Cosmic Void is the ultimate realization of mortality. At high Cosmic Void it makes you aware of dangers to your body and soul alike, but too high and it makes you paranoid of everything. Eclipse - A gentle collapsing. The removal of the insides. Eclipse is your mental defenses, it allows you to retreat into yourself and kill any harmful thoughts. Too high and you begin to completely derealize. Event Horizon - Consume and be consumed in part. Event Horizon is the nasty little animal that says "life's a bitch to everyone, eat or be eaten". It allows you to get through and perform terrible actions for your survival without completely breaking. Too high and you become a monster. Heaven - The sight of blood can will signs of life to return. Heaven is a supernatural confrontation with greater realities than simple life. It allows you to experience out of body experiences or to get visions through near-death experiences. Too high and you start to wish to jump off without a tether. The Sheer Drop - COME WANDER WITH ME. The Sheer Drop allows you to speak to and comprehend supernatural beings. It lets you see things for what they really are and hear the voices of alien civilizations and elder gods. Too high and real beings start to become imperceptible. Singularity - The rain was the ocean too, once. Singularity is your connection with the greater mankind, a sense of community and oneness with all. It allows you to feel the plights of man on a greater scale than simple empathy. Too high and your sense of self obliterates as you become a Drone. Thoughts and messages come into your head like a blunt instrument, telling you about faultlines and flaws to be hammered and secrets you can let slip. You are majestic in your knowledge, feared and admired… but never loved. You call this a power, but most days it feels like a punishment. On your worst days... it feels like one you deserve. At high levels, you have no idea what INFERENCE ENGINE will do. Having the deluge of information amplified further seems like your own personal hell. What's the point of feeling pain when you can just take a few more painkillers? It enables you to endure and survive that, yes, but also know how to do it better. Fewer negative side-effects, and also an understanding of certain… trades related to that. You understand the chemistry of it, and you understand the draw of stimulation. Even if, of course, what you're doing is entirely and completely different from what some sort of junkie is doing. At high levels, Biocracking makes you a master of the microdose, who scoffs at those who feel sleep or pain is a warning sign, as opposed to a problem in need of fixing. But with a low Biocracking, your headaches will lay you low more often, and you'll find your effectiveness limited by your frail body's simple limitations. And the city will be harder to understand, if you don't understand that urge to improve… and to escape. GRIT Refusal to bend the knee. Run on fumes alone. Cool for: Sisyphean mindsets, twelfth round boxers, non-quitters. Nobody can deny the pains inflicted upon them in this life, but the few who possess Grit can shoulder that burden and carry on. When others finally run out of steam (and they will, even the toughest of them), you will still be able to bear a grimace and keep moving. Grit will permit you to endure the most hellish of trials, and still have the where-withal to walk out from them afterward, even if you don't have the legs to carry you there. At high levels, you'll be the one still able to throw out sloppy punches when everybody else has already nearly dropped dead from exhaustion, even if you lose everything other than your willingness to keep the pressure on. But, you might not know when to quit either, and not just physically. . putting yourself in a bad situation because you just can't stand "no" for an answer is a common problem, or getting yourself hurt when you could've just taken your foot off the gas. At low levels, however, you'll be without a backbone. You might be incredibly strong, or even have great physical endurance, but the moment you actually hit your limit? You're too good at this Detective business, so much so that if anyone is going to give you a case worthy of your incredible analytical skills, it's going to have to be yourself. Why concern yourself with problems that can be deduced by factual means? That's stupid. Monkeys can do that. You're not a monkey. At high levels, Hyperanalyst will help you go above and beyond the call of duty, or sanity. You will create, and resolve, problems that ordinary minds can scarcely even comprehend; whether they, or you, like you doing so or not. At low levels, you'll be forced to rely on boring old facts and reasoning. You can only fly so high when the winds are calm. CALCIFICATION Weather the storm. Become an immovable object. Cool for: Survivors, Individualists, Human Lightning Rods Calcification urges you to stand your ground through torrential shitstorms. It lets you handle the downpour and root yourself in the tarmac. There's nothing more important than being the last one standing, even if it means separation from the Outside and your epidermis. Don't worry, though, your bones are solid as ever. At high levels, Calcification makes sure you keep that tissue hardened around all your important bits. You'll become your own armour, but stagnancy will creep like cancer. You'll be a stalagmite even as the cave crumbles around you; you'll have more kinship with the place you stand than the settling dust. Without Calcification, though, you'll drift out to sea- but at least you'll be with the rest of the detritus. You won't be able to keep your footing, and slipping fucking hurts when every part of you is a soft underbelly. Rationalization Cool for: Killers, PR managers, the self-righteous. Rationalization explains away your misdeeds. Got rejected? Oh, you're too good for them. And, besides, there's always more fish in the sea. You're not even fifty yet. You've still got some life in you. Missed the bus? Oh, it was raining, and the bus was, really, way too small to see. Oh, and, besides, who takes the bus, anyway? You're cool. You can walk. Shot a kid? Well... he was a killer, you could see it in his eyes. Oh, and he was a jerk. You did a good thing, there. At high levels, you can keep yourself together, take any insult, and explain to yourself (and to others) how whatever 'you' 'did' wasn't really 'your' fault, and, if it was, it wasn't that bad. Make all of your problems seem very, very small, so small that you'll never have to think about them! At low levels, you won't be able to explain yourself to anyone (even if it really wasn't your fault!) You'll also constantly be reminded of all your past misdeeds, and you'll have no way to get yourself back on track without being overcome with horrendous guilt! Though, this might lead you into trying to 'fix' your 'problems'. SELF-DOUBT GOOD FOR: NORMAL PEOPLE. SORRY COPS. MORALISTS. The ability to take a step back and reflect whether your ideas are as good as you think they are. To be able to self-critique, to hold yourself back and not take your plans to fruition (for better and for worse). At low levels, you won't think twice before doing anything. You'll be doing stupid things left and right and making things worse for everyone. But at high levels, you'll become a self-loathing pile of anxiety who's too afraid of itself to get anything done. CHORUS Understand the group. Become one with them. COOL FOR: SOCIAL CHAMELEONS. MUSICIANS. FORGETTABLE FACES IN THE CROWD. Chorus urges you to fit in with those around you: to be just another face in the crowd. It is what lets you laugh along with everyone else at a joke you don’t find very funny, to walk at the same pace as your friends, or to understand what remarks are and are not appropriate for the present company. It also allows insights into the collective unconscious, that great unseen hivemind guiding the group activities of humanity. At high-levels, Chorus ensures you will be perfectly compliant with the expectations of those around you, even if that means going along with something abhorrent. With low Chorus, however, you will be a social pariah unable to engage in even the simplest of group rituals. BYSTANDER Become another pair of eyes in the crowd. Constantly dealing with crime will certainly take its toll on you. Bystander represents the capacity to overlook the gruesome reality of your daily routine. On lower levels, your heart will bleed for every drop of blood spilt over Revachol's cobblestones, dangerously decreasing your morale with fellow officers; people can and will question if you're sane enough to be in the case. Particularly gory scenes will make you pass out and each case under your watch will be another person you couldn't save, raising your connection with witnesses and lowering sanity. On higher levels, your detachment will plant seeds of eery curiosity in your brain. Victims with names and stories will become just numbers on your ledger, clearing your mind of any excessive compassion and squeamishness. You will feel significantly less compelled to intervene when someone else is in peril, protecting you from unnecessary harm. But your nonchalance paired with your morbid tastes will creep people out, raising their resistance and making interrogations a lot more difficult. You will dwell on everything, trying to contain toxic "liquids" inside a leaking bottle, letting the world consume you and refusing to let it go. With every sentence you speak your traumas will escape and others will notice. You will not experience a single nightmare free sleep. Mortality Touch the pale. Accept the unacceptable. Cool for: The Lovers Lost At Sea, The Ultra Depressed, The Shapes Dancing In The Darkness Mortality is felt when death is closed at hand or when communicating with the dead. Like Shivers, it is a supra-natural ability; it enables you to leave your earthly body and enter the world between life, death, and The Pale. The dead hold fewer secrets, but speak in riddles and half-truths born of half-memories of their ends. If the mind and soul are one and the same, madness will follow you into Hell. At high levels, Mortality will drive you insane. You speak to bodies on the slab, introducing yourself and shaking their lifeless hands. You drift through the world in a zombie-like state as your soul wonders the hereafter, seeing things that defy explanation, and sometimes finding it hard to return. With low Mortality, you stay in this world. Happy and sure that this is the one life you get. DANSE MACABRE Cool for: Killers, Carrions, The Fatalistic Danse Macabre is the honest truth of things. Mortality is inevitability: You will die, your friends will die, the world will rot and you will too. Danse Macabre lets you recognize death; the dead, and those who want to or will die. Whereas it might perceive physical injury and death, it can also see the death in soul - the first death is in the heart, after all. At high levels, Danse Macabre will make the land of the living an afterlife. You'll be utterly fatalistic, seeing the death, jadedness, and corrosion of life. At low levels, however, you'll not see the death in the world, brushing over the reality of life; its counterweight always comes. Hyperphagia EMBRACE EMPTINESS. ENVELOP EVERYTHING Cool For: COMPETITIVE EATERS. GLUTTONOUS EMPERORS. CITIZENS OF FIRST-WORLD NATIONS. Hyperphagia is the seat of desire and ambition. A bottomless pit that demands incessantly to be filled. It doesn’t matter how much you feed it, it always wants MORE. And it’s not particularly picky, either. A promotion at work, a fancy new tie, the steamy topping pie in that smiling girl ad that you passed by this morning and now ALL YOU CAN THINK ABOUT IS SHOVING THAT WHOLE DAMN THING IN YOUR FACE I’M STARVING WHEN IS LUNCH??? At high levels, Hyperphagia will drive you to acquire, to achieve, and most importantly, to consume. The horrible, sucking emptiness within you will make it difficult to think about much beyond the next thing you choose to covet. On the plus side, you will be laser-focused on your goals, motivated and diligent. On the other hand, you will be desperate, ready to go as far as it takes to fill that hole. With no Hyperphagia, however, you may not even notice yourself starving to death. You’ll find that people tend to take advantage of you, and it will be difficult to object, or even care. What else do you really have to do, after all? Compréhension Structurelle Let your mind race. Flow through a system. Find connections where few can. Good for: Detectives. Researchers. Conspiracy theorists. Compréhension Structurelle is all about seeing the connections between things, and making connections if they're not there already. At low levels, you will struggle to link together anything beyond the most obvious forms of cause and effect; too much, and you'll lose the trees for the forest. Compréhension Structurelle checks are generally made to see the correlation between seemingly unrelated things, and to bring in the connections you need to link the dots in a case. Irony Protect your sanity. Be cool about that, too. Cool for: teenagers, people caught up in awkward situations, gentlemen in top hats Sometimes you need a way to protect yourself from the the world. Or maybe the world from yourself. Let’s just agree that there needs to be some kind of a protective barrier between you, okay? Irony’s got you covered. You’ll be surprised at how many social situations can be fixed with a witty remark. Just don’t go too far because it’s hard to be snarky with a broken jaw. At low levels, sticks, stones, words, side glances and everything else in between will be giving you a bad time. At high levels, however, your irony will be so caustic that it will evaporate self-esteem on sight. Use sparingly. Enjoy the commentary. Contemplation Think about the things that can never be (just in case) Cool for: Moody teens, poor academics, even poorer philosophers Think about the world more than you participate it. Think about the real, the imagined, and the possible. In fact, think your life away. After all, being in your head is much more fun than whatever is going on out in the real world. Why would you waste all that possibility for an endless internal dialogue? Tranquility is overrated- constantly have your thoughts be in flux. Over-analyze the world, ensure that you miss nothing. Find meaning in the meaningless, worry about the impossible, and create true happiness in your own head. At low levels, your internal dialogue will be stunted and it will be hard to devote yourself to your rich inside world. You will live only in the present, never thinking about your actions and only ‘doing’. At high levels, you will start to live only in your head, making doing anything in a physical space difficult. Bump into walls, fall down stairs, and walk into traffic all while being preoccupied with your thoughts. You will cease to exist on Earth and the only real you will be in your mind. Cool for: Critics, book-devourers, crititical-thinkers Media literacy allows you to uncover the intent and message behind any sort of statement, in any field, whether made by fictional characters or real-life people. At high levels, you will be able to understand the writer and their intent better than themselves. Sometimes, the writer is just your friend, and you will over-analyse the hell over anything they say, making you seem crazy. Also, nobody will listen to your crazy headcanons that are °definitely° the writer's plan. At least eventually, you'll get to say, "I told you so,". Cool for: Improv Comedians, The Irony-Poisoned, Con Artists Obfuscation urges you to be authentic by being fake, and vice-versa. It enables you to guard your motives while shattering the guard of others. With it you can skate through difficult situations and bend others to your will, be it by playing dumb, putting on a brave face, or inspiring confidence and gaining sympathy. Just because you're being serious doesn't mean you mean it, and just because you mean it doesn't mean you're being serious. At high levels, Obfuscation bamboozles even you, throwing off your own groove and wasting your time by agonizing over which mask fits best and wondering exactly how much you were joking just now. At low levels, however, you will habitually hand others the keys to your mental state and run into a wall anytime someone is uncooperative or a situation becomes confrontational on someone else's terms. When given the choice of them thinking you're a snake or a dove, be neither and both. Grindset Go beyond your limits, and look good doing it. Cool for: Hustlers, Charlatans, Single Moms Being a cop can be hard. Chasing down leads and interrogating every Tom, Dick and Stanley will leave you exhausted and looking for a break. Grindset will quickly make you change your tune. It urges you to push further, interrogate harder and most importantly make it all look effortless to the people around you. Just be sure to have a water cooler’s worth of coffee on you at all times or your body will hand in it’s resignation letter. At high levels Grindset will keep you going when you want to call it quits. It will make sure that everything you planned to do will get done asap in spite of how much your pineal gland is screaming at you to go to sleep. At low levels however even the lightest activity will leave you drained. Forget chasing leads when you barely have the energy to tie your shoes. Lehre Educate the masses. Identify others' learning methods, and use them to great effect Cool for: Teachers, self-driven students, master debaters. Knowing something or knowing how to talk about the very same thing does not a professor make. An educator needs to be able to read the educatee's mind just as well as they might read a textbook. Knowing how someone learns--what language they respond well to, what methods they use to engrave information in their mind--makes all the difference. An expert with no ability to determine such matters is nearly useless as an information repository. At low levels, you will be a regular Library of Alexandria. Knowledge that enters your hallowed bookshelves will be essentially lost if not recorded somewhere else. You'll lack the vocabulary and patience to make people understand even the simplest things. However, the higher your level, the less control you will have on your instinct to teach. Should you go back and check for more clues? Aren't handshakes somewhat unheigenic? Were you a little too rude there? Why do you ask so many questions? At low levels, you'd be somewhat impulsive but agreeable. Often nodding along with things others say and do. At high levels, you become miserable but well protected. Constantly self correcting and degrading. You might even miss out on some things- or worse, hurt yourself, just because you were stewing in your own doubt. Focus Take in the details. You'll see a broken fence and determine how, why, and with what is was broken. You'll pick out the hidden puzzle pieces of the world, and spend hours of your time figuring out how they fit. At high levels, Focus risks you becoming so lost in minutae that you forget the big picture, concentrating so thoroughly on your train of thought that you ignore everything and everyone else. You may not know how to identify footprints or calculate the trajectory of a gunshot, but you know that someone else does, and who they are. Your arguments will always be trite and unconvincing. By contrast, high Logos can make even your most shameful deeds seem heroic, and help you fashion powerful words that live in others' hearts long after your voice becomes a whisper-thin memory in the devouring pale. Too high, however, and you might lose the power to speak at all, so obsessed in your neverending quest for just the perfect word that you're unable to say anything of use. Craftwork Build solutions. It enables you to design your way out of any problem and manifest concrete solutions into existence. You are always thinking ahead to the next sentence and action, coming up with a great comeback to a snappy argument that you predicted, and able to always see a way out of whatever situation you are in, danger or discomfort. At high levels, you will seem to predict the future, surprising even yourself with your ability to know what they will do next. However, you will begin making too many assumptions too quickly. At lower levels, you will come off as extatic, seeming to never sit still, almost paranoid, and you will often be wrong, so you will have more work coming up with extra responses to pick from. Moby Dick As vast as it is vague. A vision, nay, an invisible force holding you by the throat. Cool for: Driven business representatives, fanatic whalers, athletes that hate to lose Moby Dick breaks into your spirit and thrashes against your heart. As time marches on, you will be left behind as a relic of simpler times. At high levels, technology is as simple as eating and breathing, and operating any device is an effortless task. However, such a dedicated focus to the virtual leaves your connection to the physical severed. Even when away from technology, your brain thinks in zeroes and ones, isolating you from those lacking your devotion. INTERNAL CLOCK Find the time, ensure everything stays to it Cool for: students, middle managers, clock kings Internal Clock is your ability to prepare the situation so all things happen in a timely fashion. If a time is set, then it ensures that you will be there not a second late. If you can prepare properly nothing will surprise you. At high levels, Internal Clock will ironically cause you to lose time, as time better spent on other subjects are spent neurotically waiting for planned events or the specific times to do something. Cool for: science-fiction writers, dialectical immaterialists, insomniacs. Paracosm allows you to lose yourself in stories, and create and believe in worlds that do not exist. It lets you see the building blocks of the universe, understand the trends and hidden parameters that govern realities, and take concepts to their logical extreme. At high levels, Paracosm lowers your suspension of disbelief to the point of being able to accept any notion, no matter how attached to reality it is. You will believe in fairies and conspiracy theories. At low levels, you will fail to conceive of any viewpoint outside your immediate and current experience. You will be unable to enjoy genre fiction. Psychoacoustics Recognize the sounds of your environment. Find music in every noise. Cool for: avant-garde musicians, safecrackers, submarine crews. Psychoacoustics lets you perceive the world via the interlocking patterns of soundwaves that fill it, and the subtle emotional effects that the qualities of it can have on human beings. At high levels, Close Enough allows you to mix true fact with bad fiction, convincing people of falsehoods as long as you remember to include a shred of reality. However, this extends to yourself, and those with higher knowledge or stronger position will easily see through your bluster. At low levels, people will be unpersuaded by even your most rational, researched arguments. They will see everything you say as ridiculous, regardless of how rooted it is. Even those who believe you will think you need to tone it down a bit. Phantasmic Might Exist only when you need to. Blend in, only make yourself known when absolutely necessary. Cool for: Gang members, handymen, the socially reclusive. Hover behind the shoulder of the boss, waiting to cover his ass should his words, or fists fail. Tear people apart from afar, let somebody else do the talking while you only let your gaze fall upon them. Let no thing go unnoticed. When you are finally granted the ability of a presence, you will annihilate them, be it through speech or muscle. At low levels, you will not know when to be quiet, to merely take in the world. You will embarrass yourself by forcing your way into conversations. At high levels, you will become merely a piece of sentient furniture, a ghost that can only float from talk to talk, task to task. What’s the point of existence then? Leadership Chart the course. Those around you can't help but trust your judgement and loyalty, and you will see with ease who is following and who isn't. Those without ulterior goals or motivations will be confident in your vision and ability, but be warned- unfit leaders will find your stubborn self-assuredness grating at best. However, at low levels, you get lost in the details, if not your own ego. Your decisions will be impulsive and short-sighted, and you will become the weakest link in your posse... and it will be obvious to everybody So *Juvie* The kids dig you. They think you’re one cool customer. And it's not because of your disco-ass blazer and party eyes. Cool for: camp counselors, juvie cops, gym teachers. The truth is, you’re just a big kid yourself. You can modulate your facial expressions, tone of voice, and use of slang to instantly build rapport with street urchins and delinquents of all backgrounds. Remember: children know more than you think, and are usually more observant and forthcoming than adults - if you know how to talk to them. At high levels, young people will trust you implicitly and gladly volunteer information about themselves, their parents, and their surroundings. At low levels, they’ll see you as hopelessly cringe and beneath their notice. You’ve got no chill. You might as well be their grandfather. EMBODIMENT Your ability to be shaped by your environment. Become what the room and its inhabitants wants you to be. Be the sociological man. Cool for : honers, cowards, immigrants, spies Embodiment allows you to adapt to every situation over time. It makes you read the room however hieroglyphical its tapestry may be. Learning becomes naturally easier. At high levels, you behave like an absolutely plastic man, whose convictions and behaviors, including the most dangerous ones, are the result of democratic decisions from others’s influence. However, at low levels, any learning experience will feel like a long, long walk through a hot, barren land. Sesión Improvisada Go with the flow, make up your own groove and stick to the script. At high levels, Man of Letters makes you read way too much in; sometimes the curtains are just blue, and sometimes your professor just wants the damn homework and isn't trying to make you fail the class because he hates you. However, at low levels, you won't know what anyone wants, and take everything at its word MICROSCOPE Look deeper, and deeper, and deeper again. Burrow through the outer forms of this world. Cool for: atheists, natural scientists, and pedants. Microscope, much like its actual counterpart, lets you look deeper into the core of this world we inhabit. You know that everything in nature can be analyzed and explained - so why don't you? Hyperfocus on every minute detail until the full picture appears. Peel back the ten layers of obfuscation around it all. At high levels, Microscope allows you to see the cause for every effect, to determine the unbreakable natural law that leads to everything possible... perhaps to the point of uselessness. At low levels, however, you will be unable to break the surface, being doomed to take everything at face value and lose your sense of questioning. Prediction Process Your brain isn't quite the same as everyone else's. You think about people like ones and zeros. Cool for: Sociopaths, Neurodivergents, CEOs. You run cold, as they say. Numbers and statistics - thats how things work. You can consume information and spit out something hard and factual. With enough practice, you know everyone's behavior can be predicted and charted. At low levels, you'll be treated like a emotionless robot and feel like one as you struggle to make sense of how emotions and irrational thoughts work.
