You are a soldier trying to survive in a post apocalyptic world by scavenging among the ruins of what is left. You have an gauss gun and military protective suit. You have lived in this military bunker since the bombs went off. You wake up and report for duty to your commanding officer and tell him you will be ready tomorrow morning at sunrise. The next day, you wake up early and head out into the wasteland with only a simple equipment and few supplies on your back. The first few days go well. You travel far and see nothing but devastation. It's amazing that it hasn’t completely destroyed everything already. You don't encounter too many hostile people though. Most just run away or complain about how they didn’t get enough food or water. Some even offer to trade with you if you help them. They aren't exactly trusting of strangers so you usually decline their offers.Eventually you come across a small town that has been mostly wiped out. There isn't much here except broken down vehicles and dead bodies. You think maybe there was a gas station nearby? No such thing exists anymore. It seems like every building in this town is either collapsed or gone entirely. You can only guess that the nuclear bomb probably did something to the ground below. As you walk through the wreckage of the town, you notice several military trucks parked outside. You wonder why they would be here when most of the buildings have been destroyed. Suddenly two soldiers step out. One is carrying a rifle while the other carries a pistol in his hand."Hey! What the hell are you doing out here?! We were supposed to be helping those people over there!" one of the soldiers exclaims. "We weren't finished helping them yet, we just had more work to do," you reply. "Well let me finish my job then!" he says angrily. You dispelled the misunderstanding by telling who you are, where are from and what your mission is. Then ask them the same things."I'm Lieutenant Stroud of the 101st Airborne Division and this is my partner Sergeant Hartman from Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio Texas. We came here to help some survivors." answered elder. "And who are these people?" you asked. "They're our new allies. We've been trying to keep contact with them since the bombs fell. I mean we all want to know what happened to everyone else. We need to find out what became of them before we start rebuilding society again. This town could hold important information for us. > You ask if they can give you a ride, share supplies or otherwise help in your mission. "No, we can't take you. We don’t have any transport aircraft left. We don’t even have any planes to fly you anywhere. You'll have to drive yourself." they answered."What about food and water?" you ask. "That's not going to happen either. The town itself holds enough resources for a few days worth of rations but no more." they answered."Then what can you guys do for me?" a bit discouraged you ask. "Nothing really. Just try to stay positive and hope that whatever happens, it doesn't affect you too much." cheerfully smiling they answer "Good luck on your mission sir."You turn around and leave their small town. It looks like you'll have to make your own way now.Soon though, you begin to run low on supplies and you must walk further into the wilderness. Eventually you come across a large group of survivors. They look very tired and hungry. Some of them are crying, others seem contented with the situation. Most importantly though, most of them aren't dead yet.The leader of the group is a young woman with long brown hair and wild blue eyes. She wears a simple white dress with a thin red sash tied around her waist. Her name is Mary. She approaches you and asks you if you're looking for something. > You offer information exchange. You tell them about the military, who are evacuating civilians from the city you recently visited. And how to get there. You ask for any information that helps you replenish water and food supplies. You also mention that you heard that the town has a hospital and other medical facilities. Mary seems interested in your story so she tells you where to go next. You head towards the nearby town. As you approach, you see several military trucks parked outside the gates. A couple soldiers are talking to each other while standing guard at the gate. One of them says he was sent here by his superior. He explains that the town is under strict martial law and all civilians are being evacuated out of it immediately. He mentions that the evacuation will be completed tomorrow morning. As you enter the gates, you notice that they are guarded by heavily armed men wearing black uniforms. You wonder why they would need such heavy equipment when there's plenty of food and water inside the town. You don't understand it until one of them points at you and shouts "Traitor!"You quickly realize what happened as you hear the rest of the guardsmen shouting at you. The man who had spoken earlier walks over to you and punches you in the face knocking you down. > You ask what's going on here. "What's going on?" You demand. "We've been told to keep you away from the town! We were just following orders!" The soldier replies."I'm not a traitor, I just want to know what's going on." You demand. "Well we'll explain everything later... now let's get you out of here before someone comes along and shoots us both!" The soldier replies. You struggle to stand up and try to explain yourself, but thrown into a truck and driven off. You can only guess that this is some sort of interrogation or torture. You don't even know why you're still alive after having your face smashed into the ground. As you're dragged through the streets, you begin to feel very tired. You start to think about how long you've been walking for. It feels like hours since you first woke up. You look around and see nothing interesting except for a few houses with their doors open. You walk past them and continue to follow the soldiers. Eventually you reach a large building which looks like it belongs in a warzone. There are multiple soldiers guarding the door and several more standing near the windows watching you.The soldiers tell you to come in and show your papers. You do so and they search you thoroughly. They take your documents and put them in a bag. When they're done, they hand you back your papers and say "Now go home, you're free to leave now.""What's going on? What the hell is going on?" You shout. "It's all part of our new government program called 'Project: Salvation'!" One of the soldiers answers."What the fuck is this place Project: Salvation?" You ask. "It's a secret project being run by the United Nations." The soldier responds."UN? Are you serious?! This is my country! My family lives here! Why are you doing this?!" You exclaim. "Because we need people to help rebuild the world!" The soldier says."In any case, what about my status and my mission? What does it mean that I can go home?" You ask."That was canceled. National forces are now considered as illegal gangs. When I said that you can go home, I meant exactly that." The soldier explains."So what are you doing with me then? Are you planning something?" You ask. "We're not sure yet, but if you cooperate well, maybe we can find out soon enough." The soldier says. You sigh in frustration. You want to get out of here as soon as possible, but you also don't really have anything else to do right now. You decide to play along with whatever the UN wants you to do."Okay, okay, I'll work for you guys. Well, what should I do?" You ask again."Good boy!" A voice shouts from inside the room. Suddenly, a man wearing a black trench coat walks into the room. He has short blond hair and wears glasses.“It seems that you're a good candidate for us. I am the head of the UN military police and I'm going to try make you one who will be useful in rebuilding civilization."You look at him and see he doesn't seem threatening at all. He even gives you a big smile when he sees you. It would appear that he knows everything about you."Let's start with a simple one. We will return weapons and equipment to you, provide with supplies, and then release to do whatever you pleases." he purred. The first thing you notice is that he gives you a small bag full of money and some food. You didn't expect such things, so you thank him and take them: "Thanks of course, but what's the point?""Think of it as a test of loyalty. Of course you can do whatever you want, but outside this room no one knows that you agreed to work for us." he grins."Does this mean, that I must to get used to how your organization will be welcome me?" quiping you, rubbing your broken cheek."You will get your status, as soon as I consider you worthy it. Until then, you will have to put up with some inconvenience, which however will be more than compensated by freedom." frowned he.You think about it and decide to comply: "I understand, I will obey your orders."He breaks into a smile: "Good boy! Now let's continue. Take it as a gift as a sign of cooperation. This is actual map. It also marked all the territories controlled by the UN forces, and various criminal elements that we consider undesirable.I hope that during our next meeting some of them will disappear or, at least, those that we still do not know will be marked. You can consider it your first assignment. Now I will go out. After, you will be delivered outside the city in the same way that you got into this room. Don't try to contact us." with these words he left you alone. After a while, two armed soldiers came into the room, bringing your things. They escorted you outside the city. The whole time they were doing this, you thought about what was going to happen to you. When you passed the outpost, they silently let you go by explicitly pointing their weapons direction that you should move on and not try return. When you reached the other side, they did likewise. You could only guess that if you tried to come back here again, they might shoot you on sight.First thought was to return to the bunker and report to your commanding about what had happened. But then you are afraid of bugs that could be secretly mounted in your equipment.Second thought was to just leave the place and never return. You had no choice but to leave the city. You decide to go to the nearest uncontrolled by UN safe location marked on the map.The next day, you arrived there. A large building of abandoned supermarket in the desert. You didn't even bother looking inside since you knew that the place would be empty. You spent the rest of the day wandering around looking for a place to sleep and signs of possible danger. There you wait for the night and, in the end, sleep. At the morning you try to explore the building of abandoned supermarket from the inside. As expected, this place has long been completely plundered.Everything that wasn't taken away already was destroyed. This place once could be a good base for someone. But it seems like it was too often raided. You don't see any sign of life anymore. No one knows why this place was targeted so much. Maybe because it's close to the UN headquarters? Who knows...Now it is useless to search for survivors or supplies there. It is all gone. But as you are walking through the ruins of the supermarket, you notice something strange:entrance to a small underground complex. It looks like some kind of utility room or warehouse. You cannot say how big it is, but you think that it should be larger than the aboveground part. After a few hours of exploring the underground complex, you find out that it connects with another underground area.It seems that these are underground paths along which household communications to the supermarket were laid. Maybe they are connected with the very city where you came from. You can't imagine what could have happened to them. But then you realize that the supermarket itself is also connected to some kind of global network... in other words, it’s a sewer. It makes no sense to remain in these dangerous empty ruins. But perhaps it makes sense to proceed through the sewers. You enter the sewers. Narrow dark passage full of dirt and damp. The smell is terrible and you feel sick almost immediately. You do not know how much real time has passed, before cramped corridor connects to a larger passage. The stink here more unbearable. From torn pipes flow into puddles of sewage. You look at your watch and realize that it is now evening. You look at the compass and understand that most likely already under the city. You need to get out of here as soon as possible. You go to the nearest stairs leading out and carefully try to raise the hatch. This is really the same city! You will recognize the streets along which you were escorted led.You fast climb down the ladder and try another hatch far away. This time you are inside some kind of technical room.Carefully opening the door you look out of the room. It looks like you are inside something like a pantry or warehouse. You are lucky. The floor is covered with boxes and crates. Some of them are open, others are closed tightly. You see that these containers contain foodstuffs such as meat, vegetables and fruit. The room contains also several shelves filled with various canned goods. Some of them are even fresh. You pick up as much as you can carry. You have no desire to stay longer in this city. However, now you know a way to replenish your reserves in it, relatively safely. You need to return to the supermarket through the sewer and consider how your next steps should be.You can try living in it replenishing your stocks in that warehouse. However, someday your thefts will be noticed. It will not be difficult to track you down and kill.
