I don't see how you defend a man who stormed a building and took people hostage and threatened to kill them regardless of anything that happened before.

Yes... Among other things he's admitted to. Here's one post in his own words (there are others):

Never mind; the relevent posts got deleted when Cricks got banned.

In case anybody is still curious, and doesn't already know... The guy who invaded the Discovery Channel building and took those hostages was indeed the environmental activist he was speculated to be. However, needless to say, environmental terrorist is a much better description. He wanted Discovery Channel to broadcast (On prime time slots) TV shows that would outline the problem of Human Overpopulation. A few days before the attack he posted his "Manifesto" online, in which he essentially called for the breakdown of Human Civilization. Here are a few of my favorite snippets:

"Focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution. A game show format contest would be in order."

"Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is. That, and all its disgusting religious-cultural roots and greed. Broadcast this message until the pollution in the planet is reversed and the human population goes down! This is your obligation. If you think it isn't, then get hell off the planet! Breathe Oil! It is the moral obligation of everyone living otherwise what good are they??"

"Saving the Planet means saving what's left of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population. That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies!"

"Also, war must be halted. Not because it's morally wrong, but because of the catastrophic environmental damage modern weapons cause to other creatures."

"These are the demands and sayings of Lee. "

You can read the whole thing here: http://www.savetheplanetprotest.com/

While I'm no great friend of Environmental activism, I hope this incident doesn't reflect badly on the environmental movement in general. Cause frankly.... THIS GUY WAS NUTS!
There's a permanent tension in music isn't there? On one hand you have three chords, you know, four four and three chords. Then there's the people like me, who say "Well, why don't we add a fourth chord and put it in five four?" - Bill Bruford

It does unfortunately prove that even a worthy cause like saving the environment can be taken to harmful extremes. Of course, we usually hear more about the harm religious fanatics (of whatever creed, not just Islam) cause - more to their own cause than to anything else. When 'the cause' takes precedence over the lives or even the rights of others, it becomes evil. And in the extremely polarized world we are developing of Liberalism versus conservatism (with no gray areas in between accepted), such tragedies as this are only going to become more and more commonplace.

This guy seems to be the classic case of some one who was a waste of space. He was just some one that got a ideal in his head and twisted it to hate. If he wanted to get his ideals out he went about it all wrong an in the process just made a forgettable stain on the floor of life. Given another week or so and he and what he thought well be forgotten.

Only because other nuts will undoubtedly take his place and get our attenton for awhile instead. This is why these guys are forgetable; there are too many of them. Were they really all that rare, they'd be remembered for many years as an abberation of society; they are forgotten because society itself has become an aberration IMHO.
