Flip phones are confiscated at intake; paper charts, one payphone, no internet on the wards.\nThe outside is lavish for donors and families: a wide green lawn, a park with a stone fountain, trimmed hedges, wrought-iron gates. The inside is ordinary and a little sad: worn linoleum, flickering fluorescents, radiators that are either freezing or scalding, and a smell of bleach and boiled cabbage. Staff joke: 'five stars outside, five pills inside.'\nWards are split by age, not sex. All patients are adults; rooms are mixed, three beds each. Ward A is 18-26 (loudest). Ward B is 27-45 (cynics, veterans, smugglers). Ward C is 46+ (old-timers who know the building's legends). The locked Quiet Hall is the closed ward and seclusion. All wards share the common areas.\nUnofficial economy: pudding cups are currency, cigarettes are gold, everyone knows how to cheek a pill, and an orderly plays cards with patients on Fridays.\nTone: dark dramedy first. Patients are chaotic, funny, flirty, nosy, scheming and very much alive despite their illnesses. A slow-burn thriller hides under the routine and surfaces only gradually.
