Difference Between Football and futbol

Postby Scottstud94 » Tue Dec 01, 2009 8:38 pm

I am tired of seeing something about football on this board, and having people write about the wrong sport.
I would like to suggest: The American Method for use on the board

Football- Used to talk about American Football

Soccer- to describe Association Football or whatever

Ive done sport, and American football is totally different to what other countries play, we dont call it soccer here, we call it football, its a ball, kicked by the foot... football!!! So stop whining when, you say people are getting confused!!! I cant stand American football, yet have watched it before!!!

tbh, its the way its played!! American football... is the equivalent to rugby in the UK!!!

American footballs play with padding... no comment on that!! I could be hated by a lot of American people, if i dare to say why they wear them!!!

UK football... I lovee... Its proper football... good to watch... American football, well I dont know many people who watch it, and I dont personally... its part of the American Culture.. Im not American, Im from the UK, so of course Im going to stand my ground and say that Football, is not soccer in the UK, though many Americans will say that...but American football, is very similar to rugby... which is another sport I cannot stand!

If you ever really watched American football and seen some of the hits you'd understand why they wear pads. We play rugby here too and the hits are nowhere near as vicious. A lot of football players died in the early 1900's when football players didn't wear pads. In fact I went to a game once just 20 years ago when I was much younger where a guy broke his neck and ended up dying from complications from it, and that was with full pads, a helmet, everything.

It's always very easy to tell who actually knows much about American football and who doesn't when the "they wear pads" argument comes out.

I personally think soccer is about the most boring sport humans have invented, except for maybe tennis, but I don't care if other people want to watch it. I tried to watch the World Cup the last time it was played and couldn't make it through 3 minutes of a game. But it doesn't bother me if people watch it. I don't care if people don't like American football either, not everyone here likes it, but I do care that the arguments actually make sense.

Re: Difference Between Football and futbol

Postby Boundgal08 » Wed Dec 02, 2009 1:04 pm

Oh I know why they wear, them don't dare try and tell me I don't know much about American football, and other sports, I do sport as an A level, I have been playing sports for over 10 years now, I have been studying them for over 5 years now!!! I know all the history of all sports around, some sports people may never have heard of!!

I was adding sarcasm to my comment!!! Im allowed to its a free world!!

So American or Non- American... American football, is not for everyone, and to say such things as football here in UK and maybe in other countries, it may be to you, but to us, its football, why is that, American football, is not like our style of football, I must emphasis, that it is very similar to Rugby..

America have there own sports, and we have ours, the idea of American football, came from us English anyway... They got the idea from Rugby, hence why it is similar to Rugby.... It dates back to back in the later 1800's... if you wish to know more, I have bags of knowledge on it!

My point proven... Im not shouting at you, I just really do hate it, when people start to say stuff like this, about different sports and what they are labelled as!!! Its pathetic tbh...

America has there own sports, and other countries have theirs! End of!!! If one person wants to say football, and they are from Britain or somewhere where they are associated with British sports, then thats their choice!
Its all about culture...

Rant over now!!

Hey I like playing football and tennis but can't stand to watch sport. I'm not interested in something I can influence the outcome of maybe. Rugby. Not played for ages and never anygood at it. But watch the next match. There are helmets and body armour out on the field. maybe not so much as american football but it's there.

Well they have pads for a reason..... So they don't get killed. Football is a contact sport, not as much as rugby but close to it. Thank you to those of you who call it Football and Soccer to avoid confusion between everybody. No offense but soccer is about as boring to watch as the grass growing.

Re: Difference Between Football and futbol

Postby Kyle » Wed Dec 02, 2009 10:00 pm

I don't mind it being called gridiron, although I won't be calling it that myself. I personally don't care what people call them, just like I don't care about regional spelling differences or other language differences. We have words in the South they don't even use in other parts of the United States, much less the rest of the world, and I've been online talking to people from those places long enough it doesn't bother me anymore.

I really can't say anything about "American football" because I would say "Australian football" or "Canadian football" for those sports.

But there is a reason football players wear pads, and it isn't because they're weaklings or anything like that.

I didn't think that Michael Jackson thread that went on for a month or longer on the other forum was that important either, but it just would not die for some reason. I consider this one to be more interesting, at least.

I guess my point is these topics aren't really important but we find them interesting so we discuss them.

Re: Difference Between Football and futbol

Postby Boundgal08 » Thu Dec 03, 2009 8:40 am

I have to agree with FF, there is little or no importance here, people have different views, different ways of naming different sports, Americans, and some other countries, call English football, soccer!! Thats there choice, us English call it football, because its just implanted into us, to call it that, for decades now!!

I must say, that to say that there is a difference between soccer and football, there isn't one! American football, is a different style of football, they dont run up and down a pitch kicking a ball, its played with the hands and feet...hence why I said its like rugby!

American's also play soccer, which they call is the equivalent to English football, it could be said it is, and yes it it, but the reason why Americans differentiate between soccer and football, is because there are two kinds in America!

I end my rant here, and tbh, if you want to argue with me, feel free, I will always win, Because I know a lot about American football, and the sporting world over there... Im full of info!

I Think traditionally Rugby Union is smetimes known as Rugby Football and what most people call football is Association football. Rugby league is as far as i know always called Rugby league. So even in UK there is a difference between what different people mean by football and rugby. How you manage to translate this accross the Atlantic and expect to have a single language I don't know. Wait until we get stuck into Porgroamme, colour, socks etc.

I agree with BG and FF. Is it that important?

While we're on the subject, I don't watch "American" football, but from what I've seen I need to ask a question: Why on earth is that game called FOOTball? Basketball -> cuz of the basket. "English" football -> Ball is handled mostly with feet. Apart from kicking for that extra point, where's the foot in "American" football?
And I used quotations to avoid taking sides in an arguement I don't really understand. (or care much about)

Nuclearo I have to agree with you....thats what I have been trying to point out all a long!
Its pretty much to do with culture and what they call "football" over there!
Even though America does have its own form of football, which is called "soccer" hence why people are associating English football, with soccer! Both countries, call different sports, different names, people just grow into habit of calling it that, because its been passed on down through the generations!

American Football, from what I know, is another form of rugby. Its played mainly with hands! Even the ball is shaped like a rugby ball!

But again, I dont really care much! This argument is dead and gone now! People should just accept that different countries, differ on what they name there sports! End of story!

To all who have followed this thread...

we could all keep arguing what football is or rugby is or gridiron is untill the cows come home, what we need is a way to decide it and the USA have been drawn against England in the FOOTBALL World cup.

i propose which ever country wins has braggin rights. If England win we all call 'soccer' football and 'american football' gridion or indeed american football. If USA win 'soccer' is socces and american football just football.

is that good?

Re: Difference Between Football and futbol

The term "football" originally described any game played on foot which involved carrying, throwing, or kicking a ball into or across a goal, not a game where players use their feet to propel the ball forward, as is commonly assumed. In the early days there were only minor differences between all the different games called football. American football was once very similar to rugby, for instance. Football was used by people to describe the most common game in that particular region, and as time went on the games evolved into what we see today. This is why you have American football, along with the very similar Canadian football, Australian football, rugby, soccer, etc. By the way, American football does still involve kicking on a few types of plays.

I cannot for the life of me recall where I saw it, but I did a little bit of basic online research on this once on another site when the Brits on there were jumping all over American football and talking about how bad it is and something I saw hinted that the word "soccer" was actually coined in the UK. I'm not really sure why Americans picked up on it.

As for the World Cup idea, we'll also send our Super Bowl champions over to take on your best American football players and see what happens.

Re: Difference Between Football and futbol

Postby Scottstud94 » Mon Dec 07, 2009 2:48 pm

Haha I agree with Kyle, Americans in general don't care about soccer let alone follow the team through the World Cup. In fact many Americans root against the U.S soccer team because they dislike soccer so much (I know dozens). If thats your idea of fairness Boundgal than we can play some American Football. The U.S won the World Football Championship against Mexico by a score of I believe 79-0.
As for the wording of both sports I believe calling it Football and Soccer easily distinguishes the two. But if you HAVE to call soccer football at least give us some sort of a hint.

Re: Difference Between Football and futbol

Postby Nuclearo » Mon Dec 07, 2009 4:08 pm

Well, taking what Kyle said into account I think neither should be called "football". Basically this whole argument seems to be about the "superiority" of one sport over the other, and neither solution would be good. Now, calling them american and association football seems rather annoying, so here's a thought: we call them soccer and, gridiron was it(?), and call nothing football. This way no one wins and no one has to type annoyingly long names for their fav sports :D If you don't like these names suggest another until we're all in consensus.

And then gag anyone who calls their one football, cuz you know you wanna ;)

I like Nuclearos idea but How's this? Put up a poll... Majority wins?

Re: Difference Between Football and futbol

Postby Boundgal08 » Tue Dec 08, 2009 2:41 am

Ha, Nuclearo very good, I guess! It probs is all about, superiority... but If you want to do a poll go ahead, and see which one wins, but I dont see a point in it really, as there are about what a few hundred members maybe more! There are a billion people in the world, and Americans are going to all say one thing, The British will all say one thing, then other countries will agree either way, due to what they have heard!! Its a circular argument, Unless you have authority to change the name of the sport, a poll is only going to vote the majority of what people will call it.... no point in doing it!

The day I call football (and that is the UK type, the European type, the South American type) 'soccer' is the day my mind has gone and I need to be put in a home.

The way I see it, the American version is like rugby, only for whimps, given the amount of padding needed.
