At Moderna, our colleagues are committed to making a difference in the world beyond our four walls. Each year we launch our global Volunteer Season, a dedicated time when teams around the world step away from day-to-day work to support the communities where we live and work. Now in its seventh year, Volunteer Season has brought together thousands of colleagues to partner with organizations making an impact across the globe.   A few highlights: ✨ Our Basel colleagues joined Werstätte to help transform rescued food into jams, soups and juices that reduce waste and nourish the community. ✨ Cambridge-based volunteers packed more than 950 STEM kits for Science Club for Girls, supporting programming on space exploration, robotics and engineering. ✨ Colleagues in Canada volunteered at a Toronto subsidized housing complex—cleaning, decorating for the holidays, and sharing in a coffee and cookie social with residents. ✨ In Korea, teams partnered with Make-A-Wish to assemble Wish Bears for children living with cancer and other serious illnesses. ✨ Our Princeton colleagues collected donations for the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen. ✨ In Taiwan, colleagues made more than 150 handmade soaps and delivered them to seniors supported by the Eden Social Welfare Foundation.   We are grateful to every colleague who shared their time, energy and heart. You made a positive impact in the places we call home.

We aspire to be active contributors to the communities where we live and work. Back-to-school season should be about excitement and possibility—not stress over missing supplies. That’s why one of our teams organized a supply drive in partnership with United Way of Tri-County to help students in our local communities start the year confident and prepared. From backpacks to notebooks, crayons to calculators, colleagues came together to provide the essentials kids need to thrive in the classroom.

CMV Awareness Month in June highlights the impact of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV), the most common congenital infection worldwide, affecting 1 in 200 newborns in the US and up to 12 in 200 in developing countries. As part of Moderna’s #StimulatingtheScience initiative, we’re recognizing peer-reviewed studies that are shaping the future of CMV awareness, surveillance and care.   The second article we’re proud to highlight this month is by Dr. Chelsea Lutz, PhD, MPH, CPH, et al., and is titled, “Updated National and State-Specific Prevalence of Congenital Cytomegalovirus Infection, United States, 2018–2022” This study presents the most recent national and state-specific estimates of congenital CMV (cCMV) prevalence in the U.S., adjusted for maternal age and demographic differences across populations. The findings reveal clear health disparities in cCMV burden by race, ethnicity, maternal age and geography—insights that are critical for informing more targeted and equitable public health strategies, screening programs and future vaccine efforts.   We thank the authors for their important contributions to the field that support efforts to reduce the burden of cCMV nationwide. June is CMV Awareness Month—a time dedicated to raising awareness about cytomegalovirus (CMV), the leading infectious cause of birth defects in the United States. As part of this effort, our #StimulatingtheScience initiative recognizes and celebrates important, peer-reviewed research that advances our understanding of CMV and supports efforts to improve prevention, diagnosis and care.   The first study we are recognizing for our initiative is by Dr. Mallory Baker, et al., and is titled, “Timing of Congenital Cytomegalovirus Diagnosis and Missed Opportunities”. This study sheds light on how delayed diagnoses of congenital CMV (cCMV) can result in missed opportunities for early treatment, monitoring and intervention. Nearly half of the infants in the cohort were not diagnosed until after 3 weeks of age, with some diagnoses occurring well after the onset of sensorineural hearing loss. The findings emphasize the importance of early screening strategies—including universal and expanded targeted approaches—to prevent diagnostic delays and improve developmental outcomes.   We thank Dr. Baker and her colleagues for their meaningful contribution to the field and for helping shape the case for improved cCMV detection and care pathways. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S.—but it's also one of the most preventable. Most skin cancers, including melanoma—the deadliest form—are caused by UV exposure from the sun, tanning beds or sunlamps.    This Melanoma and Skin Cancer Awareness Month, here are 3 things to remember to help protect yourself and your loved ones:    ☀️ Know your risk – Anyone can get skin cancer, but certain factors raise the risk.  🧴 Reduce your exposure – Think sunscreen, shade and protective clothing.  🕵️♀️ Monitor your skin – Melanoma is easier to treat the earlier it’s diagnosed.    Prevention is powerful. This summer, protect your skin and share the facts.    Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e5_z7APx

The future of #STEM starts in the classroom. We're proud to support the Massachusetts Science & Engineering Fair and honor educators who go above and beyond to make hands-on #science and discovery possible for students across Massachusetts.

🎉 Celebrating Excellence in Science Education! We are thrilled to announce that Valerie Finnerty of Littleton High School is the recipient of the Educator Excellence Award at the 2025 Massachusetts High School Science & Engineering Fair — generously sponsored by Moderna, a global leader in biotechnology and innovation. After more than two decades leading a thriving middle school science fair program, Valerie brought that same passion to Littleton High School in 2021, determined to build a research program from the ground up. In just four years, she grew the STEM Research Club from one student to 28 students working on 15 projects — a remarkable testament to her dedication, leadership, and belief in the power of student-led discovery. Valerie’s impact extends beyond her classroom. She has helped train fellow educators, served on the Region IV committee, and collaborated with MSEF to improve science fair resources for teachers across the state. 💬 As Valerie puts it: “I always stress that conducting their own research is about the process and what they learn from the experience, rather than about winning a competition. My favorite part of mentoring student research is seeing their excitement and joy when they figure something out.” 👏 A heartfelt thank you to Moderna for sponsoring this award and for your commitment to empowering science educators. Your support allows MSEF to celebrate and uplift more educators like Valerie and expand the reach of independent STEM learning opportunities across Massachusetts. #MassScienceFair #MSEF #Moderna
