point found on wall closer to the door, saliva and blood residues discovered, will turn into crime lab for analysis and identification.

9:03pm Tire streaks on road indicate a vehicle, identified as Mercedes model Van, fled CS at high speed, proceeding in easterly direction.

Summary of events: The suspect entered the premises by kicking in the door, Catherine was leaving premises for work but was immediately seized and subdued after a brief struggle, Paige was on Facebook in the living room and attempted to aid her mother, however both victims were subdued by warning gunshot fired into the ceiling.

Suspect ordered both victims into the main bedroom, Catherine was forced at gunpoint to tie up Paige and gag her with her own panties and stockings. Paige was kept subdued whilst suspect quickly handcuffed Catherine to her own bed, using duct tape to gag her, no such items belong to the O'Haras therefore suspect brought these items himself.

With Catherine subdued, suspect stripped her down to her underwear, no signs of other sexual assault. Suspect untied Paige from the chair and carried her out to the hall, Paige put up a clear struggle, even pushing the suspect into the wall, the impact striking the back of his head leaving DNA for identification. He proceeded to load Paige into his vehicle and fled to the east, will advise patrols to focus searches in that direction.

Awaiting DNA sample results, will pursue leads as necessary.

Signed, DS Michael Devon, KCPD

I'm currently writing this from home, I've called Devon and he's due to meet me in a few minutes, 'cause I've got great news... I think we may finally have cracked this case, if not, then we're pretty damn close! Funnily enough, our big break came from the crime scene of where Paige O'Hara was abducted, and one by one the pieces started to fit together.

I was amazed Devon had missed it, but on my second walkthrough of the crime scene last night, I noticed that on the headboard of the bed where Cathy was tied up, there was a symbol carved into the woodwork, anyone might think at first glance it was just part of the design, but I knew better than that, this guy had already left us one clue in the form of a symbol, on closer inspection though I could see it was actually a kind of asian character, Chinese or Japanese something of that sort. So I was quick to let Devon know.

"Do I look Chinese to you?" Was all he really had to say before he shouted at the beat cops to get someone who could identify the character. Ah that Devon, he's almost so grumpy that it's cute. Granted he did tell me I did a great job spotting that symbol, hearing that from him almost knocked me off my feet though, I didn't think he knew what compliments were!

We got a Chinese man who lived a few doors down to come in and translate... unfortunately he said he'd never seen it before and it wasn't Chinese. So one of the beat cops said he had a Japanese friend who could help, a few minutes later he arrives and sure enough, it was a Japanese symbol. A Kanji symbol for beauty.

Obviously this just raised more questions than answers once again. We knew the guy had a thing for beauty, every girl he kidnapped was drop-dead gorgeous, but it had to be something more than that...

Anyway, while I later did a search of Paige's bedroom, I discovered amongst her belongings a big photo album, it wasn't a very big one, but when I took a look inside I was astonished, they were incredibly high quality, Paige looked beautiful beyond belief, her clothes were all high-end fashion labels, so good that, I could've sworn they were professional...

It was about 10:50 while Ms. O'Hara was giving her witness statement, that I entered with the photo album I'd found. Poor woman cried when she saw her daughter's face, I felt so sorry for her, but I reassured her she'd be safe since the guy had abducted countless women and never harmed any of them. When I was sure she was thinking more clearly I asked her when and where the pictures were taken, it turns out Paige used to be a part-time model, but the company who gave her most of her contracts went out of business, unfortunately she couldn't remember the name of the company.

Devon and the chief didn't think my new findings were relevant however, and after a few hours of overseeing the search across North Karwood for Paige, I was sent home.

"I'll call you the second I hear something Amy..." Devon had said to me, it was strange hearing him say my first name, I guess he really is starting to warm up to me.

I couldn't sleep, something was ticking over in my head but for the life of me I couldn't work it out I was so tired.

Then about an hour ago, it came to me. I accessed the file database from my computer and looked through the victims' personal files, still no apparent connection... but then I decided to do a google search for some kind of model database. It was hear I finally found a connection, every single woman that had been kidnapped was a model at some point in their lives, and one company in particular kept showing up again and again...

BHM....Beauty and Humility Magazine.

I remembered reading a few issues back in high school, it was a pretty typical beauty magazine, the girls in the pictures were always stunningly beautiful. But despite running successfully for many decades, it hit hard financial trouble and was taken over by a larger company.

I can't wait to show Devon what I
