Tohsaka looked serious anyway, so this likely isn’t just him coming to spend time with us on a whim. At least he doesn’t seem angry. He’s not exactly one to hold back on being passive aggressive when he’s pissed at you. I’m well aware of what his “you’re in deep shit” smile looks like and that wasn’t what I saw him wearing earlier, so I guess I should be fine. The door to the rooftop, our planned meeting place, opens, and a certain boy with purple, tied up hair makes his way through… empty handed….? “Hey, I thought you were supposed to bring lunch today…?” My question serves as a greeting. We normally like to make our meals together when we can, but Tomoki said that he wanted to surprise me with something today so I decided to head to school early without him. I would have preferred to spend my time with Tomoki instead, though spending my morning with Issei is far from the worst thing in the world. All I really have to deal with there is put up with another one of his tangents about how I really need to stay away from Tohsaka and the ‘homosexuality’ he radiates. Don't ask me why Issei is so dead set on Tohsaka being gay. I have no idea either. “Oh don’t worry Senpai. I’ll bring it out in a second.” Tomoki says with a knowing grin. …? Is he supposed to have it delivered to us or something? I halt my pacing and seat myself next to the fence, Tomoki following in my footsteps and taking a seat at my side. “We’re both waiting for Nii-san, aren’t we?” “Hm? If we’re talking about Tohsaka, yeah. He asked to see you too?” “Yes. I was actually planning on asking him to have lunch with us anyway. I know he usually goes out on Saturdays, so I thought I’d make a bento for him as well.” I’m still confused as to why Tomoki is speaking about the lunch he’s prepared when none of these bento boxes he speaks of are anywhere in sight. Though I guess I won’t pry if he of all people doesn’t seem to be worried about it. Actually, his general confidence in all things seems to be improving a lot lately. If I had more of an ego I’d take credit for his new demeanor, seeing how we’re dating now with little to no issue, but everyone who is now a part of his life has been great for his mental health since the war ended. He’s done a lot for himself and others too. I don’t know where Tohsaka or I especially would be if it wasn’t for his presence in our lives. I absentmindedly look up at today’s clear sky. I want to say that a lot has changed over the past few months. The Grail War was probably the most stressed I’ll ever be. I’ve gained about four more people to occupy my house daily with Tohsaka, Saber, Rider, and Illya. I’ve had to come to terms with a lot about myself, and learned a lot about some others. And well… I have a boyfriend now. But at the same time my day to day life hasn’t changed all that much. Fuji-nee is still Fuji-nee. Issei is still Issei. Mitsuzuri is still Mitsuzuri. Shinji is still Shinji, even if he has been improving. And Tomoki is still Tomoki. You might think that finding out that you’ve fallen for a guy would be a life altering event. That it would permanently change how you interact with the world and how the world interacts with you. But with everything said and done, I’m still the same Shirou Emiya I’ve always been. Maybe it felt different and wrong and embarrassing to dwell on some of those thoughts and admit to them out loud, but other than the new intimacy we share and some of the things we tell each other in private, my relationship with Tomoki isn’t too different than it always has been. Only now, him being the first thing I see in the morning is something I’ll experience until we die. —! My eyes widen a little as Tomoki snuggles into my side, closing his eyelids and resting his head on my shoulder. I’m guessing that he’s decided to get all of the intimacy he wants out now since Tohsaka is bound to arrive any minute now. It makes me somewhat anxious to be doing this at school, but it is only us up here so I won’t complain. I look over at his peaceful expression. I’m sure it took him a lot to build up the confidence to do something like this for the first time in public. I might be a bit flustered, but I’m still proud of him as his boyfriend. I wrap my arm around him, resting my own head against his as a warm smile naturally falls on my lips. I really love him. Being able to hold him like this is something I wouldn’t trade for the world. The door creaks open. Tomoki practically leaps off of me as I rush to sit myself up straight before the visitor notices. “Sorry for taking so long.” Says the resident school idol, making his way to seat himself in front of both of us. “O-Oh, it’s fine Nii-san. We haven’t been waiting long at all…!” “Yeah, d-don’t worry.” Tohsaka lets out a sigh at our sputters. A small grin peeks through his lips as he does so. “You two can continue cuddling if you want to. I’ve been third wheeling you both for long enough, haven’t I?” “W-We’re fine..!!!” Tomoki bursts out as his cheeks burn pink. I try my hardest to ignore the red devil, hoping that my face doesn’t look as colourful as my partner’s. “Alright, suit yourself.” The previously half-hidden grin on Tohsaka’s face shows itself in its entirety. Ugh, now I have to complain at least a little. “Are you going to keep this up forever or is this just until you get a date?” “Why would I stop teasing you? You’re framing this like I’m jealous. You should know that I’m far too busy for that sort of thing.” “For someone far too busy for a partner you spend an awful lot of time at my house.” Tohsaka squints at me, somehow dumbfounded by my retort. “What do you figure I do in my guest room? Haven’t you walked in on me plenty enough to know that I’m not just screwing around? Having you and Tomoki cook for me most days gives me more time to spend on studying and working with my gemstones.” “Isn’t that what having a partner is for?” “Not everyone is like you and Tomoki, Emiya-kun. Most people can’t live with their partner in highschool, doubly so if you’re a magus.” “I guess.” I decide to cut my losses. I’m still annoyed that he feels the need to tease us so often, especially at school, but I can’t think of any good comebacks at the moment and I like to think that I’ve matured enough to know that I’ll just make myself look like an idiot if I try to fight a battle I can’t win against Tohsaka. I can’t say that I’m not a little curious about his type though. I’m getting a bit tired of his constant “Oh, so you really do have a thing for younger siblings, Emiya-kun~?” and learning about what Sigmund Freud’s take on Homurahara’s own school idol would be is the only thing that will make me feel better. Not that I have a thing for younger siblings of course. “Anyway, Tomoki, you said you had lunch for us, right?” Tohsaka asks his brother, seemingly having gotten over his mild annoyance with me in record breaking time. “Yep!” Tomoki immediately regains his composure, seating himself up straight and making room in the middle of the three of us. He exaggerates a cough to empty his throat, making sure to let us know to pay attention to whatever he’s about to do. My endless ocean open to me “Mein endloser Ozean, öffen dich für mich.” His words ring through my ears, and a circle, coloured the deepest black you could imagine, manifests on the floor between us. ‘Disk’ would be an appropriate way to describe what I’m seeing. What Tomoki just created looks completely flat, nearly two dimensional. I couldn’t imagine it having any depth, but something tells me that my deduction is off. Seeing something like this only brings back bad memories. The slight reddening of Tomoki’s eyes isn’t helping matters much either. Though I can’t imagine that Tomoki would be putting himself or anyone at risk for what I presume is lunch. Tohsaka looks stupefied as Tomoki reaches into the void, his forearms disappearing into the black for a moment before he pulls out a stack of three colour coated bento boxes along with a thermos, three small drinking glasses and pairs of chopsticks, before placing them next to the darkness. Close for me ""Für mich schließen."" And the void disappears as if it were never there. “…I’m sorry, I know my German isn’t as good as yours Nii-san.” Tomoki’s confidence breaks slightly with everything said and done. I suppose having to say all that out loud made him feel insecure. Still, butchered German aside, I’m certainly impressed. And judging by Tohsaka’s face, he seems to be just as impressed as me, if not moreso. “That’s not something you need to worry about Tomoki.” Tohsaka responds first, his shock clearly holding back the excitement he feels from entirely showing itself. “How uh…. How long have you been able to do this…?” “I know you told me to work on forming waves of energy, but I thought trying to do this again would be a lot more practical.” Tomoki shyly tugs at his own hair. “You know that what you’re accessing is Imaginary Numbers Space, right?” “Y-Yes…?” Tohsaka chuckles to himself. Tomoki and I look at each other, our perplexed expressions serving as a perfect mirror. I feel like my confusion is a bit different than his though. “What are you two talking about?” I ask. “Something too complicated for you.” Tohsaka responds. “All you need to know is that your boyfriend is a prodigy at a famously complicated form of magecraft.” “I-I wouldn’t say this is too impressive…” Tomoki meekly responds. He’s clearly a bit embarrassed from the flattery coming from his brother, as good as it definitely feels for him. “Jeez, where’d all that confidence from a minute ago leave? I’d be jealous of how fast you’ve managed to make an opening of this size if I wasn’t so impressed.” “Thank you Nii-san…” He says through his blush. “You can thank me by letting me borrow your space sometime. Just make sure not to use it in front of anyone outside of us or the servants.” “I know, don’t worry.” “I don’t mean to rush.” I interrupt. “But shouldn’t we start eating? We only have so much time before the next period.” And as if it never left, Tomoki regains his pride. “Of course! I made a lot, so don’t feel bad about taking leftovers if you like!” He places the green bento in front of me, the red bento next to his brother, and leaves the pink bento next to himself, then repeated for the trio of cups and chopstick pairs he summoned as well. Assuming that I have his go ahead, I flip open the lid to the box presented to me. The waft of the multi-layered meal within immediately hits my nostrils, followed shortly by the unexpected heat coming from its contents. “Saber-san volunteered to be my beta tester, so I’m confident that it will impress you both.” My graduated student puffs out his chest with pride, as Tohsaka and I eye the meal he presented. From my little knowledge of Chinese cuisine, what he served us is chashu pork, stir fried cabbage, fried rice, and— “The shumai is made with shrimp if you’re curious. And the pork was roasted over high temperatures instead of low like how Senpai taught me.” Tohsaka places the dumpling between his chopsticks and brings it to eyelevel to analyze. “I can’t even wrap shumai this well…” he mumbles to himself. “So this is something he learned from you?” I ask. “Learned might be pushing it.” He responds, placing the dumpling into his mouth. His eyes quickly shift from brief amazement to mild despair as he chews its contents. I might as well take a bite too. … Oh this is good. “Well, it looks like I don’t have a niche in Emiya-kun’s house anymore when it comes to cooking.” Tohsaka proclaims his defeat at the hands of his younger brother. “I can’t bring myself to disagree.” I jokingly add. “Sorry Tohsaka, your brother seems to have finally put you in his shadow.” Tomoki attempts to hide the ego boost he just received with the expected humble response of “I’m sure that my magecraft keeping everything warm and fresh gives me a bit of an unfair advantage.” “I don’t think I’ve ever made rice this fluffy either…” Tohsaka says after swallowing another bite. For someone as competitive as him, you’d think he’d look a bit more upset about being usurped as the only chef with knowledge on Chinese food. Though for once, Tohsaka seems to actually be relieved at losing to someone. Maybe Tohsaka isn’t immune to the pride one feels as a master when his student finally surpasses him, maybe even more so as the student in question is his younger brother. It’s a feeling I know all too well having to watch Tomoki’s slow progression from a boy who nearly had a panic attack managing the stove to a master chef of the Emiya household. It’s only a matter of time before he usurps me next and I’m delegated to a sous chef. “I’m happy you both are enjoying yourselves then.” Tomoki proudly smiles at the two of us, leaning forward to pour some of what looks like iced tea into our cups. My eyes wander over to Tomoki’s own meal momentarily, stacked just as high with Chinese cuisine as the bento made for the people he’s serving. I can’t help but smile a little. After years of dealing with Tomoki’s paranoia about gaining weight and the rabbit sized portions he gives himself as a result, it’s nice to see him eating as much as the rest of us. [ stop music ] “Nii-san.” Tomoki, seemingly having received his fill of flattery from the two of us, segues the conversation elsewhere. “You have something you would like to discuss with Senpai and I, right?” “Right.” The elder sibling finishes a sip of his iced tea, a somewhat grim expression taking over his face. “Someone has been scouting the Fuyuki ley lines. I would like you both to help over the coming days to figure out who it is and what they’re up to.” So that’s why he looked so serious this morning. From what I can remember from Tohsaka’s lectures, the ley lines being under threat is a pretty big deal. The Tohsakas having them under their control isn’t just for bragging rights. If the wrong person gains access to even one of those ley lines plenty of Fuyuki’s residents will have their livelihood in the hands of some evildoer and their whims. [ BGM: Midnight Loophole ] “Some mana usage being detected near a ley line usually isn’t something I worry about. There isn’t a point to getting up in arms about some touristing magus stumbling upon one of them. But every ley line was set off. That doesn’t happen unless someone is trying something.” “So what do you need us to do?” I ask. Though, I already have a feeling that I know what he’s going to say. “Well, Emiya-kun, I’d like to have you come with me to check out the ley line in central park tonight. Since the church and Ryuudou Temple will already have people guarding it, if we do that and have Saber and Rider cover the other two ley lines, we’ll have all of them covered at once.” “Will you have to fight the intruder when you find them?” Tohsaka lets out a sigh at his brother’s inquiry. It seems that he’s aware of where this conversation is going to go now that Tomoki has asked this question. “It’s possible. If someone is planning to take over Fuyuki they’ve got to either be extremely dangerous or extremely stupid. Both of which are likely to lead to someone having to teach them a lesson.” “Wouldn’t it be best to leave this to Saber-san or Rider then? I’m sure they’re strong enough to handle anyone who isn’t a servant. You and Senpai shouldn’t risk your lives until we know the enemy isn’t too scary.” Tomoki firmly retorts. As is in character of him, he isn’t ready to risk either of us getting hurt. “That’s why I’m taking Emiya-kun with me. Having someone watch my back is going to make this a lot easier. Besides, we both have combat experience after what we went through in February. If we notice that we’re out of our league we’ll retreat and get help.” “What about Archer? I would’ve expected you to ask him first?” I don’t mean to ask this as an excuse. I’ve already agreed internally that I’m going to help and am not ready to admit that that guy could do a better job than I could. I’m more just curious why he wasn’t Tohsaka’s first option, given that he’s his servant and all. Another sigh from the black haired boy, his expression morphs to one considerably more annoyed than anything. “...Archer and I aren’t exactly on good terms at the moment.” “Hm? What did you do to piss him off?” “What did I do-!? That bastard-... ” Tohsaka’s eyes narrow as if I just insulted his mother, but manages to regain his composure for what I’m hoping is our sake. “Whatever. That isn’t relevant. Just know that I need your help because he’s being a bit of a bitch right now.” “Alright, fair enough.” I try my best to not let the smug satisfaction of being useful where he isn’t show on my face. It’s not surprising to hear that he and Tohsaka got into a heated argument, but hearing that he isn’t available to help with something as important as this is pretty out of character for him though. “Can you promise that you’ll come home as soon as things get too dangerous?” Tomoki’s firm request directs the conversation back to him. “I promise. I’ll have Emiya-kun bring his cell phone with him too in case we need to reach you. The same goes for you too though, I’m hoping that you can watch his home for us while we’re gone. If this is someone who has done their research on who lives in Fuyuki, they’re sure to know about Emiya-kun’s place and it’s possible that something could happen when we’re gone. So if anything happens I want you to call someone.” Tomoki pauses and closes his eyes for a few seconds, likely trying to weigh the risk in his head against the importance of the situation. Truthfully, I’d rather stay at home with Tomoki to make sure he’s safe. Though if what he’s saying is true, Tohsaka is probably far more likely to be in danger than him. He probably would have asked me to stay with Tomoki if he wasn’t. “...Okay.” Tomoki finally comes to an answer. “I’ll ask Rider to help you with this tonight too.” “Thank you. This concerns everyone anyway so I’m happy to have you on board.” “You really should get a cell phone though, Nii-san…” Tohsaka furrows his brow at his brother’s scolding. “Emiya-kun is bringing his. It’s redundant to have two when we only need one to contact you.” “This isn’t just about tonight. It’s important to have some way to contact you when you’re out in today’s age! You’re the administrator of Fuyuki, Nii-san. We should have some way to get a hold of you at all times in case something happens.” “...” “Tohsaka, it would be nice to be able to reach you when you’re out.” The target of Tomoki and I’s glares attempts to look for any sympathy from the two of us, to no avail of course. He crosses his arms in frustration. “...ugh, couldn’t they have made the designs a little more intuitive?” “They’re as intuitive as they can get right now.” I retort. “You’re just being stubborn about taking the time to get used to it.” “Like hell they are! These phone companies somehow expect you to send emails and comb through settings with a number pad. Would it really have killed them to add a few more buttons like a Gameboy or something!?” “Senpai and I can use it just fine, Nii-san. I even taught Rider how to use hers. I’m sure someone as smart as you can figure it out with a little practice.” “...” Tohsaka annoyingly glares back at the two of us for a few seconds longer. Outside of the points we’ve already brought up, I’m sure he’s realized that people finding out that the school idol doesn’t even know how to use a mobile phone is going to give him a reputation hit. “...Fine, whatever. I’ll go phone shopping after we’re done with all of this.” “Thank you.” Having ascertained victory over his stubborn older sibling, Tomoki decides to give Tohsaka a break from scolding and returns to the affectionate voice he usually speaks to his brother in, even if he’s a little exhausted from arguing. [ BGM: Calm Days ] Recalling the meal in front of me, I finally taste another bite of the chashu pork. I feel bad for possibly giving Tomoki the impression that I’m not enjoying what he prepared just for us, it’s just hard to remind yourself to eat when the lunch conversation gets as serious as it was a moment ago. Damn, I think this is better than the pork I make too. The brothers seem to have forgotten about the meal until now too, following in my footsteps and taking their own bites from their bento. “Hey, Tomoki.” Tohsaka, seemingly having gotten over the annoyance of dealing with technology, calls to his brother. “Yes?” “Was what you showed us the biggest entrance you can create as of yet? With your Imaginary Numbers Space that is.” “At the moment, yes. But I’ve been working on making it bigger.” “Alright... What about opening entrances? Does it always have to be near you, or can you make them appear wherever you need them?” “I haven’t tried to open them elsewhere yet. I can try to practice that next time though. Why do you ask?” “Just curious. I’ve yet to meet someone who can access Imaginary Numbers Space as easily as you can. Practically every magus I know would be interested in hearing more if they found out what you can do.” I take some more of the rice served to me, deciding to simply observe the pair of siblings converse for the time being. It’s actually pretty nice to see Tohsaka be the one asking questions for once. Being far and away the most knowledgeable magus we know outside of Caster or Archer makes practically all lectures about the world of magic come from him. It’ll be refreshing when the day comes where Tomoki can be the teacher instead, and Tohsaka showing genuine interest in someone’s skills for once is nice too. I’ll take that over all the annoyed and baffled glares he gave me whenever I would describe my own magecraft to him. “Also, it would be nice if you could figure out a way to get me to England and back with this. Plane tickets are getting way too expensive nowadays.” And of course he went to saving money. Tomoki giggles a bit, likely also finding amusement at how Tohsaka always manages to bring every new discovery back to lessening the strain on his wallet. “I’ll be sure to let you know when I’m capable of that, Nii-san.” “I appreciate it.” Tohsaka is clearly trying his best to ignore how he’s being silently made fun of right now. Feeling like enough time has passed since our break started, I take a glance down at my watch. “We should probably start getting ready for class now.” I announce to the pair of siblings as I close the lunchbox and finish off my glass of the signature beverage of summertime. Tohsaka checks his watch as well. “Good idea. I didn’t realize how fast time was going by.” I turn to the creator of today’s wonderful meal. I couldn’t finish all of it now, but I’ll make sure to finish this off later to make up for it. “Thank you for lunch Tomoki. You did a really good job with all of this.” “Same here. I’m afraid that I don’t have a place in your kitchen anymore.” adds Tohsaka. “It’s no problem! Please feel free to ask for more if you’re ever in the mood.” Tomoki responds with a smile. I’m sure Tohsaka is just as happy to see him like this as I am. “Will do.” I say, bringing myself to my feet along with the black haired boy. Tomoki takes a second longer to return everything back to the pile he brought them out in before preparing himself just as he did earlier. Open “Offen.” Seeing Tomoki summon yet another void to clean up after us, Tohsaka takes this as his sign to leave for class. “I’ll meet you both at Emiya-kun’s after dinner. Be sure to convince Saber and Rider to help out before then.” “Got it.” “Nii-san.” Tomoki calls out to his brother one last time. Tohsaka turns around and stops the door that was about to close behind him. “Yeah?” “Can we try cooking together again soon? Maybe it’s about time I teach you something instead.” I’m sure most people would take that offer as some sort of challenge, like Tomoki is rubbing salt in the recently opened wound. However Tohsaka doesn’t take it that way, a small, warm grin rising to his face as he responds. “Sure, we can do that sometime.” And Tomoki smiles back, watching satisfied as the door finally closes behind the boy we both forever have to deal with the whims of. [ stop music ] Close “Schließen.” I turn back to Tomoki, who has just finished putting our lunches back into his void. It’s kind of strange how natural he looks doing it, it’s almost as if this was something any normal person had access to with how Tomoki is treating it. “You can go on ahead Senpai.” He looks up to me, bringing himself up to my level now that he’s done with his borderline(?) witchcraft. “I’ll see you after the rest of our classes are finished.” “Gotcha.” He’s right. There is no reason for me to dally any longer. But I want to do one small thing before I go. Tomoki’s face brightens pink immediately as I go to wrap my arms around him. “I love you.” I say into his ear what I wish I could say more outside of home. His arms hover next to me for a second, but he quickly settles into my embrace and holds me back a moment later. I know tonight is going to be stressful for all of us, but Tomoki especially is going to have it hard worrying about everyone’s safety again. He’s been through more than enough already. I know that he’ll be able to handle this. I want him to take me being able to say those words at school as my way of letting him know that I’ll be strong for him too. That we’ll get through this together. Tomoki exhales, and I can feel the tension he’s been trying to hide since Tohsaka had brought up the ley lines fade away. “I love you too, Senpai.” I exhale as well in relief. I’m happy I don’t have to worry as much about him anymore, because I have a feeling that tonight is going to be very long. As does everything that the red devil puts us through.
