THE LESSON

Ten year old Terry sat on the edge of Doug's bed; his hands tied behind him, and his ankles tied together. Like most of the other kids in the neighborhood, he was wearing the standard "uniform" of early spring - his oldest and most faded out jeans, topped with a light blue sweat shirt.

Across the room on Doug's guest bed, sat Doug, 13, with Terry's best friend, Steve, also 10, both similarly dressed; the differences being that Doug's sweat shirt was yellow, while Steve's was dark blue. "I want you to try and get out." Doug told Terry.

Terry nodded, and began to struggle against the ropes, but it was no use, and after ten minutes or so, the young captive asked to be untied. But Doug held up a hand, indicating "wait," then selected another piece of rope, six to eight feet long, and said "OK, Steve. Hands behind your back!"

Steve gave Doug a puzzled look but silently complied, and Doug bound his hands and feet, then put Steve next to Terry on the bed. "I want you two to get loose, any way you can." he told them.

"Can we get back to back?" asked Terry.

"I said to get loose, any way you can." was Doug's reply.

For several minutes, the two young captives struggled with their ropes, but got nowhere. Then Steve said "Let's get back to back, and see if we can untie each other." Doug, watching closely, put his hand to his mouth to hide a smile.

"Can we do that?" Terry asked Doug.

"I said to get loose, any way you can." Doug replied.

"Wha'cha think?" Terry asked Steve. "Can we do it?"

"Well, he didn’t say we couldn't." Steve answered.

The two of them maneuvered themselves back to back, and soon had each other's knots untied. "Hey, Doug! We're free!" Steve shouted.

"I can see that." Doug laughed. "And you don't have to yell. I have very good ears."

"I guess it was just the excitement of making the escape." Terry added.

"And what have you learned from this little exercise?" Doug asked.

"Not to let you tie me up." Terry replied. "You do too good a job."

"Well, that, but there's something else, and I want you to remember it." Doug told them.

"Yeah? What's that?" Steve asked.

"You remember when I tied Terry, then told him to get loose, but he couldn't?" Doug asked.

"Yeah, so what?" Steve answered.

"Then, I tied you up with him." Doug continued. "And after that, you guys got back to back, and untied each other."

"So?" Terry interrupted.

Think for a moment." Doug said. "Terry, you were given a job to do - to get loose, but you couldn't do it. Then, I gave you some help in the form of Steve, and together, you both got loose. And that carries over into everyday life. There are lots of things that are hard, if not impossible to do all by yourselves. But get a friend to help you, and the problem is often quickly solved when you work at it together."

The boys' faces lit up as if they had suddenly become aware of some great truth. "Yeah, I get it!" said Terry. Thanks, Doug!"

"Yeah, that was cool!" Steve agreed. "Let's do it again, but this time, make it more real."

"How so?" Doug asked.

"Gag us!" Steve answered. "You, yourself, told us that a captive is not really tied up unless he's also gagged!"

"And make it harder. Tie our arms and legs, too!" Terry chimed in.

"If you really want to make it hard, I could hog tie you." Doug laughed, but the two younger boys said that maybe they should practice a few times with hands, feet, arms, and legs, before "graduating" into escaping from hog ties.

"Maybe in a couple of weeks." Steve said.

"Maybe tonight!" Doug countered. "Scott's coming over to spend the night, and we can help you get ready to graduate into boy scouts next month. You guys can bring sleeping bags, and sleep on the camp cots."

"Deal!" both boys shouted in unison, unaware that Doug was already making plans for his guests, all of which involved lots of rope, bandanas, bandages, and neckerchiefs.

Nice short story!

Simple yet to the point.
Everyone speaks in multiple languages...But gag talk is universal and a sock in your mouth is the perfect translator!
