I’m not sure I will be adding any more instalments. :(
Due to the nature of the story, each episode gets more difficult and more exhausting to write.
However, in the words of the great philosopher – I will do what I can.

I'm really impressed... actually astonished is a better word, that a story with this kind of depth and artistic flair can be found on a tugs forum! Way to go Sarobah! I detected a hint of feminist subtext in a some of your other stories on this board, (at least the ones I've read thus far) though this one takes it to a whole new level. Which I'm sure was your intention. Anyway, its a certainly a work of art you've made here. I certainly hope you can find the time and the patience to come up with more!
There's a permanent tension in music isn't there? On one hand you have three chords, you know, four four and three chords. Then there's the people like me, who say "Well, why don't we add a fourth chord and put it in five four?" - Bill Bruford

Thank you.
Yes, I’m a radical feminist who loves being tied up by guys. When God was handing out stereotypes, she forgot mine.
The instalments get harder because I have to stick to the theme of repetition while keeping the story fresh. I will do my best.

I love how you refer to God as "She", that's awesome. Though if you don't mind me asking:

“Our sex is the most fundamental element of our being. That doesn’t change from one lifetime to the next.”

That's a really interesting statement, especially from a radical feminist. (Or at least its counter-intuitive to feminism in the Western sense of the term) Many would consider it debatable how much the difference between genders is defined by chemical or biological processes. And just so you know I'm viewing the soul or essence of someone's being if you like, from the Christian viewpoint. That being said, care to elaborate?

Interesting point.
Let’s just say that not everything a character says in a story reflects the opinions of the author.
Without getting too much into my (sometimes bizarre) psychology... this story basically arose out of my ponderings about the nature of sex and gender, and the associated rights, privileges and obligations.
Essentially, I have asked myself, as a feminist, under what circumstance might I have been happier if I had been born a male. Since I cannot think of any possible way, I decided to explore this issue in its extreme. What if I had lived in the past, when females were subservient, or in one of those societies today where this is still the case? What if the differences between the sexes were so fundamental that a girl living in a sheltered, restricted world like Shari’s (in “The Boudoir”), where everything is determined by the sex one is born into, might actually come to believe that “our sex is the most fundamental element of our being.”?
I hope that makes at least some sense.

Ok I see, that makes sense. Sorry, I shouldn't have assumed you were always speaking through your characters, though that generally is the case in a piece as pointed as this one. But now that you put it that way, that brings up another question. In all of the situations you depicted, the motif of bondage is presented as a physical fact. I mean, Ishara is a slave, thus she is bound. But The Office seems to be kind of an anomaly. Unlike all the other stories which took place in societies and situations where women were actually enslaved and kept in chains... I can't think of any office building that does that. At first I thought it was metaphorical for sexual prejudice, but now I'm not so sure. As you say, these are societies both past and present where women are subservient. I suppose it just makes me scratch my head why one takes place in a Western setting, where Women arguably have made more progress than anywhere else.

I'm sorry if all my questions are getting on your nerves. I haven't had a good conversation about literature in a long time hehe.

Don’t worry, I have no problem answering questions. I will take any chance offered to pontificate on my views and opinions and lifestyle.
Now, you are very perceptive – The Office was indeed meant to be an anomaly. In the apparently never-ending cycle that the heroine (Ishara, Saraya, Ms Sharrett = Sarah, of course) is experiencing, in which the same motif of enslavement and bondage recurs time after time, all of a sudden there is this change of mood and circumstance. It makes her (and the reader?) begin to question exactly what is going on – how immutable is the cycle, how long has it lasted, will it ever end, and how? It’s all to do with the butterfly theme – what is real and what is fantasy? How do the events in the office fit into everything else that is happening, in the Fasthold, in the Boudoir, etc.? Is there a connection or are these just random episodes?
In The Office, the heroine is the owner of the company, and yet she lives in a world where women are routinely bound and gagged, where the right to tie up the boss lady (and do all sorts of other things to her, apparently :o) is written into the contract of employment. It’s a world in which women are both empowered and enslaved.
And yes, there is definitely a metaphor, in fact several. I don’t want to spoil the story by overanalysing, but one of the metaphorical themes is fashion, something very close to my feminist heart. Women’s clothing – is it empowering or objectifying? The other major metaphor is not so much sexual prejudice as sexual dimorphism – women, especially those in positions of influence and authority – must walk in two worlds.
Finally, without giving too much else away, I’ve read some analyses of men’s and women’s sexual fantasies. The consensus seems to be that whereas strong, dominant men tend to have fantasies which affirm their dominance, strong, dominant women tend to have fantasies of submission and, yes, enslavement.
Hopefully that offers some clues about the story without me boring the life out of people.

My apologies for the deletion.
I received a couple of private comments that the story was not appropriate for the TUGs forum and I guess I may have overreacted. I won't restore the story here, but I am publishing it at
http://sarobah-butterfly.blogspot.com/

By the way, if anyone is interested, I am writing a novella called “Queen of Heaven” based on the Bellatrix segment of the Butterfly story.
Be warned, it is going to be very much adults-only.
It’s an expanded version of The Bellatrix, and I think more polished. Some names and details have been changed.
There’s less emphasis on the bondage aspect, which is one reason I’m not posting it here. The other reason is the adults-only content.
