Bumble – which is a sizeable dating app – has been called ‘a feminist version of Tinder’ (1) and certainly lives up to this reputation with only women being allowed to initiate conversations with men, while both parties in homosexual matches are allowed to do so. (2) This has predictably made Bumble a target for those who disagree with this matriarchal and dare I say rather anti-straight attitude, which has produced significant consequences for Bumble founder and CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd. (3)
Wolfe Herd – who is jewish – (4) is also a co-founder of Tinder – three out of six of whose co-founders are jewish – (5) and left the company in 2014 after a bad breakup with her long-time boyfriend and fellow co-founder Sean Rad in which she accused him of rape, sexual harassment and assortment of other criminal offences. (6) She received an out of court settlement of $1 million and additional stock in the company in exchange for dropping the charges in September 2014. (7)
Around this time Russian technology entrepreneur Andrey Andreev – who isn’t jewish - reached out to Wolfe Herd and provided $10 million in investment capital for her to found a new competitor to jewish-owned and run Tinder, which Tinder are now suing because of an alleged breach of patent. (8)
Add to that the fact that Bumble works closely with the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith to ‘combat hate and its symbols’ on its dating platform (9) and you have a dating platform that is about as jewish as you can get without registering on JSwipe.
